Escort Girl: A Personal Memoir

Product : Escort Girl: A Personal Memoir
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In this often shocking memoir, Melodie Nelson vividly tells the story of her three years working as a female escort. Having started with webcam autoeroticism to earn extra money, she soon found virtual sex unfulfilling and decided to join an escort service. Dismissing clich's and stereotypes, her book recounts in intimate detail her experiences, both good and bad. Melodie describes her clients, the ones she liked, the ones she didn't, the ones who were rough, the ones who were submissive. From maintaining the fantasy bedroom she created to play "Barbie Doll" (among other roles) for her clients to the mundane issues of scheduling and personal hygiene, we get to know her daily routines. She describes her fellow "women of the night," their personalities, how they dressed for their jobs, and how they spent their time between tricks. Melodie details the impact her job had on her relationships with her mother, boyfriend, and friends. Her memoir is an unvarnished glimpse of a world many talk about but few understand.

A History of Philosophy in the Twentieth Century

Product : A History of Philosophy in the Twentieth Century
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In A History of Philosophy in the Twentieth Century, Christian Delacampagne reviews the discipline's divergent and dramatic course and shows that its greatest figures, even the most unworldly among them, were deeply affected by events of their time. From Ludwig Wittgenstein, whose famous Tractatus was actually composed in the trenches during World War I, to Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger -- one who found himself barred from public life with Hitler's coming to power, the other a member of the Nazi party who later refused to repudiate German war crimes. From Bertrand Russell, whose lifelong pacifism led him to turn from logic and mathematics to social and moral questions, and Jean-Paul Sartre, who made philosophy an occasion for direct and personal political engagement, to Rudolf Carnap, a committed socialist, and Karl Popper, a resolute opponent of Communism. From the Vienna Circle and the Frankfurt School to the contemporary work of philosophers as variously minded as Jacques Derrida, Jrgen Habermas, and Hilary Putnam. The thinking of these philosophers, and scores of others, cannot be understood without being placed in the context of the times in which they lived.

Sprinting from the Graveyard

Product : Sprinting from the Graveyard
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Sprinting from the Graveyard is a brilliant and ghastly series of poems by Serbian poet Goran Simic. Based on Simic's three harrowing years spent with his muslim wife and their two young children during the seige of Sarajevo, the poems are remarkably unpolitical, and instead are offered in the vein of simple observation with touches of irony, often as plain as a simple newspaper report. This powerful style makes each poem all the more moving and dreadful as it drives home the day-to-day detail of resident's lives, such as the bleak laughter of an eyewitness, and accounts of the incredible energy summoned up by those struggling to move on. Translated into English by acclaimed poet David Harsent, this compelling collection brings to vivid life the candid face of war.

Sentimental Collaborations-PB

Product : Sentimental Collaborations-PB
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : During the 1992 Democratic Convention and again while delivering Harvard University's commencement address two years later, Vice President Al Gore shared with his audience a story that showed the effect of sentiment in his life. In telling how an accident involving his son had provided him with a revelation concerning the compassion of others, Gore effectively reconstructed himself as a typical, middle-class American for whom sympathy can lead to salvation. This contemporary reiteration of mid-nineteenth-century American sentimental discourse proves to be a fruitful point of departure for Mary Louise Kete's argument that sentimentality has been an important and recurring form of cultural narrative that has helped to shape middle-class American life. Many scholars have written about the sentimental novel as a primarily female genre and have stressed its negative ideological aspects. Kete finds that in fact many men--from writers to politicians--participated in nineteenth-century sentimental culture. Importantly, she also recovers the utopian dimension of the phenomenon, arguing that literary sentimentality, specifically in the form of poetry, is the written trace of a broad cultural discourse that Kete calls "sentimental collaboration"--an exchange of sympathy in the form of gifts that establishes common cultural or intellectual ground. Kete reads the work of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Mark Twain, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Lydia Huntley Sigourney with an eye toward the deployment of sentimentality for the creation of Americanism, as well as for political and abolitionist ends. Finally, she locates the origins of sentimental collaboration in the activities of ordinary people who participated in mourning rituals--writing poetry, condolence letters, or epitaphs--to ease their personal grief. "Sentimental Collaborations" significantly advances prevailing scholarship on Romanticism, antebellum culture, and the formation of the American middle class. It will be of interest to scholars of American studies, American literature, cultural studies, and women's studies.

