The Boleyns: The Rise & Fall Of A Tudor Family

Product : The Boleyns: The Rise & Fall Of A Tudor Family
Category : Books>Biography and Memoir
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : A magnificent tale of family rivalry and intrigue set against Henry VIII''s court. The fall of Anne Boleyn and her brother George is the classic drama of the Tudor era. The Boleyns had long been an influential English family. Sir Edward Boleyn had been Lord Mayor of London. His grandson, Sir Thomas had inherited wealth and position, and through the sexual adventures of his daughters, Mary and Anne, ascended to the peak of influence at court. The three Boleyn children formed a faction of their own, making many enemies: and when those enemies secured Henry VIII''s ear, they brought down the entire family in blood and disgrace. George, Lord Rochfort, left no children. Mary left a son by her husband, William Carey - Henry Carey, Lord Hunsdon. Anne left a daughter, Elizabeth I - so like her in many ways and a sexual politician without rival. Includes 33 illustrations, 25 in colour.

Colchester 24

Product : Colchester 24
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : In 1986 there was an exhibition of local photography called ''Just Another Day'' in which 20 local photographers had combined to capture life in Colchester over a 24-hour period on October 21 and 22nd that year. The exhibition attracted a great deal of attention, but in due course it closed and the photographs were put into storage. Twenty five years passed, and in 2011 another team of photographers founded the Colchester 24 Trust to photograph Colchester over another 24-hour period from Noon on Friday October 21st to Noon on Saturday October 22nd 2011 - exactly 25 years after the original event. By now, of course, there had been a revolution in photography thanks to the widespread availability of electronic cameras. By contrast, with strong backing from the Essex County Standard newspaper, ''Colchester 24'' was thrown open to the Colchester public, inviting them to capture life in Colchester in 2011; to compile an archive for future generations to see. The outcome was overwhelming. Over 5,000 electronic images were contributed by about 200 photographers, which included schoolchildren, students, grandparents and amateur photographers of all kinds.

Warminster Through Time

Product : Warminster Through Time
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : Warminster''s industrial and agricultural heyday was already past by the dawn of the age of the picture postcard. Its once important role in the Wiltshire woollen cloth industry was a distant memory, and its famous corn market was reduced. Warminster is portrayed by these early photographs as a bustling town; its eighteenth- and nineteenth-century prosperity is evident in a wide range of fine civic, commercial, communal and private properties. The absence of any great revival in Warminster''s economic fortunes during the twentieth century is apparent in the paired images in this book, which show, for better or worse, how little the architectural fabric of the town, as it looked a century ago, has changed. Now, much expanded, Warminster continues as a busy, popular and well-placed county town, and one that is steeped in history.

Jane Seymour: Henry Viii's Favourite Wife

Product : Jane Seymour: Henry Viii's Favourite Wife
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : Jane was Henry VIII''s third Queen, and she was described by him as ''his first true wife'', both his first two marriages having been annulled. She was twenty-seven when he married her, and came of a solid gentry family with good court connections. She had served both Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn as a Lady of the Privy Chamber, and her failure to find a suitable marriage is something of a mystery. He was forty-four and desperate for the male heir who had so far eluded him, but which Jane''s placid disposition and sexual availability seemed to promise. She was no great beauty, but came of a good breeding stock, and therein lay his hope. They married at the end of May 1536, and she became pregnant at about the end of the year, a condition which advanced normally, but which caused the King acute anxiety as the summer of 1537 advanced. Then in October 1537 Jane performed the great miracle, and bore Henry a son, who lived and flourished. Tragically she died of puerperal fever a few days later, leaving the court in mourning and the king devastated. Her obsequies were elaborate and prolonged, and Henry stayed in mourning for many weeks. The king''s son, Prince Edward was carefully nurtured, and probably did not miss the mother he had never known. When the time came, his education was overseen by Henry''s sixth Queen, Catherine Parr, and he seems not to have had much of the Seymour in his make up. He was very much his father''s boy.

North Shields Through Time

Product : North Shields Through Time
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : North Shields had its humble beginnings on the north side of the banks of the River Tyne near the entrance from the North Sea. It was once a thriving fishing port, the entrance to the harbour which served Newcastle upon Tyne. Its name came from the ''shielings'' or fishermen''s lodges, which built up along the riverbank on the orders of Prior Germanus from Tynemouth Priory on the headland. The town is now a busy shopping area with the buildings on the quayside changing usage to elegant loft-living spaces and flats overlooking the harbour with its own buzzing community of fresh fish shops and restaurants. The Fish Quay is a conservation area with its own active group of residents campaigning to preserve the fishing and maritime heritage of the region.

