Doubting Sex: Inscriptions, Bodies and Selves in Nineteenth-century Hermaphrodite case histories

Product : Doubting Sex: Inscriptions, Bodies and Selves in Nineteenth-century Hermaphrodite case histories
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : An adolescent girl is mocked when she takes a bath with her peers, because her genitals look like those of a boy. A couple visits a doctor asking to create more space in the woman for intercourse. A doctor finds testicular tissue in a woman with appendicitis, and decides to keep his findingsquiet. These are just a few of the three hundred European case histories of people whose sex was doubted during the long nineteenth century that Geertje Mak draws upon in her remarkable new book. How did people deal with such situations? How did they decide to which sex a person should belong? This groundbreaking analysis of clinical case histories shows how sex changed from an outward appearance inscribed in a social body to something to be found deep inside body and self. A fascinating, easy to follow, yet sophisticated argument addressing major issues of the history of body, sex, and self, this volume will fit advanced undergraduate courses, while challenging specialists.

Power and Reputation at the Court of Louis XIII: The career of Charles DAlbert, duc de Luynes (1578-1621)

Product : Power and Reputation at the Court of Louis XIII: The career of Charles DAlbert, duc de Luynes (1578-1621)
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : This book seeks to rehabilitate the reputation of Charles d''Albert, duc de Luynes, the controversial favourite of Louis XIII often maligned by historians. Kettering argues that the traditional historical interpretation of Luynes is significantly influenced by the testimony of Richelieu, whosubjected Luynes to a devastating character assassination in his memoirs. Richelieu''s malice and the bias in histories based upon his memoirs justify another look at Luynes'' career. This book sifts through the historical evidence to offer a new perspective on Luynes, arguing that his contributions to the early years of Louis XIII''s government have been insufficientlyappreciated, and in the process throws light upon a dark, unpleasant corner of Richelieu''s personality often ignored by historians. As well as advanced students and historians of early modern France, this book should interest those specialising in the history of the European courts, power politics, patronage and printed pamphlet literature.

European social democracy during the global economic crisis: Renovation or resignation?

Product : European social democracy during the global economic crisis: Renovation or resignation?
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : This book addresses the question of how social democratic parties in Europe have responded to the global economic crisis - at the national level, across the European Union, and within the institutions of the EU. Many commentators have been keen to see a social democratic response to the globaleconomic crisis that began with the sub-prime crisis and subsequently morphed into a full financial and economic crisis, from the collapse of Lehman Brothers onwards. In order for a social democratic alternative to globalised and finance-driven capitalism to emerge, however, we also need socialdemocratic parties to be moving in the direction of producing such policies, and for them to be in a viable and popular form. This book is one of the first to assess whether this is the case. The book draws together some of the most well-known and prestigious scholars of social democracy and social democratic parties, along with a number of impressive new scholars in the field, to present a compelling and up to date analysis of social democratic fortunes in the contemporary period. Itbenefits from an analysis of social democratic parties'' experiences in 6 different countries - the UK, Sweden, Germany, France, Spain, and Greece - along with a number of chapters on social democracy in the European Union. It will be of interest to all scholars and students of social democracy and social democratic parties, European politics, party politics, and political economy.

Framing cosmologies: The anthropology of worlds

Product : Framing cosmologies: The anthropology of worlds
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : How is the ethnographic study of cosmologies relevant to contemporary anthropology? How might such an orientation, understood as a focus on the ways in which the horizons of human worlds are imagined and engaged, illuminate understandings of the contemporary world? This book addresses thesequestions by bringing together anthropologists whose research is informed by a concern with cosmological dimensions of social life in different ethnographic settings. Its overall aim is to reaffirm the value of the cosmological frame as a continuing source of analytical insight. Attending to the novel cosmological formations that emerge in such fields as modern markets, political landscapes, digital media and popular cinema, the book''s key task is to explore how modern circumstances are constituted within the variable imagination of worlds and their horizons. In doing so,the book also placed the comparative study of cosmologies in relation to broader trends in contemporary anthropological thinking. The book includes contributions by such leading anthropologists as Don Handelman, Caroline Humphrey, Bruce Kapferer, Daniel Miller, Marshall Sahlins, and GregorySchrempp, as well chapters by a range of exciting younger scholars. It will be of interest to all students and researchers in anthropology, as well as scholars in fields as diverse as film studies, cultural studies, comparative religion, science and technology studies, and broader socialtheory.

