This day the Eleven got the Twenty two out for 39 runs, themselves only losing two wickets for 35 runs. On i SATURDAY, October 22, no play took place, owing to a heavy fall of snow, but a game of baseball was got up among the players of that game and a portion of the English party, and which took place on the base-ball ground, about a mile from the cricket ground. The latter is situated about two miles from the town, and had been enclosed at a great expense, for the occasion. The base-ball game is somewhat similar to the English game of rounders, as played by school-boys; but the judgment displayed by the base-ball players was especially conspicuous over that of the English cricketers, who, no doubt, however, would soon have been able to compete with their more experienced opponents at their own game. Caffyn played exceedingly well, but the English thought catching the ball theirs bound a very childish game. SUNDAY, October 23. The whole of the party made a trip of 140 miles to the Niagara Falls and back, where they spent the Sunday, and were thus enabled to repair their previous disappointment by visiting the Falls on the Cana1 dian side. The Falls may be justly classed among the wonders of the world. They are the pride of America, and unequalled in magnitude and grandeur by any. other known cataract. It is impossible to describe the delightwith which the Eleven gazed upon that tumultuous crash of water. The Horse Shoe, or Canadian Fall, is 2000 feet wide, and 154 feet high. The roar of the Falls can, it is said, be heard occasionally at a distance of twenty miles, but that must, of course, depend upon the direction and st...

The Doctrine that free bottoms make free goods, is in direct opposition to the ancient Law, that war gives the Belligerent a right to seize the goods of his Enemy, wherever he meets with them without the Territory of his friends; but as war does not give to the Belligerent a Right to seize the goods of his friends, is he not required by the principles of Justice to agree in such equitable Regulations, as by distinguishing the goods of a friend from those of an Enemy, shall secure his friend from the injuries to which he otherwise might be exposed, and does not the courtesy and mutual convenience of nations engage them to respect each other''s word in matters of equal or superior moment? Some Americans recently arrived from France, and who pretend to know what is passing between our Envoys & the French Government, state that the negotiation a few days ago was on the point of breaking off, but that it has been resumed & may yet attain a satisfactory termination; tho'' I am not able from any information I have on the subject to appreciate the credit due tothis Report, the continuance of the Envoys at Paris gives me hopes that they will not return without finishing the business of the Mission. Having heard of the capture of several of our vessels by British Cruizers both in the American and European seas under pretence of a breach of the blockade of Cadiz, I wrote a note to Lord Grenville on the loth of July representing this interruption of our Trade, and observing that while Lord St. Vincent commanded before Cadiz, and the Spanish Fleet was in that Port, our Ships, tho'' strictly visited, were...

Description : Excerpt: ...him. They strolled along together. Beautiful country to walk through, said Milford. That''s no lie, said the tramp. But all countries are about the same when times are hard, I should think, Milford remarked. That''s no pipe, said the tramp. They tell us, however, that we are to have better times. They are smokin'', said the tramp. Their roads separated, and they parted company. The sun was down when Milford reached the village. It was an easy matter to find Mulligan''s saloon. One of the oldest citizens pointed it out. Mulligan was half-dozing behind his bar. Several men were at a table, playing cards. Milford made short work of his introduction. He told his story. There was but one way to get even. Mulligan laughed. That sort of revenge appealed to his Irish heart. He would give lessons, and it should not cost a cent. He put out his whisky bottle. His face beamed. He was glad to meet a civilized man. The very fact that Milford had come on such a mission was a proof of an improvement in the country. Dorsey, he said. Dorsey. He can''t box; I never heard of him. Well, we''ll make a jelly out of his face. They went out to supper together. This man has heard of me and has come miles to get lessons, said Mulligan to the tavern keeper. They boxed till late at night and shook hands Pg 141 warmly at parting. Earnestness is genius, and when Milford set out for home, the moon on his right shoulder, he felt that he had made surprising progress. It was nearly daylight when he reached the end of his journey. The hired man was going out to the barn. You are born to be a great man, said Mitchell. The cards are shuffled and cut that way and you can''t help it. What are you goin'' to do now? I''m going to sleep for a few hours and then get to work. When are you goin'' to take another lesson? Day after to-morrow. Ain''t that feller a bird? He understands his business. About when do you think you can tackle your job again? Not till I have...

Description : Excerpt: ...waiter was dressed in an informal costume, with his shirt-sleeves rolled up and a mulatto apron about his waist, but he smiled genially when he took my order and was back with it in two minutes. The article itself was of the regulation size, cut somewhat thinner, perhaps, and bordering on the gray in hue, but undoubtedly roast beef. It, too, had an affinity for its own gravy and hid itself modestly under an avalanche of mashed potatoes. A cup of coffee was also included in the ten cents'' initial expense, but I somehow wasn''t coffee-thirsty that night, and so didn''t sample it. But I did help myself to the plate piled high with fresh bread which was left in front of me. All in all, it was what I should call a representative roast beef dinner. And I got more than ten cents'' worth of calories, I know. But so far I had kept below the Fourteenth Street belt in my investigations. Roast beef is a cosmopolitan habit, and knows no arbitrary boundaries; so I went uptown. Into one of the larger of our largest hotels, one which is not so near the Grand Central Station as to be in the train-shed, and yet not so far removed from it as to be represented by a different Assemblyman. Here, I felt, would be the test. Could roast beef come back? Surrounded by glittering chandeliers and rich tapestries, snowy table linen and silver service, here was the chance for the ordinary roast beef to become a veritable dainty, with some character, some distinctive touch that should lift it above all that roast beef has ever meant before. I entered the dining-room, in high hopes. Clad in a walking suit of virile tweed, I considered myself respectably dressed. Not ostentatiously respectable, mind you, but, since most of the other diners were in evening dress, rather distingué, I thought. But apparently the hotel retainers weren''t trained to look through a rough exterior and find the sterling qualities beneath. They looked through my rough exterior all right, but they didn''t stop at...

