And each man was as sad to sever from him there as if they had ever dwelt worthily with that hero. Then with people and with light he was led to his chamber and blithely brought to bed to be at his rest. Whether he slept soundly I dare not say, for he had much to think of on the morrow if he would. Let him lie there; he was near what he sought. If ye will be still a while I shall tell you how they fared. FYTTE THE FOURTH 1. Now nighs the New Year, and the night passes. The day drives on to the dark, as God bids; but outside wild storms wakened in the world; clouds cast the cold keenly to the earth; with discomfort enough to the naked, the snow from the north flew sharply, and nipped the game. The blustering wind blew from the heights, and drove each dale full of great drifts. The man who lay in his bed heard it right well; though he locks bis lids, full little he sleeps. By each cock that crew he knew well the hour. Promptly he leaped up ere the day sprang, for there was the light of a lamp that gleamed in his chamber. He called to his chamberlain, who quickly answered him, and bade him bring his burnie and saddle his horse. The chamberlain gets up and fetches him his weeds, and arrays Sir Gawain in proper fashion. First he dressed him in his clothes to keep out the cold, and then he put on the rest of his harness, that had been well kept, both mail and plate, and brightly polished. The rings of his rich burnie had been rocked from the rust,1 and all was fresh as at first; and Gawain was i That U, ln a barrel of sand. fain to give thanks for it. The attendant had wiped each piece well and often. Then the noblest man ...

Mr. Fairholt, in his Costume in England, p. 327, gives us a woodcut from a print of 1680 A.d., which admirably illustrates the ordinary out-door dress of a clergyman of the time of William and Mary. CHAPTER V. PARSONAGE HOUSES. HEN, in our endeavour to realise the life of these secular clergymen of the Middle Ages, we come to inquire, What sort of houses did they live in? how were these furnished? what sort of life did their occupants lead? what kind of men were they? it is curious how little seems to be generally known on the subject, compared with what we know about the houses and life and character of the regular orders. Instead of gathering together what others have said, we find ourselves engaged in an original investigation of a new and obscure subject. The case of the cathedral and collegiate clergy, and that of the isolated parochial clergy, form two distinct branches of the subject. The limited space at our disposal will not permit us to do justice to both; the latter branch of the subject is less known, and perhaps the more generally interesting, and we shall therefore devote the bulk of our space to it. We will only premise a few words on the former branch. The bishop of a cathedral of secular canons had his house near his cathedral, in which he maintained a household equal in numbers and expense to that of the secular barons among whom he took rank; the chief difference being, that the spiritual lord''s family consisted rather of chaplains and clerks than of squires and men-at-arms. The bishop''s palace at Wells is a very interesting example in an unusually perfect condition. Britton gives an engr...

Tabes and syringomyelia are to be excluded by a careful consideration of the history and of the absence of the characteristic signs and symptoms of these conditions. Prognosis.--Cure does not occur in chronic arthritis deformans, the tendency of the disease being toward slow but sometimes intermittent progression. By suitable medication, bathing, baking, and the use of a protecting and supporting apparatus, the progress of the disease may be delayed and the patient made more comfortable. COXA VARA By the name coxa vara we designate a condition in which, from one cause or another, the angle between the neck and the shaft of the femur is changed, so that instead of being from 120 to 140 roughly, as is normal, it is diminished to a right angle, or even less, and as a consequence there are produced more or less marked disturbances of function in the hip-joint, limitation of motion, pain, and other symptoms. The condition may arise in a number of ways, from injury, from rachitis, and in the course of a number of diseases of the hip-joint, tuberculosis, arthritis deformans, osteomyelitis of the femur, etc. In the conditions associated with destructive diseases of the hip-joint, such as tuberculosis, osteomyelitis, and arthritis deformans, the mere presence of coxa vara forms only an unimportant part of the lesion, and as such may give rise to symptoms ''which are completely overshadowed by the more serious manifestations of the destructive disease. As a pathological entity the traumatic cases are much the most important. The rachitic cases also are of interest. Symptoms.--The patient complains of a sense of weakness in the hip-joint, develops a limp, and finds that after exercise or fatigue the joint becomes distinctly pain...

Unfortunately The application by the whites of foreign names to Indian tribes is very frequent in America. t We may remark further that interchanges of 6 and v were common with the early Spanish writers, and that Fray Marcos de Nizza was a Piedmontese, who, writing in the Italian style, wrote Ci for the English Chi; thus the similarity between Shiuano and Chivola becomes greater, and the difference limits itself to such a confusion of sounds and such exchanges of letters arising from it as are often and strikingly exemplified in the Indian names of places in New Mexico; for example, in the Tehua language, Ta-ui into Taos; in the Queres, Pa-go or Pa-yo-qo-na into Pecos, Bamish into Jemez, Qo-tyi-ti into Coclriti; the Tigua word Tttth-la-nay into Tutahaco, Saray into Xalay, Na-si-ap into Napeya; the Zuni names Mu-gua into Moqui, Haeuqua into Acuco. It is therefore not unreasonable to suppose that the name Cibola, as the Italian monk heard and pronounced it, was strikingly similar to the word in the Zuni language that denotes the Zuni country; therefore this first linguistic clue suggests that the seven cities of Cibola may be sought in the region of Zuni. the single report which Fray Marcos, the only scribe in his party, wrote is unsatisfactory, or deficient in geographical data. No conclusions can be drawn from it in respect to the character of the country or to the number of rivers, the volume of water in them or their course. Equally indefinite are his statements, concerning the inhabitants. The zealous Franciscan seems to have been animated by only one thought--that of finding the seven cities of Cibola. The farther he advanced, the more he heard of them, and the...

Not illustrated. 1896 Excerpt: ...= Udt. within the vortex, and = 0 outside, we have in each case equal to a constant. The triple integral, integrated by parts, gives Pff 4-V where a relation which expresses the way in which the energy of unit volume of the liquid varies in the different parts of the field due to the vortex; or it states that this energy is the same throughout the field, when the terms Va and VT are included as parts of the potential energy. Application of (1) will show that this expression makes not only p, but P,-P-, continuous at the vortex surface, the discontinuities ax ay dz due to first differential coefficients of Fand (u'' + v''+w'') cancelling. The result might be obtained therefore by forming directly from the hydrodynamical equations; this would give the volume integral, and the surface integral would then be inferred from the discontinuities just mentioned. The form given to L + F shows at once that but it is evident that the volume potentials alone do not form a solenoidal system, unless li + mi + nt = 0 at the surface. In this case the surface potentials are also solenoidal, and their use may be replaced by that of a single function O within the vortex, O'' without the vortex. The parts of /, g, h due to the surface potentials are given by J dx'' J dx'' and we have VKl = 0 within the vortex, and V''fi'' = 0 without the vortex. It is then convenient to transform (3), multiplying in turn by (Imn), (I''m''n), (lmn), a mutually orthogonal system, in which (Imn) is the direction of the normal. The result is for a direction of ds in the surface at right angles to the molecular rotation, and vanishes for all directions at right angles to this. In the special case of motion in meridian planes through an axis z, if T =--fccr, tor being the distan...

You now therefore perceive, that I have some intentions of leaving this country; and yet my designed departure fills me with reluctance and regret. Though the friendships of travellers are generally more transient than vernal snows, still I feel an uneasiness at breaking the connections I have formed since my arrival; particularly I shall have no small pain in leaving my usual companion, guide, and instructor. I shall wait for the arrival of my son before I set out. He shall be my companion in every intended journey for the future: in his company I can support the fatigues of the way with redoubled ardour, pleased at once with conveying instruction, and exacting obedience. Adieu. From Lien Clii Altangi to Fum Hoam. After a variety of disappointments, my wishes are at length fully satisfied. My son, so long expected, is arrived, at once by his presence banishing my anxiety, and opening a new scene of unexpected pleasure. His improvements in mind and person have far surpassed even the sanguine expectations of a father. I left him a boy, but he is returned a man; pleasing in his person, hardened by travel, and polished by adversity. His disappointment in love, however, had1 infused an air of melancholy into his conversation, which seemed at intervals to interrupt our mutual satisfaction. I expected that this coukl find a cure only from time; but fortune, as if willing to load us with her favours, has, in a moment, repaid every uneasiness with rapture. Two days after his arrival, the man in black with his beautiful niece came to congratulate us upon this occasion: but guess our surprise, when nay friend''s lovely kinswoma...