Rotherham United: A Pictorial History

Product : Rotherham United: A Pictorial History
Category : Books>Sports and Fitness
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : Less than a decade ago, a warlock sat in a cloud of incense in the car park at Rotherham United''s tatty old Millmoor Ground, chanting incantations and putting a curse on the Millers. Since then, the South Yorkshiremen have plunged to the brink of losing their place in the Football League, been docked a bagful of points for financial irregularities, and came within minutes of extinction. Whether the warlock had anything to do with it all is anyone''s guess, but the Millers were certainly in trouble. Rotherham United are now, a few short years later, playing in a brand-new GBP20 million stadium and looking to power their way back up the league. In May 2013 they were promoted to League One. It''s been a real roller-coaster ride for the club, from their humble beginnings at the dawn of the game to today, but the years have certainly produced a legion of stories and characters - and will no doubt continue to do so. Rotherham United: A Pictorial History tells the story of the Millers, illustrated in full colour with pictures from the Rotherham Advertiser''s archives.

Gordon Banks: A Biography

Product : Gordon Banks: A Biography
Category : Books>Biography and Memoir
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : Passion for football in England shifted in the second half of the twentieth century. Around 40 million spectators entered the turnstiles at the peak of the 1948/49 season. In the years that followed, the attendances varied but the football only got better, leading England to win the World Cup in 1966. There were a number of great players that graced the pitches of Great Britain in the 1960s and 1970s. This book tells the story of one of them. Gordon Banks is still regarded as England''s nest ever goalkeeper. His club career took him to Chesterfield, Leicester City and Stoke City. He was paid GBP2 a match at Chesterfield, and his transfer from Leicester to Stoke was for GBP50,000 - well below some current Premiership players'' wages today! Capped seventy-three times by England, Gordon went on to lift the World Cup as England''s goalkeeper and make arguably the save of the century in Mexico in 1970. The youngest of four brothers from Sheffield, Gordon abandoned plans to become a bricklayer when Chesterfield came looking. He was later to marry and have three children. As television allowed fans to watch from the comfort of their own living rooms or the pub, Gordon Banks was ever present, and he remains much admired and revered to this day.

Northampton Through Time

Product : Northampton Through Time
Category : Books>Art and Architecture
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : Northampton was nationally important in medieval times but most traces of the period were destroyed by the Great Fire of 1675. The rebuilt town centre, the development of the shoe trade in the nineteenth century, and the era of transport and work in the community was later engulfed by the spreading boundaries of the town, as were the industry and commerce which graced the River Nene. Today the shoe factories have all but gone; motor cars and buses have replaced the trams and many impressive buildings reflecting civic pride have disappeared at the hands of developers. Northampton Through Time seeks to show these changes through a splendid array of photographs, reflecting the contrast between the bustling Northampton of today and the grandeur of the past, providing a valuable archive and insight into the history of the town for all.

Hull City A History

Category : Books>Sports and Fitness
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : Hull City have been in existence 110 years, and while the last ten have seen the club rise from the bottom of League Two to reach the Premier League, there is a rich and varied history to look back on. Highlights such as an FA Cup semi-final, the magnificent Raich Carter era and the Wagstaff and Chilton years have been punctuated by lows such as the club missing out on promotion to the old First Division on goal difference, being the first club to go into administration and having to suffer the ignominy of twice being locked out of their own ground. Extensively researched, including interviews with ex-players and supporters, David Goodman has attempted to gain the inside story on the extraordinary journey from the club’s humble beginnings through to their move to the KC Stadium. This book is essential reading for all supporters of the Tigers.

Braunton & Around Through Time

Product : Braunton & Around Through Time
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : Change is inevitable and continuous. In Braunton many of the changes have been recorded in photographs, sometimes professional, most often by the people of Braunton taking a picture of their village. The two events driving most changes since 1900 were the closing of the railway and construction of new roads: one to Ilfracombe, one to Barnstaple. Other changes were more gradual: old buildings replaced by new, changes in the use of buildings and industries opening and closing. Traditionally Braunton had both a port, from which vessels worked the coastal trade, and agriculture. The port has gone, although the moorings are still used for recreational craft. Tourism is very important now as many people come to enjoy the beaches and surrounding area. The Braunton & District Museum has chosen a selection of photographs to show how Braunton has changed over the last hundred years, and what has endured.

Burton Upon Trent Memories

Product : Burton Upon Trent Memories
Category : Books>Travel
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : Burton upon Trent Memories offers a nostalgic look back at the town''s past through a selection of postcards, photographs, receipts and adverts from the author''s own collection. Burton upon Trent, which straddles the River Trent in the east of Staffordshire, is the largest town in the National Forest. ''Burton'', as it is known locally, grew up around Burton upon Trent Abbey, which was a major religious centre for Staffordshire in medieval times. In later years, the River Trent Navigation was extended to Burton and, by the early modern period, it had emerged as a bustling market town. Burton has a wealth of fine buildings, including the Town Hall, St Margaret''s church and St Paul''s, many of which were donated by Michael Bass, who became Lord Burton in the nineteenth century. As its brewing industry assumed importance in the early nineteenth century, the town really started to expand. In its heyday, Burton boasted a dozen or so breweries and was regarded as the international brewing capital of the world. Author Terry Garner invites the reader to step back in time and explore Burton upon Trent''s rich and fascinating history.

