Category : Books
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : Rhyming Hope and History exposes the frayed relations between activism and social movement scholarship and examines the causes and consequences of this disconnect between theory and practice. Both scholars and activists explore solutions, weighing the promise and perils of engaged theory and the barriers to meaningful collaboration. In Motion, At Rest: The Event Of The Athletic Body

Product : In Motion, At Rest: The Event Of The Athletic Body
Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : In Motion, At Rest takes up the event as a philosophical problem from a novel perspective. Grant Farred examines three infamous events in sport, arguing that theorizing the event through sport makes possible an entirely original way of thinking about it.In the first event, Ron Artest committed a flagrant foul in a National Basketball Association game, which provoked fans to hurl both invectives and beer cups. Artest and some teammates then attacked the fans. Drawing from Alain Badiou, Farred suggests that this event extends far beyond Artest and into the actions of many others, including those of Rosa Parks, Jackie Robinson, and Emmett Till. In the second event Eric Cantona—a professional footballer (soccer player)—was ejected from a game. On his way to the locker room a fan verbally assaulted him, and in response Cantona kicked the fan. Farred utilizes Gilles Deleuze’s insights on cinema to theorize “the most famous kung-fu kick in football.” In the third event, Zinedine Zidane, captain of the French national team, head butted an opposing player. Applying concepts from Jacques Derrida, Farred explores xenophobia and the politics of immigration.Throughout, Farred shows how what was already inherent in the event is opened to new possibilities for understanding ontological being by thinking about sport philosophically.

Minneapolis Madams: The Lost History Of Prostitution On The Riverfront

Product : Minneapolis Madams: The Lost History Of Prostitution On The Riverfront
Category : Books
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : Sex, money, and politics—no, it’s not a thriller novel. Minneapolis Madams is the surprising and riveting account of the Minneapolis red-light district and the powerful madams who ran it. Penny Petersen brings to life this nearly forgotten chapter of Minneapolis history, tracing the story of how these “houses of ill fame” rose to prominence in the late nineteenth century and then were finally shut down in the early twentieth century. In their heyday Minneapolis brothels were not only open for business but constituted a substantial economic and political force in the city. Women of independent means, madams built custom bordellos to suit their tastes and exerted influence over leading figures and politicians. Petersen digs deep into city archives, period newspapers, and other primary sources to illuminate the Minneapolis sex trade and its opponents, bringing into focus the ideologies and economic concerns that shaped the lives of prostitutes, the men who used their services, and the social-purity reformers who sought to eradicate their trade altogether. Usually written off as deviants, madams were actually crucial components of a larger system of social control and regulation. These entrepreneurial women bought real estate, hired well-known architects and interior decorators to design their bordellos, and played an important part in the politics of the developing city.Petersen argues that we cannot understand Minneapolis unless we can grasp the scope and significance of its sex trade. She also provides intriguing glimpses into racial interactions within the vice economy, investigating an African American madam who possibly married into one of the city’s most prestigious families. Fascinating and rigorously researched, Minneapolis Madams is a true detective story and a key resource for anyone interested in the history of women, sexuality, and urban life in Minneapolis.

Our Gang: A Racial History Of The Little Rascals

Product : Our Gang: A Racial History Of The Little Rascals
Category : Books
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : It was the age of Jim Crow, riddled with racial violence and unrest. But in the world of Our Gang, black and white children happily played and made mischief together. They even had their own black and white version of the KKK, the Cluck Cluck Klams—and the public loved it.The story of race and Our Gang, or The Little Rascals, is rife with the contradictions and aspirations of the sharply conflicted, changing American society that was its theater. Exposing these connections for the first time, Julia Lee shows us how much this series, from the first silent shorts in 1922 to its television revival in the 1950s, reveals about black and white American culture—on either side of the silver screen. Behind the scenes, we find unconventional men like Hal Roach and his gag writers, whose Rascals tapped into powerful American myths about race and childhood. We meet the four black stars of the series—Ernie “Sunshine Sammy” Morrison, Allen “Farina” Hoskins, Matthew “Stymie” Beard, and Billie “Buckwheat” Thomas—the gang within the Gang, whose personal histories Lee pursues through the passing years and shifting political landscape. In their checkered lives, and in the tumultuous life of the series, we discover an unexplored story of America, the messy, multiracial nation that found in Our Gang a comic avatar, a slapstick version of democracy itself.

The Mark of Rebels: Indios Fronterizos and Mexican Independence

Product : The Mark of Rebels: Indios Fronterizos and Mexican Independence
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : In The Mark of Rebels Barry Robinson offers a new look at Mexican Independence from the perspective of an indigenous population caught in the heart of the struggle. During the conquest and settlement of Mexico’s Western Sierra Madre, Spain’s indigenous allies constructed an indio fronterizo identity for their ethnically diverse descendants. These communities used their special status to maintain a measure of autonomy during the colonial era, but the cultural shifts of the late colonial period radically transformed the relationship between these indios fronterizos and their neighbors.   Marshalling an extensive array of archival material from Mexico, the United States, and Spain, Robinson shows that indio fronterizo participation in the Mexican wars of independence grafted into the larger Hidalgo Revolt through alignment with creole commanders. Still, a considerable gulf existed between the aims of indigenous rebels and the creole leadership. Consequently, the privileges that the indios fronterizos sought to preserve continued to diminish, unable to survive either the late colonial reforms of the Spanish regime or creole conceptions of race and property in the formation of the new nation-state.   This story suggests that Mexico’s transition from colony to nation can only be understood by revisiting the origins of the colonial system and by recognizing the role of Spain’s indigenous allies in both its construction and demolition. The study relates events in the region to broader patterns of identity, loyalty, and subversion throughout the Americas, providing insight into the process of mestizaje that is commonly understood to have shaped Latin America. It also foreshadows the popular conservatism of the nineteenth century and identifies the roots of post-colonial social unrest.   This book provides new context for scholars, historians, ethnographers, anthropologists, and anyone interested in the history of Mexico, colonization, Native Americans, and the Age of Revolutions.

