State Of The States 2010: The Role Of Policy In Clean Energy Market Transformation
State Of The States 2010: The Role Of Policy In Clean Energy Market Transformation
Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 1
Description : .This report builds on the emerging body of literature seeking to identify quantitative connections between clean energy policy and renewable energy. The methods presented test the relationships between a broad set of policies and clean energy resources (energy efficiency- biomass- geothermal- solar- and wind). Energy efficiency findings are an initial foray into this type of analysis and indicate significant connections between reduced energy use and buildings codes- energy efficiency resource standards (in some cases)- and electricity price. Renewable energy findings specify that there is most often a relationship between state policies and solar and wind development- indicating that while policies might apply to a wide variety of renewable resources- further tailoring of policy specifics to resource needs may lead to increased development of a wider variety of renewable energy resources. Further research is needed to refine the connections between clean energy development and policy- especially in the area of the impact of the length of time that a policy has been in place..

Next-generation Biofuels: Near-term Challenges And Implications For Agriculture
Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 1
Description : .This report assesses the short-term outlook for production of next-generation biofuels and the near-term challenges facing the sector. Next-generation U.S. biofuel capacity should reach about 88 million gallons in 2010- thanks in large measure to one plant becoming commercially operational in 2010- using noncellulosic animal fat to produce green diesel. U.S. production capacity for cellulosic biofuels is estimated to be 10 million gallons for 2010- much less than the 100 million gallons originally mandated by the 2007 Energy Independence and Security Act. Near-term sector challenges include reducing high capital and production costs- acquiring financial resources for precommercial development- developing new biomass supply arrangements- many of which will be with U.S. farmers- and overcoming the constraints of ethanol''s current 10-percent blending limit with gasoline..

Southeast Regional Clean Energy Policy Analysis
Southeast Regional Clean Energy Policy Analysis
Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 1
Description : .More than half of the electricity produced in the southeastern states is fuelled by coal. Although the region produces some coal- most of the states depend heavily on coal imports. Many of the region''s aging coal power facilities are planned for retirement within the next 20 years. However- estimates indicate that a 20% increase in capacity is needed over that time to meet the rapidly growing demand. The most common incentives for energy efficiency in the Southeast are loans and rebates; however- total public spending on energy efficiency is limited. The most common state-level policies to support renewable energy development are personal and corporate tax incentives and loans. The region produced 1.8% of the electricity from renewable resources other than conventional hydroelectricity in 2009- half of the national average. There is significant potential for development of a biomass market in the region- as well as use of local wind- solar- methane-to-energy- small hydro- and combined heat and power resources. Options are offered for expanding and strengthening state-level policies such as decoupling- integrated resource planning- building codes- net metering- and interconnection standards to support further clean energy development. Benefits would include energy security- job creation- insurance against price fluctuations- increased value of marginal lands- and local and global environmental paybacks..

Ecosystem Health In Mineralized Terrane-data From Podiform Chromite: Open-file Report 2010-1040
Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 1
Description : .The myriad definitions of soil/ecosystem quality or health are often driven by ecosystem and management concerns- and they typically focus on the ability of the soil to provide functions relating to biological productivity and/or environmental quality. A variety of attempts have been made to create indices that quantify the complexities of soil quality and provide a means of evaluating the impact of various natural and anthropogenic disturbances. Though not without their limitations- indices can improve our understanding of the controls behind ecosystem processes and allow for the distillation of information to help link scientific and management communities. In terrestrial systems- indices were initially developed and modified for agroecosystems; however- the number of studies implementing such indices in nonagricultural systems is growing. Soil quality indices (SQIs) are typically composed of biological (and sometimes physical and chemical) parameters that attempt to reduce the complexity of a system into a metric of a soil''s ability to carry out one or more functions. The indicators utilized in SQIs can be as varied as the studies themselves- reflecting the complexity of the soil and ecosystems in which they function. Regardless- effective soil quality indicators should correlate well with soil or ecosystem processes- integrate those properties and processes- and be relevant to management practices. Commonly applied biological indicators include measures associated with soil microbial activity or function (for example- carbon and nitrogen mineralization- respiration- microbial biomass- enzyme activity. Cost- accessibility- ease of interpretation- and presence of existing data often dictate indicator selection given the number of available measures. We employed a large number of soil biological- chemical- and physical measures- along with measures of vegetation cover- density- and productivity- in order to test the utility and sensitivity of these measures within.

