Beyond Behaviour Change: Key Issues, Interdisciplinary Approaches And Future Directions

Product : Beyond Behaviour Change: Key Issues, Interdisciplinary Approaches And Future Directions
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : A desire to change behavior—getting people to eat better, approach child discipline differently, or even just take the bus—is at the root of a lot of social and social welfare programs. But the question of how we can bring about effective, lasting changes in behavior is a complicated one, drawing together a range of academic disciplines and fields of social research. This book explores the political and historical landscape of behavior change, covering political ideology, trends in academic theory, and new innovations in practice and research. In addition, it examines priorities that have become central to thinking in the field, such as ways of evaluating success and measuring return on investment.

Mapping Shakespeare's World

Product : Mapping Shakespeare's World
Category : Books
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : Shakespeare never set a play in his own Elizabethan London. From the castle in Elsinore where Hamlet avenges his father’s death to Cleopatra’s Alexandria at the height of the Roman Empire to the seaport town in Cyprus where we await the arrival of Othello, each of Shakespeare’s plays is set in a time or space remote from his primary audience. Why is this? How much did the Bard and his contemporaries know about the foreign lands his characters often inhabit? What expectations did an audience have if the curtains rose on a play which claimed to take place in ancient Troy or the Pyrenean kingdom of Navarre in northern Spain?            Mapping Shakespeare’s World explores these questions with surprising results. It has often been said that setting is irrelevant to Shakespeare’s plays—that, wherever they are set, their enduring appeal lies in their ability to speak to broad questions of human nature. Peter Whitfield shows that, on the contrary, many of Shakespeare’s locations were carefully chosen for their ability to convey subtle meanings an Elizabethan audience would have picked up on and understood. Through the use of paintings, drawings, contemporary maps and geographical texts, Whitfield suggests answers to such questions as where Illyria was located, why The Merry Wives of Windsor could only have taken place in Windsor, and how two utterly different comedies—The Comedy of Errors and Pericles, Prince of Tyre—both came to take place in ancient Ephesus.             Just when one might think there was nothing more to be said about Shakespeare, with Mapping Shakespeare’s World, Whitfield offers a fascinating new point of view.

This collection of essays shows Dickens as one of the greatest visionaries of the city in all its variety and cruelty. GREAT IDEAS. Throughout history, some books have changed the world. They have transformed the way we see ourselves - and each other. They have inspired debate, dissent, war and revolution. They have enlightened, outraged, provoked and comforted. They have enriched lives - and destroyed them. Now Penguin brings you the works of the great thinkers, pioneers, radicals and visionaries whose ideas shook civilization and helped make us who we are.

Modern Classics The Orwell Diaries

Product : Modern Classics The Orwell Diaries
Category : Books
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : George Orwell was an inveterate keeper of diaries. The Orwell Diaries presents eleven of them, covering the period 1931-1949, and follows Orwell from his early years as a writer to his last literary notebook. An entry from 1931 tells of a communal shave in the Trafalgar Square fountains, while notes from his travels through industrial England show the development of the impassioned social commentator. This same acute power of observation is evident in his diaries from Morocco, as well as at home, where his domestic diaries chart the progress of his garden and animals with a keen eye; the wartime diaries, from descriptions of events overseas to the daily violence closer to home, describe astutely his perspective on the politics of both, and provide a new and entirely refreshing insight into Orwell''s character and his great works.

Her life coincided with one of the great turning-points of history: the recognition of Christianity as the religion of the Roman Empire. Max Weber on Capitalism, Bureaucracy and Religion

Product : Max Weber on Capitalism, Bureaucracy and Religion
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : For this important selection from Weber, sections of text from Weber''s major works (Gesammelte, Aufsatze Zur Religionssoziologie, includingThe Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism; General Economic History; andThe Agrarian Sociology of Ancient Civilisations) have been carefully edited and substantially translated to form a coherent and integrated volume.Professor Andreski''s aim has been to use Weber''s own works to explain crucial turns in the evolution of societies and cultures, while eliminating the difficulties of language and frequent mistranslation which have previously made Weber so difficult and baffling for students new to his work.An essay by Andreski introduces the selections, which are centred on Weber''s principal interest, the relationship between capitalism, religion and bureaucracy. He seeks to correct those misinterpretations of Weber''s work which have stressed his classification, rather than his attempts to theorise and explain social phenomena on the basis of a comparitive analysis of universal historical trends. This book was first published in 1983.

