Political Economy and Global Capitalism: The 21st Century, Present and Future

Product : Political Economy and Global Capitalism: The 21st Century, Present and Future
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : This volume brings together original and timely writings by internationally renowned scholars that reflect on the current trajectories of global capitalism and, in the light of these, consider likely, possible or desirable futures. Essays focus to varying degrees on developing distinctive theoretical frameworks and using them to clarify both the history of the present political economy and how progressive political economic trends might be extended from the present into the future. A distinctive feature of the collection is its effort to develop new mediations between theory and history, a deeply problematic relationship in the social sciences. These contributions offer original perspectives both to theory construction and to the use of theory in historical analysis. In short, this volume provides theory-informed writing that contextualizes empirical research on current world-historic events and trends with an eye towards realizing a future of human, social and economic betterment.

Repositioning the Missionary: Rewriting the Histories of Colonialism, Native Catholicism, and Indigeneity in Guam

Product : Repositioning the Missionary: Rewriting the Histories of Colonialism, Native Catholicism, and Indigeneity in Guam
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In the vein of an emergent Native Pacific brand of cultural studies, Repositioning the Missionary critically examines the cultural and political stakes of the historic and present-day movement to canonize Blessed Diego Luis de San Vitores (1627-1672), the Spanish Jesuit missionary who was martyred by Mata'pang of Guam while establishing the Catholic mission among the Chamorros in the Mariana Islands. The work juxtaposes official, popular, and critical perspectives of the movement to complicate prevailing ideas about colonialism, historiography, and indigenous culture and identity in the Pacific. The book is divided into three sections. The first, "From Above, Working the Native," focuses exclusively on the narratological reconsolidation of official Roman Catholic Church viewpoints as staked in the historic (seventeenth century) and contemporary (twentieth century) movements to canonize San Vitores, including the symbolic costs of these viewpoints for Native Chamorro cultural and political possibilities not in line with Church views. Section two, "From Below: Working the Saint," shifts attention and perspective to local, competing forms of Chamorro piety. In their effort to canonize San Vitores, Natives also rework the saint to negotiate new cultural and social canons for themselves and in ways that produce new meanings for their island. "From Behind: Transgressive Histories" shifts from official and lay Roman and Chamorro Catholic viewpoints to the author's own critical project of rendering alternative portrayals of San Vitores and Mata'pang. Theoretically innovative and provocative, humorous, and inspired, Repositioning the Missionary melds poststructuralist, feminist, Native studies, and cultural studies analytic and political frameworks with an intensely personal voice to model a new critical interdisciplinary approach to the study of indigenous culture and history.

La Damnation de Faust, Op. 24 - Study Score

Product : La Damnation de Faust, Op. 24 - Study Score
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Berlioz composed his tremendous "Legende dramatique" in 1845-46, largely creating his own libretto after Gerard de Nerval's French translation of the famous Faust story by Goethe. The composer produced the dramatic oratorio at his own expense for the premiere on December 6, 1846 at Paris' Opera-Comique. Despite critical acclaim, the performance was not well-attended - a major financial setback for the composer. This new study score is a digitally-enhanced reprint of the score issued in 1901 by Breitkopf & Hartel as part of the projected Berlioz Complete Works, edited by Charles Malherbe and Felix Weingartner.

Interdiction in Southern Laos, 1960-1968

Product : Interdiction in Southern Laos, 1960-1968
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Throughout the War in Southeast Asia, Communist forces from North Vietnam infiltrated the isolated, neutral state of Laos. Men and supplies crossed the mountain passes and travelled along an intricate web of roads and jungle paths known as the Ho Chi Minh Trail to the Viet Cong insurgents in South Vietnam. American involvement in Laos began with photo-reconnaissance missions and, as the war in Vietnam intensified, expanded to a series of air-ground operations from bases in Vietnam and Thailand against fixed targets and infiltration routes in southern Laos. U.S. Air Force leaders and aircrews flying interdiction missions over Laotian territory faced a unique set of challenges. Their efforts were plagued by political controversies, daunting weather, rugged terrain, a tenacious foe, and above all a bewildering array of rules of engagement limiting the effectiveness of air operations. Interdiction in Southern Laos, 1960-1968 examines this complex operational environment. Many of these issues-particularly those relevant to conducting a politically sensitive, limited war from foreign bases, with a commitment to minimizing civilian casualties-are still relevant today and for the foreseeable future as the modern Air Force meets its responsibilities in an ever-changing global environment. Economic Basis of Politics (Ppr)

Product : Economic Basis of Politics (Ppr)
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Economic interpretations of history are irrevocably identifi ed with the name of Charles A. Beard. This is mainly due to his early book An Economic Interpretation of the Constitution of the United States (1913). Yet, in Beard's later work, The Economic Basis of Politics (1922), he articulates the main principles of his method and argues for its applicability to the understanding of current events. In this brief survey of Western political philosophy and contemporary constitutional arrangements, Beard concludes that it is well established doctrine that "there is a vital relation between the forms of a state and the distribution of property, revolutions in the state being usually the results of contests over property."

Playing the Past: History and Nostalgia in Video Games

Product : Playing the Past: History and Nostalgia in Video Games
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : "Playing the Past" brings together a group of interdisciplinary scholars to examine the complementary notions of history and nostalgia as they are expressed through video games and in gaming culture. The scope of these related concepts moves from the personal to the cultural, and essays in this collection address video game nostalgia as both an individual and societal phenomenon, connecting the fond memories many of us have of classic gaming to contemporary representations of historical periods and events in video games. From Ms. Pac-Man and Space Invaders to Call of Duty and JFK: Reloaded, the games many of us have played since childhood inform how we see the world today, and the games we make and play today help us communicate ideas about real world history. By focusing on specific games, historical periods and media ecologies, these essays collectively take an in depth look at the related topics of nostalgia for classic gaming, gaming and histories of other media, and representations of real history in video games.

Covering Disaster: Lessons from Media Coverage of Katrina and Rita

Product : Covering Disaster: Lessons from Media Coverage of Katrina and Rita
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In 2005, journalists faced enormous challenges while covering hurricanes Katrina and Rita along America's Gulf Coast. They struggled to find ways to communicate, move from one place to another, and find reputable information. They witnessed complete chaos, observed human suffering, and were outraged with delayed or ineffective rescue mechanisms. Not only did journalists face these normal problems of crises, since many themselves were among the victims, they were forced to do their jobs under circumstances that seemed impossible. The contributors to Covering Disaster study personal and professional coping mechanisms and lessons that may be learned from media disaster coverage. During Katrina and Rita, journalists responded largely by redefining traditional ideals of fairness, balance, and objectivity and by adopting an emotionally driven and somewhat more subjective reporting style. In this way, they rediscovered and emphasized journalistic purposes and techniques that have long been the hallmarks of greatness. Their work during those months of destruction and pain was applauded by their readers and viewers because it was useful, critical of officials who were not doing their jobs, sought support for those who were suffering, and took a position of public leadership. Now that the winds have died down, flood waters have receded, and rebuilding has begun, the brand of public-oriented journalism found in the midst of the storms must not be forgotten.

