Beacon Fire and Shooting Star: The Literary Culture of the Liang (502-557)

Product : Beacon Fire and Shooting Star: The Literary Culture of the Liang (502-557)
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : The Liang dynasty (502-557) is one of the most brilliant and creative periods in Chinese history and one of the most underestimated and misunderstood. Under the Liang, literary activities, such as writing, editing, anthologizing, and cataloguing, were pursued on an unprecedented scale, yet the works of this era are often dismissed as "decadent" and no more than a shallow prelude to the glories of the Tang. This book is devoted to contextualizing the literary culture of this era--not only the literary works themselves but also the physical process of literary production such as the copying and transmitting of texts; activities such as book collecting, anthologizing, cataloguing, and various forms of literary scholarship; and the intricate interaction of religion, particularly Buddhism, and literature. Its aim is to explore the impact of social and political structure on the literary world.

The Politics of Ethnicity and the Crisis of the Peloponnesian League

Product : The Politics of Ethnicity and the Crisis of the Peloponnesian League
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : The crisis of Spartan power in the first half of the fourth century has been connected to Spartan inability to manage the hegemony built on the ruins of the Athenian Empire, or interpreted as a result of the unexpected annihilation of the Spartan army by the Boeotians at Leuktra. The present book offers a new perspective, suggesting that the crisis that finally brought down Sparta was in important ways a result of centrifugal impulses within the Peloponnesian League, accompanied by a general awakening of ethnicity in various areas of the Peloponnese. A series of regional case studies is combined with thematic contributions focusing on topics such as the relationship of religious cults and ethnicity and of democracy and ethnicity, the use of archaeological evidence for ethnic phenomena, and comparative approaches based on social anthropology.

Language and Minority Rights: Ethnicity, Nationalism and the Politics of Language

Product : Language and Minority Rights: Ethnicity, Nationalism and the Politics of Language
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : The first edition of Language and Minority Rights, an outstanding interdisciplinary analysis of the questions and issues concerning minority language rights in modern nation-states, is now regarded as a key benchmark in the field of language rights and language policy, drawing together debates on language from widely different academic fields, including the sociology of language, ethnicity and nationalism, sociolinguistics, social and political theory, education, history and law, and illustrating these debates via a wealth of different national contexts and examples. The 2nd edition of this provocative and groundbreaking book is a timely and useful revision of its core arguments and examples, addressing new theoretical and empirical developments since its initial publication. Stephen Maya (TM)s basic position, however, remains unchanged a " he argues for a non-essentialist understanding of language rights, while at the same time outlining why language rights are both necessary and legitimate, particularly for minority groups. This volume is essential reading for students, teachers and researchers in the sociology of language, sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, language policy and planning, sociology, politics, and education.

Reconfiguring the World: Nature, God, and Human Understanding from the Middle Ages to Early Modern Europe

Product : Reconfiguring the World: Nature, God, and Human Understanding from the Middle Ages to Early Modern Europe
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Change in human understanding of the natural world during the early modern period marks one of the most important episodes in intellectual history. This era is often referred to as the scientific revolution, but recent scholarship has challenged traditional accounts. Here, in Reconfiguring the World, Margaret J. Osler treats the development of the sciences in Europe from the early sixteenth to the late seventeenth centuries as a complex and multifaceted process. The worldview embedded in modern science is a relatively recent development. Osler aims to convey a nuanced understanding of how the natural world looked to early modern thinkers such as Galileo, Descartes, Boyle, and Newton. She describes investigation and understanding of the natural world in terms that the thinkers themselves would have used. Tracing the views of the natural world to their biblical, Greek, and Arabic sources, Osler demonstrates the impact of the Renaissance recovery of ancient texts, printing, the Protestant Reformation, and the exploration of the New World. She shows how the traditional disciplinary boundaries established by Aristotle changed dramatically during this period and finds the tensions of science and religion expressed as differences between natural philosophy and theology. Far from a triumphalist account, Osler's story includes false starts and dead ends. Ultimately, she shows how a few gifted students of nature changed the way we see ourselves and the universe.

Seeing Through Music: Gender and Modernism in Classic Hollywood Film Scores

Product : Seeing Through Music: Gender and Modernism in Classic Hollywood Film Scores
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Hollywood film music is often mocked as a disreputably 'applied' branch of the art of composition that lacks both the seriousness and the quality of the classical or late-romantic concert and operatic music from which it derives. Its composers in the 1930s and '40s were themselves often scornful of it and aspired to produce more 'serious' works that would enhance their artistic reputation. In fact the criticism of film music as slavishly descriptive or manipulatively over-emotional has a history that is older than film - it had even been directed at the relatively popular operatic and concert music written by some of the emigre Hollywood composers themselves before they had left Europe. There, as subsequently in America, such criticism was promoted by the developing project of Modernism, whose often high-minded opposition to mass culture used polarizing language that drew, intentionally or not, upon that of gender difference. Regressive, late-romantic music, the old argument ran, was - as women were believed to be - emotional, irrational, and lacking in logic. This book seeks to level the critical playing field between film music and 'serious music', reflecting upon gender-related ideas about music and modernism as much as about film. Peter Franklin broaches the possibility of a history of twentieth-century music that would include, rather than marginalize, film music - and, indeed, the scores of a number of the major Hollywood movies discussed here, like The Bride of Frankenstein, King Kong, Rebecca, Gone With The Wind, Citizen Kane and Psycho. In doing so, he brings more detailed music-historical knowledge to bear upon cinema music, often discussed as a unique and special product of film, and also offers conclusions about the problematic aspects of musical modernism and some arguably liberating aspects of 'late-romanticism'.

Remembering Sofya Kovalevskaya

Product : Remembering Sofya Kovalevskaya

Description : Sofia Kovalevskaya was a brilliant and determined young Russian woman of the 19th century who wanted to become a mathematician and who succeeded, in often difficult circumstances, in becoming arguably the first woman to have a professional university career in the way we understand it today. This memoir, written by a mathematician who specialises in symplectic geometry and integrable systems, is a personal exploration of the life, the writings and the mathematical achievements of a remarkable woman. It emphasises the originality of Kovalevskaya 's work and assesses her legacy and reputation as a mathematician and scientist. Her ideas are explained in a way that is accessible to a general audience, with diagrams, marginal notes and commentary to help explain the mathematical concepts and provide context. This fascinating book, which also examines Kovalevskaya 's love of literature, will be of interest to historians looking for a treatment of the mathematics, and those doing feminist or gender studies.

