The Balance of the Future

Product : The Balance of the Future
Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : Do you make decisions based upon assumptions? We all do. Assumptions are often based upon unexamined perceptions. Most of our perceptions are understood through duality--good/bad, black/white, male/female. This book explores some of these perceptions. They hold a hidden key not only to our understanding of the past, but also to our possible future. The recognition of our global crisis is universal, whether conscious or subconsciously. This juncture holds the possibility of our remaining within our painful, self-destructive patterns, or of creating a glorious leap forward into a stable, free and peaceful world. This book offers an in depth look at our assumptions, shows how they have driven our history and may taint our future. In addition, opportunities are offered to enhance our individual and collective consciousness. Are we courageous enough to take them?

Description : Michel learns that his father is dying. This news precipitates a nostalgic journey into the past--a childhood spent on a dairy farm in French Québec. As a sensitive boy secluded from the world, Michel wavers between forbidden exploits and heartbreaking tribulations. Catholic school is a culture shock, but it''s the huge pumpkin-shaped teacher with a bad temper who terrorizes his brain most. They desert their isolated farmhouse and move into a cockroach-infested apartment in an English-speaking city one mile from the seductive United States border. There, Michel copes with bullies, Russian spies, and ghosts.Little Canuck recounts the humorous, and at times, heartrending memoirs of a young boy on his journey through a colorful landscape of emotion. The New Face of America: The Land That Was

Product : The New Face of America: The Land That Was
Category : Books>Fiction and Literature
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : America is symbolized by its independent, Protestant, Christian culture, unknown by any other nation or peoples, in the course of history. It''s a culture, legitimized, and defended, by an incomparable set of words, formulated into a Constitution, miraculously fashioned by an elite group of men, who carried the wisdom of God, and the ages, in their bosoms, granting the American citizen a unique legacy. This legacy has been gratuitously bestowed, on all peoples who have been legitimately drawn to this generous nation, requiring only that they love America, to become a part of its destiny. But in a short period of barely two generations of Americans, this unique culture has been taken to the brink of destruction. It is in danger of being transformed into a Banana Republic type, third world style culture.By the use of, not so free markets, and a misdirected compassion, constantly fed to the American middle class, by an unrelenting combination of money first, multi-cultural, corporate elites, and one world academics, each having a direct line to the media moguls. They are changing the face of America by the reconstruction of the independent, resourceful, patriotic American, into only a one world cipher. These elites are degrading the American middle class with illegal Mexican invaders, who are untrained, diseased, and unwilling to accept America, but willing to accept the manipulations of these business, academic and political elites. The book concludes that only a politically incorrect retaking of America by those same middle class American citizens, will preserve our unique culture, and keep America from becoming the land that was.

Product : Uneasy Males: The American Men's Movement 1970-2000
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : During the last three decades of the twentieth century there has been widespread controversy over, and alteration of, gender roles in the United States. To a large extent the ferment originated in, and was influenced by, the general social upheaval of the sixties. A major result has been a well-publicized transformation in the options, social status, and perception of American women. But what affected women also affected men, and a similar movement among American males therefore accompanied the feminist movement. In Uneasy Males, Edward Gambill provides an historical overview of the American ''men''s movement. The book covers pro-feminist and anti-feminist responses, and the organization and activities of men''s rights, father''s rights, ''mythopoetic, religious, and black male groups. While much of the focus is on the development and operation of formal organizations, there is also coverage of changes apart from these structures. Uneasy males thus provide readers with an understanding of, and thought-provoking question about, gender roles in the United States.

Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : Books in general at an early age had a profound influence on me. In their expressions and images of every sort I discovered a vast landscape of truth and emotion. After studying advanced Philosophy in college I left home at age 20 and traveled around New England and settled on a little island south of Boston. My love of the written word grew as did my writings and collections of eastern writers and classical poets. After a decade and intent on getting back to a more organic lifestyle I moved east into an old beach house where I''d spent summers as a child. Over the next decade I would travel the coastline with nothing more than a backpack and live healthy of body, mind, spirit, and write. These excursions provided a setting for a compelling mix of natural and spiritual inquires that filled me with contexts of purpose. Now residing in the mountains of Hunterdon County with my wife and children my collections continue to grow and my home is crowded with works of art, music, poetry, and philosophy. Now as always I continue to sojourn outdoors in all weathers and write and live with the literary immortals as companions with an assimilation and appreciation of the years.