I have also given it, but more rarely, in doses of a drachm, also combined with rhubarb, and without any ill consequences. Many of the patients to whom I have administered it were labouring under mild diarrhoea. In all cases it has appeared to me to act as a mild and safe purgative; and this, until recently, has been the general property ascribed to it by medical writers. In 1839, Wibmer1 stated that, in doses of from half a scruple to a drachm, it operates as a resolvent, and promotes secretion from the alimentary canal; in doses of from two to six drachms, it acts as a purgative, and likewise as a diuretic, promoting all the secretions and excretions, but having a less cool ing and more of a stimulating operation than other neutral salts. In larger doses, he adds, it produces abdominal pain, violent diarrhoea, and even inflammation of the stomach and bowels. More recently,1 attention has been drawn to its poisonous and, in several instances, fatal effects. In one case two ounces, in another about ten drachms in six doses, and in a third 600 grs. in three doses, are stated to have proved fatal. Death is even said to have occurred after, though perhaps not in consequence of, a dose of about thirty grains. Violent, but not fatal, effects have also been observed in other cases. In all the three fatal cases above referred to, the patients were females: in one, the sulphate was given to produce abortion; in another, as a laxative after parturition; in the third, to stop the secretion of milk. The symptoms resembled cholera: abdominal pain, vomiting, purging, cramps of the extremities, and great exhaustion. In the second case above referred to, death occurred tw...

The land is raising abundant crops, where formerly it was practically useless. Northeast of Taylorville 16 districts have been organized for draining the upland area. The combined area of these districts is 24,475 acres. The largest contains 4,040 acres and most of them between 1,000 and 1,500 acres. Several of them are mutual districts and all were organized under the Farm Drainage Act. A new district, Buckhart No. 3, is now being formed and contains 1,400 acres. At the upper end of Flat Branch in Shelby County, 15,300 acres were organized into Flat Branch District No. 2. All that was done here was a small amount of dredging along Flat Branch, which gave very little benefit to the land. It was reported that this area was organized to prevent the organization of one or more ...

Reader, what would you have done? Is there any harm in finding a lost treasure, and in using it, if the owners, and all who could partake of their original rights, are dead?--Certainly not. The thing is done every day; and there is not an estate in Britain that has not, in this way, at some time, been lost and found: no, nor a jewel, nor an ounce of gold and silver, that is not the result of some chance discovery; for nature, we know, was the first proprietor. So we may begin and help ourselves, may we not? We looked to Prout, whose eyes had been riveted on a chest before him. He gave a nod, leaped from the ground with a sudden impulse, and, striking his thighs with his hands, he said, ''Come on, we may be gentlemen now, if we like. What''s the noise? only the echo again. O, give it a good call--let us all shout at once, and, if the owners are within hearing, let them speak now, or for ever after hold their peace!'' Prout uttered a wild '' hurrah!'' in which we all joined with a voice that had much of a yell in it at last, which was continued as long and as loudly as our utmost powers of lungs would permit, as if to postpone or drown the response we dreaded from the vaults beyond. Echo waited not until we had fairly done, but returned us our own with every variety of tone and cadence, ending in a strange whooping cachinnation that rang like the laugh of demons through the vault. It seemed, indeed, as if the spirits from beneath were roused; and I know that our young scalps bristled Up, our mouths s...

The horns sound their harmonic scale up and down from top to bottom in close imitation for 120 bars; an impossible feat. No player can take both high and low notes in succession on this instrument with certainty; it is generally the custom, therefore, to give all high notes to the 1 horn only,-and lowest notes to the 2n-d. Beethoven was one of the most exacting, but effective writers for the horn. Schumann simply seems to have understood nothing whatever about it. His Concertstuck in G, for Piano and orchestra, contains a very trying and unsatisfactory horn part. The student should be chary in accepting the opinions of orchestral players on the subject of horn-writing. I never knew these gentlemen to admit that any new composer understood their instrument. In that they are like singers. The simple fact is, that no new or unusual passage can be otherwise than difficult at first. The Trumpet. (Fr. Trompette: Ger. Trompete-n: Ital. Tromba-e; CIarino,-i;) I desire here to record my emphatic opinion that the Trumpet in the orchestra is an almost unmitigated nuisance. In the small orchestra of Haydn and Mozart it obliterates everything else, and dare only be used here and there in the padding; in the modern orchestra it is useless because of its limited scale, while in the music of Bach and Handel it is a source of constant vexation of spirit. It is essentially an instrument somewhat like the horn, save for the fact that the bell is less exuberant and the mouth-piece hemispherical, the latter feature being supposed to The remarks on the Hand-horn apply also to the trumpet. The student need only listen to a performance of Beethoven''s 8 Symphony, to have the deplorable limitation of the natural trumpet brought vivi...

The picked professionals who played against him in Gentlemen and Players matches at Lord''s and the Oval as a rule displayed all the feebleness that was possible. Daft, Lockwood, and Oscroft were exceptions to this. Lockwood, who had a wonderful cut, more than any other, realised the danger of hitting at the pitch of Mr. Buchanan''s off ball. Instead of doing this, he got back and cut the ball behind the wicket for three runs--it might have been four, but Lockwood was a slow runner. Mr. Buchanan did not like to have a third man, and his nervous system was seriously insulted at Lockwood''s method, which forced him to change the disposition of his field in a way he did not like. Mr. Grace and Mr. Buchanan were two amateur slow bowlers who really studied the art of bowling, and both of them, Mr. Grace in particular, studied the play of their batting opponents; but when you have mentioned Messrs. Appleby, Grace, and Buchanan, and for a short time Mr. Steel, you have nearly exhausted the list of bowlers who during the last thirty years may be said to have challenged comparison with the best professionals. In batting it is very different. Mr. Grace, of course, must be left out of any calculation. Apart from him, however, the amateurs can quite hold their own in batting. It is not fair to take as an illustration the performances of each in Gentlemen v. Players matches, because the bowling on one side is so superior to the other. But in international test matches, both here and in Australia, Messrs. Stoddart, Ranjitsinhji, Maclaren, Jackson, and Steel have been fully as good and successful as Shrewsbury, Barnes, Gunn, Hayward, and Tyldesley. As far as style ...

The bright green of the fields, the reddish brown or dull green of the great river, and the tender tints of the bare yellow rocks, beneath the deep blue sky, always form a beautiful view. In form the land-cape varies little and is not remarkable; in color its qualities are always splendid, and under the general uniformity show continual variety.--Climate. The climate of E., being remarkably equable, is healthy to those who can!ear great heat, and who avoid the unwholesome tract., of the country, such as the northern coast, where there are extensive salt marshes. Upper E. is healthier than Lower E. The le utt healthy time of the year is the latter part of autumn, when the inundated soil is drying. In the desert, at a very short distance from the cultivable land, the climate is uniformly dry and unvaryingly healthy. E.t however, is unsuitable as a permanent residence to Europeans who do not greatly modify their mode of life, and it is almost Impassible to rear European children there; but if they arrive after the age of ten or a little more they do not usually feel its ill effects. As a resort for invalids E. cannot be recommended without caution. Persons suffering from asthma and bronchitis are likely to gain benefit from a Nile-voyage, unless the season Is unusually cold. The climate of the desert does not in all cases suit them, the small particles of sand which are inhaled increasing the irritation. The desert air is undoubtedly good for consumption, and a wise plan is to encamp near Cairo, or still better to find some kind of house within the limits of the desert; and there are ancient sepulchral grottos at Thebes and other sites which afford excellent quarters for any one who w...