Making Knowledge in Early Modern Europe: Practices, Objects, and Texts, 1400-1800

Product : Making Knowledge in Early Modern Europe: Practices, Objects, and Texts, 1400-1800
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : The fruits of knowledge--such as books, data, and ideas--tend to generate far more attention than the ways in which knowledge is produced and acquired. Correcting this imbalance, "Making Knowledge in Early Modern Europe" brings together a wide-ranging yet tightly integrated series of essays that explore how knowledge was obtained and demonstrated in Europe during an intellectually explosive four centuries, when standard methods of inquiry took shape across several fields of intellectual pursuit. Composed by scholars in disciplines ranging from the history of science to art history to religious studies, the pieces collected here look at the production and consumption of knowledge as a social process within many different communities. They focus, in particular, on how the methods employed by scientists and intellectuals came to interact with the practices of craftspeople and practitioners to create new ways of knowing. Examining the role of texts, reading habits, painting methods, and countless other forms of knowledge making, this volume brilliantly illuminates the myriad ways these processes affected and were affected by the period's monumental shifts in culture and learning.

Description : Frank Hurley is best known today as a photographer and film maker. His major documentary films include 'The Home of the Blizzard', 'In the Grip of the Polar Pack Ice', 'Sir Ross Smith's Flight' and 'Pearls and Savages', while his photographs of Douglas Mawson's Australasian Antarctic Expedition, Ernest Shackelton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition and the two World Wars have been so widely exhibited and reproduced that in many cases they are the principal means by which we have come to see those world-historical events. Yet there is another source, so far little known to the public, which also gives us a startling sense of the presence of the past: it is Hurley's voluminous manuscript diaries, only brief extracts from which have so far been published. Originally written in the field in Antarctica, South Georgia, England, France, the Middle East, Papua and Australia, and later raided and revised for his many publications and stage performances, they have survived years of world travel and are now carefully preserved in the archives of the National Library of Australia in Canberra and the Mitchell Library in Sydney. This illustrated edition of his diaries presents Frank Hurley in his own words, explores his testimony to these significant events, and reviews the part he played in imagining them for an international public.

Description : This is the sixth of seven volumes of "Experimental Notes" made by Michael Faraday during the years 1820-1862; bequeathed by him to the Royal Institution of Great Britain and known today as "Faraday's Diary"; now republished for the first time since the original printing in 1936 by exclusive arrangement with the Royal Institution; includes the complete 1st edition manuscript edited by Thomas Martin with index, photographs and thousands of illustrations in Faraday s own hand. "Faraday is generally held to be one of the greatest of all experimental philosophers. Nearly every science is in his debt: and some sciences owe their existence mainly to his work. The liquefaction of gases, benzene, electro-magnetic induction, specific inductive capacity, lines of force, magnetic conduction or permeability, the dark discharge, anode, cathode, magneto-optics, electro-chemical equivalent; all these terms suggest fundamental researches which he made, and many of them were called into existence in order to describe his discoveries." American Musicians II: Seventy-One Portraits in Jazz

Product : American Musicians II: Seventy-One Portraits in Jazz
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : This is Whitney Balliett's long-awaited "big book." In it are all the jazz profiles he has written for "The New Yorker" during the past 24 years. These include his famous early portraits of Pee Wee Russell, Red Allen, Earl Hines, and Mary Lou Williams, done when these giants were in full flower; his recent reconstructions of the lives of such legends as Art Tatum, Coleman Hawkins, Jack Teagarden, Zoot Sims, and Dave Tough; His quick but indelible glimpses into the daily (or nocturnal) lives of Duke Ellington and Charles Mingus; and his vivid pictures of such on-the-scene masters as Red Norvo, Ornette Coleman, Buddy Rich, Elvin Jones, Art Farmer, Michael Moore, and Tommy Flanagan. Also included are such lesser known but invaluable players as Art Hodes, Jabbo Smith, Joe Wilder, Warne Marsh, Gene Bertoncini, Joe Bushkin, and Marie Marcus. All these profiles make the reader feel, as one observer has pointed out, that he is "sitting with Balliett and his subject and listening in." The book can be taken as a kind of history of jazz, as well as a biographical encylopedia of many of its most important performers. It can also be regarded as a model of American prose. Robert Dawidoff said of Whitney Balliett"s most recent book, "Jelly Roll, Jabbo and Fats," that "few people write as well about anything as Balliett writes about jazz." And the late Philip Larkin wrote in 1982 of the "transcendence of Balliett's prose."

Wall Street Stock Selector: A Review of the Stock Market with Rules and Methods for Selecting Stocks

Product : Wall Street Stock Selector: A Review of the Stock Market with Rules and Methods for Selecting Stocks
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : The aim and object of every trader who enters Wall Street is to make money, yet it is a well-known fact that a large percentage of traders lose money. There are many reasons for their losses. One of the most important is that they do not know how to select the right stocks to buy and sell at the right time. I expect to give rules provable and practical which will help traders to study and learn how to select the proper stocks to buy and sell with a minimum of risk. The main object of this book is to bring TRUTH OF THE STOCK TAPE up to date and give the investor and trader the benefit of seven more years of my experience, which has been valuable to me, and if the reader will profit by my experience, it will prove valuable to him. In this life we must have some definite aim or hope to attain happiness. Money will not bring all of it. Neither can we always help others with money. The best way that I know of to help others is to show them how to help themselves. Therefore, knowledge and understanding properly imparted to others is the greatest good that we can do for them and at the same time do good for ourselves. Thousands of people have written me that I have helped them through TRUTH OF THE STOCK TAPE. I believe the WALL STREET STOCK SELECTOR will give you more knowledge, will bring you more happiness through money gained, than any other book. If it does, I will be well repaid for my labor. - W. D. The Literature Police: Apartheid Censorship and Its Cultural Consequences

Product : The Literature Police: Apartheid Censorship and Its Cultural Consequences
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : 'Censorship may have to do with literature', Nadine Gordimer once said, 'but literature has nothing whatever to do with censorship.' As the history of many repressive regimes shows, this vital borderline has seldom been so clearly demarcated. Just how murky it can sometimes be is compellingly exemplified in the case of apartheid South Africa. For reasons that were neither obvious nor historically inevitable, the apartheid censors were not only the agents of the white minority government's repressive anxieties about the medium of print. They were also officially-certified guardians of the literary. This book is centrally about the often unpredictable cultural consequences of this paradoxical situation. Peter D. McDonald brings to light a wealth of new evidence - from the once secret archives of the censorship bureaucracy, from the records of resistance publishers and writers' groups both in the country and abroad - and uses extensive oral testimony. He tells the strangely tangled stories of censorship and literature in apartheid South Africa and, in the process, uncovers an extraordinarily complex web of cultural connections linking Europe and Africa, East and West. The Literature Police affords a unique perspective on one of the most anachronistic, exploitative, and racist modern states of the post-war era, and on some of the many forms of cultural resistance it inspired. It also raises urgent questions about how we understand the category of the literary in today's globalized, intercultural world.

The Sustainment Battle Staff & Military Decision Making Process (Mdmp) Guide: For Brigade Support Battalions, Sustainment Brigades

Product : The Sustainment Battle Staff & Military Decision Making Process (Mdmp) Guide: For Brigade Support Battalions, Sustainment Brigades
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Since 2004, the US Army has started a revolution of reorganization and doctrine development throughout its Combat, Combat Support and especially Combat Service Support "logistics" organizations, known as "Transformation." In the logistics or "Sustainment" arena, the Army's concept towards supporting other units has changed from the old "out-stockpile" the enemy concept towards a system used by modern civilian distributors - "Just-In-Time" sustainment, leaving planning and synchronizing throughput of commodities and support to the customer with little margin of error. To successfully accomplish this, Sustainment planners must thoroughly understand the Military Decision Making Process or "MDMP" for short. Conducting a Sustainment oriented MDMP is essential in integrating the Sustainment War Fighting Functional Area into the unit's plan and for ensuring a synchronized and supportable course of action. Successful integration is a result of having the right personnel, available tools, correct MDMP methodology, and synchronized timeline throughout the process. If this guide can assist logistics' planners in accomplishing this process, then it has accomplished its intent and mission.