Laying Claim: African American Cultural Memory and Southern Identity

Product : Laying Claim: African American Cultural Memory and Southern Identity
Category : Books>Reference and Language
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : In Laying Claim: African American Cultural Memory and Southern Identity, Patricia Davis identifies the Civil War as the central narrative around which official depictions of southern culture have been defined. Because that narrative largely excluded African American points of view, the resulting southern identity was monolithically white. Davis traces how the increasing participation of black public voices in the realms of Civil War memory—battlefields, museums, online communities—has dispelled the mirage of “southernness” as a stolid cairn of white culture and has begun to create a more fluid sense of southernness that welcomes contributions by all of the region’s peoples.  Laying Claim offers insightful and penetrating examinations of African American participation in Civil War reenactments; the role of black history museums in enriching representations of the Civil War era with more varied interpretations; and the internet as a forum within which participants exchange and create historical narratives that offer alternatives to unquestioned and dominant public memories. From this evolving cultural landscape, Davis demonstrates how simplistic caricatures of African American experiences are giving way to more authentic, expansive, and inclusive interpretations of southernness.   As a case-study and example of change, Davis cites the evolution of depictions of life at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello. Where visitors to the site once encountered narratives that repeated the stylized myth of Monticello as a genteel idyll, modern accounts of Jefferson’s day offer a holistic, inclusive, and increasingly honest view of Monticello as the residents on every rung of the social ladder experienced it.   Contemporary violence and attacks about or inspired by the causes, outcomes, and symbols of the Civil War, even one hundred and fifty years after its end, add urgency to Davis’s argument that the control and creation of public memories of that war is an issue of concern not only to scholars but all Americans. Her hopeful examination of African American participation in public memory illuminates paths by which this enduring ideological impasse may find resolutions.

Ye That Are Men Now Serve Him: Radical Holiness Theology and Gender in the South

Product : Ye That Are Men Now Serve Him: Radical Holiness Theology and Gender in the South
Category : Books
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : Modernity remade much of the world in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and was nowhere more transformational than in the American South. In the wake of the Civil War, the region not only formed new legal, financial, and social structures, but citizens of the South also faced disorienting uncertainty about personal identity and even gender itself. Ye That Are Men Now Serve Him traces the changes in southern gender roles during the New South period of 1877–1915 and demonstrates that religion is the key to perceiving how constructions of gender changed.   The Civil War cleaved southerners from the culture they had developed organically during antebellum decades, raising questions that went to the very heart of selfhood: What does it mean to be a man? How does a good woman behave? Unmoored from traditional anchors of gender, family, and race, southerners sought guidance from familiar sources: scripture and their churches. In Ye That Are Men Now Serve Him, Colin Chapell traces how concepts of gender evolved within the majority Baptist and Methodist denominations as compared to the more fluid and innovative Holiness movement.   Grounded in expansive research into the archives of the Southern Baptist Convention; Methodist Episcopal Church, South; and the Holiness movement, Chapell’s writing is also enlivened by a rich trove of primary sources: diaries, sermons, personal correspondence, published works, and unpublished memoirs. Chapell artfully contrasts the majority Baptist and Methodist view of gender with the relatively radical approaches of the emerging Holiness movement, thereby bringing into focus how subtle differences in belief gave rise to significantly different ideas of gender roles.   Scholars have explored class, race, and politics as factors that contributed to contemporary southern identity, and Chapell restores theology to its intuitive place at the center of southern identity. Probing and illuminating, Ye That Are Men Now Serve Him offers much of interest to scholars and readers of the South, southern history, and religion.

The Pink Guitar: Writing as Feminist Practice

Description : An influential feminist study of poetry and writing. The Pink Guitar is a landmark study of women''s writing and poetics--and representations of women artists--in the 20th century. It probes the work of H.D., William Carlos Williams, and Marcel Duchamp, among others, and includes DuPlessis’s pioneering essay “For the Etruscans,” described in American Literature as “one of the finest pieces of criticism in the feminist literary tradition.”“This is one of the most pleasurable works of criticism I have read in years. These essays fuse disparate voices, colloquial, theoretical, autobiographical. They intercut DuPlessis’s own words with those of other writers and poets. They draw together aspects of being usually sundered in criticism, without imposing systems or closure.” --Helen Carr, New Formations

Sisters of Tomorrow: The First Women of Science Fiction

Category : Books>Science Fiction and Fantasy>Science Fiction
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : For nearly half a century, feminist scholars, writers, and fans have successfully challenged the notion that science fiction is all about “boys and their toys,” pointing to authors such as Mary Shelley, Clare Winger Harris, and Judith Merril as proof that women have always been part of the genre. Continuing this tradition, Sisters of Tomorrow: The First Women of Science Fiction offers readers a comprehensive selection of works by genre luminaries, including author C. L. Moore, artist Margaret Brundage, and others who were well known in their day, including poet Julia Boynton Green, science journalist L. Taylor Hansen, and editor Mary Gnaedinger. Providing insightful commentary and context, this anthology documents how women in the early twentieth century contributed to the pulp-magazine community and showcases the content they produced, including short stories, editorial work, illustrations, poetry, and science journalism. Yaszek and Sharp’s critical annotation and author biographies link women’s work in the early science fiction community to larger patterns of feminine literary and cultural production in turn-of-the-twentieth-century America. In a concluding essay, the award-winning author Kathleen Ann Goonan considers such work in relation to the history of women in science and engineering and to the contemporary science fiction community itself.Hardcover is un-jacketed.