CRS Report for Congress: Fischer-Tropsch Fuels from Coal- Natural Gas- and Biomass: Background and Policy: March 27- 2008 -
Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 1
Description : .As the price of crude oil sets a record high- liquid transportation fuels synthesized from coal- natural gas- and biomass are proposed as one solution to reducing dependency on imported petroleum and strained refinery capacity. The technology to do so developed from processes that directly and indirectly convert coal into liquid fuel. Congress now faces decisions on whether- and to what extent- it should support such a solution. Lacking domestic petroleum resources- but abundant in coal- Germany built synthetic fuel plants during World War II that employed the Bergius coal hydrogenation process (direct liquefaction)- and Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (indirect). The United States attempted to capitalize on the German experience after World War II. Despite considerable investment in synthetic fuel research and development- the United States cut support for commercialization when crude oil prices dropped and supplies stabilized in the mid-1980s. Since then- several synthetic fuels plants have been constructed around the world that convert coal- natural gas- or biomass to liquid fuels using the Fischer-Tropsch process. Several private ventures in the United States are now studying the feasibility of constructing Fischer-Tropsch synthetic fuel plants based on coal- natural gas- and biomass. Proposals to expand the use of coal to synthesize transportation ....

Water Quality of a Drained Wetland- Caledonia Marsh on Upper Klamath Lake- Oregon- After Flooding in 2006: Usgs Scientific Investi
Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 1
Description : .The unexpected inundation of Caledonia Marsh- a previously drained wetland adjacent to Upper Klamath Lake- Oregon- provided an opportunity to observe nutrient release from sediments into the water column of the flooded area and the resulting algal growth. Three sites- with differing proximity to the levee breach that reconnected the area to Upper Klamath Lake- were selected for water sample collection in the marsh. Chlorophyll a concentrations (an indicator of algal biomass) were lowest and dissolved nutrient concentrations were highest at the site farthest from the breach. At the site where chlorophyll a concentrations were lowest- dissolved organic carbon concentrations were highest- and the presence of tannic compounds was indicated by the dark brown color of the water. Both DOC and specific conductance was higher at the site farthest from the breach- which indicated less mixing with Upper Klamath Lake water at that site. Dissolved oxygen concentrations and pH were lowest at the beginning of the sampling period at the site farthest from the levee breach- coincident with the lowest algal growth. Phosphorus concentrations measured in the flooded Caledonia Marsh were greater than median concentrations in Upper Klamath Lake- indicating that phosphorus likely was released from the previously drained wetland soils of the marsh when they were flooded. However- a proportional increase in algal biomass was not measured either in the marsh or in the adjacent bay of the lake. Nitrogen to phosphorus ratios indicated that phosphorus was not limiting to algal growth at the marsh sites- and possibly was not limiting in the adjacent bay either. In terms of nutrient dynamics- wetlands normally function as nutrient sinks. In contrast- the drained wetlands around Upper Klamath Lake cannot be expected to provide that function in the short term after being flooded and may- in fact- be a source of nutrients to the lake instead. The consequences for algal growth in the lake- however- seem to be small..