Susan Glaspell: Her Life and Times

Product : Susan Glaspell: Her Life and Times
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Trifles--a play exploring what happens when women unite against forces that deny them a voice and identity--has become an international classic, as powerful and relevant today as it was in the summer of 1916, when it was first staged by vacationing friends in a converted fishing wharf in Provincetown,Massachusetts. This biography is the story of its author, Susan Glaspell, and the forces that propelled her from her Midwest birthplace in Davenport, Iowa to Greenwich Village during its glory days, where she established herself as a central figure in the avant-garde community and became the first modern American woman playwright. Glaspell's life is a feminist tale of pioneering in which she broke new ground for women. A journalist by age eighteen, she worked her way through university as a news reporter and became a leading novelist of the period. A co-founder of many of Greenwich Village's important avant-garde institutions, she was a close friend of its leading figures, including Eugene O'Neill. She and O'Neill were equally credited with launching a new type of indigenous drama, hers addressing such pressing topics as suffrage, birth control, female sexuality, marriage equality, socialism, and pacifism. In 1931 she won the Pulitzer Prize for drama. "Out there--lies all that's not been touched--lies life that waits," Claire Archer says in The Verge, Glaspell's most experimental play. This biography is the exciting and inspiring story of Glaspell's personal exploration of the same terrain

The Churches of Christ

Product : The Churches of Christ
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : This volume tells the story of the Churches of Christ, one of three major denominations that emerged in the United States from a religious movement led by Alexander Campbell and Barton W. Stone in the early nineteenth century. Beginning as an effort to provide a basis on which all Christians in America could unite, the leaders of the movement relied on the faith and practice of the primitive church. Ironically, this unity movement eventually divided precisely along the lines of its original agenda, as the Churches of Christ rallied around the restorationist banner while the Disciples of Christ gathered around the ecumenical cause. Yet, having begun as a countercultural sect, the Churches of Christ emerged in the twentieth century as a culture-affirming denomination. This brief history, together with biographical sketches of major leaders, provides a complete overview of the denomination in America. The book begins with a concise yet detailed history of the denomination's beginnings in the early nineteenth century. Tracing the influence of such leaders as Stone and Campbell, the authors chronicle the triumphs and conflicts of the denomination through the nineteenth century and its reemergence and renewal in the twentieth century. The biographical dictionary of leaders in the Churches of Christ rounds out the second half of the book, and a chronology of important events in the history of the denomination offers a quick reference guide. A detailed bibliographic essay concludes the book and points readers to further readings about the Churches of Christ.

Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : The Karaites, a small Jewish sect that arose twelve centuries ago and still exists today, was at one time the most outspoken and productive schismatic division in Judaism. The Karaites contributed much to the Jewish literature of the Middle Ages, for they developed their own corpus of theological dogmas, liturgy, juristic exegesis, metaphysical concepts, secular poetry, apologetics, and sermons. This anthology-the first of its kind in any language of the West-provides excerpts from the early Karaite literature (down to about the year 1500) representing the full range of their thought and belief. All extracts have been translated directly from Arabic, Aramaic, and Hebrew original sources. "This book marks the first attempt in any language to present a chronological exposition of seven centuries of evolution of this interesting Jewish sect through a selection of excerpts from the writings of its spokesmen. . . . A] pioneering achievement."-Zvi Ankori, Jewish Social Studies "Will be of real interest. . . to historians of religion, sociologists of religion, students of Judaism, Talmudic scholars, students of comparative religious law, and scholars interested in the relation between Islam and Judaism in the Middle Ages."-Maurice S. Fred Macmurray Hb

Product : Fred Macmurray Hb
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Hardback edition. Fred MacMurray was one of the most durable stars in motion picture history. Fred arrived in Hollywood in 1934 and within a year he was one of the top leading men in the movie industry. He was the leading actor or one of the leads in films through 1973 when Walt Disney Studios released his final starring role in a motion picture, Charley and the Angel. Thirty-nine years - five separate decades. Few stars have equaled that distinction. Of course every star career has its peaks and valleys. The initial peak of Fred';s stardom was from his days as a Paramount leading man, beginning in 1935 and running roughly until the end of the Second World War. Like many aging stars, the post-war years were a mixed bag for Fred. Public tastes were changing and the kind of frothy, romantic comedies which had been his forte were going out of fashion. But he persevered and continued to do leading roles in a variety of pictures and from time to time found a film which registered strongly with film audiences and critics alike, such as The Egg and I (1947), and especially The Caine Mutiny (1954). By the mid 1950s Fred was appearing, increasingly, in that favorite genre of the aging leading man - the western film. Eight of ten films he made between 1955 and 1960 were westerns, not Fred's favorite genre. But they did keep his name before the public. Then in 1959, Fred began the second peak of his career thanks to Walt Disney, who cast Fred in his studios first live action comedy film, The Shaggy Dog. Incredibly this film which was made for under $1 million became the third biggest box office hit of that year, and Fred found a new audience. Over the next several years, Fred starred in a series of hugely popular family films for the Walt Disney Studios. Then in 1960, Fred did something that solidified his new family friendly image. He accepted the lead in a new television series called My Three Sons. For the next twelve years he played Steve Douglas, a widower with three rambunctious sons. Fred became THE quintessential father figure for a new generation of kids. In accepting My Three Sons Fred succeeded at something that few film actors had achieved up to that time. He became a star in both television and motion pictures. Look at it this way. In 1951 when Lucille Ball began I Love Lucy she had already spent nearly two decades as a motion picture actress, but she never had the kind of movie fame that Fred MacMurray had achieved when he became a television star. Loretta Young began a long running anthology series in 1953, and had been a popular, and Academy Award winning, movie actress prior to that, but when she began on television her days as a film actress were over. When Fred began doing My Three Sons in 1960, he was enjoying a rejuvenated film career thanks to the Disney films and his superb performance in Billy Wilder's hugely popular and Academy Award winning The Apartment. Fred was simultaneously enjoying popularity on both the big and small screens

Description : Trafficking in persons, particularly the trafficking of women into sexual servitude (sex trafficking) has generated much attention over the past decade. This book provides a critical examination of the international and national frameworks developed to respond to this issue - focused both on the design of policy responses and their implementation. Uniquely it brings together, and brings to life, the voices of policymakers, non-government agencies and trafficked women. The analysis is grounded in rich empirical work and research in Europe, Asia, Australia and North America This book examines how sex trafficking has been mobilized within anti-trafficking policies across the globe and offers a close examination of the dominant international framework, drawing upon a rich and diverse set of case studies: Australia, Serbia and Thailand. This analysis draws upon over100 interviews with trafficking 'experts' across the three nations-including policymakers, police, immigration authorities, socialworkers, lawyers, UN agencies, local and international NGOs, activists. Uncle Sam in Barbary: A Diplomatic History

Product : Uncle Sam in Barbary: A Diplomatic History
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : This book tells the story of America's first hostage crisis, which began in 1785 with the capture of two American ships off the coast of Portugal, and provides the intriguing details of the diplomacy mobilized to address the crisis. The incident constituted America's first challenge from the Muslim world and led to the creation of the U.S. Navy and to an American naval presence in the Mediterranean, which has continued intermittently to the present. The Algerine corsairs (also known as the Barbary pirates), who seized the American seamen, played by the strange set of rules that operated 200 years ago along the Barbary Coast. Interested in booty and ransom money, they routinely extorted "tribute" from merchant ships that were not protected by treaty or navies. With no navy of its own and no longer covered by British treaties after the Revolutionary War, the United States eventually had to buy its way to peace with the Barbary powers. By the time the episode was resolved in 1796, American seamen had spent eleven years as prisoners in Algiers and the U.S. had paid close to a million dollars in cash and kind to ransom 103 surviving captives from 13 ships. However, from 1801 to 1805, the U.S. was again at war with Tripoli over the tribute demanded--the struggle celebrated in the opening lines of the Marine Corps Hymn. Although the popular slogan at the time was "Millions for defense, not one cent for tribute," the U.S. eventually paid $60,000 for a treaty with Tripoli. "Uncle Sam in Barbary" is based on dispatches, personal papers, and the official communications of those involved, including unpublished Italian and Tunisian documents. Richard Parker puts flesh on the bare bones of thestandard narrative of this crisis, bringing to life the fate and identity of the American captives as well as the leaders in Algiers and clarifying for the first time the unhelpful roles played by the British and French. This history offers insights for today about the roles of diplomacy and military force in international relations. A Gentleman and a Scholar: Memoir of James P. Boyce

