Celebrating the Fourth: Ideas and Inspiration for Teachers of Grade Four

Product : Celebrating the Fourth: Ideas and Inspiration for Teachers of Grade Four
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : "-You will be a better teacher for having read and savored this unique and remarkable book." - Regie Routman Can a teacher inspire learning, develop a sense of classroom community, hold the interests of a changing assortment of nine- and ten-year-olds, and continue to spark her own enthusiasm in the process? Joan Servis has been doing that for twenty-five years, and in "Celebrating the Fourth," she shares the experience she has gained over a quarter of a century as a fourth-grade teacher in Ohio's progressive Shaker Heights school district. Beginning as a "skill-and-drill teacher," Servis reached a turning point more than ten years ago when a classroom experiment using authentic literature texts yielded dramatic results. Questioning her old practices, she began to consult more freely with colleagues and students. Now, Servis champions a collaborative approach to learning, and shows how your classroom can be invigorated with techniques like daily self-reflection, giving students choices and responsibility, creating a risk-taking environment, and applauding students' success. "Celebrating the Fourth" is unique not just in its grade-specific focus, but in its comprehensiveness. All subject areas from language arts to math and science are explored, as well as issues like parent outreach and building a sense of classroom community. Along with recommendations for resources and materials, Servis provides sample assessment forms. Especially timely are her ideas for satisfying parents' and administrators' requirements, without diminishing student input.

The Beginning Reading Handbook: Strategies for Success

Product : The Beginning Reading Handbook: Strategies for Success
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : " If you have already purchased The Beginning Reading Handbook and want to access the downloadable, ready-to-use, versions of the parent letters included with the book, click here. " If you're looking for one comprehensive book featuring the best strategies for teaching reading, then your search has ended. Throughout "The Beginning Reading Handbook," the emphasis is on the numerous, specific strategies that can be easily implemented with young children - not only to make learning to read a truly joyous experience, but to help build a strong foundation that will lead to long-term success in school. Gail Heald-Taylor uses literature as the foundation for instruction. That is, everything - comprehension, the study of sentences, words, and phonics, etc. - is conducted within the context of good literature, via contextual instruction and learning. Certain strategies show you how to help children understand stories by reading to and with them before expecting them to read alone. Other strategies help draw children's attention to features of print - such as sentences, phrases, and words - as they read and reread familiar, predictable-pattern literature by reading in unison with the teacher, reading together with other children, reading with partners, and then reading alone. Also, you are shown how to encourage children to use phonics in effective ways and how to use guided reading to pave the way for independent reading. Each activity stands alone so that you can use them in any order and at any time. "The Beginning Reading Handbook" also includes examples of children's work, an informal reading test to determine a child's reading phase, a list of literature selections, a developmental reading behavior inventory, and a helpful seventy-three-term glossary. Numerous ready-to-use letters to parents can be downloaded for free by purchasers of the book.

Reading the Naked Truth: Literacy, Legislation, and Lies

Product : Reading the Naked Truth: Literacy, Legislation, and Lies
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : With all the talk and print about "scientifically based" reading research, what educational reformers have concealed is that these "findings" are scandalously flawed Legislation mandating authoritarian and harmful prepackaged reading instruction does nothing but serve corporate interests and political agendas with little regard paid to actually improving reading skills. As he connotes in the title of this urgent expose, Gerald Coles uncovers what's absent from all the claims with which teachers and the public have been assailed. He offers a scathing indictment of the National Reading Panel's "research" and other attempts to undermine reading education and the educators equipped to do it best. Strong on slogans"Reading First," "No Child Left Behind"but falling far short on science, education legislation disguises itself in a cunning apolitical-research-as-final-arbiter stratagem. And this has only been fortified by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development whose own studies, as Coles proved in "Misreading Reading," are rife with deficiencies in design and reasoning. Coles analyzes in detail the language of the National Reading Panel Report, provides counterarguments to its claims, and investigates significant questions it has raised: What were those "100,000 studies" the NRP allegedly reviewed? What were the qualifications of the members of the NRP?Did the panel ask the right questions? Were the views represented on the panel sufficiently inclusive?Did the NRP satisfy the Congressional mandate to ensure that all children learn to read?Without Coles' thorough critique of this "scientific" foundation for reading legislation, the media will continue to portray the NRP Report as gospel; the publicparticularly teachers, policy-makers, and parentswill have inadequate information for making informed instructional decisions; and federal, state, and local advocates of beginning reading instruction with a skills emphasis will have little opposition in achieving their objectives.