Renewable Diesel From Algal Lipids: An Integrated Baseline For Cost- Emissions- And Resource Potential From A Harmonized Model
Renewable Diesel From Algal Lipids: An Integrated Baseline For Cost- Emissions- And Resource Potential From A Harmonized Model
Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 1
Description : .The U.S. Department of Energy''s Biomass Program has begun an initiative to obtain consistent quantitative metrics for algal biofuel production to establish an ''integrated baseline'' by harmonizing and combining the Program''s national resource assessment (RA)- techno-economic analysis (TEA)- and life-cycle analysis (LCA) models. The baseline attempts to represent a plausible near-term production scenario with freshwater microalgae growth- extraction of lipids- and conversion via hydroprocessing to produce a renewable diesel (RD) blendstock. Differences in the prior TEA and LCA models were reconciled (harmonized) and the RA model was used to prioritize and select the most favorable consortium of sites that supports production of 5 billion gallons per year of RD. Aligning the TEA and LCA models produced slightly higher costs and emissions compared to the pre-harmonized results. However- after then applying the productivities predicted by the RA model (13 g/m2/d on annual average vs. 25 g/m2/d in the original models)- the integrated baseline resulted in markedly higher costs and emissions. The relationship between performance (cost and emissions) and either productivity or lipid fraction was found to be non-linear- and important implications on the TEA and LCA results were observed after introducing seasonal variability from the RA model. Increasing productivity and lipid fraction alone was insufficient to achieve cost and emission targets; however- combined with lower energy- less expensive alternative technology scenarios- emissions and costs were substantially reduced..

Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 1
Description : .This book provides an overall increase in awareness- understanding and implementation of the recent great advances in the production and application of industrail enzymes on carbohydrate materials. The field of industrial enzyme application has grown tremendously in the last ten years- becauseof the high specificity of enzymes to catalyze industrial processing reactions-the availablity of thousands of enzymes- and -especially- the rapid growth of protein engineerign and genetically modified organismsto dramatically reduce production times and costs for new enzymes. Industrial enzymesalso offer more environmentally friendly and scaleable industrial processes for the conversion of carbohydrate based materials into a diversity of value-added products- inculding the new ''biofuels''. The book focuses on carbohydrate materials as they are renewable- and the most abundant and relatively low cost organic materials in nature such as lignocellulosic waste biomass- especially compared to traditional petroleum and gas feedstocks of ever increasing costs. Multiple industries arepurposely highlighted so that various viewpoints can be exchanged. The chapters are arranged into four particularly fast-growing areas: (1) biofuel and industrial chemicals- (2) food industry- (3) textile industry sector- and (4) basic research to underpin future advances. Accountability Denied: The Global Biofuel Blunder
Accountability Denied: The Global Biofuel Blunder
Books>Social and Cultural Studies>Political Science
Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 1
Description : .THE IDEA that a nation could significantly reduce its reliance on fossil fuels by converting biomass into fuel is an attractive one especially if the use of these biofuels contributes to a reduction in green house gases. With little reflection and even less independent research- politicians in countries around the globe- supported by special interest groups- trumpeted the production and consumption of biofuels and justified the billions spent on subsidies in terms of tackling the problem of climate change. In Accountability Denied: The Global Biofuel Blunder- author Doug Auld methodically examines the case for the production and consumption of major biofuels and concludes that the annual global cost exceeding $40 billion (U.S.) provides very little benefit in terms of energy security or a reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Not all is doom and gloom. Auld''s review of the research on biogas production from manure suggests that there are significant gains in GHG reductions and subsidies in this case are justified. The promise of cellulosic ethanol which can be developed from a wide variety of paper- wood and agriculture waste products warrants public funding to support research and development..

Books>Science and Nature
Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 1
Description : .Plants provide the food- shelter- medicines- and biomass that underlie sustainable life. One of the earliest and often overlooked uses of plants is the production of smoke- dating to the time of early hominid species. Plant-derived smoke has had an enormous socio-economic impact throughouthuman history- being burned for medicinal and recreational purposes- magico-religious ceremonies- pest control- food preservation- and flavoring- perfumes- and incense. This illustrated global compendium documents and describes approximately 2-000 global uses for over 1-400 plant species. The Uses and Abuses of Plant-Derived Smoke is accessibly written and provides a wealth of information on human uses for smoke. Divided into nine main categories of use- thecompendium lists plant-derived smoke''s medicinal- historical- ceremonial- ritual and recreational uses. Plant use in the production of incense and to preserve and flavor foods and beverages is also included. Each entry includes full binomial names and family- an identification of the person whonamed the plant- as well as numerous references to and other scholarly texts. Of particular interest will be plants such as Tobacco (Nicotiana tabaccum)- Boswellia spp (frankincense)- and Datura stramonium (smoked as a treatment for asthma all over the world)- all of which are described in greatdetail..

