Alamo Wars

Product : Alamo Wars
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Josephine "Miss Mac" McKeever had taught English and theatre arts at Rosemont Middle School for so long that that her colleagues sometimes joked that she would die in the classroom. So when she does just that, students, teachers, and administrators are stunned. After getting over the initial shock of losing their colleague, the staff agrees that they need to do something very special to acknowledge Miss Mac's fifty-one years of dedication to the students at Rosemont and suggest naming the school's auditorium after her. When Mrs. Frymire, her long-time colleague and friend, discovers a play written by Miss Mac years before, she knows that it would be the perfect memorial to present the play, Thirteen Days to Glory: The Battle of the Alamo, in the school's auditorium named after her friend. But the teachers quickly learn that presenting a play isn't as easy as Miss Mac had always made it seem, and soon the entire school community is in an uproar as conflicts related to the play emerge. Seventh-grader and Golden Gloves boxer Marco Diaz is, at first, excited to be chosen to play Jim Bowie, the brave Texan who defended the Alamo against Santa Anna's Mexican Army. But his friend Raquel, an undocumented immigrant, calls him a sell-out because she believes the play makes heroes out of the people who stole her ancestors' land. And Sandy Martinez, Miss Mac's much younger replacement, finds the Mexican characters' dialogue not only politically incorrect but downright offensive. Miss Mac's friends, though, are adamantly opposed to making changes. Ms. Martinez also tries to convince them that giving certain students plum roles in exchange for their parents' contributions is wrong, so she ends upleaving the production in frustration. Meanwhile, rehearsals only serve to increase the tension between Marco's friend Izzy Pena and the school bully Billy Ray Cansler. And it's only a matter of time before Billy Ray corners Izzy when Marco isn't around to protect him. Weary from struggling with disruptive kids, teachers and students dropping out of the play, and parents with unreasonable expectations, everyone begins to wonder if they should just give up and cancel the production. Is it too much to expect everyone to work together to pay homage to a longtime friend and teacher?

Creating the Artful Home: The Aesthetic Movement

Product : Creating the Artful Home: The Aesthetic Movement
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Creating the Artful Home: the Aesthetic Movement and Its Influence on Home Decor covers the history of a movement that emphasized "art for art's sake"-and the influence it had on home decor. The Aesthetic Movement in America lasted just a few decades (1870-1900), and served mainly as a bridge between the high Victorian sensibility and the radical shift to the Arts & Crafts style. The movement germinated among artists who used opulent color, decorative patterning, and lavish materials simply for the aesthetic effects they could evoke. It was commonly held that a home that expressed an artful, harmonious soul would instill high aesthetic and moral merit in its inhabitants. The Aesthetic Movement in America helped to popularize the idea that everyone should be able to enjoy beautiful, well-made homes and furnishings-not just the very wealthy. Artful homes could be composed from brilliant antique store finds, discriminating department store purchases, and gems hand-made by the ladies of the house. It was the moment when people embraced the idea that only a beautiful home could be a happy home. Karen Zukowski delves into the movement's establishment, evolution, and main characters, and shows how today's homes can incorporate Aesthetic principles: Through suggestion rather than statement, sensuality, massive use of symbols, and synaesthetic effects-that is, correspondence between words, colors and music. How influential designers such as Clarence Cook and Charles Eastlake popularized the idea that beautiful homes with tasteful furnishings could be available to practically everyone How today's designers, manufacturers, and retailers deploy the very same stylistic markers of the Aesthetic Movement: rich color, layered pattern and texture, mixtures of historical motifs

Sugar: A Bitterweet History

Product : Sugar: A Bitterweet History
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : A perceptive and provocative investigation of a commodity that we use every day, yet know little about "Sugar: A Bittersweet History" is a compelling and surprising look at the sweet commodity, from how it Africanized the cane fields of the Caribbean to how it fuelled the Industrial Revolution and jumpstarted the fast-food revolution. The book explores the hidden stories behind this sweet product, revealing how powerful American interests deposed Queen Lili'uokalani of Hawaii, how Hitler tried to ensure a steady supply of beet sugar when enemies threatened to cut off Germany's supply of overseas cane sugar, and how South Africa established a domestic ethanol industry in the wake of anti-apartheid sugar embargos. The book follows the history of sugar to the present day, showing how sugar played an integral role in today's fast-food revolution and made eating on the run socially acceptable. Impressively researched and commandingly written, "Sugar: A Bittersweet History" will forever change perceptions of this sweet treat.