Dostoevsky the Thinker

Product : Dostoevsky the Thinker
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : For all his distance from formal philosophy, Fyodor Dostoevsky was one of the most philosophical of writers. In works from fictional masterpieces to little-known nonfiction prose, he grappled with the ultimate questions about the nature of humankind. His novels are peopled by characters who dramatize the fierce debates that preoccupied the Russian intelligentsia during the second half of the nineteenth century. What was the philosophy of Dostoevsky? How does reading this literary giant from a new perspective add to our understanding of him and of Russian culture? In this remarkable book, a leading authority on Russian thought presents the first comprehensive account of Dostoevsky's philosophical outlook. Drawing on the writer's novels and, more so than other scholars, on his essays, letters, and notebooks, James P. Scanlan examines Dostoevsky's beliefs. The nonfiction pieces make possible new interpretations of some of the author's most controversial works of fiction, including Notes from Underground. Dostoevsky's thought, Scanlan explains, was shaped above all by its anthropocentrism, its struggle to define the essence of humanity. All of the subjects the writer addressed-including religion, ethics, aesthetics, history, the state, and the Russian nation-provided clues to the mystery of what it means to be human. Scanlan demonstrates conclusively that Dostoevsky's philosophical views were more solidly grounded and systematic than have been imagined and cannot be dismissed as the notions of an irrationalist. Scanlan also discusses the flaws and weaknesses in Dostoevsky's thought, in particular his controversial notion that Russia is the one "God-bearing" nation. This belief-that Russia has a messianic role to play in world history-has gained renewed popularity among its citizens, for whom Dostoevsky has long been regarded as a thinker of supreme importance.

The Tragedy and Comedy of Life: Plato's Philebus

Product : The Tragedy and Comedy of Life: Plato's Philebus
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In "The Tragedy and Comedy of Life, " Seth Benardete focuses on the idea of the good in what is widely regarded as one of Plato's most challenging and complex dialogues, the "Philebus." Traditionally the "Philebus" is interpreted as affirming the doctrine that the good resides in thought and mind rather than in pleasure or the body. Benardete challenges this view, arguing that Socrates vindicates the life of the mind over the life of pleasure not by separating the two and advocating a strict asceticism, but by mixing pleasure and pain with mind in such a way that the philosophic life emerges as the only possible human life. Benardete combines a probing and challenging commentary that subtly mirrors and illuminates the complexities of this dialogue with the finest English translation of the "Philebus" yet available. The result is a work that will be of great value to classicists, philosophers, and political theorists alike.

Popular Culture and the Shaping of Holocaust Memory in America

Product : Popular Culture and the Shaping of Holocaust Memory in America
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : The Holocaust took place far from the United States and involved few Americans, yet rather than receding, this event has assumed a greater significance in the American consciousness with the passage of time. As a window into the process whereby the Holocaust has been appropriated in American culture, Hollywood movies are particularly luminous. "Popular Culture and the Shaping of Holocaust Memory in America" examines reactions to three films: "Judgment at Nuremberg" (1961), "The Pawnbroker" (1965), and "Schindler's List" (1992), and considers what those reactions reveal about the place of the Holocaust in the American mind, and how those films have shaped the popular perception of the Holocaust. It also considers the difference in the reception of the two earlier films when they first appeared in the 1960s and retrospective evaluations of them from closer to our own times. Alan Mintz also addresses the question of how Americans will shape the memory of the Holocaust in the future, concluding with observations on the possibilities and limitations of what is emerging as the major resource for the shaping of Holocaust memory--videotaped survivor testimony. "Popular Culture and the Shaping of Holocaust Memory in America" examines some of the influences behind the broad and deep changes in American consciousness and the social forces that permitted the Holocaust to move from the margins to the center of American discourse. "Mintz's insights give pause for thought on matters of great interest to educators, parents, and the Jewish community as a whole, in addition to scholars in a range of fields, including literary studies, American studies, film studies, and popular culture as well as Holocaust studies."--Naomi Sokoloff, University of Washington "The questions and issues Mintz raises throughout his book take the study of these texts to a sophisticated yet sensible new level. Mintz challenges the assumption that there are automatic lessons to be learned from such memory, or that there can be any redemption in such memory. These are crucial insights which deserve the widest possible audience."--James E. Young, University of Massachusetts at Amherst (author of "The Texture of Memory and At Memory's Edge.")

The Family Tree

Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Katherine looks down at the book as she lightly runs her fingers over the cover. She can feel the raised insignia of the oak tree with mistletoe in the branches. The title is elegantly written with beautiful penmanship which spells out "The Family Tree." She timidly opens the book and looks down at the familiar pages in front of her. Tears begin to form in her eyes as she subconsciously rubs her stomach.Katherine thumbs through the pages. She had always been taught that through her past her future was determined. But, she did not like what her future was to bring. Why were her ancestors allowed to decide the fate of her unborn twins? Why couldn't she have a choice? Didn't they know what the consequences were? Or were they so blind to the religion, they didn't see it for what it really was?Again, Katherine thinks about the title of the book. Her Family Tree certainly had deep, dark roots. Many branches filled the tree but all were tied to one dark secret.Katherine realizes she is the one that must cut this tree down. But, how and at what cost? She feels a kick from one of the twins and this gives her hope. The key had to be the religion. What its origins were, why it was created and how to destroy it. The religion was so old and forgotten that only through tradition had it survived. Katherine thinks to herself, maybe this generation needed to start a tradition of their own.

Description : African-American Slave Medicine offers a critical examination of how African-American slaves medical needs were addressed during the years before and surrounding the Civil War. Drawing upon ex-slave interviews conducted during the 1930s and 1940s by the Works Project Administration (WPA), Dr. Herbert C. Covey inventories many of the herbal, plant, and non-plant remedies used by African-American folk practitioners during slavery. He demonstrates how active the slaves were in their own medical care and the important role faith played in the healing process. This book links each referenced plant or herb to modern scientific evidence to determine its actual worth and effects on the patients. Through his study, Dr. Covey unravels many of the complex social relationships found between the African-American slaves, Whites, folk practitioners, and patients. African-American Slave Medicine is a compelling and captivating read that will appeal to scholars of African-American history and those interested in folk medicine.

Ignatius of Antioch: A Martyr Bishop and the Origin of Episcopacy

Product : Ignatius of Antioch: A Martyr Bishop and the Origin of Episcopacy
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Ignatius of Antioch (died c. 115) is one of the Apostolic Fathers of the Christian Church. In his letters to other churches he re-interpreted church order, the Eucharist and martyrdom against the backcloth of the Second Sophistic in Asia minor by using the cultural material of a pagan society. He so formed the idea and theology of the office of a bishop in the Christian church. This book is an account of the circumstances and the cultural context in which Ignatius constructed what became the historic church order of Christendom. Allen Brent defends the authenticity of the Ignatian letters by showing how the circumstances of Ignatius' condemnation at Antioch and departure for Rome fits well with what we can reconstruct of the internal situation in the Church of Antioch in Syria at the end of the first century. Ignatius is presented as a controversial figure arising in the context of a church at war with itself. Ignatius constructs out of the conflicting models of church order available to him one founded on a single bishop that he commends to Christian communities through which he passes in chains as a condemned martyr prisoner.

