Native American Studies in Higher Education: Models for Collaboration between Universities and Indigenous Nations

Product : Native American Studies in Higher Education: Models for Collaboration between Universities and Indigenous Nations
Category : Books
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : In this collection, Champagne and Stauss demonstrate how the rise of Native studies in American and Canadian universities exists as an extraordinary achievement in higher education. In the face of historically assimilationist agendas, institutional racism, and structural opposition by Western educational institutions, collaborative programs continue to grow and promote the values and goals of sovereign tribal communities. The contributors show how many departments grew significantly following the landmark 1969 Senate report, ''Indian Education: A National Tragedy, A National Challenge.'' They evaluate the university efforts to offer Native students intellectual and technical skills, and the long battle to represent Native cultures and world views in the university curriculum. In twelve case studies, Indian and non-Indian teachers provide rich, contextual histories of their programs through three decades of growth. They frankly discuss successes and failures as innovative strategies and models are tested. Programs from University of California-Davis, Harvard, Saskatchewan, Arizona and others provide detailed analyses of academic battles over curriculum content, the marginalization of indigenous faculty and students, the pedagogical implications of integrating native instructors, the vagaries of administrative support and funding, Native student retention, the vulnerability of native language programs, and community collaborations. A vision of Indian education that emerges from these pages that reveals the university''s potential as a vehicle for Indian nation-building, one in which the university curriculum also benefits from sustained contacts with tribal communities. As Native populations grow and the demand for university training increases, this book will be a valuable resource for Native American leaders, educators in Native American studies, race and ethnic studies, comparative education, minorities in education, anthropology, sociology, higher education administration and educational policy.

Key Themes in Qualitative Research: Continuities and Changes

Product : Key Themes in Qualitative Research: Continuities and Changes
Category : Books>Reference and Language
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : Key Themes in Qualitative Research is an attempt by three well-respected ethnographic researchers to present a balanced view of qualitative methodology and research. The book is structured around classic texts, written by methodological pioneers, which comprise the basic foundation of modern qualitative research. The authors examine key premises in these texts, such as intimacy, advocacy, and validity, and how they may be supported, redesigned, or made problematic in today''s field. This allows for a critical analysis of Old Guard vs. Avant-Garde ideas and provides for the reader a guide to wade through the proliferation of texts and theories available since the postmodern turn. While not designed as a primer in qualitative research methods, anyone with modest experience in the field should find this book extremely useful.

Ethnographically Speaking: Autoethnography, Literature, and Aesthetics

Product : Ethnographically Speaking: Autoethnography, Literature, and Aesthetics
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : This volume presents the latest explorations of the literary turn in ethnographic work by many of the leading people in the area. Centering on autoethnography, personal narrative, ethnographic performance, and the blending of social science and the arts, the articles collected here emphasize embodiment, experiential understanding, participatory ways of knowing, sensuous engagement, and intimate encounter. Drawing from disciplines as diverse as sociology, philosophy, performance studies, communication, family therapy, and English, the authors here demonstrate the many ways in which ethnography can be effectively conducted and expressed. The editors weave narrative and conversations surrounding the conference from which these pieces emerged into a reflexive volume which includes poetry, stories, theatre, and visual media as well as critical pieces. Accessible and jargon free, this book should excite scholars and students as to the expanding possibilities for ethnographic presentation.

Religion Across Borders: Transnational Immigrant Networks

Product : Religion Across Borders: Transnational Immigrant Networks
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : The new immigrants coming to the United States and establishing ethnic congregations do not abandon religious ties in their home countries. Rather, as they communicate with family and friends left behind in their homelands, they influence religious structures and practices there. Religion Across Borders examines both personal and organizational networks that exist between members in U.S. immigrant religious communities and individuals and religious institutions left behind. Building upon Religion and the New Immigrants (2000)-their previous study of immigrant religious communities in Houston-sociologists Ebaugh and Chafetz ask how religious remittances flow between home and host communities, how these interchanges affect religious practices in both settings, and how influences change over time as new immigrants become settled. The study''s unique comparative perspective looks at differing faith groups (Catholic, Protestant, Buddhist) from Argentina, Mexico, Guatamala, Vietnam and China. Data on ways in which historic, geographic, economic and religious factors influence transnational religious ties makes necessary reading for students of immigration, religion and anyone interested in the increasingly global aspects of American religion.

Gay Religion

Product : Gay Religion
Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : Conflicts over homosexuality and gay rights threaten to break apart denominations, if not North American society. These heated theological and political debates have, as well, obscured the fact that many gays and lesbians are religiously active individuals. Gay Religion is the first book to give a straightforward presentation of the spiritual lives, practices and expressions of gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender. Drawing from a wide range of religious traditions, new and established scholars explore the range of gay religious expression in denominations, sects, and even outside recognized religious institutions. The essays ask what these religious innovations mean to the continually evolving religious environment of North America. With its helpful section introductions and an appendix providing profiles of organizations involved, Gay Religion is a unique and compelling resource for anyone interested in homosexuality and American religion.

