Description : HEATHER WELLS ROCKS Or, at least, she "did. That was before she left the pop-idol life behind after she gained a dress size or two -- and lost a boyfriend, a recording contract, and her life savings (when Mom took the money and ran off to Argentina). Now that the glamour and glory days of endless mall appearances are in the past, Heather's perfectly happy with her new size 12 shape (the average for the American woman ) and her new job as an assistant dorm director at one of New York's top colleges. That is, until the dead body of a female student from Heather's residence hall is discovered at the bottom of an elevator shaft. The cops and the college president are ready to chalk the death off as an accident, the result of reckless youthful mischief. But Heather "knows teenage girls . . . and girls "do not elevator surf. Yet no one wants to listen -- not the police, her colleagues, or the P.I. who owns the brownstone where she lives -- even when more students start turning up dead in equally ordinary and subtly sinister ways. So Heather makes the decision to take on yet another new career: as spunky girl detective But her new job comes with few benefits, no cheering crowds, and "lots of liabilities, some of them potentially fatal. And nothing ticks off a killer more than a portly ex-pop star who's sticking her nose where it doesn't belong . . .

Shadowing Ralph Ellison

Product : Shadowing Ralph Ellison
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In 1952, Ralph Ellison (1914-1994) published his novel "Invisible Man," which transformed the dynamics of American literature. The novel won the National Book Award, extended the themes of his early short stories, and dramatized in fictional form the cultural theories expressed in his later essay collections "Shadow & Act" and "Going to the Territory." In "Shadowing Ralph Ellison," John Wright traces Ellison's intellectual and aesthetic development and the evolution of his cultural philosophy throughout his long career. The book explores Ellison's published fiction, his criticism and correspondence, and his passionate exchanges with--and impact on--other literary intellectuals during the Cold War 1950s and during the culture wars of the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. Wright examines Ellison's body of work through the lens of Ellison's cosmopolitan philosophy of art and culture, which the writer began to construct during the late 1930s. Ellison, Wright argues, eschewed orthodoxy in both political and cultural discourse, maintaining that to achieve the highest cultural awareness and the greatest personal integrity, the individual must cultivate forms of thinking and acting that are fluid, improvisational, and vitalistic--like the blues and jazz. Accordingly, Ellison elaborated throughout his body of work the innumerable ways that rigid cultural labels, categories, and concepts--from racial stereotypes and fashionable academic theories to conventional political doctrines--fail to capture the full potential of human consciousness. Instead, Ellison advocated forms of consciousness and culture akin to what the blues and jazz reveal, and he portrayed those musical traditions as the best embodiment of the evolving American spirit. John Wright is associate professor of African American and African studies and English at the University of Minnesota and is faculty scholar for the Archie Givens, Sr., Collection of African American Literature and Life. He coedited, with Michael S. Harper, "A Ralph Ellison Festival" (a special volume of the Carleton Miscellany).

The Path Not Taken: French Industrialization in the Age of Revolution, 1750-1830

Product : The Path Not Taken: French Industrialization in the Age of Revolution, 1750-1830
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In "The Path Not Taken," Jeff Horn argues that--contrary to standard, Anglocentric accounts--French industrialization was not a failed imitation of the laissez-faire British model but the product of a distinctive industrial policy that led, over the long term, to prosperity comparable to Britain's. Despite the upheavals of the Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars, France developed and maintained its own industrial strengths. France was then able to take full advantage of the new technologies and industries that emerged in the "second industrial revolution," and by the end of the nineteenth century some of France's industries were outperforming Britain's handily. "The Path Not Taken" shows that the foundations of this success were laid during the first industrial revolution. Horn posits that the French state's early attempt to emulate Britain's style of industrial development foundered because of revolutionary politics. The "threat from below" made it impossible for the state or entrepreneurs to control and exploit laborers in the British manner. The French used different means to manage labor unruliness and encourage innovation and entrepreneurialism. Technology is at the heart of Horn's analysis, and he shows that France, unlike England, often preferred still-profitable older methods of production in order to maintain employment and forestall revolution. Horn examines the institutional framework established by Napoleon's most important Minister of the Interior, Jean-Antoine Chaptal. He focuses on textiles, chemicals, and steel, looks at how these new institutions created a new industrial environment. Horn's illuminating comparison of French and British industrialization should stir debate among historians, economists, and political scientists.