Category : Books>Family and Relationships>Family Relationships
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : From early adolescence, I had committed myself to joining the seemingly growing legions of women pumping their fists with a can-do spirit and a perfect balance of career and family. I fancied myself a textbook candidate for the League of Female Marvels.until the narcolepsy and nausea set in, and I chickened out. Sacrificing a few rungs on the corporate ladder to stay home and be a Full-Time Mom (FTM) surely would prove a noble, not to mention more orderly, move. And think of all the discretionary time and energy! Cue laughter.Except within those rare close-knit and blackmail-toting friendships, the more maddening (yet equally funny) stories of motherhood are seldom shared-until now. From sex to sippy cups, the stories contained herein are told with candor, albeit through the eyes of a woman with a slight flair for the dramatic. Still, you may find them to serve as a mirror, a memoir, or a medicine to your own life-or that of any mom with whom you''ve ever lived. Occasionally sweet, always straight, The Myth of The Bonbons will strike a nerve with many women-and the men who find a well-timed placement of it on their nightstands.

Description : In 1965, author D. Richard Truman is a Canadian advertising executive searching for adventure and a warmer climate. When he is transferred to Nigeria, he arrives wide-eyed and blunder-prone. Tossed into the country to promote and encourage free enterprise, Truman is ill prepared for what he finds. Although Nigeria has enjoyed independence for the past five years, a civil war is under way, and Truman is about to witness Africa''s first self-inflicted coup.In a world where Russian Bolsheviks, old and new imperialist powers, big oil and big money, and corruption is ruining the country, Truman must navigate the treacheries of being a foreigner in the midst of a nation turned inside out. Historic gaffes, tribal in-fighting, religious differences, and massive business corruption are bubbling in Nigeria, poisoning the government, and leading to the death of African democracy.Democracy Shot Dead is Truman''s recollections of his experiences in Nigeria from 1965 to 1966. Full of gripping detail of a time in Nigerian history when a democracy turned into a military state in a matter of years, Truman''s account resonates with the devastation, confusion, and survival of a country suffused with turmoil.

Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : For anyone who has had to endure an IRS audit-or hopes they never will-Beating the IRS Tax Squeeze is the story of one woman''s journey through an IRS tax audit that lasted five years.Qian Yi began to chronicle her interactions with the Internal Revenue Service soon after her third office audit on December 5, 2002, shortly after she had returned from Shanghai with her husband. By that point, the audit on their 2000 tax return had been going on for twenty months, with eight intimidating IRS CP notices and three office audits-the tax assessment on her and her husband''s joint 2000 tax return having escalated from approximately $9,000 to a whopping $78,000.All the while, from the very beginning, Qian arduously negotiated with the IRS and hoped for a quick resolution, but it was everything but quick. Never could Qian have foreseen that their 2000 tax return audit could drag on for five years and that while it was still pending for a resolution, all their tax returns for years 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, and even 2005 would all come under IRS''s unrelenting and unremitting scrutiny. In this smart, worldly, and candid book, Qian adheres to the facts of her dealings with the IRS as she recounts her many telephone calls, multiple correspondence audits, and five office audits. Her uplifting tale of survival proves that perseverance is the key-only if you believe you are right-to success with IRS audits and, perhaps, in all aspects of life.

It's All About Jesus

Product : It's All About Jesus
Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : Osborn asks, Why be a Christian? After considering some of the typical answers tradition hasoffered, he contends that only one works: because Christianity is about truth, the truth that bearsthe name, Jesus. It''s all about Jesus-a most faithful Jewish son of God, who was called by hisFather, the Lord God of Israel, to be the witness to the coming kingdom of God. This ministrybrought him into conflict with authorities and with the power of the death they wielded, thusraising serious questions about Jesus and his authority. His crucifixion appeared to answer thequestion in the negative. However, there was a divine irony in the cross as revealed by theresurrection-namely, that the life and especially the death of Jesus was really the story of God''svictory over death and the evil it empowers, and thus the decisive event of Jesus''s messiahship.Yet, while death is defeated and has no future it nevertheless persists, and the church, which Godbrings into being as a result of Jesus''s ministry is called to continue in the power of Jesus to fightagainst death, especially its manifestation in social/political evil, as well as in personal sin.

Scenes from a Country Tea Room: New Japanese-American Poetry

Product : Scenes from a Country Tea Room: New Japanese-American Poetry
Category : Books>Fiction and Literature
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : Ronald Phillip Tanaka''s Scenes from a Country Tea Room is an exploration of the Japanese tea ceremony as seen through the eyes of a Japanese-American high school student, Laura Toyoda. Her poems and drawings of various types of pottery often associated with the tea ceremony are an attempt to represent the basic principles of tea, e.g., sabi, wabi (which have no real English equivalents) and wa (harmony). However, in a manner typical of tea, they do so indirectly by allusion, parable and inference. In viewing the tea ceremony through Toyoda''s eyes, Tanaka is examining the interface between traditional Japanese culture and some of the core assumptions of our modern global community. It addresses the question of whether or not the principles of the traditional arts have anything of value to teach us other than California zen, the Ninja Turtles and octopus sushi. Finally, Scenes from a Country Tea Room pays homage to the thousands of Japanese and Japanese-American teachers or sensei who, like Matsui Sensei of the poems, have taught and continue to teach traditional Japanese arts in the Japanese-American community since the first Japanese immigrants arrived in the United States over a hundred years ago.

