Patent Laws for Scientists and Engineers

Product : Patent Laws for Scientists and Engineers
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Although many texts attempt to explain intellectual property law to scientists and engineers, they are ineffective because they fail to present the subject within the proper scope; they are either too expansive or too detailed for the needs of researchers and inventors. Instead of giving a mile-high view of all types of intellectual property or, at the other extreme, turning readers into pseudo-patent attorneys, Patent Law for Scientists and Engineers provides researchers and students with an understanding of the aspects of patent law necessary to work with patent professionals and enhance patent coverage. The editor has structured the text so it can be easily integrated into a reader's research routine. Each chapter supports the issues discussed with fact patterns that emphasize the steps necessary to protect patent rights. The book describes actual scenarios encountered by scientists and engineers, highlighting the protection of latent patent rights that may exist within an invention or technical solution.

Perverse Romanticism: Aesthetics and Sexuality in Britain, 1750--1832

Product : Perverse Romanticism: Aesthetics and Sexuality in Britain, 1750--1832
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Richard C. Sha's revealing study considers how science shaped notions of sexuality, reproduction, and gender in the Romantic period. Through careful and imaginative readings of various scientific texts, the philosophy of Immanuel Kant and Longinus, and the works of such writers as William Blake, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Mary Wollstonecraft, and Lord Byron, Sha explores the influence of contemporary aesthetics and biology on literary Romanticism. Revealing that ideas of sexuality during the Romantic era were much more fluid and undecided than they are often characterized in the existing scholarship, Sha's innovative study complicates received claims concerning the shift from perversity to perversion in the nineteenth century. He observes that the questions of perversity -- or purposelessness -- became simultaneously critical in Kantian aesthetics, biological functionalism, and Romantic ideas of private and public sexuality. The Romantics, then, sought to reconceptualize sexual pleasure as deriving from mutuality rather than from the biological purpose of reproduction. At the nexus of Kantian aesthetics, literary analysis, and the history of medicine, Perverse Romanticism makes an important contribution to the study of sexuality in the long eighteenth century.

Product : Making Theory/Constructing Art: On the Authority of the Avant-Garde
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Artists and critics regularly enlist theory in the creation and assessment of artworks, but few have scrutinized the art theories themselves. Here, Daniel examines and critiques the norms, assumptions, historical conditions, and institutions that have framed the development and uses of art theory. Spurred by the theoretical claims of Arthur Danto, a leader in the philosophy of the avant-garde, Herwitz reexamines the art and theory of major figures in the avant-garde movement including John Cage, Jean-Francois Lyotard, Jean Baudrillard, and Andy Warhol.

Art: Histories, Theories and Exceptions

Product : Art: Histories, Theories and Exceptions
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Our understanding of art has undergone several major upheavals in the last thirty years. Postmodernism and mass media began the process of disruption in the 1980s. The explosion in the use of digital technologies since the 1990s has radically altered the way art is now created, perceived and made available. The recent shift towards regarding art as part of a broader "visual culture" has torn art theory from its roots in art history and placed it in the context of anthropological, cultural and media theory."Art: Histories, Theories and Exceptions" explores what art in its broadest sense--from Aboriginal work to the Western art market, from the role of museums to new media interactivity, from the mainstream to the radical--means today. This provocative book will be invaluable to students, practicing artists and general readers alike.

Regulating from the Inside: Can Environmental Management Systems Achieve Policy Goals?