Product : A Gentleman and a Scholar: Memoir of James P. Boyce
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : "Solid Ground continues to publish books that are proven in their positive effect for the health of the church. This republication of Broadus's classic memoir of his beloved friend and colleague, James P. Boyce, has the potential to instruct and convict. Boyce loved theology. He committed his life to its instruction and particularly to the conserving of historic confessional, Calvinistic Baptist witness. His students loved, admired, and respected him for this and Broadus communicates both Boyce's passion and his students' appreciation clearly. Boyce loved preaching. None can evaluate his adeptness at it better than Broadus. Boyce had enough courage and clear conviction to protect the theological foundation of the school in the face of impending theological decline. Broadus tells this gripping story with manliness and poignancy. All lovers of truth within all evangelical denominations should welcome enthusiastically the appearance of this old book with a new and appropriate title: A Gentleman and a Scholar. Making these memories a part of our own experience can only uplift us and challenge us to be more attentive to the glory of God in our sphere of calling." - Tom J. Nettles

Domestic Space in Classical Antiquity

Product : Domestic Space in Classical Antiquity
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Housing is shaped by culturally-specific expectations about the kinds of architecture and decoration that are appropriate; about how and where different activities should be carried out; and by and with whom. It is those expectations, and the wider social and cultural systems of which they are a part, that are explored in this volume. At the same time, the book as a whole argues two larger points: first, that while houses, households and families have in recent years become increasingly important as objects of inquiry in Greek and Roman contexts, their potential as objects of inquiry has yet to be fully realised; second, that greater weight and independence should be given to material culture as a source for studying ancient history.

Description : The myth of Anzac has been one of Australia's most enduring. The belief in the superior fighting qualities of Australian soldiers in the First World War is part of national consciousness and the much touted "special" relationship of Britain and Australia during the War accepted as fact. This provocative and wide ranging book is a reassessment of Australia's role in World War I and its relations--military, economic, political and psychological--with Britain. Political Ideology in the Arab World: Accommodation and Transformation

Product : Political Ideology in the Arab World: Accommodation and Transformation
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Arab nationalism and Islamism have been the two most potent ideological forces in the Arab region across the twentieth century. Over the last two decades, however, an accommodation of sorts has been developing between liberals, socialists and Islamists, to protest unpopular foreign and domestic policies, such as those aimed at cooperation with Israel or the war in Iraq. By examining the writings of Arab nationalist, socialist and Islamist intellectuals, and through numerous interviews with political participants from different persuasions, Michaelle Browers traces these developments from the 'Arab age of ideology', as it has been called, through an 'age of ideological transformation', demonstrating clearly how the recent flow of ideas from one group to another have their roots in the past. Political Ideology in the Arab World assesses the impact of ideological changes on Egypt's Kifaya Enough ] movement and Yemen's joint meeting parties.

Defense Acquisition Management

Product : Defense Acquisition Management
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : "Defense Acquisition Management" is a "reader," that is, it is a collection of articles on various aspects of Defense Acquisition Management. It was prepared by the faculty of the International Defense Acquisition Resource Management (IDARM) program, a division of the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School's School of International Graduate Studies. It is the initiative of Dr. Elisabeth Wright, the IDARM Program Manager. The name for the IDARM program was not chosen without careful thought. The program is intended for an international audience, and therefore focuses on the practices of the U.S. system only where it employs or embodies a "best practice" that can have universal application. Acquisition resource management describes the program's integrated approach to defense program management, defense contracting, and defense logistics management. The chapters in this book encompass the core components of the IDARM Program curriculum: acquisition management, which includes systems engineering and, within it, requirements determination and logistical planning; the negotiation of contracts and agreements, as well as the settlement of disputes; and procurement and contracting processes. It also includes two chapters on specialized subjects in defense acquisition: research and development, and U.S. weapons sales to foreign governments.

Education an 'Impossible Profession'?: Psychoanalytic Explorations of Learning and Classrooms

Product : Education an 'Impossible Profession'?: Psychoanalytic Explorations of Learning and Classrooms
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : This book will provide a way of using psychoanalytic psychologies to think about some of the processes and experiences of learning and teaching. It will provide a basic introduction to a range of psychoanalytic theorists focussing on the ways in which their work might be useful within education. Grounded in the classroom experiences of children and teachers, it will be written in an accessible style drawing on the author's own research and making academic use of primary and secondary sources. Building on the traditions of critical psychologies, it will both provide a critique of the traditional, cognitive psychologies drawn on in educational texts and policy, and provide an introduction to a variety of psychoanalytic theories that might enable educators to consider some of the less rational and conscious processes that pervade learning and teaching contexts. While it will be set in schools it is intended that the discussion will also be useful for those working in other educational settings. Overall, this book aims to provide a grounded and contextualised introduction to psychoanalytic theories. Those that will be focused on have been chosen to provide a variety of ways of conceptualising pedagogic events and relationships. Rather than suggesting that psychoanalysis is monolithic, it will explore the similarities and differences that exist between the theories. All discussion of theory will take place in the context of real situations that arise in classrooms exemplified by data from research. Its more specific objectives are to:
    • conceptualise classroom experiences through a critique of technical/rationalist policies and an exploration of the work the policy metaphors do;
    • draw on empirical research (particularly observation and interview data) to provide vivid and grounded illustrative examples of common classroom experiences;
    • use psychoanalytic theories to provide theoretical lenses with which to illuminate different common classroom experiences and to begin to conceptualise and understand these.

Cuban Confederate Colonel

Product : Cuban Confederate Colonel
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Cuban Confederate Colonel tells the story of a revolutionary who figured prominently in both his native country's struggle against Spain and the Confederacy's fight for secession. Immortalized as the first Cuban to shed blood in the effort to oust the Spanish, Ambrosio Jos Gonzales (1818-1893) placed himself in the center of hostilities in both his homeland and in the United States. In this biography Antonio Rafael de la Cova examines the Cuban filibuster movement of the 1840s and 1850s, the American Civil War, and Southern Reconstruction from Gonzales's unusual perspective as both a Cuban and Confederate rebel. In doing so, de la Cova sheds new light on the connections between Southern and Cuban society, the workings of coastal defenses during the Civil War, and the vicissitudes of Reconstruction for a Cuban expatriate. With the failure of the 1854 filibuster attempts, Gonzales settled in the United States and married into South Carolina's prominent Elliott family. The author traces Gonzales's significant role in Confederate coastal defenses, his costly feud with Jefferson Davis, and his finest hour as a Confederate-as artillery commander at the battle of Honey Hill. Following the war, the colonel pursued a variety of vocations, all of which were marginally successful, but like many others he never provided the security he sought for his extended family. De la Cova points out that while Gonzales's connections to Cuba's economy may have made his postwar entrepreneurial endeavors distinctive, his efforts were similar to those of other formerly wealthy Southerners who sought to recover their estates and social status.

