Galileo's Telescope: A European Story (Hardcover)

Galileo's Telescope: A European Story (Hardcover)

$24.15

Between 1608 and 1610 the canopy of the night sky changed forever, ripped open by an object created almost by accident: a cylinder with lenses at both ends. Galileo s Telescope tells the story of how an ingenious optical device evolved from a toy-like curiosity into a precision scientific instrument, all in a few years. In transcending the limits of human vision, the telescope transformed humanity s view of itself and knowledge of the cosmos. Galileo plays a leading but by no means solo part in this riveting tale. He shares the stage with mathematicians, astronomers, and theologians from Paolo Sarpi to Johannes Kepler and Cardinal Bellarmine, sovereigns such as Rudolph II and James I, as well as craftsmen, courtiers, poets, and painters. Starting in the Netherlands, where a spectacle-maker created a spyglass with the modest magnifying power of three, the telescope spread like technological wildfire to Venice, Rome, Prague, Paris, London, and ultimately India and China. Galileo s cel... [Read more]

Expanding Universe: Photographs from the Hubble Space Telescope (Hardcover)

$41.32

Time, space, and a telescope: Hubble s most magnificent images With investigations into everything from black holes to exoplanets, the Hubble Telescope has changed not only the face of astronomy, but also our very sense of being in the universe. On the 25th anniversary of its launch into low-earth orbit, TASCHEN celebrates its most breathtaking deep space images both as scientific feats and as photographic masterpieces. Ultra high-resolution and taken with almost no background light, these pictures have answered some of the most compelling questions of time and space, while also revealing new mysteries, like the strange dark energy that sees the universe expanding at an ever-accelerated rate. In generous square format with several foldouts, the pictures mesmerize in their iridescent colors, intricate textures, and vast, fragile forms. The collection is accompanied by an essay from photography critic Owen Edwards and an interview with Zoltan Levay, who explains how the pictures are c... [Read more]

Development of a Sub-glacial Radio Telescope for the Detection of Gzk Neutrinos (Hardcover)

Development of a Sub-glacial Radio Telescope for the Detection of Gzk Neutrinos (Hardcover)

$127.05

The goal of the project presented in this book is to detect neutrinos created by resonant interactions of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays on the CMB photon field filling the Universe. In this pioneering first analysis, the author puts forward much of the analysis framework, including calibrations of the electronic hardware and antenna geometry, as well as the development of algorithms for event reconstruction and data reduction. While only two of the 37 stations planned for the Askaryan Radio Array were used in this assessment of 10 months of data, the analysis was able to exclude neutrino fluxes above 10 PeV with a limit not far from the best current limit set by the IceCube detector, a result which establishes the radio detection technique as the path forward to achieving the massive volumes needed to detect these ultrahigh energy neutrinos. The Hubble Space Telescope: From Concept to Success (Paperback)

The Hubble Space Telescope: From Concept to Success (Paperback)

$41.09

The highly successful Hubble Space Telescope was meant to change our view and understanding of the universe. Within weeks of its launch in 1990, however, the space community was shocked to find out that the primary mirror of the telescope was flawed. It was only the skills of scientists and engineers on the ground and the daring talents of astronauts sent to service the telescope in December 1993 that saved the mission. For over two decades NASA had developed the capabilities to service a payload in orbit. This involved numerous studies and the creation of a ground-based infrastructure to support the challenging missions. Unique tools and EVA hardware supported the skills developed in crew training that then enabled astronauts to complete a demanding series of spacewalks. Drawing upon first hand interviews with those closely involved in the project over thirty years ago this story explains the development of the servicing mission concept and the hurdles that had to be overcome to no... Exploring the History of New Zealand Astronomy: Trials, Tribulations, Telescopes and Transits (Hardcover)

Exploring the History of New Zealand Astronomy: Trials, Tribulations, Telescopes and Transits (Hardcover)

$175.15

Dr. Orchiston is a foremost authority on the subject of New Zealand astronomy, and here are the collected papers of his fruitful studies in this area, including both those published many years ago and new material. The papers herein review traditional Maori astronomy, examine the appearance of nautical astronomy practiced by Cook and his astronomers on their various stopovers in New Zealand during their three voyagers to the South Seas, and also explore notable nineteenth century New Zealand observatories historically, from significant telescopes now located in New Zealand to local and international observations made during the 1874 and 1882 transits of Venus and the nineteenth and twentieth century preoccupation of New Zealand amateur astronomers with comets and meteors. New Zealand astronomy has a truly rich history, extending from the Maori civilization in pre-European times through to the years when explorers and navigators discovered the region, up to pioneering research on the... The Life Story of an Infrared Telescope (Hardcover)

The Life Story of an Infrared Telescope (Hardcover)

$70.51

This book is written like a restrospectively expanded diary featuring milestones and anecdotes in the "life" of a telescope. Based on input received from people involved in its planning, building, operation, and many scientists who observed with it, the author tells this success story of The United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT). Conceived in the mid 1970's as a cheap and cheerful light-bucket for the newly emerging field of infrared astronomy it has re-invented itself once a decade to remain at the forefront of infrared astronomy for more than 30 years. Even in 2012 / 2013, when ironically it faced almost certain closure, it remained one of the most scientifically productive telescopes in the world. Everybody interested in real astronomy projects including amateur and professional astronomers will enjoy reading that story and meet (again) the persons who lived it. [Read more]

Telescopes - Hidden Fields

$16.00

Personnel: Stephen Lawrie (guitar, synthesizer, percussion); Jamie Cameron (guitar); Brian McEwan (bass guitar); Ross Cameron (drums).Audio Mixer: Ross Cameron. Recording information: Riverside Music Complex, Busby, Glasgow. Unlike their shoegaze counterparts, who faded away long ago but are now coming out of the woodwork to re-form, the Telescopes never really went away. They kept plugging along in different incarnations with interesting detours into trip-hop, avant-garde electronics, and full-on noise experiments. Hidden Fields, their first record with Tapete, a label mostly known for collecting singer/songwriters of a certain age, finds them reaching back to their early days as a band. Their sound retains all the grinding noise and hypnotic glide of recent records, only this time out they attach both to some menacing songs that could have come from their records on What Goes On or Cheree back in the late '80s. Stephen Lawrie's voice is low in the mix, growling and muttering almos... [Read more]

New Cosmic Horizons tells the extraordinary story of space-based astronomy since the Second World War. Starting with the launch of the V2 rocket in 1946, this book explores the triumphs of space experiments and spacecraft designs and the amazing astronomical results that they have produced. David Leverington examines the fascinating way in which the changing political imperatives of the United States, USSR/Russia and Western Europe have modified their space astronomy programs. He covers all major astronomy missions of the first fifty years of space research: the Soviet Sputnik and American Explorer projects, the subsequent race to the moon, solar and planetary missions, and the wonders of modern astrophysics culminating in the exciting results of the Hubble Space Telescope. Extensively illustrated, New Cosmic Horizons offers amateur and professional astronomers an unusual perspective on the history of astronomy in our time.
