The Genus Erythronium

Product : The Genus Erythronium
Category : Books>Science and Nature
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : The Erythronium is a seemingly delicate perennial with a decidedly wild touch. Its recurved petals are often described as “tooth-like” and at times seem to be caught in a dramatic dive toward the ground. Long appreciated for their bright reds and yellows, their easy cultivation, and even their use as a food, these woodland plants are finding growing popularity in North America. The Genus Erythronium is the first dedicated monograph on the plant and will be the authority for botanists, gardeners, growers, and breeders everywhere. The Genus Erythronium details all twenty-nine currently identified species, all based on the most current research, including brand-new information on morphology and DNA. Captivating botanical illustrations and photographs fill the book and an extensive key allows easy identification of each species. Chapters covering phytogeography, morphology, cultivation, and conservation, as well as guidance on rating plants, come together to make this an essential, comprehensive volume.

Colonialism As Civilising Mission: Cultural Ideology In British India

Product : Colonialism As Civilising Mission: Cultural Ideology In British India
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : Inherent in colonialism was the idea of self-legitimation, the most powerful tool of which was the colonizer''s claim to bring the fruits of progress and modernity to the subject people. In colonial logic, people who were different because they were inferior had to be made similar - and hence equal - by civilizing them. However, once this equality had been attained, the very basis for colonial rule would vanish. Colonialism as Civilizing Mission explores British colonial ideology at work in South Asia. Ranging from studies on sport and national education, to pulp fiction to infanticide, to psychiatric therapy and religion, these essays on the various forms, expressions and consequences of the British ?civilizing mission? in South Asia shed light on a topic that even today continues to be an important factor in South Asian politics.

Disraeli And The Art Of Victorian Politics

Product : Disraeli And The Art Of Victorian Politics
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : This book is a comprehensive review of the political career of Benjamin Disraeli, providing a thorough critical analysis of one of the most ambitious and controversial leaders in British history. 'Disraeli and the Art of Victorian Politics' explores the political journey of a man propelled by a tremendous self-belief and capacity for self-invention through the complex world of Victorian political life. Disraeli retains a powerful presence in contemporary political discourse; whether in terms of current debates concerning the direction and leadership within the Conservative party or in more general areas of social and political debate such as the nature of imperialism, the dangers posed by the centralization of government power, the scope for state intervention in the economy, the constitutional role of the monarch and the meaning of Judaism in British life. Dr Ian St John discusses Disraeli's Conservative ideology and its relationship to his identity and his practice as a politician. The author brings to life the often sharp historiographical debates surrounding Disraeli's career by reproducing within each chapter views from key historians - an effective way to introduce the student and general reader to the contested nature of historical understanding. This title will be a major addition to our understanding of both Disraeli and the dynamics of nineteenth-century politics.

Lloyd George At War, 1916-1918

Product : Lloyd George At War, 1916-1918
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : 'Lloyd George at War, 1916-1918' provides a much needed re-evaluation of this charismatic prime minister's wartime leadership. Calling on a wide range of primary sources and focussing on Lloyd George's role in the war cabinet, Cassar compellingly argues that George's reputation as the man who won the war was wholly unmerited. Instead Cassar shows that Lloyd George's heavy handed leadership was often detrimental to the Allied cause. From his wholehearted support for the disastrous Nivelle offensive, to his pursuit of a peripheral strategy that diverted troops away from the critical theatre of war on the Western Front, Cassar shows that Lloyd George consistently bucked the advice of his generals in preference for ineffectual and dangerous military strategies. Cassar's approach also differs from that of other studies of Lloyd George by adopting a thematic approach in preference to a chronological narrative, thereby allowing a closer evaluation of Lloyd George's handling of complex issues.

Can We Live Forever?: A Sociological And Moral Inquiry

Product : Can We Live Forever?: A Sociological And Moral Inquiry
Category : Books
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : 'Can We Live Forever?' addresses the modern debate about the Life Extension Project that results from revolutions (actual and predicted) in bio-medicine, transplantation, cosmetic surgery, genetic counseling, stem cell research, cryonics, cloning and so forth that cumulatively promise to deliver eternal life or at least 'prolongevity'. In an engaging and thought-provoking work, the author traces the rise of the Life Extension Project and its claims against an intellectual background of recent analyses of 'waste', sustainable environments and complexity theory. Although there has been much discussion of increasing life expectancy, this book looks at a range of additional issues: the religious implications of life extension; the psychological consequences, such as ennui; the negative global social and economic factors; the problems of intergenerational justice. The possible benefits and adverse consequences of living forever are fully explored in this illuminating text, offering substance to social scientists working on ageing and demographic change, philosophers interested in questions of continuity and identity, theologians concerned with secular changes in the life course, as well as the general reader.

