Ideology, Identity And Assumptions

Product : Ideology, Identity And Assumptions
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : Michigan State University Press, ProQuest, Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, and The New York Public Library are pleased to present a unique research, study and teaching resource for professors and students of black studies, the Schomburg Studies on the Black Experience (SSBE).      In the more than thirty-five years since the field of black studies established its presence in American higher education, the volume of research, writing, and publications on the global black experience has increased exponentially. Scholars in African American and African Diasporan studies have contributed in significant ways to the development of this new knowledge. So have scholars in mainstream disciplines in the United States and Europe, as well as scholars and intellectuals in Africa and throughout the Americas. When added to the extraordinary volume of research resources on the black experience that existed before the coming of Black Studies, the challenge of selecting appropriate materials for research, for study, and for teaching has become extremely difficult. Schomburg Studies on the Black Experience is a resource designed to assist users in making such choices. Both the electronic and the printed editions of Schomburg Studies on the Black Experience contain: a critical-review essay for each theme, a selection of essential readings, and research questions for the future. Extensive bibliographies, lists of primary research materials, timelines, and other resources are also included. There are also a multimedia library and links to related websites included in the on-line edition. Schomburg Studies on the Black Experience offers users a way to understand the evolution of scholarship on the selected themes and to access the essential literature that supports it. Schomburg Studies affirms both the quantity and the quality of the intellectual underpinnings of Black Studies.      As part of this collaboration, Michigan State University Press offers the first volume of the book series format that works as a teaching tool with or independently of the database—Ideology, Identity, and Assumptions.

The Battle is Not Yours

Product : The Battle is Not Yours
Category : Books>Fiction and Literature>Fiction>Literary
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : This book is an inspiring true story of a life transformed, but if you did not know that it is based on actual events, you might readily believe that it is a novel, destined to be fashioned into a made-for- TV movie and promoted on talk shows. Certainly its author deserves the attention. With extraordinary effort and an abiding trust in God, Rita J. Bunton transformed her life. Instead of succumbing to heroin addiction, which appeared likely, she found the strength to change everything. She not only got out of an abusive relationship, with her four young children in hand, but she enrolled in college, earned her degree, and eventually became a newspaper reporter, writer, and public information director. Her story is both remarkable and uplifting. What makes it more amazing is that it is true.      When readers first meet Jasmine Armstead, she is a young girl. One of four children of a divorced and emotionally distant mother, growing up poor in Jackson, Michigan, she is kept in line by her grandmother. Jasmine was an honors student until high school, by the time she graduated, her grades had fallen and she was pregnant. She got married at nineteen and was a mother of four (including twins) by the age of twenty-one. Her life spiraled quickly downhill and hit bottom after seven years of heroin use. Broke, desperate, and abused, she prayed to be saved—and her life reversed its seemingly inevitable course. This is an inspiring book. Although its appeal is universal, it has particular allure for women. Portraying four generations in matrilineal relationships that are always loving, if not always warm, it vividly depicts the importance of family—for better and for worse. However, in the end, this is a story about faith: in God, in oneself, and in redemption. It will resonate with readers long after they have closed its covers.

Hidden in the Heartland: The New Wave of Immigrants and the Challenge to America

Product : Hidden in the Heartland: The New Wave of Immigrants and the Challenge to America
Category : Books
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : As other teens returned home from school, thirteen-year-old José Silva headed for work at a restaurant, where he would remain until 2:00 a.m. Francisca Herrera, a tomato picker, was exposed to pesticides while she was pregnant and gave birth to a baby without arms or legs. Silva and Herrera immigrated illegally to the United States, and their experiences are far from unique. In this comprehensive, balanced overview of the immigration crisis, Nancy Brown Diggs examines the abusive, unethical conditions under which many immigrants work, and explores how what was once a border problem now extends throughout the country. Drawing from a wide spectrum of sources, Hidden in the Heartland demonstrates how the current situation is untenable for both illegal immigrants and American citizens. A vivid portrait of the immigration crisis, the book makes a passionate case for confronting this major human rights issue—a threat to the very unity of the country.

Plain of Jars: and Other Stories

Product : Plain of Jars: and Other Stories
Category : Books>Fiction and Literature
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : In the opening story of Geary Hobson’s riveting new collection, Plain of Jars, a young private confides to his friend that he’s trying to leave the Marine Corps. “I am not doing this just because I find the Marine Corps too tough,” Warren Needham says, but because violence is contradictory to his faith. The story’s surprising climax, however, reveals a different side of Needham’s contradictory nature. It’s this acute understanding of conflict that characterizes Plain of Jars, a book populated by bullies, men in combat, abusive spouses, and Native Americans seeking a sense of personal identity in an environment where conformity is law. The U.S. Marine Corps sets the stage for a number of these stories, whose protagonists combat racism, post-traumatic stress syndrome, and the looming reality of the Vietnam War. With pitch perfect dialogue and a sense of the unexpected, Plain of Jars tests the depths of complex lives.