Description : A fair and honest debate about religious responses to environmental issues should always distinguish theological principles from prudential judgments. The Cornwall Declaration and the accompanying essays in this volume were written to do just that. They were not written to provide theological rationale for current environmentalist fashion. Rather, they seek to articulate the broad Judeo-Christian theological principles concerning the environment, and to distinguish those principles from contrary ideas popular in the environmental movement.

The Chopsticks-Fork Principle

Product : The Chopsticks-Fork Principle
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Cultural Writing. Asian American Studies. THE CHOPSTICKS-FORK PRINCIPLE, A MEMOIR AND MANUAL by Cathy Bao Bean is about how she and her husband, artist Bennett Bean, raised their son biculturally, although it is evocative of far more than that "shared and separate" family journey. "Zany, moving, hilarious, and deep--not infrequently all at once--Cathy Bao Bean gives us a rollicking tour of the Bean method of merging work and play while negotiating cultural and generational divides. THE CHOPSTICKS-FORK PRINCIPLE creates a daily life far richer than its original constituent parts. Cathy Bao Bean has written a tart, feisty, whimsical and penetrating saga of the family that invented the Chopsticks-Fork Principle and then proceeded to live by it"--Celia Morris, author of Finding Celia's Place.

Description : "In 1968, at age twenty-one, I was sure I had all the answers I needed to know about teaching five classes a day in a real high school ... I had no idea how nave I was " Every teacher's career is a journey of discovery that begins with rookie insecurities and moves toward self-confidence and understanding. When Susan Van Kirk drove into little Monmouth, Illinois, in 1968-straight out of college, with her teaching degree in hand-she thought she was ready to teach English and speech to high school students. She didn't realize that, for the rest of her career, she would both teach and be taught by a town, a school, and the students who entered her life. A veteran of thirty-four years in public high school teaching, Van Kirk will take you on a passionate and unforgettable journey through one teaching life. Meet her students and experience the events that molded a rookie teacher into a veteran. This montage of stories covers the years 1968 to 2008; they describe her early fears about classroom discipline, plots to overthrow "the rookie," handing drug overdoses, the devastating first student death, and a challenge to a major Kurt Vonnegut book in her classroom.

In the Shadow of the General: Modern France and the Myth of De Gaulle

Product : In the Shadow of the General: Modern France and the Myth of De Gaulle
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In contemporary France, Charles de Gaulle has become a figure of legend, consistently acclaimed as the nation's pre-eminent "historical" figure. But paradoxes abound. For one, his personal popularity sits oddly with his social origins and professional background. Neither the nobility, nor the Catholic Church, nor the Army is particularly well-regarded in France today, as they are seen to represent antiquated traditions and values. So why, then, do the French nonetheless identify with, celebrate, and even revere this austere and devout nobleman, who remained closely wedded to military values throughout his life? In the Shadow of the General resolves this mystery and explains how de Gaulle has come to occupy such a privileged position in the French imagination. Sudhir Hazareesingh's story of how an individual life was transformed into national myth also tells a great deal about the French collective self in the twenty-first century: its fractured memory, its aspirations to greatness, and its manifold anxieties. Indeed, alongside the tale of de Gaulle's legacy, the author unfolds a much broader narrative: the story of modern France.

The Necessity of Certain Behaviors

Product : The Necessity of Certain Behaviors
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Winner of the 2011 Drue Heinz Literature Prize Shannon Cain's stories chart the treacherous territory of the illicit. They expose the absurdity of our rituals, our political correctness, our definitions of sexuality, and above all, our expectations of happiness and self-fulfillment. Cain's protagonists are destined to suffer--and sometimes enjoy--the consequences of their own restless discontent. In the title story, Lisa, a city dweller, is dissatisfied with her life and relationships. Her attempt at self-rejuvenation takes her on a hiking excursion through a foreign land. Lisa discovers a remote village where the ritualized and generous bisexual love of its inhabitants entrances her. She begins to abandon thoughts of home. In "Cultivation," Frances, a divorced mother strapped with massive credit card debt, has become an expert at growing pot. When she packs her three children and twelve pounds of homegrown into the minivan and travels cross-country to sell the stash, their journey becomes one of anguish, revelation, and ultimately transformation. "Cultivation," like many of the stories in "The Necessity of Certain Behaviors, " follows a trail of broken relationships and the unfulfilled promises of modern American life. Told in precise, evocative prose, these memorable stories illuminate the human condition from a compelling, funny, and entirely original perspective.