Description : The City of Nottingham as we know it today began life as an Anglo-Saxon settlement. By the late nineteenth century, Nottingham had developed into a thriving city. Through photographs, documents and other images, Nottingham From Old Photographs reflects the change from the early settlement of Tigguo Cobauc (a place of cave dwellings) to one of the leading cities in England. Most of the photographs and research within these pages have come from the collection of the late Paul Nix of the Nottingham Hidden History Team (NHHT). Liverpool: The Rise, Fall And Renaissance Of A World Class City

Product : Liverpool: The Rise, Fall And Renaissance Of A World Class City
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : The unique tale of the great port and city of ''Leverpul'' begins in 1207; it does not even appear in William the Conqueror''s Domesday Book of 1086. Liverpool was created by the belligerent English monarch King John. Within sixty years of the end of the Civil War, Liverpool created the world''s first enclosed, commercial wet dock; eventually there would be docks along 71/2 miles of the River Mersey. It rapidly grew into the greatest port and city in the entire British Empire outside London. Nevertheless, by 1980, Liverpool''s population had reduced by over half; its infrastructure and economy were decaying, and its political leaders were leading the city towards complete collapse. Today, however, Liverpool has the fastest-growing economy in Britain, helping to lead the country out of recession; it has been a European Capital of Culture and is a UNESCO World Heritage City. The renaissance continues, with the passion and energy for which ''Scousers'' are renowned! This is an inspiring story of an outstanding people, and of the rise, fall, and renaissance of their remarkable home: Liverpool - a world-class city.

Leicester In The 1960s: Ten Years That Changed A City

Product : Leicester In The 1960s: Ten Years That Changed A City
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : For the people of Leicester, the 1960s was a decade of great social and economic change. It was to see a revolution in social attitudes reflected in the popular music of the time, in fashion, and in the print and broadcast media. Life changed for everyone. Railway stations closed as the motor vehicle grew in popularity. National Service ended, the pirate radio stations were scuppered, colour television became available, and the fashion garments manufactured by Leicester’s giant textile companies were very different and sometimes extreme as hemlines rose dramatically. Changing attitudes led to social conflict between parents and children, teachers and pupils. Meanwhile, the teenagers danced at Il Rondo to The Who and Fleetwood Mac, and swooned to The Beatles at the De Montfort Hall. In Leicester in the 1960s, Stephen Butt charts the excitement and vibrancy of the ‘Swinging Sixties’ and reflects also on the economic and social problems that were just beneath the surface.

Using archive material from The York Press, York City Archives and the prestigious Borthwick Institute at the University of York, this book provides a unique history of York in an often forgotten decade, forgotten even though it provides the bedrock for much of what we see today.

Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : With four potteries, the Fife town of Kirkcaldy was a major producer of pottery during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Fife Pottery, Rosslyn Pottery and Sinclairtown Pottery were all based in the Gallatown area of Kirkcaldy, while Kirkcaldy Pottery was in the Links, all well away from the town centre. Although the four Kirkcaldy potteries each produced a variety of designs and styles, the area is most famous for Wemyss Ware. First produced by Heron & Son’s Fife Pottery in 1882, Wemyss Ware was based on the designs of old pieces of pottery in the collection of the Wemyss family. Although Fife Pottery went out of business in 1930, Wemyss Ware commands high prices at auction. In this book, Carol McNeill tells the story of the potteries using a fascinating collection of both old and new photographs.

Dalkeith & Around Through Time

Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : The Midlothian town of Dalkeith has had an eventful history. Cromwell’s officer, General Monck, was Commander in Scotland, and the government of the country was based out of Dalkeith Castle. In the seventeenth century, Dalkeith had one of Scotland’s largest markets in its exceptionally broad High Street. In 1831 Dalkeith was linked to Edinburgh by a railway line that transported coal, minerals and agricultural produce. Two decades later, in 1853, a corn exchange, at the time the largest indoor grain market in Scotland, was built, and in 1879 Dalkeith was where Gladstone first started his campaign to become British prime minister. The surrounding villages also have their fair share of historical significance: Newtongrange was Scotland’s largest mining village in the 1890s and today houses the National Mining Museum; Bonnyrigg was a mining village until the 1920s; Lasswade was a popular holiday resort in the nineteenth century for wealthy Edinburgh residents; and in nearby Roslin is Rosslyn Chapel, famous for its connections to the Knights Templar and the Holy Grail and which featured in The Da Vinci Code.