Thinking Like Mathematicians: Putting the Nctm Standards Into Practice

Product : Thinking Like Mathematicians: Putting the Nctm Standards Into Practice
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : "Thinking Like Mathematicians" has already helped thousands of math teachers envision what can happen if they implement the NCTM Standards. It reveals that, with the right teaching strategies and curricula, students can become confident, creative, and actively involved in the math process. They can actually think like mathematicians. Some of the best strategies for achieving these goals are modeled throughout "Thinking Like Mathematicians," which has now been updated for Standards 2000. Through vignettes and anecdotes, you'll meet children - many of whom were previously unsuccessful at math - who are problem solvers and confident of their ability to reason mathematically, value the role of mathematics in their lives, and share that understanding with their peers and teachers. You'll also meet the teachers who planned for and implemented the programs that facilitate these mathematics learning processes. Specific chapters include discussions about Standards 2000, planning for a Standards 2000-based program, guidelines for implementing such a program, and modes of assessment and evaluation. A case study is presented of one dynamic child whose remarkable mathematical thinking might have been discouraged by a traditional classroom. The book concludes with a series of questions and answers that will help to explain recommended classroom practices.

You'll find ways to help students discuss religious beliefs, ethics, abuse, relationships, and other issues Crutcher's characters face. And you'll see how his novels can help increase readers' motivation. Better yet, additional resources at www.heinemann.com/hauschildt/ help you better understand Crutcher's work and ways to incorporate it into your planning. Use the edginess and honesty that adolescents love about Chris Crutcher to inspire your readers. Read "Teaching the Selected Works of Chris Crutcher." You'll spark more meaningful discussions among students and show them that literature can change their lives.

Our George: A Family Memoir

Product : Our George: A Family Memoir
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : It's a story everyone thinks they know, the young boy from the back streets of Belfast who grew up to be the most famous soccer player in the world, a legend who was the first superstar of the sport but whose troubled personal life, as much as his athletic genius, came to dominate the headlines. But Barbara and Carol, George's sisters, and Dickie, his father, know more. Revealing for the first time the real story of George Best--as told by those who knew him and loved him most, this is the inside story of the ordinary Belfast family whose love for, and contact with, their famous son and brother never wavered through the years. It's the story of a family desperately helping him as he battled the illness that also claimed the life of their beloved wife and mother. Illustrated with a wealth of previously unseen family photographs, documents and correspondence--much of it deeply poignant--between George and his family, this is a searingly honest book about the influences that molded the legend, and the demons that haunted his life. Speaking for the first time, the intensely private Best family reveals how George really felt about the people and the events that shaped his life. Barbara Best is frank in confronting George's own failings and those of some of the people who were close to him, as well as offering a unique perspective on the many pressures to which he was subject.

On Air: Methods and Meanings of Radio

Product : On Air: Methods and Meanings of Radio
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : It reaches millions of people every minute of the day, it costs us virtually nothing and yet we take it entirely for granted. Superseded by television as the primary source of entertainment and information, radio still has a unique place in the mass media spectrum. While the textual properties and reception of film and television have received considerable critical attention, until now radio has only really been considered in terms of its history and its modes of production. 'On Air' adopts a wide-ranging theoretical and critical approach. It provides an in-depth examination of radio's codes (speech, music, noise and silence),and the conventions of using these codes and the dominant modes of reception. The text offers a vocabulary and methodology for analysing radio programmes, drawing on work by both media theorists and professional broadcasters in Britain, Australia, and North America. Written by an academic and a practitioner, 'On Air' provides a critical overview of radio for media students, as well as suggestions for practical activities, a time-line of major events in the history of radio, and a glossary of key terms.

The Caribbean

Product : The Caribbean
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Columbus "discovered" the Caribbean, not North America, and it was in the Caribbean that Amerindians first felt the effects of European steel, gunpowder, and (deadlier by far) microbes. The region became a pawn in the European struggle for empire and, later, a significant player in the developing Atlantic economy. Its economic importance rested on a substructure of African slavery, which provided labor for the numerous plantations across the region. However, slaves resisted slavery and, ultimately, the Abolitionist cause was carried successfully, initially in the British parliament and gradually elsewhere. Emancipation did not provide solutions to the ancillary ills of servitude--poverty, exploitation, inequality--and protest and resistance to colonial rule (whether British, Spanish, French, Dutch, or Danish) continued. In the twentieth century, the United States largely replaced the old European powers as the dominant players in the area, and sought to intervene when it perceived its interests were threatened.

Description : David Sheppard's particular blend of interests single him out as unique among Anglican bishops. An outstanding sportsman as well as a dedicated cleric, many will remember him first and foremost as an English cricket captain. Others will recall his ecumenical strengths and his partnership with the Roman Catholic Archbishop, Derek Warlock, when they were both incumbents in Liverpool. However, it is his concern for the poor and disadvantaged, and his refusal to collude with Westminister politics, that has made him such a strong personality in the church. This book offers an insight into a man who is uncomfortable with theological stereotypes and is concerned to cut through "comfortable" Britain.