Sara Paretsky: Detective fiction as trauma literature

Product : Sara Paretsky: Detective fiction as trauma literature
Category : Books>Fiction and Literature
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : This is the first book-length study of Sara Paretsky''s detective fiction. Paretsky is known for her influential V.I. Warshawski series, which transformed the masculine hard-boiled detective formula into a vehicle for feminist values. But Paretsky does more than this. She uses contemporaryinstances of corporate malfeasance and political corruption to indict the indifference, inadequacy, and betrayals of institutions charged with promoting the public good. Her novels also illustrate the extent to which detective fiction acts as a literature of trauma, allowing Paretsky to address thepolitics of agency in ways that go beyond the personal, for trauma always has a social and a political dimension. She not only uses her detective to examine the dynamics and impact of coercive power, but also to explore potential strategies for resistance. Paretsky''s work exploits the way detective fiction mirrors the writing of history. Here, Paretsky uses the form to expose the partiality of historical accounts - whether they be personal, institutional, or national - that authorise the forgetting of a particularly insidious kind. Significantly, all these issues are explored within the framework of the traditional hard-boiled detective novel. As a result, Paretsky''s achievement forces us to acknowledge the deeply subversive potential of detective fiction. Paretsky has already been recognised as an important figure in the development of the hard-boiled tradition, but not, as this indicates, for all the right reasons. The book is essential reading for students and critics of detective fiction.

Noble Society in Scotland

Product : Noble Society in Scotland
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : Even in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries it was conventional for humanist writers and their Enlightenment successors to regard the nobility which dominated early modern Scottish society and politics as violent, unlearned, and backward - at best conservatively bound to feudal codes ofbehaviour; at worst, brutal, corrupt and anarchic. It is a view that prevails still. Keith Brown takes issue with this. The author draws on extensive research in the rich archives of the Scottish noble houses to demonstrate that the conventional view of the Scottish nobility is wrong. He shows that the nobility were as steeped in contemporary European debates and movements as they were rooted in local society. Farfrom holding back Scotland''s economic and cultural development, they embraced economic change, seized financial opportunities, led the way in the pursuit of Renaissance ideals through their own learning and in the education of their children, and were partners in religious reform. Professor Brownmakes extensive comparisons with the noble societies elsewhere in Europe to reveal how the differences and above all the similarities between the lives of Scottish nobles and their peers abroad.Elegantly written and illustrated with a wealth of contemporary incident and anecdote, the book presents an intimate and vivid picture of noble life in Scotland. It challenges and will change perceptions of early modern Scotland. Noble Society in Scotland is the first of two related books on thesubject. The second, on noble power and the relations between the nobility, state and monarchy, will be published by EUP in 2003.

Description : Augustus (63 BC - AD 14), the first Roman emperor, brought peace and stability to Rome after decades of strife and uncertainty. This book presents aselection of the most important scholarship on Augustus and the contribution he made to the development of the Roman state in the early imperial period.Chapters include: Augustus'' dramatic rise to prominence following the death of Julius Caesar in 44 BC and the nature of his powers first as triumvir, then as Princeps; his policy regarding overseas wars and expansion, his administrative and military reforms of the Roman state; the role of his ownfamily, his wife Livia, his son-in-law Agrippa and his adopted sons Gaius and Lucius Caesar and then Tiberius, in public life; his concern to reinforce Roman religion and family life; the development of an ideology that helped bolster his authority as ruler of an expanded Empire, including theimportance of visual imagery, monuments and literature in the far-flung propagation of his image as leader; and the impact that his regime made on the communities of the Roman provinces.Jonathan Edmondson sets these papers into the general context of major trends in the study of Augustus in Britain, Europe and North America since the nineteenth century. An Introduction to Late Modern English

Product : An Introduction to Late Modern English
Category : Books>Reference and Language
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : Some twenty years ago it was widely believed that nothing much happened to the English language since the beginning of the eighteenth century. Recent research has shown that this is far from true, and this book offers an introduction to a period that forms the tail end of the standardisationprocess (codification and prescription), during which important social changes such as the Industrial Revolution are reflected in the language. Late Modern English is currently receiving a lot of scholarly attention, mainly as a result of new developments in sociohistorical linguistics and corpus linguistics. By drawing on such research the present book offers a much fuller account of the language of the period than was previously possible. It is designed for students and beginning scholars interested in Late Modern English. The volume includes: * a basis in recent research by which sociolinguistic models are applied to earlier stages of the language (1700-1900) * a focus on people as speakers (wherever possible) and writers of English* Research questions aimed at acquiring skills at working with important electronicresearch tools such as Eighteenth Century Collections Online (ECCO), the Oxford English Dictionary and the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography* Reference to electronically available texts and databases such as Martha Ballard''s Diary, the Proceedings of the Old Bailey and Mrs Beeton''s Book ofHousehold Management.