Mind Fields: Adolescent Consciousness in a Culture of Distraction

Product : Mind Fields: Adolescent Consciousness in a Culture of Distraction
Category : Books>Health and Well Being
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : In Mind Fields, Thomas J. Cottle argues that the period known as adolescence is essentially a social construct influenced greatly by popular culture. To understand young people, therefore, is to recognize how the very consciousness of adolescents is shaped by a culture, dominated by the entertainment industry, and the power of television and the computer, constantly urging them to turn away from the normal evolution of their personal and social lives. In this fundamentally distracting environment, young people explore their consciousness, sharing it with others, as well as form their sense of identity, all the while having these most inner experiences affected as much by the culture as by their own temperaments and personalities. It is the culture that determines the forms of recognition and independence, as well as intimacy and attachment that adolescents must learn. In the end, the author argues for the value of self-reflection as a critical ingredient of identity formation and a fundamental antidote to distracting cultural influences.

Description : What is it about vampires that fascinates the human imagination? Blood Obsession closely scrutinizes theories of Sigmund Freud and Tzvetan Todorov and arrives at a model of the vampire as the perfect representative of genre for a variety of reasons – the vampire figure appeals to its audience because of an interdependency of looplike mental and narrative structures that lure both reader and writer incessantly back to the genre. At the same time, this book provides the reader with a thorough survey of literary and filmic vampires in both adult and juvenile fictions. Lastly, it blends the realms of legal and literary history by highlighting the changes the image of the serial killer, a close relative of the vampire, underwent at the end of the twentieth century. Description : Sex in Mind: The Gendered Brain in Nineteenth-Century Literature and Mental Sciences explores the role of the sexed brain in Victorian science and literature, showing the increasing nineteenth-century fixation on abnormal brain function and the cultural desire to create mental categories based on gender. In a discussion of neurology, psychology, and other mental sciences, Rachel Malane examines how the rational male mind and the emotional female mind became a culturally accepted idea that was substantiated by scientists and how the Victorian preoccupation with the sexed mind infiltrated contemporary literature. Focusing on the novels of Charlotte Brontë, Wilkie Collins, and Thomas Hardy, Malane analyzes how these narratives of love, insanity, and tragedy were in dynamic conversation with the prevailing views about the brain. Sex in Mind offers an intriguing look at the nineteenth-century understanding of the gendered mind – such as the belief that the reproductive organs were connected to the brain – and it shows how Victorian writers both incorporated and dissected the idea that men and women have separate minds.

Provincializing the Worldly Citizen: Yugoslav Student and Teacher Travel and Slavic Cosmopolitanism in the Interwar Era

Product : Provincializing the Worldly Citizen: Yugoslav Student and Teacher Travel and Slavic Cosmopolitanism in the Interwar Era
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : Provincializing the Worldly Citizen examines travel to Czechoslovakia by Yugoslav educators and students in the 1920s and 1930s in the context of educational modernization and national identity formation. It argues that was an important element in educating the Yugoslav child and in the development of schooling practices in Yugoslavia. The book examines how notions of circulated and were related to visions of the ideal Yugoslav, linking together these two concerns – not merely to cross-fertilize Slavic studies, the history of education, and the field of comparative education but as part of an effort to develop new intellectual strategies for transnational, cross-cultural scholarship. To this end, it examines Yugoslav student and teacher travel as an entry point to analyzing the regulative ideals that were inscribed in the Yugoslav child as a future citizen. From the broadest perspective, the book offers ways of thinking about the functions of travel and schooling by exposing the fabricated categories of ethnicity and nation as they become worked into cultural and pedagogical ideals. In specific terms, it is an examination of how interwar Yugoslav schools produced worldly minded Yugoslavs – not just through the official curriculum but across a wide range of cultural practices.

Desire and Avoidance in Art: Pablo Picasso, Hans Bellmer, Balthus, and Joseph Cornell- Psychobiographical Studies with Attachmen

Product : Desire and Avoidance in Art: Pablo Picasso, Hans Bellmer, Balthus, and Joseph Cornell- Psychobiographical Studies with Attachmen
Category : Books>Health and Well Being
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : Desire and Avoidance in Art argues that while early developmental traumas can produce life-long creative endeavors with striking aesthetic results, they may also, for the male artist, result in destructive relations with women. Brink introduces the scheme of personality formation – as found in the work on infant and child development of John Bowlby, Mary Ainsworth, Mary Main, Patricia Crittenden, Allen N. Schore, and others – to explore a new venture in psychobiography. He effectively uses the concept of to describe mother-infant/child relations and their sequelae. Using pertinent developmental data found in each artist’s childhood, Andrew Brink accounts for the anxious-avoidant attachment style (or, in Crittenden’s terminology, the Anxious/Controlling style) from which these artists suffered. He aims to explain why partnerships with women are sometimes hazardous and frequently tragic for male artists by referencing various feminist writers. Based on their viewpoints, Brink extracts psychodynamic explanations that are largely based on what the artists’ imagery reveals. Furthermore, he explains how the attachment theory of attraction-avoidance is shown to supplement and enrich other ways of understanding chronically tense relations between the sexes. Brink focuses his attention on artists such as Picasso, Bellmer, Balthus, and Cornell, who are culturally powerful and often stimulate discussion about misogynic figures within a social context.

Description : The Urania''s lengthy text may initially appear daunting, but Cavanagh argues that the romance rewards its readers with a richly textured narrative that artfully engages with numerous aesthetic, literary, and intellectual concerns from the early seventeenth century, including race relations, tensions between Christianity and the occult, global expansion, and the composition of the universe.A sophisticated and erudite study, Cherished Torment moves beyond the intriguing and scandalous events of Wroth''s personal life that have understandably captivated the attention of many modern readers to a closer look at the latter''s masterful integration of the issues fueling her era''s political, scientific, and philosophical debates. Cavanagh''s important study will enable readers to better recognize and appreciate Urania''s intellectual heritage.