On the 22d, the Federals pressed forward to occupy the works from which the Confederates had seemed to retreat, and the latter saw themselves hoist with their own petard by the reversal of these defences. But the retreat had been only a ruse; the advance of the Federals was not to be unopposed. As their line was being gradually extended to encompass the doomed city, there came to the ears of Gen. Morgan L. Smith and his staff, first, a few scattering shots; then a heavier rattle of musketry; then a succession of volleys, followed by the deeper roar of artillery. As yet the attack thus indicated was on the extreme left, but it would soon be upon the whole line. The outposts were ordered in, and the pickets retreated hastily, followed closely by the advance of the enemy. Various were the reports which the frightened soldiers gave, but all agreed that the enemy was in full force....

Description : This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1904 edition. Excerpt: ... encaustic painting Encaustic is a term applied to a mode of painting in which the medium is wax, which was generally mixed with the colours, the final process being the inustion or Kavcru, the application of heat, to fuse the colours together. The wax most frequently mentioned as used by the painters of antiquity is Punic wax, which was merely wax bleached. The process as described by Dioscorides and Pliny was to expose yellow wax to the air, and then boil it in sea-water to which nitre had been added: the whitest part was taken out with spoons and put into a pot of cold water. It was again boiled in sea-water and again put into cold water. After doing this three times it was dried on rushes in the open air either by sun or moonlight. There were several kinds of encaustic--in the first sticks of coloured wax resins, which were melted by means of heat, were used; in the second they were used cold, softened by the addition of oil, like pastels, and were afterwards worked with heat; and in a third the wax colours were probably used dissolved in an essential oil and applied with a brush. The implements required were--first, a colour box with coloured wax pencils; second, a little stove to melt the wax; third, brushes; fourth, instruments of metal, either iron or bronze, having the form of a spatula and called technically cestrum and generically cauteria. In 1847, at S. M4dard-des-PrPSs in Vendue, some utensils and materials for encaustic painting were found in a tomb. These consisted of a bronze colour-box, several bronze spatulas (cestra), two instruments of rock crystal, one of which contained gold powder mixed with a gummy substance, two brush handles, a palette made of basalt, and several glass bottles and phials filled with...

Description : This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1898 edition. Excerpt: ...Although the pagan gods were human in their extrinsic and intrinsic form, only differing from mortals by their mighty privileges, yet they were personally distinct from men, and while the acts of Olympus mingled with those of earth, they had an habitation and destinies apart. But by the new dogma, the one God who was a Spirit took on him the substance of man and was united with humanity as a whole, according to the Pauline interpretation, which was generally accepted by our race. The divine nature was continually imparted to man, the body and members in which the divine spirit was incarnated, since the Church or mystical community of Christians was the temple of God. Through this lively sense of the divine incarnation, the Christian avatar with which the race had been acquainted under other forms, God was no longer essentially distinguished from mankind in the form of a number of concrete beings, but was spiritually infused into men and acted through them. The Christian as man felt himself to be a participator with God himself by a mystic intercourse. Since, therefore, the human faculty was historically identical with the divine, and shared in the spiritual work which was to effect the redemption of society, this new and Christian civilization added daring, confidence, and virtue to the natural energy of the race. Not many years elapsed before men ceased to contemplate the immediate end of the world predicted by the first apostles and the Apocalypse; they looked forward to a more distant future, and except in the case of some particular sects, they applied the prophecies which referred to the first generation of Christians to the future history of the race. It was therefore Christianity which introduced into the consciousness of our...

Excerpt: ...vinum; see note on i. 20. 9. 6. avitis: the epithet is transferred from the wine to the storerooms, dum... parabat: dum with the imperfect indicative occurs only here in Horace; we should naturally have expected the present. Capitolio regina: the abomination of a regina menacing the central sanctuary of Rome is finely emphasized by the juxtaposition of the two contrasted ideas. Such juxtaposition is a common rhetorical device, in prose as well as in poetry; another fine example is found in iii. 5. 9, sub rege Medo Marsus et Apulus. To the Romans, the very names rex and regina had been odious since the days of the Tarquins. Horace, also, doubtless means to suggest that Cleopatra, as an Oriental sovereign, contemplated supplanting the worship of the Capitoline deities (Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva) by introducing native Egyptian rites. She was, at all events, reputed to have made frequent boasts that she would issue her sovereign decrees from the Capitol. 7. dementis ruinas: bold transfer of the epithet from regina to ruinas. 8. funus et: for et in the second place, c/. i. 2. 9, piscium et summa; the order is frequent in the poets. 9. contaminato grege: the allusion is to the eunuchs of Cleopatra''s court, sarcastically alluded to as viri. 10. morbo: with turpium,--foul with disease. quidlibet: any scheme of glory and conquest, however visionary. impotens sperare: mad enough to hope; the infinitive as in i. 1. 18, indocilis pauperiem pati. 13. viz una sospes navis ab ignibus: the grammatical subject of minuit is navis, but the logical subject is the idea contained in the whole phrase, = the rescue of scarcely a single ship from the flames; cf. i. 15. 33, iracunda classis Achillei, with note; ii. 4. 10, ademptus Hector. Not illustrated. 1855 edition. Excerpt: ... Irish Acts relating to fishing, and substitute others now in force in England; the bill, however, does not appear to have been followed up. A company is now forming in Dublin, it is said, with a large capital, which is to be employed in deep sea fishing on the western coast, and, it is to be hoped, with better success than others which have preceded it. Mines And Minerals.--The unexplored treasures which the land of Ireland contains have been as much neglected as those of the sea that circulates round its coast. Although gold, silver, lead, copper, and other metals were early discovered on the island, no encouragement was given through many a dark and turbulent age of its history by the great landed proprietors to seek after mines; or, if accidentally discovered on their estates, to work them. The public mind was always impressed with the idea that gold existed in the country to a considerable extent, and the discovery of nuggets and particles of that metal occasionally picked up in the Wicklow mountains, and towards the end of the last century, by the peasantry in the streams of the Kinsela mountain, to the extent of PS10,000, were calculated to confirm it. The government, on ascertaining that gold had been discovered to some extent in the latter place, took possession of the district, and appointed agents to superintend the works; but, after two years operations, all that was collected amounted to only 945 ounces, which sold for PS3,675, while the expense of the establishment was considerably more; the property was given up in consequence, and although subsequently leased to a London company, the pursuit was finally abandoned. It was not until within the last half century that any progress was made in mining operations in the...