Question. By disguised men. Answer. I suppose so. Question. How many were so treated? Answer. Seven negroes. Question. Can you think of any other instance? Answer. The Atlanta Sun of the 16th of last February, in commenting upon Bullock''s proclamation, denounced these outrages in as strong terms as that. Question. Did it denonnce any particular party or parties, or give the uames of the alleged perpetrators of the outrages? Answer. No, sir; it merely commented upon the proclamation. Question. Did it denounce the proclamation in the same article? Answer. It did not. Question. It approved the proclamation, did it? Answer. I do not recollect exactly, but I think it approved it. Question. And did the article in the Chronicle and Sentinel contain a denunciation by uame of the alleged perpetrators? Answer. No, sir; becanse there were none named. Question. PETER, BY MEANS OF HIS BLESSED MASTER, PERFORMS A MIRACLE IN WALKING TOON THE SEA.--OUR LORD''S IMPROVEMENT OF THE MIRACLES WROUGHT IN THE WILDERNESS, INTRODUCED IN A DISCOURSE DELIVERED IN THE SYNAGOGUE OF CAPERNAUM. The disciples were so alarmed at the cruel fate of the Baptist, whose memory they highly revered, that they returned from their mission, and assisted in performing the last offices to the body of their old master, many of the apostles having been originally disciples of John. As soon as these pious rites were over, they repaired to Jesus, and told him all that had happened. Their compassionate Master, on hearing this melancholy news, retired with them by sea, into a desert place, belonging to Bethsaida, that by retirement, meditation, and prayer, they might be BJU life nf mir refreshed and recruited for their spiritual labours; and, at the same time, leave an example to us, that we should often retire from the noise and hurry of the world, and offered up the most fervent prayers to our heavenly Father. But the multitude attended so closely, that their departure was not long concealed; and great numbers of people repaired to the place where they supposed Jesus and his disciples had secluded themselves. Struck with the greatness of his miracles on those that were sick, and anxious to hear more instructions from the mouth of so divine a teacher, no difficulties were too great for them to surmount, nor any place too retired for them to penetrate, in search of their admired preacher. Nor was the beneficent Saviour of the world regardless of their pious esteem. He saw them, he was moved with c...

It was formerly the rule, that all dissonances should be prepared. At the present day it is the custom to prepare only harsh dissonances. The chord of the Dominant seventh was the first to be freed from the restriction, and the chord of the Diminished seventh is also free, while the Secondary Chords of the Seventh, and the Chord of the Ninth ( par Though not requiring preparation, it is well to approach the milder dissonances by a Diatonic step rather than by a skip. ticularly the Minor Ninth, because it is a harsh dissonance), are usually prepared. Preparing a dissonance means, that the note which causes the dissonance shall have been present as a consonance in the chord immediately preceding; e. g., n II The note C, having appeared in the first chord as a consonant note, is thus prepared in the second chord where it is a dissonant note. 182. Instead of being prepared, all dissonant notes may enter diatonically; i. e., from the next step above or below. E. g., (The dissonant note C enters from the next step above.) The Meridian Photometer was then returned to Cambridge and mounted in the west balcony of the Main Building, in the same position as that it occupied during the years 1892 to 1898, when the observations given in Volumes XLIV and XLV were made. Observations were undertaken by Professor Bailey in July, 1900. The sky has been divided into forty-eight regions of equal area and each about 30 square, for the discussion of the distribution of stars, in Volumes XIV and XXIII. Each of these regions has been again divided into nine equal parts, each approximately 10 square, and one star of about the fifth magnitude has been selected from each of these regions. Care was also taken so far as possible to select stars whose spectra were of the first type. An attempt was made to observe each of these stars on ten nights, with the object of furnishing a series of standards at approximately equal distances apart. These stars were to bë observed with the greatest care, to furnish as accurate standards of magnitude as possible. Eight settings instead of four were made on each night, the work being done as deliberately as accuracy required, and observations were abandoned on nights on which the presence of clouds, likely to affect the measures, were suspected. The errors which remain may therefore be regarded as unavoidable. All of the stars were compared with X Ursae Minoris, which was also measured at the beginning and end of each series. As in previous work at Cambridge, the constant for each series was made to depend on several of the one hundred circumpolar stars which have been employed as standards here since 1879. In general, five of these stars were observed in each series, two obs...

That it was used only as a means to an end is plainly shown by the fact that it was considered as a duty, to the fulfilment of which people could be brought by force, through the menaces of secular or ecclesiastical power; as a duty which ceases when deception is useful; as a duty from which grown-up persons feel free towards children, and the learned towards the unlearned. We know how at last it came to this, that the majority of those who discovered the systematic fraud determined to imitate it, and unhesitatingly to profess that which appeared to them to be foolish and contrary to reason, and, if necessary, to affirm it by oath. But there were some who found it impossible to follow such a course. They did not deny that it may often be useful to minors to be deceived; but they could not help asking themselves whether it be good for minors to remain in their infancy, whether it be good for them to be kept in their ignorance, through special arrangements for that purpose; and especially if this be the case when this ignorance concerns no one and nothing but their own and innermost selves. They convinced themselves that by deceiving others they deceived themselves, that veracity is not a means to false ends; that the love of truth, that the harmony of man with himself, requires no outward stay; but that, on the contrary, it is one of those foundations of life on which the whole life of phenomena rests. They regained the consciousness of their true selves; they made a vow to break with the old hypocrisy, and remained true to their vow. However steep and full of dangers its narrow path became; however much they were flattered or threatened with being brought back to the broad and easy road, they remained faithful to the truth and to their ...

We have seen a letter from me old general, in which he says that for twenty years, he has not drawn a draft upon any person whatever; that he is in no way responsible to the amount of a dollar for any person or persons, except for the purchase of two or three slaves by his adopted son; and that all the rumors in relation to his drafts, his endorsements, and his losses, are entirely false and without the shadow of foundation in truth. But the text calls us to a glorious truth. It calls us to consider what the Triune God has done for the bringing near of his lost creatures to himself. It is to God the Father''s grace and love that the great plan of providing a salvation for lost sinners is more especially ascribed in Holy Scripture. The Father sent the Son to be the Gen. iii. 24. Saviour of the world.-- God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son. And again, According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord. Before the foundations of the world were laid he is described as having formed the glorious counsel of bringing near unto himself, in the course of successive ages, those whom he had chosen in Christ Jesus out of mankind. Moved with inconceivable tenderness and love for creatures altogether vile, he resolved, in the riches of his grace, to provide such means as should bring them from a state of hopeless enmity and alienation into a state of near and dear connexion with himself. And this he resolved to do in such a way as should be consistent with his own unchangeable attributes of holiness and justice, and with the honour of his holy law. He resolved, in short, to punish the sin in the same act whereby he saved the sinner, and so to deliver his people from the curse which they had drawn upon their heads, as that that curse might not however fall empty to the ground. Some victim therefore must be found--some substitute provided--some one of such transcendent worth that his tempora...

It seemed as if, apart from his care for the individual, he had, poor fellow, a pleasure in having somebody to care for. It was only when I spoke of Elfie, when I tried to bring the talk round to their own affairs, that all this changed, and he grew moody, reserved, one might almost say sullen. By-and-by, after restlessly pacing the room for some time, breaking silence at intervals, and in answer to my questions or remarks, but evidently with the effort caused by preoccupation; by-and-by he opened each of the different doors, to look down the passages outside them (one of these doors which might, without the knowledge of those in the room, have admitted a listener, he locked as he reclosed it); then he came and seated himself in a low chair, very close to me, from which he could address himself to my better-hearing ear, and began to speak. Speaking, at first, with no heat or passion, but as a man in an evil dream might speak out some of the evil things of his dream--things that, for him, were so familiar as to have lost all suspicion of extravagance and to have passed beyond any region in which doubt and question were any longer possible. You will hardly be surprised to hear, was his curiously formal manner of commencement--and the notion occurred to me that he might be about to speak much what he had made up his mind to write, had he not seen me-- that, having been now more than one year married, I believe myself to have no love for my wife left; no love and no tenderness, still more emphatically, no respect. She is cold, and cruel, and false. She has let herself become little more than a puppet in the hands of a man who...

