Mexico's Pivotal Democratic Election: Candidates, Voters, and the Presidential Campaign of 2000

Product : Mexico's Pivotal Democratic Election: Candidates, Voters, and the Presidential Campaign of 2000
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : The 2000 Mexican presidential race culminated in the election of opposition candidate Vicente Fox and the end of seven decades of one-party rule. This book, which traces changes in public opinion and voter preferences over the course of the race, represents the most comprehensive treatment of campaigning and voting behavior in an emerging democracy. It challenges the "modest effects" paradigm of national election campaigns that has dominated scholarly research in the field. Chapters cover authoritarian mobilization of voters, turnout patterns, electoral cleavages, party strategies, television news coverage, candidate debates, negative campaigning, strategic voting, issue-based voting, and the role of the 2000 election in Mexico's political transition. Theoretically-oriented introductory and concluding chapters situate Mexico's 2000 election in the larger context of Mexican politics and of cross-national research on campaigns. Collectively, these contributions provide crucial insights into Mexico's new politics, with important implications for elections in other countries.

On the Land: Confronting the Challenges to Aboriginal Self-Determination

Product : On the Land: Confronting the Challenges to Aboriginal Self-Determination
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : It is from the land that the Native peoples of Canada draw their strength. If the people of Quebec claim a right to sovereignty, Inuit of Quebec argue their right of self-determination empowers them with the choice to remain part of Quebec, of Canada or to secede on their own. The James Bay Cree consider Hydro Quebec's "mad plans to engineer and dam the vast ecosystem" where they have lived for centuries an affront to their own right to control their land. The Labrador Innu are struggling with both the federal and provincial governments to protect their traditional hunting territories from threats imposed by military training flights and mineral exploration. All of these are challenges. As the Native peoples of Canada are meeting them, asserting their right to make choices for themselves, they stand steadfastly "on the land" from which flow their inherent rights to self-determination. "We are not willing to be bystanders and spectators. We are not willing to have our political status once again determined by others." -- Zebedee Nungak, President of Makivik, representing Inuit of Northern Quebec "Great Whale is only a symptom. The attempted dispossession of my people, and the purported extinguishment of our rights, is the cause." -- Matthew Coon Come, Grand Chief of the Grand Council of the Cree "The real solution to the problems that face the Innu people is recognition by Canada and Newfoundland of our rights, rights to our land and our way of life. We can not and will not settle for anything less." -- Daniel Ashini, Director of Innu Rights and Environment for the Innu Nation

John Keese, Wit and Litterateur: A Biographical Memoir

Product : John Keese, Wit and Litterateur: A Biographical Memoir
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : JOHN KEESE, A BIOGRAPHICAL MEMOIR. -- 1883. -- PREFACE. - NORE than a quarter of a century has passed since the death of the subject of the following pages and few, if any, of those who were his intimates in other days are now living. ITet lively traditions of him re- main among the book-selling fraternity, and it has been a matter of regret with many that his name does not appear in any American biographical dic- tionary. In August, 1877, the late Evert A. Duyckinck con- tributed to the Alagazine of American History an appreciative and entertaining paper entitled Keese am-being his recollections of my father-in which he feelingly said that Keese should not pass out of memory with the recollections of his ninny friends of the present fleeting generation. This paper was sup- plemented in the same year by a brief sketch by the present writer, in the same periodical and in ISSO the late Henry Alorford wrote and published, in the magazine bearing his name, a sketch of greater length entitled 41 John Keese his Intimates, etc. TIlese vari- ous writings were, naturally, all more or less of a frag- mentary chancter, and did not pretend to an estended treatment of their subject. The present composition is prepared with material gnthered from many sources, and is designed to form a suitable biographical memoir. Surely a innn whose lifes aim was the diffusion of knowledge whose name was identified with many important literary undertak- ings and whose fame as an auctioneer was bcyontl doubt unique--deserves a record more enduring than memory. APRIL 1883. JOHN KEESE, the subject of the present memoir, was born in the city of New York, November 24, 1805, and was the second son of JVilliam Keese andRebecca Linn. His father was a lawyer of reputation, and his license of admission to the bar now lying before me bears the signature of James Kent. His mother was a daughter of the Rev. William Linn, D. D., a native of Pennsylvania, one of the most elo- quent divines of his time, first Chaplain of the House of Representatives of the United States, under the . Constitution of 1787, and celebrated as a pulpit orator in New York during the last decade of the last century. Mr. Ieese had reason to be proud of his grand- fathers. John Keese, the father of William Keese, was also by profession a lawyer became assistant deputy quartermaster-general on Washingtons staff, and was one of the original members of the Society of the Cincinnati. The Rev. JVilliam Linn enjoyed the high honor of being chosen to deliver before the Society of the Cincinnati the oration on the death of General Washington, the effort, as it is recorded, placing him notably beyond his pulpit compeers of that day. I view it in the light of a striking coincidence that one grandfather should have been a listener to an oration pronounced by the other before the renowned society on so solemn and impressive an occasion and I am slqe .that the gyanclson ever proudly cherished such holidred amelthl mories. .The b