Treasures in My Heart: A True WWII Love Story

Product : Treasures in My Heart: A True WWII Love Story
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Paula Freeman was the sweetheart and eventually the wife of Sgt. John Ray, who was a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division. He participated in the invasions of Africa and Italy and then was sent into France on D-Day. The inspiration for this story comes from 333 love letters written to Paula by John from January 1941 through June 6, 1944, when he made his fatal jump into Ste. Mere Eglise, France. Using these letters, along with her thoughts, memories, and a diary, Paula has reconstructed a beautiful love story that stirs up memories of World War II and what it was like to send a loved one off to war. Paula was never told how John died. It wasn't until she read Stephen Ambrose's book, "D-Day June 6, 1944: The Climactic Battle of World War II" that she discovered that her husband was a hero. She learned that John was associated with some of the best trained, most capable, and intelligent men in the world and was defending our country. Paula's goal in writing this book is to tell the world about this brave young man and to give him the honor, respect, and gratitude that is due him.

Free Agency and Competitive Balance in Baseball

Product : Free Agency and Competitive Balance in Baseball
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : As early as the 1880s, baseball owners and sportswriters were decrying the greediness of players as the leading threat to the national pastime. Nearly a century later in 1976, the Player's Association was able to finally tear down baseball's permanent reserve clause?the contract language that essentially bound a player to a single team until he was released or traded?and owners and sportswriters again insisted that the competitive balance of the game was threatened by player greed. The rhetoric from the baseball establishment did not match the on-field reality. From 1981 to 1993, the first significant era of free agency in the sport's history, all 12 of the National League's teams finished first at least once, as did 11 American League teams. From 1994 through 2001, however, there was a pronounced separation in strength between the haves and have-nots, as the local revenue streams of major markets such as New York and Boston overwhelmed the capabilities of small market franchises in such cities as Tampa, Montreal, and Milwaukee. This work examines how the sport has prospered and suffered during the free agency era, based in large part on how the game's various revenue streams are allocated. It further examines the revenue sharing plan in baseball's current collective bargaining agreement, identifying flaws that may well undermine its long-term effectiveness. It also explores how the baseball expertise of some organizations has allowed them to flourish despite the lack of revenue.

Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : First published in London in 1927, The Somme and its companion, The Coward, constitute the only published literary achievements of A. D. Gristwood, a reluctant accountant turned even more reluctant infantryman in the London Rifle Brigade who later fell under the tutelage of master storyteller H. G. Wells.Heavily autobiographical and much influenced by Wells's guidance, Gristwood's tales of World War I combat are rife with acts of unheroic self-preservation and colored with the fear, bitterness, and hopelessness that defined the author's wartime experience. The central characters of these accounts are clever outsiders-disillusioned and grim foot soldiers amid foolishly dutiful comrades-who are placed in dire circumstances where survival mandates acts of horrific selfishness in lieu of valor.

Beyond Nice

Product : Beyond Nice
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Making the Difference is the first book ever to examine the category of gender as it has been and is now understood in the social sciences and its pertinence for religion and theology. One of the most significant phenomena within Western Christianity over the last generation has been the emergence of feminism and feminist theology. They are sparked by such issues as inclusive language, understandings of God, ordination of women, patriarchal patterns reflected in Christian traditions, and the role of women's experience in religion. Yet, in confronting all these concerns, feminist reflections return inexorably to the debate over the meaning and significant of gender, gender difference, and the social construction of gender. Increasing sophistication in theology and ministry on gender questions requires disciplined attention to how gender itself has been analyzed in anthropology, biology, psychoanalysis, and philosophy. Graham's bright and clear work is a detailed and critical inquiry into these disciplines and their profound import for our understanding of human culture and identity, as well as for theology, church policy, and Christian practice.

Small Change: Women, Learning, Patriotism, 1750-1810

Product : Small Change: Women, Learning, Patriotism, 1750-1810
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : During the second half of the eighteenth century, the social role of educated women and the nature of domesticity were the focus of widespread debate in Britain. The emergence of an identifiably feminist voice in that debate is the subject of Harriet Guest's new study, which explores how small changes in the meaning of patriotism and the relations between public and private categories permitted educated British women to imagine themselves as political subjects. "Small Change" considers the celebration of learned women as tokens of national progress in the context of a commercial culture that complicates notions of gender difference. Guest offers a fascinating account of the women of the bluestocking circle, focusing in particular on Elizabeth Carter, hailed as the paradigmatic learned and domestic woman. She discusses the importance of the American war to the changing relation between patriotism and gender in the 1770s and 1780s, and she casts new light on Mary Wollstonecraft's writing of the 1790s, considering it in relation to the anti-feminine discourse of Hannah More, and the utopian feminism of Mary Hays.