The writer has witnessed a 550 degree test oil, passed through a cylinder in steam superheated to 1,000 degrees, and from the water of condensation recovered in its original condition. This test was in the laboratory, but it demonstrated that when protected by the steam the oil stood an excessive temperature, and that phenomena of flashing, does not, and cannot occur while the oil is in the steam. The function of a lubricant, is to keep the rubbing surfaces apart; the determining quality of a lubricant is its ability to satisfactorily perform that function. The essential quality required is that of distribution over the surfaces to be lubricated. The best service from a valve or cylinder oil requires that it enter the steam chest thoroughly atomized, each drop being divided into thousands of minute drops, or atoms, as it reaches the rubbing surfaces. This is accomplished by a combination process of emulsification, vaporization, and atomization, and it follows that a first class cylinder oil must possess the qualities to readily emulsify and atomize, with a sufficient degree of vaporization to spread itself over the surfaces with the steam. In other words, to lubricate the steam. Uniformity ot distribution is as important as uniformity and continuity of supply. These are principles that apply to valve and cylinder lubrication, irrespective of type, of valve or temperature of steam. The design of valve, and method of introducing the oil, are very important factors. It has been practically demonstrated that a flat or slide valve cannot be successfully used with very high temperature steam because of the heat warping the valve, presenting an uneven surface to the seat. Reference to this type of valve pertains to its use with saturated steam. With ...

The little girl was a favourite with her schoolfellows, as well as with mistresses and masters. She was happy and contented at school, and to her the holidays were periods of more than happiness and content--it was perfect bliss that she enjoyed then. She continued always to regard Mr. Burke--her own Mr. Burke, as in her grateful heart she still called him--as the greatest and best of men, while Rose she loved with scarcely less enthusiasm. She was Rose''s delighted slave during the holidays, doing with alacrity everything she liked, and giving up her own will without being aware that she did so, because she had more pleasure in following Rose''s wishes than her own. Rose loved Aileen also, but it never occurred to her to give way to her, or that it was not perfectly natural that what she liked should always be done, and that Aileen should like it also more than anything else. Rose was not aware that she was selfish. A great many children are unconsciously selfish, but they are not the less selfish because they are not conscious of it. Rose was very good-natured, and had a sunshiny sweetness about her that liked every one to be pleased; but Aileen always appeared happy, whatever happened, and that was enough for Rose, who often begged Uncle Archie to give Aileen somethiug she wanted--though she would not ask him for gifts for herself--and would keep treats for the holidays, that Aileen might enjoy them along with her. So it never occurred to her that Aileen might have particular wishes of her own, or that she ordered her about with good-natured imperiousness, and was first in everything. When Rose was about nine years o...

Mr. William Smith of Newcastle, says also, he thinks the pamphlet will have considerable influence in bringing about that reform, which is now become highly necessary. These iastances of approbation in the friends, that I highly highly value and esteem, act in some degree a a counterballance to the reproaches I have met; and what adds to my comfort is, that our congregations have been numerous of late, and that instead of being decreased as my enemies had foretold, they on the contrary, have constantly increased since the publication of this pamphlet. On Monday morning, I received a letter from Mr. Pawfon, informing me of what they had done in London, respecting my pamphlets; it appears by this that the leading preachers are determined to expel me from the connexion, in consequence of the pamphlet I have written. I answered his letter the next day, and endeavoured to shew the unreasonableness of their conduct: I recommended my cause to God, hoping he would stand by and desend me till my pilgrimage was ended. On TuesUay night I had a singular dream: I thought I was passing orer a large barren moor, and that when I came to the other side, a person was standing against a wall, and smiled at me when I came to him, and said, do you know what these men are doing, pointing at the same time to some men that were digging a pit near the place where he stood. He then said with great chearfulnef?, the pit they are digging is to confine confine you in as a prisoner, but be assured these workmen will never be able to accomplish their end, and you need not have the least se...

But we will see enough of the front soon, if I do not miss my guess. The pontoons are all loaded, ready to move at a moment''s notice, and we will go with them. Saturday, May 7.--Quite a difficulty occurred to-day on the river bank, between some white and negro soldiers. The whites began the row, but the colored troops came out first best. Hugh Shaw, of our Regiment, seems to have been the leader, and there were several others of the Regiment engaged in the fracas. Shaw was badly handled and lost his gun. Six companies of the i4th United States Colored Infantry appeared on the ground to maintain order. In the meantime, the offending fools had been arrested and were put on fatigue duty. The day is gone, forever gone, when colored soldiers in the United States Army can be insulted with impunity. Sunday, May 8.--Attended morning services at the Post Chapel. Rev. Mr. Kincade, of the Christian Commission, preached a good sermon, thirty minutes long, on Naaman. There was a man in the congregation who responded too often, too loud, and in the wrong place. Responding is a good thing, but can be overdone, and wrongly done. He said Amen to the triumph of the devil. He had entirely too much steam for the amount of brains he possessed. I preached in our Regiment at two p. m. to a large and attentive congregation. There is an evident increase in spirituality in the Regiment. This must be in answer to the prayers of the people at home. At 6:30 p. m., Monday, May i0th, we met in front of our Regiment and perfected the organization of a Regimental Christian Association. Following is the constitution: CONS...

Judge Irving presided alone for thirteen years, during which period very eminent and learned members of the bar appeared before him in cases tried in the court. Irving continued to preside as first judge until his death, serving in all, seventeen years. He was a man who was honored and respected by the profession as a whole; he was a lover of justice, and withal, a good business man, having a weakness for letters, like his famous brother, Washington Irving. Upon his death, the bar erected a handsome marble tablet in the courtroom, to his memory. COURT OF SESSIONS. In 1800, the terms of the Court of Sessions were directed to be held six times a year, and in 1813. once a month. In 1850, a city judge was created, with the same powers as the recorder. In 1847, the power of the aldermen to sit in the Court of Common Pleas was taken away; in 1853, they were also deprived of their right to sit in the Court of Sessions. APPELLATE JURISDICTION. Under the old laws, any cause might be removed from the Mayor''s Court to the Supreme Court, where the amount involved exceeded twenty pounds, but in 1789, an act was passed forbidding the removal, except in certain cases, unless the amount exceeded one hundred pounds, or two hundred and fifty dollars. In 1823, the amount was doubled. In 1837, it was further increased to twenty-five hundred dollars and in 1844 the power to remove any cause was taken away, and the jurisdiction of the court remained thereafter unlimited as to amounts. Those of the Bank of Italy, placed by the inspectors at the sum of 449,420,000 lire, rose to 519,665,000 through a new audit made by agreement between the minister of the treasury and the bank, by putting in order the account current of the crddit foncier as to expenses, purchases of credits, and improvements on real estate. At the end of 1900 the operations remaining to be liquidated amounted to 245,000,000 lire; therefore 274,400,000 lire were already liquidated, composed of 56,700,000 lire in payments on bills of exchange, 96,300,000 lire in payments on various credits, 36,000,000 lire in transfers of securities not admitted by law into others admitted by law, and 19,300,000 lire in sales of real estate, making in all 209,000,000 lire. To complete the sum of 274,400,000 lire payment of 30,000,000 lire was arranged for, to be made by the shareholders in conformity to the agreement of 1894; 30,000,000 lire was deducted from the capital established by the agreement of 1896, and 5,300,000 lire were raised on a loan stipulated with the Istituto Italiano di Credito Fondiario. It was then remarked that the effective liquidation was represented by 172,000,000 lire collected in payment of bills of exchange and credits for a total of 153,000,000 lire, and of only 19,300,000 lire collected for the sale of real estate; it was said that this result was attained with comparative ease, because the bank had been able to liquidate the part of its assets that was easiest to realize on. For many years after the founding of Plymouth, the mowing lands were assigned by lot in town meeting. In the town of Sandwich, in Plymouth colony, townsmen were given liberty, in 167S, to improve land in the Town Neck noe longer than ten yeares--then to be at the townsmen''s ordering againe. The Town Neck of 130 acres still remains a common field under the control of a small company of proprietors, who are descendants of the first settlers, or who have purchased cow rights. In Salem also there is a remarkable case of survival in the so-called Great Pastures, which are still managed upon the principles of an old English common field. All-these examples, together with Boston Common and the village greens throughout New England are bits of fossil history, which serve to link the communal life of to-day with the earliest beginnings of Teutonic society. Town commons, town pastures, and other monuments of the old Germanic village community, once existed in Maryland and in other parts of the South. The Northern and the Southern States have a common inheritance of old Saxon institutions of local self-government. The South had its hundreds, its towns, and boroughs, which were once filled with the same communal spirit as the towns and parishes of New England. But the great extent of country in the South, the ease with which colonists acquired landed estates, the example of the English country gentry, together with the influence of slaver-, climate, and extensive farming, led to a decay of municipal institutions and to the triumph of a rural civilization, which in Virginia and elsewhere was of an extremely high ord...