Canadian Policy on Nuclear Cooperation with India: Confronting New Dilemmas

Product : Canadian Policy on Nuclear Cooperation with India: Confronting New Dilemmas
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In July 2005, the United States and India announced a bold agreement to restore nuclear co-operation. The deal, nearing finalization in late 2007, has been vigorously critiqued by arms control advocates anticipating dire consequences for the non-proliferation regime. For Canada, the implications of re-opening nuclear cooperation with India are particularly complex, rekindling historical animosities and challenging Canada's longstanding commitment to global nuclear disarmament. Canada, as a party to the Nuclear Suppliers Group, has a voice in the ultimate disposition of the agreement. What are Canada's choices? What should be its goals and policies? This volume presents the analyses and conclusions of a select group of scholars and governmental policy-makers who work extensively with these issues, gathered for a workshop in Ottawa on 19-20 March 2007 convened by the Simons Centre of the University of British Columbia. Available November 2007 through major booksellers in Canada & the US.

Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : The extraordinary story of a sister who believes and a sister who rebels, set inside the most insular Hasidic sect, the Satmar. Spanning four generations, from pre-World War II Transylvania, to 1960s Paris, to contemporary New York, Markovits' masterful novel shows what happens when unwavering love and unyielding law clash--a rabbi will save himself while his followers perish; a Gentile maid will be commanded to give up the boy she rescued because he is not of her faith; two devoted sisters will be forced apart when one begins to question their religion's ancient doctrine. One sister embraces and finds comfort in the constraints of the world she's always known, while the other knows she will suffocate in a life without intellectual freedom. Separated by the rules of their community, the two sisters are brought together again when a family secret threatens to make pariahs of them all. Dark, powerful, and utterly compelling, I Am Forbidden""takes us deep inside the minds of those who leave their restrictive environments, and deep into the souls of those who struggle to stay.

Our Friend Joe: The Joe Fortes Story

Product : Our Friend Joe: The Joe Fortes Story
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : When a young black man named Seraphim Joe Fortes arrived in Vancouver in 1885, with little to his name, no one could possibly have suspected that one hundred years later he would be voted Citizen of the Century. "Our Friend Joe" is the first biography of the West Indian sailor who became a local legend, saving lives and teaching three generations of Vancouver children how to swim. Joe 's rise to fame began in Liverpool, when a midnight race across the Mersey River with fellow members of the Secret Daredevil Club established his reputation as a swimmer of extraordinary talent. In the years ahead, he would sail around Cape Horn, shine shoes, tend bars, and rescue a mother and child from the Great Vancouver Fire. On a chance rowboat ride, he would find his perfect place in English Bay, where the untold story truly begins to evolve. In 1900, after years of volunteering, Joe was officially hired by the City of Vancouver as lifeguard, swimming instructor and special constable of English Bay beach. Colourful, often poignant details chronicle Joe 's many adventures both on and off shore, along with his deeply personal relationship with the people of Vancouver. On February 7, 1922, after decades of Joe 's exemplary service, thousands of mourners lined Vancouver streets to bid farewell to their friend Joe. His legacy continues today, with one of Vancouver 's libraries named after him. Part of the proceeds from this biography are being donated to the Lifesaving Society/Soci t de Sauvetage du Canada.

The Stone Girl

Product : The Stone Girl

Description : "She feels like a creature out of a fairy tale; a girl who discovers that her bones are really made out of stone, that her skin is really as thin as glass, that her hair is brittle as straw, that her tears have dried up so that she cries only salt. Maybe that's why it doesn't hurt when she presses hard enough to begin bleeding: it doesn't hurt, because she's not real anymore." High school senior Sarah Beth (Sethie) Weiss is disciplined. She has never cut a class in her life, has never had a grade below a B+, and has always been a favorite among her teachers. Her college applications are finished and she only ate six Ritz crackers today. But even on days when Sethie needs to eat more, there's always the toilet to make up for her mistakes. Sethie manages to get down to 104, and maybe if she works just a little bit harder, becomes a little more disciplined, she can get below 100. Truth be told, Sethie has more to worry about than her relationship with her body; but the deeper she descends into her disorder, the smaller her world gets and the harder it is to see her way out.