Eugenics and Modernization in Interwar Romania

Product : Eugenics and Modernization in Interwar Romania
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Eugenics movements gained momentum throughout Eastern Europe between World Wars I and II. Maria Bucur demonstrates that the importance of the eugenics movement in Romania rests not so much in the contributions made to the study of science as in the realm of nationalist ideology and social policy making. The notion that the quality and quantity of the human species could and should be controlled manifested itself through social engineering projects ranging from reshaping gender roles and isolating ethnic undesirables to introducing broad public health measures and educational reform. Romanian eugenicists sought to control such modernization processes as urbanization and industrialization without curbing them, yet they also embraced attitudes more typically identified with anti-modernists in Romanian politics and culture. Bucur is the first historian to explore the role of eugenics as a response to the challenges of nation- and state-building in Eastern Europe. She presents a balanced assessment of the interwar eugenics movement's success and failures and identifies connections and discontinuities between the movement and the post-war communist regime.

A Perfect Picture of Hell: Eyewitness Accounts by Civil War Prisoners from the 12th Iowa

Product : A Perfect Picture of Hell: Eyewitness Accounts by Civil War Prisoners from the 12th Iowa
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : From the shooting of an unarmed prisoner at Montgomery, Alabama, to a successful escape from Belle Isle, from the swelling floodwaters overtaking Cahaba Prison to the inferno that finally engulfed Andersonville, A Perfect Picture of Hell is a collection of harrowing narratives by soldiers from the 12th Iowa Infantry who survived imprisonment in the South during the Civil War. Editors Ted Genoways and Hugh Genoways have collected the soldiers' startling accounts from diaries, letters, speeches, newspaper articles, and remembrances. Arranged chronologically, the eyewitness descriptions of the battles of Shiloh, Corinth, Jackson, and Tupelo, together with accompanying accounts of nearly every famous Confederate prison, create a shared vision of life in Civil War prisons as palpable and immediate as they are historically valuable. Captured four times during the course of the war, the 12th Iowa created narratives that reveal a picture of the changing southern prison system as the Confederacy grew ever weaker and illustrate the growing animosity many southerners felt for the Union soldiers. In brief introductions to each battle, the editors highlight the 12th Iowa's activities in the months between imprisonments, providing a unique backdrop to the soldiers' accounts.

Hasidism Reappraised

Product : Hasidism Reappraised
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Hasidism has been a seminal force and source of controversy in the Jewish world since its inception in the second half of the eighteenth century. Indeed, almost every ideological trend that has made itself felt among Jews since that time-from Zionism and Orthodoxy to contemporary Jewish feminism and movements within the yeshiva world-has claimed to have derived some inspiration from this vibrant movement. While this is sure testimony to its vitality and originality, it has also given rise to many misconceptions as to what hasidism is about. This major work, the first comprehensive critical study of hasidism in English, offers a wide-ranging treatment of the subject in all its aspects by what is effectively the entire present generation of scholars working in the field. With contributions ranging from the history of theology and of ideas through social and economic history to contemporary sociology, Hasidism Reappraised encompasses a complete field of modern scholarship in a discipline that is central to the understanding of modern Jewish history and the contemporary Jewish world. The twenty-eight authors who have contributed to the main body of the book are almost without exception established scholars with international reputations. The volume as a whole is dedicated to the memory of Joseph Weiss, and its opening section assesses his contribution to the study of hasidism in the context of his relationship with Gershom Scholem and Scholem's long-standing influence on the field. The remaining contributions are arranged thematically under seven headings: the social history of hasidism; the social functions of mystical ideals in the hasidic movement; distinctive outlooks and schools of thought within hasidism; the hasidic tale; the history of hasidic historiography; contemporary hasidism; and the present state of research on hasidism. The book also incorporates an extensive introduction that places the various articles in their intellectual context, as well as a bibliography of hasidic sources and contemporary scholarly literature.Hasidism Reappraised shows an intellectual world at an important juncture in its development and points to the direction in which scholarly study of hasidism is likely to develop in the years to come.Contributors: Jacob Barnai, Israel Bartal, Joseph Dan, Rachel Elior, Immanuel Etkes, Shmuel Ettinger, Morris M. Description : "The originality of "Velvet Jihad" is in its bringing together a huge amount of data on various aspects of Muslim women's lives from all over the Muslim world. Shirazi challenges the stereotypes that attribute 'exceptionality' to Islam."--Shahla Haeri, Boston UniversityThere are numerous conflicts ensuing in the Middle East, but not all are being fought with rockets and rifles. While the Internet has proven invaluable to those who wish to uphold a patriarchal society and spread the message of Islamic fundamentalism, Muslim women have used the Web to build a transnational community intent on growing women's rights in the Middle East. There is a large disparity between a Muslim woman's role according to the Qur'an and her role as some corners of Muslim society have interpreted it. In "Velvet Jihad" Faegheh Shirazi reveals the creative strategies Muslim women have adopted to quietly fight against those who would limit their growing rights.Shirazi examines issues that are important to all women, from routine matters such as daily hygiene and clothing to controversial subjects like abortion, birth control, and virginity. As a woman with linguistic expertise and extensive life experience in both Western and Middle Eastern cultures, she is uniquely positioned as an objective observer and reporter of changes and challenges facing Muslim women globally.

Description : In "The Ancestry of David Bracewell, " Carey Bracewell describes the fourteen-generation lineage traced from Edmund Bracewell, who was born in Grantham, Lincolnshire, England, c. 1510, to Carey's son, David Bracewell, who was born in Texas in 1964. He outlines the career of the first American Bracewell, the Reverend Robert Bracewell (1611-1668), a Londoner, Oxford graduate, and "Cavalier"-one who was invited to Virginia to take charge of St. Luke's Church, now a national historic landmark.Following the lead of the Reverend Bracewell, Carey Bracewell explains how each successive generation has faithfully emulated his example of pioneering religious leadership. More than just a recitation of genealogical lineage, this family history tells the fascinating story of how the Bracewell men and women struggled and brought Christianity to the wilds of Tennessee, southern Illinois, Arkansas, and Texas. Among their many lasting accomplishments, one Bracewell ancestor, Richard Brazil, founded the oldest Baptist church in Arkansas. Bracewell published a genealogical journal on the Bracewell family and started the Braswell DNA Project. He was the first to discover the DNA profile that traces the family back to one man who lived in Bracewell, Yorkshire, in the late Middle Ages.

Modernism's Body: Sex, Culture, and Joyce

Product : Modernism's Body: Sex, Culture, and Joyce
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In this provocative study, distinguished scholar Christine Froula argues that James Joyce used his artist-figures' suffering, transgressions, resistance, masquerade, parody, creativity, and play to turn the perversity often laid at his door into a daring critique of his culture. A departure from earlier feminist views of Joyce as misogynist, patriarchal, masochistic, or an inventor of "ecriture feminine, Modernism's Body" allies Joyce's arduous effort to translate his culture's unconscious knowledge into consciousness and conscience with the revolutionary energies of feminism and psychoanalysis. Froula contends that Joyce retrieves from repression certain psychodynamics of masculinity that Freud and Lacan leave buried -- particularly the profound and far-reaching effects of the son's early identification with the mother. Rethinking Lacan's view of Joyce as a cultural "symptom," she shows how Joyce fashions deliberately symptomatic performances of himself as Daedalus, Adam and Eve, the Virgin Mary, Shakespeare, Penelope, and other Western icons and parlays them into a powerful diagnosis of social and cultural institutions. At once urgently critical and deeply sympathetic to its subject, "Modernism's Body" puts Joyce's radical analysis of masculinity in challenging dialogue with psychoanalysis, feminism, and narrative theory. Its tour-de-force interpretations show how Joyce probes the authority over sexuality and gender wielded by church and state, the marriage system, Nighttown's underworld of phantasmic mother/whores, and the symbolic estates of arts and letters as he excavates the collective conscience to forge it anew.

