Time: Big Ideas, Small Books

Product : Time: Big Ideas, Small Books
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Novelist, cultural commentator, memoirist, and historian Eva Hoffman examines our ever-changing perception of time in this inspired addition to the BIG IDEAS/small books series Time has always been the great given, the element that establishes the governing facts of human fate that cannot be circumvented, deconstructed, or wished away. But these days we are tampering with time in ways that affect how we live, the textures of our experience, and our very sense of what it is to be human. What is the nature of time in our time? Why is it that even as we live longer than ever before, we feel that we have ever less of this basic good? What effects do the hyperfast technologies--computers, video games, instant communications--have on our inner lives and even our bodies? And as we examine biology and mind on evermore microscopic levels, what are we learning about the process and parameters of human time? Hoffman regards our relationship to time--from jet lag to aging, sleep to cryogenic freezing--in this broad, eye-opening meditation on life's essential medium and its contemporary challenges.

Bluebird: Women and the New Psychology of Happiness

Product : Bluebird: Women and the New Psychology of Happiness
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : CAN A WOMAN BE SMART, EMPOWERED, "AND "HAPPY ? Happiness has become a serious business. Where twentiethcentury psychology focused on depression and illness, in the new millennium scientists have begun focusing on "positive psychology"--the study of happiness. Ariel Gore first became intrigued by this subject when she discovered that Positive Psychology was the most popular course on the Harvard campus. As she read deeper into the topic, she noticed something disturbing: everyone in this happy land was a man. Worse still, some of these new "experts" seemed hell-bent on proving that women with traditional values and breadwinning husbands--those who had made "an effort to expect less," according to one sociologist--were more content than women with feminist values. The more she read the more she wondered: Can a woman be smart, empowered, "and "happy? Determined to find out, Gore began her own "study in living"-- a journey into the feminine history, science, and experience of happiness. Her results, chronicled with humor and curiosity in "Bluebird," are by turns fascinating and enriching. A woman's happiness may not come easy, and it may not take the forms prescribed by popular culture. But, as Gore discovers, it is not only possible but necessary. "Bluebird "is a smart, no-nonsense, uplifting study of the "real "secret of joy, and whether it's truly at odds with the goals of modern women.

Description : Devoted to sharing their own delight and awe before the fundamental mysteries of the cosmos, Frank Wilczek (winner of the 2004 Nobel Prize in Physics) and science writer Betsy Devine also have a serious purpose: to reveal to the lay reader how a heightened perception can respond to timeless themes of the physical universe. For example, they show that even the most exotic theories always confirm that physical laws are precisely the same throughout the universe, and they explain how we have learned that the most massive molten stars and the tiniest frozen particles are in physical harmony. In their descriptions of the workings of the half-known universe, Wilczek and Devine bring all of us face to face with the beauty of eternal order and the inevitability of rational ends and beginnings.

The Courtier and the Heretic: Leibniz, Spinoza, and the Fate of God in the Modern World

Product : The Courtier and the Heretic: Leibniz, Spinoza, and the Fate of God in the Modern World
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : A drama of ideas as urgent and compelling as "Copenhagen"--a dance of personalities as colorful as in "Wittgenstein's Poker," Philosophy in the late seventeenth century was a dangerous business. No careerist could afford to know the reclusive philosopher known as an "atheist Jew," Baruch de Spinoza. Yet the wildly ambitious young genius Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz became obsessed with Spinoza's writings, wrote him clandestine letters, and ultimately called on Spinoza in person at his home in The Hague. Both men were at the center of the intense religious, political, and personal battles that gave birth to the modern age. One was a hermit with many friends; the other, a socialite no one trusted. One believed in a God whom almost nobody thought divine; the other defended a God in whom he probably did not believe. Their characters and ways of life defined their philosophies. In this exquisitely written philosophical romance of attraction and repulsion, greed and virtue, religion and heresy, Matthew Stewart dramatizes a titanic clash of beliefs that still continues today.