Description : On April 13th, 2004, Gloria Hunniford's 41-year-old daughter, Caron Keating, died after a secret seven year battle with cancer. The world that had changed with Caron's diagnosis, now shattered. Life had been cruelly interrupted, a black hole opened in Gloria;s heart, she was consumed with the unimaginable grief that the loss of a child brings, and she was alone--or so she felt. Within days of Caron's death letters started to arrive. People who had lost their children felt compelled to write. Strangers understood what she was going through often more than the family and friends standing next to her. There were many, many dark days but the letters kept coming and somehow she managed to do the impossible. Wake up everyday, get out of bed, breathe. The black hole is still there, sometimes as big as ever, but she has found a way to live with it, around it. This is the story of how Gloria and her family survived Caron's death, but it is not only her story. It is written for those who held her while she raged. It is written for all those people who helped her through that first terrible year by writing, but mostly it is written for the many thousands who didn't. Grief is lonely, but as this book shows, you are not alone. Death affects us all at some point. Gloria will never again be the carefree woman she once was, the loss of a loved one is always with you, but so are the living. This is how she found her way back to them.

Stars and Stripes Triumphant

Product : Stars and Stripes Triumphant
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : "In England, Irish-born citizens are being herded into prison camps. On the high seas, a furious British Navy is seizing American cargo ships bound for Europe. And on the Thames, a new weapon of unparalleled destructive force is sailing toward an impregnable city-spearheaded by a daring act of espionage. For U.S. president Abraham Lincoln, Britain's Queen Victoria, Lord Palmerston, and a loyal opposition, a day of reckoning is at hand . . . and so is history's most astounding battle. " Harry Harrison's series of alternate history, based on the U.S. Civil War, stands as a provocative work of imagination, drama, and brilliant historical insight. Now in the thrilling finale, Harrison" "tells a stunning, action-packed story of America's rapidly growing military might being locked, loaded, and aimed at the heart of England itself. For the two countries that share a language and a heritage, the conflict began at the dawn of the U.S. Civil War. Just as America was about to tear itself to pieces, Britain itself committed an act of war by seizing a U.S. packet ship. In retaliation, the Confederate States rejoined the Union and took up arms against England. Repulsing a British invasion, and defeating her majesty's army first in Canada, then in Mexico, then in Ireland, American pride and power swelled. Britain, like a wounded lion, howled in shame and anger. Now, Queen Victoria's empire is more dangerous than ever before, turning against the Irish on her own soil, flexing her naval might, and all but forcing a weary President Lincoln to authorize the next step in a headlong journey toward war. A tale of daring and strategy, "Stars and Stripes Triumphant "explores how arrogance turnssuperpowers into victims, how regional conflicts can explode into world wars, and how the personalities of a few men and women can change the course of history itself-for better or for worse.

The Playful World: How Technology Is Transforming Our Imagination

Product : The Playful World: How Technology Is Transforming Our Imagination
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : As you read these words, the architects of the new virtual reality are inventing a world you never imagined: call it the playful world. It's a world of interactive Web-based toys that instantly collapse the gulf between wish and existence, space and time, animate and inanimate. It's a world where the entire fabric of the material world becomes manipulable, programmable, mutable. Situated at the crossroads of high technology and popular culture, the playful world is taking shape at the speed of electronic creativity. Are you ready for it? Your kids are. In this spellbinding new book, Mark Pesce, one of the pioneers in the ongoing technological revolution, explores how a new kind of knowing and a new way of creating are transforming the culture of our time. It started, bizarrely enough, with Furbys, the first toys that had the "will" to grow and interact intelligently with their environment. As Pesce argues, Furbys, for all their cloying cuteness, were a vital sign of a new human endeavor--the ability to copy part of our own intelligence into the physical world. But engineers of the playful world have already gone much further into considerably stranger virtual realms. Pesce takes us inside the world's cutting-edge research facilities where the distinction between bits and atoms is rapidly dissolving. We meet the creators of LEGO Mindstorms, a snap-together plastic device that intelligently controls motors and processes data from sensors. We watch technological geniuses like Marvin Minsky and Eric Drexler turn the theoretical breakthroughs of Nobel laureate Richard Feynman into "nanites"-- tiny ultra-high-speed computers that replicate intelligent life. We observe the launch of the amazing and much-anticipated Sony Playstation 2, a platform that will allow us to bring synthetic worlds into the home and create a gateway to the living planet. Web-based toys are only the beginning--the first glimmer of a new reality that is transforming our entire culture with incredible speed and power. After all, thanks to the computer revolution and the Internet, all of us already command powers that just a generation ago would have been described as magical. Magic is about to take on a whole new dimension. In this dazzling book, Mark Pesce offers a mind-bending preview of the incredible future that awaits us all in The Playful World.