Border Fetishisms: Material Objects in Unstable Spaces

Product : Border Fetishisms: Material Objects in Unstable Spaces
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : The essays in "Border Fetishisms" explore the cultural, commercial, political and erotic dimensions that distinguish fetish formations in fractured colonial and postcolonial spaces. Spanning such topics as Surinamese conversion to Christianity to shoplifting in Georgian England, to face the fetish, the contributors neither demagicalize the fetish nor normalize the commodity. Instead, they call for the inclusion of material things -- as fetishes or not -- within the experience of human sufferings and joy. Contributors: Robert J. Foster, Webb Keane, Susan Leg6 ne, Annelies Moors, Peter Pels, William Pietz, Adela Pinch, Patricia Spyer, Peter Stallybrass, Michael Taussig.

Inheriting the Past: The Making of Arthur C. Parker and Indigenous Archaeology

Product : Inheriting the Past: The Making of Arthur C. Parker and Indigenous Archaeology
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In recent years, archaeologists and Native American communities have struggled to find common ground even though more than a century ago a man of Seneca descent raised on New Yorkas Cattaraugus Reservation, Arthur C. Parker, joined the ranks of professional archaeology. Until now, Parkeras life and legacy as the first Native American archaeologist have been neither closely studied nor widely recognized. At a time when heated debates about the control of Native American heritage have come to dominate archaeology, Parkeras experiences form a singular lens to view the fieldas tangled history and current predicaments with Indigenous peoples. In Inheriting the Past, Chip Colwell-Chanthaphonh examines Parkeras winding career path and asks why it has taken generations for Native peoples to follow in his footsteps. Closely tracing Parkeras life through extensive archival research, Colwell-Chanthaphonh explores how Parker crafted a professional identity and negotiated dilemmas arising from questions of privilege, ownership, authorship, and public participation. How Parker, as well as the discipline more broadly, chose to address the conflict between Native American rights and the pursuit of scientific discovery ultimately helped form archaeologyas moral community. Parkeras rise in archaeology just as the field was taking shape demonstrates that Native Americans could have found a place in the scholarly pursuit of the past years ago and altered its trajectory. Instead, it has taken more than a century to articulate the promise of an Indigenous archaeologyaan archaeological practice carried out by, for, and with Native peoples. As the current generation of researchers explores new possibilities of inclusiveness, Parkeras struggles and successes serve as a singular reference point to reflect on archaeologyas history and its future.

Industrial Work and Life: An Anthropological Reader

Product : Industrial Work and Life: An Anthropological Reader
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : "Industrial Work and Life: An Anthropological Reader" is a comprehensive anthropological overview of industrialisation in both Western and non-Western societies. Based on contemporary and historical ethnographic material, the book unpacks the 'world of industry' in the context of the shop floor, the family, and the city, revealing the rich social and political texture underpinning economic development. It also provides a critical discussion of the assumptions that inform much of the social science literature on industrialization and industrial 'modernity.' The reader is divided into four thematic sections, each with a clear and informative introduction: historical development of industrial capitalism; shopfloor organization; the relationships between the workplace and the home; the teleology of industrial 'modernity' and working-class consciousness. With readings by key writers from a range of backgrounds and disciplines, "Industrial Work and Life" is the essential introduction to the study of industrialisation in different societies. It will appeal to students across a wide range of subjects including: anthropology, comparative sociology, social history, development studies, industrial relations and management studies.

The Godless Delusion: Dawkins and the Limits of Human Sight

Product : The Godless Delusion: Dawkins and the Limits of Human Sight
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In a recent work Richard Dawkins posed an immense challenge to theology by arguing on scientific grounds that the existence of God is so improbable that it can be safely dismissed as a delusion. This work responds to the challenge by examining the arguments put forward by Dawkins and subjecting them to critique in the light of Christian faith. The critique probes some of the assumptions underlying scientific endeavours about the nature of reality and it brings to the surface the question of how meaning, truth and freedom are properly to be understood. The work goes on to present a theological understanding of these realities in the light of Christian beliefs in God, in Jesus Christ, in creation and in redemption. Far from denying the importance of scientific endeavours and discoveries, this approach seeks to provide a framework in which they can be meaningfully situated, for the betterment of humanity as a whole.

Delivering Development: Globalization's Shoreline and the Road to a Sustainable Future

Product : Delivering Development: Globalization's Shoreline and the Road to a Sustainable Future
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In "Delivering Development," author Edward Carr calls into question the very universal, unquestioned assumptions about globalization, development, and environmental change that undergird much of development and economic policy. Here he demonstrates how commonly held beliefs about globalization and development have failed the global poor. Over his 13 years of working along what he calls "globalization's shoreline," a world region buffeted by the economic, political, and environmental decisions of those living in wealthier places, Carr has concluded that most experts misunderstand what they are trying to fix, and cannot tell if they are fixing it. "Delivering Development" is an eye opening, account that compels the reader to question conventional wisdom, redefines what assistance to the developing world really means, and explores alternative ways of achieving meaningful, enduring improvements to human well-being . Edward R. Carr is Associate Professor in the Department of Geography at the University of South Carolina. He is also the climate change adaptation coordinator for the Bureau for Democracy, Conflict and Humanitarian Assistance at the United States Agency for International Development. For more than 13 years he has worked in rural sub-Saharan Africa on issues of globalization, development and environmental change, living among and working with the poorest of the poor. He is the author of more than 30 publications on issues of development, adaptation to climate change, and the changing global environment. He has served as a lead author of two global environmental assessments (the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment and UNEP's Fourth Global Environment Outlook), and is the review editor for a chapter of the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report. He has been awarded a Science and Technology Policy Fellowship from the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, and a Mellon Fellowship in the Humanities from the Woodrow Wilson Foundation.

South Asian Resistances in Britain, 1858 - 1947

Product : South Asian Resistances in Britain, 1858 - 1947
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : This volume offers an alternative way of conceiving the history of Britain by excavating and exploring the numerous ways in which South Asians in Britain engaged in radical discourse and political activism from 1858 to 1947, before their more permanent migration and settlement. The book focuses on a tumultuous period of resistance against the backdrop of high imperialism under the reign of Victoria, through the turmoil of two World Wars and Partition in 1947. As well as addressing resistances against empire and hierarchies of race, the authors investigate how South Asians in Britain mobilized to campaign for women's suffrage (the Indian princess Sophia Duleep Singh), for example, or for an international socialism (the Communist MP Shapurji Saklatvala), thereby contributing to and complicating notions of freedom, equality and justice. This volume reframes these pioneers as social and political agents and activists and shows how Britain's contemporary multicultural society is rooted in their mobilization for equality of citizenship.