A Kwakiutl Village And School

Product : A Kwakiutl Village And School
Category : Books>Reference and Language
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : This book is a reprint of a now classic text dealing with Wolcott''s dissertation topic on the study of a Kwakiutl Indian village and the one-room school he taught at Village Island in the Alert Bay region of British Columbia. Within the book, Wolcott''s interest in anthropology and training as an educator are blended together to present a unique look into the educational training of Indian children. Village life and the social environment from which young Indian children learn cultural conventions are skillfully contrasted with the formal, structured educational system-of which Wolcott as a teacher is part of-within the village. In showing these two opposing educational systems, the author is able to highlight problems that arise and additionally the issues which come from an ethnographer being involved in a situation more than through just observation.

Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : In Teachers Versus Technocrats, author Harry Wolcott draws on his dual perspective as an educator and an anthropologist to provide a unique and penetrating look at the dynamics of a federally funded research and development project and to analyze what happened when university researchers and school district administrators attempted to introduce an experimental planning and evaluation system in an operating school district. Based on three years of research in which Wolcott uses a variety of anthropological field techniques, this study into the school''s SPECS (School Planning, Evaluation, and Communication System) program reveals insight into the project''s impact on teachers and administrators and analyzes the basic cultural patterns and relationships among educators. Originally published in 1977, this new edition includes an updated preface by the author and should be valuable to educators and anthropologists alike.

Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : When asked their religious identification, more people answer none in the Pacific Northwest than in any other region of the United States. But this does not mean that the region''s religious institutions are without power or that Northwesterners who do attend no place of worship are without spiritual commitments. With no dominant denomination, Evangelicals, Mainline Protestants, Catholics, Jews, adherents of Pacific Rim religious traditions, indigenous groups, spiritual environmentalists, and secularists must vie or sometimes must cooperate with each other to address the regions'' pressing economic, environmental, and social issues. One cannot understand this complex region without understanding the fluid religious commitments of its inhabitants. And one cannot understand religion in Oregon, Washington, and Alaska without Religion and Public Life in the Pacific Northwest.

Religion and Public Life in the Mountain West: Sacred Landscapes in Transition

Product : Religion and Public Life in the Mountain West: Sacred Landscapes in Transition
Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : Huge mountain ranges and vast uninhabited areas characterize the Mountain West. The region is home to several dense urban centers, but there is enough space between cities for three very distinct religious cultures to develop. Arizona and New Mexico''s religious public life is still dominated by the Catholic church which was in place three centuries before these areas became U.S. states. Mormons came to Utah and Idaho in the 19th century to set up their own church-state and only later were admitted to the Union. Religious minorities from Native Americans to ''mainstream'' Protestants must contend with these religious establishments. In the third subregion of Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana no one religious body dominates and many inhabitants claim no religious affiliation at all. Religion and Public Life in the Mountain West explores these three distinct religious regions but then goes on to see how they work together and what they have in common.

Religion and Public Life in New England: Steady Habits Changing Slowly

Product : Religion and Public Life in New England: Steady Habits Changing Slowly
Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : Although stoical New Englanders may not be showy about it, religion continues to play a powerful role in their culture. In fact, their very reticence to discuss religion may stem from long-standing religious divisions in the region. Beginning in the 1840s, Catholics flocked to the region and soon challenged the Protestant establishment. Tensions between the powerful mainline Protestant minority and the Catholic majority continues to today. This third volume in the Religion by Region series devotes many of its pages to these two dominant groups. Yet the roles of Conservative Protestants, African Americans & Jews are not overlooked. Religion and Public Life in New England also imagines the long-term effects of recent developments such as the arrival of non-Judeo-Christian religions to the region and the Catholic priest sexual abuse scandal. Religion and Public Life in New England provides a very readable account of religion in this most regional of U.S. regions.

Women in College: Shaping New Feminine Identities

Product : Women in College: Shaping New Feminine Identities
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : In Women in College, feminist and sociologist Mirra Komarovsky interviewed women who entered Barnard College in the fall of 1979, finding that the demands of college life facilitated and occasionally forced many of these women to change their self-concept. Many felt trapped between new ideals of femininity - including action, vigor, rational competence, and effectiveness - and traditional notions of femininity, centered around emotional nurturance, passivity and kindness. This study forms the basis of her critique of the struggle that arose from the differences in what were seen as the mutually exclusive roles of homemaker and those who pursued work outside the home.

Women in the Modern World: Their Education and Their Dilemmas

Product : Women in the Modern World: Their Education and Their Dilemmas
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : In Women in the Modern World, noted feminist and sociologist Mirra Komarovsky begins with a consideration of biology. Reflecting on these now-familiar arguments that the natural biological differences between women and men dictate different social roles, Komarovsky demolishes these arguments by carefully reviewing studies that find sex differences in cognitive abilities, achievement, and psychological predispositions. In successive chapters, Komarovsky explores how differential socialization produces the differences that we think we observe between women and men, and how gender inequality disfigures the lives of women, men, and the relationships between them. One chapter examines how it plays out among college students at Barnard in the first college generation after the Second World War. Many of these bright and ambitious women feel trapped between their talents and the constraints of feminine domesticity mapped out for them by social expectations. Successive chapters examine the costs of choosing either alternative. Full-time homemakers feel, at best, overworked and undervalued, and at worst resentful and bitter. Many regret the ''painful reorganization of life,'' and long, instead ''for the relinquished occupation.'' It is this longing, she argues that leads so many women to ''flit from one evanescent interest to another, arriving at late or middle age without anything that would given meaning or continuity to their lives.''