The Foreign Policy of the European Union: Assessing Europe's Role in the World

Product : The Foreign Policy of the European Union: Assessing Europe's Role in the World
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In this revised edition of "The Foreign Policy of the European Union" Federiga Bind and her contributors --some of the most representative scholars in the field --address theEU's relations with particular geographic regions and its policies on specific topical issues such as security and defense, as well as economic competitiveness. In a relatively short amount of time, the European Union has become one of the world's most powerful and important actors on the world stage, playing a critical role in the current geopolitical arena. The events of the Arab Spring and the Eurozone crisis, however, have come to test the EU's willingness and preparedness to tackle these challenges as a unitary actor with one single voice. The EU's internal transformations and international challenges raise a series of questions for the future of its foreign policy: Can there in fact be a cohesive "foreign policy" for a union composed of twenty-seven member states? If so, how does this foreign policy manifest? In which way has the Lisbon Treaty contributed to enhancing the EU's competencies and institutional structure inthe field of foreign policy? What are the goals and priorities of the EU's foreign policy, and what has it contributed to the development of human rights, peace, democracy, and regional integration in other parts of the world? This book addresses thesecrucial issues. Praise for the first edition "One of the most comprehensive studies of the EU foreign policy to date. The EU's foreign policy is not an easy subject to tackle, but the contributors do it in an elegant and cogent manner." --Luciano Bardi, University of Pisa, and president of the EuropeanConsortium for Political Research.

Fat Girl, Terrestrial

Product : Fat Girl, Terrestrial
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Not only the story of a colossus of a woman living in Kansas, "Fat Girl, Terrestrial" is also a meditation on God, treachery, and blind love. In Kingdom Come, Kansas, a town from which children once mysteriously disappeared, there lives a giant woman. Wallis Armstrong is not a pituitary mutant or a person battling a rare medical condition; she's just an improbably large woman ill at ease in a world built for shrimps. Paradoxically, Wallis builds miniatures of crime scenes, and her specialty is staged suicides. She constructed her first diorama as a child when a boy in her fourth-grade class went suddenly missing. Wallis's brother, Obie, believes the only explanation for his sister's amplitude is that she is the incarnation of God on Earth, and he is her one true ardent disciple. Until he too disappears. Kellie Wells's story of Wallis's odyssey through this tight-fitting world is a churlish meditation on the existence and nature of God as well as an exploration of the treachery of childhood and the destructive nature of the most blindly abiding kind of love: that of a love-struck brother for a big sister, a disciple for an unwilling prophet, and a bone-weary god for a savage and disappointing flock.

The Mama's Boy Myth: Why Keeping Our Sons Close Makes Them Stronger

Product : The Mama's Boy Myth: Why Keeping Our Sons Close Makes Them Stronger
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : A "New York Times" contributor offers a radical reexamination of a hot-button issue of the mother and son relationship and advocates the end of the "mama's boy" taboo. "New York Times" contributor Kate Stone Lombardi unveils the surprisingly close relationship between mothers and sons. Mother after mother confessed to Lombardi that her husband, brothers, and even female friends and family criticize the fact that she is "too close" to her sons. Many of these women are often startled by the strong connection they feel with their sons; but rarely do they talk about it because society tells them to push their little boys away and not "baby" them with too much cuddling and comforting. It is as if there were an existing playbook-based on gender preconceptions dating back to Freud, Oedipus, and beyond-that prescribes the way mothers and their sons should interact. Lombardi's much-needed narrative is the first and only book to share truly revealing interviews with mothers who have close relationships with their sons, as well as interviews with these women's sons and husbands. Lombardi persuasively argues that the rise of the new male-one who is more emotionally intelligent and more sensitive without being less "manly"-is directly attributable to women who are rejecting the "mama's boy" taboo. Highlighting new scientific studies, "The Mama's Boy Myth" begins a fresh story-one that will be welcomed by mothers, fathers, and sons alike.