Change-Friendly Leadership: How to Transform Good Intentions into Great Performance

Product : Change-Friendly Leadership: How to Transform Good Intentions into Great Performance
Category : Books>Business and Finance>Management and Leadership
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 6
Description : Why do so many clergy burnout in midlife, leaving ministries they''ve diligently shepherded? The phenomenon has become an epidemic, with an estimated 1,500 pastors leaving the ministry each month in the United States alone. Bishop Trevor Walters draws on his more than three decades as an Anglican priest and counselor, to show how so many professionals (not just clergy) burnout at around age 50. Contrary to popular assumption, the author explains that the primary cause of burnout is not stress, as we thought . . .Rather, burnout is the result of an internal conflict. (Many high-stress professions have relatively low burnout rates.) Lacking affirmation from parents (particularly fathers) during their formative years, many professionals seek to get affirmation from those they serve, a path to inevitable burnout. With collaboration from psychiatrist Jim Stanley, M.D. Walters offers hope by demonstrating that recognizing this source of burnout, far from being a fatal diagnosis, is the first necessary step to seeking the healing available through the Great Physician Jesus Christ. The author looks as a pattern for relationships to the example of the Heavenly Father''s relationship with Jesus during his Incarnate Son''s earthly ministry. When earthly fathers fall short, real injury is imparted to their children. But seeing, understanding, and acknowledging the injury can set the course for genuine healing and genuine forgiveness. Dr. Stanley, a Stanford University and Yale Medical School trained psychiatrist, affirms that the author''s observations and therapy are consistent with current practices in psychiatry, and that they hold true for highfunctioning professionals in a variety of fields. While the insights offered are vital for counselors and psychiatrists treating those suffering from External Affirmation Syndrome (EAS), the book is also valuable, and very accessible, for lay people seeking to understand their own struggles or those of a loved one.

Thee, great Achilles! might devoted Troy Through ten long years in tedious siege employ; But ere yon orb''s uprising beams decline, O''er vanquish''d foes the triumph shall be mine. E''en now (as husbandmen with pale dismay View lowering clouds o''erspread the light of day, Uncertain whom the gathering storm await) The bands of Susa tremble for their fate; Rich in her ivory gifts, her golden stores, My proud array Ecbatana deplores; And all her Gods Persepolis in vain Invokes to save from War''s impending reign; The last sole glory that survives to all, Alone by Alexander''s hand to fall. I come--again her gates of brass behold Submissive Babylon for me unfold; For me Euphrates views with calm delight '' The lengthening arch his sever''d shores unite; Of clattering hoofs loud rise the echoing peals As o''er the ramparts bound my chariot wheel''. I come,--I come;--another Chief succeeds, Where fierce Hystaspes urged his foaming steeds; Where, deck''d with spoils from suppliant Lydia won, In triumph pass''d Mandane''s honour''d son; And, far above thy gentler sex severe, '' Thine, bold Semiramis! was fame''s career. Then shall I haste, on eagle pinion borne, To rosy chambers of the orient morn, Stretch my wide sway o''er Indian tribes controll''d, And quaff the mighty floods that teem with gold. Thus, when no more can subject earth afford One spot unconquer''d by this dreaded sword, Each humbled nation shall my yoke sustain, And Alexander o''er the world shall reign. E''en now afar, delightful to mine ear, '' War''s brazen notes...