Product : Regulating from the Inside: Can Environmental Management Systems Achieve Policy Goals?
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : "Regulating from the Inside moves beyond the common puffery to provide careful and balanced analyses. It brings together significant research on the role of EMSs and effectively combines policy and business literature. Its discussions of business motivations and the connections between an EMS and competing values are well nuanced." -- Marc Allen Eisner, Wesleyan University Environmental Management Systems (EMSs) offer an approach to regulatory policy that lies somewhere between free market and traditional command and control methods. Worldwide, hundreds of thousands of private firms have adopted or are considering adopting these internally managed systems for improving environmental performance. In the U.S., the Environmental Protection Agency has established a special recognition for firms that, among other things, adopt EMSs. And, already, numerous state agencies have proposed or adopted so-called green tier systems under which firms with EMSs can be exempted from otherwise applicable requirements. Yet, while both private and public sector interest in EMSs has been booming, the enthusiasm of proponents contrasts sharply with the limited empirical evidence that is available about the efficacy of EMSs in fulfilling environmental goals while lowering costs. To close the gap between advocacy and analysis, Regulating from the Inside brings together cutting-edge work of leading scholars, providing the most comprehensive analysis to date of environmental management systems. Intended to frame the future policy and the research agenda about EMSs, the discussions are organized around two critical questions: How have EMSs worked in firms that have already adopted them? What potential andlimitations do they have as policy tools in the future? Addressing the arguments of both advocates and the skeptics, the chapters examine why firms adopt EMSs; how firms implement EMSs; how EMSs answer concerns about fairness, corporate social responsibility, and sustainability; and what kind of impact EMSs may have on the global economy. As the editors note, while the EMS "train" has left the station, there remain many issues about how well EMSs function and how they should be considered as an instrument for public policymaking. Coglianese, Nash, and their contributors begin to provide some of the answers. For business, environmental specialists, the legal community, and students of regulatory reform, Regulating from the Inside is a timely, extremely relevant publication. Contributors include: Deborah Amaral, Richard N.L. Andrews, Cary Coglianese, Nicole Darnall, Derek Davison, John Ehrenfeld, Eric Feldman, Richard Florida, Deborah Rigling Gallagher, Suellen Terrill Keiner, Shelley H. Metzenbaum, Matthew Mitchell, William R. Moomaw, Jennifer Nash, Theodore Panayotou, and Jerry Speir.

Canon and Mission

Product : Canon and Mission
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : The theme of this book is that the biblical canon, read as a whole, calls for mission, and mission emerges from and always has need of the biblical canon for its witness in and to the world. The Bible, from Genesis to Revelation is, according to Beeby, a "handbook of mission."He expresses concern over certain critical approaches to the Bible that identify "authentic" texts and ignore other texts because of their dubious origins or value. Still, he acknowledges differences and difficulties within the Bible but suggests that it be seen and a whole, in its entirety, as a "unity of unities." Specifically, he proposes the Exodus theme as a way of understanding both the canonical unity of the Bible and Christianity s mission in today s world, a mission that must include interfaith dialogue. The canon moves from creation to new creation, Beeby writes, and this movement of renewal, restoration, and redemption is through a sent (missio) nation, son, and community.H. Dan Beeby has served as a missionary in China and Professor of Old Testament at Taiwan Theological College. He is the author of Grace Abounding: A Commentary on the Book of Hosea, and is currently Consultant to the British and Foreign Bible Society.>

Educating for Humanity: Rethinking the Purposes of Education

Product : Educating for Humanity: Rethinking the Purposes of Education
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : The promise and necessity of working toward 'a world for all' is a viable aspiration for education at a time when the worldwide crises in social justice, peace, democracy, and ecological integrity have become the defining issues of our times. Ample evidence from many schools today, and dating back throughout the last century, proves that the purpose of educating young people of character, compassion, purpose, and commitment is integral with the mastery of intellectual skills and life competencies. Self and school subjects develop interdependently. But, as the saying goes, 'if you don't know where you're going, you'll probably get someplace else'. Educational policy directions over the last twenty years have veered far away from the important work of educating for humanity. This book makes a powerful appeal to revisit educational purpose in light of what is most fundamental and important to human beings everywhere. The authors address timely issues such as high stakes testing, school choice, and privatization of education in looking beyond these measures to new approaches to educational excellence.

