Product : Wild Shores of Patagonia: The Valdes Peninsula and Punta Tombo
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Patagonia, the vast remote region at the southernmost tip of South America, is one of the last truly wild places on this planet. The natural habitat of hundreds of wild species -- from killer whales and elephant seals to penguins and albatrosses -- it is one of the world's great showcases of wildlife. For two years, photojournalist Jasmine Rossi lived on the Valdes Peninsula, the center of this coastal life zone, along with a handful of wildlife biologists, and she photographed the animals interacting in ways never before documented. Rossi's astonishing images and spine-tingling first-person accounts of her adventures provide a unique window on the life-and-death struggles faced daily on Patagonia's rugged shores and ferocious seas.

Description : Ellen May Ngewthu is a soldier and leader of the Cassini Division, the elite defense force of the utopian Solar Union. Here in the twenty-fourth century, the forts of the Division, in orbit around Jupiter, are the front line in humanity's long standoff with the unknowable post-humans godlike beings descended from the men and women who transformed themselves with high technology centuries ago. The post-humans' capacities are unknown . . . but we know they disintegrated Ganymede, we know they punched a wormhole into Jovian space, and we know that the very surface of the solar system's largest planet has been altered by them. Worse, we know that they have been bombarding the inner solar system with powerful data viruses for generations. Now Ellen has a plan to rid humanity of this threat once and for all. But she needs to convince others to mistrust the post-humans as much as she does. In the process, much will be revealed--about history, about power, and about what it is to be human.

Where the Evidence Leads: An Autobiography

Product : Where the Evidence Leads: An Autobiography
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Set in any era, Dick Thornburgh's brilliant career would merit study and retelling. He was the first Republican elected to two successive terms as governor of Pennsylvania (1979-87). He served in the United States Department of Justice under five presidents, including three years as attorney general in the cabinets of Presidents Reagan and Bush (1988-91). As undersecretary-general of the United Nations (1993), he was the highest ranking American in the organization and a strong voice for reform. Thornburgh's twenty-five-year path through the highest levels of local, state, and national government has coincided with some of the most compelling events of the American century. In this book, he follows his well-known mantra to pursue the trail of evidence wherever it leads as he candidly presents both the public and private stories of a life fully engaged with public service to his country. Nationally, Thornburgh is best remembered for his three years as attorney general, when he managed some of the most vexing legal matters of the modern age: the Savings and Loan and BCCI scandals; controversy over the "Iraqgate" and INSLAW investigations and the Wichita abortion clinic protests; and prosecutions of Michael Milken, Manuel Noriega, and Marion Barry, as well as those involved in the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing, the Exxon Valdez oil spill, and the Rodney King beating. As governor of Pennsylvania, he faced the nation's worst nuclear accident, weeks after his inauguration in 1979. Thornburgh's cool-headed response to the Three Mile Island disaster is often studied as a textbook example of emergency management. He recounts his efforts to transform the state's ailing smokestack economy and thecontroversy over "Thornfare," an early welfare-to-work program. His historic 1992 battle against Harris Wofford for the late John Heinz Ill's senate seat is one of several political campaigns, vividly recalled, that reveal the inner workings of the commonwealth's political machinery. Thornburgh reveals painful details of his personal life, including the 1960 automobile accident that claimed the life of his first wife and permanently disabled his infant son. He presents a frank analysis of the challenges of raising a family as a public figure, and tells the moving story of his personal and political crusade that culminated in the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.