Description : A twelve-year-old boy stumbles upon a savage murder in a dust strewn trailer lost against the backdrop of the California desert. He reports it to the police, but twenty-five years later, the murder remains unsolved. Then, Detective Bob Hightower's worst fears come true when his fourteen-years-old daughter is kidnapped by a satanic cult, The Left Handed Path. The cult's leader, Cyrus, lives by the motto that murder is the "ultimate freedom." There are no clues to where Hightower's daughter may be, aside from the bloody corpses of her mother and stepfather -- a scene remarkably similar to the one described by a little boy twenty-five years earlier. Hightower must rely on Case Hardin, a hardened ex-cult member, for help. She has her own agenda -- to exorcise the demons of cult membership, drug addiction, and ritualistic violence -- in their search. Together they embark on the chase, hoping to rescue Hightower's daughter and themselves before it's too late. Teran's novel is stunning debut that explores what it means to be in control of yourself, of someone else, of events.

The Blood Knight

Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Brimming with passion and adventure, Greg Keyes's epic saga of a royal family's fall from power through treachery and dark magic, set amid the return of ancient evils whose malevolence threatens to annihilate humanity, bids fair to become a classic of its kind. Now, in the eagerly awaited third installment, Keyes draws the threads of his tapestry ever tighter, illuminating old mysteries and introducing new ones as events build toward a shattering climax. The legendary Briar King has awakened, spreading madness and destruction. Half-remembered, poorly understood prophecies seem to point to the young princess Anne Dare, rightful heir to the throne of Crotheny, as the world's only hope. Yet Anne is hunted by the minions of the usurper Robert, whose return from the grave has opened a doorway through which sinister sorceries have poured into the world. Though Anne herself is the conduit of fearsome powers beyond her understanding and control, it is time for girl to become woman, princess to become queen. Anne must stop running and instead march at the head of an army to take back her kingdom . . . or die trying. But a mysterious assassin stalks her, so skilled in the deadly fencing style of dessrata that even Anne's friend and protector Cazio, a master of the form, cannot stand against him, nor can her sworn defender, the young knight Neil MeqVren. As for Anne's other companions-Aspar White, the royal holter who bears an enchanted arrow capable of felling the Briar King; and Stephen Darige, the monk who blew the horn that woke the Briar King from his slumber-they cannot help her, as their separate paths carry them ever deeper into a deadly maze of myth and magic from which return may be impossible. Meanwhile, Queen Muriele is a prisoner of the false king. With no allies but a crippled musician, who is himself a prisoner, and a servingwoman who is both more and less than she seems, Muriele will find herself a pawn in Robert's schemes for conquest-and a weapon to be used against her own daughter.

My Just Desire: The Life of Bess Ralegh, Wife to Sir Walter

Product : My Just Desire: The Life of Bess Ralegh, Wife to Sir Walter
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Young, beautiful, and connected by blood to the most powerful families in England, Bess Throckmorton had as much influence over Queen Elizabeth I as any woman in the realm--but she risked everything to marry the most charismatic man of the day. The secret marriage between Bess and the Queen's beloved Sir Walter Ralegh cost both of them their fortunes, their freedom, and very nearly their lives. Yet it was Bess, resilient, passionate, and politically shrewd, who would live to restore their name and reclaim her political influence. In this dazzling biography, Bess Ralegh finally emerges from her husband's shadow to stand as a complex, commanding figure in her own right. Writing with grace and drama, Anna Beer brings Bess to life as a woman, a wife and mother, an intimate friend of poets and courtiers, and a skilled political infighter in Europe's most powerful and most dangerous court. The only daughter of an ambitious aristocratic family, Bess was thrust at a tender age into the very epicenter of royal power when her parents secured her the position of Elizabeth's Gentlewoman of the Privy Chamber. Bess proved to be a natural player on this stage of extravagant mythmaking and covert sexual politics, until she fell in love with the Queen's Captain of the Guard, the handsome, virile, meteorically rising Ralegh. But their secret marriage, swiftly followed by the birth of their son, would have grave consequences for both of them. Brooking the Queen's wrath and her husband's refusal to acknowledge their marriage, Bess brilliantly stage-managed her social and political rehabilitation and emerged from prison as the leader of a brilliant, fast-living aristocratic set. She survivedpersonal tragedy, the ruinous global voyages launched by her husband, and the vicious plots of high-placed enemies. Though Raleigh in the end fell afoul of court intrigue, Bess lived on into the reign of James I as a woman of hard-won wisdom and formidable power. With compelling historical insight, Anna Beer recreates here the vibrant pageant of Elizabethan England--the brilliant wit and vicious betrayals, the new discoveries and old rivalries, the violence and fierce sexuality of life at court. Peopled by poets and princes, spanning the reigns of two monarchs, moving between the palaces of London and the manor house outside the capital, "My Just Desire" is the portrait of a remarkable woman who lived at the center of an extraordinary time. Settling Accounts Drive to the East

