By the start of the 20th Century, the US Navy recognized the need for small, fast escort ships to accompany the fleet's battleships and cruisers. This resulted in the destroyers, the first of which entered US Navy service in 1901. These vessels were continually developed, with oil replacing coal as the fuel and improved weapons fitted. By 1917, the first of nearly 300 'flush deck' destroyers were launched. They were mass-produced to meet US needs in WWI. The ships of the Sampson, Caldwell, Wickes, and Clemson classes comprised the bulk of the US Navy's ocean-going escorts during the 1920s and 1930s. Some of these ships were scrapped to comply with arms reduction treaties, but others saw active service in various roles during WWII. These roles included destroyer, high-speed mine layer, high-speed mine sweeper, light seaplane tender, and high-speed attack transport. In 1940, the US transferred 50 of these ships to Great Britain, which needed additional escorts to fight German submarin... [Read more]

In the late 1950s a slightly mad kart racer named Frank 'Duff' Livingston had the nerve to enter the quintessential American vehicle-a hot rod-in a sports car race. Hot rods may have been successful in crude American-style drag races, but according to conventional wisdom, they had no place competing on a road course against European sports cars. But Duff and his Eliminator defied that wisdom and beat some of the finest sports cars in the world. The Eliminator soon went into retirement, but many people remembered its achievements. One of these people happened to be Brock Yates, who acquired the Eliminator in the 1990s. Yates campaigned the car in vintage sports car races, and soon the Eliminator was once again beating Ferraris and Porsches on U.S. road courses. The car inspired Yates to build a modern interpretation of the concept, and he took one of the most potent engines available-a Viper V-10-and mounted it in a hot rod chassis with a road-racing-inspired suspension. His goal? To ... [Read more]

American road racing began just after World War II and quickly blossomed into a movement. The Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and the United States Auto Club (USAC), clubs that became fierce rivals in the 1950s and 1960s, were the principal race promoters. Race tracks popped up everywhere, at first on city streets, then at airports and U.S. Air Force bases, and finally at purpose-built circuits like Road America and Laguna Seca.Although most of the cars that competed in American road racing were built in Europe, an underground movement sprang up of 'special builders' who constructed their racers in home garages and small-town machine shops. Some were so homely and slow that only the builders could love them. Others trounced every Ferrari in sight and are now on the wish lists of wealthy collectors the world over.Vintage American Road Racing Cars 1950-1970 is the first book devoted exclusively to American road racing cars of all types and sizes. Pat Ganahl. Von Dutch is one of the most interesting characters in hot rod and popular culture history. Considered the founder of 'modern' pinstriping, he was a prominent character in many of the rodding magazines of the late '50s, and his fame endured long after he apparently tired of it. Besides being a striper, he was a gifted artist, machinist, and gun- and knifesmith. Using stories and quotes culled from interviews, vintage photos, and images of the art and other works he left behind, this book chronicles Kenneth Howard's life from pinstriping beatnik to bus-dwelling hermit. Where it can, this book sets the record straight on Von Dutch the man, but in many cases conflicting stories will serve to illustrate the contrary, colorful, and sometimes difficult nature of Von Dutch the legend. The North American X-15 was the last in a line of manned rocket-powered research airplanes built during the 1950s to explore ever-faster and higher flight regimes. This was an era before computers were commonplace, and the only way to investigate the unknown was to go there. Forward-thinking researchers also decided to design the airplane to fly to the edge of space, long before the manned space program had begun in earnest. An in-depth history of the X-15 program may be found in Hypersonic: The Story of the North American X-15 by Dennis R. Jenkins and Tony R. Landis. This book is a collection of illustrations that were assembled for Hypersonic but would not fit into the finished work. Since many of these are significant and most have never before been published, it was decided to print this scrapbook as a companion volume to Hypersoni... [Read more]