Visualities: Perspectives on Contemporary American Indian Film and Art

Product : Visualities: Perspectives on Contemporary American Indian Film and Art
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 10
Description : In recent years, works by American Indian artists and filmmakers such as Jaune Quick-To-See Smith, Edgar Heap of Birds, Sherman Alexie, Shelley Niro, and Chris Eyre have illustrated the importance of visual culture as a means to mediate identity in contemporary Native America. This insightful collection of essays explores how identity is created and communicated through Native film-, video-, and art-making; what role these practices play in contemporary cultural revitalization; and how indigenous creators revisit media pasts and resignify dominant discourses through their work. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, Visualities: Perspectives on Contemporary American Indian Film and Art draws on American Indian Studies, American Studies, Film Studies, Cultural Studies, Women’s Studies, and Postcolonial Studies. Among the artists examined are Hulleah J. Tsinhnahjinnie, Eric Gansworth, Melanie Printup Hope, Jolene Rickard, and George Longfish. Films analyzed include Imprint, It Starts with a Whisper, Mohawk Girls, Skins, The Business of Fancydancing, and a selection of Native Latin films.

Description : This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1917 Excerpt: ...seen as far as possible and all face one way, with the exception of such varieties as have the back of the standards tinted in coloring other than the ground color of the flower, when the position of such might be judiciously varied. One or two pieces of foliage--a little Gysophila--or light grass, such as Agrostis neublosa, might with advantage be used. But this should not be overdone, and only if the rules allow of it. In staging a collection of twelve varieties, they should be placed in three rows, the back rows being tiered eight or nine inches above the other, and arrange the colors so that they do not clash. Even if the show schedule does not ask for it, name each variety with a neat card placed at the base of each vase. Two very important points for the exhibitor to observe are: (1) follow the rules as to the number of stems per vase and foliage allowed; (2) see to it that the flowers are true to name. Varieties of distinct colors should be used and those that are very nearly like others in the exhibit excluded. Finally, in placing the vases, it is important not to lose sight of the fact that a good color scheme is a great aid to success. CHAPTER II CULTURE OF SWEET PEAS FOR SEEDS 1 Laymen who visit a large seed farm in California marvel at the acreage of sweet peas in that state and wonder how the enormous output will be disposed of. But it must be borne in mind that California grows fully 75 per cent of the sweet peas used all over the world. About 50 per cent of the sweet peas grown in California are exported. Of these much is sent to Great Britain, the remaining 50 per cent to Holland, France, Germany, New Zealand, and Australia. The gardening public of Great Britain, aided by the seedsmen, quickly realized the possibilities of the sw...

Description : Excerpt: ...sometimes he had read a little to her. When he was amused and interested she thought he scarcely looked like an invalid at all, except that his face was so colorless and he was always on the sofa. You are a sly young one to listen and get out of your bed to go following things up like you did that night, Mrs. Medlock said once. But there''s no saying it''s not been a sort of blessing to the lot of us. He''s not had a tantrum or a whining fit since you made friends. The nurse was just going to give up the case because she was so sick of him, but she says she doesn''t mind staying now you''ve gone on duty with her, laughing a little. In her talks with Colin, Mary had tried to be very cautious about the secret garden. There were certain things she wanted to find out from him, but she felt that she must find them out without asking him direct questions. In the first place, as she began to like to be with him, she wanted to discover whether he was the kind of boy you could tell a secret to. He was not in the least like Dickon, but he was evidently so pleased with the idea of a garden no one knew anything about that she thought perhaps he could be trusted. But she had not known him long enough to be sure. The second thing she wanted to find out was this: If he could be trusted

Description : Excerpt: ...is normal and that it is the ether which is at fault. Ah, there you see another blaze on the top of Crowborough Hill. It is the golf clubhouse, or I am mistaken. There is the church clock chiming the hour. It would interest our philosophers to know that man-made mechanisms has survived the race who made it. By George! cried Lord John, rising excitedly from his chair. What''s that puff of smoke? It''s a train. We heard the roar of it, and presently it came flying into sight, going at what seemed to me to be a prodigious speed. Whence it had come, or how far, we had no means of knowing. Only by some miracle of luck could it have gone any distance. But now we were to see the terrific end of its career. A train of coal trucks stood motionless upon the line. We held our breath as the express roared along the same track. The crash was horrible. Engine and carriages piled themselves into a hill of splintered wood and twisted iron. Red spurts of flame flickered up from the wreckage until it was all ablaze. For half an hour we sat with hardly a word, stunned by the stupendous sight. Poor, poor people! cried Mrs. Challenger at last, clinging with a whimper to her husband''s arm. My dear, the passengers on that train were no more animate than the coals into which they crashed or the carbon which they have now become, said Challenger, stroking her hand soothingly. It was a train of the living when it left Victoria, but it was driven and freighted by the dead long before it reached its fate. All over the world the same thing must be going on, said I as a vision of strange happenings rose before me. Think of the ships at sea