Dilemmas of Masculinity: A Study of College Youth

Product : Dilemmas of Masculinity: A Study of College Youth
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : In Dilemmas of Masculinity, noted sociologist Mirra Komarovsky turns her attention to the consequences of feminism among women on the lives of men. As she''d documented in Women in the Modern World, and would again in Women in College, women''s lives had changed enormously in the thirty-plus years Komarovsky taught at Barnard College. Women now are able to own their intelligence without apology, and most of the women had career aspirations that were equal to the men across the street at Columbia. In fieldwork conducted with Columbia College seniors in 1969-1970, she continually found that women''s newly claimed freedoms, however, sat uneasily on men who had been raised in traditional homes. On the one hand, they respected women''s intellectual achievements and even welcomed women''s career aspirations. The campus ethos demanded that men pay at least lip service to liberal attitudes towards working wives, Komarovsky wrote in an article based on the research. On the other hand, they didn''t want to sacrifice any of the privileges they had been taught to expect - that their wives would do virtually all the child care and housework. As a result, the men were utterly unprepared for the new world of gender equality that women were beginning to demand.

Chiefdoms and Other Archaeological Delusions

Product : Chiefdoms and Other Archaeological Delusions
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : In recent decades anthropology, especially ethnography, has supplied the prevailing models of how human beings have constructed, and been constructed by, their social arrangements. In turn, archaeologists have all too often relied on these models to reconstruct the lives of ancient peoples. In lively, engaging, and informed prose, Timothy Pauketat debunks much of this social-evolutionary theorizing about human development, as he ponders the evidence of ''chiefdoms'' left behind by the Mississippian culture of the American southern heartland. This book challenges all students of history and prehistory to reexamine the actual evidence that archaeology has made available, and to do so with an open mind.

Pursuing Hollywood: Seduction, Obsession, Dread

Product : Pursuing Hollywood: Seduction, Obsession, Dread
Category : Books>Entertainment
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : Before coming to the academy, Nathaniel Kohn was a screenwriter and producer in Hollywood, London, and South Africa. He produced the epic film Zulu Dawn (with Burt Lancaster, Peter O''Toole and 6,000 Zulu extras), and was involved in other projects in that wheel-and-deal world. Moving to the communications research world, he struggled to apply theory to his personal experiences, showing how everyday life and the pursuits of Hollywood interact and how communication and cultural theory (mis)inform those exchanges. The book is filled with priceless tales of finding a black market money changer in Johannesburg to pay off his extras during the filming of Zulu Dawn, the on again/off again nature of movie projects, the obsessed women and dreadful men, the egos, and the duplicity. His experimental writing style-descriptive ethnography, imaginary screen dialogue, recounted conversations-makes this a highly readable work.

Sharing Our Stories of Survival: Native Women Surviving Violence

Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : A general introduction to the social and legal issues involved in acts of violence against Native women, this book''s contributors are lawyers, social workers, social scientists, writers, poets, and victims. In the U.S. Native women are more likely than women from any other group to suffer violence, from rape and battery to more subtle forms of abuse, and Sharing Our Stories of Survival explores the causes and consequences of such behavior. The stories and case-studies presented here are often painful and raw, and the statistics are overwhelmingly grim; but a countervailing theme also runs through this extremely informative volume: Many of the women who appear in these pages are survivors, often strengthened by their travails, and the violence examined here is human violence, meaning that it can be changed, if only with much effort and education. The first step is to lay out the truth for all to see, and that is the purpose accomplished by this book.

Assessing Site Significance: A Guide for Archaeologists and Historians

Description : Assessing Site Significance is an invaluable resource for archaeologists and others who need guidance in determining whether sites are eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Because the register''s eligibility criteria were largely developed for standing sites, it is difficult to know in any particular case whether a site known primarily through archaeological work has sufficient ''historical significance'' to be listed. Hardesty and Little address these challenges, describing how to file for NRHP eligibility and how to determine the historical significance of archaeological properties. Causal Explanation for Social Scientists: A Reader

Product : Causal Explanation for Social Scientists: A Reader
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : All social scientists, despite their differences on many issues, ask causal questions about the world. In this anthology, Andrew P. Vayda and Bradley B. Walters set forth strategy and methods to answer those questions. Three World Cuisines: Italian, Mexican, Chinese

Product : Three World Cuisines: Italian, Mexican, Chinese
Category : Books>Food and Drink>Food Writing
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : The text begins with a comprehensive theory of cuisine in the introduction and moves to the parallel culinary histories of Italy, Mexico, and China: the independent domestication of crops in each, the social, political, and technological developments that gave rise to each cuisine, and cooking in both professional and home settings. It also compares the internal logic of the cooking style and techniques in a way that will resonate with students. The meat of the text compares and contrasts the three cuisines in chapters on grains and starches; vegetables; fruits and nuts; meat, poultry, and dairy products; fish and shellfish; fats and flavorings, and beverages. Readers are taken on a fascinating journey of discovery, where the background story of mis-transmission, adaptation, and evolution of cooking as it spreads around the globe with trade and immigration is revealed. It answers the big questions, such as, why did the wok prevail in China, while the sautée pan and comal were used in Italy and Mexico, respectively? Why is bread baked in the Mediterranean but more often steamed in the Far East? How are certain ingredients used in completely different ways by different cultures and why? Why is corn transformed into tortillas and tamales in one place and into polenta in another? Why do we find tomato salsa in the Americas, long-cooked sauces in Italy, and tomatoes mixed with scrambled eggs in China? Albala also challenges the notion of authenticity, providing ample evidence that cuisines are constantly evolving, adapting over time according to ingredients and cooking technologies. More than 150 of Albala''s recipes complete the instruction, inspiring readers to learn how to cook in a fundamental way.

