Four Ingredient Cookbooks

Product : Four Ingredient Cookbooks
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : While passing out T-shirts at their kid's school, Linda Coffee, a home economist, and Emily Cale, a teacher, started talking about what to cook for dinner that night. Both still had carpool to run, errands and full-time jobs. They were tired, didn't have time to go to the grocery store and fast food was out because they had already done that three times that week. They needed something quick, easy and tasty. They wanted a "quick-fix meal". Linda commented that she didn't even read recipes with more than four ingredients any more. Hence, the "Four Ingredient Cookbook" was born. The first book sold 80,000 before the authors knew what happened. The second book, "More Four Ingredient Cookbook" was born, followed by "Low Fat and Light Four Ingredients" and all met with similar success. They sold more than 300,000 copies of the three separate cookbooks to individuals and to mom-and-pop gift stores within a few years. Now, there's one cookbook that combines all three.

Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : A breathtakingly poignant novel of suspense from one of fiction's newest leading voices. From bestselling author and Quill award nominee Pam Jenoff comes a rich, ambitious, and startling novel about a woman who must face a past she'd rather forget in order to uncover a dangerous legacy that threatens her future. Ten years ago, American Jordan Weiss's idyllic experience as a graduate student and coxswain at Cambridge was shattered when her boyfriend and fellow crewmember, Jared Short, drowned in the River Cam the night before the biggest race of the year. Since that time, Jordan, a State Department intelligence officer, has traveled the world on dangerous assignments but has managed to avoid returning to face her painful memories in England. When her terminally ill friend Sarah asks her to come to London, though, Jordan finds herself requesting a transfer to the one place she swore she'd never go again. In London, Jordan attempts to settle into her new life, pushing aside her haunting memories and taking on an urgent mission beside rakish agent Sebastian Hodges. Shortly after her arrival, just when she thinks there's hope for a fresh start in England, she is approached by a former college classmate who makes a startling assertion. He tells her that Jared's death was not an accident, but that he was murdered. Jordan quickly learns that Jared's death was indeed not an accident, and that his research on World War II had uncovered a shameful secret. But powerful forces with everything to lose will stop at nothing to keep the past buried. Soon, Jordan finds herself in grave peril as she struggles to find the answers that lie treacherously close to home, the truth that threatens to change her life forever, and the love that makes it all worth fighting for. It is a journey that sweeps readers across England and back in time to reveal the incalculable dangers that lie in the wake of war. Fast-paced and impossible to put down, "Almost Home" establishes Pam Jenoff as one of the best new writers in the genre.

Called Back: My Reply to Cancer, My Return to Life

Product : Called Back: My Reply to Cancer, My Return to Life
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : "Mary Cappello's Called Back shimmers on the page. Ezra Pound said a writer has to 'make it new' and Cappello has done that rare feat. Cancer books have become a genre that nobody wants to read, except this book. Read this book. Called Back is exquisite."--Patty Dann author of Mermaids, and of The Goldfish Went on Vacation: A Memoir of Loss (and Learning to Tell the Truth About It) "There is no scarier moment than when the doctor looks at his feet, clears his throat, and mutters that you have cancer. The earth opens under you. After a while, most patients summon a remarkable courage to confront the relentless disease and the rugged cures. But few have summoned the clear-eyed, large-hearted intelligence that Mary Cappello has to describe the experience in harrowing, redemptive detail. With precision, passion, wit, and a poet's eye for the incongruous and devastating--that is to say, the human--she has written a book that will open your eyes and touch your heart...Called Back is an astonishing literary achievement."--J.D. McClatchy, editor of The Yale Review, author of Mercury Dressing "The momentum of Called Back...derives from Mary Cappello's] extraordinarily capacious mind: her intelligence, wit, and emotional candor; the clarity and alertness of her train of thought; the restlessness of her style... Cappello makes stunning connections between literature, art, her life, medicine, cancer. A brilliant book."--David Shields, author of The Thing About Life is One Day You'll Be Dead, and Reality Hunger "I loved being offered the companionship of Cappello's feeling mind... I loved her insistence on taking everything in, not rushing to be 'healed' before experience registers. I loved the precision and passion with which this book about facing mortality attends to the particulars of being alive--both in the body and in language."--Jan Clausen author of If You Like Difficulty, and From a Glass House, and Apples and Oranges: My Journey through Sexual Identity In her intensely personal and insightful memoir, Mary Cappello wonders aloud for us what breast cancer awareness really makes us aware of, and responds as if for the first time to the deceivingly simple command: "tell me what you're feeling." Unable to eat on chemotherapy, Cappello feasts on the paintings of Marsden Hartley, yearns in the tradition of Emily Dickinson and Gertrude Stein, keeps company with Marcel Proust, and lets queer artists tease her back to life. Called Back looks through the lens of cancer to discover--often with humor--new truths about intimacy and essential solitude, eroticism, the fact of the body, and the impossibility of turning away. Mary Cappello is the author of two previous books of literary nonfiction, Night Bloom and Awkward: A Detour, a Los Angeles Times bestseller. Her essays and experimental prose appear in such places as The Georgia Review, Salmagundi, Southwest Review, and American Letters and Commentary, an