Atlantis: City in the Sky

Product : Atlantis: City in the Sky
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : None of the tales I've seen or read seem to fit properly with the original legends of Atlantis. None, that is, until I learned of the Aullagas flood. Over three thousand years ago, a city called Aullagas was destroyed by a great inland tsunami. Was it the place described by Plato and the Incan Legend of the Desaguadero? The idea captured my imagination and I am in hopes that my readers will catch the vision as well. My recipe for an intriguing story includes a sprinkle of scientific fact and documented stories of local tragedy and odd events. Two young boys actually discovered an immense Inca treasure buried in a Bolivian cave. Why did the villagers dynamite and seal the entrance? A 'witching light' fell from the sky into an Andean lake. Did the natives actually eat the alien survivors? Modern science is on the verge of discovering the key to reversing mitochondrial degeneration. Is the fountain of youth actually in a test tube only a few years away? The Discovery Channel actually sent a film crew to the Bolivian altiplano. Did they document the ancient site of Atlantis? ----- In my story, NASA satellites discover an ancient civilization on the Bolivian altiplano that is an exact match for Plato's lost city as well as the Incan 'Legend of The Desaguadero'. In a race against time, present day criminals, archaeologists and a pharmaceutical magnate sleuth the actions of its ancient inhabitants in an attempt to uncover two great mysteries; either of which could alter modern civilization as we know it. Attention focuses upon a city located in the Bolivian desert at an altitude of 11,000 feet, which was destroyed by earthquake and flood in a single day, and upon a mysterious artifact hidden in the mists of the Andes Mountains.

Teaching Reading: Effective Schools, Accomplished Teachers

Product : Teaching Reading: Effective Schools, Accomplished Teachers
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : This unique book tells the story of a select group of schools and teachers who have managed to beat the odds in terms of improving elementary students reading achievement. Originating with the CIERA "School Change Project" directed by Barbara Taylor and David Pearson, it was subsequently expanded to include the work of other research teams doing similar work. It combines large scale studies of effective schools and teachers (Part I) with case studies of individual schools and teachers who have successfully transformed research findings into situation-specific strategies appropriate to their schools and classrooms (Parts II and III). The book's distinct contribution is showing that no matter how consistent the research findings on effective school and classroom practice, groups of teachers must improvise their own situation-specific programs and practices. In short, they must be able to create variations on a common theme. Key features of this outstanding new volume include: *Integration of research and cases--One cannot fully understand research-based general principles without knowing how they play themselves out in specific settings. Similarly, one cannot fully understand cases without seeing the commonalities across different schools and classrooms sharing similar goals. This book provides both perspectives. *Diverse cases--The schools and classrooms depicted in this book are urban, rural, and suburban; poor and middle class; and English-only and bilingual. Rather than telling readers how to beat the odds, it provides them with a wide variety of cases from which they can extrapolate to build their own customized teaching programs and practices. *Summarizing section--The final section contains a summary of research on effective schools and teachers and a concluding chapter by Gerry Duffy and Jim Hoffman in which they reflect on the book's content and possible directions for future research. The book is targeted to both in-service elementary teachers and literacy students in advanced college courses.

Irrational Markets and the Illusion of Prosperity

Product : Irrational Markets and the Illusion of Prosperity
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : "Irrational exuberance" -- the now-famous utterance of Alan Greenspan, referred to the seemingly unending upward spiral of the stock market. Of course, as every investor knows, the stock market plummeted after this comment was made, only to recover and exceed every known record over the next year. Nothing, it appears, could keep this market down: not inflation worries, concerns over the Asian economic crisis, lack of earnings in many companies, nor elevated stock prices. Nothing, it seems, could stop investors in their passion for bidding up prices of stocks, especially technology and telecommunications. But beware: Irrational Exuberance warns that Americans are living in an economic dreamland, and that the long bull market and low unemployment have made us immune to economic reality -- in short, we're in for a rude awakening. Based on extensive research, this provocative book is sobering reading for any current or would-be investor.