Symmetry in Chaos: A Search for Pattern in Mathematics, Art, and Nature

Product : Symmetry in Chaos: A Search for Pattern in Mathematics, Art, and Nature
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Chaotic dynamics (known popularly as chaos theory or, more simply, chaos) is among the most fascinating new fields in modern science, revolutionizing our understanding of order and pattern in nature. Symmetry, a traditional and highly developed area of mathematics, would seem to lie at the opposite end of the spectrum. From the branching of trees to the rose windows of great cathedrals, symmetric patterns seem the antithesis of such chaotic systems as weather patterns. And yet, scientists are now finding connections between these two areas, connections which could have profound consequences for our understanding of the physical world. In Symmetry in Chaos, mathematicians Michael Field and Martin Golubitsky offer an engaging look at where these two fields meet. In the process, they have generated mathematically a series of stunning computer images linking symmetry and chaos. Field and Golubitsky describe how a chaotic process eventually can lead to symmetric patterns (in a river, for instance, photographs of the turbulent movement of eddies, taken over time, often reveal patterns on average) and they provide clear explanations of the science that lies behind the generation of these pictures. And the images they generate are spectacular. Because of the symmetry, these full-color and black-and-white images--some chaotic and some fractal--have a surprisingly classical appearance. Indeed, through comparisons with pictures from nature, such as sea shells and flowers, and decorative designs ranging from Islamic motifs to contemporary graphic logos to ceramic tiles, the authors highlight the familiar yet unusual nature of these mysterious pictures. Finally, the book features an appendix containing several BASIC programs, which will enable home computer owners to experiment with similar images. This lavishly illustrated, oversized volume offers both a fascinating glimpse of the frontier of modern science and a stunning collection of remarkable images. Symmetry in Chaos will intrigue science buffs as well as anyone interested in decorative art and pattern design.

Towards Coherence Between Classroom Assessment and Accountabtowards Coherence Between Classroom Assessment and Accountabtowards Co

Product : Towards Coherence Between Classroom Assessment and Accountabtowards Coherence Between Classroom Assessment and Accountabtowards Co
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In analyses of the role of national educational assessment, insufficient attention has been paid to the central place of the classroom. Rather than encouraging a two-way flow of information, today's "standards-based" frameworks tend to direct the flow of accountability from the outside into the classroom. The authors of this volume emphasize that assessment, as it exists in schools today, consists mainly of the measurements that teachers themselves design, evaluate, and act upon every day. Improving the usefulness of assessment in schools primarily requires assisting and harnessing this flood of assessment information, both as a means of learning within the classroom and as the source of crucial information flowing out of classrooms. This volume aims to encourage debate and reflection among educational researchers, professionals, and policymakers. Five source chapters describe successful classroom assessment models developed in partnership with teachers, while additional commentaries give a range of perspectives on the issues of classroom assessment, standardized testing, and accountability.

The Sceptred Isle Club

Product : The Sceptred Isle Club
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In 1905, John Le Brun makes his first excursion to England to visit import broker Geoffrey Moore. Le Brun and Moore became friends six years earlier while Le Brun was Sheriff of Brunswick, Georgia and enmeshed in a perplexing murder case at the very exclusive Jekyl Island Club. Now retired, the self-taught Le Brun is fulfilling a long-standing dream of measuring himself against the greatest minds in the greatest city of the greatest empire of that era. Upon his arrival, Moore introduces Le Brun to the social world of the 'men's club' - hundreds of which exist in and about London, where men of similar backgrounds and often great power meet. Chief among Le Brun's new acquaintances is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author and inventor of the great fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes. While visiting the Sceptred Isle Club, where the ex-sheriff is scheduled to give a lecture, Le Brun and Doyle hear a series of muffled gunshots. A tandem investigation reveals that several prominent men have been murdered inside the gambling room, where the inner door was locked and the heavily-bolted outer door was inexplicably unlocked. There are no survivors, no suspects, and no signs of either the weapon used in the crime or the thousands of pounds being gambled. Le Brun is retained by the club to solve the murders and preserve its reputation. Moving as a stranger in this Edwardian world of elegance and privilege, John Le Brun must unravel a Byzantine crime whose purpose has wide-reaching implications for the entire British Empire.