Sibawayh on ?imalah (Inclination): Text, Translation, Notes And Analysis

Product : Sibawayh on ?imalah (Inclination): Text, Translation, Notes And Analysis
Category : Books>Reference and Language
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : An 8th-century scholar and linguist born in Persia, Sibawayh is to Arabic linguistics what Panini is to Indian linguistics. He departed from the traditional methods of doing analysis to launch a more objective, descriptive and formal paradigm of linguistic analysis. Sibawayh wrote only onebook called Al-Kitab ''the book'', considered to be the most thorough grammar of Classical Arabic ever written. His grammar established the foundations of Arabic linguistics as it became a statement of the new paradigm, and the book has become the model for all subsequent grammarians of Arabic. The treatise on ?imalah ''inclination'' is part of this grammar. It brings together the disparate mechanisms of ''inclination'' by stating the conditions for its occurrence. This is not a purely an abstract treatise, but a study that looks over the various dialects of Arabic and formulates theconditions under which ''inclination'' takes place. Though the triggers for ''inclination'' are the presence of an [i] or a [y], either expressed or implied, in contexts where an [a] changes to an [e], the consonantal constraints to prevent these changes are also carefully detailed. As a characteristicof Sibawayh''s work, he also accounts for all the exceptional cases in a comprehensive manner. The treatise shows the systematic nature of ''inclination'', with a rich display of data from actual occurrences in the language. It also displays the optional nature of ''inclination'' as different dialects make use of some triggers but not of others. The six chapters take up the topic of inclinationfrom its most basic contexts like the occurrence of the [i] trigger, and the occurrence of the [y] trigger, to the exceptional cases, the consonantal segments that prevent inclination, the influence of [r] on inclination, and the effect of inclination on the harakat ''motions/short vowel''.

Description : Despite what its title might suggest, Death and Desire is a meditation on life. Using the texts of Hegel, Heidegger, and Deleuze, the author argues that philosophy has been dominated by a form of thought that focuses exclusively on death. The importance of Death and Desire lies in its refusalof the morbidity of much contemporary philosophy. Its uniqueness lies in placing Hegel, Heidegger, and Deleuze in conversation. Its usefulness lies in the clarity with which it articulates and compares these very diverse thinkers.

Description : Jacques Derrida (1930-2004) was the most original and inspiring writer and philosopher of our time. In a series of distinctive essays that are at once self-contained and intricately linked, Royle explores the legacies of Derrida''s thinking in the context of philosophy, language, globalisation, war, terrorism, justice, the democracy to come, poetry, literature, memory, mourning, the gift, friendship and dreams. Lucid, inventive and at times funny, Royle allows us to appreciate how much Derrida''s work has altered the ways we read and think. Autobiography, children''s literature, the Gothic and modernist fiction, for example, figure together with philosophy, queer studies, speech act theory and psychoanalysis. The writings of Horace Walpole, Herman Melville, E. M. Forster, Elizabeth Bowen, Joe Brainard and David McKee are illuminatinglyput in play alongside Shakespeare.Royle''s book suggests that one of Derrida''s most profound legacies has to do with the combination of responsibility and freedom his work inspires for both reading and writing. Description : From the new generation of London novelists, such as Martin Amis and Ian McEwan, to feminism in the writing of Angela Carter and Jeanette Winterson, Joseph Brooker relates developments in fiction, poetry and drama to social change. He shows how working class writers such as James Kelman and Tony Harrison protested against Thatcherism and explores the voices of Black British writers including Fred D''Aguiar and Hanif Kureishi. The Politics of Radical Democracy

Product : The Politics of Radical Democracy
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : This book addresses the idea of radical democracy and, in particular, its poststructuralist articulation. It analyses the approach to radical democracy taken by a number of contemporary theorists and political commentators, including Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe, Judith Butler, WilliamConnolly, Jacques Ranciere, Claude Lefort, Sheldon Wolin, Michael Hardt, and Antonio Negri, and Giorgio Agamben. By examining critically the accounts of democracy advanced by these theorists, this volume explores how a more radically conceived theory of democracy might be extended in a moreegalitarian and inclusive direction. The strand of radical democracy examined in this book is defined by a number of characteristics:* Democracy is conceptualised understood as a fugitive condition, being open to perpetual disruption and reinvention* The relationship between the state and civil society is regarded as the site where theopen-ended ''promise'' of democracy is fought out* There is an emphasis on questions of politiquestions of political renewal* There is a deep suspicion of identity-based political claims* Politics is conceived as either the site of or as one of the mechanisms for identity construction* Democraticpolitics is understood as a politics of contestation and disagreement* Democracy is regarded as always at least partially conflictual and not a means through which violence and conflict can be permanently eradicated* There is a deep suspicion of identity-based political claims* The political is assumed to be ontologically conflictual, with such conflict being understood as ultimately ineradicable from politics, though the form it takes necessarily varies from time to time and context to context* The book clarifies the concept of radical democracy by mapping the field, andelaborates it further through a critical engagement with the works of its key proponents. In addition, it draws on the insights of radical democratic theory to explore a range of concrete political cases (e.g. the struggles of indigenous people, same-sex marriage, societies emerging from prolongedsocial and political strife, and the role of social movements in opposing processes of globalization) in order to illustrate its practical nature.