The Philosophical Sense of Transcendence: Levinas and Plato on Loving Beyond Being

Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : What is the philosophical sense of transcendence? What meaning can transcendence have in philosophy? What direction, organization, and order might it give to philosophy? And how does transcendence transform or inspire philosophical thinking?Sarah Allen confronts these questions as she explores Emmanuel Levinas''s approach to transcendence, which is set within a phenomenological context. Levinas seeks an approach that does not subordinate transcendence to the self-referential activities of human consciousness, and which does not simply fall into ontotheological, metaphysical language about God.Looking for the philosophical sense of transcendence, Allen asserts, requires not only a questioning into transcendence, but a questioning of philosophy itself. Any reflection on human affectivity brings us up to the limits of philosophical thought and suggests that there are senses to transcendence that will always escape formulation in philosophical language.

Writing the Forest in Early Modern England: A Sylvan Pastoral Nation

Product : Writing the Forest in Early Modern England: A Sylvan Pastoral Nation
Category : Books>Fiction and Literature
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : In Writing the Forest in Early Modern England: A Sylvan Pastoral Nation, Jeffrey S. Theis focuses on pastoral Literary Studies in early modern England as an emerging form of nature writing. In particular, Theis analyzes what happens when pastoral writing is set in forests — what he terms “sylvan pastoral.” During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, forests and woodlands played an instrumental role in the formation of individual and national identities in England. Although environmentalism as we know it did not yet exist, persistent fears of timber shortages led to a larger anxiety about the status of forests. Perhaps more important, forests were dynamic and contested sites of largely undeveloped spaces where the poor would migrate in a time of rising population when land became scarce. And in addition to being a place where the poor would go, the forest also was a playground for monarchs and aristocrats where they indulged in the symbolically rich sport of hunting. Conventional pastoral Literary Studies, then, transforms when writers use it to represent and define forests and the multiple ways in which English society saw these places. In exploring these themes, authors expose national concerns regarding deforestation and forest law and present views relating to land ownership, nationhood, and the individual''s relationship to nature. Of particular interest are the ways in which cultures turn confusing spaces into known places and how this process is shaped by nature, history, gender, and class. Theis examines the playing out of these issues in familiar works by Shakespeare, such as A Midsummer Night''s Dream, The Merry Wives of Windsor, and As You Like It, Andrew Marvell''s “Upon Appleton House,” John Milton''s Mask and Paradise Lost, as well as in lesser known prose works of the English Revolution, such as James Howell''s Dendrologia and John Evelyn''s Sylva. As a unique ecocritical study of forests in early modern English Literary Studies, Writing the Forest makes an important contribution to the growing field of the history of environmentalism, and will be of interest to those working in literary and cultural history as well as philosophers concerned with nature and space theory.

Description : Every man who knocks on the door of a brothel is knocking for God. - G. K. ChestertonWhat if lust for porn is really a search for true passion? In a world where there are 68 million searches for pornography every day and where over 70 percent of Christian men report viewing porn in the last year, it''s no surprise that more and more men struggle with an addiction to this false fantasy. Common wisdom says if they just had more willpower or more faith, their fight would be over. Is the answer really that simple?According to the counselor and ministry leader Michael John Cusick, the answer is no-but the big truth may be much more freeing.Backed by scripture, Cusick uses examples from his own life and from his twenty years of counseling experience to show us how the pursuit of empty pleasure is really a search for our heart''s deepest desire-and the real key to to resistance is discovering and embracing the joy we truly want.Cusick''s insights help readers understand how porn struggles begin, what to do to prevent them, and most importantly, how to overcome the compulsion once it begins. In the end, this powerful book shows us all how the barrier built by porn addiction can become a bridge to abundant life.

Michigan's Heritage Barns

Product : Michigan's Heritage Barns
Category : Books>Art and Architecture
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : During her time as an art student in New York City, Mary Keithan never imagined that one day she would drive the state of Michigan''s labyrinthine back roads in search of architectural subjects for her photographs. But, in 1990, shortly after acquiring an 8" x 10" view camera, she began just such an odyssey. In the process she captured on film and preserved images of the rural landscape''s most endangered visual treasures, its aging, historic barns.      Many of her "subjects" are in poor condition; many no longer stand. And while we might expect a photographic series on aging barns to be a sad chronicle of America''s rural decline, instead Keithan gives us a visual story of endurance and perseverance, of a way of life that in our modern times continues to thrive.      What Keithan has captured with her camera and presented in Michigan''s Heritage Barns is enriched with her own narrative, often including interesting histories from the barn owners themselves. Photographs from most of Michigan''s eighty counties are included to create a collection that celebrates Michigan''s rural heritage as no other does. To use Theodore Roethke''s words, it is a visual hymn to "nobility of soul at odds with circumstance."

Edge of Empire: Documents of Michilimackinac, 1671-1716

Product : Edge of Empire: Documents of Michilimackinac, 1671-1716
Category : Books
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : Few places were as important in the seventeenth-century European colonial New World as the pays d’en haut. This term means upper country and refers to the western Great Lakes (Huron, Michigan, and Superior) and the areas immediately north, south, and west of them. The region was significant because of its large Native American population, because it had an extensive riverine system needed for beaver populations—essential to the fur trade—and because it held the transportation key to westward expansion.       It was vital to the French, who controlled the region, to be on good terms with its peoples. To maintain good relations through trade and diplomacy with the nations in the pays d’en haut, the French built a number of posts, including one at Michilimackinac and one on the St. Joseph River (near Niles, Michigan). These posts were garrisoned by French troops and run by French commanders who contracted with merchants to manage business matters.     Edge of Empire provides both an overview and an intensely detailed look at Michilimackinac at a very specific period of history. While the introduction offers an overview of the French fur trade, of the place of Michilimackinac in that network, and of what Michilimackinac was like in the years up to 1716, the body of the book is comprised of over sixty French-language documents, now translated into English. Collected from archives in France, Canada, and the United States, the documents identify many of the people involved in the trade and reveal a great deal about the personal and professional relations among people who traded. They also reveal clearly the process by which trade was carried out, including the roles of both Native Americans and women. At the same time, the documents open a window into French colonial society in New France.

