The Scotch-Irish: From the North of Ireland to the Making of America

Product : The Scotch-Irish: From the North of Ireland to the Making of America
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : The Scotch-Irish began emigrating to Northern Ireland from Scotland in the seventeenth century to form the Ulster Plantation. In the next century these Scottish Presbyterians migrated to the Western Hemisphere in search of a better life. Except for the English, the Scotch-Irish were the largest ethnic group to come to the New World during the eighteenth century. By the time of the American Revolution there were an estimated 250,000 Scotch-Irish in the colonies, about a tenth of the population. Twelve U.S. presidents can trace their lineage to the Scotch-Irish. This work discusses the life of the Scotch-Irish in Ireland, their treatment by their English overlords, the reasons for emigration to America, the settlement patterns in the New World, the movement westward across America, life on the colonial frontier, Scotch-Irish contributions to America's development, and sites of Scotch-Irish interest in the north of Ireland.

Presidential Saber Rattling: Causes and Consequences

Product : Presidential Saber Rattling: Causes and Consequences
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : The founders of the American republic believed presidents should be wise and virtuous statesmen consistently advocating community interests when conducting American foreign policy. Yet the most common theoretical model used today for explaining the behavior of politicians is grounded in self-interest, rather than community interest. This book investigates whether past presidents acted as noble statesmen or were driven by such self-interested motivations as reelection, passion, partisanship, media frenzy, and increasing domestic support. The book also examines the consequences for the nation of presidential behavior driven by self-interest. Between 1945 and 2008, presidents issued 4,269 threats to 19 different countries. Professor B. Dan Wood evaluates the causes and consequences of these threats, revealing the nature of presidential foreign policy representation and its consistency with the founding fathers' intentions.

The War in the Air

Product : The War in the Air
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : At the beginning of the twentieth century the invention of the airplane revolutionizes warfare and precipitates a devastating world war. Nations race to build armadas of airships; cities across the globe are bombed; flying navies clash above the Alps and India. The United States is invaded from the east and the west. German and American airships duel over the Atlantic, and New York is bombarded by German flying machines. Confederation of Eastern Asia airships soar above the Rockies, soon engaging in deadly dogfights with the German air fleet above Niagara Falls. In "The War in the Air," the astonishingly prophetic vision of H. G. Wells reveals how one invention can change the world. Before the World Wars, Wells predicted that airplanes would be used for bombing, that urban areas would become especially vulnerable to aerial attacks, that dogfights and stealth attacks by air fleets would become a normal part of warfare, and that distance and the expanse of oceans no longer would be guarantors of safety for America or other countries. Visionary in its time and chillingly relevant a century later, The War in the Air continues to remind us that humankind's greatest evil lies in devices of its own making.

The War on Hospital Ships 1914-1918

Product : The War on Hospital Ships 1914-1918
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : It is often said "The first casualty of war is the truth" and there is no better example of this than the furore caused by the claims and counterclaims of the British and German Governments at the height of the First World War. Wounded allied personnel were invariably repatriated by hospital ships, which ran the gauntlet of mined waters and gambled on the humanity of the U- Boat commanders. For, contrary to the terms of the Geneva Convention, on occasions Germany had sunk the unarmed hospital ships under the pretense they carried reinforcement troops and ammunition. The press seized on these examples of 'Hun Barbarity', especially the drowning of noncombatant female nurses. The crisis heightened following the German Government's 1 February 1917 introduction of unrestricted naval warfare. The white painted allied hospital ships emblazoned with huge red crosses now became in German eyes legitimate targets for the U-Boats. As the war on the almost 100 strong fleet of hospital ships intensified the British threatened reprisals against Germany, in particular an Anglo-French bombing raid upon a German town. Undeterred the Germans stepped up their campaign sinking two hospital ships in swift succession. Seven hospital ships struck mines and a further eight were torpedoed. Faced with such a massacre of the innocents Britain decided her hospital ships, painted and brightly lit in accordance with the Geneva Convention, could no longer rely on this immunity. The vessels were repainted in drab colors, defensively armed and sailed as ambulance transports among protected convoys. Germany had successfully banished hospital ships from the high seas.