The Voice Of The People: Writing the European Folk Revival, 1760 1914

Product : The Voice Of The People: Writing the European Folk Revival, 1760 1914
Category : Books>Fiction and Literature
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : 'The Voice of the People' presents a series of essays on literary aspects of the European folk revival through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Its approach is both topical and generic, addressing not just the question of what purposes the folk revival served but also its many forms and genres. It focuses on two practices of antiquarianism, namely the key role that collecting and editing played in the formation of ethnological study in the European academy, and the business of publishing and editing that produced many 'folkloric' texts of dubious authenticity. Collecting and editing went hand-in-hand with plagiarism and forgery in the practice of many: much English, Scottish and Irish folk-song is of late-eighteenth century literary origin. Across Europe, too, national literary identities were often based on origins supposedly discovered in the people, but which were frequently the stuff of fiction. As was the case with Russian and Czech folklore, an interest in the folkloric was often successfully hybridised, with, for example, a continuing emphasis on classical patterns instructing the creation of vernacular art forms. In Germany, debate about the folk served the purposes of a radical writing in a time of successive political upheavals. In addition to exploring these tendencies, 'The Voice of the People' also presents readings of various genres: epic, song, tale and novel. It contributes to the study of several crucial European literary figures, from Macpherson and Percy, Herder and Burns, to Heine, Pushkin, Moore and Morris. But most of all it concerns the great anonymous authors of the European folk tradition - in narrative and lyric art - and their relation to the cultural movements and imagined identities of the peoples of the emerging nineteenth-century European nation. 'The Voice of the People' offers an original take on folklore revivals through its attempt to integrate British examples of the literary and antiquarian uses of folk art with a strong account of comparable movements in Europe.

Culture and Politics at the Court of Charles II, 1660-1685

Product : Culture and Politics at the Court of Charles II, 1660-1685
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : The reconstitution of the royal court in 1660 brought with it the restoration of fears that had been associated with earlier Stuart courts: disorder, sexual liberty, popery and arbitrary government. This book - the first full examination of its subject - illustrates the ways in which court culture was informed by the heady politics of Britain between 1660 and 1685. In political theory and practice the decades that preceded and included Charles II''s reign witnessed profound interrogation of British kingship. Individuals at the heart of royal government - court preachers, poets, playwrights, courtesans, diplomats, and politicians - were assertive participants in this scrutiny. This book looks beyond the prurient interest in the sexual antics of Restoration courtiers that has characterised previous works. It engages in a genuine and sophisticated attempt to show how the complex dynamics of Charles II''s court culture ran beneath the surface of show and ceremony. Ultimately it shows that the attempts to stabilise and strengthen the Stuart monarchy after the Restoration of Charles II were undercut by the cultural materials emanating from the royal court itself.MATTHEW JENKINSON completed his PhD at Merton College, Oxford.

The True Chronicles of Jean Le Bel, 1290 - 1360

Product : The True Chronicles of Jean Le Bel, 1290 - 1360
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : The chronicles of Jean le Bel, written around 1357-60, are one of the most important sources for the beginning of the Hundred Years'' War. They were only rediscovered and published at the beginning of the twentieth century, though Froissart begins his much more famous work by acknowledging his great debt to the ''true chronicles'' which Jean le Bel had written. Many of the great pages of Froissart are actually the work of Jean le Bel, and this is the first translation of his book. It introduces English-speaking readers to a vivid text written by a man who, although a canon of the cathedral at Liège, had actually fought with Edward III in Scotland, and who was a great admirer of the English king. He writes directly and clearly, with an admirable grasp of narrative; and he writes very much from the point of view of the knights who fought with Edward. Even as a canon, he lived in princely style, with a retinue of two knights and forty squires, and he wrote at the request of John of Hainault, the uncle of queen Philippa. He was thus able to draw directly on the verbal accounts of the Crécy campaign given to him by soldiers from Hainault who had fought on both sides; and his description of warfare in Scotland is the most realistic account of what it was like to be on campaign that survives from this period. If he succumbs occasionally to a good story from one of the participants in the wars, this helps us to understand the way in which the knights saw themselves; but his underlying objective is to keep ''as close to the truth as I could, according to what I personally have seen and remembered, and also what I have heard from those who were there.'' Edward may be his hero, a ''gallant and noble king'', but Le Bel tells the notorious story of his supposed rape of the countess of Salisbury because he believed it to be true, puzzled and shocked though he was by his material. It is a text which helps to put the massive work of Jean Froissart in perspective, but its concentrated focus and relatively short time span makes it a much more approachable and highly readable insight into the period.