An ingenious blend of forensic science, history, and gripping suspense, Unlucky in Law pits the tough but compassionate attorney against the most unbeatable adversary of all: the law. Nina has just received a last-minute call from her old boss and mentor in Monterey County, California, where she is enjoying the breathtaking scenery and spending time with her boyfriend, P.I. Paul van Wagoner. Klaus Pohlmann is in desperate straits and begs Nina to take over a seemingly unwinnable case: A luckless two-time felon named Stefan Wyatt has robbed a grave and made off with the long-buried bones of a Russian emigre. Now, as a result of California's Third Strike law, Wyatt is looking at twenty-five years to life whether he's convicted of grand theft or murder. Either way, he's in big trouble. With her client's blood DNA found in the dead woman's apartment, Nina faces an uphill battle. Suspecting that her hapless client has been set up, Nina brings in a brilliant forensic pathologist who comes up with a startling theory about the case that could rewrite a crucial page of European history. As the evidence mounts against Nina's client, Paul launches his own investigation into the shadowy past of the two-decades-old skeleton. But long-held secrets nearly get him killed and reveal a more insidious evil at work--and an extraordinary story dating back to tsarist Russia and the Romanov court. As Wyatt edges closer to the unluckiest verdict of his young life, Nina makes an astounding discovery that just might save her client--or expose a killer who could bury them all. Masters of Enterprise

Product : Masters of Enterprise
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : From the early years of fur trading to today's Silicon Valley empires, America has proved to be an extraordinarily fertile land for the creation of enormous fortunes. Each generation has produced one or two phenomenally successful leaders, often in new industries that caught contemporaries by surprise, and each of these new fortunes reconfirmed the power of fanatically single-minded visionaries. John Jacob Astor and Cornelius Vanderbilt were the first American moguls; John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, and J. P. Morgan were kingpins of the Gilded Age; David Sarnoff, Walt Disney, Ray Kroc, and Sam Walton were masters of mass culture. Today Oprah Winfrey, Andy Grove, and Bill Gates are giants of the Information Age. America has again and again been the land of dizzying mountains of wealth. Here, in a wittily told and deeply insightful history, is a complete set of portraits of America's greatest generators of wealth. Only such a collective study allows us to appreciate what makes the great entrepreneurs really tick. As H. W. Brands shows, these men and women are driven, they are focused, they deeply identify with the businesses they create, and they possess the charisma necessary to persuade other talented people to join them. They do it partly for the money, but mostly for the thrill of creation. The stories told here -- including how Nike got its start as a business-school project for Phil Knight; how Robert Woodruff almost refused to take control of Coca-Cola to spite his father; how Thomas Watson saved himself from prison by rescuing Dayton, Ohio, from a flood; how Jay Gould nearly cornered the gold market; how H. L. Hunt went from gambling at cards to gambling with oilleases -- make for a narrative that is always lively and revealing and often astonishing. An observer in 1850, studying John Jacob Astor, would not have predicted the rise of Henry Ford and the auto industry. Nor would a student of Ford in 1950 have anticipated the takeoff of direct marketing that made Mary Kay Ash a trusted guide for millions of American women. Full of surprising insights, written with H. W. Brands's trademark flair, the stories in "Masters of Enterprise" are must reading for all students of American business history.