Description : Excerpt: ...One might put up with men, but bears! Illustration: Two hours elapsed without bringing any relief to the prisoners; to go out was impossible, and the thick walls excluded all sound. Altamont walked impatiently up and down full of exasperation and excitement at finding himself worsted for once. Hatteras could think of nothing but the Doctor, and of the serious peril which threatened him. Illustration: Oh, if Mr. Clawbonny were only here! said Johnson. What could he do? asked Altamont. Oh, he''d manage to get us out somehow. How, pray? said the American, crossly. If I knew that I should not need him. However, I know what his advice just now would be. What? To take some food; that can''t hurt us. What do you say, Mr. Altamont? Oh, let''s eat, by all means, if that will please you, though we''re in a ridiculous, not to say humiliating, plight. I''ll bet you we''ll find a way out after dinner. No one replied, but they seated themselves round the table. Illustration: Johnson, trained in Clawbonny''s school, tried to be brave and unconcerned about the danger, but he could scarcely manage it. His jokes stuck in his throat. Moreover, the whole party began to feel uncomfortable. The atmosphere was getting dense, for every opening was hermetically sealed. The stoves would hardly draw, and it was evident would soon go out altogether for want of oxygen. Hatteras was the first to see their fresh danger, and he made no attempt to hide it from his companions. If that is the case, said Altamont, we must get out at all risks. Yes, replied Hatteras; but let us wait till night. We will make a hole in the roof, and let in a provision of air, and then one of us can fire out of it on the bears. It is the only thing we can do, I suppose, said Altamont. So it was agreed; but waiting was hard work, and Altamont could not refrain from giving vent to his impatience by thundering...

Description : Excerpt: ...had not understood her at that big brick orphan home. No wonder she had hated it. Little as she was, she was too big for it. She was in a mood to torment herself that night and she lay awake to listen for that dread voice from across the woods. She lay on her left side so they would have good luck next day. She was greatly overwrought and when at last she did hear the sound, loud and heartless with its sudden beginning and sudden end, it startled and terrorized her as if it were indeed that gloomy, windowless equipage of the State Orphan Home, coming to take her away. She pushed her little fingers into her ears so that she could not hear it. . . . CHAPTER XX AN OFFICIAL REBUKE As for Pee-wee, his trouble was quite of another character. The dubious outlook for their great enterprise did not submerge his buoyant spirit. He had been the genius of many colossal enterprises, most of them falling short of his glowing predictions, and his ingenious mind passed from one thing to another with no lingering regrets. He usually invested so much enthusiasm in organization that he had none left for maintenance. He did not stick at anything long enough to be disappointed in it; there were too many other worlds to be conquered. His heart was no longer in the refreshment parlor and he was already finding solace in becoming his own solitary customer, by eating the taffy which he could not sell. There had been so few things in Pepsy''s poor little life that she had put her whole intense little heart and soul in this and was resolved that this hero from the great world of Bridgeboro should buy the tents which in plain fact he had already forgotten about. So it happened that while Pepsy was lying on her left side (one of Licorice Stick''s prescriptions) to insure good luck for the morrow, Pee-wee was dangling his legs from the counter eating a doughnut. What concerned him now was this mystery of the speeding cyclists. That was the big thing in his young life. He believed...

All this was current gossip in the town, and believed by many. 119 My parents had sense enough not to tell me, but when I was old enough to be sent to the district school, I heard all this, and more, too; and the worst of it was I believed all I heard. I had never been near the house, but when I heard the stories, I got another boy for company and went to look at it from the top of a near-by hill. Makuro The master said: Forty centuries has China been content to plough, to sow, to reap, and with 59 her harvest support one-quarter of the human lives on our planet. Drudgery has been her lot, frugality her virtue. Only so had she lease of breath. Now she is to unlock her mines, build ships, and roads of commerce, and with the magic of machinery set her people free. We cannot shut them out by war. We can do it solely by making China a true democracy where the people themselves own the magic tools and the great ways to the markets. To do this is the work of all who love Freedom, and I know no other goddess. Were these your words, Yu Tai Shun? Shun Yes . my words. Makuro That was five years ago. From all parts of the earth come powers fulfilling your fear. Leagued with our own purblind princes and dwellers in the dusk, they hover over China, waiting for war and bribery to dismember her. Men who plucked their own fruit, and took food from their own gardens, now cannot eat until they have torn new treasure out of the earth for the kind Briton and the good Lei Kung Sang. Shun Their days of work were always long and weary. Ching But they toiled as free men in the sun, and as free men sang from the river-boats when the moon rose. If two people talking together have to cross each other so as to change their places on the stage, the one who has just spoken should cross before the one who is going to speak. Learn to stand still. As a rule, do not speak when you are crossing the stage, but cross first and then speak. Let the last speaker get his sentence well out before you begin yours. 94 If you are a comic actor, don''t run away with the piece by over-doing your fun. Never spoil another actor''s points by trying to make the audience laugh whilst he is speaking. It is inexcusably bad stage-manners. If the audience applauds, wait till the noise of the clapping is over to finish your speech. Rehearse without your book in the last rehearsals, so as to get into the way of hearing the prompter, and catching the word from him when your memory fails you. Practise your part before a looking-glass, and say it out aloud. A part may be pat in your head, and very stiff on your tongue. The Green-room is generally a scene of great confusion in private theatricals. Besides getting everything belonging to your dress together yourself and in good time, I advise you to have a little hand-basket, such as you may have used at the seaside or in the garden, and into this to put pins, hair-pins, a burnt cork, needles and thread, a pair of scissors, a pencil, your part, and any small things you may require. It is easy to drop them into the basket again. Small things get mislaid under bigger ones when one is dressing in a hurry; and a hero who is flustered by his moustache having fallen under the washstand well out of sight is apt to forget his part when he has found the moustache. 95 Remember that Right and Left in stage directions mean the right and left hand of the actor as he faces the audience. I will not burden you with any further advice for yourself, and I...