Spoon Fed: How Eight Cooks Saved My Life

Product : Spoon Fed: How Eight Cooks Saved My Life
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : From the prominent "New York Times" food writer, a memoir recounting the tough life lessons she learned from a generation of female cooks-including Marion Cunningham, Alice Waters, Ruth Reichl, Rachael Ray, and Marcella Hazan. Somewhere between the lessons her mother taught her as a child and the ones she is now trying to teach her own daughter, Kim Severson stumbled. She lost sight of what mattered, of who she was and who she wanted to be, and of how she wanted to live her life. It took a series of women cooks to reteach her the life lessons she forgot-and some she had never learned in the first place. Some as small as a spoonful, and others so big they saved her life, the best lessons she found were delivered in the kitchen. Told in Severson's frank, often funny, always perceptive style, "Everything I Need to Know I Learned in the Kitchen" weaves together the stories of eight important cooks with the lessons they taught her-lessons that seemed to come right when she needed them most. We follow Kim's journey from an awkward adolescent to an adult who channeled her passions into failing relationships, alcohol, and professional ambition, almost losing herself in the process. Finally as Severson finds sobriety and starts a family of her own, we see her mature into a strong, successful woman, as we learn alongside her. An emotionally rich, multilayered memoir and an inspirational, illuminating series of profiles of the most influential women in the world of food, "Everything I Need to Know I Learned in the Kitchen" is Severson's story and the story of the women who came before her-and ultimately, a testament to the wisdom that can be found in the kitchen.

On the Right Track: From Olympic Downfall to Finding Forgiveness and the Strength to Overcome and Succeed

Product : On the Right Track: From Olympic Downfall to Finding Forgiveness and the Strength to Overcome and Succeed
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : For more than a decade, Marion Jones was hailed as the "the fastest woman on the planet." At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, she became the first woman ever to win five medals at one Olympics. That same year, the Associated Press and ESPN named her Athlete of the Year. She was on the cover of "Vogue" and "Time." She seemed to have it all--fame, fortune, talent, and international acclaim. Now she is a convicted felon. The trouble started in 2003 when she lied to federal agents about her use of a performance-enhancing drug and her knowledge of a check fraud scam. In 2007, no longer able to live with the lies, she admitted the truth. In a sad end to what seemed like a storybook career, she was stripped of her medals, and her track-and-field records were wiped from the books. She was incarcerated at Carswell federal prison in Fort Worth, Texas--a prison known for its violence and abuse. While there, she kept herself in shape and her sanity intact by running on a dirt track and a treadmill in the prison's improvised weight room. But her imprisonment was not the end for Marion Jones. In fact, it marked a new beginning. She is now using her story to change the lives of people the world over and inspire others who, like her, face obstacles that seem insurmountable. "On the Right Track "is the candidly told story of how Marion came to grips with her lies and the consequences of her actions, and how she found meaning in all of it. What she tells her children and has now applied to her own life is that when you make a mistake, you admit it, you accept the consequences, you move on, you make the wrong a right. She teaches her children and others to take a break and pause before making impulsive and potentially harmful decisions. At the heart of this book are real issues that we all face: learning to grow through pain; making decisions that will help us far into the future; overcoming failure and discouragement; and applying practical principles that point the way to personal and spiritual breakthrough.