In the Wake of Violence: Image & Social Reform

Product : In the Wake of Violence: Image & Social Reform
Category : Books>Reference and Language
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : How acts of violence are rhetorically managed by social movements: In the Wake of Violence explores the immediate and longer term aftermath of violence committed by independent radicals involved in single-issue movements. Cheryl R. Jorgensen-Earp explores several specific incidents in recent history—the arson of a Vail ski resort by environmentalists, the murder of Dr. John Britton by an antiabortion activist, and the torching of a University of California research laboratory by animal rights activists among them—to discover how the perpetrators of the violence and the majority of reformers involved in their movements rhetorically framed the violent act for a potentially outraged public.       In the Wake of Violence, claims Jorgensen-Earp, the perpetrators are often forthcoming with both explanations for and a defense of their actions, casting themselves as righteous actors or martyrs for a cause. However, ardent reformers within the same cause might look with genuine revulsion at the actions of their own radical wing. This study claims that the nonviolent majority in single-issue reform movements employs a predictable constellation of rhetorical strategies to manage the impact of radical fringe violence. The primary goal of this rhetoric is to avoid a backlash against the larger movement by a public alienated by violent acts.      In examining specific rhetorical responses by the nonviolent majority in antiabortion, animal welfare, environmental reform, abolition, and women’s suffrage movements, Jorgensen-Earp considers a wide range of discourse types—from newspaper articles, interviews, and editorials to private letters; from editorial cartoons to the homemade signs of movement activists; and from speeches to modern Internet sites. She discovers that the image restoration techniques brought to bear for a reform cause are similar to those employed by a corporation accused of wrongdoing. Ultimately, she finds that the majority of proponents of the causes she examines believe that the violence can or will be condoned and that it must be rhetorically mitigated.

Category : Books
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : The first new handbook of seed testing and taxonomy in more than 50 years, Seed Purity and Taxonomy replaces The Handbook of Seed Testing as the most complete and up-to-date resource of information available on seed identification and seed taxonomy. Seed Purity and Taxonomy contains a comprehensive listing of seeds along with approximately 3,000 black-and-white drawings, photographs, and computer-scanned images of species most likely to be encountered in seed testing laboratories in North America. Internal morphological features of different family groups are also included. These images are complemented with detailed descriptions and numerous dichotomous keys that will help in making definitive identifications.      The book also presents a useful how-to approach to many seed testing procedures, and purity testing of each species is discussed in a way that is intended to provide useful information about purity testing issues. The material is arranged in order of nongrassy monocotyledons, grassy monocotyledons, and dicotyledons, which are arranged alphabetically by family, genus, and species. It also includes identification features of the seed itself, and a general background about the species—its origin, distribution, culture, production, and use—which are intended to help seed laboratories efficiently serve their customers. Cited symbols are provided in all of the seed lists, indicating whether the species are considered to be crops, vegetables, herbs, or weeds in North America.     This book is an indispensable resource for beginning and experienced seed analysts, seed industry personnel, students, and others interested in seed testing and seed identification. While it provides the most comprehensive resource available for seed analysts, Seed Purity and Taxonomy will also be of value for botanists, taxonomists, agronomists, and anyone interested in seed taxonomy and identification.

Shedding Skins: Four Sioux Poets

Product : Shedding Skins: Four Sioux Poets
Category : Books
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : Here''s the myth: Native Americans are people of great spiritual depth, in touch with the rhythms of the earth, rhythms that they celebrate through drumming and dancing. They love the great outdoors and are completely in tune with the natural world. They can predict the weather by glancing at the sky, or hearing a crow cry, or somehow. Who knows exactly how? The point of the myth is that Indians are, well, special. Different from white people, but in a good way.      The four young male Native American poets whose work is brought together in this startling collection would probably raise high their middle fingers in salute to this myth. These guys and guys they are—don''t buy into the myth. Their poems aren''t about hunting and fishing or bonding with animal spirits. Their poems are about urban decay and homelessness, about loneliness and despair, about Payday Loans and 40-ounce beers, about getting enough to eat and too much to drink. And there is nothing romantic about their poetry, either. It is written in the vernacular of mean streets: often raw and coarse and vulgar, just like the lives it describes. Sure, they write about life on the reservation. However, for the Indians in their poems, life on the reservation is a lot like life in the city, but without the traffic. These poets are sick to death of the myth. You can feel it in their poems.      These poets are bound by a common attitude as well as a common heritage. All four—Joel Waters, Steve Pacheco, Luke Warm Water, and Trevino L. Brings Plenty—are Sioux, and all four identify themselves as Skins (as in Redskins). In their poems, they grapple with their heritage, wrestling with what it means to be a Sioux and a Skin today. It''s a fight to the finish.

Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : The nature of well-being is one of the most enduring and elusive subjects of human inquiry. Well-Being draws upon the latest scientific research to transform our understanding of this ancient question. With contributions from leading authorities in psychology, social psychology, and neuroscience, this volume presents the definitive account of current scientific efforts to understand human pleasure and pain, contentment and despair. The distinguished contributors to this volume combine a rigorous analysis of human sensations, emotions, and moods with a broad assessment of the many factors, from heredity to nationality, that bear on our well-being. Using the tools of experimental science, the contributors confront the puzzles of human likes and dislikes. Why do we grow accustomed and desensitized to changes in our lives, both good and bad? Does our happiness reflect the circumstances of our lives or is it determined by our temperament and personality? Why do humans acquire tastes for sensations that are initially painful or unpleasant? By examining the roots of our everyday likes and dislikes, the book also sheds light on some of the more extreme examples of attraction and aversion, such as addiction and depression.Among its wide ranging inquiries, Well-Being examines systematic differences in moods and behaviors between genders, explaining why women suffer higher rates of depression and anxiety than men, but are also more inclined to express positive emotions. The book also makes international comparisons, finding that some countries'' populations report higher levels of happiness than others. The contributors deploy an array of methods, from the surveys and questionnaires of social science to psychological and physiological experiments, to develop a comprehensive new approach to the study of well-being. They show how the sensory pleasures of the body can tells us something about the higher pleasures of the mind and even how the effectiveness of our immune system can depend upon the health of our social relationships.