Description : Can a former fidelity inspector tear herself away from her old calling for the sake of the perfect guy, or is the temptation to conduct love under cover just too strong?Jennifer Hunter never saw herself as the relationship type. After all, she'd spent the last two years of her life as an undercover fidelity inspector, hired to test men's faithfulness--not exactly the kind of job that lends itself to intimacy. But when Jamie Richards walked into her life, everything changed, and Jennifer vowed to trade in her undercover lifestyle for something more normal. That's why she formed the Hawthorne Agency: five full-time fidelity inspectors, hired to carry out Jennifer's mission while she manages the process from a safe (relationship-saving) distance. Jen's business is booming, and just when it seems like things can't possibly get any better, Jamie proposes. Despite her lifelong issues with trust and commitment, Jen says yes. But can a woman who's seen nothing but failed marriages ever come to terms with tying the knot herself? And when Jen receives a frantic phone call from one of her employees in trouble, she's forced to make a choice. A choice that lands her in an all-too familiar place--a strange hotel room, kissing another man. And she knows that nothing will be the same.

Second Creation: Dolly and the Age of Biological Control

Product : Second Creation: Dolly and the Age of Biological Control
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : When Ian Wilmut and Keith Campbell of the Roslin Institute announced in February 1997 that they had cloned Dolly from the cell of an adult sheep, fears were expressed that it would only be a matter of time before human cloning became feasible. "This is an outcome I hope never comes to pass, " writes Wilmut. "But the ability to make clones from cultured cells derived from easily obtained tissue should bring numerous practical benefits in animal husbandry and medical science, as well as answer critical biological questions." In this definitive book, the authors explain the possibilities -- good and bad -- that have been opened up by their revolutionary new techniques. Genetically modified animal organs might be used for transplantation into humans. Animals engineered for specific genetic defects "that mimic human illnesses" could greatly add to our understanding of many diseases; they could also be utilized "more directly in cell-based therapies for important illnesses, including Parkinson's disease, diabetes, and muscular dystrophy." But what are the ethical issues raised by this pioneering research, and how can we better understand its implications? Written with the award-winning science writer Colin Tudge, The Second Creation is a landmark work detailing arguably the most exciting -- and challenging -- scientific discovery of the twentieth century.

Nothing to Lose

Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Two lonely towns in Colorado: Hope and Despair. Between them, twelve miles of empty road. Jack Reacher never turns back. It's not in his nature. All he wants is a cup of coffee. What he gets is big trouble. So in Lee Child's electrifying new novel, Reacher--a man with no fear, no illusions, and nothing to lose--goes to war against a town that not only wants him gone, it wants him dead. It wasn't the welcome Reacher expected. He was just passing through, minding his own business. But within minutes of his arrival a deputy is in the hospital and Reacher is back in Hope, setting up a base of operations against Despair, where a huge, seething walled-off industrial site does something nobody is supposed to see . . . where a small plane takes off every night and returns seven hours later . . . where a garrison of well-trained and well-armed military cops--the kind of soldiers Reacher once commanded--waits and watches . . . where above all two young men have disappeared and two frightened young women wait and hope for their return. Joining forces with a beautiful cop who runs Hope with a cool hand, Reacher goes up against Despair--against the deputies who try to break him and the rich man who tries to scare him--and starts to crack open the secrets, starts to expose the terrifying connection to a distant war that's killing Americans by the thousand. Now, between a town and the man who owns it, between Reacher and his conscience, something has to give. And Reacher never gives an inch.