Robust Multivariable Control of Aerospace Systems

Product : Robust Multivariable Control of Aerospace Systems
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Classical design and analysis techniques, many of which date back to the 1950's, are still predominantly used in the aerospace industry for the design and analysis of automatic flight control and aero-engine control systems. The continued success and popularity of these techniques is particularly impressive considering the radical advances in aircraft and spacecraft design and avionics technology made over this period. Clearly, an understanding of both the advantages and limitations of these methods is essential in order to properly evaluate the likely usefulness of more modern techniques for the design and analysis of aerospace control systems. One of the themes of this book is that the multivariable robust control methods it describes are logical and natural extensions of the more classical methods, and not replacements for them. It is assumed that readers of this publication are already familiar with classical flight control techniques. Emphasis is on the philosophy, advantages and limitations of the classical approach to flight control system design and analysis. Abstracted in Inspec

Crime, Culture & Violence: Understanding How Masculinity and Identity Shapes Offending

Product : Crime, Culture & Violence: Understanding How Masculinity and Identity Shapes Offending
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : From prison interviews with violent offenders and a wealth of experience and research, psychologist Dr Katie Seidler explores the complex interaction between crime and culture. Featuring the voices of the offenders themselves, 15 convicted adult male violent offenders from various ethnic cultural communities explain their understanding, motivations and rationalisations for their actions and how these relate to questions of identity, community and responsibility within their cultural experience and values. In challenging current criminological theory, Dr Seidler suggests that offenders from group-oriented (collectivist) cultures offend for group-oriented reasons, whereas those from cultures prioritising individualism offend for individual reasons. This more nuanced understanding of crime and criminals within the context of culture adds significantly both to criminological theory, as well as providing suggestions for improvements to policing and offender management and rehabilitation within the criminal justice system.

Critique of Violence: Between Poststructuralism and Critical Theory

Product : Critique of Violence: Between Poststructuralism and Critical Theory
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Critique of Violence is a highly original and lucid investigation of the heated controversy between poststructuralism and critical theory. Leading theorist Beatrice Hanssen uses Walter Benjamin's essay 'Critique of Violence' as a guide to analyse the contentious debate, shifting the emphasis from struggle to dialogue between the two parties. Regarding the questions of critique and violence as the major meeting points between both traditions, Hanssen positions herself between the two in an effort to investigate what critical theory and poststructuralism have to offer each other. In the course of doing so, she assembles imaginative new readings of Benjamin, Arendt, Fanon and Foucault, and incisively explores the politics of recognition, the violence of language, and the future of feminist theory. This groundbreaking book will be essential reading for all students of continental philosophy, political theory, social studies and comparative literature. Description : "Early Polemical Writings" covers the young Kierkegaard's works from 1834 through 1838. His authorship begins, as it was destined to end, with polemic. Kierkegaard's first published article touches on the theme of women's emancipation, and the other articles from his student years deal with freedom of the press. Modern readers can see the seeds of Kierkegaard's future career these early pieces. In "From the Papers of One Still Living," his review of Hans Christian Andersen's novel "Only a Fiddler," Kierkegaard rejects the notion that environment is decisive in determining the fate of genius. He also puts forward his belief that each person needs a life-view or life for which and by which to live, a thought he explores further in the comic play "The Battle between the Old and the New Soap-Cellars."

Goodchild develops arguments from Nietzsche, Adorno and Horkheimer to suggests that our love of Western modernity is an expression of a piety and that it has become a global religion in practice, if not always in belief. Description : The English composer William Alwyn was not only one of the most versatile creative figures of his age, writing music for the concert hall, recital room, operatic stage and film screen; he was also a virtuoso instrumentalist and conductor, the teacher of some of the most important composers of the succeeding generation, and the founder of a number of influential music committees such as the Composers' Guild of Great Britain. Alwyn was a gifted writer, too, alive to literature and art - especially pre-Raphaelite painting, on which he was an authority - as well as to music, and Composing in Words presents his most important writings: the autobiographical essay Winged Chariot; the diary, Ariel to Miranda, in which he chronicled the composition of his Third Symphony; an extract from Early Closing, Alwyn's reminiscences of his Northampton childhood; and essays on film music, and on other composers, among them Elgar, Bax and Puccini. Description : The glossy guide book image of Bali is of a timeless paradise whose people are devoutly religious and artistically gifted. However, a hundred years of colonialism, war and Indonesian independence, and tourism have produced both modernizing changes and created an image of Bali as 'traditional'. Incorporating up-to-date ethnographic field work the book investigates the myriad of ways in which the Balinese has responded to the influx of outside influence. The book focuses on the fascinating interrelationship between tourism, economy, culture and religion in Bali, painting a twenty-first century picture of the Balinese. In documenting these diverse changes Howe critically assesses some of the work of Bali's most famous ethnographer, Clifford Geertz and demonstrates the importance of a historically grounded and broadly contextualized approach to the analysis of a complex society.

Bazaar and State in Iran: The Politics of the Tehran Marketplace

Product : Bazaar and State in Iran: The Politics of the Tehran Marketplace
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : The Tehran Bazaar has always been central to the Iranian economy and indeed, to the Iranian urban experience. Arang Keshavarzian's fascinating book compares the economics and politics of the marketplace under the Pahlavis, who sought to undermine it in the drive for modernisation and under the subsequent revolutionary regime, which came to power with a mandate to preserve the bazaar as an 'Islamic' institution. The outcomes of their respective policies were completely at odds with their intentions. Despite the Shah's hostile approach, the bazaar flourished under his rule and maintained its organisational autonomy to such an extent that it played an integral role in the Islamic revolution. Conversely, the Islamic Republic implemented policies that unwittingly transformed the ways in which the bazaar operated, thus undermining its capacity for political mobilisation. Arang Keshavarizian's book affords unusual insights into the politics, economics and society of Iran across four decades.

Ethnicity and Electoral Politics

Product : Ethnicity and Electoral Politics
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : This book asks what distinguishes peaceful plural democracies from violent ones and what distinguishes violent ethnic groups from peaceful ones within the same democracy. Contrary to conventional wisdom, it suggests that ethnic groups and their political demands are not inherently intransigent and that violence is not a necessary corollary of ethnic politics. The book posits that ethnic identity serves as a stable but flexible information shortcut for political choices, influencing party formation and development in new and maturing democracies. It furthermore argues that political intransigence and violence expressed by some ethnic groups stem from circumstances exogenous to ethnic affiliations. In particular, absolute restrictions on ethnic access to the executive produce conditions under which ethnic group incentive to participate in peaceful electoral politics is eliminated. A number of case studies and statistical analysis of all electoral democracies since 1945 are used to test and support the formal argument.

Moral Rights and Political Freedom

Description : Seeking a way out of today's bewildering rush of rights claims, Tara Smith's Moral Rights and Political Freedom offers a systematic account of the nature and foundations of rights. The book carefully elucidates what political freedom is and demonstrates why it should be protected by rights. Smith's thesis is that rights are teleological: respect for freedom is necessary for individuals' flourishing or eudaimonia. Smith illustrates how many alleged rights would actually undermine that objective. Her decisive refutation of the assumption that conflicts between rights are inevitable demonstrating how such conflicts are theoretically incoherent and practically self-defeating should go a long way toward resolving many contemporary disputes about rights.