The Politics of Postanarchism

Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : What is the relevance of anarchist thought for politics and political theory today? While many have dismissed anarchism in the past, Saul Newman contends that anarchism''s heretical critique of authority, and its insistence on full equality and liberty, places it at the forefront of the radicalpolitical imagination today. With the unprecedented expansion of state power in the name of security, the current ''crisis of capitalism'' and the terminal decline of Marxist and social democratic projects, it is time to reconsider anarchism as a form of politics. This book seeks to renew anarchist thought through the concept ofpostanarchism.

Global Democracy: The Case for a World Government

Product : Global Democracy: The Case for a World Government
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : Is world government the answer to pressing global issues such as war, global injustices and environmental problems? Torbjorn Tannsjo presents the case for this idea. The notion of a sovereign world government has been defended in the past by philosophers such as Bertrand Russell and A.C. Ewing, but has been eclipsed by less radical ideas to do with peaceful cooperation between sovereign states or, at most, through systems of shared sovereignty. Tannsjo argues that such solutions cannot be effective; moreover he argues, in response to philosophers such as Kant and Rawls, that not only is a world government necessary if we want to solve pressing global problems, it is desirable in its own right.Short, simple to read, and focusing on the keyarguments, Global Democracy is intended for anyone who wants to start to think about political solutions to global problems, putting them into a perspective that deserves to be taken seriously.

Description : This volume provides an overview of all aspects of Hong Kong English in a style designed for undergraduates and general readers. As a former British colony, Hong Kong used English as the language of government, law and education in the early days of colonial rule. Since the Handover fromBritish to Chinese rule in 1997, it is no longer used as the primary language of government. However, the status of English has survived the decline of colonial rule, as English has become an international language which is indispensable for a service-oriented economy such as present-day Hong Kong. Its use is still widespread in legal contexts, and English is the medium of instruction in at least a quarter of secondary schools.Outwith the realm of education, English is important as a means of international communication in the fields of banking and finance, business, and in the tourism and hospitality industry. English is therefore integrated into Hong Kong life in various ways and this has resulted in a thriving anddeveloping variety of English. This book describes English in Hong Kong as a linguistic phenomenon from the point of view of language structure, but also takes into account historical, socio-cultural and socio-political developments.

Language and Social Change in Central Europe: Discourses on Policy, Identity and the German Language

Product : Language and Social Change in Central Europe: Discourses on Policy, Identity and the German Language
Category : Books>Reference and Language
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : This book explores the dynamics of language and social change in central Europe in the context of the end of the Cold War and eastern expansion of the European Union. One outcome of the profound social transformations in central Europe since the Second World War has been the reshaping of therelationship between particular languages and linguistic varieties, especially between ''national'' languages and regional or ethnic minority languages. Previous studies have investigated these transformed relationships from the macro perspective of language policies, while others have taken more fine-grained approaches to individual experiences with language. Combining these two perspectives for the first time - and focusing on the German language, which has a uniquely complex and problematic history in the region - the authors offer an understanding of the complex constellation of language politics in central Europe.Stevenson and Carl''s analysis draws on a range of theoretical, conceptual and analytical approaches - language ideologies, language policy, positioning theory, discourse analysis, narrative analysis and life histories - and a wide range of data sources, from European and national language policiesto individual language biographies. The authors demonstrate how the relationship between German and other languages has played a crucial role in the politics of language and processes of identity formation in the recent history of central Europe.

The Gods of Ancient Greece: Identities and Transformations

Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : The Greek gods are still very much present in modern consciousness. Although Apollo and Dionysos, Artemis and Aphrodite, Zeus and Hermes are household names, it is much less clear what these divinities meant and stood for in ancient Greece. In fact, they have been very much neglected in modernscholarship. This book brings together a team of international scholars with the aim of remedying this situation and generating new approaches to the nature and development of the Greek gods in the period from Homer until Late Antiquity. The book looks at individual gods, but also asks to what extent cult, myth and literary genre determine the nature of a divinity. How do the Greek gods function in a polytheistic pantheon and what is their connection to the heroes? What is the influence of philosophy? What does archaeology tell usabout the gods? In what way do the gods in Late Antiquity differ from those in classical Greece? This book presents a synchronic and diachronic view of the gods as they functioned in Greek culture until the triumph of Christianity.