Globalization, Foreign Direct Investment and Technology Transfers: Impacts on and Prospects for Developing Countries

Product : Globalization, Foreign Direct Investment and Technology Transfers: Impacts on and Prospects for Developing Countries
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In this book, Nagesh Kumar and expert contributors examine and explain the emerging patterns in international technology transfers and foreign direct investment flows (FDIs) over the past two decades. They analyse the trends in internationalization of corporate activity in individual source countries, discussing outflows from both major and emerging source countries. This departs from the existing treatments of FDI as homogenous resource and allows for a more detailed prediction of future outflow patterns. Throughout, the research focuses upon the implications of new trends for developing countries. Kumar concludes by outlining the policy implications for the governments of such countries seeking to mobilize technology and FDI for their industrialization and further integration into the international community. Controversially, he cautions against excessive optimism about the potential of FDI inflows as an agent of development. This book draws together much data and information which is not readily available and provides reflections upon international business negotiations from a developing country's perspective.

Finding Oliver

Description : He had had thoughts of getting close to Sadie from the very first day he'd seen her. And now, with it possibly happening, how could he say or do anything that might possibly ruin his chances? As he sat up Sadie took a sponge and started to scrub his back, neck, and shoulders. She worked around to the front and washed under his arms and on the front of his chest. As she did so she said, "You know, Tad, I am not so much older than you. I have just led a harder life and grew up a little faster than you have. I was forced to take care of myself at a rather early age. I had to leave home because my step-father was taking advantage of me, and I couldn't stay and let that happen. My mother was a drunk and wouldn't admit to herself that her husband was a bastard. It's hard for a girl to make it on her own. I fell into the only thing I could do to make a living." "It's okay Sadie, I know deep down you are a good person. I only wish you didn't have to do what you do with other men." "Yeah well, don't you judge me for what I do. You don't understand what I've been through that's all." "I'm sorry, Sadie I didn't mean to sound like I was judging you. I guess I'm just a little jealous of the other men, that's all." "Jealous, what do you have to be jealous about? We aren't tied to one another. I'm just offering you a bath that's all. Besides, I couldn't stand the smell of you any longer." As she said this, she let a smile develop on her lips and looked at him softly and said, "Were you really jealous of those other men I was with?" "I must have been, I couldn't help but think about you, and I wanted it to be me you were with." "Well I'm with you now, so shut up and let me wash your hair." She poured some shampoo into her hands and started to rub his scalp and hair. Once she was done, she said, "Now put your head back so I can rinse your hair with some warm water." When satisfied with getting his hair and head rinsed, she stood up and said, "Now wash the rest of you, and when you're done, take this towel and dry off. You can pull the plug and let the tub drain. I'll be waiting for you in the other room. Come out when you're ready. Tad could hardly wait to finish up and get rinsed and dried off. He tried not to make too big a mess in the tub and floor, taking his time to dry enough to step out of the tub so he wouldn't get water all over. Once done he wrapped the towel around his waist and stepped out into the bedroom. She was standing on the opposite side of the bed and said for him to turn around and sit on the edge of the bed. Tad did as he was told and waited for her to make the next move. As he sat there, he could see her coming around the end of the bed to stand in front of him. She then said in a soft voice, "Now, you're going to find out what it is like to be with a woman." He could hardly control himself but did his best to remain calm and relaxed. He