Some of the wise men of the west say that man is the culmination of and latest development of an ape. There may be races, or even individuals of all races, of whom this may be said, or at least suspected. The Eden race does not answer to this type. In whatever way plastic matter was molded, it fitted the needs of pure spirits. The Elohim said: Let us make man in our own image (plural), male and female created he them. Eve is said to emerge from her husband''s side, symbolic of their deep interior union,--bone of his bone, flesh of his flesh,--twain in form as made visible in mortality, but one in spirit. It was the union of the Infinite with flesh, for a specific and determined purpose. They were one in divine essence, even as those who are sanctified are one with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ; heaven was around them, they came fresh from immortality. Woman then walked side by side with man, without subjection and without fear. They had simple love and confidence in the powers above, whose they were. There was no need of rite or ritual. Angelic beings walked and talked with man,--and there has remained in the hearts of all peoples a longing for and dim remembrance of that far-off time. I find no cause for my infinite desires and prophetic aspirations, within the breast of particled matter. I am belittled and confounded and indignant, when I hear ape-hood claimed as my origin. Can the fountain rise higher than the source? Let those who claim an apish origin content themselves with their ancestry, and make the best of it. I do not admit it for myself. As a child of Seth, I am a descendant of the Eden rac...

Fourth Edition, Small 8vo, Cloth, 4s. 64, OUR FRIENDS IN HEAVEN; OR, THE MUTUAL RECOGNITION OF THE REDEEMED IN GLORY DEMONSTRATED. By the ReT. J. M. Kiilen, M.A., Comber. OPINIONS OF THE PRESS. Here is a subject of touching interest very well treated. Mr. Kiilen argues on right principles and comes to a right conclusion. He examines very carefully all the proofs which Scripture affords, and shews how they uniformly tend to assure that there will be mutual recognition in the eternal world. This book will prove a great consolation to those whose beloved friends have passed before them into God''s presence.--Church of England Magazine. Mr. Kiilen has not indulged in any fanciful or dream-like speculations on a subject where affection is too prone to assume the command, and to dismiss reason from her post On the contrary, be has appealed to ... the Word of the Eternal; and the result is an amount of edifying instruction for which few perhaps are prepared. ... A variety of subjects, some of which have rarely been discussed before. The character of the volume is pre-eminently that of scriptural sobriety. . . . We can predict that many a reader will be surprised, after tbe perusal of this volume, that there could ever be a question at all as to the recognition of departed saints in glory. We cannot doubt that it will tend to the consolation and the soothing of many a wounded spirit,--Witness. A full, earnest, able, and conclusive investigation of the entire subject. We can most cordially recommend this book, both to those who believe the doctrine, but may be the better for considering its present uses; and to those who nee...

Description : This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1922 edition. Excerpt: ... III. HOW HE APPEALED TO THE CHURCH IT IS the Christian writers, the early Fathers of the growing Christian Church, who elevate Seneca into prominence as more than a man of affairs or an author of questionable style. When the new religion has ceased to be a secret ritual and has risen superior to the worship of Jupiter Capitolinus, we find that the subject of this sketch is as warmly welcomed as he was formerly abused. But it is for a different reason. The leaders of the Church were less interested in a way of saying things than in the thing to be said; they were desirous of winning over as many educated converts as possible to the new faith. In Seneca they discovered a thinker who struck to the root of their problem, whose language and traditions appealed to them as citizeins both of Rome and of the City not built with hands. East and West could meet through the message of such an interpreter, especially along religious lines. The lapse of time had wiped out cliques in literature and politics; the lasting qualities of the man were all that mattered; and at this point the criterion became one of religion and religion only, for several centuries. St. Jerome himself had said: If you read all the books of the philosophers you cannot help finding in them some part of the vessels of God. 8 But Seneca was placed above Cicero in this category. The reasons for this are not far to seek. Seneca was a Stoic, and Stoicism was the porch to Christianity. Then, as now, it was the thought-force that lay nearest to our inspirational religion. It was Stoicism which made the Christian fathers claim Seneca as one of their own, which made St. Paul quote Aratus to the Athenians as one in whom we live and move and have our being. There is Stoicism in the...