Duchess Of Cambridge's Wedding Dressmaker Reveals How She Kept Gown A Secret
Posted on Thursday November 23, 2017

Even though it's been six years since Kate Middleton wed Prince William, we still think the Duchess of Cambridge's wedding dress is one of the most beautiful gowns we've ever seen.

And we're not the only ones who can't stop gushing about it.

One of the dressmakers who worked on the duchess' Alexander McQueen wedding dress recently opened up about what it was like to make the iconic gown, as well as how she and her team kept it a secret from the public.

Kate Middleton arrives to Westminster Abbey for her marriage to Prince William in London April 29, 2011.

Talking about her time making the gown following a recent visit by Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, to the Royal School of Needlework, dressmaker Mandy Ewing said the experience was a "once in a lifetime opportunity," reports Hello.

"We knew who [the wedding dress] was for, but it was very secret — we had net curtains up and cleaners were not allowed into the room and the code on the door was changed," she said. "The dress was all in the news, but nobody knew who was doing it. When you're working you just focus on it and try not think about what's in the news. But it was an exciting event and everybody loved working on it — it was a once in a lifetime opportunity."

As royal watchers know, Kate's wedding dress, as well as her shoes and veil, were designed by Sarah Burton for the U.K. label, and featured intricate lace that was crafted at the Royal School of Needlework based at Hampton Court Palace and a veil that was made with hand-embroidered flowers. According to Hello, the duchess' train was an estimated 8.85 feet long, and the back of the dress was held together by 58 organza-covered buttons and Rouleau loops.

Kate Middleton waves as she arrives at the West Door of Westminster Abbey in London for her wedding to Prince William, on April 29, 2011.

The main body of the dress was made in ivory and white satin gazar, using U.K. fabrics that had been sourced by Burton, with a full skirt that was designed to look like an opening flower. The "something blue" tradition was a blue ribbon that was sewn inside the dress, while the "something old" was the 19th-century technique called Carrickmacross which was used to place images of roses, thistles, daffodils, and shamrocks on the bodice and skirt.

Burton previously discussed what it was like creating the special royal gown, telling New York Times Style magazine, "I had no idea it would be as big as it was. Only the night before, seeing all the photographers outside the abbey, did I think, 'Oh, my God. This is massive.'"

"I loved making the dress, I loved adapting my ideas to suit the person and the occasion, and we put our hearts into it. I respect the intimate nature of that lovely project and I respect the friendships that were forged during it... an instinctive, intelligent, imaginative young woman's wish for a beautiful wedding dress — or any kind of dress — is the most natural thing in the world."

The wedding dress of Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, is pictured at Buckingham Palace on July 20, 2011.

Burton also created a second "wedding" dress for Kate to change into after the ceremony: a simple ivory and satin dress that featured a sweetheart neckline, circle skirt, and diamante belt, topped off with a white angora bolero over her shoulders.

After the wedding, the Alexander McQueen gown went on public display at Buckingham Palace so fans could see its beauty up close.

Victoria's Secret Appropriates Indigenous Culture, Yet Again, In Fashion Show
Posted on Wednesday November 22, 2017

If you've been confused about when it's appropriate to wear an Indigenous-inspired feathered headdress as a fashion statement and you're not, in fact, Indigenous, allow us to finally put the matter to rest: never.

Now, if someone could please pass that message along to Victoria's Secret.

The lingerie giant served up some cultural appropriation once again at the 2017 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in Shanghai on Monday. One of the show's segments, called "Nomadic Adventures," featured the models walking the runway in Indigenous-inspired headdresses and accessories, and what appeared to be Maasai tribal necklaces. Nadine Leopold walks the runway at the 2017 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in Sanghai, China, on Nov. 20

In one instance, model Nadine Leopold wore a feathery headpiece resembling the traditional war bonnet, which is a symbol of respect and bravery in many Indigenous cultures, according to Fashionista. Other looks, such as that worn by model Taylor Hill, incorporated "Navajo-style" beading, weaving styles, turquoise jewelery, and feathers, according to Design Taxi.

And necklaces and robes that seemed to be inspired by the Maasai tribe of Southern Kenya and Northern Tanzania were worn by several models, in particular brown and black models, noted Revelist.

"Victoria's Secret either went for a 'tribal' look without caring what 'tribe' they were referencing, or they deliberately took these elements and stripped them of their cultural meaning. Either way, it's bad," the online magazine said.

Victoria's Secret has an embarrassing history of cultural appropriation at its yearly runway shows. The 2010 "Wild Things" segment (which featured more models of colour than in other parts of the show) relied heavily on animal prints and tattoos.

In 2012, Victoria's Secret apologized for using an Indigenous headdress in its famous fashion show, and pulled all traces of the appropriation from the broadcast version. But that didn't stop the brand from pulling from Mexican and Chinese cultures in its 2016 show.

The problem extends to the fashion industry in general, where designer Stella McCartney was accused of cultural appropriation this year for using Ankara prints in her spring collection, Kendall and Kylie Jenner came under fire for their culturally insensitive fashion line at Saks Fifth Avenue, and Valentino's infamous "Africa-inspired" fashion show mostly featured white models with cornrows.

Reactions to the 2017 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show were predictably negative, and people took to social media to express their disappointment.

"So now Victoria's secret is totally ok with cultural appropriation. Wow. Ok," one user wrote on Twitter.

"Things confirmed during the VS show: We as a society are not quite over hair chopsticks nor sexy war bonnets apparently! Maybe in 2018?" another wrote.

"Am I missing that the theme was actually cultural appropriation," asked another user.

Cindy Crawford And Her Daughter Are Basically Clones In School Photos
Posted on Wednesday November 22, 2017

The phrase "like mother, like daughter" has never been more true for Cindy Crawford and Kaia Gerber.

On Tuesday, the '90s supermodel shared an old yearbook photo alongside her 16-year-old's current school portrait. From the images, it's clear Gerber is the spitting image of her famous mom.

School pics, now and then.

A post shared by Cindy Crawford (@cindycrawford) on

This isn't the first time we've noticed the family resemblance, but it is the first time we've seen how much Gerber looks like Crawford's younger self.

Just check out this throwback of the 51-year-old mom on the cover of Playboy magazine compared to a photo of the teen today. If it weren't for Crawford's trademark mole, we wouldn't be able to tell the difference!

A post shared by Kaia (@kaiagerber) on

Interestingly, the similarities between Crawford and her mini-me go far beyond their appearance. Gerber also inherited her mother's stellar modelling skills, booking her first major campaign with Versace at age 10. She then went on to sign a contract with IMG Models in 2015 and has been working with them ever since.

Just like her mama, Gerber is a natural on the runway as well, and proved this when she made her debut at New York Fashion Week earlier this year.

In an interview with People magazine, the 16-year-old commented on her and her mom's personalities, revealing that they have many of the same quirks.

"[Our look] is almost the least reason we're alike," Gerber told the site in May. "That's what people see because they don't know us, but we react to situations the same way. I think we're always really strict on time. And if other people are late, we get annoyed, so I think that's the same."

The teen added, "Mannerisms, kind of the way we talk — we both talk with our hands and stuff like that."

Kaia is the youngest child of Crawford and husband Rande Gerber. The couple also has an 18-year-old son named Presley, who is pursuing a modelling career as well.

Unsurprisingly, Presley also inherited his parents' good looks, but unlike his sister, he lucked out and got his mama's unique trademark mole.

Crawford clearly has one stunning family!

Ashley Graham Throws Shade At Victoria's Secret And We Love Her For It
Posted on Tuesday November 21, 2017

Ashley Graham has never been shy about calling out ridiculous beauty standards in the fashion industry, which is why she had no qualms about throwing shade at Victoria's Secret for their lack of curvy models on the runway.