Islam in the Political Process

Product : Islam in the Political Process
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : The Iranian revolution greatly aroused outsiders' curiosity and misunderstanding of Islam. The relatively easy overthrow of the Shah and the pronouncements of the new Iranian regime brought to the forefront an image of 'militant Islam' which has survived in one form or another since the Crusades. At the time, there was the assumption in the West that Islam was inevitably revolutionary, militant, or at least anti-Western and that the Iranian example was likely to be repeated in Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and other countries where Muslims predominated. Originally published in paperback in 1983, this book was designed to examine such assumptions and to analyse the complex roles which Islam plays in the political process of several countries. Although the authors called upon the insights of various disciplines, and chose different approaches, they all shared the conviction that the idea of 'Islamic politics' needed to be made specific if crude stereotypes about Islam were to be avoided.

But his quiet existence is shattered when he receives an anonymous e-mail: "You have something I want. You're the only person on earth who knows where to find it. Go get it. You have 72 hours. If I don't hear from you, you will be childless." His horrified ex-wife confirms that the threat is real: Their teenage son has been kidnapped. When Malone's Copenhagen bookshop is burned to the ground, it becomes brutally clear that those responsible will stop at nothing to get what they want. And what they want is nothing less than the lost Library of Alexandria. A cradle of ideas-historical, philosophical, literary, scientific, and religious-the Library of Alexandria was unparalleled in the world. Now a cartel of wealthy international moguls, bent on altering the course of history, is desperate to breach the library's hallowed halls-and only Malone possesses the information they need to succeed. Martin also presents eight original tables that trace the evolution of the 60 largest Canadian corporations between 1905 and 2005. Relentless Change is an invaluable resource for instructors and business students and clearly demonstrates how businesses are affected by the interaction of individual decisions, policy changes, and market trends.

In My Family Tree: A Life with Chimpanzees

Product : In My Family Tree: A Life with Chimpanzees
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Sheila Siddle's life was changed forever one fateful day in 1983 when a local game ranger brought a battered, malnourished chimpanzee to the door of her cattle ranch in central Zambia and asked her to do whatever possible to save it. As Sheila and her husband nursed it back to health, they treated the young chimp they would name Pal as if he were a human infant -- feeding him medicine and bottled milk, sharing their bed with him at night, and carrying him on their backs until he regained the strength to survive on his own. From these humble beginnings Sheila and David Siddle would go on to launch the Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage, an internationally acclaimed animal refuge that has grown to become the home for more than eighty chimps, one disarmingly domesticated hippopotamus named Billy, and a variety of other endangered animals. Currently the largest primate sanctuary in the world, Chimfunshi has been honored by the United Nations Environmental Programme as one of the Global 500 and called by Jane Goodall "the most wonderful place on earth." In My Family Tree is the uplifting story behind one woman's transformation from a grandmother on the brink of retirement to an international animal-rights activist -- and the unforgettable chimpanzees she has come to know and love along the way.

Seven Wonders of Ancient Central and South America

Product : Seven Wonders of Ancient Central and South America
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Long ago, Greek writers created a list of the seven wonders of the world. But that list only included the incredible monuments and other marvelous structures the writers knew about - which were all located in Greece and its surrounding countries. The writers were not aware of the many wonders in other parts of the world. Hundreds of years before European explorers crossed the Atlantic, civilizations were thriving and creating other wonders in Central and South America. They built a royal city, high in rugged mountains. They created pictures in the earth so large that their design can be seen only from an airplane. They recorded their history on the steps of a giant stone staircase. What other wonders did the people of early Central and South America leave behind? To find out, look among ancient temples and tombs, the villages of peasant farmers, and abandoned cities taken over by jungle growth. You're about to begin your search for the seven wonders of Ancient Central and South America