Memoirs of a Breton Peasant

Product : Memoirs of a Breton Peasant
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : A fascinating document of an extraordinary life, Memoirs of A Breton Peasant reads with the liveliness of a novel and bristles with the vigor of an opinionated autodidact from the very lowest level of peasant society. Brittany during the nineteenth century was a place seemingly frozen in the Middle Ages, backwards by most French standards; formal education among rural society was either unavailable or dismissed as unnecessary, while the church and local myth defined most people's reasoning and motivation. Jean-Marie Deguignet is unique not only as a literate Breton peasant, but in his skepticism for the church, his interest in science, astronomy and languages, and for his keen--often caustic--observations of the world and people around him. Born into rural poverty in 1834, Deguignet escapes Brittany by joining the French Army in 1854, and over the next fourteen years he fights in the Crimean war, attends Napoleon III's coronation ceremonies, supports Italy's liberation struggle, and defends the hapless French puppet emperor Maximilian in Mexico. He teaches himself Latin, French, Italian and Spanish and reads extensively on history, philosophy, politics, and literature. He returns home to live as a farmer and tobacco-seller, eventually falling back into dire poverty. Throughout the tale, Deguignet's freethinking, almost anarchic views put him ahead of his time and often (sadly, for him) out of step with his contemporaries. Deguignet's voluminous journals (nearly 4,000 pages in total) were discovered in a farmhouse in Brittany a century after they were written. This narrative was drawn from them and became a surprise bestseller when published in France in 1998.

After the Evil: Christianity and Judaism in the Shadow of the Holocaust

Product : After the Evil: Christianity and Judaism in the Shadow of the Holocaust
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : The evil of the holocaust demands a radical rethink of the traditional Christian understanding of Judaism. This does not mean jettisoning Christianity's deepest convictions in order to make it conform to Judaism. Rather, Richard Harries develops the work of recent Jewish scholarship to discern resonances between central Christian and Jewish beliefs. This thought-provoking book offers fresh approaches to contentious and sensitive issues. A key chapter on the nature of forgiveness is sympathetic to the Jewish charge that Christians talk much too easily about forgiveness. Another chapter on suffering in Judaism and Christianity rejects the usual stereotypes and argues for important common ground, for example in the idea that God suffers in the suffering of his people. There are also chapters on the state of Israel and the place of Jerusalem in Christian and Jewish thought. Richard Harries argues that the basic covenant is not with either Judaism or Christianity but with humanity. These, like other religions, are different, distinctive voices in response to God's primal affirmation of human life, which for Christians is achieved and given in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In the light of this the author maintains--controversially --that Christians should not be trying to convert Jews to Christianity. Rather Jews and Christians should stand together and build on the great amount they have in common to work together for a better world.

Work and Politics: The Division of Labour in Industry

Product : Work and Politics: The Division of Labour in Industry
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Work and Politics develops a historical and comparative sociology of workplace relations in industrial capitalist societies. Professor Sabel argues that the system of mass production using specialized machines and mostly unskilled workers was the result of the distribution of power and wealth in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Great Britain and the United States, not of an inexorable logic of technological advance. Once in place, this system created the need for workers with systematically different ideas about the acquisition of skill and the desirability of long-term employment. Professor Sabel shows how capitalists have played on naturally existing division in the workforce in order to match workers with diverse ambitions to jobs in different parts of the labor market. But he also demonstrates the limits, different from work group to work group, of these forms of collaboration.

Cancer Biomarkers: The Promise and Challenges of Improving Detection and Treatment

Product : Cancer Biomarkers: The Promise and Challenges of Improving Detection and Treatment
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Many cancer patients are diagnosed at a stage in which the cancer is too far advanced to be cured, and most cancer treatments are effective in only a minority of patients undergoing therapy. Thus, there is tremendous opportunity to improve the outcome for people with cancer by enhancing detection and treatment approaches. Biomarkers will be instrumental in making that transition. Advances in biotechnology and genomics have given scientists new hope that biomarkers can be used to improve cancer screening and detection, to improve the drug development process, and to enhance the effectiveness and safety of cancer care by allowing physicians to tailor treatment for individual patients—an approach known as personalized medicine. However, progress overall has been slow, despite considerable effort and investment, and there are still many challenges and obstacles to overcome before this paradigm shift in oncology can become a reality.