African American Women and Christian Activism: New York's Black YWCA, 1905-1945

Product : African American Women and Christian Activism: New York's Black YWCA, 1905-1945
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : The middle class black women who people Judith Weisenfeld's history were committed both to social action and to institutional expression of their religious convictions. Their story provides an illuminating perspective on the varied forces working to improve quality of life for African Americans in crucial times. When undertaking to help young women migrating to and living alone in New York, Weisenfeld's protagonists chose to work within a national evangelical institution. Their organization of a black chapter of the Young Women's Christian Association in 1905 was a clear step toward establishing a suitable environment for young working women; it was also an expression of their philosophy of social uplift. And predictably it was the beginning of an equal rights struggle--to work as equals with white women activists. Growing and adapting as New York's black community evolved over the decades, the black YWCA assumed a central role both in the community's religious life and as a training ground for social action. Weisenfeld's analysis of the setbacks and successes closes with the National YWCA's vote in 1946 to adopt an interracial charter and move toward integration of local chapters, thus opening the door to a different set of challenges for a new generation of black activists. Weisenfeld's account gives a vibrant picture of African American women as significant actors in the life of the city. And it bears telling witness to the religious, class, gender, and racial negotiations so often involved in American social reform movements.

The New Red Negro: The Literary Left and African American Poetry, 1930-1946

Product : The New Red Negro: The Literary Left and African American Poetry, 1930-1946
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : The New Red Negro surveys African-American poetry from the onset of the Depression to the early days of the Cold War. It considers the relationship between the thematic and formal choices of African-American poets and organized ideology from the proletarian early 1930s to the neo-modernist late 1940s. This study examines poetry by writers across the spectrum: canonical, less well-known, and virtually unknown. The ideology of the Communist Left as particularly expressed through cultural institutions of the literary Left significantly influenced the shape of African-American poetry in the 1930s and 40s, as well as the content. One result of this engagement of African-American writers with the organized Left was a pronounced tendency to regard the re-created folk or street voice as the authentic voice--and subject--of African-American poetry. Furthermore, a masculinist rhetoric was crucial to the re-creation of this folk voice. This unstable yoking of cultural nationalism, integrationism, and internationalism within a construct of class struggle helped to shape a new relationship of African-American poetry to vernacular African-American culture. This relationship included the representation of African-American working class and rural folk life and its cultural products ostensibly from the mass perspective. It also included the dissemination of urban forms of African-American popular culture, often resulting in mixed media high- low hybrids.

Product : Sasanian Jewry and Its Culture: A Lexicon of Jewish and Related Seals
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : From 226 C.E. to 640 C.E., the Sasanian Empire occupied the territories now divided between Iran and Iraq and for brief periods between Syria and Armenia. One of the most significant material remnants of the large communities of Jews living within the empire are seals, almost all of which are signets whose styles, inscriptions, and sites of discovery provide important clues about the size and status of Jewish populations throughout the empire. Seals show how Jews within the empire adopted or resisted certain Sasanian symbols and sustained traditional Jewish references such as the lulab and etrog. This volume presents fifty-seven Jewish seals from the Sasanian Empire, as well as comparative Zoroastrian and Christian seals. The text identifies their provenance (if known), translates their inscriptions, and organizes them by their depiction or reference.

Description : A Sense of Wonder explores sub-Saharan African and Ethiopian art though stunning works dating from the 15th to the early 20th century. Drawing on African concepts, the inward-looking, contemplative quality of the sublime is shown through exquisitely refined emblems of leadership, divination materials, and masterworks of devotional worship made from wood, ivory, parchment, and bronze. In contrast, the externally-directed aesthetic of the fantastic is evoked through polychrome spirit masks and altars constructed from daring, unexpected juxtapositions of animal and human forms.

Sticks and Stones: The Troublesome Success of Children's Literature from Slovenly Peter to Harry Potter

Product : Sticks and Stones: The Troublesome Success of Children's Literature from Slovenly Peter to Harry Potter
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : "Children's" literature? Have children really ever had a literature of their own? Jack Zipes - translator of the Grimm tales, teacher, storyteller, and scholar - has never flinched from the hard questions about kids and books. In "Sticks and Stones" he raises the stakes for everyone who cares about children's literature and culture. From the grisly nineteenth century moralism of Slovenly Peter (whose fingers get cut off) to the wildly successful Harry Potter books, children's literature is in many ways the grown ups' version - a story about childhood that adults tell to kids. And that, argues Jack Zipes, can be a problem: even the experts don't really know what children make of what we give them. "Sticks and Stones" argues that despite common American assumptions about children's books, our investment in children is paradoxically curtailing their freedom and creativity. With refreshing independence, Jack Zipes contends that children are best served neither by the current polemics of the religious right or the radical left.