Blue Water

Product : Blue Water
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : "New York Times" bestselling author A. Manette Ansay delivers the unforgettable story of two families united by tragedy -- and one woman's deeply emotional journey toward a choice she'd never thought possible On an ordinary morning in Fox Harbor, Wisconsin, Meg and Rex Van Dorn's lives are irrevocably changed when a drunk driver slams into Meg's car, killing the couple's six-year-old son, Evan. In a town in which everyone knows everybody else, it's no surprise that Meg and the driver, Cindy Ann Kreisler, were once the best of friends. Now, as Meg recovers from her own injuries, she and Rex find themselves unable to cope with their anger and despair, especially after Cindy Ann returns -- with a mere slap on the wrist -- to the life she lived before the accident: living in a beautiful house, enjoying her own three daughters, all of whom walked away from the accident unharmed. "Mornings, we woke with an ache in our throats, a sourness in our stomachs, that had nothing to do with Evan. The truth was that, with each passing month, he was harder to remember, harder to see. I felt as if I were grasping at the color of water, the color of the wind or the sky. And this only made me angrier. My mind returned, again and again, to Cindy Ann, to what she'd done. When I passed Evan's room, the closed door like a fist, I thought about how Cindy Ann had destroyed us. When I saw other people's children, I promised myself that someday, Cindy Ann would pay." In their rage and grief, Meg and Rex buy a boat to sail around the world, hoping to put as much distance between themselves and Cindy Ann Kreisler as possible. Adrift in the company of other live-board cruisers, Meg tries to believe that she and Rex have left their bitterness behind. But when she returns to Fox Harbor for her older brother's wedding, she is forced to face the complex ties that bind her to the woman who has wounded her so badly. For, as Meg knows better than anyone, Cindy Ann has secrets and sorrows of her own, dating back to the summer of their friendship. Impassioned, insightful, and beautifully written, "Blue Water" is the story of people learning to face the unthinkable -- a compelling affirmation of the human potential for forgiveness, redemption, and grace.

Description : ""Hello Hello Treb Vladinsky from the planet Exus calling Earth and his diary. I'm going to come down and catch a few earthlings in about twenty seconds. Mostly girls. Over and out and all that."" Of course, you shouldn't know this because Ned Floyd doesn't want anyone reading from what is his most vile secret -- his diary. That's right. Ned keeps a diary. Most guys don't. Ned is quite aware of this, thank you very much. But he can't help it. He can't stop writing. So, to protect his reputation, he writes under the code name, Treb Vladinsky, all the while living in fear that the class bully, Nugget, will find out and plaster the halls with posters of Ned Floyd, diary writer. In the meantime, he cooks up schemes to get Nadia Nelson, the girl of his dreams, to notice him, all the while trying to keep her three savage older brothers, "up-and-coming thieves and murderers, probably," from noticing "him," and getting in the way of his and Nadia's long anticipated French kiss. And then there's his band, "The Raving Lunatics," where who plays what instrument is decided by who can throw the biggest tantrum. Well, they don't have to sound good, just loud, right? Now where was I? Oh yeah, and then there's the basement bonfire. Dish detergent drinks. Sock smoking. Sock smoking? What's that? Well, it's...oh, never mind. And a very special graveyard rendition of "California Girls." Actually, really, Ned would prefer that you wouldn't read this. After all, it's what's in his head.

Schumann and His World

Product : Schumann and His World
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : We know Robert Schumann in many ways: as a visionary composer, a seasoned journalist, a cultured man of letters, and a genius who, having passed his mantle on to the young Brahms, succumbed to mental illness in 1856. Drawing on recent pathbreaking research, this collection offers new perspectives on this seminal nineteenth-century figure. In Part I, Leon Botstein and Michael P. Steinberg assess Schumann's efforts to place music at the center of German culture, in public and private sectors. Bernhard R. Appel offers a probing source study of one of Schumann's most personal works, the "Album fur die Jugend, Op. 68, while John Daverio considers the generic identity of "Das Paradies und die Peri, and Jon W. Finson reexamines the first version of the Eichendorff "Liederkreis. Gerd Nauhaus investigates Schumann's approach to the symphonic finale, and R. Larry Todd considers the intractable issue of quotations and allusions in Schumann's music. Part II presents letters and memoirs, including unpublished correspondence between Clara Schumann and Felix and Paul Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. In Part III, conflicting critical views of Schumann are juxtaposed. Some of these sources are translated into English for the first time.