Product : Settling Accounts Drive to the East
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Harry Turtledove-the master of alternate history-has recast the tumultuous twentieth century and created an epic that is powerful, bold, and as convincing as it is provocative. In Drive to the East he continues his saga of warfare that has divided a nation and now threatens the entire world. In 1914, the First World War ignited a brutal conflict in North America, with the United States finally defeating the Confederate States. In 1917, The Great War ended and an era of simmering hatred began, fueled by the despotism of a few and the sacrifice of many. Now it's 1942. The USA and CSA are locked in a tangle of jagged, blood-soaked battle lines, modern weaponry, desperate strategies, and the kind of violence that only the damned could conjure up-for their enemies and themselves. In Richmond, Confederate president and dictator Jake Featherston is shocked by what his own aircraft have done in Philadelphia-killing U.S. president Al Smith in a barrage of bombs. Featherston presses ahead with a secret plan carried out on the dusty plains of Texas, where a so-called detention camp hides a far more evil purpose. As the untested U.S. vice president takes over for Smith, the United States face a furious thrust by the Confederate army, pressing inexorably into Pennsylvania. But with the industrial heartland under siege, Canada in revolt, and U.S. naval ships fighting against the Japanese in the Sandwich Islands, the most dangerous place in the world may be overlooked.

Great Sky Woman

Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Thirty thousand years ago, in the heart of the African continent and in the shadow of the largest freestanding mountain in the world, lived the Ibandi. For countless generations they nurtured their ancient tradition, and met survival's daily struggle with quiet faith in their gods. But when brutal intruders arrived from the south, a few brave souls dared the ultimate quest-to climb the Great Mountain, seeking answers and a way into the future. In this breathtaking blend of imagination, anthropology, and sheer storytelling magic, Steven Barnes takes us to the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro and into the realm of our own ancestors, who lived, hunted, celebrated, and died side by side with roaming herds of wild animals and great golden clouds of migrating butterflies. A people whose skin was the color and smell of the earth itself, the Ibandi formed a hierarchy based on strength of limb and spirit. In this extraordinary novel, we follow the adventures of two of the Ibandi's chosen ones: T'Cori, an abandoned girl raised by the powerful and mysterious medicine woman Stillshadow, and Frog Hopping, a boy possessing a gift that is also a curse. Though the live in different encampments, Frog and T'Cori are linked through the revered and powerful Stillshadow, who has sensed in them a destiny apart from others'. Through the years, and on their separate life paths, T'Cori's and Frog's fates entwine as an inevitable disaster approaches from the south-from the very god they worship. For as long as there have been mountain, sky, and savannah, there has been a home for the Ibandi. Now, in the face of an enemy beyond anything spoken of even in legend, they must ask their god face-to-face: Do weremain or do we depart? Great Sky Woman not only brings to life the world of prehistoric man but also shines a brilliant light on humanity itself. For here is a story of rivalries and alliances, of human fear and desire, of faith and betrayal . . . and, above all, a story of how primitive man, without words or machines, set in motion civilization's long, winding journey to the present.

Three disparate facts that will converge into one science-shattering truth. Molecular biologist Kaye Lang, a specialist in retroviruses, believes that ancient diseases encoded in the DNA of humans can again come to life. But her theory soon becomes chilling reality. For Christopher Dicken--a "virus hunter" at the Epidemic Intelligence Service--has pursued an elusive flu-like disease that strikes down expectant mothers and their offspring. The shocking link: something that has slept in our genes for millions of years is waking up. Now, as the outbreak of this terrifying disease threatens to become a deadly epidemic, Dicken and Lang, along with anthropologist Mitch Rafelson, must race against time to assemble the pieces of a puzzle only they are equipped to solve. An evolutionary puzzle that will determine the future of the human race . . . if a futureexists at all. A fiercely intelligent, utterly enthralling novel of adventure and ideas, genetics and evolution, a fast-paced thriller that is grounded in the timeless human themes of struggle, loss, and redemption, Darwin's Radio is sure to become one of the most talked-about books of the year. "From the Hardcover edition."