Ethics

Product : Ethics
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : This book provides a much-needed, straightforward introduction to moral philosophy. It will particularly benefit students following courses containing an ethics module, including philosophy from AS level onwards, religious studies, law and medicine, but it has also been written for any reader puzzled by moral disputes and dilemmas. Written in an easy and approachable style and packed with lively examples from everyday life, the first section of the book clearly explains and assesses the arguments for and against the rival moral theories of utilitarianism, Kantianism, Divine Command Theory and virtue ethics. The second section develops this by analysing the conflicting advice each moral theory gives regarding four controversial areas of life, namely euthanasia, abortion, animal rights and the environment. The final section concludes with an account of the vital debate concerning whether the difference between right and wrong is an objective fact discovered by us, like gravity, or is instead a human creation and invented by us, like tax laws. Throughout the book moral arguments are broken down into their component parts and explained in clear and simple stages so that readers not previously familiar with philosophical reasoning are aware at all times of where they are in the debate, and where the strengths and weaknesses lie in each position. As such, it is an ideal introduction to critical thinking as well as to moral philosophy.

The Final Frontiers provides you with a practical approach to the changing struggles that confront humanity now and in your future. It reveals through Scriptures and modern-day experiences: * What was lost at the Fall * The elements of nature in God's service * How to defeat the devil at the mind game * Invisible realms of hell * Spiritual weaponry * Peace and the ultimate redemption In writing this book, I feel like the prophet Jeremiah, calling humanity to be alert to the ploy of the enemy, to break the secret bubble, and reveal the shapes of warfare to come. Resurrecting Mingus

Product : Resurrecting Mingus
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : "Resurrecting Mingus" is the story of a young woman lost -- striving to find her own identity while dealing with powerful and painful questions that force her to confront everything and everyone that matters to her. In this stunning debut novel, Jenoyne Adams, a PEN Center USA West Emerging Voices Fellow, displays a rare talent for a first-time author: the skill and courage to write about some of the most controversial issues today in an absorbing and compulsively readable manner. Mingus Browning is a successful, young, beautiful lawyer whose life is falling apart. After a thirty-five-year marriage, Mingus's African-American father has suddenly left her Irish mother for a black woman. A daddy's girl, Mingus is torn between the father she has always been closer to, the mother she may have to defend in divorce proceedings, and a sister hell-bent on winning their lifelong sibling rivalry. Mingus is caught in middle of the three, a woman alone, and, in turn, realizes that she has probably always felt more comfortable that way because she is part of no one group, let alone a united family. Juggling her parents' grief with her own proves to be too much for Mingus as she stumbles from one questionable relationship to another, further complicating her life. After years of isolating herself from those who have tried to care for her, Mingus finally meets someone who rips through her protective defenses and exposes her need to be loved. Eric Simms, a smooth-talking television producer, is through playing dating games and is looking for love for real this time. With Eric, Mingus finally learns to forget the fear of a broken heart and opens herself completely. That is, until word starts circulating that her new love has his secrets as well, and suddenly what was a perfect relationship begins to look like yet another minefield of hurt, as Mingus is forced to choose between her man, her sister, and the truth. After facing a long, sad string of heartaches and betrayals, Mingus finally reaches the point in her life where she realizes who she is, what she wants, and how she doesn't need another man to get it. Marked by raw images and poetic prose, Jenoyne Adams's affecting first novel candidly explores the bonds of family, faith, and finding someone to love when you can't even find someone to trust.