Edinburgh Pubs

Product : Edinburgh Pubs
Category : Books>Food and Drink>Beverages
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : The teeming nature of life in eighteenth-century Edinburgh elevated the Old Town’s taverns to a critical role in the city’s social life, and there was ‘no superabundance of sobriety in the town’. Much of the business life of the city was carried out in taverns where it was even normal for doctors to consult their patients. The Edinburgh taverns of the eighteenth century are described as having ‘a coarse and darksome snugness which was courted by their worshippers’. These earlier basic hostelries were swept away during the period 1880–1910, which is recognised as the golden age of pub design. These new pubs were decorated with an abundance of spectacular ornaments to attract customers into their shining interiors. This book won’t tell you how many real ales or malts the pubs stock or whether the burgers are worth popping in for. What it does provide is a record of Edinburgh Pubs that are architectural gems of exceptional quality or which have a particularly interesting historical association.

Description : Why did the young girls of Longton rush to touch lamp posts, iron pillars or railings whenever they saw the local rector? Who were the Potteries ‘resurrectionists’ involved in body-snatching from St John’s churchyard, Burslem, in 1831? Why did some Hanley people fear that the world was about to end in 1835? In which Potteries town did rat-baiting take place in 1867? And which fine vocalist was banned from singing at Goldenhill church on account of his being a boxer? This is no pub quiz, nor is it a book of tall stories, but a unique insight into the city of Stoke-on-Trent. Here is a feast of little-known facts relating to the city’s history ‘below the surface’. By turns quirky, shocking, investigative and always original, it reveals much about the Potteries of the past and proves the old adage that fact is far stranger than fiction. Total Recovery: Solving the Mystery of Chronic Pain and Depression

Product : Total Recovery: Solving the Mystery of Chronic Pain and Depression
Category : Books>Health and Well Being
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : About 100 million Americans live with some form of chronic pain-more than the combined number who suffer from diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. But chronic pain has always been a mystery. It often returns at the slightest provocation, even when doctors can''t find anything wrong. Oddly enough, whether the pain is physical or emotional, traumatic or slight, our brains register all pain as the same thing, and these signals can keep firing in the nervous system for months, even years. In Total Recovery, Dr. Gary Kaplan argues that we''ve been thinking about disease all wrong. Drawing on dramatic patient stories and cutting-edge research, the book reveals that chronic physical and emotional pain are two sides of the same coin. New discoveries show that disease is not the result of a single event but an accumulation of traumas. Every injury, every infection, every toxin, and every emotional blow generates the same reaction: inflammation, activated by tiny cells in the brain, called microglia. Turned on too often from too many assaults, it can have a devastating cumulative effect.Conventional treatment for these conditions is focused on symptoms, not causes, and can leave patients locked into a lifetime of pain and suffering. Dr. Kaplan''s unified theory of chronic pain and depression helps us understand not only the cause of these conditions but also the issues we must address to create a pathway to healing. With this revolutionary new framework in place, we have been given the keys to recover.

Category : Books>Biography and Memoir
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : Most people think of snipers as shooters perched in urban hides, dealing out death unseen from a considerable distance. But this description barely scratches the surface. Special operations snipers are men with stacked skill sets who have the ability to turn the tide of battles, even when they aren''t pulling the trigger. Snipers have played an outsized role in the War on Terror that has earned them the Medal of Honor, Navy Cross, and countless other honors. These are the most experienced warriors on the battlefield, oftentimes the units'' best assaulters with years of door-kicking under their belt. These are the men who run ops in small teams across borders, or dress like locals and pull off high-risk vehicle reconnaissance and singleton missions in non-permissive environments. MODERN AMERICAN SNIPERS tells the inside story of some of the most heroic patriots in recent American history by the friends and colleagues who knew them best, including: * The Legend - Chris Kyle, SEAL Team 3 Chief and the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history* The Reaper - Nick Irving, the first African American to serve as a sniper in the 3rd Ranger Battalion, and its deadliest, with 33 confirmed kills * Robert Horrigan, Delta sniper who played a critical role in Operation Anaconda* Don Hollenbaugh, Delta Operator who earned the Distinguished Service Cross while embedded with a Marine platoon in the First Battle of Fallujah* And many more

Hastings & St Leonards Through Time

Product : Hastings & St Leonards Through Time
Category : Books>Art and Architecture
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : ''Hastings and St Leonards, the charming marine resort of fashionable English society, possess attractions and recommendations that render the borough unique and unrivalled among English watering places. Strangers who have not visited the place are liable to be misled by the separate mention of the two names into the idea that St Leonards and Hastings form two separate and independent towns, which in fact they originally were. That stage, however, has long since been passed - '' The above extract was taken from the 1897 edition of Views and Reviews - Hastings and exemplifies how the town was regarded as a stylish seaside resort by Victorian and Edwardian society. The town eventually lost favour among the wealthier classes, which set in motion a steady decline, only worsened by the onset of the Second World War. But Hastings today is undergoing a process of change and revival; a number of developments have been taking place which are moving the town towards a position in which it is once again ''unique and unrivalled among English watering places''.