Innocents

Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : "It is impossible to resist this novel's wit, grace, and charm." --Lauren Groff, author of The Monsters of Templeton and Arcadia A smart and slyly funny tale of love, temptation, confusion, and commitment; a triumphant and beautifully executed recasting of Edith Wharton's The Age of Innocence. Newly engaged and unthinkingly self-satisfied, twenty-eight-year-old Adam Newman is the prize catch of Temple Fortune, a small, tight-knit Jewish suburb of London. He has been dating Rachel Gilbert since they were both sixteen and now, to the relief and happiness of the entire Gilbert family, they are finally to marry. To Adam, Rachel embodies the highest values of Temple Fortune; she is innocent, conventional, and entirely secure in her community--a place in which everyone still knows the whereabouts of their nursery school classmates. Marrying Rachel will cement Adam's role in a warm, inclusive family he loves. But as the vast machinery of the wedding gathers momentum, Adam feels the first faint touches of claustrophobia, and when Rachel's younger cousin Ellie Schneider moves home from New York, she unsettles Adam more than he'd care to admit. Ellie--beautiful, vulnerable, and fiercely independent--offers a liberation that he hadn't known existed: a freedom from the loving interference and frustrating parochialism of North West London. Adam finds himself questioning everything, suddenly torn between security and exhilaration, tradition and independence. What might he be missing by staying close to home? Francesca Segal was born in London and studied at Oxford and Harvard University before becoming a journalist and critic. Her work has appeared in Granta, The Guardian, and The Observer, among other publications. For three years she wrote the Debut Fiction column in The Observer and was, until recently, a features writer at Tatler. She lives in London. "Inspired by The Age of Innocence, Segal's book is warmer, funnier, and paints a more dynamic and human portrait of a functional community that is a wonderful juxtaposition to Wharton's cold social strata." --Publishers Weekly, starred review "Francesca Segal's lustrous debut may have begun as a seed shaken from Edith Wharton's masterpiece The Age of Innocence, but only a few pages will show how completely Segal has made The Innocents her own. The setting--a vibrant if enclosed London Jewish community--is beautifully counterbalanced by Segal's wry and compassionate voice." --Lauren Groff, bestselling author of The Monsters of Templeton and Arcadia "The Innocents is written with wisdom and deliciously subtle wit, in the tradition of Jane Austen and Nancy Mitford. . . . This is a wonderfully readable novel: elegant, accomplished, and romantic." --Andre Aciman, author of the award-winning Out of Egypt, Call Me by Your Name, and Alibis "A moving, funny, richly drawn story. . . . Full of real pleasures and unexpected wisdom, this book sweeps you along.

The Zebedee Boy

Product : The Zebedee Boy
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : "The Zebedee Boy" is a fictional memoir of 'the beloved disciple." John Zebedee, fisherman of Galilee and follower of Jesus of Nazareth, writes 12 years after the crucifixion, preserving his memories for the early Church. In his collection of personal anecdotes and character portraits, he sets out to explain what the new word 'Christian" means. Recalling the time when he was the youngest of the Twelve and known simply as 'the Zebedee Boy," John draws on his intimacy with Jesus to paint a living picture of him and speaks authoritatively of his relationships with Mary, the Baptist, Peter, Judas Iscariot and Mary Magdalene. Here, too, are definitive explanations for the fateful decisions made by high priest Caiaphas, Herod Antipas and Pontius Pilate. From the Baptism of Jesus to the Day of Pentecost, the Evangelist reveals his understanding of the spiritual events that are the basis of Christian belief and practice, leading to the inevitable conclusion that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and Saviour of mankind. On every page John takes us to the heart of his faith. His testimony, a celebration of the Christian concept of Love, will have a cross-denominational and inter-faith appeal.

The Global Spread of Arms: Political Economy of International Security

Product : The Global Spread of Arms: Political Economy of International Security
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Today, despite the end of the cold war, more countries have more sophisticated weapons from more numerous suppliers than ever before. This is partly a product of continuing and growing conflicts--especially regional and interethnic ones--but it also reflects the political and economic difficulties of weaning public and private enterprise away from powerful and highly lucrative defense manufacturing and sales. In this compact yet comprehensive volume, Frederic Pearson surveys the broad terrain covered by the concept of "the security dilemma" and points out landmarks along the route proceeding from proliferation to economic interests, to potential "conversion," to the future of defense production and marketing. Along the way we experience the lure of arms sales expositions and fairs and the quandary of deciding whether to arm victims of aggression. The author meticulously describes and documents the twin motives of "welfare and security" in the arms market: who buys weapons, who sells them, where they are produced, and how they are--and are not--used. Through a combination of data, anecdotes, illustrations, and narration accompanied by special feature boxes, we see how arms races have mounted historically and how they might be defused in this, the gathering post-Cold War order. From spears and axes to the radar-eluding stealth aircraft, "The Global Spread of Arms" charts the history of the arms dilemma and brings us up-to-date on myths and recent trends in weapons development internationally. Touching on issues ranging from multinational arms manufacturers to black and gray market consumers, from arms verification to arms autonomy, and from peace dividends to "peace through strength,"Pearson presents a balanced view of the policy debate about defense economies, collective security, and how to manage them.Governments of developed and developing countries alike talk about arms control but often fail to act in curtailing arms trade and transfers. Nowhere is the paradox of the "sovereign right to arm" more apparent than in current hot spots detailed by Pearson, including the Balkans, the former Soviet Union, Iraq, North Korea, and South Asia. We see an array of arms trends played out to devastating effect: sanctions, embargoes, multilateral trade and negotiations, smuggling, "arms balancing," and, ultimately, proliferation and escalation cycles. Potential escape routes from weapons dilemmas also are offered in a full review of arms transfer controls.Students of international relations and international political economy, from peace studies to security studies, will join industry and government professionals as well as general readers in finding this primer indispensable to understanding the past and future global arsenal.