Description : Contains extracts from the Bronte novels, family illustrations and contributions from contemporary writers including Wordsworth and Thackeray. This anthology describes Christmas in the Bronte household under the eyes of the sisters' father and Aunt Bramwell, the glittering social whirl of balls, charades and other festive entertainments in which the Bronte participated at their various teaching posts, and extracts from their novels and poems about Christmas. Alongside Emily Bronte's description of Christmas day at Thrushcrosse Grange in Wuthering Heights; Mrs. Gaskell describes a Haworth Christmas, Thackeray provides a tongue-incheek account of a children's party in London, while William Wordsworth and Tom Twistleton give us Christmas poems. The Changing U.S. Auto Industry: A Geographical Analysis

Product : The Changing U.S. Auto Industry: A Geographical Analysis
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In recent years, automobile production in the United States has undergone changes on a scale unmatched since the pioneering era before World War I. Few plants have been opened in the interior of the country, while most of those located along the east and west coast have been closed. New technology, just-in-time delivery, and more flexible work rules have been introduced, sparked by changing consumer preferences, increasing sales for Japanese products, and declining market shares for American firms. In the fiercely competitive North American market, automakers look for every possible advantage, and they have found that location is a decisive element. "The Changing US Auto Industry" integrates concepts drawn from geography, such as access to markets and shipment of parts, to understand some of the reasons for the recent changes. The changing role of labor in the production process is also crucial, and this includes the search by Japanese firms for a union-free environment, the re-location of some production to Mexico, and the debate over the appropriate level of union-management cooperation. James Rubenstein captures the drama behind the changing distribution in the automobile industry: the Japanese arrival in small-town America and the competition among communities to attract new General Motors plants.

Alexander Calder

Description : This study, now published in paperback, provides the most complete scholarly account yet published of the life and work of Alexander Calder. The son and grandson of acclaimed public sculptors, Calder was trained as an engineer. Working in Europe during the 1920s, he was exposed to a range of avant-garde art, including Cubism, Dada and Surrealism, Constructivism, and works created at the Bauhaus. These sources, together with Calder??'s abiding interest in American folk art, were fundamental to the evolution of his wood and wire sculptures, which fundamentally challenged the principles of Western sculpture established in antiquity. Calder??'s creation of the mobile and stabile, two forms of sculpture that are synonymous with modernism, is also analysed in detail. Including a new plate section and 170 halftones, many published here for the first time, Marter??'s book is an absorbing study of Calder??'s special contribution to twentieth-century art and culture.

Description : Jos phine de Monbart was a disciple of Rousseau and lived in Germany where she befriended Romantic author Jean-Paul Richter and published poetry, a collection of short stories, as well as educational treatises. However, her most famous work is her epistolary novel, Lettres tahitiennes, first published in Berlin in 1784 with subsequent publications in Brussels and Paris. Lettres tahitiennes is directly inspired by French explorer Louis-Antoine de Bougainville's 1771 Voyage autour du monde and its Tahitian chapters. In his travel account, Bougainville recounts the story of Ahuturu, a Tahitian man he agreed to take on board for the long voyage to Europe. Monbart transforms Bougainville's account into a fictional correspondence between Ahuturu - renamed Ze r - and his lover, named Zulica, who stays behind on the island. While Ze r becomes corrupted by the society he encounters in France, Zulica's letters chronicle the abuses suffered by Tahitians at the hands of French and British sailors. She is then sold against her will to an English captain, travels to Europe and is eventually reunited with Ze r. Crazy for the Storm: A Memoir of Survival

Description : From the age of three, Norman Ollestad was thrust into the world of surfing and competitive downhill skiing by the charismatic father he both idolized and resented. These exhilarating tests of skill prepared "Boy Wonder," as his father called him, to become a fearless champion--and ultimately saved his life. Flying to a ski championship ceremony in February 1979, the chartered Cessna carrying Norman and his father crashed into the San Gabriel Mountains. "Dad and I were a team, and he was Superman," Ollestad writes. But now Norman's father was dead, and the devastated eleven-year-old had to descend the treacherous, icy mountain alone. Set amid the spontaneous, uninhibited surf culture of Malibu and Mexico in the late 1970s, this riveting memoir, written in crisp Hemingwayesque prose, recalls Ollestad's childhood and the magnetic man whose determination and love infuriated and inspired him--and also taught him to overcome the indomitable. As it illuminates the complicated bond between an extraordinary father and his son, Ollestad's powerful and unforgettable true story offers remarkable insight for us all.