Night of the Comet: A Novel

Product : Night of the Comet: A Novel
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : From the acclaimed author of "Letter to My Daughter" comes an engrossing coming-of-age tale that deftly conveys the hopes and heartaches of adolescence and the unfulfilled dreams that divide a family, played out against the backdrop of a small southern town in 1973. For his fourteenth birthday, Alan Broussard, Jr., receives a telescope from his father, a science teacher at the local high school who's eagerly awaiting what he promises will be the astronomical event of the century: the coming of Comet Kohoutek. For Alan Broussard, Sr.--frustrated in his job, remote from his family--the comet is a connection to his past and a bridge to his son, with whom he's eager to share his love for the stars. But the only celestial body Junior has any interest in is his captivating new neighbor and classmate, Gabriella Martello, whose bedroom sits within eyeshot of his telescope's lens. Meanwhile, his mother, Lydia, sees the comet--and her husband's obsession with it--as one more thing that keeps her from the bigger, brighter life she once imagined for herself far from the swampy environs ofTerrebonne, Louisiana. With Kohoutek drawing ever closer, the family begins to crumble under the weight of expectations, until a startling turn of events will leave both father and son much less certain about the laws that govern their universe. Illuminating and unforgettable, "The Night of the Comet "is a novel about the perils of growing up, the longing for connection, and the idea that love and redemptioncan be found among the stars. Praise for George Bishop's "Letter to My Daughter" "A first novel of immense power . . . George Bishop is a novelist to keep your eye on."--Pat Conroy, author of "South of Broad" "Gripping . . . Bishop] somehow gets into a teenage girl's head and roams around there like a native. You believe in Laura; her voice never hits a false note."--"Star-News" (Wilmington, N.C.) "George Bishop writes "Letter to My Daughter" with a keen eye, an open heart, and a lot of love. I am sure I will return to it again as a cautionary tale and a parable of forgiveness."--Adriana Trigiani, author of" The Shoemaker's Wife" "Before you sit down to read this book, put aside a few hours or else you'll miss some appointments. Product : The US Army's First, Last, and Only All-Black Rangers: The 2D Ranger Infantry Company (Airborne) in the Korean War, 1950-1951
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : The 2nd Ranger Infantry Company (Airborne) was the first and only all-black Ranger unit in the history of the United States Army. The company's life span covered ten months, from selection and training through a seven-month combat deployment in Korea, after which the unit was deactivated. The 2nd and 4th Rangers were among the units initially assigned to the Eighth Army and were considered to be "combat ready." The 2nd Ranger Company battled North Korean and Communist Chinese Forces near Tangyang, Majori-ri, and Chechon. The 2nd Ranger Company conducted the first airborne assault in Ranger history near the town of Munsan-ni and executed the heroic attack and defense of Hill 581. The men of the 2nd Ranger Company demonstrated courage, served with honor, and achieved a magnificent combat record. Edward Posey's The US Army's First, Last, and Only All-Black Rangers: The 2nd Ranger Infantry Company (Airborne) in the Korea War, 1950-1951 is the first complete history of this elite all-volunteer unit whose members were drawn from the 3rd Battalion of the 505th Airborne Infantry Regiment and the 80th Airborne Anti-Aircraft Battalion. As a member of the unit, Posey bases his account on firsthand experience, official records, interviews with survivors, and other material to produce a rich and worthy addition to the growing literature on the Korean War. Posey's study explains the obstacles these patriotic men faced, their sacrifices, and their courageous actions on the far side of the world. Finally, more than fifty years after the end of the war, the world will learn the true story of the United States Army's first, only, and last all-black Ranger unit. About the Author: Master Sergeant (Ret) Edward L. Posey joined the US Army in 1947. After serving with Company L, 3rd Battalion, 505th Airborne Infantry Regiment, he volunteered for airborne training with the Rangers in 1950 and served with distinction in the Korean War (where he was wounded). Sergeant Posey retired from the service in 1969. In 2002, he was inducted in the Ranger Hall of Fame for his dedication to duty and distinguished military career. REVIEWS "A labor of love by surviving members of this unit in the Korean War, an all-volunteer unit that came together when President Truman was putting an end to the segregated military. Told in the first person and not very polished, this is still a record of a transitional time that tested all concerned. Many readers will appreciate this addition to Korean War studies."Library Journal, 06/2009

Leaving the Ivory Tower: The Causes and Consequences of Departure from Doctoral Study

Product : Leaving the Ivory Tower: The Causes and Consequences of Departure from Doctoral Study
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Graduate schools have faced attrition rates of approximately 50 percent for the past 40 years. They have tried to address the problem by focusing on student characteristics and by assuming that if they could make better, more informed admissions decisions, attrition rates would drop. Yet high attrition rates persist and may in fact be increasing. Leaving the Ivory Tower thus turns the issue around and asks what is wrong with the structure and process of graduate education. Based on hard evidence drawn from a survey of 816 completers and noncompleters and on interviews with noncompleters, high- and low-Ph.D productive faculty, and directors of graduate study, this book locates the root cause of attrition in the social structure and cultural organization of graduate education.