Hegels Political Philosophy: A Systematic Reading of the Philosophy of Right

Product : Hegels Political Philosophy: A Systematic Reading of the Philosophy of Right
Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : Hegel''s Elements of the Philosophy of Right is widely acknowledged to be one of the most important works in the history of political philosophy. It is broadly agreed that Hegel intended this work to be interpreted as a significant part of his greater system of speculative philosophy. Wheredisagreement occurs is on the question of the relevance of Hegel''s larger philosophical system to understanding his Philosophy of Right. This is the first book on the subject to take Hegel''s system of speculative philosophy seriously as an important component of any robust understanding of hisPhilosophy of Right. It sets out the difference between systematic and non-systematic readings of the text before discussing important, relevant features of Hegel''s system, in particular, the unique structure of his philosophical arguments. The greater part of the book demonstrates the results of this systematic reading by exploring several areas of Hegel''s political philosophy: his theories of property, punishment, morality, law, monarchy, and war. It is shown that by looking beyond the text to Hegel''s larger philosophical system, wecan achieve an improved understanding of Hegel''s Philosophy of Right.

Description : The Scottish parliamentary and local elections of 2007 were significant for two key reasons: the SNP was brought to power for the first time in its history, posing a fundamental challenge to the 300-year Scottish-English Union; and the local elections used the Single Transferable Vote - thefirst time such an electoral system has been used in Great Britain since 1945. This book will explore the significance of these two developments, asking whether they herald a revolutionary break with the past or simply mark a continuing evolution of existing patterns of Scottish politics. It does so using a unique source of evidence - representative high quality annual sample surveys of the Scottish public that since 1999 have regularly measured how people in Scotland have reacted to devolution and how they have behaved in elections. Description : Shows how central the Second World War still is to post-war writing. Focusing on the upsurge of interest in the Second World War in recent British novels, this monograph explores the ways in which secrecy and secret work - including code-breaking, espionage and special operations - have beenapproached in representations of the war. It considers established writers, including Muriel Spark, Sarah Waters and Kazuo Ishiguro, as well as newer voices, such as Liz Jensen and Peter Ho Davies. The examination of the after-effects of involvement in secret work, inter-generational secrets in a domestic context, political allegiance and sexuality shows how issues of loyalty, deception and betrayal are brought into focus in these novels.

Description : Is Deleuze a Western philosopher? If Deleuzian thought belongs to the tradition of western philosophy, in what sense does the non-West regard Deleuze as a philosopher? Philosophy is equal anywhere on earth. Since Descartes'' ''discovery'' that the non-West could think, western philosophy could nolonger ignore the presence of the non-West, a philosophical otherness in reality. Deleuze recognized the problem of the non-West and suggested a solution with the concept of ''geophilosophy''. In What Is Philosophy? Deleuze, along with Guattari, uses this term for a philosophy of the earth. For Deleuze, thinking is not a matter of the dialectic between subject and object, but rather ''the relationship of territory and the earth''. It is not unusual to relate Deleuze with the non-West or place Deleuze in the non-West; rather the very Deleuzian way to speak of Deleuzian philosophy is inrelation to the non-Deleuzian.This special issue explores Deleuze and the non-West, and includes topics such as the non-Western plane of immanence; the non-Western reception of Deleuze; Deleuze as a philosopher of non-Western ethics; the translation of Deleuze into non-Western languages;geophilosophical studies of Deleuze; and Deleuzian concepts and non-Western philosophy.

Description : What role should the idea of evil have in contemporary moral and social thought? The concept of ''evil'' has long been a key idea in moral discourse. Now, the contributors to this volume make a start on the important task of systematically exploring evil in the context of political theory.Intuitively, we know what evil means. Yet once we begin to think about its meaning we quickly uncover competing definitions. In recent years, political theorists have generally set the concept aside as outdated or inappropriate. Yet the idea that some things are wrong beyond toleration still has significant currency. If ''evil'' cancapture that significance, it merits a closer look.

Description : Between 1907 and 1911, Ferdinand de Saussure gave three series of lectures on the topic of general linguistics. After his death, these lecture notes were gathered together by his students and published as the Course in General Linguistics. And in the past one hundred years, there has been nomore influential and divisive reading of Saussure than that of Jacques Derrida. This book is an examination of Derrida''s philosophical reconstruction of Saussurean linguistics, of the paradigm shift from structuralism to post-structuralism, and of the consequences that continue to resonate in everyfield of the humanities today.Despite the importance of Derrida''s critique of Saussure for cultural studies, philosophy, linguistics and literary theory, no comprehensive analysis has before been written. The magnitude of the task undertaken here makes this book an invaluable resource for those wishing to interrogate theencounter beyond appearances or received wisdom. In this process of a close reading, the following themes become sites of debate between Derrida and Saussure: the originality of Saussure within the history of Western metaphysics; the relationship between speech and writing; the relationshipbetween difference and difference; the intervention of time in structuralism linguistic relativism; and the role of the language user. This long-overdue commentary also poses new questions to structuralism and post-structuralism, and opens up exciting new terrain in linguistic and politicalthought.