In Quest of the Sacred Baboon: A Scientist's Journey

Product : In Quest of the Sacred Baboon: A Scientist's Journey
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In a tale that begins at a zoo in Zurich and takes us across the deserts of Ethiopia to the Asir Mountains in Saudi Arabia, Hans Kummer recreates the adventure and intellectual thrill of the early days of field research on primates. Just as Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey introduced readers to the fascinating lives of chimpanzees and gorillas, Kummer brings us face to face with the Hamadryas baboon. With their furry white mantles and gleaming red hindquarters, the Hamadryas appear frequently in the art of the ancient Egyptians--who may have interpreted the baboons' early morning grooming rituals as sun-worshiping rites. Back then, Hamadryas were thought to be incarnates of Thoth, the god of wisdom; today they are considered to have one of the most highly structured social systems among primates, very close, in some respects, to that of humans. In the 1960s, Kummer, after conflicts with nomadic warriors, managed to track down these elusive baboons near the Danakil Desert, and then followed them from dawn to dusk on their treks from one feeding place to another. His scientific account of this period reads like a travel memoir as he describes his encounters with the Hamadryas and the people with whom they share the desert. Winding his way through cliffs and stubble, Kummer records the baboons' social life, from the development of pair relationships to the way an entire group decides where to march each day. Much like the human nomads who cope with the harsh demands of the desert environment, the Hamadryas maintain a society that is strict and patriarchal in its details but multilayered and flexible in its largest units. We learn, for example, of the Hamadryas' respect for possessionthat protects family structure and of the cohesion among family leaders that lessens the threat of battle. At the same time, clear-cut personalities emerge from Kummer's account, drawing us into the life stories and power struggles of individual baboons. Whereas this rich detail holds many implications for natural scientists, the colorful way it comes to life makes for a compelling book bound to entertain and educate all readers.

Travels with Rima: A Memoir

Product : Travels with Rima: A Memoir
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : This elegy celebrates the last years of a happy marriage filled with travel, art, food, and ultimately illness and death. It is at once a travelogue, a record of the finest meals and museums Europe has to offer, a chronicle of family relationships during medical crises, and the story of how, after his wife's death in 1998, the author emerged from grief to enjoy life and travel once again. Richard Collin and Rima Reck -- self-described "oddball academics" -- shared a rich life. Books, ideas, gastronomy, and trips to the great European and American cultural centers suffused their twenty-eight-year marriage. But the last six years were also marked by the overlapping illnesses of the author's parents and the uneven but eventually fatal decline of his wife's health. Collin records with wit and sympathy how he navigated medical bureaucracy and emotional calamity -- and how the pleasures of travel provided some relief from grim hospital days. The author and his wife had four trips planned at the time of her death. Against well-intended advice, Collin made the trips alone. In the process, he was able to grieve for Rima -- both for the brilliant, beautiful woman she was through most of their marriage and for the series of gradually deteriorating versions of the original. He learned how to lead a new life as a man capable of enjoying things his wife loved (art and good food) while rediscovering passions for things she did not (opera and long walks). This is a book about the pain of illness and death, but it is also about the joy of remembering those we have loved -- and our surprising capacity to thrive after intense loss.