Description : Excerpt: ...a Russian the image of his saint, and he has never got over his awe of champagne. To drink Monopole at dinner is to mount a pedestal of dignity, and I completely recovered his esteem by drowning 209 the memories of that awful marine experience in a pint of ''dry.'' When he draws the champagne cork he has a sacerdotal air, and he pours out the foaming liquid with the obsequiousness of an archbishop placing on his sovereign''s head the crown he may never hope to do more than touch. But perhaps the best proof of the humbleness of his origin is his veneration for the aristocracy. An average waiter is, from the nature of his occupation, liable to be brought into contact with the bluest of blood, and to have his undiminished 210 reverence for it tempered with a good-natured perception of mortal foibles. But Jones''s attitude is one of awestruck unquestioning worship. He speaks of a lord with bated breath, and he dare not, even in conversation, ascend to a duke. THE ONLY JONES. It would seem that this is not one of the hotels which the aristocrat''s fancy turns to thoughts of; for apparently only one lord has ever stayed here, judging by the frequency with which Jones whispers his name. Though some of us seem to have a beastly lot of money, and to do all the year round what Merton and I can only indulge in for a month, we are a rather plebeian company I fear, and it is simply overwhelming the way Jones rams Lord Porchester down our throats. ''When his lordship stayed here he partic''larly admired the view from that there window.'' ''His lordship wouldn''t drink anything but Pommery Green-oh; he used to swallow it by tumblersful, as you or I might rum-and-water, sir.'' ''Ah, sir! Lord Porchester hired the Mayblossom all to himself, and often said: By Jove! she''s like a sea-gull. She almost comes near my own little beauty. I think I shall have to buy her, by gad I shall! and let them race each other.'' And the fellow is such an inveterate gossip that...

CHAPTER IV FLIGHT HALF an hour later the posse was grouped about the dead fire and the sheriff was staring at a blood-stained blanket. There has been trouble, he said abruptly. Then he turned on Gallon. Why is this coffee hot? he said, lifting up the pot. The brusque tones of the sheriff cut the silence that followed. I don''t see your man. I don''t understand this. You are under arrest--for the murder of He looked at Gallon, and the old man involuntarily said: Wilkerson. A lizard, swiftly tracing its strange script on a bowlder, weaving in and out in that marvelous and mysterious way which our primal animals have, suddenly paused and lifted up its throbbing throat. It was the only living creature that knew that another being, near death, was creeping up the bank toward the edge of the mesa. It flickered away, leaving no trace on the solid rock. Wilkerson saw this creature and knew, even in his feverish delirium, that he had been seen. It comforted him, for he was a man that could not stand solitude, and the presence of the lizard and the recognition by that evasive, swift glance, gave him new strength. But behind him was Gallon. He had heard the posse go by. He had dimly seen a figure that was that of his partner--grim, stolid, taciturn and murderous. In his cowardly heart he resolved that he would follow the habit of all animals in the desert and secrete himself. But ... I know . . . he muttered to himself. All day the sheriff with Gallon, his arms pinioned behind him, searched the gullies and gulches for the man whose blood-stained blanket they had found. The old man, taciturn as ever, merely said, as if repeating by rote, The outlaws got him! When the full moon had risen, and the night life of the desert had begun--grotesque activity built of fleeting forms and bizarre...

In the second part he goes on to show that---. to produce such an experience as ours, the categories must be applied to the manifold under the forms of time and space, and he is thus led to consider the imagination as the faculty that intermediates between understanding and sense. Sense in-In the first place, then, we start with the question, capable of r _. i p yntheu..What beyond perceptions of sense is required for knowledge or experience? The manifold that is in our ideas can be presented in sense, if we regard sense as merely receptive of impressions. Further, in receiving impressions, sense may modify them by its own forms. But there is one thing that is impossible for sense, and that is to combine the manifold matter so presented. As merely receptive of impressions, sense cannot bind them together. To bring about that result it is necessary that the mind, which receives impressions in their isolated multiplicity, should react upon them. For synthesis, not only the receptivity of sense, but also the spontaneity of the understanding is required. Wherever, as in all our ideas of objects, there is a combination of manifold and different elements, there there is an act of synthesis by the understanding. We can represent nothing as combined in the object, unless by our own mental activity we have combined it; and of all our ideas, synthesis is the only one that cannot be given or impressed upon us from without, but must be produced by the self-activity of the subject. Wherever we find unity, in.difference, or the combination of various elements under one conception, there we trace the activity of the understanding. If there is room for analysis, there must...

All of the four blocks are well trimmed off and their surfaces levelled, being quite regular in their form and size and trimmed to proper measurement. The end blocks serving to sustain the greatest amount of strain longitudinally, are also found well finished, in contrast with so many seen in instruments by makers of eminence that are simply hacked roughly into size and shape. They were carefully estimated in their proportion for strength sufficient to resist the strain caused by the size, length, and pull of the strings in use at the time of Stradivari, and with something to spare, so that even now, under 46 the enormous strain of the modern high pitch, when in perfect and original condition they are equal to their task. In a number of instances, when much repairing, good or bad has been done, the end, and often the corner blocks, have been replaced by modern ones. There is, of course, under these circumstances less of Stradivari present, but it has often been a case of painful necessity or question of expense as to the choice between two steps for restoration to health and particularly for strength. The form viewed vertically adopted by Stradivari was that of a parallelogram with two rounded corners (diag. i.). The upper block was left a little thicker, the junction or root of the neck necessitating this. The renewal of one or both of these has also been caused incidentally by the deep insertion of the modern and longer neck, thus lessening much of the grip or purchase of the block on both upper and lower table. The same may be said of the nut over which the tail string passes, this being

Dr. Edkins, in a paper written for an Oriental Congress, has given us the following account of a conversation he held with a Buddhist priest sixty years of age, of good repute as a learned scholar, and reported to be the best-read monk in either of the eight monasteries which are found together in one nook of the western hills, ten miles from Peking. Do you think there is a future life or not? We neither say there is or is not. Do not some men at death become sheep, and others, horses? I do not say they will. There is one thing that is really important. It is good conduct, good morality. Virtuous conduct, he added, is the basis of all religion. As for dogmas, they are true for those who accept them. What then of Nirvana, is it death or something different from death? No, he said, it is not death, for it signifies the absence of birth and death. What is your view of the dogma of the non-reality of existing things? Things are proved, he said, to be not real by their destructibility. You burn them, they are reduced to ashes. You say you are an Englishman: you think of England and you are there. There is no reality in your thought. You are deluded if you think there is reality in it. He was very distinct, Dr. Edkins continues, on the point that definite belief is a fault. It is sticking to form. It is cho yii siang was his expression. This is literally sticking to form. The moment you form ideas too pronounced on the existence of a future life, or the Nirvana, or on the non-reality of existing things, you cease to become a consistent Buddhist. This priest belonged to the Lin-tsi branch of ...