Natural Order

Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : ""It's beautiful," I said, even though it wasn't my style. It was cut glass and silver. Something a movie star might wear. Is this what my boy thought of me? I wondered as he fastened it around my neck. He called me Elizabeth Taylor and I laughed and laughed. I wore that necklace throughout the rest of the day. In spite of its garishness, I was surprised by how I felt: glamourous, special. I was out of my element amidst my kitchen cupboards and self-hemmed curtains. I almost believed in a version of myself that had long since faded away. "--From Natural Order by Brian Francis " "Joyce Sparks has lived the whole of her 86 years in the small community of Balsden, Ontario. "There isn't anything on earth you can't find your own backyard," her mother used to say, and Joyce has structured her life accordingly. Today, she occupies a bed in what she knows will be her final home, a shared room at Chestnut Park Nursing Home where she contemplates the bland streetscape through her window and tries not to be too gruff with the nurses. This is not at all how Joyce expected her life to turn out. As a girl, she'd allowed herself to imagine a future of adventure in the arms of her friend Freddy Pender, whose chin bore a Kirk Douglas cleft and who danced the cha-cha divinely. Though troubled by the whispered assertions of her sister and friends that he was "fruity," Joyce adored Freddy for all that was un-Balsden in his flamboyant ways. When Freddy led the homecoming parade down the main street, his expertly twirled baton and outrageous white suit gleaming in the sun, Joyce fell head over heels in unrequited love. Years later, after Freddy had left Balsden for an acting career in New York, Joyce married Charlie, a kind and reserved man who could hardly be less like Freddy. They married with little fanfare and she bore one son, John. Though she did love Charlie, Joyce often caught herself thinking about Freddy, buying Hollywood gossip magazines in hopes of catching a glimpse of his face. Meanwhile, she was growing increasingly alarmed about John's preference for dolls and kitchen sets. She concealed the mounting signs that John was not a "normal" boy, even buying him a coveted doll if he promised to keep it a secret from Charlie. News of Freddy finally arrived, and it was horrifying: he had killed himself, throwing himself into the sea from a cruise ship. "A mother always knows when something isn't right with her son," was Mrs. Pender's steely utterance when Joyce paid her respects, cryptically alleging that Freddy's homosexuality had led to his destruction. That night, Joyce threatened to take away John's doll if he did not join the softball team. Convinced she had to protect John from himself, she set her small family on a narrow path bounded by secrecy and shame, which ultimately led to unimaginable loss. Today, as her life ebbs away at Chestnut Park, Joyce ponders the t

Description : One of the unheralded masterpieces of twentieth-century American fiction, Light While There Is Light is acclaimed poet Keith Waldrop's autobiographical novel about the myriad ghosts left behind by his family. Born to a deeply religious mother, the narrator and his siblings are led across the US as she searches for the "right" religious sect a trip that ends with her speaking in tongues, and finally her total isolation. But no synopsis can do justice to the beauty of Keith Waldrop's measured, wise, and unembroidered prose, illuminating the fear, madness, and destruction within hearth and home though never repudiating his love for same. In a tradition that stretches back through Flannery O'Connor and William Faulkner to Hawthorne, Melville, and Poe, Keith Waldrop and Light While There Is Light are American treasures.

To Be or Not to Be

Product : To Be or Not to Be
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In "To Be or Not to Be" (1942) Ernest Lubitsch brought his legendary comic "touch" to the most unpromising situation: life in Nazi-occupied Poland. The film brought light and warmth to wartime calamity, but without trivializing reality. A group of ham actors have to abandon a theater production set in Nazi Germany as Poland is invaded. Instead they bring their dubious talents to the work of resistance, role-playing and inveigling their way under the noses of the Gestapo led by "Concentration Camp" Erhardt (Sig Ruman). The central roles of Joseph and Marion Tura are taken by Jack Benny and Carole Lombard and their performances are marvels of comic acting. In this study Peter Barnes considers what it is to make comedy out of tragedy. "To Be or Not to Be" tells us that in the face of the brutality and unimagined ignorance of men in power, one must never lose one's style. If everything is lost, but lost with style, despair can be kept at bay and turned into a small victory. Barnes also shows how the comedy is achieved and in so doing sheds light on the enigmatic "Lubitsch touch."