Product : Telling the Story in the Middle Ages: Essays in Honor of Evelyn Birge Vitz
Category : Books>Fiction and Literature
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : The storyteller stands at the crossroads of orality and performance, surrounded by a circle of rapt listeners. Evelyn Birge Vitz has challenged a generation of scholars to join the circle, listen as they read, and exchange pen for performance. A tribute to her work, the fifteen essays in this volume attend to the qualities of voice, their registers and dynamics, whether practiced or impromptu, falsified, overlapping, interrupted or whispered. They examine how the book became a performance venue and reshaped the storyteller''s image and authority, and they investigate the mutability of stories that move from book to book, place to place and among competing cultures to stimulate cultural and political change. They show storytelling as far more than entertainment, but central to law, religious ritual and teaching, as well as the primary mode of delivering news. Themes that crisscross the volume include tensions among amateurs and professionals, dominant and minority languages and cultures, women and children''s engagement with storytelling, animality, religion, translation, travel, didacticism and entertainment. Kathryn A. Policing: Key Readings

Product : Policing: Key Readings
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : Policing has developed as an increasingly important and popular subject of study at colleges and universities in western societies, either as a subject in its own right or as part of broader courses in the field of criminology and criminal justice. This book aims to bring together the key readings which constitute the core of policing studies, setting them within the necessary theoretical, social and political context, and providing an explanatory commentary. The book is divided into five major sections: ? the history of policing: focusing on the emergence of the police in the USA and the UK, but including several readings on other policing systems; ? the role of the police: in particular the balance of tension between crime fighting, order maintenance and other forms of service, and how these arguments have developed historically; ? organisation and culture: how these are theorised and understood, considering arguments about the need for reform; ? approaches to policing: from crackdowns and the ?broken windows? theory, through zero tolerance to community policing; ? policing futures: debates about the future shape of policing, including work on risk, actuarialism and post-Keynesianism, and the debate on how current trends are to be understood.

Juvenile Justice Reform And Restorative Justice

Product : Juvenile Justice Reform And Restorative Justice
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : This book, based on a large-scale research project funded by the National Institute of Justice and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, provides an overview of the restorative justice conferencing programs currently in operation in the United States, paying particular attention to the qualitative dimensions of this, based on interviews, focus groups and ethnographic observation. It provides an unrivalled view of restorative justice conferencing in practice, and what the people involved felt and thought about it. The book looks at four structural variations in the face-to-face form of restorative decision making: family group conferences, victim-offender mediation/dialogue, neighborhood accountability boards, peacemaking circles. The authors address two issues that have received limited research emphasis in restorative justice: the lack of clear and consistent standards, and the absence of testable theories of intervention that reflect what has become a rather diverse practice. In response the authors conclude with a proposed structure for principle-based evaluation designed to test emerging theories of restorative decision making.

That's How It Was...Wasn't It?

Product : That's How It Was...Wasn't It?
Category : Books>Biography and Memoir
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : The hero of this saga served as a signalman in the Navy from 1941 (Boys'' Service) to 1948, seeing action all over the world. His introduction at sixteen to naval traditions was brief but impactful: twelve lashes of the birch, with a break after the first six, and spread betting on the side.Embittered and resentful? Not a bit. ''Taffy'' shows the same sense of humour, of duty and respect for all ranks and races (and most of the enemy) in seven years and 100,000 miles of seafaring. He watches the Scharnhorst go down, the D-Day landings, and the dawn ''come up like thunder out of China ''cross the bay''. Here is one man''s war, and it is both intensely funny and very moving. It is pacy, full of incident, and full of characters who kept the ''G'' word in front of Britain. They shall not be forgotten.

Description : Produced from a series of interviews with the journalist Christine Day, Good Vibrations is a fascinating account of the spiritual world and its relation to our own, and of one woman''s determination to clear people and places of bad, and sometimes evil, energies. Maureen Williams recognised her intuitive abilities at a young age, and many years later delighted in her talent for dowsing. This ultimately led to the discovery that, using the pendulum as a tool, she could channel a powerful positive vibration which cleared these spirits, or energies, from people and their homes, no matter how distant. This story outlines Maureen''s development, and recounts many of the fascinating situations she has totally transformed with her gift of vibrational healing.

The Alien Exponent

Category : Books
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : Was Jesus Christ really the Son of God, a holy Prophet? What is the truth about his life on earth? What were the exact circumstances of his death? In this impressive thesis, the author provides his answers to these questions, using some compelling and astounding evidence in his support. This evidence comes from his careful and most thorough investigation of Christ''s teachings in the scriptures. And the conclusion he reaches is. that Christ was an advanced extraterrestrial, the supreme leader of an intergalactic master race, who came to our planet to instruct us on how to create the perfect life. This was why Christ attempted to have himself accepted as the Hebrew Messiah so man would more readily receive his message. Thus Jesus Christ is the ''alien exponent''! Whatever your religious or secular preferences, this work cannot fail to challenge your view of human life, God and the universe, for ever.