Sportswomen at the Olympics

Description : Do the global sports media continue to ignore and downplay female sporting success - or is this invisibility changing? Does the world's largest media event, the Olympic Games, which places sport at the centre of world attention, also represent a media showcase for the achievements of female athletes? This is the main focus of this book. It explores women's printed media coverage during the 2004 Olympic Games and brings together the largest quantitative collection of content analyses of media coverage of a single event using the same methodology. Expanding beyond research centred on the English-speaking world, it includes analyses of newspapers published in 14 languages and research teams from 18 countries, including Norway, Denmark, Sweden, United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Germany, Spain, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Canada, the United States of America, Turkey, China, Japan, South Korea, South Africa and New Zealand. Based on comparative analyses the book provides a current picture of the place of sportswomen in global media. The comparative approach further informs and demonstrates how the methodology of content analysis can be used on printed media texts and its strengths and limitations when used across borders of language, culture and nation. With contributions from across Europe, Asia, Africa, North America and Oceania, Sportswomen at the Olympics: A Global Content Analysis of Newspaper Coverage provides evidence of the ongoing gendered difference in sports media coverage and shows how media may play a global role in the transformation and reproduction of gender structures in sports.

Looking to the Future: Building a Curriculum for Social Activism

Product : Looking to the Future: Building a Curriculum for Social Activism
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In advocating an action-oriented and issues-based curriculum, this book takes the position that a major, but shamefully neglected, goal of science and technology education is to equip students with the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values to confront the complex and often ill-defined socioscientific issues they encounter in daily life as citizens in an increasingly technology-dominated world carefully, critically, confidently and responsibly. In outlining proposals for addressing socioscientific issues through a curriculum organized in terms of four increasingly sophisticated levels of consideration, the author adopts a highly critical and politicized stance towards the norms and values that underpin both scientific and technological development and contemporary scientific, engineering and medical practice, criticizes mainstream STS and STSE education for adopting a superficial, politically na ve and, hence, educationally ineffective approach to consideration of socioscientific issues, takes the view that environmental problems are social problems occasioned by the values that underpin the ways in which we choose to live, and urges teachers to encourage students to reach their own views through debate and argument about where they stand on major socioscientific issues, including the moral-ethical issues they often raise. More controversially, the author argues that if students are to become responsible and politically active citizens, the curriculum needs to provide opportunities for them to experience and learn from sociopolitical action. The relative merits of direct and indirect action are addressed, notions of learning about action, learning through action and learning from action are developed, and a case is made for compiling a user-friendly database reflecting on both successful and less successful action-oriented curriculum initiatives. Finally, the book considers some of the important teacher education issues raised by this radically new approach to teaching and learning science and technology. The book is intended primarily for teachers and student teachers of science, technology and environmental education, graduate students and researchers in education, teacher educators, curriculum developers and those responsible for educational policy. The author is Emeritus Professor of Science Education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (University of Toronto), Adjunct Professor of Science Education at the University of Auckland and Visiting Professor of Science Education at the University of Hong Kong. His research interests include considerations in the history, philosophy and sociology of science and their implications for science and technology education, STSE education and the politicization of both students and teachers, science curriculum history, multicultural and antiracist education, and teacher education via action research.

Urban Spaces After Socialism: Ethnographies of Public Places in Eurasian Cities

Product : Urban Spaces After Socialism: Ethnographies of Public Places in Eurasian Cities
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : The two decades following the collapse of the Soviet Union brought great changes to the new nations on its periphery. "Urban Spaces after Socialism" offers a detailed ethnographic look at one area of change: the use and understanding of public space in the region's cities. Presenting case studies from Tashkent, Yerevan, Gumri, St. Petersburg, Tbilisi, Baku, and Osh, the book examines the way that different groups, from Christians and Muslims to ardent reformers and Soviet apologists, assign meaning to public spaces and deploy them in attempts to construct--and even control--the way the history of their cities is understood.

Description : Originally published in 1958, this book contains the complete text of Plato's Philebus in an English translation. The dialogue consists of contributions by Socrates, Protarchus, and Philebus, with Socrates as the primary speaker. A detailed commentary is provided, offering key textual insights and explanations of conceptually difficult areas. A General View of Positivism

Product : A General View of Positivism
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In A General View of Positivism French philosopher Auguste Comte (1798-1857) gives an overview of his social philosophy known as Positivism. Comte, credited with coining the term 'sociology' and one of the first to argue for it as a science, is concerned with reform, progress and the problem of social order in society. In this English edition of the work, published in 1865, he addresses the practical problems of implementing his philosophy or doctrine, as he also refers to Positivism, into society. He believes that society evolves through a series of stages that are ruled by social laws and culminate in a superior form of social life. During this reorganisation of society, which will find its greatest supporters among women and the working class, a 'new moral power' will emerge. Under the motto 'love, order and progress' Comte wishes humanism to replace organised religion as the object of spiritual worship.

Description : These essays bring home the most challenging observations of postmodernismmultiple identities, the fragility of meaning, the risks of communication. Sommer asserts that many people normally livethat is, think, feel, create, reason, persuade, laughin more than one language. She claims that traditional scholarship (aesthetics; language and philosophy; psychoanalysis, and politics) cannot see or hear more than one language at a time. The goal of these essays is to create a new field: bilingual arts & aesthetics which examine the aesthetic product produced by bilingual diasporic communities. The focus of this volume is the Americas, but examples and theoretical proposals come from Europe as well. In both areas, the issue offers another level of complexity to the migrant and cosmopolitan character of local societies in a global economy.

Description : Purchase one of 1st World Library's Classic Books and help support our free internet library of downloadable eBooks. Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - - For some reason the desert scene before Lucy Bostil awoke varying emotions - a sweet gratitude for the fullness of her life there at the Ford, yet a haunting remorse that she could not be wholly content - a vague loneliness of soul - a thrill and a fear for the strangely calling future, glorious, unknown. She longed for something to happen. It might be terrible, so long as it was wonderful. This day, when Lucy had stolen away on a forbidden horse, she was eighteen years old. The thought of her mother, who had died long ago on their way into this wilderness, was the one drop of sadness in her joy. Lucy loved everybody at Bostil's Ford and everybody loved her. She loved all the horses except her father's favorite racer, that perverse devil of a horse, the great Sage King. Lucy was glowing and rapt with love for all she beheld from her lofty perch: the green-and-pink blossoming hamlet beneath her, set between the beauty of the gray sage expanse and the ghastliness of the barren heights; the swift Colorado sullenly thundering below in the abyss; the Indians in their bright colors, riding up the river trail; the eagle poised like a feather on the air, and a beneath him the grazing cattle making black dots on the sage; the deep velvet azure of the sky; the golden lights on the bare peaks and the lilac veils in the far ravines; the silky rustle of a canyon swallow as he shot downward in the sweep of the wind; the fragrance of cedar, the flowers of the spear-pointed mescal; the brooding silence, the beckoning range, the purpledistance.

Music, Philosophy, and Modernity

Product : Music, Philosophy, and Modernity
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Modern philosophers generally assume that music is a problem to which philosophy ought to offer an answer. Andrew Bowie's Music, Philosophy, and Modernity suggests, in contrast, that music might offer ways of responding to some central questions in modern philosophy. Bowie looks at key philosophical approaches to music ranging from Kant, through the German Romantics and Wagner, to Wittgenstein, Heidegger and Adorno. He uses music to re-examine many ideas about language, subjectivity, metaphysics, truth and ethics, and he suggests that music can show how the predominant images of language, communication, and meaning in contemporary philosophy may be lacking in essential ways. His book will be of interest to philosophers, musicologists, and all who are interested in the relation between music and philosophy.

Description : The sun blazed down and down, till it was within half-an-hour of its setting; but the sketcher still lingered at his occupation of measuring and copying the chevroned doorway-a bold and quaint example of a transitional style of architecture, which formed the tower entrance to an English village church. The graveyard being quite open on its western side, the tweed-clad figure of the young draughtsman, and the tall mass of antique masonry which rose above him to a battlemented parapet, were fired to a great brightness by the solar rays, that crossed the neighbouring mead like a warp of gold threads, in whose mazes groups of equally lustrous gnats danced and wailed incessantly.