Exploring Nottinghamshire

Category : Books>Art and Architecture
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : Parts of this much centralised English county Keith had visited with his parents throughout his wartime boyhood. Later as a young man his continuing enthusiasm for the natural scene, and wildlife in particular, had entailed many forays into the Sherwood Forest country which embraced much of Th e Dukeries famed for their acres of preserved woodlands, heaths and river-connected lakes. In the following years, his interests in the great country houses and their surrounding ducal estates involved him in pleasantly long hours of research. He took an interest in the ancestry connections, the Civil War battles and the origins of market towns and villages. Occasionally, he diverted to learn more about Byron and D. H. Lawrence and as he rummaged studiously through the library shelves discovered the works of a then more recent writer, Fred Kitchen, who devotedly described the north Nottinghamshire scene as observed through the eyes of a farmer. Befriending a Dukeries gamekeeper, Forestry Commission warrener and Ruff ord Abbey caretaker further enhanced each of the author''s explorations, the majority of which are included in this fascinating volume.

The Colne Valley & Halstead Railway Through Time

Product : The Colne Valley & Halstead Railway Through Time
Category : Books>Art and Architecture
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : This book takes an in-depth look at the small independent railway that was financed and built by the good citizens of Halstead and its surrounding villages in Essex. The CV&HR came into being in 1860 but struggled financially for a number of years before being put into receivership. However, in the late nineteenth century it made steady progress and reached its financial and traffic peak in the years leading up to the First World War. Absorbed into the LNER in 1923, and passing into state ownership in 1948, the line ceased to carry passengers from 1 January 1962 and closed completely in April 1965. Yet a small portion of the line has since been rebuilt from scratch at Castle Hedingham. The reader is invited to view the stations and locomotives of this historic railway, witnessing the line in its prime and in the years since its closure. Some stations have survived remarkably well, while others have been totally destroyed. But many artefacts from the old line survive as part of the Castle Hedingham restoration undertaken by dedicated enthusiasts. The story of this project and the railway to which it pays homage is revealed through this varied selection of images and their authoritative captions.

Industrial Archaeology Of The Plym Valley

Description : In this new look at the Plym Valley, local author Ernie Hoblyn looks at the ruins of the industrial past and asks, ''Why did they build that here and what is it for?'' Covering the valley running north from the Laira estuary to Clearbook, Industrial Archaeology of the Plym Valley describes the railways, quarries, mines, mills and clay works that once operated there, looking at both the physical remains and the memories of those who once lived in the valley. Most of the industries in the Plym Valley existed during the period from the mid-eighteenth century to the late nineteenth or early twentieth century, roughly from the start of the Industrial Revolution to the late Victorian era. Few survived very far into the twentieth century and today little apart from ruins of buildings survives as witness to all the hard work done by many people over many years. This book aims to bring a few of these ruins to life and tell their story.

Thomas Hardy's Dorset Through Time

Steve Wallis revisits the Dorset heartland of Hardy''s Wessex, and illustrates the changes that have taken place using old and new images. He charts Thomas Hardy''s life and work through the places he knew and the locations he immortalised, from his birthplace at Stinsford, to his old age at Max Gate, with Swanage, Sturminster Newton, Weymouth and Wimborne in between. The Fossil Hunter: Dinosaurs, Evolution, and the Woman Whose Discoveries Changed the World

Product : The Fossil Hunter: Dinosaurs, Evolution, and the Woman Whose Discoveries Changed the World
Category : Books>Biography and Memoir
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : Mary Anning was only twelve years old when, in 1811, she discovered the first dinosaur skeleton--of an ichthyosaur--while fossil hunting on the cliffs of Lyme Regis, England. Until Mary''s incredible discovery, it was widely believed that animals did not become extinct. The child of a poor family, Mary became a fossil hunter, inspiring the tongue-twister, She Sells Sea Shells by the Seashore. She attracted the attention of fossil collectors and eventually the scientific world. Once news of the fossils reached the halls of academia, it became impossible to ignore the truth. Mary''s peculiar finds helped lay the groundwork for Charles Darwin''s theory of evolution, laid out in his On the Origin of Species. Darwin drew on Mary''s fossilized creatures as irrefutable evidence that life in the past was nothing like life in the present. A story worthy of Dickens, The Fossil Hunter chronicles the life of this young girl, with dirt under her fingernails and not a shilling to buy dinner, who became a world-renowned paleontologist. Dickens himself said of Mary: The carpenter''s daughter has won a name for herself, and deserved to win it.Here at last, Shelley Emling returns Mary Anning, of whom Stephen J. Gould remarked, is probably the most important unsung (or inadequately sung) collecting force in the history of paleontology, to her deserved place in history.

Description : Andrew Jackson is best known as the president who created Jacksonian democracy, with its focus on manifest destiny and laissez-faire economics. But rarely are his accomplishments as a general highlighted. Jackson''s effective use of spies in war time and of martial law in peace time sparked a debate about the curtailing of civil liberties in the name of national security that continues to this day. Most of all, Jackson was a great motivator who could, with a few carefully selected words and by his own brave example, turn around starved, deserting troops, convincing them to fight. With dramatic scenes of fierce battles and victories, Remini reveals here why Jackson''s bold leadership as a general led to his election as President of the United States in 1828.

Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : During the first four years of the Second World War, Churchill and his military advisers were constantly concerned with the defence and sustenance of Malta. From 11 June 1940, the island, only sixty miles from Italian and German airfields in Sicily, suffered intense and prolonged air attack, but Churchill refused to consider the abandonment of the island. He gave orders that every effort be made to provide the supplies needed to maintain a base from which Rommel''s supply convoys to North Africa, and other enemy targets, could be attacked. Despite the hazards and severe losses, Malta pulled through and made a unique contribution to Allied victory in the Mediterranean. This was recognised in April 1942 when King George VI awarded the George Cross to the island and its people. In this deeply researched volume, the story of Malta''s heroic struggle is told through Churchill''s official Malta Papers. These documents reveal the events as they unfolded and the top-level discussions and decisions which were necessary for the maintenance of Malta. They are also supplemented by extracts from letters, diaries and memoirs which shed additional light on these dramatic events.

200 Years Of Clyde Pleasure Steamers

Product : 200 Years Of Clyde Pleasure Steamers
Category : Books>Reference and Language
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : In August 1812, two centuries ago, the River Clyde would see a transport revolution - one that would change the economy of the river for ever. A Helensburgh hotel owner began to operate Europe''s first ever commercial steam ship from Glasgow to Greenock. No longer would ships be dependent on the tide or the wind. The Comet, as his ship was known, had been built by John Wood, of Port Glasgow, and was fitted with paddle wheels. Her first voyage from Glasgow to Greenock was made at about 5mph against a headwind. Advertised to sail on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from Glasgow, the Comet operated the first scheduled steamship service in Europe. It was the start of a revolution that would see the Clyde as the greatest shipbuilding river in the world, and the river''s estuary as a haven for pleasure steamers and puffers calling at the remote loch-side piers and inlets. Companies such as David MacBrayne''s and the Caledonian Steam Packet Co. would be formed to operate steamers far and wide, a legacy kept alive today by the Paddle Steamer Waverley. Alistair Deayton and Iain Quinn take us through the two centuries of Clyde paddle steamers, illustrating the most famous, such as the Columba, Jeanie Deans and Waverley, illustrating not just the ships themselves but the piers they sailed from, from Rothesay to Helensburgh and from Loch Goil to Loch Long.

Piers Of Hampshire & The Isle Of Wight

Product : Piers Of Hampshire & The Isle Of Wight
Category : Books>Reference and Language
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : Despite their popular association with fun and frivolity, the function of piers as both an amusement centre and landing stage was varied, and nowhere was this better illustrated than on the coasts of Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and east Dorset. The area''s association with piers dates right back to 1814 with the opening of Ryde Pier, often regarded as the earliest in the United Kingdom. Southampton opened a landing pier for steamers in 1833 and Portsmouth and Gosport followed suit in the 1840s. By the 1860s, seaside piers were becoming fashionable promenades over the sea and a ''must have'' for any selfrespecting watering place. Some of the earliest landing piers, such as Ryde and Southampton Royal, took on a dual-purpose function as a landing/pleasure pier and pavilions and other attractions were provided on them. The Isle of Wight, increasingly popular as a holiday destination, saw numerous piers sprout from its coast, whilst in Hampshire pleasure piers were erected at Southsea, Lee-on-the-Solent and three in the Bournemouth area at Southbourne, Boscombe and Bournemouth. Piers were also erected for railway, military, industrial and pleasure boat purposes, and the fascinating, diverse and interesting histories of all the region''s piers can be found in this comprehensive and well-illustrated volume.

Peas, Pigs And Poetry

Category : Books>Reference and Language
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : If you were told that from about 1920 to 1950 a school in Gloucestershire was visited almost every week by interested groups from all over the UK and many from abroad who wanted to study the teaching methods inside and outside the classroom, which school would you think it was? And if you were told that the Secretary of Gloucestershire Education Committee wrote in 1921 that this school ''goes as near attaining an ideal as any School can go'', you would probably still think of the several very distinguished schools in the county. But think again, for in 1929 a government inspector reported, ''This happy little village school is a live community where a full life is provided for the children whose response to the inspiring leadership of the Head Master is completely loyal.'' The village is Maisemore and Peas, Pigs & Poetry describes how Alfred Edgar Driver, who became headmaster at the age of twenty-three in 1915, brought Maisemore Church of England School to national and international recognition. Furthermore, the book covers the many contributions that Mr Driver made to village life through the parish council, in sport, and as the founder of the Pig and Poultry Club for adults. It is a moving and inspiring story of the difference one man can make in the lives of many.