Global Activism, Global Media

Product : Global Activism, Global Media
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Radical political activist movements are growing all the time. To reach a wider audience each organisation has formed networks and websites, exploiting new communications technologies as well as conventional media to get its message across. This is often very successful: activist politics have come to influence 'mainstream' politics over fundamental issues such as trade, gender relations, the environment and war. This book brings together activists and academics in one volume, to explore the theory and practice of global activism's relation to all forms of media, mainstream and otherwise. The contributors examine how global activism is represented in the mainstream press and explain the strategies that activists adopt to spread their own ideas. Investigating Indymedia and internet activism, they show how transformations in communications technology offer new possibilities, and explain how activists have successfully used and developed their own media. Case studies and topics include the world social forums, an example of a campaign from the NGO Action Aid, a campaign strategy from an internet activist, Greenpeace and the Brent Spar conflict, the World Development Movement and representations in the mainstream press, the Independent Media Centre, transgender activism on the net, Amnesty International, Oxfam and the internet.

How the Other Half Lives: Studies Among the Tenements of New York

Product : How the Other Half Lives: Studies Among the Tenements of New York
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Since 1959 The John Harvard Library has been instrumental in publishing essential American writings in authoritative editions. Jacob Riis's pioneering work of photojournalism takes its title from Rabelais's Pantagruel: "One half of the world knoweth not how the other half liveth; considering that no one has yet written of that Country." An anatomy of New York City's slums in the 1880s, it vividly brought home to its first readers through the powerful combination of text and images the squalid living conditions of "the other half," who might well have inhabited another country. The book pricked the conscience of its readers and raised the tenement into a symbol of intransigent social difference. As Alan Trachtenberg makes clear in his introduction, it is a book that still speaks powerfully to us today of social injustice. Except for the modernization of spelling and punctuation, the John Harvard Library edition of "How the Other Half Lives" reproduces the text of the first published book version of November 1890. For this edition, prints have been made from Riis's original photographs now in the archives of the Museum of the City of New York. Endnotes aid the contemporary reader.

George Ball: Behind the Scenes in U.S. Foreign Policy

Product : George Ball: Behind the Scenes in U.S. Foreign Policy
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Diplomat and "wise man" George Ball wielded enormous influence in American foreign policy for more than forty years. Best known for his dissent from U.S. Vietnam policy when he was under secretary of state during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, he also helped those administrations formulate policy concerning the European Community, the Congo, the Cuban missile crisis, and Cyprus. His last formal appointment was in 1968 as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, but he continued to advise and unofficially assist presidents and members of the American political elite for another twenty-five years, often taking contrary and critical positions on the major issues of the day. In this book James Bill offers fascinating new insights into the inner workings of foreign policy by examining Ball's career and the political problems with which he grappled. Drawing on Ball's personal archive as well as extensive interviews with Ball and with dozens of his associates, Bill traces Ball's involvement with foreign policy. He begins in the 1940S, when Ball was a close associate of Jean Monnet, chief architect of the European Community, and ends with Ball's death in 1994. He also chronicles Ball's forty-year involvement as a founding member of the Bilderberg group, an international clique of powerful European and American leaders. The book stresses a seldom-recognized dimension of the U.S. foreign policymaking process: the importance of the second tier of officialdom, the level just below that of cabinet secretary. And it provides a thoughtful comparison of the realpolitik model of statesmanship practiced by Henry Kissinger and the phronesis practiced by Ball, who was a prudent statesman guidedby practical wisdom within a moral framework.

Handbook to Life in Renaissance Europe

Product : Handbook to Life in Renaissance Europe
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : The word renaissance means "rebirth," and the most obvious example of this phenomenon was the regeneration of Europe's classical Roman roots. The Renaissance began in northern Italy in the late 14th century and culminated in England in the early 17th century. Emphasis on the dignity of man (though not of woman) and on human potential distinguished the Renaissance from the previous Middle Ages. In poetry and literature, individual thought and action were prevalent, while depictions of the human form became a touchstone of Renaissance art. In science and medicine the macrocosm and microcosm of the human condition inspired remarkable strides in research and discovery, and the Earth itself was explored, situating Europeans within a wider realm of possibilities. Organized thematically, the Handbook to Life in Renaissance Europe covers all aspects of life in Renaissance Europe: History; religion; art and visual culture; architecture; literature and language; music; warfare; commerce; exploration and travel; science and medicine; education; daily life.