1824: The Arkansas War

Product : 1824: The Arkansas War
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In the newest volume of this exhilarating series, Eric Flint continues to reshape American history, imagining how a continent and its people might have taken a different path to its future. With 1824: The Arkansas War, he spins an astounding and provocative saga of heroism, battlefield action, racial conflict, and rebellion as a nation recovering from war is plunged into a dangerous era of secession. Buffered by Spanish possessions to the south and by free states and two rivers to the north, Arkansas has become a country of its own: a hybrid confederation of former slaves, Native American Cherokee and Creek clans, and white abolitionists-including one charismatic warrior who has gone from American hero to bete noire. Irish-born Patrick Driscol is building a fortune and a powerful army in the Arkansas Confederacy, inflaming pro-slavers in Washington and terrifying moderates as well. Caught in the middle is President James Monroe, the gentlemanly Virginian entering his final year in office with a demagogic House Speaker, Henry Clay, nipping at his heels and fanning the fires of war. But Driscol, whose black artillerymen smashed both the Louisiana militia in 1820 and the British in New Orleans, remains a magnet for revolution. And fault lines are erupting throughout the young republic-so that every state, every elected official, and every citizen will soon be forced to choose a side. For a country whose lifeblood is infected with the slave trade, the war of 1824 will be a bloody crisis of conscience, politics, economics, and military maneuvering that will draw in players from as far away as England. For such men as Secretary of State John Quincy Adams, Commissioner of Indian Affairs Sam Houston, charismatic war hero Andrew Jackson, and the violent abolitionist John Brown, it is a time to change history itself. Filled with fascinating insights into some of America's most intriguing historical figures, 1824: The Arkansas War confirms Eric Flint as a true master of alternate history, a novelist who brings to bear exhaustive research, remarkable intuition, and a great storyteller's natural gifts to chronicle the making of our nation as it might have been.

Inheriting the Holy Land: An American's Search for Hope in the Middle East

Product : Inheriting the Holy Land: An American's Search for Hope in the Middle East
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Writing with fierce honesty, Jennifer Miller has created an extraordinary synthesis of history, reportage, and coming-of-age memoir in Inheriting the Holy Land. Her groundbreaking perspective on the conflict is presented through interviews with young Israelis and Palestinians and conversations with some of the most influential officials involved in the Middle East, including Shimon Peres, Yasir Arafat, James Baker, Benjamin Netanyahu, Colin Powell, Ehud Barak, and Mahmoud Abbas. This book will open eyes, open hearts, and open minds. Miller grew up in an affluent suburb of Washington, D.C., surrounded by the chaotic politics of the Middle East. Her father was a U.S. State Department negotiator at the Oslo and Camp David peace summits, and dinnertime conversation in the Miller household often included discussions of the Middle Eastern conflict. When Miller joined Seeds of Peace, a program that brings Middle Eastern kids to Maine for intensive sessions of conflict resolution, her real experience with the Middle East began. As she befriended young Palestinians, Israelis, Egyptians, and Jordanians, Jennifer came to realize that their views were missing from the ongoing debate over the Holy Land. By helping these young voices be heard, she knew she could reveal something vitally new and deeply challenging about the future of this torn region. Miller, however, learned fast that it was one thing to hang out at the idyllic Seeds for Peace camp in Maine and quite another to confront young people on their own turf-in the alleys of East Jerusalem, behind the armed gates of West Bank settlements, in the teeming refugee camps of Gaza. Friendships that had blossomed in the United Stateswithered in the aftermath of yet another suicide bombing. Big-hearted teens on both sides of the conflict shocked Miller with the ferocity of their illusions and the twisted logic of their misconceptions. But she also found rays of hope in places where others had reported only despair-surprising open-mindedness among the ultra-religious, common ground shared by those who had lost loved ones to the violence, a yearning for peace amid the rubble of refugee camps and the shards of bombed cities. A deft writer, she interweaves her startlingly candid interviews with the vibrant realities of life in the streets. Just as Jennifer Miller was forced to confront her biases as an American, a Jew, a woman, and a journalist, in Inheriting the Holy Land, she similarly challenges readers to reexamine their own cherished prejudices and assumptions.

Long Spoon Lane

Description : Anne Perry's bestselling Victorian novels offer readers an elixir as addictively rich as Devonshire cream or English ale-enticing millions into a literary world almost as real as the original. While flower sellers, costermongers, shopkeepers, and hansom drivers ply their trades, the London police watch over all. Or so people believe. . . . Early one morning, Thomas Pitt, dauntless mainstay of the Special Branch, is summoned to Long Spoon Lane, where anarchists are plotting an attack. Bombs explode, destroying the homes of many poor people. After a chase, two of the culprits are captured and the leader is shot . . . but by whom? As Pitt delves into the case, he finds that there is more to the terrorism than the destructive gestures of misguided idealists. The police are running a lucrative protection racket, and clues suggest that Inspector Wetron of Bow Street is the mastermind. As the shadowy leader of the Inner Circle, Wetron is using his influence with the press to whip up fears of more attacks-and to rush a bill through Parliament that would severely curtail civil liberties. This would make him the most powerful man in the country. To defeat Wetron, Pitt finds that he must run in harness with his old enemy, Sir Charles Voisey, and the unlikely allies are joined by Pitt's clever wife, Charlotte, and her great aunt, Lady Vespasia Cumming-Gould. Can they prevail? As they strive to prevent future destruction, nothing less than the fate of the British Empire hangs in precarious balance. From the first sentence to the last, "Long Spoon Lane" is a miracle of suspense, of plot and counterplot, bluff and counterbluff, in a take-no-prisoners battle between good and evil. It is possibly the very best of all the wonderful Charlotte and Thomas Pitt novels.