Description : Excerpt: ...of those on shore, seen to have the French flag flying at their mast-heads. There were five large ships and two smaller ones. It was hoped that they were bringing reinforcements of sound Protestants who would establish their faith in the land, and contribute to the material progress of the colony. As they drew nearer, salutes were exchanged, and they came to an anchor close to the fleet. The voyagers when they landed were warmly received by their countrymen, who did their best to treat them hospitably. There were people of all ranks, and from all parts of France. Several who had come in one of the larger ships were known to the count, who received them into his house. They stated that the fleet consisted originally of but three ships; but, as they were on the point of sailing, they were joined by two others conveying persons of whom they had been able to obtain no certain information. Villegagnon received all in his usual courteous way, but it was observed that he paid the most attention to those on board the latter ships. Before long it was whispered that among those people had been seen two men, who, though in secular dresses, were recognised as having been Romish priests. Still, though the people who had come in these two ships did not make their appearance at the Protestant place of worship to return thanks for their safe voyage, they were not seen to practise any of the rites of the Romish Church. Unpleasant rumours were, however, going about among the settlers, and the people asked one another how it was that the governor, who had professed to form a pure Protestant colony, should have allowed Romanists to come out among them. No satisfactory answer could be given to these questions, and some thought that the new-comers were possibly lately converted from Rome, and would soon come to receive instruction from Monsieur Laporte. Others, however, shook their heads, and observed that, had they been new converts, they would have exhibited more...

Description : Excerpt: ...protestant cause within his reach; and she sent instead her cousin the earl of Worcester, a good simple gentleman, as Leicester called him, and a catholic. All this time Elizabeth was in her heart as hostile to the court of France as the most zealous of her protestant subjects; for she well knew that it was and -27--vol ii- ever must be essentially hostile to her and her government; and in the midst of her civilities she took care to supply to the Hugonots such secret aids as should enable them still to persevere in a formidable resistance. It is worth recording, on the subject of these negotiations between Elizabeth and the royal family of France, that Burleigh seems to have been encouraged to expect a successful issue by a calculation of the queen''s nativity, seen by Strype in his own handwriting, from which it was foretold that she should marry, in middle life, a foreign prince younger than herself; and probably be the mother of a son, who should be prosperous in his middle age. Catherine de'' Medici also, to whom some female fortune-teller had predicted that all her sons should be kings, hoped, after the election of her second son to the throne of Poland, to find the full accomplishment of the prophecy in the advancement of the youngest to the matrimonial crown of England. So serious was the belief of that age in the lying oracles of judicial astrology! Among the English travellers doomed to be eye-witnesses of the horrors of the massacre of St. Bartholomew was the celebrated Philip Sidney, then a youth of eighteen. He was the eldest son of sir Henry Sidney, lord-deputy of Ireland, and from this excellent man and parent he had received, amongst his earliest and strongest impressions, those elevated principles of honor, veracity and moral purity which regulated and adorned the whole tenor of his after-life. An extraordinary solidity of character with great -28--vol ii- vivacity of parts had distinguished him from a child, and fortune conspired...

Beginnings Of The American People

Description : Excerpt: ... of Utrecht no attempt was made to transform the commercial code into a colonial system. And even the commercial code was administered in a gentlemanlike and easy-going fashion: little was embitered and nothing solved. Of many circumstances which contributed to this result, the effect of the Revolution on English politics was fundamental. Kings who ruled by grace of a statute, instead of by divine right, inevitably lost administrative as well as legislative authority. Colonial policy was therefore no longer determined, as in Stuart times, by the king in council, but by the ministers; by ministers who might listen to the Board of Trade, but could not take advice unless it squared with the wishes of the Parliament that made them. When, in 1715, Secretary Stanhope appointed George Vaughan, an owner of sawmills in New Hampshire, to be lieutenant-governor of that province, the Board of Trade protested; and quoted, in support of its protest, the remarks of Bellomont about Mr. Partridge. To set a carpenter to preserve woods, said Bellomont, is like setting a wolf to guard sheep; I say, to preserve woods, for I take it to be the chiefest part of the business of a Lt. Governor of that province to preserve the woods for the king''s use. The protest was ignored; and for thirty years, while the Board of Trade fell almost to the level of a joke, the colonies were managed by a Secretary of State who was likely to be less interested in preserving the woods for the king''s use than in advancing the interests of the Whig oligarchy which governed England. It could not well have been otherwise. The Whig oligarchy, having driven the Stuarts from the throne, was bound to identify the welfare of the empire with the maintenance of the House of Hanover. Convinced that so long as there was peace and plenty in the land Jacobite exiles would wait in vain for the day when the body of James II, lying unburied in the church of St. Jacques, might be restored to English soil,...