Description : "With keen insight, Chappell argues that not only were white southerners far from solid in their commitment to segregation during the civil rights era, but that the movement actively exploited and widened their divisions to achieve both local victories and federal intervention."--Mark Newman, Journal of American Studies "One of the many virtues of David Chappell's fascinating study is that he does not romanticize white southerners who were sympathetic toward the civil rights movement. Rather than depicting them simply as courageous dissenters, he shows that their motives for supporting civil rights reform were varied and complex -- a mixture of altruism, pragmatism, paternalism, guilt, and numerous other idiosyncratic sentiments." -- Clayborne Carson, Editor of the Papers of Martin Luther King Jr. "Chappell is to be commended for struggling with hard questions about historical causation."--Robert J. Description : The Child in Islam offers a rare and rich panoramic guide to rearing a happy family in harmony and in wisdom-and above all, Islamically. Is there a difference between Muslim and non-Muslim child rearing? Indeed there is, and beyond the physical delineations of a Muslim's practice, it is the difference between groping one's way with a sputtering candle and walking confidently ahead on a brightly lit day along a well-marked path. This is what Norma Tarazi illustrates in her lively and sober discussion infused by the twin principles of kindness and common sense. Here is no abstract discussion; the author's clear and straightforward voice examines the full spectrum of child rearing with always-practical advice and real-life, concrete approaches and techniques for problem solving. The answers and the solutions are Islamic, that is, completely natural and productive.

Scenarios in Public Policy

Product : Scenarios in Public Policy
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : The history of scenario planning is rich and varied. Throughout the ages people have tried to make decisions today by studying the possibilities of tomorrow. When that tomorrow was more predictable and less fraught with uncertainty, those possibilities had a good chance of being the right ones. Now, however, the only given constant in a world of complexity is change itself. In an environment where information technology is driving an information revolution, and where the rules can be rewritten with breathtaking speed, planning can seem more based on luck than foresight. There are methods for coping with unpredictability. The Scenario planning techniques described in this book will help to think about uncertainty in a structured way. Based on Gill Ringland's previous book Scenario Planning: Managing for the Future, this updated and expanded version focuses specifically on scenarios in public policy. The use of scenarios to create a framework for a shared vision of the future, by promoting discussion and building consensus outside a business environment, is examined. Ringland also looks at the similarities between organizations which have used scenarios successfully - such as the importance of communication via storyline and image. Scenarios in Public Policy and its companion, Scenario Planning in Business are both practical paperback books that each expand on specific areas of Scenario Planning. They will appeal to managers looking to learn about and apply a particular aspect of scenario planning. Reviews of Gill Ringland's prevoius work: "Nobody can ignore the future. This book is a must-read for any manager aspiring to put scenarios into practice." Arie de Geus, Former Director of Shell International Petroleum and author of 'The Living Company' "(Gill Ringland) offers us a mechanism by which to bring structure to information technology and other forms of complexity, offering us the vital ability to understand the dynamics of change." How to Thrive in Perilous Times: Living Beyond the World System

Product : How to Thrive in Perilous Times: Living Beyond the World System
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : The Scripture says perilous times will come, but believers are not to be troubled by them. Author and pastor Happy Caldwell reveals how to live in victory regardless of circumstances - by knowing God's promises of provision and protection and releasing your faith to receive. Jesus says in Matthew 24 that when troubling times come, you are to be wary of religious deception and to keep your heart from worry. Instead, stay close to God through prayer, fellowship, and the Word - trust Him to take care of you. In the book of Timothy, the Apostle Paul counsels believers to continue in the things they have learned and to know what the Word of God promises them. By strengthening themselves in these four areas believers can prosper even when trouble is all around them: Believers who know their Lord and learn to follow after the peace in their heart can avoid trouble. By faith, they can rise above the faulty world system of health, finances, and success, and prosper with the favor of God