How to Photograph the Moon and Planets with Your Digital Camera

Product : How to Photograph the Moon and Planets with Your Digital Camera
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Although astronomical CCD cameras can be very costly, digital cameras - the kind you use on holiday - on the other hand, are relatively inexpensive. Moreover, their technology - especially thermal noise, sensitivity (ISO number) and resolution - has progressed to a point where such cameras are more than capable of photographing the brighter astronomical objects. Now Tony Buick has teamed up with fellow author and astro imager Phil Pugh, to produce a completely revised, updated, and extended second edition to How to Photograph the Moon and Planets with your Digital Camera, first published in 2006. The revisions take into account changing (and improving) camera technology, and some items which are now available commercially but which previously had to be home-made. The section of solar observing has been expanded to include observing by H-alpha light, and among the many additional sections are photographing the constellations, aurorae, and basic post-imaging processing.

Description : It's often been said that a bad day of fishing beats the best day at work. But what happens when fishing is your work? In "A Hard Way to Make an Easy Living, " author and career fisherman Corky Decker recaps his lifelong fishing adventures. From his start as a young boy intrigued by the sea working for tips on party sport fishing boats out of Ogunquit, Maine, to captaining a multimillion-dollar factory trawler that fished Alaskan waters, his stories of successes and failures provide an insider's look at the lives of men and women who go to sea to fish. The story demonstrates why commercial fishing is not just a job, but a way of life. In this memoir, Decker tells of trawling and harpooning bluefin tuna on the East Coast until the lure of Alaska found him walking the docks of Kodiak in 1985; he recounts his experiences of the fisheries he worked in Alaska. "A Hard Way to Make an Easy Living" underscores the continual controversy between the fishing industry and fisheries management and the influence of foreigners in US waters.

Life Behind a Veil: Blacks in Louisville, Kentucky, 1865-1930

Product : Life Behind a Veil: Blacks in Louisville, Kentucky, 1865-1930
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In the period between the Civil War and the Great Depression, Louisville, Kentucky, was host to what George C. Wright calls "a polite form of racism." There wre no lynchings or race riots, and to a great extent, Louisville blacks escaped the harsh violence that was a fact of life for blacks in the Deep South. Furthermore, black Louisvillians consistently enjoyed and exercised an oft-contested but never effectively retracted enfranchisement. However, their votes usually did not amount to any real political leverage, and there were no radical improvements in civil rights during this period. Instead, there existed a delicate balance between relative privilege and enforced passivity. In Life Behind a Veil, George Wright looks at the particulars of this form of racism. He also looks at the ways in which blacks made the most of their less than ideal position, focusing on the institutions that were central to their lives. Blacks in Louisville boasted the first library for blacks in the United States, as well as black-owned banks, hospitals, churches, settlement houses, and social clubs. These supported and reinforced a sense of community, self-esteem, and pride that was often undermined by the white world. Life Behind a Veil is a comprehensive account of race relations, black response to white discrimination, and the black community behind the walls of segregation in this border town. The title echoes Blyden Jackson's recollection of his childhood in Louisville, where blacks were always aware that there were two very distinct Louisvilles, one of which they were excluded from.

New Families, No Families?: The Transformation of the American Home

Product : New Families, No Families?: The Transformation of the American Home
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Is the American family a thing of the past? Almost anyone can tell a story that illustrates how dramatically things have changed in the past decades. Nonmarriage, childlessness and divorce are commonplace. Most children leave their parents' home and live for increasing periods before marriage as independent adults. But there are also signs of strengths. Some parents play more equal roles, both financially and in coping with household tasks. In this revealing new study, Frances Goldscheider and Linda Waite discuss cogently the question of whether we are headed for no families, or new families. Adults across the nation who reached "thirtysomething" in the early 1980s are the primary focus of the book, although broader patterns of social change are seen in the influence of their parents' experiences on them and in their own children's experiences of family life. The authors begin with their subjects as very young adults, examining their plans for work and family and their attitudes toward women's work and family roles. As these young men and women move farther into adulthood, we learn what influences their chances of marriage, their patterns of family building (and dissolving), and the division of labor in the families they form. In each case the authors focus on the effects of exposure to different family structures in childhood and young adulthood. The authors find, surprisingly, that the real threats to the family are in the home itself: the new option of "a home of one's own" in a variety of circumstances outside of marriage, most men's noninvolvement in the home and its tasks, and the fact that knowledge of and respect for basic skills involved in making a home are not being taught to today's sons and daughters.

Paradoxes of Paradise: Identity and Difference in the Song of Songs, Second Edition

Product : Paradoxes of Paradise: Identity and Difference in the Song of Songs, Second Edition
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Rabbi Akiba is famously reported to have said, 'Heaven forbid that any one in Israel ever disputed that the Song of Songs is holy, for the whole world is not worth the day on which the Song of Songs was given to Israel, for all the writings are holy, but the Song of Songs is the Holy of Holies'. This book is an extended elaboration of Rabbi Akiba's statement. It argues that the Song is a Hellenistic composition, drawing on the resources of ancient Near Eastern erotic poetry and characterized by a complex though fragile unity.Through the metaphors, the lovers progressively see themselves reflected in each other, as well as in the world about them and the poetry of love. The poem celebrates the land of Israel in spring, an ideal humanity, and a perfected language. It culminates in the contestation of love and death, and the assertion that only love survives the exigencies of time. The pervasive ambiguity of the Song, in which one never quite knows what happens, is related to the ambivalence of beauty, which is closely related to ugliness. Hence the surrealist imagery of the Song verges upon the grotesque and stretches the resources of our imagination. Through a detailed comparison with the Garden of Eden story, Landy argues that the Song is a vision of paradise seen from the outside, through the ironic poetic gaze, in a world potentially hostile or indifferent.

Earthly Visions: Theology and the Challenges of Art

Product : Earthly Visions: Theology and the Challenges of Art
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : This stimulating book argues that great art can function as a "secular parable"--that is, like the parables of Jesus, art can lead viewers to reflect on the reality and presence of God in the world. T. J. Gorringe examines representative secular paintings of the most significant types (mythological themes, genre painting, portraiture, landscape, still life, abstract art), showing how each type can point toward God, whether by envisaging an alternative future, creating aesthetic delight, or teaching us to see things differently. His provocative study challenges the notion that art since the 15th century has become increasingly secularized. Gorringe gives careful consideration to each work's historical background and artistic context, as well as to art historical and critical appraisals. With an ecumenical approach, he then provides an insightful argument for how each piece can be read theologically. Although readers may sometimes disagree with his theological stance or his interpretation of specific works, his engaging commentary provokes reflection and challenges deeper questioning and awareness.

Mercury, Mining, and Empire: The Human and Ecological Cost of Colonial Silver Mining in the Andes

Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : On the basis of an examination of the colonial mercury and silver production processes and related labor systems, Mercury, Mining, and Empire explores the effects of mercury pollution in colonial Huancavelica, Peru, and PotosA-, in present-day Bolivia. The book presents a multifaceted and interwoven tale of what colonial exploitation of indigenous peoples and resources left in its wake. It is a socio-ecological history which explores the toxic interrelationships between mercury and silver production, urban environments, and the people who lived and worked in them. Nicholas A. Robins tells the story of how native peoples in the region were conscripted into the noxious ranks of foot soldiers of proto-globalism, and how their fate, and that of their communities, was -- and still is -- chained to it.