Description : Excerpt: ... must have had grace enough to show a martyr-spirit in resisting so gross an invention as the baptizing of infants would have been, if apostolic example had restricted baptism to those who were capable of faith. Did Paul reprove an abuse of the Lord''s Supper, among the Corinthians, and would he not have given an injunction against so Jewish a superstition as the baptizing of children in place of the antiquated circumcision would have been, if it were not commanded, had the churches in his day seemed inclined to practise it? Mr. M. All these things amount to a demonstration, in my view. Pg 154 Dr. D. You would like to hear something from Augustine , whose Confessions you have read with so much interest. In his writings, on Genesis, Augustine says, about two hundred and eighty-eight years after the apostles, The custom of our mother, the church, in baptizing infants, must not be disregarded nor accounted useless, and it must by all means be believed to be (apostolica traditio) a thing handed down to us by the apostles. It is most justly believed to be no other than a thing delivered by apostolic authority; that it came not by a general council, or by any authority later or less than that of the apostles. He also speaks of baptizing infants by the authority of the whole church, which, he says, was undoubtedly delivered to it by our Lord and his apostles. Augustine was a man of distinguished piety and learning, whose testimony is every way worthy of implicit confidence. But, connected with his history, we have another substantial evidence with regard to the subject. He conducted a famous controversy against the Pelagians, who denied original sin. They were confronted with the argument from infant baptism. Why, it was Pg 155 said, are infants baptized, if they need no change of nature? It would have been a triumphant answer could they have shown that it was an unscriptural practice, not countenanced by Christ or the apostles. But Pelagius...

Description : Excerpt: ...anointed with oil and turmeric by their respective sisters. When everybody has gathered under the marriage-bower the boy and girl are brought out of the house and a heap is made of a plough-yoke, a bundle of thatching-grass and a curry-stone. The bride and bridegroom are made to stand on the curry-stone, the boy touching the heels of the bride with his toes, and a long piece of cloth is put round them to screen them from the public. Only their heads and feet can be seen. A goblet full of vermilion is presented to the boy, who dips his finger in it and makes three lines on the forehead of the girl; and the girl does the same to the boy, but as she has to reach him over her shoulder and cannot see him, the boy gets it anywhere, on his face, which never fails to provoke hearty bursts of laughter. When this is complete, Dalton states, a gun is fired and then by some arrangement vessels full of water, placed over the bower, are upset, and the young couple and those near them receive a drenching shower-bath, the women shouting, ''The marriage is done, the marriage is done.'' They now retire into an apartment prepared for them, ostensibly to change their clothes, but they do not emerge for some time, and when they do appear they are saluted as man and wife. 306 7. Special Customs Meanwhile the guests sit round drinking handias or earthen pots full of rice-beer. The bride and bridegroom come out and retire a second time and are called out for the following rite. A vessel of beer is brought and the bride carries a cupful of it to the bridegroom''s brother, but instead of giving it into his hand she deposits it on the ground in front of him. This is to seal a kind of tacit agreement that from that time the bridegroom''s brother will not touch his sister-in-law, and was probably instituted to mark the abolition of the former system of fraternal polyandry, customs of an analogous nature being found among the...

Their eyes, nose, and ears, as well as the genital organs, all require the most rigid daily cleanliness. The bugbear second summer need not be feared by the mother who takes particular care to see that: The drinking water is boiled or distilled. The orange is not overripe. The banana is not underripe or overripe and is not eaten in chunks. The milk is fresh and pasteurized. The baby does not eat candy, ice cream, or other forbidden foods. The baby''s bowels move daily. He does not remain dirty. He naps daily. He is protected from dust, flies, flees, and mosquitoes. He does not go visiting, to church, shops, or movies. The second summer is no harder than the first, as good clean water, easily digested foods, and good general hygiene are all a baby needs at this time. A large army of little folks grow up in spite of the little care they get and the place in which they live. Did they not possess good vital resistance, sound nerves, and good digestion, the children of the slums and of the ghetto would quickly succumb to their unhygienic surroundings. Description : Excerpt: ... last the composer''s patience was exhausted. I see, my lord, said he, it is you who are so good as to give lessons to me. I do not want your lessons, for I feel that I do not merit the honour of having such a master as yourself. Good morning. Haydn then left the room, and sent his servant to show the man out. One of Haydn''s biographers says that the composer soon gauged the musical taste of the English public, and rearranged most of his compositions written earlier, before producing them in London. Our national manners in the concert-room would seem to have descended to us from our grandfathers, for we find Haydn doubting as to which of two evils he shall choose: whether to insist on his stipulated composition being placed in the first or the second part of each concert''s programme. In the former case its effect would be marred by the continual noisy entrance of late comers, while in the latter case a considerable portion of the audience would probably be asleep before it began. Haydn chose this, however, as the preferable alternative, and the loud chord (Paukenschlag) of the andante in the ''Surprise'' symphony is said to have been the comical device he hit upon for rousing the slumberers. Haydn was very desirous that one of his compositions should be performed at an Ancient Music Concert in London, but one of their rules was to admit only work by composers who had been dead twenty years. The management would make no exception, even for Haydn, and it was not until forty-one years later that they produced a composition by him,