Woman's Role In Economic Development

Product : Woman's Role In Economic Development
Category : Books>Business and Finance>Economics
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : ''Boserup''s contribution to our thinking on women?s role in development cannot be underestimated. Her keen observations, her use of empirical data and her commitment to greater gender equality are still an inspiration to students, researchers and activists who are interested in a better and more equal world.'' From the new Introduction by Nazneen Kanji, Su Fei Tan and Camilla Toulmin ''Women?s Role in Economic Development has become a key reference book for anyone - student, scholar, or practitioner - interested in gender and development analyses. This book is important not only because it provided the intellectual underpinning of the Women in Development (WID) analysis, but also because of the lasting influence it had on the development of theoretical, conceptual, and policy thinking in the fields of women, gender, and development. The re-editing of Women?s Role in Economic Development, with its new introduction, ensures students, academics, and practitioners continued access to an essential reference for those interested in the women and development literature.'' Gender and Development This classic text by Ester Boserup was the first investigation ever undertaken into what happens to women in the process of economic and social growth throughout the developing world, thereby serving as an international benchmark. In the context of the ongoing struggle for women?s rights, massive urbanization and international efforts to reduce poverty, this book continues to be a vital text for economists, sociologists, development workers, activists and all those who take an active interest in women''s social and economic circumstances and problems throughout the world. A substantial new Introduction by Nazneen Kanji, Su Fei Tan and Camilla Toulmin reflects on Boserup?s legacy as a scholar and activist, and the continuing relevance of her work. This highlights the key issue of how the role of women in economic development has or has not changed over the past four decades in developing countries, and covers crucial current topics including: women and inequality, international and national migration, conflict, HIV and AIDS, markets and employment, urbanization, leadership, property rights, global processes, including the Millennium Development Goals, and barriers to change.

Crop Genetic Resources as a Global Commons: Challenges In International Law And Governance

Product : Crop Genetic Resources as a Global Commons: Challenges In International Law And Governance
Category : Books
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : Farmers have engaged in collective systems of conservation and innovation ? improving crops and sharing their reproductive materials ? since the earliest plant domestications. Relatively open flows of plant germplasm attended the early spread of agriculture; they continued in the wake of (and were driven by) imperialism, colonization, emigration, trade, development assistance and climate change. As crops have moved around the world, and agricultural innovation and production systems have expanded, so too has the scope and coverage of pools of shared plant genetic resources that support those systems. The range of actors involved in their conservation and use has also increased dramatically. This book addresses how the collective pooling and management of shared plant genetic resources for food and agriculture can be supported through laws regulating access to genetic resources and the sharing of benefits arising from their use. Since the most important recent development in the field has been the creation of the multilateral system of access and benefit-sharing under the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, many of the chapters in this book will focus on the architecture and functioning of that system. The book analyzes tensions that are threatening to undermine the potential of access and benefit-sharing laws to support the collective pooling of plant genetic resources, and identifies opportunities to address those tensions in ways that could increase the scope, utility and sustainability of the global crop commons.

Description : Nancy Durrell was a woman famous for her silences. AnaÃ-s Nin said ''I think often of Nancy''s most eloquent silences, Nancy talking with her fingers, her hair, her cheeks, a wonderful gift. Music again.'' As the first wife Lawrence Durrell, author of The Alexandria Quartet, it is perhaps surprising that she is an unknown entity, a constant presence in the biographies of Durrell and others in the Bloomsbury set, yet always a shadowy figure, beautiful and enigmatic. But who was the woman who was with Durrell during the most important years of his development as a writer? Joanna Hodgkin decides to retrace her mother''s fascinating story: the escape from her toxic and mysterious family; the years in bohemian literary London and Paris in the 1930s; marriage to Durrell and their discovery of the ''Eden'' of pre-war Corfu and her desperate struggle to survive in Palestine alone with a small child as the British Mandate collapsed. Amateurs in Eden is a fascinating biography of a literary marriage and of an unusual woman struggling to live an independent life.

Presocratics

Product : Presocratics
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : The earliest phase of philosophy in Europe saw the beginnings of cosmology and rational theology, metaphysics, epistemology, and ethical and political theory. It saw the development of a wide range of radical and challenging ideas: from Thales'' claim that magnets have souls and Parmenides'' account that there is only one unchanging existent to the development of an atomist theory of the physical world. This general account of the Presocratics introduces the major Greek philosophical thinkers from the sixth to the middle of the fifth century BC. It explores how we might go about reconstructing their views and understanding the motivation and context for their work as well as highlighting the ongoing philosophical interest of their often surprising claims. Separate chapters are devoted to each of the major Presocratic thinkers, including Xenophanes, Heraclitus, Parmenides, Anaxagoras, Empedocles, Leucippus and Democritus, and an introductory chapter sets the scene by describing their intellectual world and the tradition through which their philosophy has been transmitted and interpreted. With a useful chronology and guide to further reading, the book is an ideal introduction for the student and general reader.