Callsign: Spectre

Description : "Callsign: Spectre" is the true story of a young man from a small town in Pennsylvania who grows up and enlists in the United States Air Force at nineteen. Nearly forty years after the fact, Jeff Noecker recounts his combat flight experiences from the Vietnam War flying in an AC-130 Spectre gunship. The story follows him from his initial air force training to being accepted into an unusual Special Operations unit. What sets this story apart from the others that have been written about Vietnam is the Spectre gunship that Noecker flew in on his missions. While the US Air Force was flying hundreds of F-4s, F-105s, B-52s, OV-10s, O-2s, A-7s in Vietnam and Southeast Asia, there were only fourteen AC-130A Spectre gunships in theater and only one squadron that flew them-Noecker's squadron. There were even fewer than fourteen when the program began in 1968; the first few flew out of a base in Vietnam. The stories contained here resemble a diary, presenting both personal anecdotes of Noecker's and of stories he heard over the course of his time in service. Some of these may seem a bit farfetched, but Noecker sticks to the facts as much as possible. Unbelievable as some of the stories sound, his tales of his time in the air are unmistakably true.

A Defense of Hume on Miracles

Product : A Defense of Hume on Miracles
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Since its publication in the mid-eighteenth century, Hume's discussion of miracles has been the target of severe and often ill-tempered attacks. In this book, one of our leading historians of philosophy offers a systematic response to these attacks. Arguing that these criticisms have--from the very start--rested on misreadings, Robert Fogelin begins by providing a narrative of the way Hume's argument actually unfolds. What Hume's critics (and even some of his defenders) have failed to see is that Hume's primary argument depends on fixing the appropriate standards of evaluating testimony presented on behalf of a miracle. Given the definition of a miracle, Hume quite reasonably argues that the standards for evaluating such testimony must be extremely high. Hume then argues that, as a matter of fact, no testimony on behalf of a religious miracle has even come close to meeting the appropriate standards for acceptance. Fogelin illustrates that Hume's critics have consistently misunderstood the structure of this argument--and have saddled Hume with perfectly awful arguments not found in the text. He responds first to some early critics of Hume's argument and then to two recent critics, David Johnson and John Earman. Fogelin's goal, however, is not to "bash the bashers," but rather to show that Hume's treatment of miracles has a coherence, depth, and power that makes it still the best work on the subject.

Roman Rhetoric: Revolution and the Greek Influence

Product : Roman Rhetoric: Revolution and the Greek Influence
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Greek and Roman traditions dominate classical rhetoric. Conventional historical accounts characterize Roman rhetoric as an appropriation and modification of Greek rhetoric, particularly the rhetoric that flourished in fifth and fourth centuries BCE Athens. However, the origins, nature and endurance of this Greco-Roman relationship have not been thoroughly explained. ROMAN RHETORIu REVOLUTION AND THE GREEK INFLUENCE reveals that while Romans did benefit from Athenian rhetoric, their own rhetoric was also influenced by later Greek and non-Hellenic cultures, particularly the Etruscan civilization that held hegemony over all of Italy for hundreds of years before Rome came to power. Through the examination of archaeological, epigraphical, historical and literary evidence, ROMAN RHETORIC reveals that the relationship between Greek and Roman rhetoric was dynamic, evolving, and socially interactive. The long history of interaction between Greeks and Romans facilitated a cross-cultural rhetoric that evolved over time and was shaped by social and political forces. These forces often do not appear explicitly in rhetorical theory and practice, but they undeniably influenced classical rhetoric. ROMAN RHETORIC clarifies the relationships between Greek and Roman classical rhetoric by showing the historical forces that shaped their evolution as Romans conquered the Etruscans, as Greeks colonized areas of southern Italy that came to be called Magna Graecia, as Rome changed from Republic to Empire, and as the educational dominance of the Second Sophistic was challenged by efforts to create an emerging Christian rhetoric. RICHARD LEO ENOS is Professor and holder of the Lillian Radford Chair of Rhetoricand Composition at Texas Christian University. His research concentration is in classical rhetoric with an emphasis in the relationship between oral and written discourse. He is past president of the American Society for the History of Rhetoric (19801981) and the Rhetoric Society of America (19901991). He received the RSA George E. Yoos Award Distinguished Service and was inducted as an RSA Fellow in 2006. He is the founding editor of ADVANCES IN THE HISTORY OF RHETORIC and the editor (with David E. German Colonialism: Race, the Holocaust, and Postwar Germany

Product : German Colonialism: Race, the Holocaust, and Postwar Germany
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : More than half a century before the mass executions of the Holocaust, Germany devastated the peoples of southwestern Africa. While colonialism might seem marginal to German history, controversial new scholarship compares the acts of this period with Nazi practices on the Eastern and Western fronts. Examples of the most important research conducted on the "continuity thesis" over the past five years, the chapters in this anthology debate the connections between German colonialist activities and the behavior of Germany during World War II. Some argue that the country's domination of southwestern Africa gave rise to perceptions of racial difference and superiority at home, contributing to a nascent nationalism that blossomed into National Socialism and the Holocaust. Others remain skeptical, and both sides are well-represented. Contributors merge Germany's colonial past with debates over the country's identity and history and compare its colonial crimes with other European ventures. Issues discussed range from the denial or marginalization of German genocide to the place of colonialism and the Holocaust within Germany and Israel's postwar relations. Authors also compare the legacy of genocide in both Europe and Africa.

Mendel's Principles of Heredity: A Defence, with a Translation of Mendel's Original Papers on Hybridisation

Product : Mendel's Principles of Heredity: A Defence, with a Translation of Mendel's Original Papers on Hybridisation
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : William Bateson (1861-1926) began his academic career working on variation in animals in the light of evolutionary theory. He was inspired by the rediscovery in 1900 of the 1860s work on plant hybridisation by the Austrian monk Gregor Mendel (included here as an appendix) to pursue further experimental work in what he named 'genetics'. He realised that Mendel's results could help to solve difficult biological questions and controversies and to challenge the status quo in evolutionary studies. Annoyed by the 'apathetic' stance of his evolutionist colleagues, and incensed by a scathing critique of Mendel by the Oxford professor Raphael Weldon, Bateson incorporated an English translation of Mendel's work into this 1902 book along with a defence of Mendel's statistical experiments and the principles of heredity derived from them. His book is an impassioned appeal for scientists to adopt this 'brilliant method' which he felt could revolutionise both scholarship and industry.

Between Authority and Interpretation: On the Theory of Law and Practical Reason

Product : Between Authority and Interpretation: On the Theory of Law and Practical Reason
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In this book Joseph Raz develops his views on some of the central questions in practical philosophy: legal, political, and moral. The book provides an overview of Raz's work on jurisprudence and the nature of law in the context of broader questions in the philosophy of practical reason. The book opens with a discussion of methodological issues, focusing on understanding the nature of jurisprudence. It asks how the nature of law can be explained, and how the success of a legal theory can be established. The book then addresses central questions on the nature of law, its relation to morality, the nature and justification of authority, and the nature of legal reasoning. It explains how legitimate law, while being a branch of applied morality, is also a relatively autonomous system, which has the potential to bridge moral differences among its subjects. Raz offers responses to some critical reactions to his theory of authority, adumbrating, and modifying the theory to meet some of them. The final part of the book brings together for the first time Raz's work on the nature of interpretation in law and the humanities. It includes a new essay explaining interpretive pluralism and the possibility of interpretive innovation. Taken together, the essays in the volume offer a valuable introduction for students coming for the first time to Raz's work in the philosophy of law, and an original contribution to many of the current debates in practical philosophy.