These terrorists select targets based upon the greatest impact upon the rest of us. A well-organized terrorist organization has found the method of bringing the world to its economic knees: denying the industrial world of its most needed commodity-oil. This denial is accomplished by selection of three vital choke points and destroying them. It is of paramount importance that the United States government takes swift and decisive action to restore the flow of oil and eliminate the terrorist element. Global Financial Turmoil and Reform: A United Nations Perspective

Product : Global Financial Turmoil and Reform: A United Nations Perspective
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : As Asia's financial and economic crisis deepened and spread around the world, United Nations economists on five continents shared notes to understand the upheaval and suggest reforms at national and international levels. This process led the Secretary-General to present a set of recommendations to the General Assembly on methods to strengthen the capacity of developing and transitional economies to cope with international financial volatility and to reduce risks posed by the current international financial system. It also resulted in a joint statement by UN economic and social affairs officials to the ministerial committees that oversee the Bretton Woods institutions. This volume presents the results of these exercises, including revised and updated papers and summaries of July 1998 discussions at which economists and scholars discussed the crisis in terms of the behavior of direct investors and financial markets. In the rapidly changing discussions of financial policy reform, ideas formerly outside of mainstream theory have gained a wider hearing. This dynamic dialogue is reflected in this book.

Glengarry

Product : Glengarry
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Composed in three sections, "Glengarry" is a return in writing to the landscape of rob mclennan's youth and a headlong rush into the fractures, slippages and buried surfaces of what the text leaves undisclosed to him. In "glengarry: open field (a postscripted journal)" the poet discovers that "the earth remembers every scratch & scar & step ever took, if you know where to look, how to ask in the way of assembling," and to ask those questions of the emotional and physical landscapes of one's youth is to discover that "history is written by everything that history forgets"; is "to half-open a story of what no longer exists"; to beg the question, "is this memory or romanticism"; to run the risk of becoming lost in the very attempt to reconstruct the elements of our past: "there is always the fear here of looking more back than ahead." What mclennan finds on this quest is nothing more than "a portable violence of heritage & secrets." What he discovers here, however, is that "we all live in -imagined boundaries," and that "if the story exists, i am living the -language of it." The short reprise to his memory poem, "whiskey jack," leads -mclennan to ask: "what am I filled with, this quiet / conspiratorial talk, this body / of open wilderness, painted trees / & a history that functions / without markers / save seasons." Finally, in "avalanche," the answer to mclennan's rhetorical -question, "where are you, heart?" appears in both its lyric and its epic voices: "the names of all my broken hearts are only names again" and "there is eventually a silence / there is history." Amidst this "aesthetic of wonderful destruction" each new poem is "an illusion against destructive slide," because "what else is human hope but momentarily borne."

You Are a Leader: A Journey Towards Enlightened Leadership

Description : In "You are a Leader: A Journey Towards Enlightened Leadership," author Joe Bandra gives tangible weight to ten intangible qualities present in every leader. More importantly, Bandra points out that these same intangibles are in each one of us. It is simply our choice to use them to be the leader we want to be for the betterment of ourselves and our world. Through historical and practical examples Bandra points out that everyone has the same chance to become a leader. The only thing keeping us from becoming the best leader we can be is, in reality, not believing that we can be one. By focusing on what truly matters, we can all learn to become the kind of leaders we wish we could be. Bandra shows us how to focus on our emotions, passions, trust, and flexibility (among other traits) as we move into new leadership roles. Above all, Bandra points out that to some degree leadership is an attainable goal for everyone. All we need to do is pay attention to those few key intangibl

Casseomae is content to live alone, apart from the other bears in her tribe, until one of the ancients' sky vehicles crashes to the ground, and from it emerges a Skinless One, a child. Rather than turn him over to the wolves, Casseomae chooses to protect this human cub, to find someplace safe for him to live. But where among the animals will a human child be safe? And is Casseomae threatening the safety of the Forest and all its tribes by protecting him? Middle-grade fans of postapocalyptic fiction are in for a treat with this fanciful and engaging animal story by the author of the Clockwork Dark trilogy. "From the Hardcover edition."