Description : Interpreting Slavery at Museums and Historic Sites aims to move the field forward in its collective conversation about the interpretation of slavery-acknowledging the criticism of the past and acting in the present to develop an inclusive interpretation of slavery. Presenting the history of slavery in a comprehensive and conscientious manner is difficult and requires diligence and compassion-for the history itself, for those telling the story, and for those hearing the stories-but it''s a necessary part of our collective narrative about our past, present, and future. This book features best practices for:.Interpreting slavery across the country and for many people. The history of slavery, while traditionally interpreted primarily on southern plantations, is increasingly recognized as relevant at historic sites across the nation. It is also more than just an African-American/European-American story-it is relevant to the history of citizens of Latino, Caribbean, African and indigenous descent, as well. It is also pertinent to those descended from immigrants who arrived after slavery, whose stories are deeply intertwined with the legacy of slavery and its aftermath..Developing support within an institution for the interpretation of slavery. Many institutions are reticent to approach such a potentially volatile subject, so this book examines how proponents at several sites, including Monticello and Mount Vernon, were able to make a strong case to their constituents. .Training interpreters in not only a depth of knowledge of the subject but also the confidence to speak on this controversial issue in public and the compassion to handle such a sensitive historical issue. The book will be accessible and of interest for professionals at all levels in the public history field, as well as students at the undergraduate and graduate levels in museum studies and public history programs.

Zen Among The Magnolias

Product : Zen Among The Magnolias
Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : Zen Among the Magnolias explores the integration of some of the practices of Zen and of Christianity. Benjamin Lee Wren discusses the possibilities as people from different backgrounds seek a deeper meaning for their lives, without destroying their heritage, through experiences such as zazen, tai chi, ikebana, folk dancing, and the celebration of the liturgy. He focuses on living in the present rather than in the past or the future. Wren explains a merging of asceticism and aesthetics which leads to a philosophy and theology that appreciates less as more, asymmetry, simplicity, tranquillity, and the beauty of aging. He shows how through parallels between the Four Noble Truths and Eight Fold Path of the Buddha and the Eight Beatitudes of Jesus, people become more sensitive to the problems of social justice. The result of an understanding of Zen through the nonverbal and nonimage form of pure contemplation called zazen, Wren demonstrates, is an experience of depth and breadth into the root of one''s own being. This practice does not discount a Christian background; instead, it leads to a deeper understanding of all aspects of life.

Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : The Quest for Meaning explores the deep-seated human need to create a life that is meaningful. In an effort to understand this need, author William Cooney examines the works of philosophers from Plato to Sartre as well as the insights of artists, poets, writers, psychologists, and film-makers. He discusses the nature of humanness, creation, freedom, and choice, all of which are facets of a meaningful life. Cooney also addresses postmodernism, arguing that it does not offer real guidance for those seeking a life of significance. Maintaining that some ways of creating meaning are preferable to others, he concludes that it is up to each individual to craft a meaningful life and that this process must take place within a context of giving and receiving.

Odysseus, Hero of Practical Intelligence: Deliberation and Signs in Homer's Odyssey

Product : Odysseus, Hero of Practical Intelligence: Deliberation and Signs in Homer's Odyssey
Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : In dramatic representations and narrative reports of inner deliberation the Odyssey displays the workings of the human mind and its hero''s practical intelligence, epitomized by anticipating consequences and controlling his actions accordingly. Once his hope of returning home as husband, father and king is renewed on Calypso''s isle, Odysseus shows a consistent will to focus on this purpose and subordinate other impulses to it. His fabled cleverness is now fully engaged in a gradually emerging plan, as he thinks back from that final goal through a network of means to achieve it. He relies on signs-inferences in the form if this, then that as defined by the Stoic Chrysippus-and the nature of his intelligence is thematically underscored through contrast with others'' recklessness, that is, failure to heed signs or reckon consequences. In Homeric deliberation, the mind is torn between competing options or intentions, not between reason and desire. The lack of distinct opposing faculties and hierarchical organization in the Homeric mind, far from archaic simplicity, prefigures the psychology of Chrysippus, who cites deliberation scenes from the Odyssey against Plato''s hierarchical tri-partite model. From the Stoics, there follows a psychological tradition leading through Hobbes and Leibniz, to Peirce and Dewey. These thinkers are drawn upon to show the significance of the conception of thinking first articulated in the Odyssey. Homer''s work inaugurates an approach that has provoked philosophical conflict persisting into the present, and opposition to pragmatism and Pragmatism can be discerned in prominent critiques of Homer and his hero which are analyzed and countered in this study.