Creating a Better Place to Live: The Argument for Craft Education

Product : Creating a Better Place to Live: The Argument for Craft Education
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Where would we be without the movements that corroborate our feelings and desires and make a practical difference in our lives? In a timely fashion, this book challenges our understanding of craft activity. Creating a Better Place to Live: The Argument for Craft Education reads as a social critique that champions the culture and relevance of this practice in a refreshing way. A redefined account of craft activity is given, while different positions are postulated as to its role. This book asserts that the teaching, professional practice, and policy making of craft activity needs to change in order to benefit society in a more constructive manner. Far from being just an adjunct to production requirements and a slave to economic conceptions of life, the theory, history, and contemporary practice of craft activity can be utilized considerately to create a better environment for us all. The delights, hard hitting conceptions, foibles, and intelligence of craft work are debated. This discourse argues that craft activity is vital for living well and is a voice of freedom, common observation, collective effort, and reason that can affect our social cohesion, sympathetic unity, independence, and passions in life.

Judicial Reform as Political Insurance: Argentina, Peru, and Mexico in the 1990s

Product : Judicial Reform as Political Insurance: Argentina, Peru, and Mexico in the 1990s
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : During the 1990s, judicial reform swept Latin America. While some of the region's supreme courts have been able to exercise increased power as a result of these reforms, others have not. Why do some instances of judicial reform appear to be leading to the development of a powerful judiciary while others have failed to do so? In this careful analysis, Jodi S. Finkel investigates judicial reform in Argentina, Mexico, and Peru. She suggests that while ruling parties can be induced to initiate judicial reforms by introducing constitutional revisions, they often prove unwilling to implement these constitutional changes by enacting required legislation. To understand the outcomes of judicial reform, as well as to predict where reforms are likely to empower courts, it is necessary to examine the political incentives faced by politicians at the implementation phase. Finkel argues that the implementation of judicial reform may serve the ruling party as an insurance policy, in that a strong judicial branch reduces the risks faced by a ruling party once it loses power and becomes the opposition. Finkel suggests that as the ruling party's probability of reelection declines, the likelihood of the enactment of reforms resulting in an empowered judiciary increases. "This book will be of interest for those in Latin American studies, where it should be well-received due to the author's close familiarity with and authority on the countries about which she writes; for scholars in the law and society field, where it supports and complements the work of Ginsburg and Hirschl; and to those in the policy field, to whom the book offers several important lessons." --Lisa Hilbink, University of Minnesota "By highlighting politicians' interest in protection against future threats, Jodi Finkel convincingly explains their seemingly paradoxical decision to enact judicial reforms that limit their own power. Her book constitutes a particularly interesting, thoughtful, and theoretically significant contribution to the burgeoning literature on judicial politics in Latin America." --Kurt Weyland, Lozano Long Professor of Latin American Politics, University of Texas at Austin "In this lucid study, Jodi Finkel extends our understanding of the politics of judicial empowerment with three case studies from Latin America. Well written and tightly argued, the book makes a convincing case that the incentives of politicians, rather than pressure from civil society or external actors, are the key factor to explain variation in judicial reform. Finkel has made a major contribution to the nascent literature on judicial politics in Latin America. " --Tom Ginsburg, University of Illinois

Serving the People of God: Collected Shorter Writings of J.I. Packer on the Church, Evangelism, the Charismatic Movement, and Chri

Product : Serving the People of God: Collected Shorter Writings of J.I. Packer on the Church, Evangelism, the Charismatic Movement, and Chri
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : What is the nature of the church? How should members behave toward one another? What does Christian unity mean? Packer explores these issues along with topics such as the celebration of the Lord's Supper. From dealing with the church as it is, Packer moves on to examine the church as it should be, discussing revival and renewal in a church context. Evangelism is then addressed both from an apologetic and a theological angle that reflects on the content of evangelism and the scope of the proclamation. Evangelism should lead into Christian living, and thus the final group of articles consists of reflections on sanctification, morality, leisure and conscience. Here Packer also addresses the issue of what to do if God seems distant. Throughout the volume readers will be both informed and encouraged in their faith. J.I. Packer is Board of Governors' Professor of Theology at Regent College, Vancouver. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential thinkers and apologists for Christianity in the twentieth century. He is author of numerous books, including "Knowing God," "Rediscovering Holiness" and "Concise Theology: A Guide to Historic Beliefs." The Collected Shorter Writings of J.I. Packer contain the majority of shorter pieces published by J.I. Packer over the past thirty years. The articles included in this four-volume set range from short devotional pieces published in church-sponsored journals, to opinion articles for popular journals like "Christianity Today," to major articles for scholarly journals.

Through Dungeons Deep

Description : Through Dungeons Deep delves into the art of role-playing, showing players and Game Masters how to have more fun and excitement with fantasy role-playing games. First published more than 25 years ago, this book was an instant classic. Long out of print, the original edition sells for several times its cover price. This Norton Creek Press reprint makes the book available (and affordable) again. Robert Plamondon wrote Through Dungeons Deep after realizing that the most important part of role-playing games-role-playing-is barely mentioned in gaming systems. When it is, it is often confused with rules. But role-playing really boils down to make-believe, and the real fun in role-playing games comes from unlocking your imagination. But it's also important to carry a length of rope and wear shoes you can run in.

Description : This anthology of primary material brings together literary and non-literary texts from the eighteenth-century focusing on issues including commerce and colonialism. Britons' sense of identity in the eighteenth-century see-sawed between embattled vulnerability and unassailable supremacy. Empire was crucial in shaping this, but contact with other peoples often threw into sharp relief or transformed this sense of identity. This book will be an essential resource for those studying this period; it traces these shifts in mood and the impact of imperial encounters in a variety of material, including poems, plays, speeches, letters, and accounts of travel, exploration and captivity.

Human Rights in the Twentieth Century

Product : Human Rights in the Twentieth Century
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Has there always been an inalienable "right to have rights" as part of the human condition, as Hannah Arendt famously argued? The contributions to this volume examine how human rights came to define the bounds of universal morality in the course of the political crises and conflicts of the twentieth century. Although human rights are often viewed as a self-evident outcome of this history, the essays collected here make clear that human rights are a relatively recent invention that emerged in contingent and contradictory ways. Focusing on specific instances of their assertion or violation during the past century, this volume analyzes the place of human rights in various arenas of global politics, providing an alternative framework for understanding the political and legal dilemmas that these conflicts presented. In doing so, this volume captures the state of the art in a field that historians have only recently begun to explore.

Popular Bohemia: Modernism and Urban Culture in Nineteenth-Century Paris

Product : Popular Bohemia: Modernism and Urban Culture in Nineteenth-Century Paris
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : A radical reconceptualization of modernism, this book traces the appearance of the modern artist to the Paris of the 1830s and links the emergence of an enduring modernist aesthetic to the fleeting forms of popular culture. Contrary to conventional views of a private self retreating from history and modernity, "Popular Bohemia" shows us the modernist as a public persona parodying the stereotypes of commercial mass culture. Here we see how the modern artist--alternately assuming the roles of the melodramatic hero, the urban flaneur, the female hysteric, the tribal primitive--created his own version of an expressive, public modernity in opposition to an increasingly repressive and conformist bourgeois culture. And here we see how a specifically modern aesthetic culture in nineteenth-century Paris came about, not in opposition to commercial popular culture, but in close alliance with it. "Popular Bohemia" revises dominant historical narratives about modernism from the perspective of a theoretically informed cultural history that spans the period between 1830 and 1914. In doing so, it reconnects the intellectual history of avant-garde art with the cultural history of bohemia and the social history of the urban experience to reveal the circumstances in which a truly modernist culture emerged.