Deterioration and Protection of Sustainable Biomaterials
Deterioration and Protection of Sustainable Biomaterials
Books>Science and Nature
Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 1
Description : .Wood and other structural lignocellulose biomaterials are renewable resources that provide sustainable products that require considerably less energy to manufacture into useable products than other alternatives produced from nonrenewable resources. However- these materials are readilybiodegradable and as such must be protected if they are to be used in adverse environments. Consequently- their protection through chemical and nonchemical means plays a vital role in the satisfactory utilization of many products. This publication represents the third ACS book by the three co-editors in a series addressing scientific and practical aspects of biodeterioration and protection of lignocellulose materials. The objective of this third book diverges to some extent from the prior texts- in that it provides an overallview of our current understanding of the microbial and thermal degradation of plant biomass along with new developments in the rapidly changing field of wood protection. The latter is particularly important in light of dramatic changes in copper-based wood preservative systems that are usedextensively to treat wood for residential construction- and in the commercial development of lignocellulose modification processes that protect bio-based materials without the addition of biocides. Genetic Improvement Of Bioenergy Crops
Genetic Improvement Of Bioenergy Crops
Books>Science and Nature
Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 1
Description : .Ethanol as an alternative fuel is receiving a lot of attention because it addresses concerns related to dwindling oil supplies- energy independence- and climate change. The majority of the ethanol in the US is produced from corn starch. With the US Department of Energy''s target that 30% of the fuel in the US is produced from renewable resources by 2030- the anticipated demand for corn starch will quickly exceed the current production of corn. This- plus the concern that less grain will become available for food and feed purposes- necessitates the use of other feedstocks for the production of ethanol. For the very same reasons- there is increasing research activity and growing interest in many other biomass crops.Genetic Improvement of Bio-Energy Crops focuses on the production of ethanol from lignocellulosic biomass- which includes corn stover- biomass from dedicated annual and perennial energy crops- and trees as well as a number of important biomass crops. The biomass is typically pretreated through thermochemical processing to make it more amenable to hydrolysis with cellulolytic enzymes. The enzymatic hydrolysis yields monomeric sugars that can be fermented to ethanol by micro-organisms. While much emphasis has been placed on the optimization of thermo-chemical pretreatment processes- production of more efficient hydrolytic enzymes- and the development of robust microbial strains- relatively little effort has been dedicated to the improvement of the biomass itself..

A Biomass Future for the North American Great Plains: Toward Sustainable Land Use and Mitigation of Greenhouse Warming
A Biomass Future for the North American Great Plains: Toward Sustainable Land Use and Mitigation of Greenhouse Warming
Books>Science and Nature
Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 1
Description : .WHY THIS BOOK? This book is an exploration of the possibility that a significant portion of the North American Great Plains (NAGP)- now primarily in rangeland- corn- soybean- and small-grain production- can be converted to the production of biomass-energy crops. Biomass can be used as a substitute for some of the fossil fuels the use of which is now increasing the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide (CO ) 2 and contributing to global warming and climatic change. Such a land use change to biomass could lead not only to a global good but also to specific economic and environmental benefits for the NAGP region. This analysis is prompted by the following facts and trends: The emission of CO from fossil fuel combustion and tropical deforesta- 2 tion and the rising concentrations of other greenhouse gases make global warming a virtual certainty in this century; indeed the evidence is strong that a warming is already discernible. Global warming will lead to climatic change and- while the geographic d- tribution of this change is not yet known- most general circulation models (GCMs) suggest that midcontinental regions in the northern hemisphere (such as the NAGP) are likely to become drier as well as warmer. NAGP- one of the world''s major breadbaskets- is subject to periodic droughts and other climatic stresses that may worsen with global wa- ing..