Every week it draws millions and millions of viewers to the edge of their seats as independent dealers and specialists from the country's leading auction houses appraise family heirlooms and flea market finds alike. Now this knowledge, authority, and passion is distilled in the Antiques Roadshow Primer, an introductory guide to American Antiques and collectibles. Antiques Roadshow has taught us to look for fortunes in our attics--perhaps to find, as other lucky souls have, an Anna Poole Peale portrait miniature worth $5,000 to $7,000 or a Confederate sword worth $35,000. Focusing on 11 major areas--including Furniture, Painting, Silver, Jewelry, Porcelain, and Toys--the primer addresses the essential things buyers and collectors need to know, covering vital details for each category, such as shapes, styles, and patterns, provenance, periods, and motifs. A 32-page full-color section amplifies each chapter by illustrating numerous examples of styles and techniques, and individual items are fully identified, often with their appraised value. Above all, it helps even first-timers to answer the two key question every collector must face: Is it old? Is it valuable?

Back to the Front

Product : Back to the Front
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : World War I is beyond the memory of almost everyone alive today. Yet it has left as deep a scar on the imaginative landscape of our century as it has on the land where it was fought. Nowhere is that more evident than on the Western Front--the sinuous, deadly line of trenches that stretched from the coast of Belgium to the border of France and Switzerland, a narrow swath of land in which so many million lives were lost. For journalist Stephen O'Shea, the legacy of the Great War is personal (both his grandfathers fought on the front lines) and cultural. Stunned by viewing the "immense wound" still visible on the battlefield of the Somme, and feeling that "history is too important to be left to the professionals," he set out to walk the entire 450 miles through no-man's-land to discover for himself and for his generation the meaning of the war. "Back to the Front" is a remarkable combination of vivid history and opinionated travel writing. As his walk progresses, O'Shea recreates the shocking battles of the Western Front, many now legendary--Passchendaele, the Somme, the Argonne, Verdun--and offers an impassioned perspective on the war, the state of the land, and the cultivation of memory. His consummate skill with words and details brings alive the players, famous and faceless, on that horrific stage, and makes us aware of why the Great War, indeed history itself, still matters. An evocative fusion of past and present, "Back to the Front" will resonate, for all who read it, as few other books on war ever have.

Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Hailed as "a warm and useful read," "A Class with Drucker" brings to life invaluable advice from the world's greatest thinker and writer on management. From 1975 to 1979, author William Cohen studied under the great Peter Drucker and became the first graduate of his doctoral program. What Drucker taught him literally changed his life. In a matter of a few years, he was recommissioned in the Air Force and rose to the rank of major general. Eventually, he became a full professor, management consultant, multibook author, and university president--all while maintaining a nearly lifelong friendship with the master. In "A Class with Drucker," Cohen shares many of Drucker's teachings that never made it into his countless books and articles, ideas that were offered to his students in classroom or informal settings. Cohen expands on Drucker's lessons with personal anecdotes about his teacher's personality, lack of pretension, and interactions with students and others. He also shows how Drucker's ideas can be applied to the real-world challenges managers face today. The Player

Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Set in the upper reaches of Hollywood moguldom, this powerful and disquieting first novel delivers the punch its strong beginning promises. Griffin Mill is a young, near-the-top executive at a major movie studio. His life is the movies, his life's goal is to run the studio, and his every move is measured for its effect on getting him there. He doesn't tell anyone when he begins receiving angry postcards from a writer who complains: "You said you'd get back to me. I'm still waiting" -- not because the cards threaten his life, but because they might be used against him within the studio. With a vague plan for propitiation, Griffin tries to pinpoint his threatening correspondent by making random contact with names from his calendar, all the while struggling not to lose his dominance in the management struggle. Dense with icons of the Hollywood myth -- story meetings, power lunches, the right tables at the right restaurants -- this is a sharply etched mystery/thriller. But it is even more effective as a kind of modern morality tale. Griffin's self-absorption is so complete, his focus on his standing among colleagues and rivals so single-minded, that ordering from a luncheon menu takes on more significance to him than murder. In the hands of this talented writer, insecure, ruthless, aggressive Griffin Mill is an indelible character.