The Oxford Book of Sonnets

Product : The Oxford Book of Sonnets
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : The sonnet is the best-loved and most versatile of poetic forms, alive and well after over 450 years in English. It is still an automatic choice for the expression of intense but controlled feelings on both private and public subjects. Although it is most often associated with love poems, it is also used for devotional, philosophical, and comic purposes, and this anthology demonstrates the full range of its exhilarating possibilities. Beginning with Wyatt and ending in the present day, The Oxford Book of Sonnets juxtaposes old favourites with the less familiar: Shakespeare's marriage of true minds rubs shoulders with John Davies of Hereford's ABC of love, Keats's stout Cortez with Darley's Manrique. Women poets who revived the sonnet in the late eighteenth century are restored to prominence, and there are examples of the sonnet sequence as well as more unusual experimentation with form such as Sylvester's quadruple acrostic sonnets to his patron and Leigh Hunt's iterating sonnet. Modern poets as diverse as Seamus Heaney, Carol Ann Duffy, and Simon Armitage show that there is no better way to dramatize experience than to write a sonnet.

Family Man: Fatherhood, Housework, and Gender Equity

Product : Family Man: Fatherhood, Housework, and Gender Equity
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : The typical American family has changed dramatically since the days of "Ozzie and Harriet" and "Father Knows Best." Double-income families are now the rule, and fathers are much more involved in raising the children and cleaning house. Reactions to these changes have been diverse, ranging from grave misgivings to a sense of liberation and new possibility. Groups as diverse as Promise Keepers, the Million Man March, and Robert Bly's mythopoetic men's movement tell us that fathers are important. From the fundamentalist right to the feminist left, opinions about the changing nature of the family--and the consequent rethinking of gender roles--have been vehement, if not always very well-founded. In Family Man, sociologist Scott Coltrane brings a wealth of compelling evidence to this debate over the American family. Drawing on his own extensive research and many fascinating interviews, Coltrane explodes many of the common myths about shared parenting, provides first-hand accounts of men's and women's feelings in two-job families, and reveals some innovative solutions that couples have developed to balance job and family commitments. Readers will find an insightful discussion of precisely how and why family life has changed, what forms it may take in the future, and what new kinds of fathers may be on the horizon. The author firmly places these questions within a broad contextual framework. He provides, for instance, an illuminating history of the family that shows that, far from being a fixed structure, the family has always adapted to changing economic, social, and ideological pressures. And by examining how families operate in a variety of non-industrial societies, he demonstrates that our own notions of gender-specific work and parenting roles are culturally rather than biologically determined, and thus inherently flexible. And indeed these roles are changing. While contemporary American women still perform the bulk of domestic tasks, Family Man gives us decisive evidence that men are becoming increasingly involved in both housework and childrearing. Coltrane argues convincingly that this trend will continue. Given the current economic situation--with two-job households now the norm--and the gradual ideological shift away from restrictive gender roles, more and more couples will find it both necessary and desirable to share the workload. More important, Coltrane suggests that as fathers participate more fully in raising their children and performing traditionally female household tasks, men will themselves be transformed by the experience in profoundly positive ways and American society as a whole will move closer to true gender equity. Family Man succeeds brilliantly in bringing clarity, perspective, and above all hope to a discussion that is too often shrill, chaotic, and beset with the rhetoric of nostalgia. It shows us not only exactly where the family is today, but where it has been and what it may become.

AIDS is the second-leading cause of death among African American women between the ages of 18 and 44. African American women constitute 63% of all cases of AIDS among women in the United States. Guided by a feminist perspective and grounded in social construction theory, social work theory, and social work practice, this volume privileges the voice of African American women, the group that is the most disenfranchised-and least accurately represented-in AIDS-related research and writing. The West Indian Americans

Product : The West Indian Americans
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : The West Indian Americans captures the experiences of the diverse groups of immigrants to the United States since 1965. These English-speaking Caribbean immigrants have an increasing presence in this country, particularly in New York City. The differences between the various peoples of African, East Indian, or mixed ancestry, usually unacknowledged, are described here. Henke clearly relates who the groups are-from the Jamaicans to the Garifuna-why they left their homelands, how they have adapted and impacted this country, and the new challenges they face. Many notable West Indian Americans are profiled. The West Indian Americans introduces students and other interested readers to the diversity and cultural individuality of a growing segment of the American immigrant community. After an introductory chapter that describes the history and people of Jamaica and the other English-speaking Caribbean nations, their migration to the United States and patterns of adjustment and adaptation are discussed. Next, the West Indian cultural traditions, transferred to this country especially the churches, literature, music, and festivals, are evoked. Another chapter covers family networks, return migration, and remittances to those members left behind in the West Indies. Final chapters examine the new challenges for the West Indian Americans, such as identity issues, education and job prospects, and gang and drug problems, and the contributions of West Indian immigrants.