From Newton's Sleep

Product : From Newton's Sleep
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : What does the presence of law say of the beliefs of individuals in a society--their actual beliefs--about language, themselves, the world around them? In a strikingly original work intended not only for practicing lawyers but for anyone interested in the modern dilemma of the loss of meaning, Joseph Vining invites us to reconsider law as a unique form of thought, inseparably connected to everything in the world that makes up human identity. Oliver Wendell Holmes asserted at the end of the nineteenth century that human law is ultimately a phenomenon in quantitative relations to its causes and effects, and many have been left with an impression of law as a set of processes and rules. Vining takes issue with this and with various reductionist attempts in scientific thought today to express the universe in a single mathematical description of forces, as well as with post-structuralist speculation that there are no valid truth claims, and that human inter-action can be reduced to analysis of power relationships. Law, he argues, is an independent discourse, not reducible to any other, that exists only in human interaction and reflects continuing human worth. Vining's search to reinstate the spiritual dimension in public discourse brings him head-on with a wide array of powerful academic forces: linguistics theory, political science, the new historicism, and the traditional teaching of law. This book consists of a collection of what Vining calls "amplifications" of the implied text of the law--impressions, commentaries, vignettes, poems, and dialogues--which illustrate aspects of conventional legal language and logic, and the subjects legal practice regularly deals with, such as promises, death, and crime. Throughout we see that law reaches deeply into the way we know ourselves and other persons, all of whom speak through law as law connects language to person and person to action. The texts generated by legal method constitute the living record of social acquaintance and contest, speaking across cultures and across centuries. It is the close reading of legal texts and contexts, Vining argues, that provides the present source of the transcendental in modern secular life. But unlike the other academic arts of interpretation, law alone is directly connected with the most real, the most particular and, at the same time, the most universal facts of social life. "From Newton's Sleep poses ultimate questions for a century that now approaches its end, casts doubt on certainties past and present, and creates new grounds for skepticism and conviction. The fragmentary form of the book mirrors its subject. It is intended to be picked up and read as occasion allows, especially at evening, by lawyers and all their fellow nonlawyers.

Metonymy in Contemporary Art: A New Paradigm

Product : Metonymy in Contemporary Art: A New Paradigm
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In Metonymy in Contemporary Art, Denise Green develops an original approach to art criticism and modes of creativity inspired by aspects of Australian Aboriginal and Indian thought. Interweaving her own evolution as an artist with critiques of Clement Greenberg and Walter Benjamin as well as commentary on artists such as Joseph Beuys, Mark Rothko, Frank Stella, and others, Green explores the concept of metonymic thinking as developed by the poet and linguist A. K. Ramanujan and its relevance to contemporary painting and aesthetics. In Ramanujan's formulation of metonymic thinking, the human and natural worlds are intrinsically related to one another as are the transcendent and mundane. When applied to contemporary art, metonymic thinking implies that one must understand that the creativity of the artist flows from a fusion of an inner state of mind and the outer material world. Pointing out how this alternative aesthetic and cognitive mode is left wanting in art criticism, Green argues for a critical discourse and interpretive mode in contemporary art that is at once global and pluralist in perspective. Denise Green is an Australian American artist and writer in New York City. Since 1972 her work has been the subject of over eighty-five solo exhibitions. She has collaborated as an editor for Semiotext(e) and is a member of the Graduate Faculty at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Her writings have appeared in Arts Magazine, Art Press, Art Monthly Australia, and Art and Australia. Pernicious Tolerance: How Teaching to "Accept Differences" Undermines Civil Society

Product : Pernicious Tolerance: How Teaching to "Accept Differences" Undermines Civil Society
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Recent decades have seen a consistent effort by the American educational establishment to instruct schoolchildren about the importance of "appreciating differences," all in the name of "tolerance," so as to quell burgeoning "hate." In Pernicious Tolerance, Robert Weissberg argues that educators' endless obsession with homophobia, sexism, racism, and other alleged hateful disorders is part of a much larger ongoing radical ideological quest to transform America, by first capturing education. In pursuing their objectives, radical pedagogues have abandoned the idea of tolerance of what some find objectionable. In its place they have adopted a fantasy--that tolerance can be replaced with a blank-check appreciation of diversity. Weissberg argues that this approach is guaranteed to promote civil strife. In rejecting a more workable version of tolerance, today's professional educators risk civic disaster in an effort to achieve legitimacy for those they believe are unfairly marginalized, stigmatized, underappreciated, and otherwise disdained. Weissberg also addresses the issue of an ever-expanding welfare state not only concerned with our material being, but, critically, also with our "mental health," defined as beliefs about the vulnerable or victims in waiting--women, ethnic and racial minorities, homosexuals, and others. He shows that this therapeutic state does not stop at imploring good thinking; it goes much further and criminalizes evil thoughts, as if thinking poorly of those at risk is tantamount to inflicting bodily harm. There is substantial collateral damage in this quest for tolerance; it facilitates intellectual sloth while raising anti-intellectualism to an honored professional norm.