Every one who has a lamp hastens then to examine its condition and stimulate its flame: all who have borne Christ''s name search themselves to see whether they are ready for his presence. There is no visible distinction at this stage between those who have only a name that they live, and those who have attained also the new nature: all bestir themselves to examine the ground of their hope, and the state of their preparation. At this point the decisive difference which existed in secret long before emerges into view. The foolish virgins, having no oil in separate vessels, could not keep the flame of their lamps any longer alive. Both classes had a profession; the formalists had a profession and nothing more. Finding in the hour of their extremity that they had neglected their souls while the day of grace was running, they make a piteous appeal to believing neighbours for help,

Description : Excerpt: ...indifference of those whom it has shaded for generations, and who carelessly permitted the telegraph and telephone linemen to use it or chop it at their will. But latterly there has been an awakening which means protection, I think, for this fine old landmark. The two superb elms, known as Paul and Virginia, that make notable the north shore of the Susquehanna at Wilkesbarre, are subjects of local pride; which seems, however, not strong enough to prevent the erection of a couple of nasty little shanties against their great trunks. There can be no doubt, however, that the sentiment of reverence for great trees, and of justice to them for their beneficent influence, is spreading westward and southward from New England. It gives me keen pleasure to learn of instances where paths, pavements or roadways have been changed, to avoid doing violence to good trees; and a Pg 142 recent account of the creation of a trust fund for the care of a great oak, as well as a unique instance in Georgia, where a deed has been recorded giving a fine elm a quasi-legal title to its own ground, show that the rights of trees are coming to be recognized. Pg 143 The English elm in winter I have said little of the habitat, as the botanist puts it, of the American elm. It graces all North America east of the Rockies, and the specimens one sees in Michigan or Canada are as happy, apparently, as if they grew in Connecticut or in Virginia. Our increasingly beautiful national Capital, the one city with an intelligent and controlled system of tree-planting, shows magnificent avenues of flourishing elms. But I must not forget some other elms, beautiful and satisfactory in many places. It is no discredit to our own American elm to say that the English elm is a superb tree in America. It seems to be characteristically British in its sturdy habit, and forms a grand trunk. The juicy inner bark of the red or slippery elm was always acceptable, in lieu of the Pg 144 chewing-gum which...

Description : Excerpt: ...took place in this region very few details were published by the Russian official communiqué. One of these documents, dated April 18, 1915, announced that on March 23, our troops had already begun their principal attack in the direction of Baligrod, enveloping the enemy positions from the west of the Lupkow Pass and on the east near the sources of the San. The enemy opposed the most desperate resistance to the offensive of our troops. They had brought up every available man on the front from the direction of Bartfeld as far as the Uzsok Pass, including even German troops and numerous cavalrymen fighting on foot. The effectives on this front exceeded 300 battalions. Moreover, our troops had to overcome great natural difficulties at every step. In the course of the day, March 23, 1915, we captured more than 4,000 prisoners, a gun, and several dozen machine guns. (p. 260) On March 24, 1915, the battle was in full progress: Especially severe is the fighting for the crest of the mountain south of Jasliska and to the west of the Lupkow Pass. The forests which cover these mountains offer special facilities for the construction of strong fortifications. March 25: The woods in the Lupkow region are a perfect entanglement of barbed wire . surrounded by several layers of trenches, strengthened by deep ditches and palisades. On this day our troops carried by assault a very important Austrian position on the great crest of the Beskid Mountains. The Russian captures for the day amounted to 100 officers, 5,600 men, and a number of machine guns. Advancing from Jasliska the Russians seriously threatened the Austro-German position in the Laborcza Valley, to which strong reenforcements were sent on March 25. With terrific violence the battle raged till far into the night of the 27th, the Russians forcing their way to within seven miles of the Hungarian frontier. In eight days they had taken nearly 10,000 prisoners. By the night of March 28, 1915, the entire...