Saints, Sinners, Saviors: Strong Black Women in African American Literature

Product : Saints, Sinners, Saviors: Strong Black Women in African American Literature
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : "Saints, Sinners, Saviors: Strong Black Women in African American Literature" explores the idea of strength as a frequently contradictory and damaging trait for black women characters in major literary works of the 20th century. Looking at work by Hansberry, Morrison, Bambara, West, Gaines, Reed, and others, Trudier Harris shows how writers draw upon popular images of African American women in producing what they believe to be safe literary representations. She argues forcefully that the portrayal of women's character as strong is problematic in African American literature, and this pattern has become so pronounced that it has stifled the literature.

The Artless Jew: Medieval and Modern Affirmations and Denials of the Visual

Product : The Artless Jew: Medieval and Modern Affirmations and Denials of the Visual
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Conventional wisdom holds that Judaism is indifferent or even suspiciously hostile to the visual arts due to the Second Commandment's prohibition on creating "graven images," the dictates of monotheism, and historical happenstance. This intellectual history of medieval and modern Jewish attitudes toward art and representation overturns the modern assumption of Jewish iconophobia that denies to Jewish culture a visual dimension. Kalman Bland synthesizes evidence from medieval Jewish philosophy, mysticism, poetry, biblical commentaries, travelogues, and law, concluding that premodern Jewish intellectuals held a positive, liberal understanding of the Second Commandment and did, in fact, articulate a certain Jewish aesthetic. He draws on this insight to consider modern ideas of Jewish art, revealing how they are inextricably linked to diverse notions about modern Jewish identity that are themselves entwined with arguments over Zionism, integration, and anti-Semitism. Through its use of the past to illuminate the present and its analysis of how the present informs our readings of the past, this book establishes a new assessment of Jewish aesthetic theory rooted in historical analysis. Authoritative and original in its identification of authentic Jewish traditions of painting, sculpture, and architecture, this volume will ripple the waters of several disciplines, including Jewish studies, art history, medieval and modern history, and philosophy.

Nanoethics: Big Ethical Issues with Small Technology

Description : Nanotechnology "manipulates matter at the atomic level. It leads to innovative processes and products that are revolutionizing many areas of modern life. Huge amounts of public funds are being invested in the science, yet the public has little understanding of the technology or its ethical implications. Indeed, the ethical, social, and political dimensions of nanotechnology are only beginning to receive the attention they require outside of science fiction contexts. Surveillance devices may become so small that they are practically invisible to the naked eye, raising concerns about privacy. Nanomedicine may lead to the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic devices, yet anxieties have been raised about the impact of "nanobots" circulating in our bodies. Military applications, or misuses, of nanotechnology raise other concerns. This book explores in an accessible and informative way how nanotechnology is likely to impact the lives of ordinary people in the coming years and why ethical reflection on nanotechnology is needed now. >

Hollywood Highbrow: From Entertainment to Art

Product : Hollywood Highbrow: From Entertainment to Art
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Today's moviegoers and critics generally consider some Hollywood products--even some blockbusters--to be legitimate works of art. But during the first half century of motion pictures very few Americans would have thought to call an American movie "art." Up through the 1950s, American movies were regarded as a form of popular, even lower-class, entertainment. By the 1960s and 1970s, however, viewers were regularly judging Hollywood films by artistic criteria previously applied only to high art forms. In "Hollywood Highbrow," Shyon Baumann for the first time tells how social and cultural forces radically changed the public's perceptions of American movies just as those forces were radically changing the movies themselves. The development in the United States of an appreciation of film as an art was, Baumann shows, the product of large changes in Hollywood and American society as a whole. With the postwar rise of television, American movie audiences shrank dramatically and Hollywood responded by appealing to richer and more educated viewers. Around the same time, European ideas about the director as artist, an easing of censorship, and the development of art-house cinemas, film festivals, and the academic field of film studies encouraged the idea that some American movies--and not just European ones--deserved to be considered art.