Description : From the colorful supermercados of St. Paul''s West Side to the rural communities of the Red River Valley, Mexican Americans have left an indelible mark on Minnesota''s landscape. As one of the state''s fastest-growing ethnic groups, Mexican Americans have been part of Minnesota''s history since the early years of the last century. The history of Mexicans in the Midwest has been, more than any other group of immigrants, a history of working-class people. Railroads, heavy industry, meat packing, and sugar beet production all offered jobs for Mexicans who first came to the region not in search of a better life and permanent homes, but to work. Welcomed as migrant workers even as they were shunned for being different from the state''s dominant Northern European ethnic groups, Mexican Americans have grown deep roots in the state''s urban neighborhoods and rural towns. They have sustained a wide range of community, religious, and cultural institutions and introduced traditional foods and conjunto music to their new communities.

Description : Is there life on other planets? This intriguing question is still being debated in scientific circles, but Emanuel Swedenborg attested that he had actually spoken with spirits from other planets in the afterlife.Originally published in 1758, this startling book details Swedenborg''s conversations with spirits from Jupiter, Mars, Mercury, Saturn, Venus, and the moon, who discuss their lives on other planets and how their cultures differed from those of earthly life.Translated by the late Cambridge scholar John Chadwick and co-published with the Swedenborg Society of London, this volume also offers an introduction by Dr. Raymond Moody, who ruminates on how modern science is validating some of Swedenborg''s assertions.

Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : In this meticulous study, Wouter Hanegraaff examines the structure, themes, and development of Emanuel Swedenborg''s massive work Secrets of Heaven (Arcana Coelestia), published between 1749 and 1756. Written as a work of biblical exegesis (of Genesis and Exodus), Swedenborg also interpolated material on his visionary experiences, which have long fascinated readers. In the second part of the study, Dr. Hanegraaff examines the contemporary reception of the multi-volume work, particularly the critical reactions of Immanuel Kant and Friedrich Christoph Oetinger. He finds that Swedenborg''s biblical exegesis, so important in his divine calling, was largely ignored in favor of the mystical experiences.

Inspired by Margaret Dragu''s radio program, this book features 15 true accounts of mothering—not the baby-blue-and-pink, sanitized nursery rhyme presented in the popular media, but explorations of the enormous (and underacknowledged) transformation that motherhood brings to a woman''s sense of self, her mate, her body, and her connection to mothers throughout history.

Badlands: A Geography of Metaphors

Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : Foreword by Ross King, New York Times bestselling author and winner of the Governor General's Award. There can be few places in the world where the visual impact of the landscape is as hauntingly captivating as the Badlands of the Northern Great Plains. Encompassing Alberta, Saskatchewan, North Dakota and Montana, these amazing regions contain some of the most surreal and magical terrain you can imagine. Renowned photographer and painter Ken Dalgarno first visited Dinosaur Provincial Park in Alberta "more or less out of curiosity," he writes. "But I was instantly struck by the mystical hoodoos, spires, and other mesmerizing geological wonders. It felt like I was walking amongst a geography of metaphors, or perhaps entering an archives where stories have been exiled." "A treasure trove for dinosaur fossils and First Nations history, the Badlands," Ken continues, "are certainly a place where the past has invaded the present. Like finding a great writer, I wanted to read more. The result of my explorations is this photographic survey of the Badlands of the Northern Great Plains."Covering eleven unique Badland regions this book provides a living photographic portrait of some of the most intriguing and least understood places on Earth — North America''s mysterious Badlands. Description : Comprised of three essays written by Baudrillard in the lead-up to, during, and after the military clash in the Gulf in 1992, this book is a penetrating and provocative analysis of the unfolding drama using the author''s well-known concepts of simulation and the hyperreal. Fatal Gift: Jewish Intelligence and Western Civilisation: Who are the Jews? Vol. 3

Product : Fatal Gift: Jewish Intelligence and Western Civilisation: Who are the Jews? Vol. 3
Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : Fatal Gift, Jewish Intelligente and Western Civilization is the third and final volume of Seymour Itzkoffs highly praised series, Who Are the Jews? The theme of this book involves the Holocaust, perhaps the most searing event in the history of the Jews. Itzkoffs main concern is to understand and explain this event in the context of Jewish history and the unfolding meaning of the Western Civilizational experience. Itzkoff views the rationale for the destruction of the European Jews as arising from the anti-Semitic hatred of burgeoning Jewish intelligente and achievements in the West, this amidst the pseudo-egalitarianism that was invested in the ideological demonization of achievement in the social dynamics of the 19th and 20th centuries. The Holocaust was enabled because the Jews had become a vulnerable minority in Europe, attempting to assimilate, but carrying with them their unalterable heritage of religious and ethnic uniqueness. This they could not shed. ltzkoff traces this atypical intellectual endowment of the Jews to their Biblical and Talmudic disciplines, ultimately to their vulnerability and self-protection, and to the hope for political toleration by their governing masters. Itzkoff argues that Ashkenazic Judaism, by its classless cultivation of a universal internal, if impoverished intellectual elite, mirrors the best of the Western Civilizational heritage. The Ashkenazim never placed their own people under the yoke of the feudal oppression of serfdom and slavery, as did their daughter religions, Christianity and Islam. As such, the Ashkenazim became the inheritors of the great Western and Eur-Asian achievements of the ancient Cro-Magnon Upper Paleolithic peoples. Also, consider the Sumerians of Mesopotamia, who gave us literacy and urbanism, the Hellenes, who perhaps inspired the highest intellectual and creative civilization in human history. is a plea to understand the place of the Jews in modern Western Civilization, to treasure the EurAsian intellectual and creative gifts which the Jews protected and cultivated, and for which they were sacrificed by a modern ideological barbarism.