Medical Complications of Psychiatric Illness

Product : Medical Complications of Psychiatric Illness
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Psychiatric patients have an increased rate of morbidity and mortality due to physical illnesses. Distressingly, psychiatrists fail to recognize these comorbid medical illnesses in nearly half of all cases. All too often, the physical illness may be causing or exacerbating the psychiatric symptoms. Furthermore, the psychiatric condition itself and iatrogenic complications of medication or other treatments can result in serious medical pathology. Until now, most psychiatrists have deferred the general medical care of their patients to other practitioners. Yet because psychiatrists are uniquely positioned to provide health care that bridges somatic and mental conditions, they are increasingly being called on to ensure that their patients also receive adequate medical care. This breakthrough text responds to that call to action from a perspective unique in the literature: It focuses on the medical complications of psychiatric illnesses, rather than the more typical psychiatric complications of medical illnesses. This concise yet comprehensive book is intended for practitioners who treat adult medical patients. It is divided into two main sections: "Health Care of Psychiatric Patients," organized by recommendations for routine medical management and reproductive health, focuses on the general health care maintenance of psychiatric patients with medical illnesses. Also discussed are the unique reproductive health needs of psychiatric patients, who are often at increased risk of coercive or abusive sexual relationships, rape and other sexual assaults, unplanned pregnancy, pregnancy complications, and sexually transmitted diseases. "Psychiatric Disorders," organized by diagnostic groupings, focuses on those psychiatric disorders-affective, anxiety, and somatoform disorders and dementia; schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders; Munchausen's syndrome and other factitious disorders; self-injurious behavior; eating disorders; and alcohol and drug abuse-that most clearly can have medical complications. Using extensive notes and tables throughout, these distinguished contributors have created far more than just another compendium of medical illnesses that can present with psychiatric symptoms. Here you'll find a practical, detailed roadmap that will be welcomed not only by students, residents, and clinicians working with adult psychiatric patients who develop medical complications, but also by practitioners who manage psychiatric patients in a general medical practice.

Saving Those Damned Catholics

Product : Saving Those Damned Catholics
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Saving Those Damned Catholics chronicles the reasons why the current mess within the Catholic Church is not something that should surprise anyone, whether Catholic, Protestant, or just curious. After all, as the story unfolds you will learn how a bureaucracy has replaced individual commitment; and how politics has become far too appealing to the majority of Catholic bishops. It is no surprise that Americans scoff at Catholic teachings on birth control, abortion and euthanasia. The statistics tell the tale: most Catholics don't know what the Church teaches on these matters of life and death, and if they do, they choose to disagree and - ho-hum - the hierarchy moves on. Saving Those Damned Catholics outlines the logic behind the most controversial teachings in the Church today, and exposes the arguments put forth by priests and bishops who clearly do not agree with some of these teachings themselves. Astounding as it may seem, there are reasons why federal funding has become more important than protecting innocent life; why popularity among the most liberal of politicians has trumped Pope Benedict XVI's call to be good shepherds and, indeed, to be counter-cultural. There are reasons why homosexuals are still in the seminaries; and there are reasons why the vast majority of Catholics use birth control and condone abortion. Ever wonder why people like Bill O'Reilly, Ted Kennedy and others in public life get away with distorting Catholic teaching? Scoffing at the truth? Taking it upon themselves to "correct" the Pope on national television? This book will give you a bird's eye view into what is being said and what is not being done to set the record straight. As Judie Brownput this book together she was able to interview several Catholic priests, including two bishops. One of the most interesting comments she heard is that the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is not only a major part of the problem these days, but is an entity that should be deconstructed - abolished, as one priest put it. The bureaucracy has become synonymous with doing nothing to rock the proverbial political boat. But you'll just have to read the book to learn more. In summary, Saving Those Damned Catholics exposes the warts on the underbelly of the Catholic leadership in America today, and it is not a pretty picture. Too many among them are caught up in a twisted vision of what it takes to effectively lead Catholics. There is too much moral relativism and too little desire to say what is right, especially when doing so will bring down the wrath of the media and maybe even a few politicians. Regardless of your opinion about Catholics and their Church, don't miss the chance to read one woman's account of history - a history that continues to unfold before our eyes. ENDORSEMENTS] "Judie Brown's work fills a void screaming for attention - the persistent relentless assault on Catholic orthodoxy by dissidents attempting to reshape