Wired Shut: Copyright and the Shape of Digital Culture

Product : Wired Shut: Copyright and the Shape of Digital Culture
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Winner, ICA 2009 Outstanding Book Award given by the International Communication Association. and Winner, 2009 CITASA Book Award given by the Communication and Information Technologies Section of the American Sociological Association While the public and the media have been distracted by the story of Napster, warnings about the evils of "piracy," and lawsuits by the recording and film industries, the enforcement of copyright law in the digital world has quietly shifted from regulating copying to regulating the design of technology. Lawmakers and commercial interests are pursuing what might be called a technical fix: instead of specifying what can and cannot be done legally with a copyrighted work, this new approach calls for the strategic use of encryption technologies to build standards of copyright directly into digital devices so that some uses are possible and others rendered impossible. In "Wired Shut, " Tarleton Gillespie examines this shift to "technical copy protection" and its profound political, economic, and cultural implications. Gillespie reveals that the real story is not the technological controls themselves but the political, economic, and cultural arrangements being put in place to make them work. He shows that this approach to digital copyright depends on new kinds of alliances among content and technology industries, legislators, regulators, and the courts, and is changing the relationship between law and technology in the process. The film and music industries, he claims, are deploying copyright in order to funnel digital culture into increasingly commercial patterns that threaten to undermine the democratic potential of a network society. In this broad context, Gillespie examines three recent controversies over digital copyright: the failed effort to develop copy protection for portable music players with the Strategic Digital Music Initiative (SDMI); the encryption system used in DVDs, and the film industry's legal response to the tools that challenged them; and the attempt by the FCC to mandate the "broadcast flag" copy protection system for digital television. In each, he argues that whether or not such technical constraints ever succeed, the political alignments required will profoundly shape the future of cultural expression in a digital age.

Description : An inspiring story of the epic 2008 floods-- and one devastated community's will to rebuild Every year, flooding wreaks havoc across much of the Midwest. But the floods of 2008 were on a scale unlike anything seen in generations. From Minnesota to Missouri, Illinois to Iowa, the "Thousand Year Floods" of 2008--as some climatologists called them--caused tens of billions of dollars of damage. The human stories associated with this epic event that affected the Mississippi River and its tributaries are riveting. "The 1,000-Year Flood" is a powerful tale of heroism, of heart-wrenching loss, and of hope. Looking at the epic events of the summer of 2008--and, in particular, at the devastated city of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and its will to rebuild--Stephen Lyons weaves a compelling and inspiring narrative set against the backdrop of a millennium of natural disasters in the region. He asks: What does the flooding mean for residents who face it year after year? Are the affected areas ignored because they're fly-over states?

War and Human Nature

Product : War and Human Nature
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Why did President John F. Kennedy choose a strategy of confrontation during the Cuban missile crisis even though his secretary of defense stated that the presence of missiles in Cuba made no difference? Why did large numbers of Iraqi troops surrender during the Gulf War even though they had been ordered to fight and were capable of doing so? Why did Hitler declare war on the United States knowing full well the power of that country? "War and Human Nature" argues that new findings about the way humans are shaped by their inherited biology may help provide answers to such questions. This seminal work by former Defense Department official Stephen Peter Rosen contends that human evolutionary history has affected the way we process the information we use to make decisions. The result is that human choices and calculations may be very different from those predicted by standard models of rational behavior. This notion is particularly true in the area of war and peace, Rosen contends. Human emotional arousal affects how people learn the lessons of history. For example, stress and distress influence people's views of the future, and testosterone levels play a role in human social conflict. This thought-provoking and timely work explores the mind that has emerged from the biological sciences over the last generation. In doing so, it helps shed new light on many persistent puzzles in the study of war.