She sat with her face turned from him for a while; then, perhaps reminded by the blast of wind and snow which at the moment came round the house furiously and beat on the windows, she went on hastily: You wonder to see me here; but I ran away from home; and I can''t bear to go back. Why? Mr. Masters, mother wants me to-Diana hesitated-marry a rich man. The minister was silent. He is there all the while-I mean, very often; he has not spoken out yet, but mother has; and she favours him all she can. You do not? I wish I could never see him again! sighed Diana. The boat stopped at Melun, a pleasant town, twenty-five miles south-east of Paris. Immediately on arriving there, she took passage, with her companions, -- with the exception of Sister Gamier who stopped at Melun,-- in one of the public conveyances, that travelled between Melun and Lyons. The city of Lyons, formerly the second city of France for beauty, commerce and opulence, is situated at the confluence of the Rhone and Soane, two hundred and twenty miles south-east of Paris. Distinguished as it was for its public structures, besides other objects of interest such as are most likely to be found in the most celebrated cities, she spent no longer time in it, than was necessary to recover a little from the exhaustion of her journey, having suffered much from fatigue. She had arrived at that state of religious experience, when she could not indulge the principle of curiosity, innocent as it is generally supposed to be in its action, except in subordination to the claims of religious duty and of God''s glory. 2. From Lyons she took the most direct and expeditious route to Anneci, in Savoy, the residence of Bishop d''Aranthon, with whom she had recently formed an acquaintance at Paris. Speaking of this journey, she says, It was very fatig...

Excerpt: ... not to render the sacrifice offered by Israel as an atonement inefficacious, and to become not an accuser of, but an intercessor for the people (see Eisenmenger, entdeckles Judenthum, ii. p. 155 sq.; Bahr, id. 686). (5) If the subsequently occurring idea of Satan is unjustifiably transferred to Azazel, the notion that he can no longer accuse Israel before God, nor provoke God''s wrath and chastisement against them, would have to be added (see Kurtz, id. p. 359). Besides, the second goat, considered in itself, cannot be regarded as a sacrifice. Both goats are indeed (Lev. xvi. 5) said to be nKBnp, but this only denotes in a general manner the purpose for which the two are together brought forward, while in vers. 9 and 15 the first goat which is slain is specially called nKtsn, but not the second. The latter, on whom the result of the atonement just offered is fulfilled, takes the place of the slain goat, and is, as it were, and as it is often designated, the hircus redivivus. Jewish tradition also recognised this relation between the two goats, by prescribing (Joma, vi. 1) that they should be alike in colour, size, and value. (6) The wilderness being the region of impurity, it was natural that the man who led the goat into the wilderness should be commanded to bathe before returning to the camp. On the burning of the flesh of the sin-offering, see SS 139. As this took place without the camp, the man who performed it had also to cleanse himself before his return. The supereminent sacredness of the day required, as Kurtz, idem, p. 362, justly remarks, that even the barest possibility of Levitical uncleanness being contracted without the camp should be obviated. (7) The circumstance that this day did not bear the name 3n is discussed in SS 144 on the Sacred Seasons. (8) The need ...

Those people who believe that the primary object of all college training is the production of men and women of culture and character can hardly feel elated at the growing tendency in American colleges and universities to encourage students to finish their courses in the shortest possible period of time. There seems to be a strong sentiment among the students of many of our higher institutions of learning that the three or four years of required attendance upon recitations, lectures, and laboratory exercises constitute one of the chief necessary evils of life. The number of those who look upon a course of four full years in a good college as an invaluable privilege which should be utilized in laying the foundations of profound scholarship, broad culture, and sterling character is apparently growing less and less. Turn where you will in this country, and you will find that the college man who is pursuing in his studies a lofty ideal of character rather than looking for a sort of open sesame to material success has become the exception. The practical exigencies of our rushing American civilization, we are told, demand the shortening of the college course. The young men must get out into the world and join the great mob of bread-winners and money-getters, no matter how unsettled and immature their characters, nor how imperfect and superficial their training, nor how deficient they are in the very elements of culture. In fact, our entire educational system, from primary school to university, seems to be generally degenerating into a purely material implement of our material civilization. In the face of such tendencies and conditions, it is no wonder Europeans ridicule our superficiality, our lack of genuine refinement and our low standard of pub...

On the 25th of May, 1839, Gen. Quitman sailed from New York for Liverpool, with the view of negotiating the bonds of the Planters'' Bank and the Mississippi Railroad Company, to accomplish the completion of the road. His compagnon de voyage was the Hon. J. S. B. Thacher, of the Natchez bar. They embarked in the Sheridan, Captain De Peyster, a crack ship of a famous line. She made the run from land to land in thirteen days, but when off Cape Clear encountered a head-wind, which the captain thought would baffle her for eight or ten days. Quitman and his friend got on a hooker alongside, and reached Kinsale at night. A ride of eighteen miles, through a pretty country, brought them to Cork. Here they attended the theatre, and were more entertained by the audience than by the performance. Loud conversation was going on across the house, from one gallery to the other jokes and repartee, while the dress-circle flashed with the bright eyes and jewels of beautiful women. Presently there was a cry, Three cheers for Daniel O''Connell! which were given as only Vol. I.--H Irishmen can give them. After a while, three groans for Sir Robert Pale (Peel). This was the first time our countrymen had heard such a demonstration. The English cheer and the wild hurra of the Germans are...

In carrying into effect the work of redeeming love, the grand instrumentality which God employs is the Christian ministry. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. But how then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach except they be sent? As it is written, How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings? that publisheth peace? that bringeth good tidings of good? that publisheth salvation? that saith unto Zion, Thy God rergneth. . Beloved Brethren: I come before you to-day, to perform a duty of affecting responsibility. By your kind invitation, I am to address you respecting the sacred ministry; a subject dear to us all--a subject which, above all others, has engaged my intense solicitude for more than half...