Sweet Bamboo: A Memoir of a Chinese American Family

Product : Sweet Bamboo: A Memoir of a Chinese American Family
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : "Sweet Bamboo "is the vivid and absorbing memoir of a Chinese American family who lived in Los Angeles since the first years of the twentieth century. Lovingly recounted by the second daughter, who went on to become the first Asian American reporter for a major American newspaper, this account illuminates the many changes that occurred in the family as members increasingly became integrated into American society. While much of the attention given to Chinese immigrants has focused on the struggles of working class people, this book sheds new light on a different kind of immigrant experience--that of privileged Chinese parents and their children living in relative affluence in a predominantly white neighborhood. The family saga begins in China's Kwangtung Province, in the village of Gum Jook (Sweet Bamboo), about 31 miles south of Canton. It follows Louise Leung Larson's parents through their arranged marriage in 1898, to their arrival in Los Angeles, the birth of three daughters and five sons (named after American presidents), and her father's development of a successful herbalist business. Larson's intimate portrait of her family, her lively depiction of Los Angeles at the turn of the century, and her engaging descriptions of meals eaten, holidays celebrated, school events, visits from relatives, and much more make this a richly textured excursion into the dreams and disappointments of everyday life. The death of the author's mother in 1957 marks the end of an era for the Tom Leung family. An epilogue brings the story to the late 1980s, tracing the intermarriage of the third and fourth generations, and the family's diminishing sense of its Chinese identity. A postscript by the author's daughter, Jane Leung Larson, provides details of the fourth and fifth generations Leungs and recounts Jane's trip to China where she visited her parents' birthplaces and met relatives from both her grandmother's and grandfather's families. Taken together, these keen observations illustrate several generations' adaptation to dual cultures and the formation of a unique Chinese American sensibility.

Relational Coaching: Journeys Towards Mastering One-To-One Learning

Product : Relational Coaching: Journeys Towards Mastering One-To-One Learning
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Manfred Kets de Vries, Professor of Leadership Development, INSEAD: "The author takes us on an exciting journey to explain what coaching is all about, providing us with a roadmap that is second to none. Anyone interested in better understanding what coaching is all about, would do well to have a serious look at this book." David Megginson, Professor of Human Resources Development, Sheffield Hallam University: "From a vivid personal story just before the first chapter to the fascinating mass of data in the appendices, this book is a captivating read about the concrete particulars of coaching and the theoretical perspectives we can use to make sense of them. Erik de Haan makes a case for relational coaching and prescribes clearly what his research and the tradition within which it is embedded can tell practitioners in the field." Bruce E. Wampold, Professor of Counseling Psychology, University of Wisconsin: "I am thrilled that there is a coaching book that emphasizes the coachee and the relationship. In "Relational Coaching," Erik de Haan places the emerging profession on a strong foundation that emphasizes the interpersonal aspects of the endeavour." "Relational Coaching" is a radically different way of looking at coaching that puts the relationship, from the perspective of the coachee, at the centre. Exploring both age-old tradition and reliable studies in recent decades, "Relational Coaching" gives the modern executive coach ten commandments to help improve his or her practice. The book demonstrates how each of these commandments is underpinned by sound quantitative research. The book begins by giving a complete overview of the profession and the latest developments in coaching. The second part of the book presents new quantitative and qualitative research into effects and experiences of coaching. Part three contains an introduction to the activities that make a good coach and the mechanisms used to verify coaches' understanding of their profession. Other topics covered include training, accreditation, supervision and recommended literature.

Hollywood Reborn: Movie Stars of the 1970s

Product : Hollywood Reborn: Movie Stars of the 1970s
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Weary from the turbulent sixties, America entered the 1970s hoping for calm. Instead, the war in Vietnam and its troubled aftermath persisted, the Watergate scandal unfolded, and continuing social unrest at home and abroad provided the backdrop for the new decade. The scene was similar in Hollywood, as it experienced greater upheaval than at any point since the coming of sound. As the studio and star systems declined, actors had more power than ever, and because many had become fiercely politicized by the temper of the times, the movies they made were often more challenging than before. Thus, just when it might have faded out, Hollywood was reborn--but what was the nature of this rebirth? "Hollywood Reborn" examines this question, with contributors focusing on many of the eraA a a s key figures--noteworthy actors such as Jane Fonda, Al Pacino, Faye Dunaway, and Warren Beatty, and unexpected artists, among them Donald Sutherland, Shelley Winters, and Divine. Each essay offers new perspectives through the lens of an important star, illuminating in the process some of the most fascinating and provocative films of the decade.