International Politics in Europe

Product : International Politics in Europe
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : "International Politics in Europe" examines the broad field of European politics in the period following the end of the Cold War. The contributors argue that the collapse of the two superpower blocs which dominated the continent has brought an end to the old preoccupation with military security. Current analyses of Europe demand an approach to the continent as an interdependent whole rather than as divided by East and West. The book focuses on the links between four issues: economic development, security, the environment, and human rights. Although these issues existed during the Cold War, they were subordinated to the ideological division of the continent. Now they have emerged as decisive issues for the way Europe will develop. The contributors examine the system, state and individual levels of analysis on which these problems exist. Contributors: Adrian Hyde-Price, David Sadler, David Armstrong, Stuart Croft, Colin McInnes, R. J. Barry Jones, Joanna Spear, and Nicholas Wheeler.

Women and AIDS

Product : Women and AIDS
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : For many women, the advice "Use a condom " is not enough to help protect them from HIV infection. As Women and AIDS reveals, "negotiating" safer sex practices is a very complex issue for women who are involved in relationships where they do not enjoy physical, social, or economic equality. The book's authors maintain that the key to curbing the spread of HIV and to caring for those already infected--is communication. Women and AIDS is the first volume to address HIV/AIDS and women from a communication perspective. This helpful guidebook addresses how women might achieve safer sexual and drug injection practices with partners, but it also explores women's negotiation of the health care system as patients, medical research subjects, and caregivers. It challenges traditional assumptions about the relationship between care providers and patients and the meaning of patient compliance and raises important questions about gender, race, and class that are exacerbated by the epidemic. Designed to ground interventions in the realities of women's lives, Women and AIDS discusses what women can do to get around communication and health care obstacles. To this end, you will learn about: using the media for HIV-related social action and to promote women's views of HIV and sexuality prison health care for HIV-positive women cultural constructions of sex and drug sharing in a variety of communities long-term changes that will empower women delivering an HIV-positive diagnosis to patients gender roles and caregiving the language we use to talk about "Third World" women and "Asian AIDS" women AIDS filmmakers/videographersFor the benefit of AIDS activists, health care providers, and counselors, Women and AIDS discusses women and their communication and awareness from virtually every angle. This book analyzes situations where communication breaks down--from the woman who can't openly discuss safe sex with her partner, to the drunk college student who "hooks up," to the doctor who gives an HIV-positive diagnosis without compassion--and offers communication solutions. This will help women avoid such risks, establish communication and safety in their lives, and construct meaningful roles in relationship to HIV/AIDS.

Milton Studies 36

Product : Milton Studies 36
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : The ten essays in this volume are among the most insightful studies of Milton's writings, both poetry and prose. Two essays engage the topic of silence, first in Comus, then in Paradise Regained, thereby interrelating two works often perceived as diverse. Silence gives way to the sounds of music in another essay, which examines the cultural contexts of seventeenth-century England, is a frame of reference for understanding Milton's attack on polyphony in Paradise Lost. Other essays on Milton's epic study the theological and liturgical implications of transubstantiation: Christianity's Jewish legacy, with particular reference to theodicy; and Carlotta Petrina's illustrations of Eve's so-called "metaphysical tears", that dramatize the impact of guilt, grief, and expiation on human nature.

Culture, Development, and Public Administration in Africa

Product : Culture, Development, and Public Administration in Africa
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : * The first text that integrates a cultural context into the study of public administration programs* Covers the whole of southern Africa: South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe* Written jointly by an African professor of public administration and an American political scientistDespite extensive theoretical consideration over the past several decades, the discipline of public administration still suffers from an inability to meet on-the-ground administrative challenges in developing countries. In the past, public administrators have relied upon Western organizational models considered rational and efficient. But in neglecting various social and cultural aspects of any non-Western country, development proceeds in fits and starts.Using southern African nations as an example, the authors argue that emerging societies are poor today thanks to the overreliance on non-local models. Practitioners must consider local cultures--languages, symbols, customs, and rituals--in developing effective administrative practices. They must absorb the experiences of people who know first-hand the dynamics and conditions in these countries. Otherwise, neither citizens nor leaders will manage their affairs and development processes effectively.Written particularly for undergraduate and graduate students in public administration, political science, and comparative and development public administration, but also for policymakers, managers, administrators, and individuals who seek to understand the challenges of organizing and managing development, this book helps foster a culturally sensitive understanding of public administration in a global context.