Description : This book provides a chronological autobiographical description of my 20 year entrepreneurial journey including the good, the bad, the ugly and the funny steps along the way. In an effort to prepare, interest and entice readers. I confess that I am very proud of Computer Entry Systems Corporation''s (CES) performance as it grew from a few Founders, with an idea, to a thousand highly motivated Associates, on four continents, over a 20 year period. We competed, head to head, with the best of the best, including IBM, NCR and Burroughs, companies thousands of times our size and won almost 60% of the competitive encounters. After 4 years of start up losses we achieved sixteen years of consecutively increasing profitability, returning over 30X their initial investment, to Founding investors. While I, personally made 98% of the mistakes an entrepreneur could make, I persisted, I learned, I survived and finally, CES thrived. I hope that you enjoy this book, as much as I enjoyed the journey. Small Miracles: An Atheist's Faith Journey

Product : Small Miracles: An Atheist's Faith Journey
Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : What Christian hasn''t questioned their faith in God at some point during their lives? Most people accept their faith blindly as children due to parental influence, and Pete Peters was no exception. An automobile accident at age sixteen changed everything. Peters was speeding in a hilly area when his 1951 Ford convertible careened off a steep cliff and crashed one hundred feet below, causing his younger brother David to suffer fatal injuries. And so began Peters'' first question: How can there be a God that allows innocent people to suffer and die for no reason? In later years, he witnessed family trauma, senseless war, famine, two divorces, and other atrocities. From his point of view, there was no God to care. A self-proclaimed intellectual atheist, Peters still read about and discussed faith, and over the years devoted much thought as to why he felt God logically could not exist. After many small miracles eventually occur in his life, Peters finally realizes that faith is a gift that is only given to those ready to accept it. Peters tells his story in such a compelling and personal way that he will help anyone who is spiritually confused find their way back to God.

Description : Entering the world backwards with a broken arm, the boy remained backwards, a left-handed runt known to the Chicago South Side bullies as Georgy Porgy of nursery-rhyme infamy. It was not easy being left-handed in the 1930s and 1940s, as many left-handers from those days will attest. Parents were disappointed, and teachers were scornful, demonstrating their disdain with voice and ruler.World War II was raging, and Chicago''s South Side knew it well: mock air raids, alleged Nazi spies in the neighborhood, Rosie the Riveter, and radio heroes and arch villains surrounded us.Boys grew into teenagers, but life grew no easier, despite the unwanted intrusion into boy life in the form of adults, primarily parents. Living in the new demographic, boys faced numerous challenges-coaches, girls, drive-in movies, cars and acne.Told with loving and bemused affection for his family and the innocent days when play was really play, Georgy Porgy reminds us of what growing up was like in the good old days.

It pleased my heart that she became a journalist and fulfilled her dreams of traveling. I begin this story before she was born because incidents that occurred then would later encourage Akilah to take a life-altering trip to Africa on a work assignment. Akilah is the daughter of an African freedom fighter, John Amapindi, whom I met at a university in Jamaica. When I was pregnant with Akilah, John was called to war and I eventually lost touch with him. I would not know of John''s whereabouts until many years later when tragedy struck back home in Jamaica and John''s hidden traces were found in the briefcase of my murdered relative. Soon Akilah and I set out to find John and were led all the way to Africa on a wondrous adventure. Years after, Akilah would return to Africa a second time to work and all our lives were changed forever. While sorting through her belongings, I came across a stack of Akilah''s writings, and together we tell the details of her remarkable journey.

Description : In the tradition of Armistead Maupin''s Tales of the City, Steven Stanley''s enthralling debut novel takes a large and fascinating cast of characters (American, French, and Moroccan, straight and gay) and transports them, and the reader, to an intriguing and exotic time and locale-fabled Morocco in the 1970s. Just as San Francisco became more than merely a setting for Tales of the City, so do Morocco''s people, customs, traditions, and even its food and drink become an integral part of Moroccan Roll, a novel destined to engross the reader from its first page to its explosive climax. Claudette-She lived a life of glamour and adventure, until a very public love affair nearly destroyed it all. Dave-Morocco offered escape from a closeted boyfriend. Then he fell for a young-and straight-Moroccan student. Janna-Drugs seemed the only way for her to forget the Moroccan who had broken her heart. Marcie-She left Wisconsin to spread her wings, only to fall desperately in love with the town''s most infamous playboy. Kevin-Coming to Morocco meant a second chance at love with another man after tragedy had robbed him of his first.