Herschel I. adopted, with great success, a trough containing a filtered mixture of ink and water. Cooper, at Markree Castle, Ireland, used a * drum'' of alum water and dark spectacles, and could thus endure the whole aperture, 13-- inches, of his 25-foot achromatic.1 With large apertures, a plane surface of unsilvered glass placed diagonally, as originally suggested by Herschel II., so as to reflect only a small fraction of the light and heat, is found of eminent service. Merz, of Munich, has so reduced the light by polarisation at four such surfaces, that a dark glass, the tint of which is of course better dispensed with, becomes unnecessary; and the same end is attained in a very ingenious double-prism eye-piece devised by Prof. Pickering: neither apparatus, however, is free from accidental colour.2 An eye-piece constructed by Andrews with two lenses of complementary tints, burnished in loosely to avoid fracture from expansion, has succeeded with a small aperture. In screen-glasses combinations of colour are good. Bed succeeds perfectly with green, or with green and blue. Herschel II. used green and cobalt blue.3 A Barlow lens, carefully silvered, is said to act admirably, though a light screen might still be necessary. If there is to be only one solar cap, deep bluish-grey, or neutral tint, will be quite satisfactory; if several, it would be worth 1 Not, however, an example to be imitated. Dawes thought that with a focus of 30 inches, 2 inches of aperture were enough for perfect security. A 4J-inch silvered mirror is not safe for screen-glasses. 2 An unsilvered glass mirror has been found an excellent instrument for solar observation.--(P.) * The value of complementary, or at any ...

A wide rhythmic undulating movement from above downwards, and from below upwards, an undulation recalling the malignant sweep of the wings of a vulture seeking its prey; at times an indescribably revolting grovelling on the earth, as of a spider stooping over its captured fly.... Who are you, what are you, menacing mass? Under her influence, I saw it, I felt it--all sank into nothingness, all was dumb.... A putrefying, pestilential chill came from it. At this chill breath the heart turned sick, and the eyes grew dim, and the hair stood up on the head. It was a power moving; that power which there is no resisting, to which all is subject, which, sightless, shapeless, senseless, sees all, knows all, and like a bird of prey picks out its victims, like a snake, stifles them and stabs them with its frozen sting.... ''Alice! Alice!'' I shrieked like one in frenzy. ''It is death! death itself!'' The wailing sound I had heard before broke from Alice''s lips; this time it was more like a human wail of despair, and we flew. But our flight was strangely and alarmingly unsteady; Alice turned over in the air, fell, rushed from side to side like a partridge mortally wounded, or trying to attract a dog away from her young. And meanwhile in pursuit of us, parting from the indescribable mass of horror, rushed sort of long undulating tentacles, like outstretched arms, like talons.... Suddenly a huge shape, a muffled figure on a pale horse, sprang up and flew upwards into the very heavens.... Still more fearfully, still more desperately Alice struggled. ''She has seen! All is over! I am lost!'' I heard her broken whisper. ''Oh, I am miserable! I might have profited, have won life,... and now.... Nothingness, nothingness!'' It was too...

Description : Excerpt: ...one conclusion.82 That kind of faith which Dr. Wace describes and lauds is of no use here. Indeed, he himself takes pains to destroy its evidential value. What made the Mahommedan world? Trust and faith in the declarations and assurances of Mahommed. And what made the Christian world? Trust and 333 faith in the declarations and assurances of Jesus Christ and His Apostles (l. c. p. 253). The triumphant tone of this imaginary catechism leads me to suspect that its author has hardly appreciated its full import. Presumably, Dr. Wace regards Mahommed as an unbeliever, or, to use the term which he prefers, infidel; and considers that his assurances have given rise to a vast delusion which has led, and is leading, millions of men straight to everlasting punishment. And this being so, the Trust and faith which have made the Mahommedan world, in just the same sense as they have made the Christian world, must be trust and faith in falsehood. No man who has studied history, or even attended to the occurrences of everyday life, can doubt the enormous practical value of trust and faith; but as little will he be inclined to deny that this practical value has not the least relation to the reality of the objects of that trust and faith. In examples of patient constancy of faith and of unswerving trust, the Acta Martyrum do not excel the annals of Babism.83 The discussion upon which we have now entered goes so thoroughly to the root of the whole matter; the question of the day is so completely, as the author of Robert Elsmere says, the value of testimony, that I shall offer no apology for following it out somewhat in detail; and, by way of giving substance to the 334 argument, I shall base what I have to say upon a case, the consideration of which lies strictly within the province of natural science, and of that particular part of it known as the physiology and pathology of the nervous system. I find, in the second Gospel (chap. v.), a statement, to all...