After the taping of the 2017 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in Shanghai this week, Graham took a jab at the lingerie brand, who failed to include diverse body types in their show, yet again.

On Instagram, the 30-year-old shared an image of herself in lingerie walking down the 2016 Addition Elle runway, with angel wings photoshopped behind her.

"Got my wings! .. my #AdditionElle wings!" the plus-size model cheekily wrote.

Got my wings! 🦋💐🌈😜 .. my #AdditionElle wings! #thickthighssavelives

A post shared by A S H L E Y G R A H A M (@theashleygraham) on

Graham's body-positive statement is clear, especially considering Victoria's Secret Angels are typically tall and thin, such as models Bella Hadid and Alessandra Ambrosio.

The brand is no stranger to controversy and has received plenty of backlash in the past for not being inclusive and for perpetuating unrealistic body images for women.

Teen Vogue writer Jessica Andrews perfectly summed up the brand's problem when she wrote in 2015, "Victoria's Secret's marketing plan hinges on fantasy — the idea of promoting images women aspire to but can't attain."

Besides the brand's runway show, its past campaigns have demonstrated their ongoing problem with body diversity. In their 2014 "The Perfect Body" campaign, for instance, their ad showed a lineup of 10 women with the exact same tall, slender figure and busty top. Although the ad's tagline was a play on the name of one their bras, it clearly suggested that the women pictured had the "perfect" body type, Adweek reports.

As a result, the brand was so heavily criticized that a U.K. petition called for Victoria's Secret to apologize for its "damaging message."

"This marketing campaign is harmful," the petition read. "It fails to celebrate the amazing diversity of women's bodies by choosing to call only one body type 'perfect.'"

While Victoria's Secret has not revealed any plans to be more body diverse in its campaigns or runways, it's clear that it needs to change.

In response to Graham's Instagram post, a number of fans applauded her body-positive message and asked Victoria's Secret to do better.

"You are so beautiful and amazing thank you for standing up for all us thick girls," one wrote.

Another commented, "I'm getting fed up with not seeing curvy girls on their runway. @victoriassecret listen to what women are asking for, or at least, think how much $ you could profit if you bring in 'plus sizes.' Or do you intentionally want to keep curvy women out of your stores?"

Graham is clearly working to change today's narrow and harmful beauty ideals and we can't help but love her for it.

In addition to Victoria's Secret, the model has also called out Fenty for not using curvy models in its New York Fashion Week show. It's safe to say that Graham is a body-positive vigilante.

Lupita Nyong'o Has No Time For Magazine's 'Eurocentric' Airbrushing
Posted on Friday November 10, 2017

Lupita Nyong'o.

Even though it's 2017 and women of all cultures and backgrounds are finally being celebrated for their diverse beauty, it seems that not even an Oscar winner can get away with having natural hair.

On Thursday night, actress Lupita Nyong'o took to social media to criticize Grazia magazine for cutting off, and smoothing out, her curly hair.

Posting photographs on Twitter and Instagram, the 34-year-old "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" star showed what she looked like before and after the editors used Photoshop on her image.

In the before pic, Nyong'o is seen rocking a curly ponytail, while in the after pic, the actress' ponytail is gone, replaced with a smooth, super short crop.

In the caption, Nyong'o explains that the magazine clearly photoshopped her image to "fit a more Eurocentric notion" of beauty.

"Disappointed that @GraziaUK edited out & smoothed my hair to fit a more Eurocentric notion of what beautiful hair looks like. [don't touch my hair]," Nyong'o wrote on Twitter.

In a lengthier Instagram post, the "Black Panther" star wrote that it's important that women of colour be embraced for their beauty, "kinky, coily hair" and all.

As I have made clear so often in the past with every fiber of my being, I embrace my natural heritage and despite having grown up thinking light skin and straight, silky hair were the standards of beauty, I now know that my dark skin and kinky, coily hair are beautiful too. Being featured on the cover of a magazine fulfills me as it is an opportunity to show other dark, kinky-haired people, and particularly our children, that they are beautiful just the way they are. I am disappointed that @graziauk invited me to be on their cover and then edited out and smoothed my hair to fit their notion of what beautiful hair looks like. Had I been consulted, I would have explained that I cannot support or condone the omission of what is my native heritage with the intention that they appreciate that there is still a very long way to go to combat the unconscious prejudice against black women's complexion, hair style and texture. #dtmh

In a statement to The Telegraph, a representative of Grazia magazine apologized to the actress for changing her hair type and noted that they didn't "alter" the image. (Even though they clearly did.)

"Grazia is committed to representing diversity throughout its pages and apologises unreservedly to Lupita Nyong'o.

"Grazia magazine would like to make it clear that at no point did they make any editorial request to the photographer for Lupita Nyong'o's hair to be altered on this week's cover, nor did we alter it ourselves. But we apologise unreservedly for not upholding the highest of editorial standards in ensuring that that we were aware of all alterations that had been made."

After Nyong'o posted her criticism, social media turned out to support the actress.

This incident is far from the first and only time the beauty industry has airbrushed women of colour to fit a specific (namely white) ideal.

Just recently, Solange Knowles called out The London Evening Standard for altering her braids in an image that appeared on the publication's cover. Subsequently, the Standard apologized to the singer for digitally removing her hair.

In a statement, the Standard said: "The decision to amend the photograph was taken for layout purposes, but plainly we made the wrong call and we have offered our unreserved apologies to Solange."

In that cover story, Solange described how important braiding was to her, noting, "It is an act of beauty, an act of convenience and an act of tradition."

Tabria Majors Proves Plus-Size Models Look Good In Victoria's Secret Underwear Too
Posted on Thursday November 09, 2017

Brooklyn, N.Y.-based model Tabria Majors is challenging rigid fashion standards after recreating a series of her favorite Victoria's Secret photos.

Victoria's Secret is facing stiff new competition from a plus-size, Brooklyn, N.Y.-based model.

The idea that the lingerie company largely showcases thinner models didn't sit right with Tabria Majors.

She scoured through her favourite outfits from Victoria's Secret to prove, as she says, "that curvy girls can rock (and sell) lingerie just as well as straight-size models."

The breathtaking photos she posted on Instagram and Twitter speak for themselves.

"Maybe I'll be a Victoria's Secret Angel this year for Halloween, since it ain't happening in real life," she wrote in an Instagram post on Oct. 31.

"I've been thinking about doing this for a while, and the pieces happened to come together," she said in an interview with HuffPost Canada. "I really want to open the discussion of inclusivity in mainstream media."

Majors said that the Victoria's Sercet has been a staple for decades but they have been repeating the same formula over and over.

"I just want to know why they, and so many other companies, don't cater to the average-sized woman."

It boggles the mind that higher-ups at the lingerie company won't include more plus-sized "angels" among the skinny ones the brand is famous for. Tip: Diversity sells. Literally.

"The main argument I've heard is that it's expensive, time-consuming, and companies don't have the proper resources to expand their sizes," Majors said.

Majors says plus-size industry is lucrative

"I personally don't believe that, primarily because the plus-size industry brings in billions of dollars each year, and the potential profit companies would make should counter any of their hesitations."

However, Sports Illustrated has definitely taken notice of Majors.

The model is currently a finalist for SI's Swim Search, where 15 women will debut their swimwear line and compete for a chance to be featured in the 2018 Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue.

She's even bragged about her weight online to make it clear she is damn proud of how she looks.

"I'm Tabria Majors, I weigh 218 pounds, and I don't care if you hate my body because I love it," she wrote on Instagram in August.

And in doing so, she's joined famous plus-sized model and body-positive advocate Ashley Graham in fighting the weight stigma.

I'm Tabria Majors, I weigh 218 lbs, and I don't care if you hate my body because I love it 😊

A post shared by Tabria Majors (@tabriamajors) on

She's not the first to post shots of herself beside ads to highlight the lack of diversity — black model Deddeh Howard recreated a series of famous ads last year.

Androgynous model Rain Dove also reimagined Victoria's Secret shoots by Photoshopping their models' faces onto her body with the original image of herself beside them.