Olivier Py: Four Plays: Theatres, Epistle to Young Actors, The Exaltation of the Labyrinth, Youth

Product : Olivier Py: Four Plays: Theatres, Epistle to Young Actors, The Exaltation of the Labyrinth, Youth
Category : Books>Fiction and Literature
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : This anthology of four plays is the first publication in English of the work of Olivier Py (born in 1965). Excess and a mixture of opposites characterize Py''s dramatic universe, which presents the plight of young people today, searching for meaning in a world devoid of values and rife with violence. The dense poetic language is broken by contemporary colloquialisms, buffoonery punctures the characters'' earnestness, and eroticism complements the preoccupation with spiritual matters. Presenting himself as a Catholic and a homosexual, Py flouts convention and challenges audiences, yet rewards their attention with striking theatricality and a resonance of significance that is unusual in modern theatre. The four works included in this anthology, Theatres, Epistle to Young Actors, The Exaltation of the Labyrinth, and Youth, are particularly suited to university and theatre schools, both for study and for production. Two of the plays were commissions for the French National Conservatory of Dramatic Art. The volume includes introductions, a bibliography and notes, and, as an appendix, an article by Barbara Mason and Susan Mason, reviewing one of Olivier Py''s plays.

What Believers Don't Have To Believe

Product : What Believers Don't Have To Believe
Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : Many books set out the basic doctrines of the Christian faith, the teachings regarded as essential to orthodox Christianity. However, can one be a faithful, biblical Christian and completely disagree with the doctrines that other biblical Christians regard as crucial? How much is one required to believe to maintain Christian orthodoxy, and how much is one not required to believe? Christians often seem to use various doctrines as litmus tests to gauge the maturity and spirituality of fellow Christians. In What Believers Don''t Have to Believe, author Craig Payne uses evidence from the Creeds, Christian history, the scriptures, and philosophy to argue for the invalidity of these litmus tests. In particular, this book focuses on five areas of disagreement: creation, biblical inerrancy, human nature, Christian political involvement, and eschatology. In each of these areas there are equally biblical, logical, and faithful interpretive stances. What Believers Don''t Have to Believe ultimately argues that these disagreements are non-essential and unnecessary, and should be set aside in favor of confessional unity.

Description : This book is a crystallization of author Chong Ho Yu''s contemplation on the meaning of quantitative methods from the perspectives of history and the philosophy of science. Emphasizing the importance of a data analyst ''always knowing where the numbers come from,'' Yu broadens the search to include a gamut of questions exploring the foundations of quantitative research. These questions include: How did the Fisherian and Pearsonian frameworks originate? Is quantitative methodology based upon logical positivism? How could statisticians synthesize abductive, deductive, and inductive methods while they are substantively different in their logics? How could researchers make a causal inference while a strong correlation does not necessarily entail a causal structure? This informative book is written for readers with an intermediate knowledge of statistics and philosophy.

During this time, Jews spread out all over the Diaspora. The turmoil and the lack of visible cohesion have led many scholars to argue that there was no Jewish unity and no distinguishable Jewish identity in this time period. From Around the Globe: Secular Authors and Biblical Perspectives

Product : From Around the Globe: Secular Authors and Biblical Perspectives
Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : From Around the Globe features twenty-six essays from international scholars across various disciplines who explore a broad range of contemporary and cutting-edge connections between the Bible and global literature. The scholars'' fields of study range from classical western literature to multicultural tracts, including a broad variety of literary genres. The scholars use their treatments of literature, criticism, and the Bible to analyze connections among them from a global perspective. Many writers from industrialized nations and the developing world have employed the Bible as an analogue, or have drawn allusions from it to compose their prose, poetry, drama, and other documents. Most often, these authors draw clear references to biblical matter. Other authors are more guarded and camouflaged. Some non-western writers might even be unaware of the allusions they generate, and western writers, while delving into allegorical shadows, may unwittingly layer in biblical references to their works. This collection engages in a reassessment of authors'' biblical references, intentional or unintentional.

Current U.S. immigration policy and the forces of globalization have played a critical role in creating a dynamic process named the ''browning of Oregon.'' This anthology brings together a group of noted multidisciplinary scholars, who explore the rich and varied experiences of Oregon''s native communities and racial minorities. Anchored in a ''power relations'' perspective, the book has been organized around several key historical themes, including: the foundation of ethnic communities; civil rights; social justice; ethnicity and labor; and various forms of cultural traditions. As disparate as they seem in style and topic, this collection of essays highlight the distinctive experiences of Oregon''s people of color and communicates the broader interlocking categories of social identity. The book is essential reading for students, teachers, and the general public interested in contemporary racial politics.

Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : Robert Moore, whose African American identity today may be questioned by some because of his very light skin color, grew up in an all-white suburb of Philadelphia in the 1960s when the push to assimilate was blatant. An examination of the life experiences of people sometimes felt to be at the perimeter, serves to point out that the racial categories of White and Black in America remain strong and impenetrable. The book spans nearly fifty years beginning in the author''s youth to a contemporary period when he is a sociology teacher in a university classroom.