The Tender Bar

Product : The Tender Bar
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : A moving, vividly told memoir full of heart, drama, and exquisite comic timing, about a boy striving to become a man, and his romance with a barJ .R. Moehringer grew up listening for a voice: It was the sound of his missing father, a disc jockey who disappeared before J.R. spoke his first words. As a boy, J.R. would press his ear to a clock radio, straining to hear in that resonant voice the secrets of masculinity, and the keys to his own identity. J.R.+s mother was his world, his anchor, but he needed something else, something more, something he couldn+t name. So he turned to the bar on the corner, a grand old New York saloon that was a sanctuary for all types of men-cops and poets, actors and lawyers, gamblers and stumblebums. The flamboyant characters along the bar-including J.R.+s Uncle Charlie, a Humphrey Bogart look-alike; Colt, a Yogi Bear sound-alike; Joey D, a soft-hearted brawler; and Cager, a war hero who raised handicapping horses to an art-taught J.R., tended him, and provided a kind of fatherhood by committee. When the time came for J.R. to leave home, the bar became a way station-from his entrance to Yale, where he floundered as a scholarship student way out of his element; to his introduction to tragic romance with a woman way out of his league; to his stint as a copy boy at the New York Times, where he was a faulty cog in a vast machine way out of his control. Through it all, the bar offered shelter from failure, from rejection, and eventually from reality-until at last the bar turned J.R. away.Riveting, moving, and achingly funny, The Tender Bar is at once an evocative portrait of one boy+s struggle to become a man, and a touching depiction of how some men remain lost boys.

The Bag Lady Papers: The Priceless Experience of Losing It All

Product : The Bag Lady Papers: The Priceless Experience of Losing It All
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Throughout her life, Alexandra Penney's worst fear was becoming a bag lady. Even as she worked several jobs while raising a son as a single mother, wrote a multimillion-dollar bestselling advice book, and became editor in chief of Self magazine, she was haunted by the image of herself alone, bankrupt, and living on the street. She even went to therapy in an attempt to alleviate the nagging in her mind that told her that all she had worked for could crumble. And then, one day, that's exactly what happened. Alexandra Penney had taken a friend's advice and invested nearly everything she had ever earned--all of her savings--with Bernie Madoff. So one day she was successful and wealthy; the next she had almost nothing. Suddenly, at an age when many Americans retire, Penney saw her worst nightmares coming true. Entertaining and inspiring, The Bag Lady Papers chronicles Penney's struggle to cope with the devastating financial and emotional fallout of being cheated out of her life savings, and traces her journey back to sanity and security. Her outraged blogs about the Madoff scandal in The Daily Beast and her commentary on CNN have generated millions of hits and earned her a loyal following. She's in high demand as a speaker. How do you pick yourself up after your worst nightmare comes true? Penney shows us how.

Healing Happens with Your Help: Understanding the Hidden Meanings Behind Illness

Product : Healing Happens with Your Help: Understanding the Hidden Meanings Behind Illness
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Is illness really just the result of external factors such as viruses, bacteria, or environmental contaminates invading the body? Or, is there something more to why we become ill? Could it be that the ancient metaphysicians were on to something when they viewed healing from the adage "As a person thinketh, so shall they be?" Do the mind and body truly imitate and imprint" "each other so what affects one affects the other? And if so, is it possible that if we acknowledge and understand the impact of these elements, we could not only restore our body back to good health, but we could actually make it better than before we became ill? " Healing Happens with Your Help" provides the answers to these questions and more and uncovers the hidden meanings behind illnesses such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, depression, and headaches. It looks at illness not from symptoms, but from origins; and not from the perspective of curing, but from the perspective of healing. It explores the complex relationship between emotions, attitudes, and beliefs and provides a mapping process to show you where you energetically hold these triggers in the organs, glands, muscles, and spine of your body. Most important, "Healing Happens with Your Help" offers insight into how you can heal your body and your life by simply changing patterns and changing thoughts.