The Gospel of Thomas contains "secret sayings of the living Jesus" that the politically organized church tried desperately to destroy. The question is: why? Insights from the Secret Teachings of Jesus gives us a powerful clue, and provides guidance in understanding this beautiful and wonderful collection of Jesus' teachings. Description : In this engaging, accessible memoir, Charles Hartman shows how computer programming has helped him probe poetry's aesthetic possibilities. He discusses the nature of poetry itself and his experiences with primitive computer-generated poetry programs and -- illustrated with sample computer-produced verses -- traces the development of more advanced hardware and software. The central question about this cyber-partnership, Hartman says, "isn't exactly whether a poet or a computer writes the poem, but what kinds of collaboration might be interesting." He examines the effects of randomness, arbitrariness, and contingency on poetic composition, concluding that "the tidy dance among poet and text and reader creates a game of hesitation. In this game, a properly programmed computer has a chance to slip in some interesting moves."

Robert Irwin: Primaries and Secondaries [With CDROM]

Product : Robert Irwin: Primaries and Secondaries [With CDROM]
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : A pivotal influence in contemporary art, Robert Irwin's work investigates perception and phenomenological experience through sculptural and installation works that engage directly with a location's physical conditions. In the late 1960s, Irwin's early pieces helped to define the aesthetics of the west coast Light and Space movement. In 1970, Irwin abandoned his studio-based art and stripped away all of his conceptions about art-making, until only those two criteria truly did remain: light and space. By the 1980s, he had evolved guidelines for how a site-based art could proceed, and, in a seminal 1986 statement, laid out approaches for "site dominant," "site adjusted," "site specific" or "site conditioned" art--terms that are still essential today. "Robert Irwin: Primaries and Secondaries" spans five decades of the artist's work. Produced to accompany the largest exhibition of Irwin's work since 1993, it includes five of his most recent installation works, four of which were created specifically for MCASD--and features a video documentary of the exhibition installation, plus five essays from the artist's distinguished theoretical output.

Kentucky's Saddlebred Heritage

Product : Kentucky's Saddlebred Heritage
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Long associated with fine Thoroughbred horses, Kentuckys Bluegrass region is also home to Americas oldest indigenous breed: the American Saddlebred horse. A composite of several breeds, the Saddlebred was developed by 18thcentury colonists who sought a goodlooking, sensible, adaptable, and comfortable animal to ride and drive. These traits made it the mainstay of the Confederate cavalry during the Civil War and the choice mount of many generals on both sides. As the Industrial Revolution replaced the need for working horse power, the Saddlebred evolved naturally into recreational activities. Affectionately known as peacock of the show ring, the Saddlebreds beauty, expression, and athleticism epitomize the essence of a show horse. In many ways, the breeds history parallels that of America and unfolds in pictures in Kentuckys Saddlebred Heritage.