Unlikely Muse: Legal Thinking and Artistic Imagination

Product : Unlikely Muse: Legal Thinking and Artistic Imagination
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : This trail-blazing book explores previously uncharted aspects of law and literature, as well as the psychology, paradoxes and wonderful mystery of creativity. A study of artistic inspiration, Unlikely Muse examines and analyzes the lives and works of three very different writers who combine law, literature and imagination: nineteenth-century French novelist Honor de Balzac, modernist American poet Wallace Stevens, and controversial playwright-memoirist Lillian Hellman. From the literary careers of those three writers emerge two intertwined and exciting new themes. The first theme demonstrates unexpected synergy between law and literature. Opening original lines of inquiry, Unlikely Muse probes the possible relationship between legal training and artistic creativity. A surprisingly large number of great creative artists - writers (such as Balzac), poets (such as Stevens), painters (such as Matisse) and composers (such as Tchaikovsky) - studied or practiced law. This book asks whether such people became great creative artists because of or despite their legal background. Others, such as Hellman, had no legal training but wrote much about the law. This book sketches the intellectual atmosphere and biographical background that shaped these three writers' creative process, highlighting the impact of the law on their work. The second theme uses these same three writers to focus on the changing role of imagination in literature. From Balzac through Stevens to Hellman and beyond, the author traces imagination's arc from a positive artistic quality to something that is sometimes more controversial, perhaps deceitful, and negative. In the last few decades - ever since Hellman's memoirs were attacked as untrue - journalists, memoirists and other writers have palmed off works of fiction as non-fiction, often causing literary scandals. This book offers a new theory why this phenomenon is happening and how it should be regarded.

Product : Casa Loma: Canada's Fairy-Tale Castle and Its Owner, Sir Henry Pellatt
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : This beautifully illustrated book tells the story of Casa Loma, Toronto's most famous historic site, and its owner, Sir Henry Pellatt. Born in 1859, Pellatt was a fascinating figure: a romantic whose interest in architecture inspired the medieval-style castle that is now a Toronto landmark. Casa Loma took 300 men three years to build at a cost of $3.5 million. Completed in 1914, the castle was enjoyed by Pellatt for only ten years before bankruptcy forced it from his hands. Today, Casa Loma is owned by the City of Toronto and operated by the Kiwanis Club. Novelist and historian Bill Freeman tells the story of Pellatt's life and takes readers on a tour that covers every significant room in this dramatic hillside castle. The text is illustrated with full-colour contemporary photographs as well as fascinating archival material.

Arafat: From Defender to Dictator

Product : Arafat: From Defender to Dictator
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In this meticulously researched and iconoclastic work, Said Aburish, the internationally respected Palestinian political analyst and writer, turns the popular western perception of Yasser Arafat upside-down. Far from being the benign heroic freedom fighter who has kept the hopes of his displaced people alive, Arafat is revealed as a narrow-minded operator, out of touch with reality, whose personal ambitions and lack of understanding of democratic principles have made him a deterrent to real peace in the Middle East. Aburish exposes the unsound foundations of Arafat's leadership, and shows that his PLO has never been a revolutionary movement; rather Arafat and the PLO have always represented an elite group of Palestinian families who have grown ever more rich. Moreover, Aburish has discovered from hitherto silent but impeccable sources that since 1963, when Arafat first established contact with the CIA in Beirut, the PLO has conducted a secret dialogue with the US, amounting to a betrayal of its people- in effect an agreement to avoid military or economic confrontation with Israel. Aburish goes on to demonstrate that, in his current role as President of the Palestinian Authority, Arafat has created one of the ugliest expressions of absolute dictatorship, even by Middle Eastern standards, in the world today. He concludes with a stimulating analysis of the likely future for Palestine and of the crucial world implications.