Sectional Nationalism Sectional Nationalism Sectional Nationalism Sectional Nationalism Sectional Nation: Massachusetts Conservati

Product : Sectional Nationalism Sectional Nationalism Sectional Nationalism Sectional Nationalism Sectional Nation: Massachusetts Conservati
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : These privileged heirs of the eighteenth-century republican vision embraced a hierarchical, organic, and deferential view of society. Paradoxically, their role in America's burgeoning market economy laid the foundation for a new industrial order that would make the ethos they espoused obsolete. Beyond the political arena, these Massachusetts conservatives launched a broad and many-faceted crusade to impose their values on the nation, pursuing often contradictory goals in their attempts to contrive an American national identity. Harlow Sheidley examines how rapidly changing ideas about society and economics altered the conservative interpretation of republicanism. She analyzes a number of primary sources -- the writings of public figures ranging from John Quincy Adams to Daniel Webster, as well as newspapers and government documents -- to present their thought within its social context and show how these men reconciled their economic activity with their social ideology. Set against the background of social transformation and growing regionalism, Sectional Nationalism emphasizes the cultural dimensions of traditional political themes as it traces the persistence and ultimate demise of Federalist thought in its original stronghold. It demonstrates the dynamics of early nineteenth-century American politics and explains why the Massachusetts conservatives' response to the challenges of their time continues to influence the American historical imagination.

With Wings Like Eagles: A History of the Battle of Britain

Product : With Wings Like Eagles: A History of the Battle of Britain
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Michael Korda's brilliant work of history takes the reader back to the summer of 1940, when fewer than three thousand young fighter pilots of the Royal Air Force--often no more than nine hundred on any given day--stood between Hitler and the victory that seemed almost within his grasp. Korda re-creates the intensity of combat in "the long, delirious, burning blue" of the sky above southern England, and at the same time--perhaps for the first time--traces the entire complex web of political, diplomatic, scientific, industrial, and human decisions during the 1930s that led inexorably to the world's first, greatest, and most decisive air battle. Korda deftly interweaves the critical strands of the story--the invention of radar (the most important of Britain's military secrets); the developments by such visionary aircraft designers as R. J. Mitchell, Sidney Camm, and Willy Messerschmitt of the revolutionary, all-metal, high-speed monoplane fighters the British Spitfire and Hurricane and the German Bf 109; the rise of the theory of air bombing as the decisive weapon of modern warfare and the prevailing belief that "the bomber will always get through" (in the words of British prime minister Stanley Baldwin). As Nazi Germany rearmed swiftly after 1933, building up its bomber force, only one man, the central figure of Korda's book, Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding, the eccentric, infuriating, obstinate, difficult, and astonishingly foresighted creator and leader of RAF Fighter Command, did not believe that the bomber would always get through and was determined to provide Britain with a weapon few people wanted to believe was needed or even possible. Dowding persevered--despite opposition, shortage of funding, and bureaucratic infighting--to perfect the British fighter force just in time to meet and defeat the German onslaught. Korda brings to life the extraordinary men and women on both sides of the conflict, from such major historical figures as Winston Churchill, Neville Chamberlain, and Reichsmarschall Herman Goring (and his disputatious and bitterly feuding generals) to the British and German pilots, the American airmen who joined the RAF just in time for the Battle of Britain, the young airwomen of the RAF, the ground crews who refueled and rearmed the fighters in the middle of heavy German raids, and such heroic figures as Douglas Bader, Josef František, and the "Luftwaffe" aces Adolf Galland and his archrival Werner Molders. Winston Churchill memorably said about the Battle of Britain, "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few." Here is the story of "the few," and how they prevailed against the odds, deprived Hitler of victory, and saved the world during three epic months in 1940.

Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : The 2006 elections will be remembered as the year when the center of power in American politics shifted from traditional top-down central broadcasters to new bottom-up decentralized activists in the blogosphere and netroots. The authors give firsthand accounts of the burgeoning power of the netroots to determine the outcome of political contests, most notably as when the national balance of power was tipped by Jim Webb's rag-tag army of bloggers and netroots activists. They assess the prospects for Netroots 2.0: whether the netroots hordes will crash the party or work out an uneasy cohabitation with the traditional party power elite. The 2006 elections will be remembered as the year when the center of power in American politics shifted from traditional top-down central broadcasters to new bottom-up decentralized activists in the blogosphere and netroots. The authors give firsthand accounts of the burgeoning power of the netroots to determine the outcome of political contests, most notably as when the national balance of power was tipped by Jim Webb's rag-tag army of bloggers and netroots activists who provoked and exposed the gaffe that proved fatal to George Allen's senatorial bid. Veteran online campaigners Feld and Wilcox recount and analyze many other political campaigns in which netroots activism was decisive or instructive, including: * U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay's downfall. *Tim Kaine's election as Virginia govenor. *Howard Dean's and Wes Clark's presidential campaigns. *Ned Lamont's primary victory over Joe Lieberman. The authors conclude with an assessment of the prospects for Netroots 2.0: Will the netroots hordes crash the party or will they work out an uneasy cohabitation with the traditional party power elite? The foreword is written by Markos (Kos) Moulitsas Zuniga, founding editor of the world's biggest political blog, Daily Kos.

But long-closed wounds are reopened and secrets that each sibling has locked away come to light, as their father progresses into dementia and James encounters Rosemarie after nearly forty years of her absence. Overcoming Welfare: Expecting More from the Poor--And from Ourselves

Product : Overcoming Welfare: Expecting More from the Poor--And from Ourselves
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : A fundamental goal of today's welfare reform is to practice "expectant giving": to demand constructive steps from the needy in exchange for assistance. This idea is not new. Since the nineteenth century, every generation of reformers has declared that handouts are harmful--Franklin Roosevelt called them "a narcotic, a subtle destroyer of the human spirit."--and that aid must demand something of recipients. Liberals and conservatives, bureaucrats and church leaders have all agreed that the purpose of welfare is not simply to keep people housed and fed with giveaways but to raise them to a happier, more productive condition. Welfare should be "a hand up, not a hand out."Why, then, no matter how often welfare is reinvented, do we keep getting the system nobody wants? In "Overcoming Welfare," James Payne analyzes the roots of this recurring failure. Part of the problem, he observes, lies with modern social workers who have embraced the doctrine of meeting needs at all costs. Adding to the handout mentality is the ideology of income redistribution, which says the poor are automatically entitled to state giveaways. The most important cause of failure, however, is that government is not suited to carry out expectant giving. Such aid requires that the giver pass judgment; that recipients with different abilities and circumstances be treated unequally; that aid be withheld from recipients who don't keep their end of the bargain; and that a personal relationship of trust exist between giver and recipient. With their high caseloads, inflexible rules, and budgetary pressures to streamline aid, government welfare programs inevitably drift toward the handout approach. The future of charity belongs toprivate, voluntary efforts that have the sensitivity and discipline to meet the real needs of the poor. In his broad survey of the many different types of private assistance. Payne demonstrates that we can go beyond the sorry choice of being indulgent or being cruel--but only if we are willing to extend ourselves.

Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : When the Pullman family lost their eldest son to an unexpected illness just before Christmas, it was devastating to all of them, but especially to four-year-old Suzanna. She shared a special bond with her big brother. A strangely gifted child, Zanna loved to draw, but Ernie was the only one who was able to see the pictures in the curious patterns she made. Sadly, he never saw the Christmas drawing she had made for him that year. Suzanna grew up to be a famous artist, but to her family, that last painting she made for her big brother was her most important work. This is the story of that gift, and how it inspired the Pullman family to keep alive the spirit of love, imagination, and hope for generations to come.

Organizing China: The Problem of Bureaucracy, 1949-1976

Product : Organizing China: The Problem of Bureaucracy, 1949-1976
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Since the establishment of the People's Republic in 1949, Chinese Communist leaders have constructed an administrative apparatus that has exercised broader and tighter control over Chinese society than any previous government in the country's history. This is a history of the development of Chinese organizational policy - a topic of constant concern and often strident debate - from 1949 to the death of Mao Tse-tung in 1976. The author argues that Chinese organizational policy has been controversial because of the complexity of administrative problems, the effects of policy changes on the distribution of power and status, and the philosophical dilemma of whether the efficiency of modern bureaucracy outweighs its social and political costs. He also shows how extreme approaches, such as demands during the Cultural Revolution that bureaucracy be destroyed altogether or proposals during the 1950s that the bureaucracy be rationalized, have been repeatedly rejected in favor of a policy more in keeping with much of Chinese tradition: to recruit officials on the basis of their political views, subject them to ideological indoctrination, and rely on mass campaigns to implement Party policy.