Love Cemetery: Unburying the Secret History of Slaves

Product : Love Cemetery: Unburying the Secret History of Slaves
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : By the eve of the Civil War, there were four million slaves in North America, and Harrison County was the largest slave-owning county in Texas. So when China Galland returned to research her family history there, it should not have surprised her to learn of unmarked cemeteries for slaves. "My daddy never let anybody plow this end of the field," a local matron told a startled Galland during a visit to her antebellum mansion. "The slaves are buried there." Galland's subsequent effort to help restore just one of these cemeteries--Love Cemetery--unearths a quintessential American story of prejudice, land theft, and environmental destruction, uncovering racial wounds that are slow to heal. Galland gathers an interracial group of local religious leaders and laypeople to work on restoring Love Cemetery, securing community access to it, and rededicating it to the memories of those buried there. In her attempt to help reconsecrate Love Cemetery, Galland unearths the ghosts of slavery that still haunt us today. Research into county historical records and interviews with local residents uncover two versions of history--one black, one white. Galland unpacks these tangled narratives to reveal a history of shame--of slavery and lynching, Jim Crow laws and land takings (the theft of land from African-Americans), and ongoing exploitation of the land surrounding the cemetery by oil and gas drilling. With dread she even discovers how her own ancestors benefited from the racial imbalance. She also encounters some remarkable, inspiring characters in local history. Surprisingly, the original deed for the cemetery's land was granted not by a white plantation owner, but by Della Love Walker, the niece of the famous African-American cowboy Deadwood Dick. Through another member of the Love Cemetery committee, Galland discovers a connection to Marshall's native son, James L. Farmer, a founder of Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and organizer of the 1961 Freedom Riders. In researching local history, Galland also learns of the Colored Farmers' Alliance, a statewide group formed in the 19th century that took up issues ranging from low wages paid to cotton pickers to emigration to Liberia. By telling this one story of ultimate interracial and intergenerational cooperation, Galland provides a model of the kind of communal remembering and reconciliation that can begin to heal the deep racial scars of an entire nation.

Product : Three Revenge Tragedies: The Revenger's Tragedy; The White Devil; The Changeling
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Following Queen Elizabeth Ias reign, the new court of King James was beset by political instability and moral corruption. This atmosphere provided fertile ground for the dramatists of the age, who explored the ways in which social decadence and the abuse of power breed resentment, leading inexorably to violent retribution. In Cyril Tourneuras "The Revengeras Tragedy," the debauched son of an Italian Duke attempts to rape the virtuous Glorianaaa veiled reference to Elizabeth I. John Websteras "The White Devil" depicts a sinister world of intrigue and murderous infidelity, while "The Changeling," perhaps Thomas Middletonas supreme achievement, powerfully portrays a woman bringing about her own unwitting destruction. All three are masterpieces of brooding intensity, dominated by images of decay, disillusionment, and death.

Creative Bible Lessons in Ezekiel: Ancient Revelations for a Postmodern Generation

Description : Most people avoid teaching from Ezekiel. Not only is it a book full of strange and (sometimes) disturbing imagery, but it also presents a vivid depiction of a God that won't fit neatly into the categories we typically have in mind for him. It's because of these reasons that Ezekiel is an important book to study. But don't be afraid. Creative Bible Lessons in Ezekiel makes it a little easier to bring this bizarre and often confusing book to your students.Following the history of the bestselling Creative Bible Lessons series, this book introduces some new elements into your teaching. Because Ezekiel is so unfamiliar to many people, there is extensive background for leaders, including research from several commentaries and other books. There's enough information there for you to understand the passage enough to be able to teach it confidently. In addition to the background, you'll find a combination of illustrations, activities, movie clips, and song suggestions to help bring the passage to life. Each section ends with a journaling exercise for your students to make the passage personal. Since many adults steer clear of this imaginative book of the Bible, this resource will not only help you teach your students---you'll learn something yourself Help your students uncover this book, and lead them closer to the God of Ezekiel---the God who surprises us frequently and loves us completely.

Description : Diets don't work. The pounds may slide off, but for too many dieters, once the food scales and calorie counters have been put away, the weight returns. Dr. Abraham Twerski, a specialist in addictive behavior, shows that it is not lack of willpower that leads to overeating but an absence of self-esteem. To develop healthy eating habits, a person must first develop a strong sense of self. With his characteristic upbeat style, Dr. Twerski explains: -The seemingly illogical compulsion of overeating and its connection to low self-esteem -The origins and evolutions of low self-esteem and how to identify common problems of a negative self-image -How to rely on yourself, instead of food, in times of stress, anger, and fear -How to deal with friends and family members who may contribute to and unhealthy self-image and eating habits -How to find the courage to change the life-long habits and where to get outside help in the form of therapy and support groups With Dr. Twerski's straightforward and honest approach, losing weight is redefined as gaining a sense of self and banishing diets forever.