Description : Ellie McDougal (better known to her friends as Ellie Mc"Doodle" because she loves to draw) is a nearly-twelve-year-old prisoner . . . of her aunt, uncle, three annoying cousins, and her baby brother, Ben-Ben. Sentenced to a week-long camping trip with them while her parents are out of town, Ellie is absolutely, positively determined to hate every single minute of the experience. Thank goodness she at least has her sketch journal, in which she records all the excruciating (and okay, "very" funny) details. Mosquito bites and trips to the Fred Moose museum she can handle. But how will she keep her journal from falling into Er-ick the Enemy's hands? And what will happen when--gasp--she actually starts having fun? Part graphic novel, part confessional journal, part wilderness survival guide, Ellie's story is a treat for young campers, vacationers, or anyone looking for a great summer read.

Confessions of a Secular Jew: A Memoir

Product : Confessions of a Secular Jew: A Memoir
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : I was raised in full consciousness of being Jewish. I was sent to a Yiddish shule and I can read and speak Yiddish. But I am not a Yiddish speaking Jew: Yiddish is not part of my essence. I am not a believer. I do not celebrate the holidays, nor do I atone for my sins on Yom Kippur. And I have transmitted virtually nothing of Yiddishkeit to my children. This failure of mine became the subject of a quarrel with my father who told me I had in effect thrown away the gift of Yiddish he had given me. My children were no longer Jews. . . ". What it means to be a Jew lies at the very heart of A Matter of Identity, a memoir and an examination of the nature of Jewish identity in an increasingly secular world (and whether a secular Jewish culture really has a future in America); of the pain of a heritage lost-or in danger of disappearing-not only in the religious sense, but in the sense of the history, the culture, the humor much of which defines Jewishness and some of which defines Yiddishkeit. But what is "Jewishness" anyway? And what are the links that bind Karl Marx to Saul Bellow or Spinoza to Philip Roth; The Pale to Brooklyn. These ideas-and many others-lie at the very heart of A Matter of Identity, and Eugene Goodheart's wrestling match with the questions of faith and cultural identity is sure to gather in spectators-believers and doubters alike.

Walled

Product : Walled
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : An award-winning journalist explores the culture of denial in Israeli and Palestinian societies-and its lethal consequences. Walled examines the contemporary state of mind of Israel's citizens, tracing the history of the State of Israel back to the Jewish national movement and the beginnings of Zionism. Sylvain Cypel offers a lucid analysis of the Israeli-Palestinian situation and powerfully demonstrates that the wall of protection erected in the West Bank by Israel is the most visible symptom of a society in peril. Those who are walled, Cypel argues, are first and foremost the Israelis themselves, who have chosen to ignore rather than acknowledge the existence and rights of their neighbors. Through the study of political discourse, intellectual controversy, and national institutions such as the army and the educational system, Cypel illuminates the mechanics of the culture of force that has led Israeli society into its current impasse. Walled combines historical, cultural, and sociological analysis with personal testimonies and a delightful Jewish wit, offering a cogent and gripping portrait of two peoples walled by denial: Israeli society and its "other," the Palestinians.

The Prohibition Era: Temperance in the United States

Product : The Prohibition Era: Temperance in the United States
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : With the ratification of the Eighteenth Amendment to the Constitution in 1920, the United States became a "dry" nation. For the next 13 years, a period now known as Prohibition, the amendment forbade Americans from manufacturing, selling, or transporting alcoholic beverages until its repeal in 1933. In 1920, Prohibition's supporters had confidently looked forward to a bright new era of stronger families, lower crime rates, and increased industrial productivity. Yet, their great social experiment was to prove virtually impossible to enforce. Consequently, although per capita alcohol consumption among Americans declined between 1920 and 1933, tens of millions of citizens, including an unprecedented number of women, imbibed regularly throughout the Prohibition years, swilling gallons of "bootleg" liquor smuggled in from abroad or concocted in illegal stills.