Description : She likes the sudden seconds of sheer terror. The neon dreams fit perfectly with the dreams that wake her up at night: about the man she loved and lost, about the constant temptations in her life, and about the odds that inevitably she'll be in the right place at the right time to look naked, human madness in the eye. " "Welcome to the world of Susan Pulaski, an unconventional and unusually subversive Las Vegas police behaviorist who's already been canned once and has never been needed more. In the Sin City, someone is ritually murdering handpicked victims, each with dirty secrets in their past. The killer's gimmick: Not only does he leave behind parts of the victims' bodies, he also writes obscure mathematical formulas-in their blood. Pulaski doesn't have a clue what the codes mean. But she knows someone who will. Darcy O'Bannon is a twenty-six-year-old whose autistic savant skills are perfect for unraveling such mysteries as how many rivets are in the Eiffel Tower and how many Elvis impersonators there will be in the year 2020. As it turns out, innocent Darcy can also think along the arcane lines of Vegas's most savage serial killer, peering into a numerological mystery that stretches back hundreds of years. With her own life one spark away from going off the rails, her department turned against her, and the lives of those she cares most about in jeopardy, Pulaski hunts for dangerous prey in the shadow of the Strip-with herself as the perfect bait. And the closer she gets, the more terrifying and intriguing the case becomes, for the person she's tracking possesses truly ingenious powers-and a heart full of hate. The incomparable William Bernhardt brings to life America's most fascinating city and the people who police it, while he invites the reader to join one woman's fight to stay sane, stay alive, and keep a killer from making the most shocking score of all.

Osama Bin Laden has been succeeded by a generation of even deadlier terrorists who will stop at nothing in their fanatical quest to destroy the United States. Conventional security is no longer enough. Former military pilots Scott Dalton and Jackie Sullivan are the government's newest weapons--operatives so secret that their very existence is denied by the officials who hired them. Armed with the most up-to-date technology and equipment, their mission is to prevent a plan of nuclear holocaust that will begin at the Canadian border and explode in the centers of American power. They have their work cut out for them. Foremost among their foes are Saeed Shayhidi, a billionaire Iranian "businessman" and mass murderer, far more sophisticated and sadistic than Bin Laden himself; Khaliq Farkas, a mysterious and ever-elusive terrorist, bearing a barbaric grudge; and Zheng-Yen Tsung, the powerful Chinese official who may be the mastermind behind it all. From a shocking sarin attack on a legendary ocean liner to the stalking of chemical plants and oil refineries by aircraft filled with explosives, no attack is too insidious, no symbol of strength and freedom immune. Product : The Making of a Mother: Overcoming the Nine Key Challenges from Crib to Empty Nest
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : What makes a good mother? Are some women just born naturally maternal, or do mothers discover that part of themselves once they have a child? Now a renowned expert on the subject-and herself a mother of three-addresses the unspoken worries and fears that accompany motherhood and shares the reassuring message that every mother learns "on the job." Dr. Valerie Davis Raskin has worked with more than four hundred mothers in twenty years of clinical practice and has discovered that mothering is just as developmental as childhood. Dr. Raskin identifies the nine challenges facing mothers from their child's infancy to young adulthood, pivotal moments that put mothers to the test time and again-and yet from which they can emerge truly rewarded. - IDENTITY: How to gain confidence during those overwhelming first months after you've given birth or adopted, but don't yet "feel" like a mother. - UNLOVING MOMENTS: Every mother's secret guilt-learn to accept those not-so-precious moments when you don't like the child you love so dearly. - HONORING THE FATHER: Tips for helping Dad stop feeling like a third wheel and bond with his child (and receive attention from you ). - SEPARATION: How to maintain a positive outlook on your child's milestones, from the first day of preschool to packing him off to sleepaway camp. - SETTING LIMITS: How to put your foot down, even when your child kicks, screams, or cries. - IMPERFECT INSTITUTIONS: How to cope when your child does not have the best teacher or the most inspiring coach, or faces a less than fair grading system. - REVISED DREAMS: Your cute five-year-old in a pink tutu has no rhythm. Your nine-year-old cannot catch a ball. Learn to modify your dreams for your child-and follow your child's dreams instead. - ADVERSITY: You can't keep your child in a plastic bubble, but you can take a deep breath, relax, and be there for her when life gets tough. - SAYING GOODBYE: Discover the joys of loving your adult child while not living under the same roof. This wonderfully anecdotal, engaging, and accessible book is nothing less than an essential training manual for mothers of all ages. The bottom line: Just because motherhood is sometimes difficult, confusing, intense, sleepless, and frustrating, doesn't mean mothers aren't doing it right