Everything You Need to Know about Birding and Backyard Bird Attraction

Product : Everything You Need to Know about Birding and Backyard Bird Attraction
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : With equal measures of wit, scientific wisdom, and homespun common sense, Alan Pistorius makes his lifelong love of birds come alive for anyone who wants to take up birding as a hobby or merely gain more pleasure from the birds around the home, cottage, or camp. With diagrams, illustrations, and full-color photographs throughout, this is a completely revised and updated version of Pistorius's popular Country Journal Book of Birding and Bird Attraction. The author advises readers on how to make their back yards havens for local birds, what constitutes proper food for birds, what to look for in well-designed feeders, how to build appropriate houses, and how to make baths that birds will actually use. Pistorius's style is lighthearted and humorous, and he's never averse to directing a little gentle humor at the foibles of fellow devotees when they begin to take themselves and their hobby too seriously.

The Household Guide to Dying

Product : The Household Guide to Dying
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : A freshly insightful, hopeful, and dramatic novel full of heart and life-told from the perspective of a household advice columnist, wife, and mother who is determined to finish a lifetime's worth of tasks even though she doesn't have a lifetime left to live. " T he Household Guide to Dying" is a moving, witty, and uplifting novel about Delia, who writes an acerbic and wildly popular household advice column. When Delia realizes that she is losing her long battle with cancer, she decides to organize her remaining months-and her husband and children's future lives without her-the same way she has always ordered their household. Unlike the many faithful readers of her advice column-people who are rendered lost and confused when faced with dirty shirt collars-Delia knows just what to do. She will leave a list for her daughter's future wedding; fill the freezer with homemade sausages, stews, and sauces; and even (maddeningly) offer her husband suggestions for a new wife. She'll compile a lifetime's worth of advice for her children, and she'll even write the ultimate "Household Guide to Dying" for her fans. There is one item on her list, however, that proves too much even for "Dear Delia," and it is the single greatest task she had set for herself. Yet just as Delia is coming to terms with this, an unexpected visitor helps her believe in her life's worth in a way that no list ever could. Imbued with Delia's love for food, Jane Austen, clucking hens, and fragrant gardens, and interspersed with her secrets to making a pot of tea, removing wine stains from lace, and the ingredients to the perfect wedding cake, this is a gorgeously crafted novel that captures the reader-heart and mind-and expands our understanding of a meaningful life.

Product : Poison: From Steeltown to the Punjab, the True Story of a Serial Killer
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : From Steeltown to the Punjab. The True Story of a Serial Killer. Teeth and fists clenched, it felt every muscle flexed without pause, as though a bolt of lightning ripped through her spinal chord, igniting every fiber, raping the nervous system. Her back arched, muscles contracting violently, teeth pressed together as though in a vise, freezing her face in a grotesque mask. Risus sardonicus was the Latin name the old forensic pathologists gave it: The sardonic smile. The death grin. Poison begins with a beautiful Indian-Canadian woman collapsing in front of her family at home dying an agonizingly painful death. Police are not called to the scene, and a renowned forensic pathologist is stumped over the cause of Parvesh Dhillon's demise. But soon another gruesome death strikes the Indian community in the city known as "Steeltown" - Hamilton, Ontario. This time it's a young man. Again, the cause is a mystery. The beneficiary of his life insurance policy is a close friend named Sukhwinder Dhillon, a native of the Punjab in India and the same man who received a payout for the death of his wife, Parvesh, . Veteran insurance claims investigator Cliff Elliot is dispatched to interview Dhillon. Elliot has his suspicions and calls Hamilton Police, who assign a charismatic homicide detective to the case, setting in motion an incredible international manhunt to catch a serial killer. Jon Wells, an Award-winning journalist, tells a gripping and exotic true story of multiple murder, exhumation, bigamy, and courtroom twists and turns. It is a story that took Jon into the blazing heart of the Punjab so he could walk in the footsteps of the investigators who sought to bring to justice a black-hearted and cold-blooded predator.