Becoming Cape Cod Becoming Cape Cod Becoming Cape Cod Becoming Cape Cod Becoming Cape Co: Creating a Seaside Resort Creating a Sea

Product : Becoming Cape Cod Becoming Cape Cod Becoming Cape Cod Becoming Cape Cod Becoming Cape Co: Creating a Seaside Resort Creating a Sea
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Following in the footsteps of Dona Brown's pathbreaking work on New England tourism, James C. O'Connell has written the first comprehensive history of the tourist trade on Cape Cod. Lavishly illustrated from the author's personal collection of rare historical postcards, O'Connell traces the development of tourism as both an idea and a reality. Tourism came relatively late to the Cape, beginning with the establishment of resort communities in Hyannisport and Falmouth. The introduction of the automobile led to the arrival of an increasing number of middle-class tourists, which in turn spawned proliferation of motels, inexpensive hotels, cottage colonies, and campsites. To attract and entertain the new influx of tourists, the area became home to a dizzying array of restaurants, antique shops, golf courses, and historical landmarks. After World War II, a further boom ensued which still continues. Today the Cape is faced with the problems of a growing year-round population, crowds of summer vacationers, and all the associated issues of traffic, congestion, water degradation, and overdevelopment. L'Enfant's Legacy: Public Open Spaces in Washington, D.C.

Product : L'Enfant's Legacy: Public Open Spaces in Washington, D.C.
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Many American democratic ideals are embodied in the public spaces of its cities, especially in Washington, D.C. In L'Enfant's Legacy architect and scholar Michael Bednar explores the public spaces of the nation's capital, examining the context of the surrounding architecture and the roles of the spaces in the changing functional life of the city. Bednar examines the ways in which L'Enfant's innovative plan of 1791, along with later developments, symbolizes and encourages democratic freedoms and traditions. In the spaces of Capitol Square, citizens expect to encounter their government directly in a dignified setting, a symbolic public forum. On the White House grounds they expect to meet the president where he works and lives. At the National Mall -- America's front lawn -- citizens exercise their rights of assembly and free speech, as well as play football, eat lunch, and socialize. From historic Lincoln Square, Dupont Circle, and Judiciary Square to the newly developed Freedom Plaza, Pershing Park, and Market Square, Bednar's thoughtful study provides a fresh perspective on the role of public space in the expression of democratic ideals.

Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In the decades following the Civil War, the principal task facing the United States Army was that of subduing the hostile western Indians and removing them from the path of white settlement. Indian scouts and auxiliaries played a central role in the effort, participating in virtually every campaign. In this comprehensive account of the "wolves" (as scouts were designated in sign language), Thomas W. Body Work: Objects of Desire in Modern Narrative

Product : Body Work: Objects of Desire in Modern Narrative
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : The desire to know the body is a powerful dynamic of storytelling in all its forms. Peter Brooks argues that modern narrative is intent on uncovering the body in order to expose a truth that must be written in the flesh. In a book that ranges widely through literature and painting, Brooks shows how the imagination strives to bring the body into language and to write stories on the body. From Rousseau, Balzac, Mary Shelley, and Flaubert, to George Eliot, Zola, Henry James, and Marguerite Duras, from Manet and Gauguin to Mapplethorpe, writers and artists have returned in fascination to the body, the inescapable other of the spirit. Brooks's deep understanding of psychoanalysis informs his demonstration of how the "epistemophilic urge"--the desire to know-guides fictional plots and our reading of them. It is the sexual body that furnishes the building blocks of symbolization, eventually of language itself-which then takes us away from the body. Yet mind and language need to recover the body, as an other realm that is primary to their very definition. Brooks shows how and why the female body has become the field upon which the aspirations, anxieties, and contradictions of a whole society are played out. And he suggests how writers and artists have found in the woman's body the dynamic principle of their storytelling, its motor force. This major book entertains and teaches: Brooks presumes no special knowledge on the part of his readers. His account proceeds chronologically from Rousseau in the eighteenth century forward to contemporary artists and writers. Body Work gives us a set of analytical tools and ideas-primarily from psychoanalysis, narrative and film studies, andfeminist theory-that enable us to read modern narrative afresh.