    Coyote Morning

    Product : Coyote Morning
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : One spring morning Alison Lomez watches her daughter, Rachel, wait for the school bus in front of their house when she sees a coyote trot up to the seven-year-old and sit down. This encounter between species is the first of many in Lisa Lenard-Cook's novel of life in Valle Bosque, New Mexico. The village is only a short commute from Albuquerque, but it is home to a healthy population of these adaptable canines as well as a contentious group of humans who disagree vigorously on how to deal with their wild neighbors. Lisa Lenard-Cook introduces us to coyote supporters, coyote haters, and an animal control agent who secretly practices a "catch and release" program. Anyone who lives in the twenty-first-century West will recognize Lenard-Cooks sharp-eyed portrait of the edgy space between farms and suburbs, old timers and newcomers. But her witty send-up of the environmental issues that vex refugees from city life serves as a powerful and serious means of examining the ways human beings cope with life's mysteries and its inevitable dangers. The complex relations between men and women, parents and children, brothers and sisters that make up the daily lives of Lenard-Cook's characters will make readers reflect on their own lives and relationship to wildness. "Reminiscent of the best of Carol Shields and Sue Miller."--Kevin McIlvoy, author of "Hyssop" "A lyrical writer."--"Dallas Morning News"

Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : There's no better way to experience fine hospitality than by visiting a country inn. If you're lucky enough to be a guest at Saint John's Inn on the Cove, you'll also discover beautifully prepared meals. For Tide's Table, innkeepers Ross and Willa Mavis have updated traditional Maritime recipes and added hundreds of new ones. The result is a cookbook based on the food traditions of the diverse cultures of Canada's east coast. Ross and Willa Mavis are the ultimate hosts, and Tide's Table reflects their relaxed sense of hospitality. Drawing upon their love of cooking, the Mavises preface each of their recipes with an amusing, and often enlightening, anecdote. They also include special tips such as how to make the perfect "hard-boiled" egg and how to serve a simple cup of tea. Tide's Table is an ideal companion from morning until night, with recipes ranging from simple entrees to special holiday fare. Opening with "Bountiful Beginnings" and concluding with "Sweet Finale", the Mavises include recipes such as their own blueberry blintz and a traditional Maritime Gingerbread House that even Martha Stewart would admire. Willa, dubbed "the Queen of Condiments" by CBC Radio's Vicki Gabereau, leads readers through the preparation of pickles and relishes, ranging from updated versions of chow chow and chili sauce to a cool cucumber relish. Ross demonstrates how to prepare savoury treats such as Creamy Fiddlehead Soup, Lobster Stuffed Chicken (a Valentine's Day creation), and Herbed Salmon Loaf. Featuring more than 200 recipes and dozens of special tips as well as metric and imperial measurements, Tide's Table is an indispensable Maritime cookbook for contemporary kitchens. The Lobo Outback Funeral Home

Product : The Lobo Outback Funeral Home
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : The Lobo Outback Funeral Home is a novel about commitment -- or, rather, the consequences of shirking commitment. Earth First founder Dave Foreman unfolds the story of burned-out and disillusioned Sierra Club lobbyist Jack Hunter, who leaves Washington, D. C., for his family's cabin in southwestern New Mexico's Diablo National Forest. Convinced there is nothing he or anyone else can do to stop humankind's war on nature, he returns to his old trade of horseshoeing, determined not to become involved again in conservation issues. Nevertheless, he finds himself falling for the leader of the Diablo Wilderness Committee, Dr. MaryAnne McClellan, a biologist who is as pretty as she is tough. She tries to draw him into the campaign to protect the Diablo Wilderness Area from Forest Service logging plans, and she also wants to involve him when a pack of lobos -- Mexican wolves -- are reintroduced to this wilderness bordering a small ranching community. Hunter refuses to commit to either MaryAnne or the lobos, however, and he is soon caught up in the bloody consequences of his cynicism, discovering the true cost of not taking a stand for what he loves.