Description : Most people know the story Jesus told of the prodigal son-the child who demanded his inheritance and then threw it away on wild living. But there were two sons in the story: the older son watched events unfold and told his father, "I stayed with you all these years and you never threw a party for me " Those who grew up in a family with a prodigal understand that cry. Sue Thompson shares her own story of struggle and hope in The Prodigal Brother. She offers ways to heal the ache of feeling second place in a parent's affections and attention, and writes with sensitivity about forgiving a wayward brother or sister without excusing the behavior. Anyone who's ever been "the good kid" will find empathy and encouragement to unload the emotional baggage of growing up with a prodigal in the family. Many of us grew up in families where one of our siblings was the favorite child-either because that one did everything right in his parents' eyes or because he was so needy. Whichever the case, Sue Thompson gives practical suggestions from her own life experiences. Whether you are the good one or the neglected one, you will find fresh insight in this eye-opening book. Complexity Demystified: A Guide for Practitioners

Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Practitioners often say: 'We need to do something differently but are not sure what to do or how to do it' and 'Scientists explain complexity but don't tell you what to do in practical terms'. This book has been written to offer solutions for these practitioners - to provide an Approach for 'putting complexity to work'. Practice is, de facto, determined by changing contexts. In a specific instance, what needs doing will depend on the circumstances, and cannot be bounded or decided in advance. But when most auditors, donors or managers demand tangible, target-driven results within a fixed time frame, how can practitioners convince them that working with the open principles of complexity will lead to more successful and sustainable solutions? This book is not 'yet another' complexity book. What it offers is an in-depth, systematic, Framework that practitioners can use to focus on the dynamic phenomena already active in their working context, to be able to shape and influence these phenomena 'on the fly'. The authors present six case studies, including the UK Fuel Crisis (2000) and the 2010 Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill. Their Approach reveals a clear understanding of the stresses and strains that were felt throughout the crises and how these might have been handled differently had an appreciation of the underlying complexity been part of standard practice.Drawn from their own experiences and those of other practitioners, and to bridge the gap between theory, experience and practice, the authors have produced a clear and erudite 'bible' for realising the inherent benefits of 'putting complexity to work'.

Harris and Sadler present information showing Morley used his archaeological skills and contacts to covertly spy for the U. S. Office of Naval Intelligence during World War I. His primary charge was to detect and report German activity along the more than 1200 miles of eastern Central American and Mexican coastlines. To aid him in this special "fieldwork," Morley recruited other archaeologists, assigned them specific territories in which to work, and, together, they maintained a constant vigil. "In this remarkable story of a remarkable man and his colorful associates, Harris and Sadler bring to vivid life an unknown story of early American intelligence. They illuminate the start of today's vast spy apparatus. A lively, scholarly, and useful job."--David Kahn, author of "The Codebreakers and Hitler's Spies." "This is superior scholarship. Rumors and allegations existed about anthropologists acting as spies, but this is the first credible account. Sadler and Harris have written the most significant book available on U.S. intelligence during World War I in Latin America. For historians of intelligence agencies, this is a must read volume."--William H. Beezley, University of Arizona " Charles Harris and Ray Sadler] have written the most significant book available on U.S. intelligence during World War I in Latin America. For historians of intelligence agencies, this is a must read volume."--William H. Beezley, professor of history, University of Arizona, and director of the Oaxaca (Mexico) Graduate Field School in Modern Mexican History

Race and Empire

Product : Race and Empire
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Readers at the beginning of the twenty-first century are probably more racially self-aware than any other generation has been. Like the relationship between gender and history, that between race and history is perceived to be of the utmost importance by young people and the older generation because it has left such a controversial legacy in the shape of hopes for multiculturalism, diversity, and tolerance. This new Seminar Study provides an introduction to the intricate and far-reaching relationship between attitudes toward racial difference and imperial expansion. Imperialism is a topic that can be approached from many different angles. By concentrating on the topical issue of race, this book takes a very different approach from the more familiar political or economic studies of imperial expansion.

Race, Riots, and Roller Coasters: The Struggle Over Segregated Recreation in America