Spanish Sojourns: Robert Henri and the Spirit of Spain

Category : Books>Art and Architecture
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : Spanish Sojourns: Robert Henri and the Spirit of Spain is the catalogue of the first exhibition to explore the Spanish paintings of Robert Henri (1865-1929). Including more than forty full-color plates of the paintings inspired by Henri''s seven journeys to Spain, Spanish Sojourns provides a thorough examination of Henri''s lengthy engagement with that country''s people, art, and culture. The catalog''s three in-depth essays also contain a wealth of comparative images: paintings, drawings, photographs, and documents. Written by Valerie Ann Leeds, a noted Henri scholar; M. Elizabeth Boone, an authority on Spanish art; and Holly Koons McCullough, a longtime curator at Telfair Museums, the essays discuss Henri''s Spanish paintings in a variety of contexts-artistic, cultural, and historical-laying the groundwork for readers'' full understanding and appreciation of this major body of work by one of the most influential American artists of the early twentieth century.Spain and its people held particular fascination for Henri, who was attracted to the nation''s sunny climate, ancient culture, and spirited citizens. He first visited Spain in 1900, and returned six times between 1906 and 1926, often for extended stays. He produced some of his boldest and most compelling likenesses there, portraying a wide range of bohemian cultural figures including singers, dancers, musicians, bullfighters, gypsies and peasants. Henri''s Spanish paintings also reflect his admiration for the great Spanish masters Diego Velázquez and Francisco Goya, whose works he studied closely during his many visits to Madrid''s Prado Museum.EXHIBITION SCHEDULE Telfair Museums Savannah, Georgia October 18, 2013-May 4, 2014 San Diego Museum of Art California May 30-September 7, 2014 Mississippi Museum of Art Jackson, Mississippi September 26, 2014-January 4, 2015

Alex Katz: First Sight

Category : Books>Art and Architecture
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : In the more than 500 working drawings by Alex Katz reproduced here, we are able to look over the artist''s shoulder at works in their nascent state--a rare experience essential to any understanding of the artist''s oeuvre. Like a sculptor''s preparatory drawings, these are the sketches of a painter who is not a draftsman but a painter; they are the raw material, revealing Katz''s methods of looking and recording. Contours, overlappings, movements and attitudes are put to paper ever so quickly, with observation given top priority. Subject development, composition and memory are all elements that come about afterwards, when the artist takes up the paintbrush and moves to the canvas. First Sight contains a vast array of previously unpublished sketches and drawings, printed here in facsimile, at a scale of 1:1, and spanning the entire career of the artist, from 1950 to the present. The book is a limited edition of 1000 copies.

Description : Rather than force these love-stories into serial monogamies, this collection lets them overlap and tell a story of romantic and sexual multiplicity, a story of compassionate and passionate complexity. The Exit Show is about coming to terms with plurality. The work is sensual, human, and multifaceted. It depicts an intimate view of polyamoury in many configurations. Aesthetically the poetry is focused on sound and imagery, on the music/cadence of language, while the ideas depict a world outside models of monogamous hetero-normalcy. Variation in social forms are expressed, in part, through variations of poetic style that range from emails to prose poetry to lyric and beyond into integrated linguistic architectures. Blueprint For Theocracy: The Christian Right's Vision For America

Product : Blueprint For Theocracy: The Christian Right's Vision For America
Category : Books
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : This investigation sheds new light on the confrontational stance the religious right has taken toward contemporary America by examining the nature and origins of its highly charged ideas. It traces its belief system, commonly called the Christian Worldview, to four Christian thinkers (Abraham Kuyper, Cornelius Van Til, Rousas John Rushdoony, and Francis Schaeffer) known for their anti-modernist, authoritarian, and in some cases, openly theocratic ideas. Although virtually unknown to most Americans, these men have been treated like patron saints by the religious right. Their ideas, seriously discussed within the movement and codified in Christian Worldview documents during the 1980s, have been widely disseminated to followers through textbooks and seminars, evolving over time into standard talking points. The book then examines how the ideology buttresses the movement''s controversial, right-wing agenda. It explores how the Christian Worldview advances a concept of “total truth” that is unique to biblical Christians and enables them to redefine freedom, law, government, and even history and science, in their own infallible terms. A vision for the future and plan of action are formed on the basis of these certainties. The book concludes by discussing the danger the ideology poses to pluralist society and offers intelligent ways of confronting it.

With Needle and Brush: Schoolgirl Embroidery from the Connecticut River Valley, 1740-1840

Product : With Needle and Brush: Schoolgirl Embroidery from the Connecticut River Valley, 1740-1840
Category : Books>Art and Architecture
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : The Connecticut River Valley was an important center for the teaching and production of embroidered pictures by young women in private academies from the mid-eighteenth to the early nineteenth century. This book identifies the distinctive styles developed by teachers and students at schools throughout the valley, from Connecticut and Massachusetts to Vermont and New Hampshire. Needlework was a means of instilling the values of citizenship, faith, knowledge, and patriotism into girls who would become mothers in the early republic. This book describes and illustrates how these embroideries provide insight into the nature of women’s schooling at this time. Over the course of their education, girls undertook progressively more complex and difficult needlework. Before the age of ten, they stitched elementary samplers on linen. As the culmination of their studies, they executed elaborate samplers, memorials, and silk pictures as evidence of the skills and accomplishments befitting a lady. Proudly displayed as enticements to potential suitors, these pieces affirmed a young woman’s mastery of the polite arts, which encompassed knowledge of religious and literary themes as well as art and music. This publication has been made possible through the generous support of The Coby Foundation, Ltd., the Connecticut Humanities Council, the Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism, Furthermore: a program of the J. M. Kaplan Fund, and several private donors.