Cosmopolitanism: A Philosophy For Global Ethics

Product : Cosmopolitanism: A Philosophy For Global Ethics
Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : Cosmopolitanism is a demanding and contentious moral position. It urges us to embrace the whole world into our moral concerns and to apply the standards of impartiality and equity across boundaries of nationality, race, religion or gender in a way that would have been unheard of even fifty years ago. It suggests a range of virtues which the cosmopolitan individual should display: virtues such as tolerance, justice, pity, righteous indignation at injustice, generosity toward the poor and starving, care for the global environment, and the willingness to take responsibility for change on a global scale. This book explains and espouses the values of cosmopolitanism, adjudicates between various forms of cosmopolitanism, and defends it against its critics.Cosmopolitanism has relevance for international distributive justice; peace; human rights; environmental sustainability; protection for minorities, refugees and other oppressed groups; democratic participation; and inter cultural tolerance. The book does not aim to impart factual information about global issues or to offer prescriptions for the solution of global problems. Rather, it highlights the ethical issues inherent in them and identifies the moral obligations that individuals, multinational corporations and governments might have in relation to them. While espousing a cosmopolitan form of global ethics, a liberal form of politics, sustainable and just forms of business practice, and an internationalist approach to global conflict and governance, it seeks to present as many sides of the ethical debates as can be supported by reasonable argument. Discussing the work of Kwame Anthony Appiah, Seyla Benhabib, Martha Nussbaum, Thomas Pogge, John Rawls, Amartya Sen, Henry Shue, Peter Singer and others, this book provides a clear and accessible survey of cosmopolitanism and analyses the reality of the rights and responsibilities that it espouses.

Understanding Feminism

Product : Understanding Feminism
Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : Understanding Feminism provides an accessible guide to one of the most important and contested movements in progressive modern thought. Presenting feminism as a dynamic, multi-faceted and adaptive movement that has evolved in response to the changing practical and theoretical problems faced by women, the authors take a problem-oriented approach that maps the complex strands of feminist thinking in relation to women''s struggles for equal recognition and rights, and freedom from oppressive constraints of sex, self-expression and autonomy. Each chapter focuses on a different cluster of concerns, demonstrating key moves in second-wave feminist thought, as well as some of the diversity in response-strategies that encompass both socio-economic and cultural-symbolic concerns. This approach not only shows how central feminist insights, theories and strategies emerge and re-emerge across different contexts, but makes clear that far from being ''over'', feminism remains a vital response to the diverse issues that women (and men) find pressing and socially important.

Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : The Cyrenaic school of philosophy (named after its founder Aristippus'' native city of Cyrene in North Africa) flourished in the fifth and fourth centuries BCE and whose importance was much recognized in ancient times. Ugo Zilioli''s book provides the first book-length introduction to the school in English. This book begins by introducing the main figures of the Cyrenaic school beginning with Aristippus and by setting them into their historical context. Once the reader is familiar with those figures and with the genealogy of the school, the book offers an overview of ancient and modern interpretations of the Cyrenaics, to provide readers with alternative accounts of the doctrines they endorsed and of the role they played in the context of ancient thought. Finally, this book offers a reconstruction of Cyrenaic philosophy and shows how the ethical side of their speculation connected with the epistemology and ontology they endorsed and that, as a result, the Cyrenaics were able to offer a quite sophisticated philosophy. Indeed, Zilioli demonstrates that they represented, in ancient philosophy, an important and original metaphysical position and alternative to the kind of realism endorsed by Plato and Aristotle.

Understanding Nietzscheanism

Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : Nietzsche''s critiques of traditional modes of thinking, valuing and living, as well as his radical proposals for new alternatives, have been vastly influential in a wide variety of areas, such that an understanding of his philosophy and its influence is important for grasping many aspects of contemporary thought and culture. However Nietzsche''s thought is complex and elusive, and has been interpreted in many ways. Moreover, he has influenced starkly contrasting movements and schools of thought, from atheism to theology, from existentialism to poststructuralism, and from Nazism to feminism. This book charts Nietzsche''s influence, both historically and thematically, across a variety of these contrasting disciplines and schools of interpretation. It provides both an accessible introduction to Nietzsche''s thought and its impact and an overview of contemporary approaches to Nietzsche.

Description : Metaphysics and science have a long but troubled relationship. In this book, Markus Schrenk examines and explains the central questions and problems in the metaphysics of science. He reviews the development of the field from the early modern period through to the latest research, systematically assessing key topics including: dispositions counterfactual conditionals laws of nature causation properties natural kinds essence necessity. With the addition of chapter summaries and annotated further reading, Metaphysics of Science is a much-needed, clear and informative survey of this exciting area of philosophical research. Food, Sex and Strangers: Understanding Religion as Everyday Life

Product : Food, Sex and Strangers: Understanding Religion as Everyday Life
Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : Religion is more than a matter of worshipping a deity or spirit. For many people, religion pervades every part of their lives and is not separated off into some purely private and personal realm. Religion is integral to many people''s relationship with the wider world, an aspect of their dwelling among other beings - both human and other-than-human - and something manifested in the everyday world of eating food, having sex and fearing strangers. Food, Sex and Strangers offers alternative ways of thinking about what religion involves and how we might better understand it. Drawing on studies of contemporary religions, especially among indigenous peoples, the book argues that religion serves to maintain and enhance human relationships in and with the larger-than-human world. Fundamentally, religion can be better understood through the ways we negotiate our lives than in affirmations of belief - and it is best seen when people engage in intimate acts with themselves and others.