Description : Provides an orientation and an array of conceptual and critical tools for scholars theorising political life today. Christopher Robinson connects Wittgenstein''s philosophy to strategies for achieving political vision in this age where politics has been replaced by bureaucracy as thepredominant form of public order, and now takes the form of dissent. In particular, Wittgenstein''s remarks on perception are brought to bear on theory''s historical and etymological roots in clear seeing. This frees the theorist to explore the city of language and sheds fresh light on politicalconcepts such as liberty, dignity, dissent, and ideology.

Description : Would the ''real'' IRA please stand up? Why, and how, the IRA splintered. The Real IRA, the Continuity IRA, the Irish National Liberation Army, the Official IRA and the Provisional IRA have all assumed responsibility for the struggle for Irish freedom over the course of the late-20th century.Yet as recently as 1969 there was only one Irish Republican Army trying to unify Ireland using physical force. Andrew Sanders explains how and why the transition from one IRA to several IRAs occurred, analysing all the dissident factions that have emerged since the outbreak of the Northern Ireland troubles. He looks at why these groups emerged, what their respective purposes are, and why, in an era ofrelative peace and stability in Northern Ireland, they seek to prolong the violence that cost over 3500 lives.

Islamic and Ethical Finance in the United Kingdom

Description : What exactly is ethical finance? Is Islamic finance ethical? Is ethical finance Islamic? Islamic finance is routinely described as ethical. This reflects the fact that self-described ''ethical'' finance is a large and growing sector of the market. It has a very positive image with which Islamicfinancial services seek to associate themselves. Yet the claim that ''Islamic'' and ''ethical'' are synonymous is rarely seriously examined, and nor is the claim that there exists a consistent and generally understood definition of ''ethical'' practice. This book examines a wide range of financial institutions in the UK which fall broadly within theethical sector, considering the nature of their principles and practices, and how they relate to Islamic models and to Muslim communities.

Description : How can the cinema articulate the interstices between visibility and invisibility, and how are such notions of absence and the unseen implicated in the film experience? This study considers the locus of the breathing body in the film experience and its implications for the study of embodimentin film and sensuous spectatorship. Quinlivan puts forward a mode of critical engagement with film shaped by the foregrounding of the human body in the filmic diegesis and the viewing experience. The book''s foregrounding of the human body as an, importantly, breathing body in film, coupled with its fresh engagement with continental philosophy, Post-Structuralist Film Theory and Contemporary Western Cinema, makes a unique and valuable contribution to the field.

Empathy and the Psychology of Literary Modernism

Product : Empathy and the Psychology of Literary Modernism
Category : Books>Fiction and Literature
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : Empathy is a cognitive and affective structure of feeling, a bridge across interpersonal distance. Coined in 1909 to combine English sympathy and German Einfuhlung, empathy is a specifically twentieth-century concept of fellow feeling. Empathy and the Psychology of Literary Modernismlooks into the little-known history of empathy, revealing how this multi-faceted concept had a profound effect on literary modernism.Meghan Marie Hammond shows how five exemplary writers (Henry James, Dorothy Richardson, Katherine Mansfield, Ford Madox Ford, and Virginia Woolf) tackle the so-called problem of other minds in ways that reflect and enrich early twentieth-century discourses of fellow feeling. Hammond argues thatthese authors reconfigure notions of intersubjective experience; their writings mark a key shift away from sympathetic forms of literary representation toward empathic forms that strive to provide an immediate sense of another''s thoughts and feelings. But while literary modernism values empathicexperience as an ideal, it is also teeming with voices that recognize potential for danger, even violence, in acts of empathy. These voices illuminate our culture''s ongoing concern with empathy''s limits.

It analyses foreboding imagery of miasma, sludge and rot across non-fictional and fictional travel narratives, speeches, private journals and medical advice tracts.Well-known authors such as Joseph Conrad are placed in dialogue with minority writers such as Mary Seacole and Africanus Horton in order to understand their different approaches to representing white illness abroad. Description : Mirrors for princes form a substantial and important genre in many pre-modern literatures. Their ostensible purpose is to advise the king; at the same time they assert that the king, if he is truly virtuous, will appreciate being reminded of the contingency of his power. The unknown author ofthe Counsel for Kings studied in this book wrote in a distinctive early tenth-century Iranian environment. He deploys an abundant set of cultural materials representing perennial wisdom of mixed provenances, which he reinvigorates by applying them to the circumstances of his own time and place. The first volume situates Counsel for Kings in its historical context. The second volume gives direct access to a substantial portion of the text through translation and commentary.

Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : In recent years some of the most innovative European and American directors have made films that place the spectator in a position of intense discomfort. Systematically manipulating the viewer, sometimes by withholding information, sometimes through shock or seduction, these films have oftenbeen criticised as amoral, nihilistic, politically irresponsible or anti-humanistic. But how are these unpleasurable viewing experiences created? What do the directors believe they can achieve via this ''feel-bad'' experience? How can we situate these films in intellectual history? And why should wewatch, study and teach feel-bad films? Answering these questions through the analysis of work by directors such as Lars von Trier, Gus Van Sant, Claire Denis, Michael Haneke, Lucille Hadzihalilovic, Brian de Palma, Bruno Dumont and Harmony Korine, The Feel-Bad Film invites readers to consider cinematic art as an experimental activitywith ethical norms that are radically different from the ones we would hope to find outside the movie theatre. This textbook offers invaluble insights for students of film-philosophy, film and spectatorship and film theory.About the series: Edinburgh Studies in Film and Intermediality includes scholarly research intended to challenge and expand on the various approaches to Film Studies, bringing together film theory and film aesthetics with the emerging intermedial aspects of the field.

Introduction to the Design of Transconductor-Capacitor Filters

Product : Introduction to the Design of Transconductor-Capacitor Filters
Category : Books>Science and Nature
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : Introduction to the Design of Transconductor-Capacitor Filters is a didactic presentation of a new and fast developing field. Transconductor-capacitor (gm-C) filters are emerging as the technique of choice for highfrequency analog integrated-circuit filtering in the range 1-100 MHz, in both CMOS and bipolar technologies. The primary objective of this book is to present this technique in a way which may be understood by students and practicing engineers entering this new field. The different topics are explained using detailed developed examples: biquad, gyrator and state-variable filters, bipolar and CMOS transconductors, and integrators, concluding with a completed design and SPICE simulation at the transistor level of a high-order filter. This book enables the researcher, who has been given a set of basic filter specifications, to choose a filter topology, design the transconductor and perform SPICE simulations at the transistor level of the complete filter to verify its design. The professional will also be able to access the more advanced literature on gm-C filters published in professional journals and understand what their authors are talking about, so that they can profit from other''s experience. As such, readers will enrich their knowledge and find solutions to the problems that surely will be encountered during the practical design of a filter. This book serves as an excellent reference for researchers and design engineers, and is suitable for use as the textbook for advanced courses on the subject.

The Discipline of Philosophy and the Invention of Modern Jewish Thought

Product : The Discipline of Philosophy and the Invention of Modern Jewish Thought
Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : Exploring the subject of Jewish philosophy as a controversial construction site of the project of modernity, this book examines the implications of the different and often conflicting notions that drive the debate on the question of what Jewish philosophy is or could be.The idea of Jewish philosophy begs the question of philosophy as such. But Jewish philosophy does not just reflect what philosophy lacks. Rather, it challenges the project of philosophy itself. Examining the thought of Spinoza, Moses Mendelssohn, Heinrich Heine, Hermann Cohen Franz Rosenzweig,Martin Buber, Margarete Susman, Hermann Levin Goldschmidt, and others, the book highlights how the most philosophic moments of their works are those in which specific concerns of their Jewish questions inform the rethinking of philosophy''s disciplinarity in principal terms. The long overdue recognition of the modernity that informs the critical trajectories of Jewish philosophers from Spinoza and Mendelssohn to the present emancipates not just Jewish philosophy from an infelicitous pigeonhole these philosophers so pointedly sought to reject but, more important, emancipates philosophy from its false claims to universalism.

Description : The German Occupation of France put an end to Maurice Blanchot''s career as a political journalist. In April 1941 he began to publish a weekly column of literary criticism in the Journal des Debats, which became the source for his first critical work, Faux pas (1943). As well as providing aunique perspective on cultural life during the Occupation, these pieces offer crucial insights into the mind and art of a writer who was to become one of the most influential figures on the French literary scene in the second half of the twentieth century. As well as laying the basis for the career of one France''s most original writers and thinkers, these articles also offer a reminder that Blanchot''s political awareness remains undimmed, through clear if sometimes coded acts of criticism or defiance of the prevailing order.