Hopefully, they'll understand that everyone ... shouldn't be 'punished' for their size.Tabria Majors

But she says major companies have to stop hesitating to showcase plus-size models.

"I'm sure there's an underlying reason that we're not aware of," Majors said. "Whether it's associated with costs or the company's image, but hopefully, they'll understand that everyone should be able to purchase any style of clothing, and shouldn't be 'punished' for their size."

Anyone at Victoria's Secret taking down notes?

These models are trying to bring you into the revolution. Stop missing it.

Oprah Gives Her Stamp Of Approval To This Canadian Sleepwear Company
Posted on Wednesday November 08, 2017

Oprah Winfrey arrives at the taping of 'Queen Sugar After-Show' on November 7, 2017 in California.

Everyone knows Oprah's stamp of approval is gold, which is why we can't help but freak out at the fact that the talk show queen has named a Canadian sleepwear company as one of her favourite things.

This year, The Sleep Shirt, a Vancouver- and Montreal-based sleepwear company, made the TV host's famous list. Specifically, Oprah noted the Blue Oxford Stripe Shirt as one she would wear as a stylish addition to a day outfit or for simply lounging at home.

"One of our editors wore this oxford cotton sleep shirt to the office with sandals and looked terrific," the 63-year-old revealed. "I'd relax in it at home or wear it as a cover-up. There might even be a few people who'd actually sleep in it."

Naturally, Sleep Shirt creator Alexandra Suhner-Isenberg was thrilled when she heard Oprah's positive review of her nightwear.

"She's such an influential figure, and there hasn't been a single person who hasn't been like 'oh my god' when we tell them the news," the designer told Flare. "To be recognized by such a major person and influencer is so great."

A post shared by Oprah (@oprah) on

Suhner-Isenberg modelled her nightwear after a 19th-century chemise she found at a vintage menswear store in London. She then founded her company in 2012 and has been creating stylish, oversized unisex sleepshirts ever since.

And thanks to the sleepwear trend, the designer's clothes have only been gaining in popularity over the years. Besides Oprah's list of favourite things, The Sleep Shirt has also been featured on Gwyneth Paltrow's lifestyle site, Goop.

Back in 2012, Suhner-Isenberg told the Vancouver Sun, "In terms of why people love them, we haven't reinvented the wheel, and you can find other brands that do night shirts, but we're known for them, and it's a great product."

Plus, if it's Oprah-approved, you know it's gotta be good!

Faux Fur And Fur-Free Winter Coats And Accessories That'll Keep You Warm This Winter
Posted on Friday November 03, 2017

Luxury giant Gucci's announcement last month to go fur-free in 2018 marks another inspiring step towards cruelty-free and conscientious fashion practices.

While fur is traditionally considered a common option for warmth in cold weather, numerous brands are making the choice to offer synthetic weatherproof fabrics and faux fur details to satisfy the demand for the functionality and aesthetic appeal of a fur coat or trim.

Stella McCartney has long sat at the helm of this movement, and Net-a-Porter announced in June that they would no longer be selling fur on their website, proving that the fashion industry doesn't need to harm animals to look chic.

Whether you want to invest in ethical, cruelty-free products, or are simply looking to stay stylish and warm, we're certain you'll find something to suit your liking in our roundup of fur-free and faux fur winter coats, jackets, hats, and scarves.

1. Frank And Oak Featherless Parka

The latest addition to the endlessly hip Queen Street West strip in Toronto, Frank And Oak offers more than up-to-the-minute style at reasonable prices — we recently discovered their parkas are proudly down-free (this parka in particular uses Thinsulate), and there's not a fur collar in sight.

2. Stella McCartney Fur Free Fur Coat

The OG of ethical practices and sustainable designs, Stella McCartney's #FurFreeFur Elina Coat is the ultimate in animal-friendly luxury. Impeccably designed and beautifully made, we're adding this faux fox fur coat to our dream wish list!

BRB, rushing out to buy this gorgeous silk-lined, faux coyote fur scarf. Whether you're rocking the everyday glam look, or saving this piece for a truly special occasion, this is one winter accessory that you're going to want to own!

8. Old Navy Faux Fur Shearling Vest

We've gotta have this waist-length faux fur shearling vest from Old Navy. It would look stunning styled with jeans and a long sleeve tee, or popped on over a long floral dress to add a seasonal update to a summer favourite.

9. Joe Fresh Herringbone Coat

This grey herringbone coat makes our list for a classic topper that's long on style but won't break the bank. Leave it to Joe Fresh to cover all the necessary details (funnel collar, zip front with snap button closure for extra warmth!), perfect for a stylish transition from day to night.

10. Joe Fresh Hooded Puffer

Nothing says winter is here like the return of the puffer coat. Canada's signature staple for fighting the cold has seen several evolutions from the Michelin Man likeness to this stylish version from Joe Fresh. We love the slim fit and bum and thigh coverage, making our daily run to the dog park/school/grocery store that much more bearable.

11. Wully Outerwear Doe Parka

Serious about stylish outwear and animal kindness, Wully's website keeps a running total of how many animals are saved by shopping #CrueltyFree. We're obsessing over their women's Doe Parka: weatherproof, multiple pockets, and the cutest Canadiana red plaid lining. What more could we want to stay warm this winter?

12. Lululemon Run Fast Gloves

Leave it to Lululemon to make the perfect gloves with all the features: snap closure to keep the pair together, fold top for extra warmth, and sweat-wicking super soft fabric for winter runs or snowball fights.

13. Hoodlamb Ladies' Nordic Nightwatch Parka

Our pick for all-black-everything winter warmth, this 100 per cent vegan parka from Hoodlamb boasts a luscious faux fur removable trim, hemp and organic cotton outer shell, and a Thermore and EcoDown lining, designed to resist extreme cold in full weather resistant chic.

14. One Teaspoon Heartshaker Faux Fur Coat

With a little bit of rock 'n roll and a whole lot of vintage styling, we're voting this patchwork faux fur jacket with vegan leather trim an absolute showstopper.

15. Vaute 'The Lincoln Future' Coat

We can't wait to bundle up in this cozy full-length coat made of 100 per cent recycled, windproof, snow resistant ripstop, and insulated with Primaloft ECO, also made of 100 per cent recycled fibres. Customer reviews claim this coat is a game changer for those of us who don't exactly love winter and we'd have to agree: a drawstring hood, internal belt, and ribbing at the cuffs, as well as a pretty princess cut make this coat a winter wardrobe essential.

The 2017 Victoria's Secret Fantasy Bra Is Here, And It's Fantastic
Posted on Thursday November 02, 2017

It's that time of year again.

Halloween is over, there's a hint of festivity in the air, snow dare we say is on the way, and it's all leading up to the one magical moment merrymakers young and old look forward to all year: The Victoria's Secret Fashion show.

The highlight of the show, the Fantasy Bra, was revealed Wednesday, and, as expected, it's fantastic.

The bra, designed by world-renowned jeweler Mouawad, is valued at US$2 million and is set by hand with nearly 6,000 gemstones: diamonds, yellow sapphires, and blue topaz in 18 karat gold, Victoria's Secret revealed. It took 350 hours to create.

Model Lais Ribeiro will wear the 2017 Champagne Nights Fantasy bra for the first time on the runway, Victoria's Secret announced Wednesday.

Ribeiro, 27, is the fourth black model to don the bra, Teen Vogue reports. Tyra Banks wore the bra in 1997 and 2004, Selita Ebanks had the honour in 2007, and Jasmine Tookes rocked the runway in last year's version.

Being chosen to wear the Fantasy Bra is a career-making moment for a Victoria's Secret runway model, also known as an "Angel," according to Refinery29.

Ribeiro is "beyond honoured," she wrote on Instagram.

"I am very happy and thankful for my Victoria's Secret family for trusting me and all the support from my on family, friends and fans," Ribeiro said.

I'm sorry but the pictures will just keep coming! 😜

The new collection will feature bras, underwear and lingerie in shimmering champagne shades.

What The Heck Is In Halloween Makeup Anyway?
Posted on Friday October 27, 2017

Unknown ingredients in Halloween makeup may spook you, but with some helpful tips and expert advice, painting your (or your little one's) face, this All Hallows' Eve will be a treat.