G. W. F. Hegel: Key Concepts

Product : G. W. F. Hegel: Key Concepts
Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : The thought of G. W. F. Hegel (1770 -1831) has had a deep and lasting influence on a wide range of philosophical, political, religious, aesthetic, cultural and scientific movements. But, despite the far-reaching importance of Hegel''s thought, there is often a great deal of confusion about what he actually said or believed. G. W. F. Hegel: Key Concepts provides an accessible introduction to both Hegel''s thought and Hegel-inspired philosophy in general, demonstrating how his concepts were understood, adopted and critically transformed by later thinkers. The first section of the book covers the principal philosophical themes in Hegel''s system: epistemology, metaphysics, philosophy of mind, ethical theory, political philosophy, philosophy of nature, philosophy of art, philosophy of religion, philosophy of history and theory of the history of philosophy. The second section covers the main post-Hegelian movements in philosophy: Marxism, existentialism, pragmatism, analytic philosophy, hermeneutics and French poststructuralism. The breadth and depth of G. W. F. Hegel: Key Concepts makes it an invaluable introduction for philosophical beginners and a useful reference source for more advanced scholars and researchers.

Description : In this provocative history, Mike Davis traces the car bomb’s worldwide use and development, in the process exposing the role of state intelligence agencies—particularly those of the United States, Israel, India, and Pakistan—in globalizing urban terrorist techniques. Davis argues that it is the incessant impact of car bombs, rather than the more apocalyptic threats of nuclear or bio-terrorism, that is changing cities and urban lifestyles, as privileged centers of power increasingly surround themselves with ‘rings of steel’ against a weapon that nevertheless seems impossible to defeat.

The Necessity Of Art

Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : “Art is necessary in order that man should be able to recognize and change the world. But art is also necessary by virtue of the magic inherent in it.”—Ernst FischerReissued with an introduction by John Berger, The Necessity of Art is a beautifully written meditation on art’s importance in viewing the world in which we live. In this wide-ranging and erudite exploration of literary and fine art, Fischer looks at the relationship between the creative imagination and social reality, arguing that truthful art must both reflect existence in all its flaws and imperfections, and help show how change and improvement might be brought about. With his emphasis on the individual’s need to engage with society, his rejection of rampant consumerism and hypertechnology, and his indomitable optimism, this radical, affirmative and humane vision of the artistic endeavor remains as timely today as when it was first published sixty years ago.

Artificial Hells: Participatory Art and the Politics of Spectatorship

Product : Artificial Hells: Participatory Art and the Politics of Spectatorship
Category : Books
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : Since the 1990s, critics and curators have broadly accepted the notion that participatory art is the ultimate political art: that by encouraging an audience to take part an artist can promote new emancipatory social relations. Around the world, the champions of this form of expression are numerous, ranging from art historians such as Grant Kester, curators such as Nicolas Bourriaud and Nato Thompson, to performance theorists such as Shannon Jackson. Artificial Hells is the first historical and theoretical overview of socially engaged participatory art, known in the US as “social practice.” Claire Bishop follows the trajectory of twentieth-century art and examines key moments in the development of a participatory aesthetic. This itinerary takes in Futurism and Dada; the Situationist International; Happenings in Eastern Europe, Argentina and Paris; the 1970s Community Arts Movement; and the Artists Placement Group. It concludes with a discussion of long-term educational projects by contemporary artists such as Thomas Hirschhorn, Tania Bruguera, Pawe? Althamer and Paul Chan.Since her controversial essay in Artforum in 2006, Claire Bishop has been one of the few to challenge the political and aesthetic ambitions of participatory art. In Artificial Hells, she not only scrutinizes the emancipatory claims made for these projects, but also provides an alternative to the ethical (rather than artistic) criteria invited by such artworks. Artificial Hells calls for a less prescriptive approach to art and politics, and for more compelling, troubling and bolder forms of participatory art and criticism.

Wittgenstein's Antiphilosophy

Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : Alain Badiou takes on the standard bearer of the “linguistic turn” in modern philosophy, and anatomizes the “anti-philosophy” of Ludwig Wittgenstein, in his Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus. Addressing the crucial moment where Wittgenstein argues that much has to be passed over in silence—showing what cannot be said, after accepting the limits of language and meaning—Badiou argues that this mystical act reduces logic to rhetoric, truth to an effect of language games, and philosophy to a series of esoteric aphorisms. in the course of his interrogation of Wittgenstein’s anti-philosophy, Badiou sets out and refines his own definitions of the universal truths that condition philosophy. Bruno Bosteels’ introduction shows that this encounter with Wittgenstein is central to Badiou’s overall project—and that a continuing dialogue with the exemplar of anti-philosophy is crucial for contemporary philosophy.