Call Me Tom: The Life of Thomas F. Eagleton

Product : Call Me Tom: The Life of Thomas F. Eagleton
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : "Call Me Tom "is the first book-length biography of one of Missouri's most successful senators. A moderate liberal in a conservative state, Thomas F. Eagleton was known for his political independence, integrity, and intelligence, likely the reasons Eagleton never once lost an election in his thirty years of public service. Born in St. Louis, Eagleton began his public career in 1956 as St. Louis Circuit Attorney. At 27, he was the youngest person in the history of the state to hold this position, and he duplicated that feat in his next two elected positions, as attorney general in 1960 and lieutenant governor in 1964. In 1968, he was elected to the U.S. Senate, serving until 1987. He was thrown into the national spotlight in 1972 when revelations regarding his mental health, particularly the shock treatments he received for his depression, forced his resignation as a vice presidential nominee of the Democratic Party. All of that would overshadow his significant contributions as senator, especially on environmental and social legislation, as well as his defense of Congressional authority on war making and his role in the U. S. military disengagement from Southeast Asia in 1973. Respected biographer James N. Giglio provides readers with an encompassing and nuanced portrait of Eagleton by placing the man and his career in the context of his times. Giglio allows readers to see his rumpled suits, smell the smoke of his Pall Mall cigarettes, hear his gravelly voice, and relish his sense of humor. At the same time, he does not shy away from the personal torments that Eagleton had to overcome. A definitive examination of the senator's career also reveals his unique ability to work with Republican counterparts especially prior to the 1980s when bipartisanship was more possible. Measuring the effect his mental illness had on his career, Giglio determines that the removal of aspirations for higher office in 1972 made Eagleton a better senator. He consistently took principled stands, with the ultimate goal of preserving and modernizing the agenda of Franklin D. Roosevelt, his favorite president. Thoroughly researched using the Eagleton Papers and interviews with more than eighty-five people close to Eagleton, including family, friends, colleagues, subordinates, and former classmates, "Call Me Tom "offers an engaging and in-depth portrayal of a man who remained a devoted public servant throughout his life.

Presidential Impeachment and the New Political Instability in Latin America

Product : Presidential Impeachment and the New Political Instability in Latin America
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : This book documents the emergence of a new pattern of political instability in Latin America. Traditional military coups have receded in the region, but elected presidents are still ousted from power as a result of recurrent crises. An bal P rez-Li n shows that presidential impeachment has become the main constitutional instrument employed by civilian elites to depose unpopular rulers. Based on detailed comparative research in five countries and extensive historical information, the book explains why crises without breakdown have become the dominant form of instability in recent years and why some presidents are removed from office while others survive in power. The analysis emphasizes the erosion of presidential approval resulting from corruption and unpopular policies, the formation of hostile coalitions in Congress, and the role of investigative journalism. This book challenges classic assumptions in studies of presidentialism and provides important insights for the fields of political communication, democratization, political behavior, and institutional analysis.

Historical Representation

Product : Historical Representation
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : This book fully recognizes the aestheticism inherent in historical writing while acknowledging its claim to satisfy the demands of rational and scientific inquiry. Focusing on the notion of representation and on the necessity of distinguishing between representation and description, it argues that the traditional semantic apparatus of meaning, truth, and reference that we use for description must be redefined if we are to understand properly the nature of historical writing. The author shows that historical representation is essentially aesthetic, though its adequacy can be discussed rationally. He defines the criteria for representational adequacy, and examines the relationship between these criteria and value judgments. He also investigates the historicist conception of historical writing and the notions of identity and narrativity. This investigation takes place against the backdrop of the ideas of four of the most influential contemporary historical theorists: Erich Auerbach, Arthur Danto, Hayden White, and Jorn Rusen. The book aims to identify and to explore for historical theory the "juste milieu" between the extravagances of the literary approach to historical writing and the narrow-mindedness of empiricists. The search for this "juste milieu" leads to a rationalist aesthetics of historical writing, a position that repeats both the aesthetic dimension of all historical writing and the criteria defining the rationality of the discipline of history.

Terror, Terrorism, and the Human Condition

Product : Terror, Terrorism, and the Human Condition
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In an attempt to explore the impact of terrorism at its most basic level--that of sowing fear and anxiety--this book investigates our now centuries-long attraction to, and dread of, terror and its progeny, including terrorism, or political terror, and mass murder. It is also a call to thought, and an appeal to reasoned action. Charles Webel argues that while a "war" on terrorism cannot succeed in eliminating terror from our human condition, this does not mean that it cannot, and should not, be confronted by means other than war. If we are to survive, we need to create new, basically nonviolent, means to resolve conflicts and to reduce their lethality. In order to do this, we must first understand the roots of terrorism--the emotions and human psychology that drive it--so that we can better counteract it. Through interviews with survivors of terror, from the Holocaust, Dresden fire bombing, and Nagasaki to the 9/11 and Madrid attacks, Terror, Terrorism, and the Human Condition seeks to provide this understanding and to point our way toward a more hopeful future by providing concrete suggestions on how to combat terrorism without waging a "war on terror."

Description : "Matory's ethnography commands serious respect. His centralthesis concerning the gendering of power relations in the Oyo Empire, and its continuing expression in the cult of Sango, is brilliant and original. The symbolic analysis of contemporary initiation to the Sango cult ... shows real virtuosity ... Also] of great value is his account of the state of religious heterogeneity in Oyo North. This book should make a significant mark outside the field of Yoruba studies, in the anthropology of gender at large." J.D.Y. Peel, FBA, University of London "An exemplary exercise in historical anthropology ... with interpretive and forensic skill the author] narrates how the traditions of Sango and Ogun are carried into and participate inthe post-independence political and economical developments, and how they relate to contemporary Islamic and Christian religious streams." Stanley J. Tambiah, Harvard University "A bold and innovative study of the interplay between gender, power and religion. Its relevance to feminist theory is unquestionable ... Gender categories and all that is associated with them are changed by the negotiation of politically interested actors, both male and female ... It situates itself within a 'mythic' paradigm which, the author argues, is close to indigenous conceptualizations of the past and present; but at the same time it is unmistakably located in the real, hybrid and confusing world of contemporary Nigeria, and not in some idealized world of 'tradition'." Karin Barber, University of Birmingham " Matory's] richly argued text, strong with insight, strong with documents, is a classic in Yoruba studies." Robert F. Thompson, Yale University "This second edition of the seminal book] seems more salient in retrospect as the international interest in orisha worship and the meaning of transatlantic aesthetics that claim a Yoruba ancestry increases...Along with his theoretical guidance, Matory provides rich procedural, ritual detail that contextualizes the multifaceted aspect of orisha worship for specific sets of completed ritual communities." European Identity

Product : European Identity
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Why are hopes fading for a single European identity? Economic integration has advanced faster and further than predicted, yet the European sense of 'who we are' is fragmenting. Exploiting decades of permissive consensus, Europe's elites designed and completed the single market, the euro, the Schengen passport-free zone, and, most recently, crafted an extraordinarily successful policy of enlargement. At the same time, these attempts to de-politicize politics, to create Europe by stealth, have produced a political backlash. This ambitious survey of identity in Europe captures the experiences of the winners and losers, optimists and pessimists, movers and stayers in a Europe where spatial and cultural borders are becoming ever more permeable. A full understanding of Europe's ambivalence, refracted through its multiple identities, lies at the intersection of competing European political projects and social processes.