Plant Respiration: Metabolic Fluxes And Carbon Balance
Books>Science and Nature
Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 1
Description : .There are currently intense efforts devoted to understand plant respiration (from genes toecosystems) and its regulatory mechanisms; this is because respiratory CO2 productionrepresents a substantial carbon loss in crops and in natural ecosystems. Thus- in addition tomanipulating photosynthesis to increase plant biomass production- minimization ofrespiratory loss should be considered in plant science and engineering. However- respiratorymetabolic pathways are at the heart of energy and carbon skeleton production and therefore- itis an essential component of carbon metabolism sustaining key processes such asphotosynthesis. The overall goal of this book is to provide an insight in such interactions aswell as an up-to-date view on respiratory metabolism- taking advantage of recent advancesand concepts- from fluxomics to natural isotopic signal of plant CO2 efflux. It is thus a nonoverlapping-complement to Volume 18 in this series (Plant Respiration From Cell toEcosystem) which mostly deals with mitochondrial electron fluxes and plant-scale respiratorylosses..

Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 1
Description : .The book presents a novel socio-economic approach to analysing the - ergy system and energy consumption in India from a household persp- tive. In doing so- it views households as the ultimate end-consumers and estimates and analyses the direct and indirect energy requirements of household consumption- both at an aggregate national level as well as at a disaggregate household level. In addition- the work incorporates two c- cial aspects often ignored by many energy studies that are characteristic of most developing countries- namely the importance of non-commercial sources of biomass energy in the energy systems of these countries- and the enormous diversity and inequity in the patterns of energy access and use across households with different lifestyles and levels of well being. This work was initiated as part of my Ph.D. thesis at the Centre for - ergy Policy and Economics (CEPE) at the Swiss Federal Institute of Te- nology in Z urich (ETHZ ). Characterizing Mechanisms of Simultaneous Biological Nutrient Removal During Wastewater Treatment
Characterizing Mechanisms of Simultaneous Biological Nutrient Removal During Wastewater Treatment
Books>Science and Nature
Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 1
Description : .Simultaneous biological nutrient removal (SBNR) is the removal of nitrogen and/or phosphorus in excess of that required for biomass synthesis in biological wastewater treatment systems where there are no defined anaerobic and/or anoxic zones. The hypothesis is that one or more of three mechanisms is responsible within individual systems: variations in the bioreactor macroenvironment created by the mixing pattern- gradients within the floc microenvironment- and/or novel microorganism activity. Understanding of the mechanisms of SBNR can be expected to lead to improved efficiency and reliability in its application. Preliminary work documented SBNR in 7 full-scale OrbalTM closed loop bioreactors. A batch assay demonstrated that novel microorganism activity was of little importance in SBNR at the three plants tested. While the floc microenvironment likely plays an important role in nitrogen removal in such plants- it cannot explain phosphorus removal. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was developed to elucidate the role of the bioreactor macroenvironment in SBNR. This is the first reported application of CFD to activated sludge biological wastewater treatment. Although the software and computational requirements limited model complexity- it still simulated the creation of dissolved oxygen gradients within the system- demonstrating that the anaerobic zones required for SBNR could occur..