Double Standards: The Rudolf Hess Cover-Up

Product : Double Standards: The Rudolf Hess Cover-Up
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : For over 60 years, there has been an unprecedented cover-up by both the British Establishment and successive generations of historians about the flight of Hitler's Deputy Rudolf Hess to Scotland in May 1941. It has long been dismissed as the misguided attempt of a madman to make contact with a non-existent British peace party. Based on entirely new material from eyewitnesses, hitherto inaccessible archives, and intelligence sources, Double Standards reveals that: -- Despite official denials, Hess flew to Britain with Hitler's full knowledge. -- There was a substantial British peace party in 1941, which included most of the aristocracy -- and the Royal Family. -- There is substantial evidence that the prisoner who died in Spandau prison was not the real Rudolf Hess. -- The fate of the real Deputy Fuhrer was inextricably linked with that of the Duke of Kent. -- Winston Churchill guilefully used Hess to influence Hitler and change Britain's fortunes in the war.

Dramatic Monologue

Product : Dramatic Monologue
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : The dramatic monologue is traditionally associated with Victorian poets such as Robert Browning and Alfred Tennyson, and is generally considered to have disappeared with the onset of modernism in the twentieth century. Glennis Byron unravels its history and argues that, contrary to belief, the monologue remains popular to this day. This far-reaching and neatly structured volume: * explores the origins of the monologue and presents a history of definitions of the term * considers the monologue as a form of social critique * explores issues at play in our understanding of the genre, such as subjectivity, gender and politics * traces the development of the genre through to the present day. Taking as example the increasingly politicized nature of contemporary poetry, the author clearly and succinctly presents an account of the monologue's growing popularity over the past twenty years.

Hero Mama: A Daughter Remembers the Father She Lost in Vietnam--And the Mother Who Held Her Family Together

Product : Hero Mama: A Daughter Remembers the Father She Lost in Vietnam--And the Mother Who Held Her Family Together
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : "Sometimes," she explained, "when a person sleeps on a pillow for a long time the feathers will mold together to make a crown ..." It's the 1960s and nine-year-old Karen Spears is living in a trailer in middle Georgia. Her father, David Spears, was killed in the Ia Drang Valley in Vietnam, and left behind three young children and a wife with a ninth-grade education. Hero Mama is the gritty, searing, and beautifully written story of what happened to this Southern family in the aftermath of a soldier's death. At first the widow Spears appeared to fall apart -- turning herself into a beer-guzzling, good-time girl, while her children responded in kind. Eventually she recognized how much her children needed her and, with mule-headed tenacity, she earned her nursing degree and bought the family a real home fashioned from bricks, rising above her own flaws to forge a better life for her kids. Now Karen Spears Zacharias pays tribute to this woman of guts and determination -- her Hero Mama -- who battled overwhelming adversity to pull her family up and make them proud of her, and of themselves. Hero Mama is also the story of the South, where ayoung girl grew up against an emotionally charged landscape of racism and bigotry, where the daughter of a fallen soldier had to face the stigma of a war nobody wanted, and where a family in crisis pulled together to achieve its own version of the American dream. It is a triumphant tale of reconciliation between a daughter and her father, a daughter and her nation, and a daughter and the people of Vietnam. It is a story for any daughter who has loved her father -- and for any daughter who has had to discover how deeply her mother really loves her.

The Bridesmaid's Survival Guide

Product : The Bridesmaid's Survival Guide
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : A laugh-out-loud look at what the author has dubbed "the walk of infamy", "The Bridesmaid's Survival Guide" is a step-by-step analysis of a rite of passage that befalls nearly all women at one time in their lives. "The Bridesmaid's Survival Guide" humorously acknowledges the plight of those women made to stuff themselves into frightful dresses to watch their friends and loved-ones ride off into the sunset toward happily-ever-after. Inspired by the author/illustrator Mary Kay McDermott's experiences as a bridesmaid herself, the book is filled with folksy, full-color cartoons that breathe life into McDermott's uproarious musings. This wry look at the excesses of modern weddings makes the perfect gift for bridesmaids from brides. Best of all, it brings a welcome dose of levity to an often arduous process, providing women with an opportunity to laugh at themselves and their newfound or remembered role.