Narrative Inquiry

Product : Narrative Inquiry
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Narrative inquiry allows for a detailed examination of the structure and content of a story and its significance in relation to psychological, sociological, or historical frames of reference. Narrative methods are ideal for the study of intra- and inter-personal process. They are traditionally used to understand first-person accounts obtained in interviews, but unlike other forms of analysis, the storied nature of data is retained, allowing for qualitative analysis of personal experience in relation to time, social condition, and place. This pocket guide presents a reader-friendly introduction to narrative inquiry. It focuses on one particular research design, the case study design, providing a broad framework in which narrative and other relevant data may be collected and the specific ways in which audio recordings of interviews may be transcribed. With dozens of transcript examples taken from research conducted around the English-speaking world, this guide reviews prevailing analytic frameworks for the analysis of transcribed interviews, which include analyses of narrative content, structure, and context. Two cutting-edge approaches, critical narrative analysis and contextual discursive analysis, are also examined for applicability in teasing out how interviewees come to give the narratives that they do-the psychological processes and representational forms that people draw on in telling the stories of their lives. Issues pertaining to validity, reflexivity, and ethics in relation to narrative inquiry are also delineated. Appendices contain a summary of narrative analytic methods and a detailed guide for developing a narrative research proposal. The over 250 references include core references in narrative inquiry that span a range of disciplines and offer a platform for further study of this unique and vital method. Ideal for researchers and graduate students new to narrative study, this is a valuable guide to developing research projects that depend on narrative methods.

Karl Marx: His Life and Work

Description : "The author has performed a needed service in giving us an excellent biography of a man whose influence has extended to almost every people on the face of the earth and under whose banner are enrolled something like ten million voters. There are many illustrations and the fund of information is such that the work is indispensable to all who would intelligently oppose or enthusiastically support the movement." - San Francisco Chronicle John Spargo (1876-1966) was a leading socialist writer of the period. Spargo, trained as a stonecutter, but became a lay Methodist minister, became identified with the socialists in England in early life, became a leader in the English labor movement; and served on the Executive Council of the Social Democratic Federation. He immigrated to America in 1901 and was thereafter a longtime member of the National Executive Committee of the American Socialist Party. He regarded Bolshevism as an "inverted form of Czarism." He edited the socialist periodical, The Comrade, became involved in child labor issues; helped promote laws on child and woman labor, and moved to Vermont in 1909. He remained active in socialist circles, but moved to the right over World War I, and with Samuel Gompers and George Creel, founded the American Alliance for Labor and Democracy, in favor of American involvement in the war. He gradually became outspoken advocate of free-market capitalism. His major publications include The Bitter Cry of Children (1906) and Karl Marx: His Life and Work (1909).

The Royal Remains: The People's Two Bodies and the Endgames of Sovereignty

Product : The Royal Remains: The People's Two Bodies and the Endgames of Sovereignty
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : "The king is dead. Long live the king " In early modern Europe, the king's body was literally sovereign--and the right to rule was immediately transferrable to the next monarch in line upon the king's death. In "The Royal Remains, "Eric L. Santner argues that the "carnal" dimension of the structures and dynamics of sovereignty hasn't disappeared from politics. Instead, it migrated to a new location--the life of the people--where something royal continues to linger in the way we obsessively track and measure the vicissitudes of our flesh. Santner demonstrates the ways in which democratic societies have continued many of the rituals and practices associated with kingship in displaced, distorted, and usually, unrecognizable forms. He proposes that those strange mental activities Freud first lumped under the category of the unconscious--which often manifest themselves in peculiar physical ways--are really the uncanny second life of these "royal remains," now animated in the body politic of modern neurotic subjects. Pairing Freud with Kafka, Carl Schmitt with Hugo von Hofmannsthal, and Ernst Kantorowicz with Rainer Maria Rilke, Santner generates brilliant readings of multiple texts and traditions of thought en route to reconsidering the sovereign imaginary. Ultimately, "The Royal Remains" locates much of modernity--from biopolitical controversies to modernist literary experiments--in this transition from subjecthood to secular citizenship. This major new work will make a bold and original contribution to discussions of politics, psychoanalysis, and modern art and literature.

A Glossary of Applied Linguistics

Product : A Glossary of Applied Linguistics
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Applied Linguistics is still a growing field. Key texts and handbooks have appeared in recent years and international applied linguistics conferences and professional associations occur regularly. While Applied Linguistics continues to attract new entrants and to generate new strands of research, there is a need for a clear and concise map of the field. This is the purpose of the "Glossary." The author, Alan Davies, is a well-established, well-published authority on applied linguistics. Not a typically dry dictionary, Dr. Davies infuses the alphabetical entries with a touch of humor and thought-provoking context creating an up-to-date, useful, and coherent view of applied linguistics. The "Glossary" compiles the most ubiquitously used terms in applied linguistics and teacher-training literature. It takes a wide-ranging view of the field, drawing not only on linguistics but including psychology, sociology, education, measurement theory, speech therapy, translation, and language planning. Other features include: *numerous cross-references to key terms; *an introduction, which discusses the difficulty of defining applied linguistics; and *a brief reading list of key text. The primary market is master's student in Applied Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, and TESL/TEFL. Undergraduate students, particularly in language fields and in education will also find it helpful, as well as language teachers who have not themselves followed Applied Linguistics courses and who are interested in finding out about the field.

Entangled Geographies: Empire and Technopolitics in the Global Cold War

Product : Entangled Geographies: Empire and Technopolitics in the Global Cold War
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : The Cold War was not simply a duel of superpowers. It took place not just in Washington and Moscow but also in the social and political arenas of geographically far-flung countries emerging from colonial rule. Moreover, Cold War tensions were manifest not only in global political disputes but also in struggles over technology. Technological systems and expertise offered a powerful way to shape countries politically, economically, socially, and culturally. "Entangled Geographies"explores how Cold War politics, imperialism, and postcolonial nation building became entangled in technologies and considers the legacies of those entanglements for today's globalized world. The essays address such topics as the islands and atolls taken over for military and technological purposes by the supposedly non-imperial United States, apartheid-era South Africa's efforts to achieve international legitimacy as a nuclear nation, international technical assistance and Cold War politics, the Saudi irrigation system that spurred a Shi'i rebellion, and the momentary technopolitics of emergency as practiced by Medecins sans Frontieres. The contributors to "Entangled Geographies" offer insights from the anthropology and history of development, from diplomatic history, and from science and technology studies. The book represents a unique synthesis of these three disciplines, achieving new perspectives on the global Cold War.

The Patristic Understanding of Creation

Product : The Patristic Understanding of Creation
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : The Patristic Understanding of Creation encapsulates what the Church Fathers had to say, in their own words, on the topic of creation. This understanding of creation, however, faces tremendous challenges in our day, especially in discussions at the intersection of science and religion. This anthology is therefore not merely of academic or historical interest. In reasserting a theologically sound understanding of creation, this anthology fills a need that is both practical and urgent.