Bioreduction Of Selenite And Tellurite By Phanerochaete Chrysosporium
Books>Science and Nature
Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 1
Description : .Selenium (Se) and tellurium (Te) are metalloids of commercial interest due to their physicochemical properties. The water soluble oxyanions of these elements (selenite- selenate- tellurite and tellurate) exhibit high toxicities; hence- their release in the environment is of great concern. This study demonstrates the potential use of fungi as Se- and Te-reducing organisms. The response ofPhanerochaete chrysosporiumto the presence of selenite and tellurite was evaluated- as well as its potential application in wastewater treatment and production of nanoparticles. Growth stress and morphological changes were induced inP. chrysosoporiumwhen exposed to selenite and tellurite. Synthesis of Se0and Te0nanoparticles entrapped in the fungal biomass was observed- as well as the formation of unique Se0-Te0nanocomposites when the fungus was cultivated concurrently with Se and Te. The response ofP. chrysosporiumto selenite exposure was investigated in different modes of fungal growth (pellets and biofilm). A bioprocess for selenite removal and Se0nanoparticles recovery using an up-flow fungal pelleted reactor was developed. 70% selenite removal (10 mg Se L-1d-1) was achieved under continuous mode. The use of Se0nanoparticles immobilized inP. chrysosporiumpellets as a new sorbent material for the removal of heavy metals from wastewater was demonstrated..

Growth as a Union of Form and Biochemistry. How the Unity of Geometry and Chemistry Creates Living Worlds Through Fundamental Law
Growth as a Union of Form and Biochemistry. How the Unity of Geometry and Chemistry Creates Living Worlds Through Fundamental Law
Books>Science and Nature
Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 1
Description : .This book presents studies of growth mechanisms. It introduces the general growth law- which is a fundamental law of Nature. As a fundamental law- it acts in entire Universe. It is this law that creates inter-terrestrial life in any part of Universe once appropriate conditions occur. This law universally governs evolutionary development and individual growth and replication of all living organisms- at different scale levels- from cells and cellular components to organs- organisms'' systems and whole organisms. The general growth law is also that previously unknown high level mechanism that secures balanced growth of different organs and systems within the same organism. The study relates and connects numerous aspects of growth and replication- which previously were considered to be unrelated fragments- into a single coherent phenomenon governed by a fundamental law of Nature - the general growth law. It was discovered that the answer to the growth puzzle and life origin in general is in the unity of geometrical and biochemical mechanisms- in which geometry leads the game. This should be expected- since our world is nothing else but space (described by geometry)- which is filled with matter- described by the physical and chemical laws. It turned out that geometrical characteristics of an organism uniquely define the distribution of nutritional resources between maintenance needs and biomass synthesis. In turn- the amount of synthesized biomass defines composition of biochemical reactions. Thus- during growth- combined changes in an organism''s geometry cause changes in distribution of nutrient influx between biomass synthesis and maintenance- which accordingly changes the composition of biochemical reactions in such a way that organisms progress through the whole growth cycle. In addition- the book significantly advances the subject of population growth. The material is well presented. Any person interested in the subject will understand the introduced concepts- which is much facilitated by numerous graphical illustrations and numerical examples..

Biomass Conversion Processes for Energy and Fuels
Biomass Conversion Processes for Energy and Fuels
Books>Science and Nature
Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 1
Description : .Countless pages have been written on alternative energy sources since the fall of 1973 when our dependence on fossil petroleum resources became a grim reality. One such alternative is the use of biomass for producing energy and liquid and gaseous fuels. The term biomass generally refers to renewable organic matter generated by plants through photosynthesis. Thus trees- agri cultural crops- and aquatic plants are prime sources of biomass. Furthermore- as these sources of biomass are harvested and processed into commercial prod ucts- residues and wastes are generated. These- together with municipal solid wastes- not only add to the total organic raw material base that can be utilized for energy purposes but they also need to be removed for environmental reasons. Biomass has been used since antiquity for energy and material needs. In is still one of the most sought-after energy sources in most of the fact- firewood world. Furthermore- wood was still a dominant energy source in the U. S. only a hundred years ago (equal with coal). Currently- biomass contributes about 15 2 quadrillion Btu (l quad = 10 Btu) of energy to our total energy consump tion of about 78 quad. Two quad may not seem large when compared to the contribution made by petroleum (38 quad) or natural gas (20 quad)- but bio mass is nearly comparable to nuclear energy (2. 7 quad)..