Inside Television's First War: A Saigon Journal

Product : Inside Television's First War: A Saigon Journal
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Inside Television's First War recounts Ron Steinman's tenure as head of the NBC News Bureau in Saigon from April 1966 until July 1968. This was a time during the Vietnam conflict that included the major American buildup and the Tet Offensive of 1968 and saw much of America turn from support of the war to opposition. During this period, television journalists learned how to report war in a distinctly new way: through the eye of a camera on the front lines, in the countryside, in cities, towns, and villages. The experience of a living-room war was new, and its effects are still being felt today. Yet in our own era of high-tech journalism and hasty judgment, Vietnam's lessons are all but forgotten. Steinman and his colleagues, mostly quite young, were covering an increasingly controversial war. They were going places and doing things that had never before been done on such a scale for an international audience. They used film that had to be shipped and then developed because satellites were rarely used before 1968. Correspondents and crews often drove to their assignments in rented cars, whether covering a battle, a riot, a political event, or a military briefing. When necessary, they resorted to military flights or erratic, unsafe commercial airlines. The author also reveals glimpses into his personal life. He writes of his courtship of Josephine Tu Ngoc Suong, a young Vietnamese woman who was seriously wounded and near death in 1967. After her recovery, she and Steinman were married and had three children together. And he tells the story of his brother-in-law, a prisoner in a Communist reeducation camp after the war, to whom he tried to smuggle money and medicine during a visit in1985. Inside Television's First War is a behind-the-scenes look at how the Vietnam conflict influenced young journalists, and how their coverage of the war influenced the American public. Steinman offers an intimate portrait of what became the biggest story of many people's lives. History buffs and the general reader alike will benefit from this valuable contribution to understanding America's coverage of Vietnam.

Description : Tom Seiler has vices and virtues. He drinks, swears, and often struggles with his perception of revenge and justice. But the former NASA design engineer also sees life in simple terms - right is right and wrong is wrong. An expert at all things mechanical, Seiler and his family are drawn into a dangerous conspiracy involving a tractor-trailer collision killing four siblings in the small town of Alvin, Texas. During his analysis of the accident, he methodically discovers that a powerful Houston attorney, in a pre-tort reform strike at the trucking industry, planned and orchestrated the murders. The stakes in Bad Intentions are immense - an up side of a quarter of a billion dollars or a down side of lethal injection at The Walls prison in Huntsville, Texas. Geographically stretching from Houston to the beaches of Indianola, Seadrift and Port Aransas, Texas, Bad Intentions weaves a captivating tale of terror and ultimately carries Tom into a life and death struggle at an abandoned airstrip. He complicates matters during courtroom litigation with his stunning accusation that the attorney has committed murder. Zero Hour

Product : Zero Hour
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : An autobiographical novel of World War I experiences in the German ranks, Georg Grabenhorst's Zero Hour equates duty with camaraderie and thereby finds a greater balance between bitterness and hawkishness than much of war fiction. The war is experienced here through the keen eyes of Hans Volkenborn, a well-bred officer-candidate whose youthful enthusiasm turns to angst and disillusion. The sole comfort of his experience is the fellowship he enjoys with comrades, but even that abates over time.Grabenhorst recalls specifics of battlefield actions on the western front with a visceral language that still resonates today. Of particular historical importance are accounts of combat in the Ypres campaign in 1917 and the futile clashes in the woods of Aveluy in northern France the following summer as German hopes for victory faded. But the novel's greatest success lies with Grabenhorst's vivid description of shell shock, in this case the result of being briefly buried alive by a mortar round. The condition ultimately engulfs Volkenborn's ailing psyche and leaves him tormented, isolated, and blinded at the war's end.

Strategy of Deception

Product : Strategy of Deception
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Tearing aside the veil of hypocrisy in which the USA and its allies shrouded the Kosovo war, Paul Virilio here makes a trenchant denunciation of its perpetration. Written with his characteristic flair, Virilio's latest book is a trenchant denunciation of the Kosovo war in which he successfully unites theory with a riveting study of the conflict. Tearing aside the veil of hypocrisy in which the USA and its allies wrapped the war, Virilio demonstrates that the nature of the bombing was set by strategic rather than ethical considerations. Beneath the humanitarian rhetoric, Virilio sees a sinister innovation in the methods of waging war: territorial space is being replaced by orbital space in which a system of global telesurveillance is linked to the destructive power of bombers and missiles. Governments, the military and the media are becoming part of a seamless and self-justifying process linked by new information and arms technologies. Passionate and political, Strategy of Deception is a vital examination not only of the war in Yugoslavia but also what Virilio calls our 'fin-de-siecle infantilisation' in which the reality of battle is reduced to flickering images on a screen.