Description : John Boyne has become internationally known for his acclaimed novels "Crippen "and the bestselling "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas," Now, for the first time in the United States, comes the book that started the career of the author that the "Irish Examiner "calls "one of the best and original of the new generation of Irish writers." It is 1758 and Matthieu Zela is fleeing Paris after witnessing the murder of his mother and his stepfather's execution. Matthieu's life is characterized by one extraordinary fact: before the eighteenth century ends, he discovers that his body has stopped ageing. At the end of the twentieth century and the ripe old age of 256 he is suddenly forced to answer an uncomfortable question: what is the worth of immortality without love? In this carefully crafted novel, John Boyne juxtaposes history and the buzz of the modern world, weaving together portraits of 1920s Hollywood, the Great Exhibition of 1851, the French Revolution, the Wall Street Crash, and other landmark events into one man's story of murder, love, and redemption.

For Michael Gabriel, the answers to these questions lie in another dimension, a realm of eternity where there is no concept of time, only pure life force . . . pure existence. And pure evil. Now, as was foretold five hundred years ago in the Mayan Popol Vuh, two boys are born---Michael's sons. His dark-haired brother, Immanuel, refuses his genetic calling, desiring a normal life. Only the combined powers of the Gabriel twins can resurrect their savior father and save the human race from an eternity of repeating its own self-destruction. But on the same fateful day of the twins' birth, another child enters the world. Exposed to the uglier side of existence, empowered by her post-human genetics, the beautiful, schizophrenic Lilith will travel down a darker path that leads to eon-distant Xibalba---the Mayan version of hell. Common Nonsense: Glenn Beck and the Triumph of Ignorance

Product : Common Nonsense: Glenn Beck and the Triumph of Ignorance
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Who is this guy and why are people listening? Forget Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, and Sean Hannity--Glenn Beck is the right's new media darling and the unofficial leader of the conservative grassroots. Lampooned by the left and lionized by the far right, his bluster-and-tears brand of political commentary has commandeered attention on both sides of the aisle. Glenn Beck has emerged over the last decade as a unique and bizarre conservative icon for the new century. He fantasizes aloud about killing his political opponents and encourages his listeners to embrace a cynical paranoia that slides easily into a fantasyland filled with enemies that do not exist, and solutions that are incoherent, at best. Since the election of Barack Obama, Beck's bombastic, conspiratorial, and often viciously personal approach to political combat has made him one of the most controversial figures in the history of American broadcasting. In "Common Nonsense," investigative reporter Alexander Zaitchik explores Beck's strange brew of ratings lust, boundless ego, conspiratorial hard-right politics, and gimmicky morning-radio entertainment chops. Separates the facts from the fiction, following Beck from his troubled childhood to his recent rise to the top of the conservative media heap Zaitchik's recent three-part series in "Salon" caused so much buzz, Beck felt the need to attack it on his show Based on Zaitchik's interviews with former Beck coworkers and review of countless Beck writings and television and radio shows Examines Beck's high-profile obsessions (Acorn and Van Jones) as well as his lesser-known influences (obscure Mormon radicals like Cleon Skousen.) Zaitchik's writing has appeared in the "New Republic," the "Nation," "Salon," "Wired," the "New York Times," and Alternet Beck, a perverse and high-impact media spectacle, has emerged as a leader in a conservative protest movement that raises troubling questions about the health of American democracy.

Drawing upon historical materials, survey and statistical data, and extensive interviews in Japan, Mary Brinton provides an in-depth and original examination of the role of gender in Japan's phenomenal postwar economic growth. Brinton finds that the educational system, the workplace, and the family in Japan have shaped the opportunities open to female workers. Women move in and out of the workforce depending on their age and family duties, a great disadvantage in a system that emphasizes seniority and continuous work experience. Brinton situates the vicious cycle that perpetuates traditional gender roles within the concept of human capital development, whereby Japanese society "underinvests" in the capabilities of women. The effects of this underinvestment are reinforced indirectly as women sustain male human capital through unpaid domestic labor and psychological support. Brinton provides a clear analysis of a society that remains misunderstood, but whose economic transformation has been watched with great interest by the industrialized world.