Politics of Hope: A Failed Strategy

Description : Politics of Hope: A Failed Strategy is a true story of a political science professor jumping into the very real political arena. After years of classroom teaching and his concern about individual apathy and ignorance, as well as the electorate''s discontent with the current political system, Professor Tom Caiazzo ran for U.S. House of Representatives in 2002 for District #3 in Texas. Facing a career politician that was an entrenched incumbent, Professor Caiazzo knew that his chances were slim to none. However, with unbridled energy and an unprecedented campaign strategy, Professor Caiazzo offered a campaign of fresh ideas with energy and enthusiasm for all the people. Unfortunately, the local political party and other factors, including the 9/11 tragedy worked against Professor Caiazzo''s desire to shock the world. This book presents his story and an honest, personal look at the inner-workings, institutions, factors, and major players of a federal campaign. Professor Caiazzo''s grassroots effort offered the electorate hope, but in the end hope was a failed strategy.

Understanding Principles of Politics and the State: Revised Edition

Product : Understanding Principles of Politics and the State: Revised Edition
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : Originally published under the title Principles of Politics, this completely revised and updated work is a study in applied political theory. It uses current political society and politics as its backdrop and shows that the nature, authority, origin, and purpose of the state are dictated by fundamental theoretical and practical principles linked to the goals and values of ordinary life. Helpful in the quest for understanding our depictions of the political world by ancient philosophers as well as contemporary political scientists. With detailed examples, Understanding Principles of Politics and the State examines the charge that democracy is a myth, describes the world of academic political science, and belies the cynicism that principles and politics do not go together. An efficient and effective organizing principle is used to explain justice, rights, groups, church and state, federalism, constitutionalism, and even proposals for world government. A brief case study of the Philippines illustrates some basic principles of state building. A preference for presidential over parliamentary government stands at odds with the view of many commentators. The necessity for principles in understanding ubiquitous change ends the book.

Description : This work is a connected series of essays on morality, education, law, and society. Political theorists, social scientists, philosophers, educators, legal scholars, and cultural and literary theorists will find them profitable to study. While the book meets the standards expected by such scholars, its essays are written in a lively and accessible manner, which also makes them of interest to the general educated public. The Contemporary Applications of a Systems Approach to Education: Models for Effective Reform

Product : The Contemporary Applications of a Systems Approach to Education: Models for Effective Reform
Category : Books
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : This work is written through an authentic systems perspective, by five coauthors with diverse expertise in a variety of areas. The contents include past and current roles in k-12 classroom teaching, special education, administration, college teaching, and state education administration. Concrete applications for use in the classrooms are presented, which utilize the systems approach and provides real life experiential strategies for implementing the concepts highlighted in the section. As readers are asked to translate theory into practice, the authors model this effort seamlessly and realistically. For example, the ''Parent-Teacher Communication'' chapter supplies an abundance of promising practices from the individual teacher level, to the school level, to the district-level involvement among the elements of the system. The ''Technology'' chapter discusses the best practices for teaching and learning through technology and highlights examples that are in use in schools today. In the ''Cultural Diversity'' chapter, educators are given case studies and exemplars on how other districts, schools, or individual teachers have integrated diversity in their settings. The text invites the reader to absorb the theoretical aspects and view these through real life applications. The reader easily becomes a participant in the process of creating applications in classrooms through the discussion questions for each chapter, and the vignettes interspersed throughout the book.

The Classic of Way and her Power: a Miscellany?

Product : The Classic of Way and her Power: a Miscellany?
Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : The Classic of Way and her power: a Miscellany? is a study of the profound and influential philosophical writing from early China, traditionally attributed to Lao-zi, the first Daoist thinker. This study provides a translation of the work, but concentrates on analysis. It offers an interpretation of why the traditional work appears to lack order, suggesting that it began as a set of twenty-five philosophical poems by Lao-zi, tightly arranged according to an unusual and unmarked principle of order, and then was added to by later figures in the Daoist tradition who obscured the original order by inserting their passages here and there in the extant text according to a quite different principle of order. Some of these later contributions are in keeping with Lao-zi''s thought and style, while others are at odds in form (prose) and content (shallow) with his poems and their profound insights. This study also offers a commentary by the author, a philosopher, who seeks especially to bring out Lao-zi''s unique insights and to distinguish them from the thoughts being expressed by others in the remainder of the traditional work.

Race and Wealth Disparities: A Multidisciplinary Discourse

Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : Race and Wealth Disparities is a multidisciplinary reader on the subject of race and wealth primarily, yet not exclusively, within the United States. The authors represent a number of social science and humanities'' perspectives from anthropology, economics, education policy, history, literature and law, to management, political science, social psychology and sociology. The authors also represent an attempt to create a dialogue across institutions with four of the authors representing Fisk University, a historically Black University. Because of this unique approach of having authors from ten different disciplines address questions of race and wealth, this study is able to provide substantive information about race and wealth disparities as well as giving the reader a greater and more textured understanding of multidisciplinary work. In this regard, the text models a multidisciplinary conversation in a way that is meant to help others enter into interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary work. The essays came out of a series of workshops between professors from fourteen different disciplines and four different universities, therefore, the essays are meant to explain the disciplines these professors represent as well as to convey and analyze the subject at hand.

Description : In Scripting Identity: Writing Cultural Experience, Theresa Carilli explores how understanding one''s identity can assist in the process of writing a performative script. After a brief review of how the Performance Studies discipline interprets the act of performative writing, Carilli shares her own methodology for creating performative texts. By introducing the concept of the primary narrative-the story that is at the core of one''s identity-the study demonstrates how several of her students at a working-class university campus (surrounded and influenced by a steel mill culture) exemplify how the primary narrative operates in their narrative creations. With the proposed methodology and scripts as examples, Carilli builds dialogue about new ways to study the communication process.