Description : This collection covers a wide range of topics, from a moving study of Bizet’s Carmen to an entertainingly caustic exploration of the hierarchies of the auditorium. Especially significant is Adorno’s “dialectical portrait” of Stravinsky, in which Adorno both reconsiders and refines his damning indictment of the composer in Philosophy on Modern Music. Throughout, Adorno is sustained by the conviction that music is supremely human because it is capable of communicating inhumanity while resisting it. His belief in the benevolent and transformative power of music reverberates throughout these writings.

The Adventure Of French Philosophy

Product : The Adventure Of French Philosophy
Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : The Adventure of French Philosophy is essential reading for anyone interested in what Badiou calls the “French moment” in contemporary thought.Badiou explores the exceptionally rich and varied world of French philosophy in a number of groundbreaking essays, published here for the first time in English or in a revised translation. Included are the often-quoted review of Louis Althusser’s canonical works For Marx and Reading Capital and the scathing critique of “potato fascism” in Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s A Thousand Plateaus. There are also talks on Michel Foucault and Jean-Luc Nancy, and reviews of the work of Jean-François Lyotard and Barbara Cassin, notable points of interest on an expansive tour of modern French thought.Guided by a small set of fundamental questions concerning the nature of being, the event, the subject, and truth, Badiou pushes to an extreme the polemical force of his thinking. Against the formless continuum of life, he posits the need for radical discontinuity; against the false modesty of finitude, he pleads for the mathematical infinity of everyday situations; against the various returns to Kant, he argues for the persistence of the Hegelian dialectic; and against the lure of ultraleftism, his texts from the 1970s vindicate the role of Maoism as a driving force behind the communist Idea.

The Doctor's Wife Is Dead: A Peculiar Marriage, A Suspicious Death, And A Murder Trial In Nineteenth-century Ireland

Product : The Doctor's Wife Is Dead: A Peculiar Marriage, A Suspicious Death, And A Murder Trial In Nineteenth-century Ireland
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : A mysterious death in respectable society: a brilliant historical true crime story In 1849, a woman called Ellen Langley died in Nenagh, Co. Tipperary. She was the wife of a prosperous local doctor. So why was she buried in a pauper''s coffin? Why had she been confined to the grim attic of the house she shared with her husband, and then exiled to a rented dwelling-room in an impoverished part of the famine-ravaged town? And why was her husband charged with murder? Following every twist and turn of the inquest into Ellen Langley''s death and the trial of her husband, The Doctor''s Wife is Dead tells the story of an unhappy marriage, of a man''s confidence that he could get away with abusing his wife, and of the brave efforts of a number of ordinary citizens to hold him to account. Andrew Tierney has produced a tour de force of narrative nonfiction that shines a light on the double standards of Victorian law and morality and illuminates the weave of money, sex, ambition and respectability that defined the possibilities and limitations of married life. It is a gripping portrait of a marriage, a society and a shocking legal drama. ''An astonishing book ... a vivid chronicle of the unspeakable cruelty perpetrated by a husband on his spouse at a time when, in law, a wife was a man''s chattel'' Damian Corless, Irish Independent ''Opens in gripping style and rarely falters ... fascinating and well researched'' Mary Carr, Irish Mail on Sunday (5 stars) ''Truly illuminating ... Tierney''s exploration of the case''s influence on Irish and English lawmaking and literature is particularly intriguing, drawing comparisons with Kate Summerscale''s similar work in The Suspicions of Mr Whicher'' Jessica Traynor, Sunday Times ''Riveting ... meticulously researched and deftly told'' Irish Examiner ''A nonfiction work with the pulse of a courtroom drama ... Tierney''s book is a moving account of Ellen Langley''s squalid last days, but it''s also a study of Famine-era Irish society. Men dominate, be they grimly professional gents in tall hats and grey waistcoats or feckless scoundrels using women as chattel'' Peter Murphy, Irish Times ''A dark tale of spousal abuse, illicit sex and uncertain justice, set against a backdrop of poverty and privilege, marital inequality and the deep religious divide between Catholics and Protestants. Tierney is an archaeologist, and his skill in unearthing the past is on display as he digs deep into the historical record of a murder case so shocking and controversial that it was debated in parliament. ... Tierney writes with passion ... and deftly weaves a plot that''s filled with surprising twists and turns'' History Ireland

The Changing Face Of Terrorism: How Real Is The Threat From Biological, Chemical And Nuclear Weapons?

Product : The Changing Face Of Terrorism: How Real Is The Threat From Biological, Chemical And Nuclear Weapons?
Category : Books
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN), terrorism and the war on terror are major features of international relations and global concern. Terrorist threats and actual violence have become increasingly dangerous and lethal since the 1970s. However, the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on 11 September 2001 heralded a new era in terrorist action and were the culmination of a terror campaign against American targets world-wide.  The Changing Face of Terrorism evaluates the continuing threat and counter-measures since 9/11 and into the 21st century. It is a sober and measured evaluation of the CBRN threat and argues that continuing terror attacks are inevitable and the war on terror will be a continuing feature in international politics and military action. Benjamin Cole shows how effective counter-terrorist measures must be measured and based not only on effective police and military intelligence and action but on careful evaluation of the politics, motivations, scientific and technical abilities of groups -- no terrorist group has made a nuclear device -- and religious and personal motivation.