Twisted Histories, Altered Contexts: Representing the Chambri in the World System

Product : Twisted Histories, Altered Contexts: Representing the Chambri in the World System
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Deborah Gewertz and Frederick Errington have worked as anthropologists in Papua New Guinea for nearly two decades. In this, their second joint study of the Chambri, they consider the way those in a small-scale society, peripheral to the major centers of influence, struggle to sustain some degree of autonomy. They describe the Chambri caught up in world processes of social and cultural change, and attempt to create a "collective biography" that conveys the intelligibility and significance of the twentieth century experience of these Papua New Guineans whom they have come to know well. This biography consists of interlocking stories, twisted histories, commentaries and contexts about Chambri who are negotiating their objectives while entangled in systemic change and confronting Western representations of modernization and development.

Windhaven

Product : Windhaven
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : George R. R. Martin has thrilled a generation of readers with his epic works of the imagination, most recently the critically acclaimed "New York Times" bestselling saga told in the novels A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, and A Storm of Swords. Lisa Tuttle has won acclaim from fans of science fiction, horror, and fantasy alike-- most recently for her haunting novel The Pillow Friend. Now together they gift readers with this classic tale of a brilliantly rendered world of ironbound tradition, where a rebellious soul seeks to prove the power of a dream. The planet of Windhaven was not originally a home to humans, but it became one following the crash of a colony starship. It is a world of small islands, harsh weather, and monster-infested seas. Communication among the scattered settlements was virtually impossible until the discovery that, thanks to light gravity and a dense atmosphere, humans were able to fly with the aid of metal wings made of bits of the cannibalized spaceship. Many generations later, among the scattered islands that make up the water world of Windhaven, no one holds more prestige than the silver-winged flyers, who bring news, gossip, songs, and stories. They are romantic figures crossing treacherous oceans, braving shifting winds and sudden storms that could easily dash them from the sky to instant death. They are also members of an increasingly elite caste, for the wings--always in limited quantity--are growing gradually rarer as their bearers perish. With such elitism comes arrogance and a rigid adherence to hidebound tradition. And for the flyers, allowing just anyone to join their cadre is an idea that borders on heresy. Wings are meant only for the offspring of flyers--now the new nobility of Windhaven. Except that sometimes life is not quite so neat. Maris of Amberly, a fisherman's daughter, was raised by a flyer and wants nothing more than to soar on the currents high above Windhaven. By tradition, however, the wings must go to her stepbrother, Coll, the flyer's legitimate son. But Coll wants only to be a singer, traveling the world by sea. So Maris challenges tradition, demanding that flyers be chosen on the basis of merit rather than inheritance. And when she wins that bitter battle, she discovers that her troubles are only beginning. For not all flyers are willing to accept the world's new structure, and as Maris battles to teach those who yearn to fly, she finds herself likewise fighting to preserve the integrity of a society she so longed to join--not to mention the very fabric that holds her culture together.

Cut Time: An Education at the Fights

Product : Cut Time: An Education at the Fights
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Carlo Rotella, an award-winning writer and ringside veteran, unearths the hard wisdom in any kind of fight, from barroom dustup to HBO extravaganza. He vividly describes the tough choices and subtle pleasures that come the way of every fighter, from perennial underdogs on the tank-town circuit to the one-time heavyweight champion Larry Holmes, who still spars to retching exhaustion daily. Rotella uncovers the often startling light that boxing sheds on the world beyond the ring. A college student's brief fistic career pinpoints the moment when adulthood arrives. The serenity of a fellow fan shows Rotella how to process the trauma of a car crash. The persistence of a wizened ex-champion reminds him of his grandmother and helps him accept her death. Throughout, Rotella achieves moving resonances between the worlds inside and outside the ropes. He also tackles fascinating questions that have gone largely unexplored until now: How do boxers endure the brutal punishment that is the sport's essence? And why do they come back for more, again and again? As Rotella traces his immersion in the fight world, he achieves what few other writers in that world have: he makes it relevant to us, whether we're fans or not.