O be ye therefore comforted, my children: though each must die, yet to the pure in heart death is none so hard-- Thus spake Friar Martin, shivering in his bonds, what time the crowd rocked and swayed, sobbing aloud and groaning; whereat Sir Gui''s pikemen made lusty play with their spear-shafts. Then spake Beltane, whispering, to Roger, who, sweating with impatience, groaned and stared and gnawed upon his fingers: Away, Roger! And on the instant Roger had turned, and with brawny shoulders stooped, drove through the swaying press and was gone. Now with every moment the temper of the crowd grew more threatening; voices shouted, fists were clenched, and the scowling pike-men, plying vicious spear-butts, cursed, and questioned each other aloud: Why tarries Sir Gui? Hereupon a country fellow hard by took up the question: Sir Gui! he shouted, Why cometh not Sir Gui? Aye! cried others, where tarries Sir Gui? Why doth he keep us? Where tarries Sir Gui? Here! roared a voice deep and harsh, Way--make way! And suddenly high above the swaying crowd rose the head and shoulders of a man, a mighty man in the dusty habit of a miller, upon whose low-drawn hood and be-floured smock were great gouts and stains evil and dark; and now, beholding what manner of stains these were, all men fell silent and blenched from his path. Thus amid a lane of pallid faces that stared and shrank away, the tall miller came unto the wondering pike-men--burst their ranks and leapt upon the dais where stood the gilded chair. Ho! soldiers and men-at-arms--good people of Belsaye--call ye for Gui in sooth? hunger ye for sight of Bloody Gui of Allerdale in faith? Why then--behold! and from under his be-dabbled...

He was to have taken a long journey over the mountains, and beyond the sea; men often lose their lives in travelling, as he has done! He will never come back again, and my sister dares not question me about him. So he shoved with his foot some withered leaves over the upturned earth, and then walked home amid the shades of night. But he did not go alone, as he imagined; the tiny Elf went with him, sitting rolled up in a withered lime-leaf, which had fallen into the wicked man''s hair while he was digging the grave. The man put on his hat, and then it was so dark for our little Elf, who was underneath, trembling with horror and indignation at the shameful deed he had witnessed. By the morning the wicked man had reached his home; he took off his hat, and went into his sister''s sleeping-room; the bright and beautiful girl lay dreaming of him whom she loved so well, and who, she imagined, was now wandering far away across mountain and forest. Her wicked brother bent over her with a hideous, devilish smile, the withered leaf fell out of his hair upon the counterpane, but he did not notice it, and went away, intending to sleep a little while himself. The Elf now glided out of the withered leaf, crept into the ear of the sleeping girl, and told her, as though in a dream, all about the horrible murder of her lover; he described to her the spot where her brother had buried the corpse, close under the lime-tree, and added, In token that all I have told thee is not a mere dream, thou shalt find a withered leaf upon thy bed, when thou awakest! Oh, what bitter tears she shed when she awoke and actually found the withered lime-leaf on her bed! but she dared not speak ...

Curious myths of the middle ages

Description : Excerpt: ...then, of Pg 127 the mother of Napoleon with the Greek Leto and the Latin Latona, is established conclusively. 4. According to the popular story, this son of Letitia had three sisters; and was it not the same with the Greek deity, who had the three Graces? 5. The modern Gallic Apollo had four brothers. It is impossible not to discern here the anthropomorphosis of the four seasons. But, it will be objected, the seasons should be females. Here the French language interposes; for in French the seasons are masculine, with the exception of autumn, upon the gender of which grammarians are undecided, whilst Autumnus in Latin is not more feminine than the other seasons. This difficulty is therefore trifling, and what follows removes all shadow of doubt. Of the four brothers of Napoleon, three are said to have been kings, and these of course are, Spring reigning over the flowers, Summer reigning over the harvest, Autumn holding sway over the fruits. And as these three seasons owe all to the powerful influence of the Sun, we are told in the popular myth that the three brothers of Napoleon drew their authority from him, and received from him their kingdoms. But if it be added that, of the four Pg 128 brothers of Napoleon, one was not a king, that was because he is the impersonification of Winter, which has no reign over anything. If, however, it be asserted, in contradiction, that the winter has an empire, he will be given the principality over snows and frosts, which, in the dreary season of the year, whiten the face of the earth. Well, the fourth brother of Napoleon is thus invested by popular tradition, commonly called history, with a vain principality accorded to him in the decline of the power of Napoleon. The principality was that of Canino, a name derived from cani, or the whitened hairs of a frozen old age,

And while the Pony moves his legs, In Johnny''s left hand you may see, The green bough''s motionless and dead: The Moon that shines above his head Is not more still and mute than he. Description : Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos.Excerpt from book:THE RELIGIOUS LIFE. The Double Contest Against Evil.?If an evil afflicts us we can either so deal with it as to remove its cause or else so deal with it that its effect upon our feeling is changed; hence look upon the evil as a benefit of which the uses will perhaps first become evident in some subsequent period. Religion and art (and also the metaphysical philosophy) strive to effect an alteration of the feeling, partly by an alteration of our judgment respecting the experience (for example, with the aid of the dictum whom God loves, he chastizes) partly by the awakening of a joy in pain, in emotion especially (whence the art of tragedy had its origin). The more one is disposed to interpret away and justify, the less likely he is to look directly at the causes of evil and eliminate them. An instant alleviation and narcotizing of pain, as is usual in the case of tooth ache, is sufficient for him even in the severest suffering. The more the domination of religions and of all narcotic arts declines, the more searchingly do men look to the elimination of evil itself, which is a rather bad thing for the tragic poets?for there is ever less and less material for tragedy, since the domain of unsparing, immutable destiny grows constantly more circumscribed ? and a still worse thing for the priests, for these last have lived heretofore upon the narcoticizing of human ill. Sorrow is Knowledge.?How willingly would not one exchange the false assertions of the homines religiosi that there is a god who commands us to be good, who is the sentinel and witness of every act, every moment, every thought, who loves us, who plans our welfare in every misfortune?how willingly would not one exchange these for truths as healing, beneficial and grateful as those delusions! But there are no s...