Leadership Selection in Six Western Democracies

Product : Leadership Selection in Six Western Democracies
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : A comparative survey which discusses how national leaders in six Western democracies, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Great Britain, and the United States, are nominated for the highest office in their country. The combinations of methods each country utilizes to nominate their leaders are described. The text emphasizes that most national leaders have served a long apprenticeship in various public offices--sometimes having made several attempts--before actually being nominated to the nation's highest public office. Increasingly, the text shows that opinion polls, television, and professional campaign management are playing a greater role in the leadership selection process in all six countries. This book will be of interest to upper-level college and graduate students and faculty in comparative government, political parties, and public affairs and academic as well as public libraries.

Jewish-German Identity in the Orientalist Literature of Else Lasker-Schuler, Friedrich Wolf, and Franz Werfel

Product : Jewish-German Identity in the Orientalist Literature of Else Lasker-Schuler, Friedrich Wolf, and Franz Werfel
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : This pioneering volume is the first to examine the phenomenon of Jewish-German orientalist literature. For many Jewish-German authors of the twentieth-century, the Orient represented an imaginative space where they could analyse their position as Jews in German society, and come to terms with a divided identity. Here, representations of Muslims and Islamicate cultures in the works of popular and respected authors who were nevertheless often seen as Jewish, Oriental 'others' by the German-speaking societies in which they lived are explored. Lasker-SchAAA1/2ler's Die NAAA1/2chte Tino von Bagdads (1907) and Der Prinz von Theben (1912) create a timeless Orient filled with visionary artists like herself, while Wolf's Mohammed: Ein Oratorium (1922) depicts the Orient as the birthplace of the message of justice espoused by Islam: through it Wolf reaches a new understanding of his position as a progressive Jew in a war-torn German society. In Werfel's Die vierzig Tage des Musa Dagh (1933), the author uses the conflict between Turks and Armenians to explore his own religiosity.

Inventing Being Kitalalt Let

Product : Inventing Being Kitalalt Let
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : (IN)VENTING BEING... "This volume is by far Mozsi's best. He goes beyond the cerebral by penetrating the instinctual that lurks in the rarified spaces of sound and sense. The best poems, it is said, are untranslatable. So it is with these poems of love and passion. Time and time again I had to abandon the task of the translator and join the author as poet recreating with him. What I've tried to do is to avoid a banal mirror translation and offer instead what I perceived as the essence of the poetic effect. The poems are never static; they are a kinetic river of relentless images where the best a translator can do is to catch a fleeting glance. One thing is for certain: the poems are much better in their original Hungarian where they are not only a river of re-invented language but an eddy of diction that revels in de(i)fying the dictionary." Peter Hargitai The Landon Translation Award Academy of American Poets "What invariably runs through Ferenc Mozsi's "Inventing Being" is language so inventive, so startling that it acts like a shot of adrenalin energizing these poems of love to a level of originality seldom, if ever, seen in English." David Miller Author of "Death of Shelly and Other Poems" "In this collection of poems Mozsi snatches special moments and makes them into monuments, rediscovering the existing beauty in ourselves and in the world around us." Jozsef Garai Former Editor "Hungarian Word," New York, NY "Cover design by Dianne Marlene Hargitai Illustrations by Laszlo Morvay"

Sustaining the Earth: The Story of the Environmental Movement--Its Past Efforts and Future Challenges

Product : Sustaining the Earth: The Story of the Environmental Movement--Its Past Efforts and Future Challenges
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Environmental issues, once the benign hobby of the few, have become everybody's urgent concern--progressing from the peaceful vibes of the first Earth Day to the political tumult of the "green possibility." As we surpass the end of the twentieth century and as these issues become more pressing, John Young's "tour de force" is an especially welcome and timely assessment of the history of the environmental movement--and a call to arms for a new and effective attack on the problems. Young maintains that only a powerful synthesis of political, economic, and moral ideologies--a unification he terms "postenvironmentalism"--will move world societies into a relation to the environment that maintains the best democratic values. He describes many of the movements and strategies that have appeared over the last three decades: realos, reds, greens, left and right ecologists, eco-feminists, humanists, and pragmatists. Now even the most radical environmentalists must recognize the reality of questions about equity and poverty, technology and energy, aid and trade between wealthy and impoverished countries, and the validity of the ways people consider them. As the process of trial and error this book describes continues, Young offers--in a thoughtful and undogmatic manner--an alternative perspective that is essential reading for all who care about our world.