Angell of Mercy: Tales from the nether world of long term care

Product : Angell of Mercy: Tales from the nether world of long term care
Category : Books>Fiction and Literature
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : The nether world of long-term care is the underbelly of our technically distinguished but humanistically challenged American health care system and the final stop on the way to dying and death for millions of our most frail and elderly citizens. Each of them has a story to tell, and this novel is a compilation of such stories as related by Rob Angell, a social worker with a deeply troubled past who is advocate and confidante of dozens of patients on the nursing home units of Mercy Meadows, an upscale Charlotte Methodist retirement community. These include Fred Walter, a retired, disabled, depressed, and bitter academic physician once renowned for broadcasting the stories of heroic pioneer physicians in rural upstate New York from his radio station at the university medical center in Schenectady. The two of them collaborate in recording Rob''s stories in a series of tapes that accumulate in Fred''s bedside table drawer. Upon being notified of Fred''s unexpected death, in going through his belongings, Rick Nelson, his 2nd cousin and an academic geriatrician who regularly combines social visits to Mercy Meadows with teaching rounds there with medical students there under his charge at the university in Charlotte, discovers the tapes and listens to them one at a time over the next few months during sleepless nights at his Carolina Piedmont home. While generally charming, these are also somehow deeply disturbing stories of Piedmont citizens living their final days in the apparent luxury of Mercy Meadows but passing them in boredom, neglect, and misery before coming to untimely ends, which remain unexplained and uninvestigated in the quiet environment of long term care where death is the expected outcome. This leisurely listening exercise for Rick comes to a crashing end when he listens to the final tape, which is the frightened call of his cousin who comes to realize in his final moments that his own death his imminent.

Description : Yesterday I danced on the head of a pin and smoked a camel through the eye of a needle .The opening line of Alan Geibe''s debut poetry collection in 2004, On the Corner of Mercy Street, left little doubt that a fresh and completely original, new voice had entered onto the scene of modern poetry. The collection, centered around the epic poem, Mercy Street, and layered with scenes of haunting imagery, has been compared to the music of the 1960''s, while leaning toward the remarkable fantasy worlds of such writers as Lewis Carroll, J. R. R. Tolkien and J. K. Rowling, according to Steven LaVigne of White Crane Journal. In this, his second collection of poetry, Alan Geibe truly channels the rage and rebellion of the 1960''s with a poignant introspective on the themes of war in life and love . and as a nation. With two new chapters in the Mercy Street epic, and proclaiming that I am these lost days . I''m cutting this dog to the bone, howling and crawling to the sharpening stone, Geibe leads us into faith and reassurance that there is indeed mercy, tender on the wall, mending hearts between love and war.

Description : Talk radio hosts seem to believe conservatives are from Mars and liberals are from Venus-two different species, in other words. Ron Lipsman''s new book uses a mix of rational analysis and personal history to suggest there may be deeper psychological laws at work here that help shape our worldviews. He''s on to something!-Elias Crim, Publishing Consultant.Professor Lipsmanargues for a correlation between age and political philosophy, which asserts that young people tend to gravitate toward liberalism while older people are usually more comfortable with conservatism; and that, additionally, among the people who change their political preference over time, more go from liberal to conservative than vice versa; and finally, he assesses the strengths of these trends; examines the most interesting counter-examples to these trends--namely, premature conservatives and aging liberals-and explains what motivates them; presents a history of the liberal/conservative divide in America and then augments it with an assessment of its current status as well as a prediction of its future; An insightful and witty examination of the values and beliefs that divide liberals and conservatives in America today. Description : Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the remote Red Lake area in northwestern Ontario, The White Ojibway Medicine Man and Other Stories is an intriguing collection of short stories based on the trials and trepidations of a young doctor treating the Ojibway from 1955 to 1963. When Joe Weinstein first saw the ad for a temporary medical position in northwestern Ontario, he had no idea that one month would stretch into the most intense and challenging seven years of his life. Thrust into a world very different from his own, Joe not only had to acclimate himself to the rugged land, but to the people, as well. Joe artfully relates his encounters with the myths and legends of the Ojibway tribes living on reservations scattered throughout the area, their conflicts with the world of the white man, and how he succeeded in becoming their medicine man. Accompanied by vivid imagery, Joe also reveals the fascinating stories behind the lumberjacks, bush pilots, missionaries, prospectors, and geologists who found their way to this remote area for one reason or another.Filled with wit and wisdom, The White Ojibway Medicine Man and Other Stories is a heartfelt tribute to the people of Red Lake. But it also shows the courage of one man to leave the familiar, enter the unknown, and make a remarkable difference in the lives of his patients.