The McNeese State University

Product : The McNeese State University
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Surrounded by live oaks and azaleas, McNeese State University has served Southwest Louisiana for over sixty years. Founded in 1939 by area businessmen and cattlemen, the university has grown and thrived side by side with the city of Lake Charles. Alumni, faculty, staff, and students alike take pride in the heritage of their evolving university, and the city embraces the school as a treasured landmark of the community. McNeese State University began as Lake Charles Junior College, a division of Louisiana State University. Just one year after its inception, the name was changed to John McNeese Junior College in honor of one of the area's foremost pioneer educators. In 1950 the name was changed to McNeese State College when four-year status was obtained, and university status was achieved in 1970. The campus has enjoyed phenomenal expansion, from its initial three buildings constructed on the site of the town's Poor Farm to the vibrant and sprawling 68 buildings and over 500 acres it consists of today. Scenes of student life--in classrooms, dormitories, club meetings, and at athletic events--as well as memorable events throughout the course of the school's history are the focus of this visual journey. Students are pictured during lighter moments, enjoying the camaraderie of their classmates, but their serious side is also displayed during such trials as the disastrous hurricane that forced over 1,000 refugees to shelter on campus and the period during World War II when the campus became the headquarters of the Louisiana Maneuvers. Notable alumni of McNeese State include Dr. Cecil Cyrus Vaughn, a pioneer in cardiovascular medicine and artificial transplant surgery; Sheryl L. Abshire, one of the first five inductees into the National Teacher Hall of Fame and a Christa McAuliffe Fellow; and Andre Dubus, a critically acclaimed writer.

White Heat: The Extreme Skiing Life

Product : White Heat: The Extreme Skiing Life
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : "White Heat" is pure adrenaline -- a thrilling exploration of extreme skiing that pushes the reader over the edge with heart-pounding accounts of people who risk their lives on the fastest, steepest slopes. Often obsessed and possibly crazy, extreme skiers and snowboarders are having the time of their lives facing death-defying challenges. But the extreme skiing life isn't just about the quest to finish first; it's a lifestyle made up of insane jumps, bone-breaking speeds, and world records -- not to mention the wild off-mountain social world, the flamboyant gear and slang completely unique to it, and, of course, the remarkable history of the racing champions and events that is its backdrop. Wayne Johnson, former competitive skier and acclaimed novelist, takes us into the cult of extreme skiing populated by stars such as one-eyed jumping champion Jerry Martin, who held the North American distance record for more than a decade, and Vinko Bogataj, whose world-famous wipeout on ABC's Wide World of Sports gave rise to the expression "pulling a Vinko." Here are real-life adventures, everything from Shane McConkey ski BASE jumping the Eiger in Switzerland to Shawn White, the Flying Tomato, throwing 1260s in the halfpipe. Johnson, who has spent a lifetime on the mountains, also puts you in his boots when recounting goose-bump- inducing tales of high-speed downhill racing, Nordic jumping competitions, avalanche control, and the hip, ripping world of snowboarding. If you've ever wondered what kind of nut would willingly choose to fly off a twenty-story ski jump, or have ever dreamed of living outside the usual boundaries, or just like to read about people having life-expanding adventures, then "White Heat" is an exhilarating thrill ride that will leave you breathless.

Handbook of Middle English

Product : Handbook of Middle English
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Professor Fernand Moss of the Collge de France is at home in all the Germanic languages and literatures, but for many years he has paid particular attention to English. Since he is a medievalist he has interested himself first and foremost in the earlier periods, and since he is a teacher as well as investigator he has been long concerned to smooth the path of students taking their first steps into a field far from our day and time. A few years ago, this concern of his ripened into a work that won general recognition as soon as it came out: his Manuel de l'Anglais du Moyen Age des Origines an XIVe Sicle. In the Manuel the author's mastery of the material and talent for clear and orderly presentation are happily combined. In this work we have by far the best introduction to medieval English now available. -- from the Foreword

Neptune's Gift: A History of Common Salt

Product : Neptune's Gift: A History of Common Salt
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Common salt--a substance seemingly too ordinary to think about, yet it is the oldest of our raw materials and the basis of some of our newest inventions. Mythology and folklore abound in stories and proverbs about salt. It has been a source of revenue to governments from ancient China to ancien regime France to the United States. The search for this commodity ushered in the age of petroleum fuels. In the first comprehensive history of salt, Robert P. Multhauf deals with its production, uses, and role in the development of modern society. Today, only about two percent of the salt produced is for human and animal consumption. Ten times as much is used in the winter salting of roads, and about half of today's enormous production is used in the chemical industries, for the production, among other things, of herbicides, pesticides, and other environment-threatening materials.