Not illustrated. Excerpt: ... States, we are struck by the admirable harmony of the gifts of fortune and the efforts of man. That nation possessed two of the main causes of internal peace; it was a new country, but it was inhabited by a people grown old in the exercise of freedom. America had no hostile neighbours to dread; and the American legislators, profiting by these favourable circumstances, created a weak and subordinate executive power, which could without danger be made elective. It then only remained for them to choose the least dangerous of the various modes of election; and the rules which they laid down upon this point admirably correspond to the securities which the physical and political constitution of the country already afforded. Their object was to find the mode of election which would best express the choice of the people with the least possible excitement and suspense. It was admitted in the first place that the simple majority should be decisive ; but the difficulty was to obtain this majority without an interval of delay which it was most important to avoid. It rarely happens that an individual can at once collect the majority of the suffrages of a great people ; and this difficulty is enhanced in a republic of confederate States, where local influences are apt to preponderate. The means by which it was proposed to obviate this second obstacle was to delegate the electoral powers of the nation to a body of representatives. This mode of election rendered a majority more probable ; for the fewer the electors are, the greater is the chance of their coming to a final decision. It also offered an additional probability of a judicious choice. It then remained to be decided whether this right of election was to be entrusted to the legislative body, the habitual representative...

PROLOGUE JOHN AMEND-ALL N a certain afternoon, in the late spring-time, the bell upon Tunstall Moat House was heard ringing at an unaccustomed hourFar and near, in the forest and in the fields along the river, people began to desert their labours and hurry towards the sound; and in Tunstall hamlet a group of poor country-folk stood wondering at the summons. Tunstall hamlet at that period, in the reign of old King Henry VI., wore much the same appearance as it wears to-day. A score or so of houses, heavily framed with oak, stood scattered in a long green valley ascending from the river. At the foot, the road crossed a bridge, and mounting on the other side, disappeared into the fringes of the forest on its way to the Moat House, and farther forth to Holywood Abbey. Half-way up the village, the church stood among yews. On every side the slopes were crowned and the view bounded by the green elms and greening oak-trees of the forest. Hard by the bridge, there was a stone cross upon a knoll, and here the group had collected --half a dozen women and one tall fellow in a russet smock--discussing what the bell betided. An express had gone through the hamlet half an hour before, and drunk a pot of ale in the saddle, not daring to dismount for the hurry of his errand; but he had been ignorant himself of what was forward, and only bore sealed letters from Sir Daniel Brackley to Sir Oliver Oates, the parson, who kept the Moat House in the master''s absence. But now there was the noise of a horse; and soon, out of the edge of the wood and over the echoing bridge, there rode up young Master Richard Shelton, Sir Daniel''s ward. He, at the least, would know, and they hailed him and begged him to explain. He drew bridle willingly enough--a young fellow not yet eighteen, sunbrowned...

Not illustrated. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER II. Analysis of this Exercise of Imagination. SECTION I. The illustrations in the preceding chapter seem to show, that whenever the emotions of Sublimity or Beauty are felt, that exercise of Imagination is produced, which consists in the indulgence of a train of thought; that when this exercise is prevented, these emotions are unfelt or unperceived; and that whatever tends to increase this exercise of mind, tends in the same proportion to increase these emotions. If these illustrations are just, it seems reasonable to conclude, that the effect produced upon the mind, by objects of Sublimity and Beauty, consists in the production of this exercise of .Imagination. Although, however, this conclusion seems to me both just and consonant to experience, yet it is in itself too general, to be considered as a sufficient account of the nature of that operation of mind which takes place in the case of such Emotions. There are many trains of ideas of which we are conscious, which are unattended with any kind of pleasure. There are other operations of mind, in which such trains of thought are necessarily produced, without exciting any similar emotion. Even in the common hours of life, every man is conscious of a continued succession of thoughts passing through his mind, suggested either by the presence of external objects, or arising from the established laws of association : such trains of thought, however, are seldom attended with pleasure, and still seldomer with an emotion, corresponding, in any degree, to the emotions of sublimity or beauty. There are, in like manner, many cases ?where objects excite a train of thought in the mind, without exciting any emotion of pleasure or delight. The prospect of the house, for instance, where one has formerly lived, ex...