Without Fidel: A Death Foretold in Miami, Havana, and Washington

Product : Without Fidel: A Death Foretold in Miami, Havana, and Washington
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : From the award-winning reporter and go-to source on Cuban-Miami politics Ann Louise Bardach comes a riveting, eye-opening account of the last chapter in the life of Fidel Castro: his near death and marathon finale, his enemies and their fifty-year failed battle to eliminate him, and the carefully planned succession and early reign of his brother Raul. Ann Louise Bardach offers a spellbinding chronicle of the Havana-Washington political showdown, drawing on nearly two decades of reporting and countless interviews with everyone from the "Comandante" himself, his co-ruler and brother Raul, and other family members, to ordinary Cubans as well as officials and politicos in Miami, Havana, and Washington. The result is an unforgettable dual portrait of Fidel and Raul Castro -- arguably the most successful and enduring political brother team in history. Since 1959, Fidel Castro has been the supreme leader of Cuba, deftly checkmating his foes, both from within and abroad; confronting eleven American presidents; and outfoxing dozens of assassination attempts, vanquished only by collapsing health. As night descends on Castro's extraordinary fifty-year reign, Miami, Havana, and Washington are abuzz with anxious questions: What led to the lightning-bolt purge of key Cuban officials in March 2009? Who will be Raul's heir? Will the U.S. embargo end now? Bardach offers profound and surprising answers to these questions as she meticulously chronicles Castro's protracted farewell and assesses his transformative impact on the world stage and the complex legacy that will long outlive him. She reports from three distinct vantage points: In Miami, where more than one million Cubans have fled, she interviews scores of exiles including Castro's would-be assassins Orlando Bosch and Luis Posada Carriles; in Washington, DC, she reports on the Obama administration's struggle to formulate a post-Castro strategy; in Havanah she permeates the bubble around the fiercely private and officially retired Castro to ascertain the extent of his undisclosed medical condition. Bardach delivers a compelling meditation on one of the most controversial, combative, and charismatic rulers in history. "Without Fidel" includes never-before-published reporting on Castro, his family, and his half-century grip on the largest country in the Caribbean while assessing how his departure will forever transform politics and policy in the Western Hemisphere -- and the world.

I Only Roast the Ones I Love: Busting Balls Without Burning Bridges

Product : I Only Roast the Ones I Love: Busting Balls Without Burning Bridges
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Making fun of people is a way of life for Jeffrey Ross. Called "an heir apparent to such old-school masters as Buddy Hackett and Rodney Dangerfield" by the "New York Times," Ross has memorably and uproariously roasted some of our favorite celebrities, from older-than-dirt Cloris Leachman to dirty old Hugh Hefner, to the beautiful Pamela Anderson and the handsome Bea Arthur. He even claims to have saved Courtney Love's life with his own brutal brand of tough love. Through his funny and poignant stories, Jeffrey Ross shares the irreverent secrets every successful roastmaster should know, such as: if a roastmaster is going to dish it out, he better be able to take it, and how to use your roasting skills to meet members of the opposite sex. Ross also reveals some tips for toasting your friends and family as well as his secrets for writing roast jokes. One of the world's foremost practitioners of insult comedy, Ross explains how to organize an event, save yourself if you bomb, and prepare yourself to take a punch if necessary. He shares behind-the-scenes stories from his humble beginnings in Manhattan's comedy clubs, where he performed with Jon Stewart, Dave Chappelle, and other up-and-coming comics; to the crazy backstage (and onstage) antics from unforgettable roasts of stars like Flava Flav, Drew Carey, William Shatner, Jerry Stiller, Larry The Cable Guy, and Bob Saget that he helped bring to mainstream television audiences. He has even appeared on ABC's hit show "Dancing with the Stars," where he was quickly voted off after the first round -- leading to a war with "Jimmy Kimmel Live"'s Cousin Sal Iacono that was eventually mediated by Tom Cruise over homemade cupcakes. A hilarious memoir and definitive how-to that will help you channel your own inner roastmaster, "I Only Roast the Ones I Love" will inspire you to go forth and carry a big schtick.