Description : Margaret Truman, who knows where all the bodies are buried inside the Beltway, has written her most thrilling novel of suspense yet. Murder at the Opera features the popular crime-fighting couple Mac Smith and his wife, Annabel Reed-Smith, as they navigate the glitz, glamour, and grime that is Washington, D.C. It ain't over till the fat lady sings . . . but the show hasn't even started yet when a diva is found dead. The soprano in question, a petite young Asian Canadian named Charise Lee, was scarcely a star at the Washington National Opera. But when the aspiring singer is stabbed in the heart backstage during rehearsals, she suddenly takes center stage. Georgetown law professor Mac Smith thought he'd just be carrying a rapier in Tosca as a favor for his beloved Annabel, but now they're both being pressured by the panicked theater board to unmask a killer. Providing accompaniment will be former homicide detective, current P.I., and eternal opera fan Raymond Pawkins. Soon the Smiths find themselves dangerously improvising among an expanding cast of suspects with all sorts of scores to settle. CrazyBusy-the modern phenomenon of brain overload-is a national epidemic. Without intending it or understanding how it happened, we've plunged ourselves into a mad rush of activity, expecting our brains to keep track of more than they comfortably or effectively can. In fact, as Attention Deficit Disorder expert and bestselling author Edward M. Hallowell, M.D., argues in this groundbreaking new book, this brain overload has reached the point where our entire society is suffering from culturally induced ADD. CrazyBusy is not just a by-product of high-speed, globalized modern life-it has become its defining feature. BlackBerries, cell phones, and e-mail 24/7. Longer work days, escalating demands, and higher expectations at home. It all adds up to a state of constant frenzy that is sapping us of creativity, humanity, mental well-being, and the ability to focus on what truly matters. But as Dr. Hallowell argues, being crazybusy can also be an opportunity. Just as ADD can, if properly managed, become a source of ingenuity and inspiration, so the impulse to be busy can be turned to our advantage once we get in touch with our needs and take charge of how we really want to spend our time. Through quick exercises (perfect for busy people), focused advice on everything from lifestyle to time management, and examples chosen from his extensive clinical experience, Hallowell goes step-by-step through the process of unsnarling frantic lives. With CrazyBusy, we can teach ourselves to move from the F-state-frenzied, flailing, fearful, forgetful, furious-to the C-state-cool, calm, clear, consistent, curious, courteous. Dr. Hallowell has helped more than a million readers free themselves of the distractions and compulsions of ADD. Now in CrazyBusy, he offers the same sound, sane, and accessible guidance for anyone suffering from the harried pace of modern life. Description : New York Times bestselling author John Saul is a master at writing novels that chill the bones, curdle the blood, and tap into our darkest fears. He creates characters so real that you'll feel as if they're friends or family, and throws them into situations so terrifying that you won't be able to look away until you turn the final page. Now, in Faces of Fear, Saul proves that there's a fine line between perfection and madness. Fifteen-year-old Alison Shaw may not be beautiful, but she doesn't really care: She'd much rather read a good book than primp in front of a mirror anyway. But Alison's gorgeous mother, Risa, knows that beauty can be a key to success and wishes only the best for her daughter, especially when Risa marries a widowed plastic surgeon and moves Alison from Santa Monica to Bel Air. Beauty may be only skin deep, but to the denizens of Bel Air it means the world. Everywhere mother and daughter look, they are surrounded by beautiful people, many of whom have benefited from the skills of Alison's new stepfather, the charismatic Peter Dunn. Peter is certain he can turn Alison into a vision of loveliness, and Risa-drawn in by his cool confidence-is delighted. Reluctantly, Alison agrees to undergo the first procedure, and her transformation begins. But soon Alison discovers a picture of Peter's first wife. A Better View of Paradise

Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Dramatic, moving, and exquisitely written, A Better View of Paradise explores the tender bond between fathers and daughters, ponders the delicate nature of healing, and celebrates the redemptive power of forgiveness and love. Thirty-six-year-old Stevie Pollack has come into her own as a celebrated landscape architect. Her designs, famed for their evocative natural beauty, reflect her upbringing amid the splendor of Hawai'i. But when critics blast her latest efforts and her boyfriend abruptly ends their relationship, Stevie seeks solace in her roots among the dazzling flowers, and comforting traditions of the islands and their calming waters. Still, in the back of her mind, Hawai'i holds troubling memories of a childhood with Hank, her emotionally distant father, and a reserved British mother. Despite her irascible father's presence, the trip home promises Stevie a welcome departure from her trials on the mainland. But the shocking news that Hank is dying forces the pair's reunion into high gear. As father and daughter attempt to rekindle their bond, Stevie discovers sides of Hank she never knew, including family secrets that have shaped their lives. And what started as a holiday escape for the beleaguered architect becomes a chance for transformation, one as exciting as it is uncertain. Inspired by her father's insight, and energized by the attentions of an attractive local veterinarian, Stevie learns to surrender her inhibitions and seize the day.