Product : Race, Riots, and Roller Coasters: The Struggle Over Segregated Recreation in America
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Throughout the twentieth century, African Americans challenged segregation at amusement parks, swimming pools, and skating rinks not only in pursuit of pleasure but as part of a wider struggle for racial equality. Well before the Montgomery bus boycott, mothers led their children into segregated amusement parks, teenagers congregated at forbidden swimming pools, and church groups picnicked at white-only parks. But too often white mobs attacked those who dared to transgress racial norms. In "Race, Riots, and Roller Coasters," Victoria W. Wolcott tells the story of this battle for access to leisure space in cities all over the United States.Contradicting the nostalgic image of urban leisure venues as democratic spaces, Wolcott reveals that racial segregation was crucial to their appeal. Parks, pools, and playgrounds offered city dwellers room to exercise, relax, and escape urban cares. These gathering spots also gave young people the opportunity to mingle, flirt, and dance. As cities grew more diverse, these social forms of fun prompted white insistence on racially exclusive recreation. Wolcott shows how black activists and ordinary people fought such infringements on their right to access public leisure. In the face of violence and intimidation, they swam at white-only beaches, boycotted discriminatory roller rinks, and picketed Jim Crow amusement parks. When African Americans demanded inclusive public recreational facilities, white consumers abandoned those places. Many parks closed or privatized within a decade of desegregation. Wolcott's book tracks the decline of the urban amusement park and the simultaneous rise of the suburban theme park, reframing these shifts within the civil rights context.Filled with detailed accounts and powerful insights, "Race, Riots, and Roller Coasters" brings to light overlooked aspects of conflicts over public accommodations. This eloquent history demonstrates the significance of leisure in American race relations.

Signatures of the Visible

Product : Signatures of the Visible
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In such celebrated works as Postmodernism: The Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism, Fredric Jameson has established himself as one of America's most observant cultural commentators. In Signatures of the Visible, Jameson turns his attention to cinema - the artform that has replaced the novel as the defining cultural form of our time. Historicizing a form that has flourished in a post-modern and anti-historical culture, he explores the allegorical and ideological dimensions of such films as The Shining, Dog Day Afternoon and the works of Alfred Hitchcock, among many others. Fifteen years on from its original publication, this remains a piercing and original analysis of film from a writer and thinker whose influence continues to be felt long after that of the fashionable post-modernists he has always critiqued.

Reinventing Liberal Christianity

Product : Reinventing Liberal Christianity
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In this provocative book Theo Hobson addresses the current crisis of liberal Christianity. In past years liberal Christianity challenged centuries of authoritarian tradition and had great political influence. It played a major role in the founding of the United States and gave rise to the secular liberalism that we take for granted. But liberal Christianity today is widely dismissed as a watering-down of the faith, and more conservative forms of Christianity are increasingly dominant. Can the liberal Christian tradition recover its influence?Hobson puts forth a bold theory about why liberal Christianity collapsed and how it can be reinvented. He argues that a simple revival is not possible, because liberal Christianity consists of two traditions -- a good tradition that must be salvaged and a bad tradition that must be repudiated. "Reinventing Liberal Christianity" untangles these two traditions with a fascinating survey of Christian thought from the Reformation to the present and, further, aims to transform liberal Christianity through the rediscovery of faith and ritual.

A Time for Embracing: Reclaiming Reconciliation

Product : A Time for Embracing: Reclaiming Reconciliation
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Has sacramental reconciliation disappeared from the horizon of Catholic practice? Has "confession" been extinguished from your practice of the faith? Have you noticed a marked change in the way in which you have become reconciled to God and the Church community over the course of time? These questions and others are addressed in Julia Upton's study of sacramental reconciliation. Her concern is that the sacrament of reconciliation - through which the darkness of sin is illumined by the healing light of Christ's forgiveness - is an endangered species. In sacramental reconciliation the sinner experiences the tender, healing, welcoming embrace of God, which is what Upton regards as endangered. Upton's is a holistic approach to sacramental reconciliation that involves studying data from anthropology, psychology, and sociology, and integrating that with data from Scripture, history, and theology.

Story of a Storm: A Book about Hurricane Katrina

Product : Story of a Storm: A Book about Hurricane Katrina
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : A simple truth...The birds knew. The birds knew Hurricane Katrina was coming. So begins Story of a Storm, a picture book by Reona Visser and children of Coast Episcopal School about the hurricane and its effects on cities, families, and countless individuals. The story is told through creative and collaborative collage art with simple messages that express profound emotions and describe the devastating effects of the storm. The story starts with preparation and evacuation, moves through the stresses of being displaced and not knowing the wereabouts of loved ones or the condition of one's home and belongings, and ends with a message of the persistence of hope. Reona Visser, a 5th grade teacher at Coast Episcopal School, while driving in bumper-to-bumper traffic away from the approaching Katrina, was compelled to create a book about this devastating storm. The result was 30 young children collaborating on collages that create this beautiful account of that terrible day in Aug 2005.