Description : "Fast and confident . . . well-drawn and vivid."-"The Seattle Times" "A slam-bang thriller. . . . LimA3n keeps the action coming at a furious pace."-"Albuquerque Journal" "The locations . . . are as amazingly vivid as ever, and his wild men heroes are just as good company."-"Los Angeles Times" George and Ernie are American military cops in Korea. They work the neon alleys of sin districts, chasing felons and black marketeers. It's not glamorous, but somebody's got to do it. The kidnapping of a child, held ransom for a priceless jade artifact, is more than these seedy cops can handle. They urge the father to pay it. The only problem is, dad hasn't got it. From that point on, officers SueAo and Bascom are pushed into intrigues way over their heads and expected to unravel conspiracies that are beyond them. Can two disheveled, disrespectful army foul-ups cope with all this? Then again, it's not like they have a choice. Martin LimA3n retired from US military service after 20 years in the US Army, including a total of 10 years in Korea. He and his wife live in Seattle. He is the author of "Jade Lady Burning," which was a "New York Times" Notable Book, and "Slicky Boys." Page 278 of Buddha's Money:

Description : Opposites Attract? Dr. Emilie Getz and Jonas Fielding are as different as two people could possibly be--the same age, with the same faith, living in the same small Pennsylvania town. She's a first-class neatnik; he's a world-class slob. She's into saving historical relics; he's into saving souls. But perhaps opposites do attract. For when this uptight historian and this laid-back land developer meet, sparks fly. And despite the rather inauspicious beginning to their relationship, neither one will escape unchanged...or unsmitten "A well-written, delightful concoction of romance, humor, tenderness, and fun." Lisa Samson, author of "Tiger Lillie" Opposites attract? Maybe not. Emilie Getz and Jonas Fielding are as different as two people--of the same age, with the same faith, living in the same charming Pennsylvania town--could be. She loves history; he loves new ideas. She sticks to the rules; he likes to break them. She's into saving relics; he's into saving souls. The one trait they share is a penchant for controlling every aspect of their lives, including their stubborn hearts. When Emilie's search for an archaeological treasure leads her to the one piece of land she can't have (thanks to Jonas), they choose opposing sides in an engaging battle of wits. Emilie, a no-nonsense sort of woman, is determined to have her way. But Jonas is on a mission as well: He wants to hear Emilie laugh. Often. "Liz Curtis Higgs mixes her usual humor into this entertaining story of roller-coaster romance." "Christian Retailing " "Delicious as Moravian sugar cake Readers will love it." Lori Copeland, author of "Roses Will Bloom Again " ""Bookends "is such fun...rich in character, setting, and spiritual dimensions." Gayle Roper, author of "Winter Winds " "A great story with believable characters, realistic situations, and a sprinkling of Higgs's humor." "K-LOVE News & Reviews " "Declare a holiday and cozy up with this engaging novel." Patsy Clairmont, author of "Stardust on My Pillow " Story Behind the Book Though she has traveled the world, Liz Curtis Higgs is a small-town girl at heart. In "Bookends, " Liz invites readers to visit a place she knows well: her hometown of Lititz, nestled in the rolling hills of historic Lancaster County, Pennsylvania . Fond memories of her childhood years in the Moravian church--one of the oldest of the Protestant denominations--and her love for Lititz history and traditions serve as a solid underpinning for this lively contemporary tale. Like many couples, Emilie and Jonas resemble human bookends--opposites in every way--until Emilie's joy-filled spiritual awakening turns their stubborn hearts in the same happy direction.