Symbiont

Product : Symbiont
Category : Books>Fiction and Literature
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : A story of human struggles on a world with alien biology that must be understood to remove the threat to the future existence of humankind. Symbiont is an exciting new science fiction novel presenting some of the challenges that might face explorers to a new world with a different underlying evolutionary history. Early explorers inadvertently brought alien microbes to Earth, and they were released by terrorists. Always fatal, the infection spreads rapidly while the research team is away on the alien planet. The challenges are both human including love, lust, terrifying but also wonderful experiences, and scientific being faced with certain knowledge that your failure means the end of humanity. Imagine yourself in the same situation, because we may face it soon as exoplanets are discovered and contacted. How would you react while at the same time incredible predators attack, microbes infect, and crew break under the strain? Only Stan and Selene can save Earth but they are trapped on the alien planet. While this book is entirely a work of fiction, the basic thesis is probably correct that our planet''s most primitive genetic material originated from parasitic, single-celled organisms that became incorporated as our genes with their now much transformed organelles acting today as our modern chromosomes. The hypothesis of this book is that the same process began on the far-away planet, but the single-celled organisms never became incorporated into the alien planet''s genetic material. So there is no sex on this planet. Instead complex organisms have developed with both reproduction and a history of evolution in ways that are totally unfamiliar to modern science. What would happen when our two very different biologies mix? And how would a scientist figure it out in time? The story is also based on situations that can and do occur on field trips to distant and dangerous places. People fall in love, get angry, go berserk (rarely, but sometimes), make amazing discoveries, have scary adventures, work hard, and get frustrated. The career scientist can be a strange mix of brilliant and stupid, humanly empathetic, or empty of passion. Their personal lives can be great or messy, while their professional lives can seem to be impeccable -- about like most people. The story and the thesis of the story is intended to be a platform for discussion and speculation. It is also intended to be the first of a series of volumes exploring many aspects of life now and in the future, all based on the reality of our natural world and the properties of the universe as we know them today, but pushed beyond what we normally see and experience.

Description : When the father looks on us from heaven, what is He seeing? His people serving without any connection to His heart, or His bride captivated by His love and beauty? Audience of One is about bringing Jesus glory and pleasure, not only as the reason for our existence but also as our primary calling in life and ministry. He cares about the intricacies of life, the small decisions and the big decisions we make. He wants them all to bring Him glory and honour. It''s about the first commandment of loving God with all our heart, soul and mind. We areliving in a time when society is becoming more and more self-centred and people are seeking fame, glory and a legacy. However, the Lord is calling us to make Him famous, to seek meekness, and to find ourselves in the secret place where we can enjoy Him and He can enjoy us. Johan not only shares this message but also illustrates it with stories of personal heart-level experiences. It is easy to accept that we need to give Jesus all the glory; however, it is a very powerful thingwhen this message strikes our heart.

Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : Up from Nothing is the story of the Michigan State University Cyclotron Laboratory and its growth from the appointment of a single individual in 1958 to when the university earned the right to build the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) in 2008. The cyclotron laboratory at MSU has been known for years as the best university nuclear physics laboratory in the United States, and perhaps in the world. But very few, even in its hometown of East Lansing, know how it achieved that status or why it prospered when laboratories at many other famous universities faded. In this book Austin, a nuclear physicist who has been at the laboratory since the beginning of its ascent, gives us a remarkable story. It begins with an exceptional individual, Henry Blosser, who founded the laboratory, built a cyclotron accelerator of uniquely high precision, and recruited a team of nuclear physicists that used it to establish the laboratory’s reputation. Its credibility led to a sequence of accelerators, each operating in a different sub?eld while continuing a tradition of forefront science, and to a laboratory culture that fostered the courage and foresight to compete for the FRIB in the face of daunting odds.

Paul Havas

Product : Paul Havas
Category : Books>Art and Architecture
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : The art of Paul Havas (1940?2012) is one of natural beauty, formal control, and unusual colors. Havas settled in the Puget Sound region in 1965 and went on to create a body of work dominated by oil paintings and drawings of landscapes and cityscapes, attracting admiring critical attention and considerable acquisitions by important museums. This book draws on Havas?s archive of writings, letters, and documentary photographs, as well as accounts and interviews with critics, curators, fellow artists, and friends to set the artist in a perspective of Pacific Northwest and American art history. The result is a lively tale of flyfishing, rural cabins, sophisticated city life, and doggedly consistent work habits in studios in Seattle and the Skagit Valley. Quiet yet friendly, like his appealing paintings, Paul Havas is revealed as thoughtful and witty, with serious ideas about art, culture, and his own position in contemporary art. Readers are sure to enjoy this lavishly illustrated volume with extensive color plates, useful contextual images, and historical documentary photographs.

Dear People in the Yellow House

Product : Dear People in the Yellow House
Category : Books>Family and Relationships
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : Just when Dave thought things couldn’t get any worse, the world proved him wrong. This is nothing like other coming-of-age stories you have read before. After moving to a “developed” country in the hopes of escaping from the memories of his encounter with a child molester, life threw even more shit at poor Dave, like racists, education scammers, druggies, homophobes, and religious freaks. Oh, and yes, even more pedophiles!Despite all the challenges, an unexpected act of kindness gave Dave the courage to feel love again and somehow, the whole thing turned out to be the weirdest investment lesson ever.--- --- --- Written as a series of letters addressed to a neighboring family, Dear People in the Yellow House is a raw, gritty, and heart-felt confession of past pain and hopes of future joy. In a tale that spans two continents, Dave graphically details the poor judgment, betrayal, and manipulation he faced at the hands of those who were supposed to care for him, as well as horrifying experiences with a justice system that has lost its own sense of purpose.Through these brutally honest letters, Dave describes all that he has learned along the way: that being evil is a choice, and that you can avoid getting hurt by those who chose to be evil only through being diligent and prudently managing your risks and those of the people who matter to you the most.A must-read for families about to send their loved ones abroad and anyone with mini-adults they care about. Seriously, no one should have to endure these predicaments the way Dave did.--- --- --- Visit us at : www.davekardee.com