Not illustrated. Excerpt: ... ii. jon A than ed wards Two of the ablest thinkers whom America has yet produced were born in New England at the beginning of the eighteenth century. The theorists who would trace all our characteristics to inheritance from some remote ancestor might see in Jonathan Edwards and Benjamin Franklin normal representatives of the two types from which the genuine Yankee is derived. Though blended in various proportions, and though one may exist almost to the exclusion of the other, an element of shrewd mother-wit and an element of transcendental enthusiasm are to be detected in all who boast a descent from the Pilgrim Fathers. Franklin, born in 1706, represents in its fullest development the more earthly side of this compound. A thoroughbred utilitarian, full of sagacity, and carry The Works of President Edwards. Worcester (Mass.), 1808. ing into all regions of thought that strange ingenuity which makes an American the handiest of all human beings, Franklin is best embodied in his own Poor Richard. Honesty is the best policy: many a little makes a mickle: the second vice is lying, the first is running in debt; and--Get what you can, and what you get hold; Tis the stone that will turn all your lead into gold. These and a string of similar maxims are the pith of Franklin''s message to the world. Franklin, however, was not merely a man in whom the practical intelligence was developed in a very remarkable degree, but was fortunate in coming upon a crisis admirably suited to his abilities, and in being generally in harmony with the spirit of his age. He succeeded, as we know, in snatching lightning from the heavens, and the sceptre from tyrants; and had his reward in the shape of much contemporary homage from French philosophers, and lasting renown amongst his countryme...

The specialist is under what obligations to society? 3. The manufacturer is a producer of wealth because he makes things, but how about the retailer; he only buys goods and sells them at a higher price. He doesn''t make anything, i. e., bring anything into existence, and therefore he is not a producer of wealth. All who are not producers of wealth are parasites, and as such should be eliminated from our society. Criticize line by line. Admitting that the last sentence is true, does this necessarily force us to agree with the rest of the quotation? 4. In every sale of goods one party to the transaction is always the loser. The retailer must be the winner in the largest per cent of the sales that he makes or he must go out of business. Point out fallacy in both sentences of quotation. 5. Account for the historical social standing of the tradesman or retailer. 6. The buying public showed a ready willingness to respond to the new principles of retailing brought forth by the revolution in distribution. Explain. 7. Retailer, If I can keep my competitor across the street ignorant of better merchandising methods, and if I can profit by a knowledge of these methods, it stands to reason, doesn''t it, that I will be the gainer? A man is a fool to give up trade secrets. Put the other fellow out of business if you can. That''s the only way you can live nowadays. Criticize sentence by sentence. 8. Lay them in buttered pans, and bake them in a moderate oven, taking care they do not scorch, as gingerbread is more liable to burn tban any other cake. The oven should be hottest at the top. You may, if you choose, shape the gingerbread nuts, by putting flour in your hand, taking a very small piece of the dough, and rolling it into a little round ball. Picturing Men

Product : Picturing Men
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : There was a time in America when two men pictured with their arms wrapped around each other, or perhaps holding hands, weren''t necessarily seen as sexually involved--a time when such gestures could be seen simply as those of intimate friendship rather than homoeroticism. Such is the time John Ibson evokes in Picturing Men, a striking visual record of changes in attitudes about relationships between gentlemen, soldiers, cowboys, students, lumberjacks, sailors, and practical jokers. Spanning from 1850 to 1950, the 142 everyday photographs that richly illustrate Picturing Men radiate playfulness, humor, and warmth. They portray a lost world for American men: a time when their relationships with each other were more intimate than they commonly are today, regardless of sexual orientation. Picturing Men starkly contrasts the calm affection displayed in earlier photographs with the absence of intimacy in photos from the mid-1950s on. In doing so, this lively, accessible book makes a significant contribution to American history and cultural studies, gender studies, and the history of photography.

Description : In the midst of the violent, revolutionary turmoil that accompanied the last decade of tsarist rule in the Russian Empire, many Jews came to reject what they regarded as the apocalyptic and utopian prophecies of political dreamers and religious fanatics, preferring instead to focus on the promotion of cultural development in the present. Jewish Public Culture in the Late Russian Empire examines the cultural identities that Jews were creating and disseminating through voluntary associations such as libraries, drama circles, literary clubs, historical societies, and even fire brigades. Jeffrey Veidlinger explores the venues in which prominent cultural figures-including Sholem Aleichem, Mendele Moykher Sforim, and Simon Dubnov-interacted with the general Jewish public, encouraging Jewish expression within Russia''s multicultural society. By highlighting the cultural experiences shared by Jews of diverse social backgrounds-from seamstresses to parliamentarians-and in disparate geographic locales-from Ukrainian shtetls to Polish metropolises-the book revises traditional views of Jewish society in the late Russian Empire.

Questioning Christian Origins

Product : Questioning Christian Origins
Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : This book surveys, as openly and objectively as possible, the central questions associated with the life and work of Jesus and the rise of the early church. There are chapters on John the Baptist, the birth and background of Jesus, the ministry of Jesus, his trials and death, the Easter narratives, the formation of the early church, and the role of Peter and Paul in its development. In each case, the author presents what the New Testament says and discusses any ambiguities or inconsistencies in the sources. He then attempts to reconstruct as far as possible without resorting to sheer imaginative speculation the likeliest historical events which lay behind the biblical story.Often though all these topics may have been discussed, there has not been a single book dealing with Christian origins which collects together and analyses the evidence in this way. In particular, it is aimed at senior school students or first-year undergraduates embarking on courses of the History of Christian Theology or Religious Studies. The fact that some of the material arose out of articles published in History Today points to the concern of the book to appeal to the widest possible audience, not only within committed Christian circles but also outside them.