Fighting for Social Justice: The Life of David Burgess

Product : Fighting for Social Justice: The Life of David Burgess
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : This unusual book, the world of obituaries looks at obituaries as a rich source of information on cultural representation of gender. It examines obituaries published from 1938 to 1998 in three cultures -- Egypt, Iran, and the United States -- to analysis how women and men are represented in their death notices and how these representations have change over time. It also shows how obituaries, viewed as texts, at times converge within but often diverge from expected norms. Mushira Eid has applied quantitative and qualitative analytical techniques to 4,400 obituaries, using names, titles, and occupations as linguistic symbols of identity. Data were collected for a month at ten-year intervals to measure change. From them, she demonstrates differences within the world of obituaries, relates this world to the world at large, and constructs a model based on this comparison. Resulting facts are placed within the context of women's movements in the three cultures and other sociocultural and political events that influenced the perception of gender roles. The World of Obituaries offers a unique synthesis of information on women and public space in three cultures. It opens a new window on gender-related differences in language, both cross-culturally and historically, and invites readers to view obituaries in a new light.

The Good Government Man: Albert Coates and the Early Years of the Institute of Government

Product : The Good Government Man: Albert Coates and the Early Years of the Institute of Government
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : "The Good Government Man" captures the life of Albert Coates (1896-1989), the founder and first director of the Institute of Government at the University of North Carolina, and an exciting, transformative era in the history of UNC. Inspired by visionary President Edward Kidder Graham--whose death during the influenza pandemic of 1918 devastated the campus--Coates adopted as his life mission his hero's dream of the university in service to the state. With raw determination, stubborn independence, and sheer audacity, Coates created the Institute of Government, now School of Government, to prepare elected officials, government employees, and private citizens for public service. Covington's clear-eyed account presents Coates in all his guises. Passionate and persuasive on the stump, he tirelessly recruited anyone who would listen to his cause including state and university leaders who would prove essential to the ultimate success of the Institute. To admirers, he was a genius of striking originality. Like many with a strong sense of mission, he could also be exasperatingly insistent on getting his way in all matters, great or small. His story, however, is unarguably an important one, and the value of the institute he founded, the first program of its type in the nation, is inestimable.

The Self in Process: Toward a Post-Rationalist Cognitive Therapy

Product : The Self in Process: Toward a Post-Rationalist Cognitive Therapy
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In this powerful work, Dr. Guidano critiques the separation of observer and observed, shows how the very meaning of "self" is thus redefined, and delineates the clinical ramifications of the newly conceived self for a "post-rationalist" cognitive therapy. Clinicians, according to Guidano, can do more than help patients change dysfunctional behavior. By directing therapy toward core emotional themes and utilizing the interactional aspects of the therapeutic relationship, practitioners can modify patients' core patterns of self-perception and thereby realize substantive and lasting change. Part I of the volume lays the theoretical groundwork and Part II, replete with case examples, discusses psychotherapeutic applications. In the first part, Guidano explicates his construct of the self, examining the differentiation of self-boundaries, discussing developmental pathways of self-organization, and describing the impact of self-boundaries on lifespan development. In Part II, he constructs his post-rationalist framework for cognitive therapy with discussions of the therapist's attitude, assessment procedures, self-observation method, and the structure and dynamics of therapeutic change. Case illustrations demonstrate how the practitioner, whom he views as "a strategically oriented perturber," can prepare the clinical and interpersonal context; focus and reorder immediate experiencing; and help the patient reconstruct his or her affective style.

Constructing Nationhood in Modern East Asia

Product : Constructing Nationhood in Modern East Asia
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : A cutting-edge collection exploring identity-making in East Asia This is an interdisciplinary study of the cultural politics of nationalism and national identities in modern East Asia. Combining theoretical insights with empirical research, it explores the cultural dimensions of nationhood and identity-making in China, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. The essays address issues ranging from the complex relations between popular culture and national consciousness to the representation of ethnic/racial identity and gendered discourse on nationalism. The cutting-edge research on the diverse forms of cultural preacceptance and the various ways in which this participates in the construction and projection of national and ethnic identities in East Asia illuminates several understudied issues in Asian studies, including the ambiguity of Hong Kong identity during World War II and the intricate politics of the post-war Taiwanese trial of collaboration. Addressing a wide range of theoretical and historical issues regarding cultural dimensions of nationalism and national identities all over East Asia, these essays draw insights from such recent theories as cultural studies, postcolonial theories, and archival-researched cultural anthropology. The book will be important reading for students of Asian studies as well as for serious readers interested in issues of nationalism and culture. Kai-wing Chow is Associate Professor of East Asian Languages and Cultures. Kevin Doak is Associate Professor of History. Poshek Fu is Associate Professor of History and Cinema Studies. Chaos and Harmony: Perspectives on Scientific Revolutions of the Twentieth Century