Biomass Production by Fast-Growing Trees
Biomass Production by Fast-Growing Trees
Books>Science and Nature
Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 1
Description : .Even though most of the biomass of the planet is in forests- we live in a world where wood as a raw material and its products are increasingly scarce. This is particularly so in important areas such as the European Community- which is far from self-sufficient in terms of wood. In recent years the need to intensify forest production and- in some cases- to uti lize abandoned agricultural land for forestry has focussed world-wide attention on the economic importance of fast-growing tree plantations. These are usually managed as short rotations (growing cycles) of less than 15 years- often for the production of industrial raw materials or biomass for energy. Under the designation of fast-growing tree plantations- or short rotation silviculture- one may find ecosystems managed for different economic objectives- with different intensities of technical intervention and different levels of productivity. They may include any of a wide range of species grown under various environmental conditions. A common factor- however- is the greater possibility that exists- relative to conventional forestry- for manipulation of both the environment and the genetics of the trees..

Natural and Artificial Photosynthesis: Solar Power as an Energy Source
Books>Science and Nature
Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 1
Description : .This technical book explores current and future applications of solar power as an unlimited source of energy that earth receives every day.  Photosynthetic organisms have learned to utilize this abundant source of energy by converting it into high-energy biochemical compounds.  Inspired by the efficient conversion of solar energy into an electron flow- attempts have been made to construct artificial photosynthetic systems capable of establishing a charge separation state for generating electricity or driving chemical reactions.  Another important aspect of photosynthesis is the CO2 fixation and the production of high energy compounds.  Photosynthesis can produce biomass using solar energy while reducing the CO2 level in air.  Biomass can be converted into biofuels such as biodiesel and bioethanol. Under certain conditions- photosynthetic organisms can also produce hydrogen gas which is one of the cleanest sources of energy..

After the Sands: Energy and Ecological Security for Canadians
After the Sands: Energy and Ecological Security for Canadians
Books>Science and Nature
Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 1
Description : .The historic Paris climate talks of 2015 aspired to keep the world under a two degree celsius rise- but failed to set out how to get there. Each country must create its own road map. Canada doesn’t have one. But Gordon Laxer’s After the Sands outlines a vision to transition Canada to a low-carbon society. Ralph Nader hails it as “a myth-destroying blockbuster book.”Despite its oil abundance- Canada is woefully unprepared for the next global oil supply crisis. Canada imports 30 percent of its oil- yet—unlike twenty-seven of the other twenty-nine member countries in the International Energy Agency—has no strategic petroleum reserves to meet temporary shortages. Canadians use much more oil per capita than other sparsely populated- northern countries like Norway and Sweden. After the Sands sets out a bold strategy using deep conservation and a Canada-first perspective. The goal:to ensure that lower-income Canadians get sufficient energy at affordable prices in a carbon-constrained future and prevent the rich from cornering reduced energy supplies.Canada has all the conventional- non-fracked oil and natural gas needed to transition to a low-carbon future. Remarkable hydro-power gives Canadians a large base of renewable energy- which can be expanded with wind- solar- geothermal and biomass. So what’s the problem? Why do we continue to harm the environment? How do we overcome the power of vested interests and untangle the corporate trade agreements that block Canadians from getting secure and fair access to the country’s own energy resources. Can Canada meet international emissions targets if it does not phase out Alberta Sands oil?Impeccably researched- After the Sands is critical reading for anyone concerned about rising sea levels- pipeline and tanker spills- climate change chaos and Canada’s future in a carbon restricted world..

Books>Science and Nature
Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 1
Description : .This book provides relevant findings on nanoparticles'' toxicity- their uptake- translocation and mechanisms of interaction with plants at cellular and sub-cellular level. The small size and large specific surface area of nanoparticles endow them with high chemical reactivity and intrinsic toxicity. Such unique physicochemical properties draw global attention of scientists to study potential risks and adverse effects of nanoparticles in the environment. Their toxicity has pronounced effects and consequences for plants and ultimately the whole ecosystem. Plants growing in nanomaterials-polluted sites may exhibit altered metabolism- growth reduction- and lower biomass production. Nanoparticles can adhere to plant roots and exert physicochemical toxicity and subsequently cell death in plants. On the other hand- plants have developed various defense mechanisms against this induced toxicity. This books discusses recent findings as well as several unresolved issues and challenges regarding the interaction and biological eï¬ects of nanoparticles. Only detailed studies of these processes and mechanisms will allow researchers to understand the complex plant-nanomaterial interactions..