War and American Women: Heroism, Deeds, and Controversy

Product : War and American Women: Heroism, Deeds, and Controversy
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : The Gulf War of 1991 saw 37,000 women serve in uniform who, like their predecessors, performed admirably and demonstrated courage under fire. This war and the subsequent Tailhook scandal renewed the call by feminist groups and their supporters in Congress to have the military remove, once and for all, the restrictions barring women from direct combat. While some saw this struggle as a quest for equality and opportunity in uniform, others fought just as vigorously to keep women out of combat. The 1990s saw women assigned to ships, to aircraft, and to jobs previously denied them due to an easing of the long-standing combat restrictions. This resulted in a nationwide debate which, many allege, contributed to the suicide of Admiral Jeremy Boorda in 1996. Allowing women to serve in the military during wartime has been a subject of controversy since World War I, when, for the first time in history, thousands answered the same patriotic call to duty as the men and volunteered. Unlike the men, however, these pioneers were targets of gossip and branded as "camp followers" by some. Since that time, some 3.5 million American women have served their country as spies, nurses, guerrillas, or war correspondents. Many of these volunteers were wounded or died in the line of duty, others suffered as prisoners of war--all with little or no recognition. During World War II, the military actively recruited women to fill support roles in an effort to free more able-bodied men for combat duty. This resulted in the creation of women's branches of the armed services, which enabled women to take on even greater challenges and more diversified roles than previously allowed. These new organizations included: WAACs--later WACs (Army) WAVEs (Navy) SPARs (Coast Guard) Marine Corps Women's Reserve WASPs (ferrying airplanes) These groups attracted more than 350,000 volunteers. The tradition of volunteering continued on through conflicts in Korea and Vietnam, and each time, American women met their challenges with honor and distinction. War and American Women brings to life the compelling story of the ordinary and extraordinary women who served their country in times of war. Their largely unreported and unacknowledged acts of heroism are vividly recounted by an author whose style has been described by The New York Times as "vintage Hemingway."

The DNA of God?: Newly Discovered Secrets of the Shroud of Turin

Product : The DNA of God?: Newly Discovered Secrets of the Shroud of Turin
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In 1988, radiocarbon dating showed that the Shroud of Turin was of too recent origin to be the burial cloth of Jesus. However, Dr. Leoncio Garza-Valdes has since discovered that an organic bacterial coating forms over time on ancient textiles. This coating tends to distort carbon dating results to such an extent that many ancient textiles may vastly predate normal carbon test results. Dr. Garza-Valdes's work holds great significance for archeologists-and has also bolstered the case for the authenticity of the shroud. Still more amazing has been Dr. Garza-Valdes's discovery of micro-scopic clues within the Shroud which lend credibility to the story of its biblical origins-the most startling of which is the discovery of blood remnants that contain a man's DNA. Is this blood that of Jesus of Nazareth? And if so, could the DNA within it be the DNA of God?

The Remedy: Class, Race, and Affirmative Action

Product : The Remedy: Class, Race, and Affirmative Action
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In this provocative and paradigm-shifting book, Richard D. Kahlenberg argues that affirmative action programs ought to be based not on race but on class. America's exclusive focus on race in determining how to allocate economic and educational opportunities has served only to undermine the moral legitimacy of affirmative action, the results clearly visible in the growing public sentiment to abolish such programs.Kahlenberg shows that it is time to return to affirmative action's roots, so that it works to the benefit of the truly disadvantaged, regardless of race. In a sweeping and damning analysis, Kahlenberg examines how the rationale for affirmative action has moved inexorably away from its original commitment to remedy past discrimination and instead has become a means to achieve racial diversity, even if that means giving preference to upper-middle-class blacks over poor whites. He outlines how a class-based system of affirmative action would work, why all Americans should embrace it, and how the African-American community in particular would continue to reap the benefits it needs without engendering resentment among whites.