Product : Chaos and Harmony: Perspectives on Scientific Revolutions of the Twentieth Century
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : For 300 years, since the time of Isaac Newton, scientists saw reality as a giant clock -- a sterile mechanism in which one part acts on another in a deterministic fashion. But the discoveries of the last few decades have changed all that, conjuring up instead a universe brimming with unpredictability, creativity, and chance. Writing with exceptional grace and clarity, Trinh Xuan Thuan vividly describes these important scientific discoveries, intriguing new theories about chaos, gravity, strange attractors, fractals, symmetry, superstrings, and the strangeness of atoms. Equally important, he reveals how these discoveries have shaped our view of the universe -- for instance, how quantum mechanics brought indeterminism to the subatomic universe. Thuan deftly describes quantum mechanics, discusses its relationship to the theories of relativity (which deal with the universe on a massive scale), and comments on Einstein's inability to accept it. Indeed, throughout Chaos and Harmony, he makes clear as never before the mind-bending ideas of modern physics, such as the effect of gravity on time (it slows it down), the impossibility of crossing the speed-of-light barrier (it would actually reverse time), the role of fractals as "the language of nature", and the unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics in understanding the universe. From the subatomic world to the vast realm of quasars and galaxies, from the nature of mathematics to the fractal characteristics of the human circulatory system, Trinh Xuan Thuan takes us on a breathtaking tour of the universe. With striking examples and clear, plain language, he shows how science has actually restored mystery to the world around us -- a world ofsymmetry and chaos, contingency and creativity.

Dance with Desire

Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Don't let the title fool you; this is not a book of romantic bric-a-brac, a Valentine's Day gift to be lightly given and lightly forgotten. Irving Layton's career was based on an unflinching attention to everything he could discover about the human character, including its less savoury aspects. In the poems of "Dance with Desire" chosen from across the span of his long career, Layton styles himself as a 20th-century Catullus, loving and hating with equal glee, given to passionate excesses and epigrammatic precision, utterly unconcerned with sweet nothings or political correctness. Layton is often charged with being too verbose, with having published far too many substandard poems, and having let his verse grow slack as he grew older. These are all valid criticisms, but they don't really apply to "Dance with Desire" since its very existence depends upon the excesses, embarrassments, and foolishness of the unstifled love that Layton celebrates.'

Description : When pulled from the mud of creeks, ponds, rivers, or the sea, the eel, with its slick, snake-like body, emerges as an extremely mundane and even unappealing fish. But don't let the appearance fool you--the eel has been one of the world's favorite foods since ancient Greece, and the eel's life cycle is one of the most remarkable on the planet--during the middle ages, impoverished Londoners survived on eel and the eel later saved the Mayflower pilgrims from starvation on American shores. In "Eel," Richard" "Schweid chronicles the many facets of these slippery creatures from their natural history to their market value and contemporary consumption to their appearance in art and literature and finally to their present threatened status. So far, eels have steadfastly refused to reproduce in captivity, apparently requiring the vastness of the open ocean to successfully mature--which has imperiled the species' long-term survival. Schweid explains that freshwater eels are born in remote ocean depths and make a journey of thousands of miles to fresh water where they spend most of their lives before making a return journey to the ocean to mate and die. Well-illustrated and containing many little-known facts about this surprising fish, "Eel "will appeal to general readers of natural history and others wishing to discover something more about the common "unagi "on the sushi menu.