The dispute was finally settled when one of them secured himself to a chimney, and, with the help of a policeman who stopped traffic on the Embankment, finally achieved the feat. Rumsfeld: A Personal Portrait

Product : Rumsfeld: A Personal Portrait
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : The ultimate, behind-the-scenes look at the Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld, as he prosecutes the sprawling war on terror and emerges as a figure second only to the President in his ability to capture the country's attention and confidence. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has become the leading spokesman for the Bush administration on all matters related to the military and its prosecution of the war on terror. Midge Decter, an accomplished political jounalist who has enjoyed over two decades of personal friendship with Rumsfeld, will answer the question of why and how he has come to play such a critical role at this obviously critical moment. Partly biographical and partly analytical, the book will focus on Rumsfeld's past and current activities as well as what he represents: an ethos of sturdiness, frankness, and resilience that has clearly resonated with the American public in a post-Clinton wartime era. Decter has gained Rumsfeld's full cooperation, and she will trail him through the Pentagon and beyond as he prosecutes the war on terror, including any impending military campaign against Iraq. The daily stresses of advising the president, handling the media, crafting military policy, and dealing with issues of life and death will be examined from the inside--as it is happening. This book will offer a dynamic, intimate, behind-the-scenes look at the biggest political star (apart from the president himself) of the Bush administration.

Full of Grace

Product : Full of Grace
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Hilton Head, a South Carolina retirement heaven -- at least it's supposed to be, but for Big Al and Connie Russo, the move from New Jersey to this southern paradise has been fraught with just a few complications. Especially for their daughter, Grace. Well, that's what she likes to be called. Her family insists on Maria Graziella. Seriously, enough with the Neapolitan. That might have been okay in New Jersey, but now it's just plain silly, and Grace at thirty-two is, horror of horrors, still unmarried. No wonder her family drives her crazy. Well, that and the fact that she's living with the man she would marry if they both weren't so commitment phobic. Michael is a doctor and a scientist and Grace is pretty sure he's also an atheist. Over the years, Grace has become a bit ambivalent about her faith, but her family is as old-fashioned Italian as they come. The stage is set for a major showdown that just might change Grace's outlook on life, family, and the new South.

Wishin' and Hopin': A Christmas Story

Product : Wishin' and Hopin': A Christmas Story
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : It's 1964 and ten-year-old Felix is sure of a few things: the birds and the bees are puzzling, television is magical, and this is one Christmas he'll never forget. LBJ and Lady Bird are in the White House, "Meet the Beatles" is on everyone's turntable, and Felix Funicello (distant cousin of the iconic Annette ) is doing his best to navigate fifth grade--easier said than done when scary movies still give you nightmares and you bear a striking resemblance to a certain adorable cartoon boy. Back in his beloved fictional town of Three Rivers, Connecticut, with a new cast of endearing characters, Wally Lamb takes his readers straight into the halls of St. Aloysius Gonzaga Parochial School--where Mother Filomina's word is law and goody-two-shoes Rosalie Twerski is sure to be minding everyone's business. But grammar and arithmetic move to the back burner this holiday season with the sudden arrivals of substitute teacher Madame Frechette, straight from QuEbec, and feisty Russian student Zhenya Kabakova. While Felix learns the meaning of French kissing, cultural misunderstanding, and "tableaux vivants," "Wishin' and Hopin'" barrels toward one outrageous Christmas. From the Funicello family's bus-station lunch counter to the elementary school playground (with an uproarious stop at the Pillsbury Bake-Off), "Wishin' and Hopin'" is a vivid slice of 1960s life, a wise and witty holiday tale that celebrates where we've been--and how far we've come.