Description : Sixteen-year-old Steve McKee watched his father die of a heart attack on the couch in their TV room. A lifelong smoker and workaholic, John McKee had been floored by a heart attack five years earlier. The McKee clan-perhaps including a demoralized John himself-had long been waiting for the other shoe to drop. At age fifty-two, Steve McKee learned that he was his father's son more than he had ever hoped-he, too, has serious cardiovascular disease. Haunted by his father's seeming surrender to the condition, McKee set out to find the man who died before the son could know him. In so doing, what might he, Steve McKee, learn of himself? Chronicling the disorienting first days following John McKee's death, "My Father's Heart" is an extraordinary story of an all-too-ordinary scenario: A father dies, a son remains, and the loss casts a long shadow across a generation. Rich in evocative detail of time, place, and family, it is a powerful memoir of love, forgiveness, and finding oneself.

Electric and Hybrid Cars: A History

Product : Electric and Hybrid Cars: A History
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Far from being a modern conception, electric cars were among the first vehicles on the road. In the formative days of the automobile, a third of cars were electric, and they challenged internal combustion engine-driven vehicles for primacy. Economic and environmental concerns have periodically revived widespread interest in electric cars and hybrid vehicles, and the quest for a non- or less-polluting vehicle that meets consumer's performance demands continues today. The story of the electric car is a long one, and it is still being written. This illustrated history of electric and hybrid vehicles covers the companies that produced various models; the politics that have surrounded them; the environmental aspects of electric and hybrid vehicles versus internal combustion engines; efforts to overcome technological challenges associated with electric vehicles; marketing strategies through the decades; and public attitudes towards these vehicles throughout their existence. An appendix lists important dates in the history of electric cars, and a glossary defines associated acronyms.

Bound and Free: A Theologian's Journey

Product : Bound and Free: A Theologian's Journey
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In our largely secular, postmodern environment, theology perhaps appears quaint and archaic. Yet Never has a thinking faith been more vital than today, says Douglas John Hall, when religious pluralism and fundamentalisms abound. Precisely because we live in a post-Christendom era, he asserts, serious religious reflection on the meaning and import of Christian faith is indispensable to renewing a sidelined church, a disoriented society, and ourselves as people of faith. Hall shows how in his fifty years of theological journeying he himself has come to see in theology a personal quest or even compulsion to dive deeply into life's deepest ambiguities, to take on the perplexity and disorientation of one's age, and to struggle to find meaning in the hiddenness of God. Christians around North America have come to depend on Douglas John Hall's writings to keep their faith honest and relevant. Now, in Bound and Free they will find a brief but earnest apology for the theological vocation as well as a personal testimony to a life of grappling with God as glimpsed in doubt, question, and quest.

Barbarians Led by Bill Gates

Product : Barbarians Led by Bill Gates
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : "Microsoft, a rather new corporation, may not have matured to the position where it understands how it should act with respect to the public interest."-U.S. District Judge Stanley Sporkin. Teamed with the daughter of one of Bill Gates's closest associates, thirteen-year Microsoft veteran Marlin Eller shows us what it was like at every step along Gates's route to world domination, making all that's been written before seem like a rough guess. If the Justice Department had Eller and Edstrom investigating the current-headline-making antitrust case, they would have on the record many of Microsoft's most respected developers directly contradicting the "authorized" version of events being presented in court. They would know the real scoop on how Windows was developed in the first place, shedding new light on the 1988 Apple v. Microsoft lawsuit over the alleged copying of the Mac. They would even know the real story of how Microsoft killed off Go Corporation, told for the first time by the man who did the deed, Marlin Eller himself. Revealing the smoke-and-mirror deals, the palms greased to help launch a product that didn't exist, and the boneyard of once-thriving competitors targeted by the Gates juggernaut, this book demonstrates with often hilariously damning detail the Microsoft muddle that passes for strategic direction, offset by Gates's uncanny ability to come from behind to crush whoever's on top.