Angels of Mercy: White Women and the History of New Yorks Colored Orphan Asylum

Product : Angels of Mercy: White Women and the History of New Yorks Colored Orphan Asylum
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : William Seraile uncovers the history of the colored orphan asylum, founded in New York City in 1836 as the nation''s first orphanage for African American children. It is a remarkable institution that is still in the forefront aiding children. Although no longer an orphanage, in its currentincarnation as Harlem-Dowling West Side Center for Children and Family Services it maintains the principles of the women who organized it nearly 200 years ago.The agency weathered three wars, two major financial panics, a devastating fire during the 1863 Draft Riots, several epidemics, waves of racial prejudice, and severe financial difficulties to care for orphaned, neglected, and delinquent children. Eventually financial support would come from some ofNew York''s finest families, including the Jays, Murrays, Roosevelts, Macys, and Astors. While the white female managers and their male advisers were dedicated to uplifting these black children, the evangelical, mainly Quaker founding managers also exhibited the extreme paternalistic views endemic atthe time, accepting the advice or support of the African American community only grudgingly. It was frank criticism in 1913 from W. E. B. Du Bois that highlighted the conflict between the orphanage and the community it served, and it wasn''t until 1939 that it hired the first black trustee.More than 15,000 children were raised in the orphanage, and throughout its history letters and visits have revealed that hundreds if not thousands of old boys and girls looked back with admiration and respect at the home that nurtured them throughout their formative years.Weaving together African American history with a unique history of New York City, this is not only a painstaking study of a previously unsung institution of black history but a unique window onto complex racial dynamics during a period when many failed to recognize equality among all citizens as aworthy purpose.

Divine Multiplicity: Trinities, Diversities, and the Nature of Relation

Product : Divine Multiplicity: Trinities, Diversities, and the Nature of Relation
Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : The essays in this volume ask if and how trinitarian and pluralist discourses can enter into fruitful conversation with one another. Can trinitarian conceptions of divine multiplicity open the Christian tradition to more creative and affirming visions of creaturely identities, difference, andrelationality including the specific difference of religious plurality? Where might the triadic patterning evident in the Christian theological tradition have always exceeded the boundaries of Christian thought and experience? Can this help us to inhabit other religious traditions'' conceptions ofdivine and/or creaturely reality? The volume also interrogates the possibilities of various discourses on pluralism by putting them in a concrete pluralist context and asking to what extent pluralist discourse can collect within itself a convergent diversity of orthodox, heterodox, postcolonial, process, poststructuralist, liberationist, and feminist sensibilities while avoiding irruptions of conflict, competition, or the logic of mutual exclusion.

Realizing Capital: Financial and Psychic Economies in Victorian Form

Product : Realizing Capital: Financial and Psychic Economies in Victorian Form
Category : Books>Fiction and Literature
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : During a tumultuous period when financial speculation began rapidly to outpace industrial production and consumption, Victorian financial journalists commonly explained the instability of finance by criticizing its inherent artifice drawing persistent attention to what they called fictitiouscapital. In a shift that naturalized this artifice, this critique of fictitious capital virtually disappeared by the 1860s, being replaced by notions of fickle investor psychology and mental equilibrium encapsulated in the fascinating metaphor of psychic economy. In close rhetorical readings of financial journalism, political economy, and the works of Dickens, Eliot, and Trollope, Kornbluh examines the psychological framing of economics, one of the nineteenth century''s most enduring legacies, reminding us that the current dominant paradigm for understandingfinancial crisis has a history of its own. She shows how novels illuminate this displacement and ironize ideological metaphors linking psychology and economics, thus demonstrating literature''s unique facility for evaluating ideas in process. Inheritors of this novelistic project, Marx and Freud eachadvance a critique of psychic economy that refuses to naturalize capitalism.

The Rebellious No: Variations on a Secular Theology of Language

Product : The Rebellious No: Variations on a Secular Theology of Language
Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : This book aims to renew theological thinking by extending and radicalizing an iconoclastic and existentialist mode of thought. It proposes a theology whose point of departure assumes and accepts the critiques of religion launched by Nietzsche, Freud, Marx, and Feuerbach but nevertheless takestheological desire seriously as a rebellious force working within, but against, an anthropomorphic, phallogocentric worldview. As a theology of language, it does not claim any privileged access to some transcendent divine essence or ground of Being. On the contrary, for Noelle Vahanian theology is a strictly secular discourse, like any other discourse, but aware of its limitations and wary of great promises - its ownincluded. Its faith is that this secular theological desire can be a force against the constitutive indifference of thought, and it is a meditative act of rebellion. Aphoristic instead of argumentative, this book offers an original and constructive engagement with such seminal issues asindifference, belief, madness, and love.