The Mayor of Casterbridge

Product : The Mayor of Casterbridge
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Thomas Hardy's fascination with the dualities inherent in human nature is at the root of The Mayor of Casterbridge, now in a brand-new edition. In a drunken fit Michael Henchard sells his wife and infant daughter to a sailor at a country fair; when sobriety returns the following day, he is unable to find and reclaim his family. Vowing to transform his life, he settles in the town of Casterbridge, where he eventually rises to the position of mayor. Henchard is a man whose impulses are at war with one another, and when his wife and daughter, now a young woman, appear in Casterbridge, these internal contradictions drive him to commit acts that spell his final destruction. Employing the elements of classic tragedy Hardy took the English novel in a new direction, emerging as both the last Victorian novelist and the first modern one, and defines themes that would occupy such twentieth-century writers as Conrad and Lawrence.

The Jewish Cultural Tapestry: International Jewish Folk Traditions

Product : The Jewish Cultural Tapestry: International Jewish Folk Traditions
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Here, in one compact volume, is an illuminating survey of Jewish folkways on five continents. Filled with fascinating facts and keen insights, The Jewish Cultural Tapestry is a richly woven fabric that vividly captures the diversity of Jewish life. All Jews are bound together by the common thread of the Torah and the Talmud, notes author Steven Lowenstein, but this thread takes on a different coloration in different parts of the world, as Jewish tradition and local non-Jewish customs intertwine. Lowenstein describes these widely varying regional Jewish cultures with needlepoint accuracy, highlighting the often surprising similarities between Jewish and non-Jewish local traditions, and revealing why Jewish customs vary as much as they do from region to region. We visit the great Ashkenazic and Sephardic cultures of Europe and the Mediterranean; the unique Jewish cultures of Iraq, Persia, Ethiopia and Yemen; the little-known cultures of the Bukharian Jews of Central Asia, the Cochin Jews of India, and the Kaifeng Jews of China. We read about regional religious practices, wedding ceremonies and marriage customs; different traditions of Jewish music and Jewish dress; and the origins of Jewish names. Lowenstein also surveys Jewish cuisine around the world, offering easy-to-prepare traditional recipes, ranging from kugel and blintzes to Malawach from Yemen, T'beet from Iraq, Mina de Cordero from Turkey, and Passover Soup from Uzbekistan. From Europe to India, Israel to America, The Jewish Cultural Tapestry offers an engaging overview of the customs and folkways of a people united by tradition, yet scattered to the far corners of the earth. Packaged in an attractive large format, this beautifully illustrated volume would be a meaningful gift for the holidays.

Road to Ruin: An Introduction to Sprawl and How to Cure It

Product : Road to Ruin: An Introduction to Sprawl and How to Cure It
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : What causes sprawl, and are there sensible solutions to its aggravating problems? Since the end of World War II, America has been obsessed with a desire to improve conditions for cars, not people, primarily through enormous subsidies for road widening and construction of free parking. Not only does this obsession worsen conditions for motorists (at great public expense), it traps communities in a vicious cycle that delivers a declining, sprawling, financially bankrupting future--regardless of the quality of regulations, plans, planners, or elected officials. Nozzi delivers an easy-to-follow introduction to sprawl's causes and offers common-sense solutions available to communities. The time is ripe for resurrecting the tradition of designing that makes people, not cars, happy. The key is returning to modest, human-scaled streets, parking, land use, and development regulations. Design principles encouraging walking, bicycling, and mass transit in conjunction with automobile travel are essential to creating livable cities once again. A professional city planner for over 15 years, Nozzi has firsthand knowledge of what works, what doesn't, and what real-world obstacles are faced when dealing with sprawl. Aimed at people who want an insider's introduction to our road, traffic, and land-use problems, this book is a useful guide to both professional planners and citizens concerned about the future of their own communities.