From the Crash to the Blitz 1929-1939: The New York Times Chronicle of American Life

Product : From the Crash to the Blitz 1929-1939: The New York Times Chronicle of American Life
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : In unforgettable words and images, Cabell Phillips takes the reader from the crash of the stock market to the crash of bombs in Poland. The journey was a monumental one for Americansaa time of bitterness and despair, of failure and hunger and want, but also of rebirth. The New Deal was part of a social revolution, a recreation of the American experiment. In popular culture, too, the decade beginning with 1929 saw a new flowering in music, in radio, and in the moviesanow equipped with sound tracks. In baseball, Americaas pastime, the decade saw the exit of the mighty Babe and the coming of the great DiMaggio and Ted Williams; the Brown Bomber, Joe Louis, dominated boxing. More ominously, overseas, dictators and militarists were on the march across Europe and Asia. Soon, Americans would be drawn into the whirlwind. Phillipsas goal has been ato tell you not only what happened but what it was like to be there.a His sources were the files of The New York Times and the leading periodicals of the day, histories, memoirs, diaries, and government reports. Together, text and photographs offer a total historical experience of a decade in the life of a nation shadowed by depression, heading toward war, vibrating with its own frenzied excitement.

Introduction to Accounting: An Integrated Approach

Product : Introduction to Accounting: An Integrated Approach
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : This textbook integrates financial and managerial accounting as opposed to keeping these areas separate, the approach followed by most books and curriculums. By "integration," we mean the authors focus on the business process and examine the activities from both an external, financial reporting perspective and an internal, management decision-making perspective. The text incorporates real world applications, including actual financial statements, to reinforce the relevance of topics to real business situations and promote student interest. The text also promotes active learning through Enhance Your Understanding "probing" questions placed sporadically throughout many chapters, Of Interest boxes that provide additional information relating to the chapter concepts, new Fast Fact boxes that provide additional information related to chapter concepts in a short, trivia-like manner, and end-of-chapter group exercises. There are three key distinctions to the Ainsworth/Deines approach. They are: 1.Integration--described in preceding paragraph. 2.Within the context of business processes, Ainsworth/Deines is organized by planning for activities, performing those activities (in other words, capturing them in the financial statements), and finally, evaluating those business activities. 3.An organization around the Statement of Cash Flows first focusing on Operating Activities (what is my business, my product, who are my customers?) and then Financing and Investing Activities (how do I fund my business, how do I expand, what are the financial risks, etc?).

Privatizing Russia

Product : Privatizing Russia
Catalog : Better World Books Product Catalog
Description : Honorable Mention in the category of Economics in the 1995 Professional/Scholarly Publishing Annual Awards Competition presented by the Association of American Publishers, Inc. "Privatizing Russia" offers an inside look at one of the most remarkable reforms in recent history. Having started on the back burner of Russian politics in the fall of 1991, mass privatization was completed on July 1, 1994, with two thirds of the Russian industry privately owned, a rapidly rising stock market, and 40 million Russians owning company shares. The authors, all key participants in the reform effort, describe the events and the ideas driving privatization. They argue that successful reformers must recognize privatization as a process of depoliticizing firms in the face of massive opposition: making the firm responsive to market rather than political influences. The authors first review the economic theory of property rights, identifying the political influence on firms as the fundamental failure of property rights under socialism. They detail the process of coalition building and compromise that ultmately shaped privatization. The main elements of the Russian program --corporatization, voucher use, and voucher auctions--are described, as is the responsiveness of privatized firms to outside investors. Finally, the market values of privatized assets are assessed for indications of how much progress the country has made toward reforming its economy. In many respects, privatization has been a great success. Market concepts of property ownership and corporate management are shaking up Russian firms at a breathtaking pace, creating powerful economic and political stimuli for continuation of market reforms. At the same time, the authors caution, the political landscape remains treacherous as old-line politicians reluctantly cede their property rights and authority over firms.