Higher Education as Ignorance: The Contempt of Mexicans in the American Educational System

Product : Higher Education as Ignorance: The Contempt of Mexicans in the American Educational System
Category : Books
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : Higher Education as Ignorance is a perspective not solely of education, but rather a cultural analysis based on the Mexican American. This book looks at the consequences of an Anglo Pedagogy and the clash it imposes on Mexicans who are from the U.S. and hence an American-born population, but are of a different race, culture, and mindset, and still living in Northern Mexico. This book compares and contrasts White and Mexican customs as a parallel story of how the home education of centuries based from a rancho culture is forcefully imposed by utilizing the cultural elements dear to a Mexican such as a mother, food, language, and history. All done in the name of education, but whose culture and edification is being progressed and digressed. The volume does not solely vilify Anglo hegemony, but also it examines the great divide that exists among Mexican Americans and Mexican immigrants that hunger for some form of advancement, are allowed to do so, and then critique America''s Mexicans as if they are to blame alone for their misfortune. Also, a critique of gender and the amalgamation of Latinos is included because for Mexican Americans who are desert U.S. born people to be merged and blended with new immigrants from Central, South America, and the Caribbeans demonstrates the racism visible in society. To piece a U.S. born population albeit desert brown with newcomers from other countries simply because they look the same is another indication of ignorance and blatant racism (that somebody like Julian Camacho even though born in California is still somehow related to people he has never met reveals the truth.) An unwanted population within the U.S.!

Description : Frozen Tears unfolds the events that led to Germany''s military invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941 and explores Germany''s advance on Leningrad and the blockade that was established against the city. This story examines the lives of the city''s inhabitants who suffered from the consequences of the siege that finally ended in 1944. By this time more than one million Leningraders had lost their lives. The lives of public figures are often used by historians to tell the events of the past. The decisions they made and the actions that were taken are discussed and analyzed. However, the experiences of commoners-men, women, and children not mentioned in textbooks-often illustrate better the events of the past. In Frozen Tears, Albert Pleysier has taken the contents of diaries, letters, essays, and interviews written or given by persons who lived in Leningrad during the siege and placed them in their historical setting. The result is a very personal history of the siege of Leningrad.

In 1965, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Immigration and Naturalization Act, which opened America''s doors to immigrants from all over the world. Description : Mika Shindo''s Semantic Extension, Subjectification, and Verbalization focuses on semantic extensions of sensory adjectives originating in perception. The aims of this book are to provide systematic accounts of semantic extensions of sensory adjectives from a cognitive perspective, and to document the validity of an empirical approach, using panchronic and corpus-based methods. This cognitive and usage-based empirical study uncovers cognitive mechanisms underlying linguistic phenomena, since expressions related to perception originally describe the most fundamental human experiences that are frequently utilized for conceptualizing abstract entities, and adjectives especially reflect human construals of situations. This study reveals that each word''s meanings extend in a manner peculiarly restricted by its original cognitive characteristics, firmly rooted in everyday bodily experiences, and that this crucially influences its syntactic structures as well. At the same time, it is a ground-breaking demonstration of the power of computerized corpus research.

Description : This study investigates the procedural techniques, significance, and the tangible effects of the laying on of hands in the New Testament. The author investigates the background of the New Testament practice by conducting investigation in the Old Testament and contemporary Judaism and the Graeco-Roman and Near-Eastern literature. The main chapters are exegetical, each discussing a particular use of the laying on of hands in the New Testament: for blessing, healing, reception of the Spirit and ordination. A special attention is given to the inner process of transfer of power through physical contact. It is the author''s conclusion that in the New Testament the gesture always signifies transfer of some positive materia: blessing, ''life-force'', the Spirit and charismata. In the final section, an attempt is made to gauge the possibility of any uniformity in the significance of the various New Testament uses of the laying on of hands.

Description : This new reading of Paradise Lost concentrates on the analysis of linguistic concepts underlying Milton''s epic, and then builds on those concepts with a fresh interpretation that considers the role that Raphael plays in it. Relying on a narrative model that was already well-known in the seventeenth century and was baptized godgame by the twentieth century British novelist John Fowles, it reinterprets the role of the archangel as that of a tool in the great plan of Milton''s Father''s ironic teaching. This book complements a basically linguistic approach to Milton''s poetry and prose with concepts such as that of retraction adopted from heretical Milton critics as Saurat, Hill, and Empson.

Description : This new reading of Paradise Lost concentrates on the analysis of linguistic concepts underlying Milton''s epic, and then builds on those concepts with a fresh interpretation that considers the role that Raphael plays in it. Relying on a narrative model that was already well-known in the seventeenth century and was baptized godgame by the twentieth century British novelist John Fowles, it reinterprets the role of the archangel as that of a tool in the great plan of Milton''s Father''s ''ironic'' teaching. This book complements a basically linguistic approach to Milton''s poetry and prose with concepts such as that of retraction adopted from ''heretical'' Milton critics as Saurat, Hill, and Empson.