The Business of Ethnography: Strategic Exchanges, People and Organizations

Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : Can an anthropologist help us understand the world of business? Armed with this question, veteran anthropologist Brian Moeran embarks on an in-depth study of cultural production and creative industries in Japan. Moeran is able to shed light not only on social behavior and human relations in general but, more specifically, on the importance of strategic exchange to all business practices. Moeran''s fieldwork, rooted in participant-observation of business life in communities and corporations, leads him to an original theory of how business operates. Culture is not all-powerful, Moeran shows. Instead, social structures strongly influence behavior. At the heart of this analysis is a firm belief in fieldwork and ethnography--terms much bandied about in business, management and cultural studies, but rarely undertaken in depth. The Business of Ethnography is a clarion call for anthropologists to rethink their discipline beyond traditional fieldwork sites.

Description : From booties and scarves to art and fashion, The Culture of Knitting addresses knitting as art, craft, design, fashion and performance, and as an aspect of the everyday. The book also highlights the diversity and complexity of knitting in all its guises. The Culture of Knitting investigates not merely why knitting is so popular now but also the reasons why knitting has such longevity. By assessing the literature of knitting, manuals, patterns, social and regional histories, alongside testimonial discussions with artists, designers, craftspeople and amateurs, the book offers new ways of seeing and new methods of critiquing knitting - without the constraints of disciplinary boundaries - in the hope of creating an environment in which knitting can be valued, recognized and discussed.

The Word Became Fresh: How To Preach From Old Testament Narrative Texts

Product : The Word Became Fresh: How To Preach From Old Testament Narrative Texts
Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : I am a bit puzzled over why many Christians seem to think the Old Testament is such a 'problem.' I know the usual answers to that but I can find many of the same 'difficulties' with the New Testament. What I am not so puzzled about is why some pastors and teachers are perplexed about expounding Old Testament texts. For nearly two hundred years a skeptical brand of Old Testament criticism has largely held sway in our universities and divinity halls; it 'un-godded' the Old Testament, implied the Old Testament documents were extremely complex and involved and managed to make Old Testament studies mostly boring, lifeless and dull. Of course the occasional student finds this high priestly craft of Old Testament criticism attractive but many simply write the Old Testament off. If it's as complicated as they have been taught then it is far too bewildering and esoteric for them to bother about - except for dipping into the Psalms for occasional funerals. I'm not on a crusade against the villains of Old Testament studies. One learns even from the 'villains.' And there have been far more hopeful signs in Old Testament studies in recent years. But I still believe that traditional Old Testament criticism has had the effect of killing the Old Testament for the church. This little tome can hardly reverse that, but it is meant as an exercise in reading the Old Testament for fun and profit. As my mother-in-law used to say, 'It's different anyway.' And maybe it will help. Most of what I do in the following pages involves discussing examples of Old Testament narratives. I have tried to select examples from a broad range of possibilities. By the way, I assume that you have the biblical text handy in order to carry on your 'Berean' work. Dale Ralph Davis

The City in Biblical Perspective

Product : The City in Biblical Perspective
Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : The city is an ambiguous symbol in the Bible. The founder of the first city is the murderer, Cain. The city of Jerusalem is the place chosen by God, yet is also a place of wrong-doing and injustice. Jesus seems to have largely avoided cities except Jerusalem, where he was crucified. ''The City in Biblical Perspective'' examines the archaeological and social background of the urban biblical world and explores the implications of the deliberate ambiguities in the biblical text. The book aims to deepen our understanding of both the biblical and the contemporary city by asking how the Bible''s complex understanding of the city can illuminate our own ever more urban time.

Delivering the Word: Preaching and Exegesis in the Western Christian Tradition

Product : Delivering the Word: Preaching and Exegesis in the Western Christian Tradition
Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : Biblical texts have been used consistently in sermons throughout Christian history. Preachers have transformed the texts into an aural experience, using them to evangelize, educate, edify, exhort, or even terrify, their audiences. Sermons have enabled Scripture to be communicated to people from a wide range of social backgrounds. ''Delivering the Word'' examines the power of preaching and its reception across two millennia of homilies: from St Paul, Origen, Chrysostom, Augustine and Hildegard of Bingen to Jonathan Edwards, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Aimee Semple McPherson, and Chris Brain. In its exploration of the impact of the sermon on the interpretation of Scripture, ''Delivering the Word'' will be of interest to students of biblical and religious studies.

Description : The Christian myth is entangled with American politics, with the nation''s image of its own manifest destiny. ''Christian Mentality'' analyses the myths that have shaped America''s collective mentality.