Narrowing down who or what you'll transform into is one problem, piecing the look together is another. But when it comes to things like face paint or makeup, it's worth spending a bit more on high-quality products to guarantee a safer experience for you and your kids.

Earlier on HuffPost:

In a study by the Breast Cancer Fund in 2016, 48 Halloween face paints were tested — all of which are marketed to kids. They found 21 of these products had trace amounts of at least one heavy metal, while some products contained as many as four metals. Some of these harmful ingredients included styrene, formaldehyde, lead, cadmium and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as toluene and benzene.

"You should buy the products at established costume stores, not pop-ups that open only for a few weeks before Halloween, or at your pharmacy where costume makeup kits are inexpensive, but are generally poorer quality," says Dr. Sandy Skotnicki, assistant professor at the University of Toronto and medical director at the Bay Dermatology Centre.

In this case, the more expensive the makeup the better quality, as it's not likely mass-produced."

When shopping for Halloween makeup, avoid any flimsy packaging with small amount of products (like those paint sets with numbers on them) — these tend to be products that are created for just the season.

"As dermatologists, we usually tell patients face creams that cost more are not that much better for your skin. But in this case, the more expensive the makeup, the better quality as it's not likely mass-produced," Skotnicki says.

Skotnicki also suggests avoiding any products that contain lead and ensuring the product has been vetted by government agencies. But you don't have to panic over things like dyes in face paint, since FD&C grade dyes are found in everything from lipstick to cake mixes. Simply, read the label.

The most common ingredients found in cheap makeup that could irritate the skin include alcohol, fragrances, artificial dyes, mica (which gives shimmer), glue, adhesives, waxes and oils.

Applying glue to bare skin doesn't require a dermatologist to tell you that this may cause a bad reaction.

Certain fluorescent or luminescent dyes can also contain colour additives that many not be government-approved, and that fake blood? It is made of a red dye that could cause irritation if it reacts with a petroleum base, notes healthcare site Vermont Urgent Care.

"Let your kids have fun and of course, use common sense. Applying glue to bare skin doesn't require a dermatologist to tell you that this may cause a bad reaction."

Skotnicki recommends testing a small amount of product on your child's ear a few days before if you want to ensure there are no allergies or irritations, and avoid adhesives and glues altogether on children under the age of two.

"Irritants are cumulative — it does not have to be one thing, it can be all together that cause the irritation and I would argue that is usually the case," Skotnicki said. "Another way of putting it — it is not the eye shadow, it's the eye shadow and eyeliner, and eyelashes all working together to cumulatively cause a reaction."

For makeup and special effects artist Samantha St John, Halloween is celebrated everyday in October. Her 28,000 followers on Instagram can expect scary (and sometimes gory) looks with her 31 days of Halloween posts. From split skulls to gouged-out eyes, St John's looks require safe products and an attentive skin care routine.

"My favourite things to use are water-activated paints for body art; silicone and alcohol paints for my special effects," explains the Vancouver-based artist.

I always use some type of barrier cream to create space between the prosthetic and my skin.

"Removal is the most important part... I always use some type of barrier cream to create space between the prosthetic and my skin, and I also make sure to safely remove adhered pieces."

St John recommends Telesis 5 remover and Isopropyl Myristate for heavier looks and prosthetics. For body paint, she uses the Franklin & Whitman's cleansing serum. St John also recommends avoiding latex, as it is a common irritant.

If using makeup from your personal collection on your trick or treaters, Courtney Kelly, beautyBOUTIQUE Manager for Shoppers Drug Mart says avoid sharing any eye products like mascara or eyeliner, and avoid using glitter around the eyes. Sanitize all lip products with rubbing alcohol before and after you use them.

As for your own costume, Kelly recommends playing with makeup already in your cosmetics bag.

The rise in popularity of colour correctors also means you may have some non-traditional colours at home.

"The great part of this is you already know whether or not the product works for you so you avoid any issues the night of," she said.

"The rise in popularity of colour correctors also means you may have some non-traditional colours at home that you can use as face paint instead of buying a new product."

To avoid any skin nightmare the following morning, use the golden rule when it comes to makeup and skincare — take it all off. Kelly recommends Dermablend Milk Makeup remover.

"Even if you get home late, don't forget to remove all of your eye makeup and apply a moisturizer before bed. Your skin will thank you in the morning."

You've Been Washing Your Face Wrong This Whole Time
Posted on Friday October 27, 2017

We get it — you want beautiful skin (who doesn't?), but your morning skincare routine usually consists of splashing some water on your face in between sips of coffee, or standing under the shower head and hoping for the best.

Thoroughly cleansing your skin is more important in the evening, anyway, when you want to remove all traces of that day's makeup and grime, right?

Wrong, according to a dermatologist.

Taking the time to properly cleanse your skin in the morning is just as important, dermatologist Natasha Cook told Daily Mail Australia this week. A simple "wash and go" isn't going to cut it.

"Cleansing in the morning is good to prepare for your application of your daily serums and skincare," Cook said.

It will act as an effective base and prepare your skin for that day's makeup application, she added. And taking care of your face, morning and night, is the key to a clear complexion, Cook said.

Dermatologists recommend a gentle cleanser.

Choosing the right cleanser is key

"The single biggest mistake I see people making is choosing the wrong cleanser," Cook said.

The Canadian Dermatology Association (CDA) recommends choosing products that are unscented or fragrance-free, do not contain common allergens, are non-comedogenic, and have a low potential for irritation. Brands such as Marcelle, Avene, and Garnier have products that have earned the CDA seal of approval.

It's also important to keep in mind your skin type when you're removing your makeup, dermatologist Julia Carroll previously told HuffPost Canada. Products with alcohol should be avoided by anyone with sensitive skin, Carroll said, and oil-based makeup removers should be avoided by those who break out easily.

What about double-cleansing?

Double-cleansing, or washing your face twice in one sitting, isn't always a bad idea, especially if you're wearing a lot of makeup or sunscreen, Cook told The Independent.

Double-cleansing can tackle different types of impurities.

Just be wary of over-cleansing, since that can irritate the skin and make acne worse, Cook said. She recommended using micellar water to pre-cleanse, and then use a gentle formula cleanser.

Micellar water is made up of tiny balls of cleansing oil molecules suspended in soft water.

"The idea is that micelles are attracted to dirt and oil, so they are able to draw out impurities without drying out the skin," dermatologist Hadley King previously told HuffPost. "Therefore, micellar water can be used as a facial wash, makeup remover and moisturizer all in one."

Issa Rae Is Proud To Represent Black Women For CoverGirl
Posted on Wednesday October 25, 2017

Issa Rae attends Black Girls Rock! 2017 at New Jersey Performing Arts Center on August 5, 2017.

Being a CoverGirl ambassador means a lot to Issa Rae.

When the 32-year-old actress revealed she would be the new face of the brand in September, she noted how, as "an awkward black girl in high school," she would see the beauty giant's ads in magazines and sing their slogan in her head.

But now that the shock of her new title has worn off (sort of), Rae revealed her pride in being able to represent women who look like her.

"[When it happened] I called my mom, I told my friends, and they were all super excited," she told Cosmopolitan in a recent interview. "To see the response that people had, I felt even more validated and more touched. It showed the support out there and that the news struck a chord and that people feel represented in a way that they hadn't before."

People feel represented in a way that they hadn't before.

A quick look at Twitter proves that people are loving the brand's decision to make the "Insecure" star one of their spokesmodels, not only because she's an inspiring role model, but because she represents women of colour too.

CoverGirl has made noticeable efforts to be more diverse and inclusive as of late by not only adding more women of colour to their list of ambassadors, such as Rae and Ayesha Curry, but by also including older spokesmodels, such 69-year-old Canadian beauty Maye Musk.

As a result, even Rae has applauded the brand for being more inclusive.

"Becoming a CoverGirl means a lot because the brand recognizes just how important it is for people to embrace their individuality and express themselves in unique and diverse ways," the 32-year-old said in September. "This has been a major part of my personal journey, and a message that I want to share with others."