Kill The Queen!: The Eight Assassination Attempts On Queen Victoria

Product : Kill The Queen!: The Eight Assassination Attempts On Queen Victoria
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : Queen Victoria was our longest reigning monarch, a symbol of Britain''s great age of power and imperialism. But her life could so easily have been cut short. Just three years after she ascended to the throne, a humble ''pot-boy'' fired a brace of pistols at her from just six paces away. She escaped unharmed, but amazingly there were seven further attacks or attempts on her life over the next forty-seven years. The perpetrators were a mixture of madmen, attention-seekers, and fiends: the unemployed carpenter who ended up transported to the hell of a labour camp in Van Dieman''s Land; the midget newsvendor who eventually took his own life; the army officer who dressed as a dandy; the disaffected artist, and the Fenian terrorists. Through it all there is Victoria; how she coped with the fear and became a symbol of resolve and determination. Each chapter of this book captures the drama of the attack and uncovers the would-be assassin''s motives, describing their lives up to that point, their trial and sentence, and what became of them afterwards. Extensive original research in England and Australia has uncovered a mass of new and previously unpublished detail that makes for an absorbing read.

Along The Hudson: Luxury Liner Row In The 1950s And 60s

Product : Along The Hudson: Luxury Liner Row In The 1950s And 60s
Category : Books>Reference and Language
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : On both sides of the Hudson River, along the Manhattan and Hoboken waterfronts, for the best part of a century, millions of people teemed out of ocean liners, bound for a new life in North America. Lines such as North German Lloyd, Cunard, White Star, Holland America, Swedish America and the Hamburg Amerika Line all disgorged their human cargo into the USA. By the 1920s, mass emigration to America had all but finished. But there was a new breed of traveler, the tourist, the businessman and the cruiser. The largest ships had always been seen as Ships of State, certainly since the German fliers of the early twentieth century, and the new breed of ocean liner was glamorous beyond compare. Designed to capture the cream of the passenger trade, they were luxurious and fast, with world-class restaurants. Ships such as the Andrea Doria, the Stockholm, Cunard''s Queens, Mary and Elizabeth, the SS United States, the SS Rotterdam and the Independence and Constitution all vied for the public''s affection. These ships and many others sailed into what became known as Luxury Liner Row, that short strip of real estate sandwiched between the Lincoln Highway and the Hudson. William H Miller tells the story of the ships on Luxury Liner Row, with many photographs illustrating the glamour, the luxury and the sheer buzz of New York''s waterfront in the 1950s and 60s.

Harborne Through Time

Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : Harborne changed very little until the nineteenth century. Until then it was a farming community, with a resident Lord of the Manor, one parish church, a chapel and a few pubs. The main industry in the town was nailing. Harborne was in Staffordshire, and was part of the ancient parish of Harborne and Smethwick in the diocese of Lichfield. During the latter half of the nineteenth century, the population increased from 1637 in 1841, to 3,617 in 1861 and 10,113 by 1901.In 1891, Harborne became a suburb of Birmingham and in 1905 it became part of the new diocese of the city. Until 1930, when it was demolished, it had a Tudor farmhouse. It also had a railway and a fire station but those too have gone. Harborne does boast one jewel - the Moor Pool Estate, now a conservation area. This book is sure to evoke a wealth of memories and interest anyone who knows the area and would enjoy a visit into its past.

In & Around Swindon Works

Product : In & Around Swindon Works
Category : Books>Reference and Language
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : In and Around Swindon Works covers further aspects of the famous manufacturing centre of the Great Western Railway during its heyday of 1930 to 1960. This is the second half of a detailed work begun with the book Working at Swindon Works 1930 - 1960. In piecemeal form, much has been written about Swindon Works but many aspects of it have remained, until now, neglected. From ex-employees, both male and female, and printed material such as surviving GWR circulars and internal documents, the author has compiled a comprehensive study. Manufacturing processes, factory conditions, senior staff, office routines, design and development, training and the significance of the Works within the railway company are all covered to some extent. There are chapters on: raw materials and General Stores, the Drawing Office, steam and diesel locomotive building and overhaul, the Carriage and Wagon department and its staff, wartime conditions and war work, CME accounts, fires, accidents, housing, medical care and, as the title suggests, there is something of the home and social life of the staff as well. The end result is not complete but so long after the events, it''s ''near enough'' as old Swindonians would have said.

East Lothian Through Time

Product : East Lothian Through Time
Category : Books
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : East Lothian, previously known as Haddingtonshire, has both benefitted and suffered from its strategic location between Scotland''s capital city and England''s northernmost county. Prior to 1707, the region bore the brunt of battles between the two countries, not only on land but along 32 miles of coastline. The rich, fertile soils, on the other hand, have produced wealth through agriculture and the patchwork of large, neat fields are synonymous with the landscape of East Lothian today. The proximity to Edinburgh makes it a prime location from which to commute. Attractive pantiled properties abound throughout the villages and countryside, all within short distances of the clean beaches or links golf courses, while tranquillity can also be found in the woodlands or gentle moorland slopes of the Lammermuir Hills. The reminders of troubled times can be viewed today by a stroll around a castle, but twenty-first-century East Lothian is thriving.

Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : Learning, leading, and leaving a legacy are the seasons of a leader''s life. The beginning phase involves the passion of youth and excitement for the future and is a time of earning degrees, finding mentors, and more. And while leaders are always learners, soon enough the true season of leadership arrives where the leader leads, employing key practices to advance the mission of their work. Finally, a leader must consider her legacy -- the wisdom gained, the people influenced, and the model of leadership that''s left behind to inspire a subsequent generation ahead. In Seasons of a Leader''s Life, seminary president Jeff Iorg identifies Peter from The Bible as someone who lives through all three phases in the New Testament. In the Gospels he was a learner. In Acts he was a leader. In 1 and 2 Peter he wrote his legacy. Looking through that lens, Iorg blends scripture with leadership principles while prompting readers to see a bigger picture: Which season are you in right now? What should you be learning? How can you improve what you are doing? What will you leave for future generations? These questions surely lead to better leadership.

Who Jesus really is—rather than the way we instinctively perceive him emotionally and theologically—is what will make the difference and help clear the fog.Through a broad approach, Faith in the Fog tackles the feelings of failure, uselessness, and shame, which are often the underlying causes of depression and burnout among Christians.

Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : Louisiana is our most exotic state. It is religious and roguish, a place populated by Cajuns, Creoles, Rednecks, and Bible-thumpers. It is a state that loves good food, good music, and good times. Laissez les bons temps rouler -- let the good times roll -- is the unofficial motto. Louisiana is also excessively corrupt. In the 1990s, it plunged headlong into legalized gambling, authorizing more games of chance than any other state. Leading the charge was Governor Edwin Edwards, who for years had flaunted his fondness for cold cash and high-stakes gambling, and who had used his razor-sharp mind and catlike reflexes to stay one step ahead of the law. Gambling, Edwin Edwards, and Louisiana''s political culture would prove to be a combustible mix.Bad Bet on the Bayou tells the story of what happened when the most corrupt industry came to our most corrupt state. It is a sweeping morality tale about commerce, politics, and what happens when the law catches up to our most basic human desires and frailties.

The Brontes Went To Woolworths: A Novel

Product : The Brontes Went To Woolworths: A Novel
Category : Books>Fiction and Literature
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : ''How I loathe that kind of novel which is about a lot of sisters''; so proclaims Deirdre at the beginning of The Brontës Went to Woolworths, one of three sisters.London, 1931. As growing up looms large in the lives of the Carne sisters, Deirdre, Katrine and young Sheil still share an insatiable appetite for the fantastic. Eldest sister Deirdre is a journalist, Katrine a fledgling actress and young Sheil is still with her governess; together they live a life unchecked by their mother in their bohemian town house. Irrepressibly imaginative, the sisters cannot resist making up stories as they have done since childhood; from their talking nursery toys, Ironface the Doll and Dion Saffyn the pierrot, to their fulsomely-imagined friendship with real high-court Judge Toddington who, since Mrs Carne did jury duty, they affectionately called Toddy. However, when Deirdre meets Toddy''s real-life wife at a charity bazaar, the sisters are forced to confront the subject of their imaginings. Will the sisters cast off the fantasies of childhood forever? Will Toddy and his wife, Lady Mildred, accept these charmingly eccentric girls? And when fancy and reality collide, who can tell whether Ironface can really talk, whether Judge Toddington truly wears lavender silk pyjamas or whether the Brontës did indeed go to Woolworths? The Brontës Went to Woolworths is part of The Bloomsbury Group, a new library of books from the early twentieth-century chosen by readers for readers.

The City Under The Skin: A Novel

Product : The City Under The Skin: A Novel
Category : Books>Fiction and Literature>Fiction>Literary
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : A cartographic thriller with so many twists and turns it requires its own mapA cartography-obsessed misfit clerk from an antique map store in a district that''s not quite trendy yet. A bold young woman chasing the answer to a question she can''t quite formulate. A petty criminal hoping the parking lot he''s just purchased is the ticket to a new life of respectability with his school-age daughter. A ruthless but vulnerable killer and his disgruntled accomplice. In The City Under the Skin, it''s not fate that will bind these characters together but something more concrete and sinister: the appearance of a group of mysterious women, their backs crudely and extensively tattooed with maps. They have been kidnapped, marked, and released, otherwise unharmed. When one turns up on the doorstep of the map shop and abruptly bares her back, only to be hustled away by a man in a beat-up blue Cadillac, it''s the misfit clerk Zak, pushed by his curious new friend Marilyn, who finds himself reluctantly entering a criminal underworld whose existence he''d prefer to ignore. In this haunting literary thriller, Geoff Nicholson paints a deft portrait of a city in transition. His sharply drawn characters are people desperate to know where they are but scared of being truly seen. A meditation on obsession and revenge, a hymn to the joys of urban exploration, The City Under the Skin is a wholly original novel about the indelible scars we both live with and inflict on others.