Global Environmental Change and Land Use
Global Environmental Change and Land Use
Books>Science and Nature
Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 1
Description : .The interaction between environmental change and human activities is com plex- requiring the concepts and tools of a number of disciplines for its effective analysis. Land-use and land-cover change has only recently become a topic susceptible to scientific research- as these concepts and tools have been devel oped and made available. Rooted in a broad community concemed with global change- systematic research has begun into land-use systems at different scales and interactions- and their links with global cyc1es of water- nitrogen and carbon are being explored. Partly based on research initiated by the Dutch National Research Programme on Global Air PolIution and Climate Change (NRP)- this book touches upon various land-use and land-cover issues in relation to global environmental change. In addition to the biogeochemical cyc1es- land as a car rier for functions of economic activities- food and fibre production and energy production via biomass are discussed. Crucial in studying land use is human behaviour and man-environment interaction at different scales. Land-use and land-cover change is an important contrlbutor of greenhouse gasses as these activities directly interfere with the carbon- nitrogen and water cyc1es. These cyc1es are connected through numerous feedback loops. The interface of land-use and c1imate is essentially determined by the interaction of man and the environment. Man uses land primarily to produce food; a relatively small area is needed for urban development..

Renewable Energy Optimization Report For Naval Station Newport. A Study Prepared In Partnership With The Environmental Protection
Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 1
Description : .In 2008- the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) launched the RE-Powering America's Land initiative to encourage the development of renewable energy (RE) on potentially contaminated land and mine sites. As part of this effort- EPA is collaborating with the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to evaluate RE options at Naval Station (NAVSTA) Newport in Newport- Rhode Island. NREL's Renewable Energy Optimization (REO) tool was utilized to identify RE technologies that present the best opportunity for life-cycle cost-effective implementation while also serving to reduce energy-related carbon dioxide emissions and increase the percentage of RE used at NAVSTA Newport. The technologies included in REO are daylighting- wind- solar ventilation preheating (SVP)- solar water heating- photovoltaics (PV)- solar thermal (heating and electric)- and biomass (gasification and cogeneration). The optimal mix of RE technologies depends on several factors including RE resources; technology cost and performance; state- utility- and federal incentives; and economic parameters (discount and inflation rates). Each of these factors was considered in this analysis. Technologies not included in REO that were investigated separately per NAVSTA Newport request include biofuels from algae- tidal power- and ground source heat pumps (GSHP)..

The contentious project has aroused intense opposition- pitting local First Nations- a majority of British Columbia''s urban population- and environmental groups across the country against an international consortium led by Enbridge and backed by a federal government determined to make Canada an energy superpower.Arno Kopecky sails into the controversy aboard a forty-one-foot cutter for a closer look at a legendary region with a knife at its throat. Without any prior sailing experience- Kopecky and his sailing companion -- photographer Ilja Herb -- struggle to keep afloat as they make their way through a volatile labyrinth of fjords- inlets- and evergreen islands known as the Great Bear Rainforest. This amphibious ecosystem is among the last great wildernesses on earth- housing a quarter of the world''s temperate rainforest and a thriving ocean environment that together host forty per cent more biomass per hectare than the Amazon. But as Kopecky soon discovers- the politics of Big Oil and First Nations can be every bit as treacherous to navigate as the shifting currents and hidden reefs for which the Northern Gateway tanker route is known. In this rich evocation of ecology- culture- and history- Kopecky meditates on the line between impartial reportage and environmental activism- ultimately arguing that there are some places oil tankers should never go..