Studying Families

Product : Studying Families
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : "This volume provides valuable guidelines and information to the family studies research. Each chapter contains thought provoking exercises and a reference list. Anyone considering a family study needs to read this volume before beginning. While no single volume can provide a complete roadmap, this text provides a good outline and points out major roadblocks. However, one should not get the idea this volume is for the researcher only. Anyone who works in the family therapy arena will benefit from the insights provided, especially as they read the literature to keep current." --Evaluation Practice "Studying Families is a very practical, down-to-earth book about how to study families from a psychological perspective. . . . The authors present insightful discussions of research issues involved when studying multiple members of the same family and when the objective is to measure properties of the family as a group. There is a well-balanced presentation of the advantages, disadvantages, and techniques of using observations and self-reports to collect data from family members. . . . We recommend Studying Families as a useful supplemental text for psychologists who need to teach about or research the family." --Contemporary Psychology "I assigned Studying Families as a text for a graduate class in Family Research Methods. My students and I gave the book rave reviews; it was extremely readable, concise, and thorough. It introduced us to a state-of-the-art thinking in family research. It often helped us to clarify confusing concepts we were struggling with from other family readings. This book should be extremely helpful to anyone engaged in the process of thinking about family researchmethods." --Leslie Brody, Boston University "In Studying Families, Anne Copeland and Kathleen White present a concise, well-written, and extremely interesting discussion of several distinct issues related to family research. Their appraoch is rather characteristic, in that rather than reviewing basic social science research methodology, they have chosen to outline very succinctly the unique (and often problematic) aspects of methodology relevant to the study of families. . . . Each chapter concludes with a set of challenging exercises and a list of suggested readings. This book, along with the supplementary readings, would be excellent in a course on family research methods, in which students had already completed a basic social science research methods course. It also will make a valuable addition to every family researcher's collection of resource materials." --The Journal of Marriage and the Family By exploring the special issues and problems related to research on families, Copeland and White show the reader how the techniques needed to study families differ from the standard methods used to study individuals. In addition to covering such techniques as self- report and observational methods, the book includes suggestions for the

Judging in Black and White: Decision Making in the South African Appellate Division, 1950-1990

Product : Judging in Black and White: Decision Making in the South African Appellate Division, 1950-1990
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Despite the increasing recognition of judges as political actors, few studies have empirically explored the role and function of courts in repressive regimes. Based on individual case studies as well as empirical analyses of all the reported decisions of the highest appellate court in South Africa, "Judging in Black and White: Decision Making in the South African Appellate Division, 1950-1990 creates a portrait of the individuals who staffed the bench during the rise and fall of apartheid. This book explores the dilemma of judging in a system that juxtaposes a formal law and the repressive law. Regardless of their adherence to a formal-law approach to judging, the adjudicative function cannot be fully separated from the larger moral questions embedded in these systems. This text evaluates the response of judges to this dilemma through institutional individual and longitudinal analyses of judicial decision making.

Editors Make War: Southern Newspapers in the Secession Crisis

Product : Editors Make War: Southern Newspapers in the Secession Crisis
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In early 1860 most Southern newspapers promoted Unionist sentiments for peace, but by 1861 they advocated secession and disunion, often calling for bloodshed. Using the editorials published in 196 newspapers during that pivotal year before the outbreak of the Civil War, Donald E. Reynolds shows the evolution of the editors' viewpoints and explains how editors helped influence the traditionally conservative and nationalistic South to revolt and secede. """" "Editors Make War" is the first complete study of how Southern newspapers influenced the secession crisis in 1860, effectively outlining how editors played on their readers' racial fears and distrust of the North. Showing how newspaper coverage can affect its readers, this classic study illuminates such events as the nominating conventions, fires in Texas that were blamed on slaves and abolitionists, state elections in the North, Lincoln's presidential victory, failed attempts at compromise, the secession of the lower Southern states, the attack at Fort Sumter, and the Federal call for troops in April 1861.