"Barnes & Noble Classics "pulls together a constellation of influences-biographical, historical, and literary-to enrich each reader's understanding of these enduring works. When Mark Twain's "The Prince and the Pauper" was published in 1881, the Atlanta Constitution sang its praises in no uncertain terms: "The book comes upon the reading public in the shape of a revelation." A timeless tale of switched identities, Twain's story revolves around the miserably poor Tom Canty "of Offal Court," who is lucky enough to trade his rags for the gilded robes of England's prince, Edward Tudor. As each boy is mistaken for the other, Tom enters a realm of privilege and pleasure beyond his most delirious dreams, while Edward plunges into acruel, dangerous world of beggars and thieves, cutthroats and killers. Befriended by the heroic Miles Hendon, Edward struggles to survive on the squalid streets of London, in the process learning about the underside of life in "Merry England." With its mixing of high adventure, raucous comedy, and scathing social criticism, presented in a hilarious faux-sixteenth-century vernacular that only Mark Twain could fashion, "The Prince and the Pauper" remains one of this incomparable humorist's most popular and oft-dramatized tales. Robert Tine is the author of six novels, including "State of Grace" and "Black Market," He has written for a variety of periodicals and magazines, from the "New York Times" to "Newsweek,"

Killing Time: An 18-Year Odyssey from Death Row to Freedom

Product : Killing Time: An 18-Year Odyssey from Death Row to Freedom
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In 1984, John Thompson was convicted and sentenced to death for the murder of a prominent white man in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was sent to Angola Prison and confined to his cell for twenty-three hours a day. However, Thompson adamantly proclaimed his innocence and just needed lawyers who believed that his trial had been mishandled and would step up to the plate against the powerful DA's office. But who would fight for Thompson's innocence when he didn't have an alibi for the night of the murder and there were two key witnesses to confirm his guilt? Killing Time is about the eighteen-year quest for Thompson's freedom from a wrongful murder conviction. After Philadelphia lawyers Michael Banks and Gordon Cooney take on his case, they struggle to find areas of misconduct in his previous trials while grappling with their questions about Thompson's innocence. John Hollway and Ronald M. Gauthier have interviewed Thompson and the lawyers, and paint a realistic and compelling portrait of life on death row and the corruption in the Louisiana police and DA's office. When it is found that evidence was mishandled in a previous trial that led to his death sentence in the murder case, Thompson is finally on his road to freedom-a journey that continues with his suit against Harry Connick, Sr. and the New Orleans DA's office to this day.

Inherently Unequal: The Betrayal of Equal Rights by the Supreme Court, 1865-1903

Product : Inherently Unequal: The Betrayal of Equal Rights by the Supreme Court, 1865-1903
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Between 1865 and 1870, the 13th Amendment abolished slavery in the U.S., the 14th conferred citizenship and equal protection under the law to all Americans, white or black, and the 15th gave black American males the right to vote. In 1875 the far-reaching Civil Rights Act granted all Americans regardless of color "the full and equal enjoyment" of public conveyances and places of amusement. Yet eight years later, in 1883, the Supreme Court, by an 8-1 vote, overturned the Civil Rights Act as unconstitutional, arguing Congress had overstepped its authority. As Lawrence Goldstone pointedly acknowledeges, in the next 20 years despite "by the dawn of the 20th century the U.S. had become the nation of Jim Crow laws, quasi-slavery, and precisely the same two-tiered system of justice that had existed in the slave era." How and why this happened—and the ramifications and reverberations unto today—is the subject of the powerful and provocative "Inherently Unequal." As he has done before, Goldstone challenges the conventional view of history through a rigorous examination of the historical record. He makes clear the Supreme Court—in cases as celebrated as "Plessy v. Ferguson "and the equally important "Williams v. Mississippi"—was deeply guilty by association, turning a blind eye to the obvious reality of Jim Crow, preferring to focus instead on constituional minutiae, and demonstrating the fallacy and hypocrisy of a strict interpretation of the Constitution. He reveals clear evidence that the great black migrations north were less about seeking opportunity than about escaping tyranny. At a time when our legacy with race continues to be so much discussed, and given endless interest in the history of the Supreme Court, Goldstone's book will command attention.