Just a Mom

Product : Just a Mom
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : For many gay men and lesbians, Betty DeGeneres, the mother of actress Ellen DeGeneres has come to represent the mother stolen from them by homophobia. For many parents she has provided the inspiration to reconcile with their own children. In her new book, "Just a Mom," Betty talks directly to parents, children, friends, teachers, employers, and politicians in a straightforward and heartfelt manner on homophobia and the destruction it causes in loving families and society at large. She counsels parents on how to react when their child tells them he or she is gay. She advises children on how to tell their parents and when. And, most importantly, she shows how to cross the divide of intolerance so families can be whole again. Now an activist and a national figure, Betty DeGeneres is a mother first, and in "Just a Mom" she is calling for love, compassion, and reconciliation for all gay men, lesbians, and their families from the bottom of a mother's heart. Betty DeGeneres first gained national attention when her daughter Ellen came out on national television. Her first book, "Love Ellen; A Mother Daughter Journey, "told the story of her own journey to acceptance, pride, and finally activism. As a spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign, Betty speaks extensively on behalf of greater tolerance for gay men and lesbians, and writes an advice column on issues of coming out on "PlanetOut."

Sundays on Fourth Street/Los Domingos En La Calle Cuatro

Product : Sundays on Fourth Street/Los Domingos En La Calle Cuatro
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : "My cousin Pepe combs my hair back just like his, and Aunt Pilar laughs. Then she slides her red lipstick across my lips, but Mama wipes it off because I'm too young. Mama puts on her new jeans, and Aunt Pilar polishes her high heels. Uncle Armando finishes washing his old car." And then, a young girl and her family pile into the shiny car, grown-ups in the front and kids in the back, and head to Fourth Street. Sundays spent on Fourth Street are magical, family outings that three young cousins eagerly anticipate. Strolling down Fourth Street with their parents, the children encounter a bustling wonderland filled with music, food, and fun. The cousins savor sharp bursts of flavor from mangos on a stick covered with lemon chili and salt; delight in the sight of folk dancers spinning in the plaza; revel in rides and raffles at the church carnival; and yearn for clothes and toys they see in shop windows. While the children may not get the things that so often catch their attention they can always look forward to more fun together next Sunday on Fourth Street. Based on real-life visits to Fourth Street in Santa Ana, California, author Amy Costales has written a story that pays homage to a special street and--more importantly--time spent with loved ones. Paired with Elaine Jerome's colorful illustrations that depict lively street scenes, readers of all ages will enjoy Sundays on Fourth Street.

John Gardner: Literary Outlaw

Product : John Gardner: Literary Outlaw
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : For a decade--from 1973 to 1982--John Gardner was one of America's most famous writers and certainly its most flamboyantly opinionated. His 1973 novel, The Sunlight Dialogues, was on the New York Times bestseller list for fourteen weeks. Once in the limelight, he picked public fights with his peers, John Barth, Joseph Heller, and Norman Mailer among them, and wrote five more bestsellers. Gardner's personal life was as chaotic as his writing life was prolific. At twenty, he married his cousin Joan, and after a long marriage that was both passionate and violent, left her for Liz Rosenberg, a student. Only a few years later, he left Rosenberg for another student, Susan Thornton. Famous for disregarding his own safety, he rode his motorcycle at crazy speeds, incurred countless concussions, and once broke both of his arms. He survived what was diagnosed as terminal colon cancer only to resume his prodigious drinking and to die in a motorcycle accident at age forty-nine, a week before his third wedding. Biographer Barry Silesky captures John Gardner's fabulously contradictory genius and his capacity to both dazzle and infuriate. He portrays Gardner as a man of unrestrained energy and blatant contempt for convention and also as a man whose charisma drew students and devoted followers wherever he went. Amazingly, Gardner published twenty-nine books in all, including eleven fiction titles, a book-length epic poem, six books of medieval criticism, and a major biography. Twenty-one years after his death, his On Moral Fiction and The Art Of Fiction are still read and debated in MFA programs across the country. This is a full-scale biography of a writer who was, for ten years, almost bigger than life. It lives up to its subject magnificently.

Description : Do women notice shoes? Should khakis have pleats? Is there any level of fitness that justifies wearing a tank top in public? What, exactly, is a "dickie, " and would it be a mistake to be caught dead with one? While there are many aspects of life about which men are confident, assured. even brilliant, unfortunately style is not always one of them. And when it comes to dressing and comporting oneself well, life is too short to feel unprepared -- laughably unprepared -- in the face of so many sartorial options. So remember: Wearing a suit does not make you a "suit." Casual Friday does not excuse the visibility of chest hair. And what should you do if someone calls you a "dandy"? Open closet. Remove contents. Begin again. Most guys might not admit it, but what they don't know about style could fill a book. This is the book.