All the Presidents Men Classic Edition

Product : All the Presidents Men Classic Edition
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : The 25th-anniversary edition of Bernstein and Woodward's classic of investigative journalism. In what must be the most devastating political detective story of the century, two young "Washington Post" reporters whose brilliant investigative journalism smashed the Watergate scandal wide open tell the whole behind-the-scenes drama the way it really happened. The story begins with a burglary at Democratic National Committee headquarters on June 17, 1972. Bob Woodward, who was then working on the "Washington Post's" District of Columbia staff, was called into the office on a Saturday morning to cover the story. Carl Bernstein, a Virginia political reporter on the "Post," was also assigned. The two men soon learned that this was not a simple burglary. Following lead after lead, Woodward and Bernstein picked up a trail of money, secrecy and high-level pressure that led to the Oval Office and implicated the men closest to Richard Nixon and then the President himself. Over the months, Woodward met secretly with Deep Throat, now perhaps America's most famous still-anonymous source. Here is the amazing story. From the first suspicions through the tortuous days of reporting and finally getting people to talk, the journalists were able to put the pieces of the puzzle together and produce the stories that won the "Post" a Pulitzer Prize. "All the President's Men" is the inside story of how Bernstein and Woodward broke the story that brought about the President's downfall. This is the reporting that changed the American presidency.

At least when she listens to their talk, she feels the stirrings of hope...Hesitantly, Jinga grows to trust the outsiders. There is Sri, who brings with her life-saving medicines and knowledge of how to use them. And there is Ned, who talks of taking charge of one's own destiny, and fighting those who would stand in the way. It is almost too late when Jinda realizes that her trust is misplaced -- that to Sri and Ned their cause is more important than the lives it would affect. Description : What do you do when someone truly "hates" you? Corgan is used to being the hero. Leader of the team that won the Virtual War, he chose for his reward to live on the Isles of Hiva, in an idyllic paradise. Idyllic until the clones, Brigand and Cyborg, arrived, that is. Life hasn't been the same for Corgan since. Now he's lucky if his former fans even remember his name. But more worrisome is that he has an enemy, a mortal enemy in the form of Brigand, who has taken over not only Corgan's mantle as the most well-known person in the Domes, but has taken Corgan's girlfriend, Sharla, away too. When Brigand tried to kill Corgan back in the Wyo-Dome and failed, Corgan thought he would be free of Brigand at last. But now the power-obsessed Brigand has followed him to Florida, determined to rule the Domes and finish Corgan off for good. Corgan escaped from Brigand once, but can he do it again? And more importantly, does he even want to escape this time? So now Corgan's got two choices. He can fight and risk getting killed or, worse, captured by Brigand. Or he can walk away and take Sharla with him...if he can figure out how to use a spacecraft that hasn't been flown in more than fifty years. Picking right up from where "The Clones" left off, this fast-paced sequel will not disappoint Gloria Skurzynski's eager fans.

Microsoft Windows Server 2003 PKI and Certificate Security [With CDROM]

Product : Microsoft Windows Server 2003 PKI and Certificate Security [With CDROM]
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : About the Technology: Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) is the foundation for all IT solutions that use security certificates, wireless networking, smart card authentication, VPNs, secure e-mail, Web SSL, EFS, and code-signing applications. IT professionals are faced with three choices; purchase costly PKI solutions from third-party companies, outsource PKI services at a considerable cost, or use the robust PKI and certificate-based security services that are already built into Windows Server 2003. Because Windows Server 2003 PKI offers certificate-based security solutions that are tightly integrated with Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Office, and Active Directory, more IT professionals are turning to Windows-based PKI and Windows-based certificate services. Until Windows Server 2003, there were no viable PKI or certificate-based security solutions other than very expensive programs from eTrust and RSA. There are currently no titles that compete directly with this book. The closest Windows book, written by the same author, is the MCSE Training Kit: Designing Network Security. One of Microsoft's big Trustworthy Computing bets was to include a robust PKI and Certificate security solution in Windows Server 2003.