A QUICK AND INTRIGUING BOOK WITH A TRULY SATISFYING ENDING.”–Publishers WeeklyOn a spring day in England, six teenagers venture to a neglected part of their school where there is a door to a small windowless cellar. Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : In this new collection Adrienne Rich confronts dislocations and upheavals in the United States at the beginning of the twenty-first century. The title poem, in a young schoolteacher''s voice, evokes the lessons that children (Not of course here) learn amid violence and hatred, when the whole town flinches / blood on the undersole thickening to glass. Usonian Journals 2000 intercuts faces and conversations, building to a dystopic/utopic vision. Throughout these fierce and musical poems, Rich traces the imprint of a public crisis on individual experience: personal lives bent by collective realities, language itself held to account.

Letters To A Spiritual Seeker

Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : With quotable lines on every page, this is an important and affecting addition to the Thoreau shelf.--Booklist The writing of Henry David Thoreau is as full of life today as it was when he published Walden one hundred years ago. In seeking to understand nature, Thoreau sought to lead a fresh, simple life with God. In 1848 a seeker named Harrison Blake, yearning for a spiritual life of his own, asked the then-fledgling writer for guidance. The fifty letters that ensued, collected here for the first time in their own volume by Thoreau specialist Bradley P. Dean, are by turns earnest, oracular, witty, playful, practical--and deeply insightful and inspiring, as one would expect from America''s best prose stylist and great moral philosopher.

Description : This pioneering study of electoral fraud and reform focuses on Costa Rica, a country where parties gradually transformed a fraud-ridden political system into one renowned for stability and fair elections by the mid-twentieth century. Lehoucq and Molina draw upon a unique database of more than 1,300 accusations of ballot-rigging to show that, independently of social structural constraints, parties denounced fraud where electoral laws made the struggle for power more competitive. They explain how institutional arrangements generated opportunities for several executives to assemble legislative coalitions to enact far-reaching reforms.

Arguments of Augustan Wit

Product : Arguments of Augustan Wit
Category : Books>Fiction and Literature
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : Comic and satiric literature from the 1670s to the 1740s is characterized by the allusive and elusive word play of Augustan wit. The arguments of Augustan wit reveal preoccupations with the metaphorical dimension of language so distrusted by Locke and others who saw it as fundamentally opposed to the rational mode of judgement. John Sitter makes a challenging claim for the importance of wit in the writings of Dryden, Rochester, Prior, Berkeley, Gay, Pope and Swift, as an analytic mode as well as one of stylistic sophistication. He argues that wit - often regarded by modern critics as a quaint category of verbal cleverness - in fact offers to literary theory a legacy corrective of Romantic and neo-Romantic idealizations of imagination. This study aims at once to emphasize the historical specificity of Augustan writing, and to bring its arguments into dialogue with those of our time.

The Manuscript Tradition of Polybius

Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : In this 1965 text, Dr Moore divides the extant manuscripts of Polybius, the Greek historian of Rome who lived in the second century BC, into their families, and demonstrates their relationship to each other. He considers the three traditions separately, and in each he describes the manuscripts briefly and discusses any part of their history which can help in establishing their relationship. He then establishes the tradition, discussing the manuscripts in their families and considering each one in its place in the establishment of the tradition. In his opening chapter he deals with previous editions of Polybius, and he concludes with a a chapter discussing the relationship between the three groups of manuscripts, the Archetype, and possible reasons why the text should have survived in the form in which it has. This was the first study to take account of all the surviving manuscripts.

The Politics of Grandeur: Ideological Aspects of de Gaulles Foreign Policy

Product : The Politics of Grandeur: Ideological Aspects of de Gaulles Foreign Policy
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : De Gaulle was the first major Western leader to pursue a foreign policy designed consistently to break the vicious circle of the Cold War and the straitjacket of the nuclear balance of terror between Russia and the United States. At the same time, he sought to establish in France a new set of institutions designed to break another vicious circle: that of the divisive conflicts between French social groups and political parties, which led to weak governments and an ineffective state. This book studies the link between these two aims, both by examining de Gaulle''s political aims and style in a political and cultural context, and by looking first at French policy towards the Atlantic alliance, and then at the impact of de Gaulle''s foreign policy on domestic politics. As a result, many of the orthodox notions about de Gaulle are questioned.

The First and Second Books of the Chronicles

Product : The First and Second Books of the Chronicles
Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : The Chronicles, divided into two books purely for convenience, have long suffered from neglect; this is partly because much of their content can be found elsewhere in the Old Testament and partly because their presentation, emphasizing genealogies and ritual ceremonies, has lacked appeal for modern man over the last few hundred years. Yet these books, with their theological interpretation of historical events, are a valuable source of illumination about the Judaean community living under Persian rule about 350 B.C. and its special relationship with Jerusalem and its temple and with God. In his introductory section, Mr Cog ,ins discusses the probable origins and the nature and purpose of ''the Chronicler''s'' work (whether that of a single writer or a group) and then examines each book separately. In the established style of the series the N.E.B. translation of the text then follows, divided into brief sections and alternating with passages of commentary. The results of recent Old Testament scholarship and modern theological thought are conveyed in simple language to the student and layman.

Buddhism and the Spirit Cults in North-East Thailand

Description : Dr Tambiah describes the religious practices and beliefs of the people of a remote village in north-east Thailand, relating them to the wider context of the civilization in which they are embedded, and examining the relationship of the religious practices of the villagers to the classical Buddhist tradition. Because they have based their studies on the Sanskrit and Pali literature, Western observers have tended to dismiss much of the popular manifestation of Buddhism as debased. Dr Tambiah demonstrates that this judgement is misleading, and emphasizes that the contemporary village religion that he describes manifests continuities as well as transformations with respect to the classical literary tradition. The village religion is described primarily through ritual.