Heirs, Kin, and Creditors in Renaissance Florence

Product : Heirs, Kin, and Creditors in Renaissance Florence
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Visions of modernity rest in part on a distinction between inherited status (past) and achievement (present). Inheritance is taken as automatic, if not axiomatic; the recipients are passive, if grateful. This study, based on a singular source (Florentine repudiations of inheritance), reveals that inheritance was in fact a process, that heirs had options: at the least, to reject a burdensome patrimony, but also to maneuver property to others and to avoid (at times deceptively, if not fraudulently) the claims of others to portions of the estate. Repudiation was a vestige of Roman law that became once again a viable legal institution with the revival of Roman law in the Middle Ages. Florentines incorporated repudiation into their strategies of adjustment after death, showing that they were not merely passive recipients of what came their way. These strategies fostered family goals, including continuity across the generations.

Letting Stories Breathe: A Socio-Narratology

Product : Letting Stories Breathe: A Socio-Narratology
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Stories accompany us through life from birth to death. But they do not merely entertain, inform, or distress us--they show us what counts as right or wrong and teach us who we are and who we can imagine being. Stories connect people, but they can also disconnect, creating boundaries between people and justifying violence. In "Letting Stories Breathe," Arthur W. Frank grapples with this fundamental aspect of our lives, offering both a theory of how stories shape us and a useful method for analyzing them. Along the way he also tells stories: from folktales to research interviews to remembrances. Frank's unique approach uses literary concepts to ask social scientific questions: how do stories make life good and when do they endanger it? Going beyond theory, he presents a thorough introduction to dialogical narrative analysis, analyzing modes of interpretation, providing specific questions to start analysis, and describing different forms analysis can take. Building on his renowned work exploring the relationship between narrative and illness, "Letting Stories Breathe" expands Frank's horizons further, offering a compelling perspective on how stories affect human lives.

Description : Originator, innovator, activist and educator, Emeritus Professor Michael Edwards was central to the international evolution of art therapy. These previously unpublished papers are the most substantial written record of his thinking. Highly praised by leading figures in art psychotherapy, Professor Shaun McNiff wrote '...the ideas have wings that carry the reader inside to the marrow of art... The book will appeal to artists looking for a threshold into the arts in therapy'. Rejection of reductionism and fundamentalism made Edwards a champion of soul, a challenger of simple mindedness. Widely honoured as an art therapist, educator, supervisor and Jungian analyst this book appropriately reflects Edwards achievements. The humour, wisdom and idiosyncrasy of the writer has been preserved in the careful editing by Learmonth & Huckvale of these transcribed talks. The book is beautifully illustrated with some of Edward's favourite artworks, the 'Talepieces' from Thomas Bewick's Birds.

The Virtue of Aristotle's Ethics

Product : The Virtue of Aristotle's Ethics
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : While Aristotle 's account of the happy life continues to receive attention, many of his claims about virtue of character seem so puzzling that modern philosophers have often discarded them, or have reworked them to fit more familiar theories that do not make virtue of character central. In this book, Paula Gottlieb takes a fresh look at Aristotle 's claims, particularly the much-maligned doctrine of the mean. She shows how they form a thought-provoking ethic of virtue, one that deserves to be developed and refined. The first part of the book addresses the nature of virtue and the virtues, illuminated by the doctrine of the mean. Building on the conclusions of this analysis, the second part explains the mentality of the good person and the type of society that will allow such a person to flourish.

Everyday Life: Theories and Practices from Surrealism to the Present

Product : Everyday Life: Theories and Practices from Surrealism to the Present
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In the last twenty years the concept of the quotidien, or the everyday, has been prominent in contemporary French culture and in British and American cultural studies. This book provides the first comprehensive analytical survey of the whole field of approaches to the everyday. It offers, firstly, a historical perspective, demonstrating the importance of mainstream and dissident Surrealism; the indispensable contribution, over a 20-year period (1960-80), of four major figures: Henri Lefebvre, Roland Barthes, Michel de Certeau, and Georges Perec; and the recent proliferation of works that investigate everyday experience. Secondly, it establishes the framework of philosophical ideas on which discourses on the everyday depend, but which they characteristically subvert. Thirdly, it comprises searching analyses of works in a variety of genres, including fiction, the essay, poetry, theatre, film, photography, and the visual arts, consistently stressing how explorations of the everyday tend to question and combine genres in richly creative ways. By demonstrating the enduring contribution of Perec and others, and exploring the Surrealist inheritance, the book proposes a genealogy for the remarkable upsurge of interest in the everyday since the 1980s. A second main objective is to raise questions about the dimension of experience addressed by artists and thinkers when they invoke the quotidien or related concepts. Does the 'everyday' refer to an objective content defined by particular activities, or is it best thought of in terms of rhythm, repetition, festivity, ordinariness, the generic, the obvious, the given? Are there events or acts that are uniquely 'everyday', or is the quotidien a way of thinking about events and acts in the 'here and now' as opposed to the longer term? What techniques or genres are best suited to conveying the nature of everyday life? The book explores these questions in a comparative spirit, drawing new parallels between the work of numerous writers and artists, including Andre Breton, Raymond Queneau, Walter Benjamin, Michel Leiris, Maurice Blanchot, Michel Foucault, Stanley Cavell, Annie Ernaux, Jacques Reda, and Sophie Calle.

The Account of the Tabernacle: Translation and Textual Problems of the Greek Exodus

Product : The Account of the Tabernacle: Translation and Textual Problems of the Greek Exodus
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : The relation of the Septuagint to the original Hebrew is of major importance to the study of the Old Testament. In the closing chapters of Exodus this relation becomes notoriously obscure; in recording the execution of God's instructions for the making of the tabernacle and the priests' vestments, the Greek differs seriously both in order and content from our present Hebrew text. This raises the problem of how the Greek and Hebrew accounts came to stand in their present form, why they differ so widely, and which represents the older tradition. Scholars during the last century have been almost unanimous in maintaining that the Greek account is earlier than the Hebrew and is translated from a primitive (and now supposedly lost) text. Moreover, because of inconsistencies in technical terms, this part of the Greek Exodus is thought to be the work of a second translator. Dr Gooding puts forward a completely different explanation. This lively, clearly written and controversial book will be of particular interest to theologians and biblical scholars.

Product : Monastic Life in Anglo-Saxon England, c. 600-900
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : This major new history of monasticism in early Anglo-Saxon England explores the history of the Church between the conversion to Christianity in the sixth century and a monastic revival in the tenth. It represents the first comprehensive revision of accepted views about monastic life in England before the Benedictine reform. Sarah Foot shows how early Anglo-Saxon religious houses were simultaneously active and contemplative, their members withdrawing from the preoccupations of contemporary aristocratic society, while still remaining part of that world. Focusing on the institution of the 'minster' (the communal religious community) and rejecting a simplistic binary division between active 'minsters' and enclosed 'monasteries', Foot argues that historians have been wrong to see minsters in the light of ideals of Benedictine monasticism. Instead, she demonstrates that Anglo-Saxon minsters reflected more of contemporary social attitudes; despite their aim for solitude, they retained close links to aristocratic German society.