This unhappy peculiarity was undoubtedly the effect of preceding events; but it was the immediate cause of the decline of Spain; since, whatever may have been the case in former periods, it is certain that, in modern times the prosperity of nations depends on principles to which the clergy, as a body, are invariably opposed. Under Philip III. they gained an immense accession of strength; and in that very reign they signalized this new epoch of their power by obtaining, with circumstances of horrible barbarity, the expulsion of of the whole Moorish nation. This was an act so atrocious in itself,I22 and so terrible in its consequences, that some writers have ascribed to it alone, the subsequent ruin of Spain; forgetting that other causes, far more potent, were also at work, and that this stupendous crime could never have been perpetrated, except in a country which, being long accustomed to regard heresy as the most heinous of all offences, was ready, at any cost, to purge the land and to free itself from men whose mere presence was regarded as an insult to the Christian faith. m In 1623, Howell writes from Madrid: Such is the reverence they bear to the church here, and ao holy a conceit they have of all ecclesiastics, that the greatest Don in Spain will tremble to offer the meanest of them any outrage or affront. Howell''s Letters, edit. London, 1754, p. 138. The reverence they show to the holy function of the church is wonderful; Princes and Queens will not disdain to kiss a Capuchin''s sleeve, or the surplice of a priest. ... It may be not by twenty parts so long a time as thy own fancy draws it forth for thee; thou art not certain of the next moment. And suppose what thou imaginest: What are twenty or forty years when they are past ? yea, what are a thousand years to vast eternity ? Go trifle away a few days more, sleep out a few nights more, and then lie down in the dust; it will not be long ere the trump of God shall awaken thee, and thine eyes shall behold Jesus coming in the clouds of heaven, and then you will know the price of this sin. Oh, therefore, if there be any sense of eternity upon you, any pity or love for yourselves in you; if you have any concernments more than the beasts that perish, despise not your own offered mercies, slight not the richest gift that ever was yet opened to the world; and a sweeter cannot be opened to all eternity.

Description : This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1867 edition. Excerpt: ... A WORK such as M. Eenan''s '' Histoire Geneale et Systeme Compare des Langues Smitiques'' can only be reviewed chapter by chapter. It contains a survey not only, as its title would lead us to suppose, of the Semitic languages, but of the Semitic languages and nations; and, considering that the whole history of the civilised world has hitherto been acted by two races only, the Semitic and the Aryan, with occasional interruptions produced by the inroads of the Turanian race, M. Eenan''s work comprehends in reality half of the history of the ancient world. We have received as yet the first volume only of this important work, and before the author had time to finish the second, he was called upon to publish a second edition of the first, which appeared in 1858, with important additions and alterations. In writing the history of the Semitic race it is necessary to lay down certain general characteristics 1 ''Histoire GeneYale et SystSSme Compar6 des Langues Sémi-'' tiques.'' Par Ernest Renan, Membre de l''lnstitut. Seconde Edition. Paris, 1858. '' Nouvelles Considerations sur le Caractere General des Peuples Semitiques, et en particulier sur leur Tendance au Monotheisme. Par Ernest Renan. Paris, 1859. common to all the members of that race, before we can speak of nations so widely separated from each other as the Jews, the Babylonians, Phenicians, Carthaginians, and Arabs, as one race or family. The most important bond which binds these scattered tribes together into one ideal whole is to be found in their language. There can be as little doubt that the dialects of all the Semitic nations are derived from one common type as there is about the derivation of French, Spanish, and Italian from Latin, or of Latin, Greek, German, Celtic, Slavonic,...

Description : This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1841 edition. Excerpt: ... Open war is now waged between the Church of Scotland and the courts of civil law in that country;--the civil courts alleging that the Church resists the law, and must be subdued;--the Church proclaiming that her sacred privileges, and the most important rights of the subject, are invaded, and that she suffers wrong, under an unconstitutional usurpation. The parties being at variance respecting the limits of their constitutional authority, it is to be presumed that each feels bound, by a sense of public duty, to maintain its supposed trust, against what it conceives to be the unwarrantable encroachments of the other;--and, since a breach of this nature has no tendency to heal itself, but must, if left to its natural course, hasten rapidly to some ruinous consummation--it is impossible to doubt that the delay of legislative interference has been a great calamity,--which could only be exceeded, were Parliament itself now to precipitate the final catastrophe, by any step of ill-advised or intemperate legislation. During the course of last session, a distinguished nobleman, actuated by the most sincere and laudable intentions, introduced into the Upper House a measure,--which was framed in conformity with the views of a minority in the Church, and was prepared, in strict concert with an honourable and learned gentleman, whose name and respectability have afforded no inconsiderable support to the cause he has espoused,--but whose zeal and warmth, as the accuser of the Church, had not tended, by any means, to prepare him for the delicate task of legislation. The measure, so framed and prepared, was found by the Church, to embody provisions to which she could not accommodate her ecclesiastical procedure, without violating her principles, and...

They that are effectually called do in this life partake of justification, adoption, and sanctification, and the several benefits which, in this life, do either accompany or flow from them. It is a common but very false opinion, that whatever may be the happy result of conversion in a future world, few are the advantages which flow from it in this; and that, so far from benefiting man as to the present, it calls him to all the privations and sacrifices of the most rigid austerity. Such is the picture drawn of it by those who know it not, or who wilfully misrepresent it to defend their hostility to it. Godliness, we are assured on the testimony of God, and of all who have chosen its ways, is profitable to all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come. Those who are effectually called partake here of justification; for to him shall men come, and in the Lord shall all the seed of Israel be justified, and shall glory. They are adopted, for God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and they are sanctified, for Paul having prayed that the very God of peace might sanctify the Christians at Thessalonica wholly, and that their whoJPS spirit, and soul, and body, might be preserved Blameless to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, adds, Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it. When men confer one great favour, it is often considered as barring all future application or hope; but God''s noblest gift is our best security for every Isa. xlv. 25. 1 Cor. i. 9. 1 Thess. v. 23, 84. other blessing.