A Twentieth-Century Collision: American Intellectual Culture and Pope John Paul II's Idea of a University

Product : A Twentieth-Century Collision: American Intellectual Culture and Pope John Paul II's Idea of a University
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : A Twentieth-Century Collision explores intellectual culture in the United States during the twentieth century, a topic which cannot be understood without attention to the gradual narrowing of the scope of (academic) philosophy and its diminishing influence. This narrowing signifies a growing indifference to, and elimination of, genuinely metaphysical and prescriptively ethical questions, as well as the bifurcation of faith and reason. American Catholic universities, it is contended in this book, can render a seriously-needed contribution to combating the negative effects of this historical development, one of which is the separation of questions concerning the ultimate meaning of life from rational inquiry. This thesis is pursued by 1) reviewing a highly selective-but also highly representative-sample of pertinent mainstream philosophical principles, and 2) comparing them with principles of Pope John Paul II found in three documents in which he elaborates his views on the nature and role of philosophy (and its relationship to theology) in Catholic higher education. This project is not unrelated to recent, persistent criticism that American Catholic universities have forfeited their identity-and thus their unique contribution to American cultural pluralism.

The Scalping of the Great Sioux Nation: A Review of My Life on the Rosebud and Pine Ridge Reservations

Product : The Scalping of the Great Sioux Nation: A Review of My Life on the Rosebud and Pine Ridge Reservations
Category : Books>Reference and Language
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : The Scalping of the Great Sioux Nation recalls Davis'' early upbringing and education on two Indian reservations. Davis also assesses the policies of the United States government regarding the status of Indians in society. Scalping is not too strong a term to describe the multiple injustices which the Sioux tribes of South Dakota and elsewhere have suffered. The general hate and bigotry which Custer often displayed toward Indians (and blacks) only reflected a similar feeling among many white settlers, presidents, and congressmen. The Indian struggle for survival, self-governance, and sovereignty has met with limited success since the days of the white and Indian massacres. Federal Indian law has changed slightly to accommodate those desires. Casino gaming has added another dimension to the struggle for decent living conditions, but with dubious consequences for the average Indian.

Ecce Educatrix Tua: The Role of the Blessed Virgin Mary for a Pedagogy of Holiness in the Thought of John Paul II and F

Product : Ecce Educatrix Tua: The Role of the Blessed Virgin Mary for a Pedagogy of Holiness in the Thought of John Paul II and F
Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : Ecce Educatrix Tua discusses the Apostolic Letter Novo millennio ineunte (NMI), wherein John Paul II outlined the path the Church should adopt in the third millennium. The necessity to rediscover the full practical significance of Chapter 5 of the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church Lumen Gentium, dedicated to the universal call to holiness (NMI 30) is at stake. John Paul II stressed that a concrete pedagogy of holiness is required, including a spiritual path, without which external structures.will serve very little purpose (NMI 43). The Polish Pontiff invited ecclesial movements to present their original pedagogy of holiness (cf. NMI 31). Peters highlights the Blessed Virgin Mary as educator in a pedagogy of holiness from the teachings of John Paul II and Father Joseph Kentenich, founder of the Schoenstatt Movement.

The Land of Israel: Its Theological Dimensions

Product : The Land of Israel: Its Theological Dimensions
Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : The claim of the Jewish people to the Land of Israel is long established - and long challenged. Most Jews, and non-Jews, asked to explain their relationship with the actual physical territory of Israel, will offer some vague reference to God''s promise, or historical right, or the place as Holy Land. Even the Bible and some of its commentaries often present varied and contradictory perspectives about Israel and the Land. This fact, added to the confusion that accompanies conflicting theological and political perceptions, results in the claims and counterclaims that have led to continuing tension and confrontation among current peoples. In this book, Dr. Shechter steps forth into the ideological quicksand that surrounds the entire question of the relationship between God, the Jewish people, and the Land of Israel. This is a matter that Christians and Muslims, as well, are deeply preoccupied with as it relates to their own domains. The author explores in detail the perplexing issues that flow from the triad of God, Israel, and the Land. His analyses are rooted in the Biblical and rabbinic texts themselves, in addition to other scholarly disciplines impinging on the subject. Among others, the basic questions wrestled within this work include: -What are the theological and historical prisms through which the land of Israel is viewed? -What are the ramifications implicit in the notion that the land was promised? -What does a tradition have in mind when it designates a place - and Israel''s place - as holy? -What has all this to do with the claims, conflicts, and confrontations that roil the Middle East in our time? A set of pointed questions prompted by the explorations in the work is included to assist in considering contemporary implications. This is a book that promises to bring clarity to issues of great moment - both in the past and in our time.

The 2008 Election in Florida: Change! But Only at the Top of the Ticket

Product : The 2008 Election in Florida: Change! But Only at the Top of the Ticket
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies>Political Science
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 3
Description : During 2008, the Democrats achieved in Florida a goal that had eluded them in all but three of the national elections since 1964: victory in the presidential race. Despite this success, the Republicans retained their dominance in the U.S. Congress and in the Florida State Legislature. The 2008 Elections in Florida utilizes multiple types of data to provide an explanation for the disparate outcomes of these elections. The book chronicles changes in voter registration and turnout over time and compares the electoral behavior of groups in Florida to that in the nation as a whole. It examines the importance of legislative apportionment, term limits and incumbency to the outcome of congressional and state legislative races and provides important clues to the future of electoral behavior in one of the nation''s most important states.