Description : Excerpt: ...scar for life! He will think you an ungrateful girl if you don''t go at once and make your apologies. For answer Hazel, surreptitiously brushing away the tears, swept past her aunt and 152 locked herself into her own little private stateroom. She rushed eagerly to the window which was partly open, guarded with a screen, and pressed her face against the upper part of the glass. The train had described a curve across the prairie, and the station was still visible, though far away. She was sure she could see the tall figure of her lover standing with hat in hand watching her as she passed from his sight. With quick impulse she caught up a long white crepe scarf that lay on her berth, and snatching the screen from the window fluttered the scarf out to the wind. Almost instantly a flutter of white came from the figure on the platform, and her heart quickened with joy. They had sent a message from heart to heart across the wide space of the plains, and the wireless telegraphy of hearts was established. Great tears rushed to blot the last flutter of white from the receding landscape, and then a hill loomed brilliant and shifting, and in a moment more shut out the sight of station and dim group and Hazel knew that she was back in the world of commonplace things once more, with only a memory for her company, amid a background of unsympathetic relatives. 153 She made her toilet in a leisurely way, for she dreaded to have to talk as she knew she would, and dreaded still more to meet Hamar. But she knew she must go and tell her father of her experiences, and presently she came out to them fresh and beautiful, with eyes but the brighter for her tears, and a soft wild-rose flush on her wind-browned cheeks that made her beauty all the sweeter. They clamoured at once, of course, for all the details of her experience, and began by rehearsing once more how hard Mr. Hamar had tried to save her from her terrible plight, risking his life to stop her horse. Hazel said...

In the course of the narrative he discovered that his new associates were an unusually rough set. Their language was interspersed with frightful oaths, and their references to the captain showed that his power over them was certainly not founded on goodwill or affection. Jarwin also discovered that the freeness of his communication was not reciprocated by his new mates, for when he made inquiries as to the nature of the trade in which they were engaged, some of the men merely replied with uproarious laughter, chaff, or curses, while others made jocular allusions to sandal-wood trading, slaving, etcetera.

And now what are we to do wid these beauties, Jack? asked Jimmie, as he also arose and stretched himself; for his long vigil among the branches of that tree had, as he declared, tied him all up in a knot. Take them along with us and hand them over to the authorities at Memphis, if we get no chance nearer. Suppose you stay here with them just now, Jimmie. While you drop over to the other cove and see what they do be havin'' in that motor boat of theirs, observed the Irish boy, cheerfully. Just as ye say, Jack. Ye know bist, and I''m riddy to folly orders. But don''t be too long, if ye plaise. It moight be lonely for me, I''m thinkin''. Jack came back inside of fifteen minutes, during which time Jimmie had sat there by the resurrected fire, holding the precious Martin, and keeping a close watch over the two bound robbers. Ye found it, all roight, I say, Jack? announced the guardian of the camp, as he noticed that his chum was toting a fair-sized satchel. Yes, the other answered, this holds the stuff they carried off, and which Mr. Gregory, the president of that Waverly bank, will be mightily glad to get hold of again. But I know now just why they were so anxious to capture us. They did be thinkin'' we was sint afther thim, so I belaved, Jimmie observed. That may be so, said Jack; but there was another reason. They had need of our boat. But, by the powers, they had wan jist as good; how could they use both, Jack? Theirs has got a big hole punched in the bow, and must have hit a rock just when they started to come into the cove. They had tried to mend it, but I guess that''s a job for a practical boatbuilder and not for amateurs. We''ll have to let it stay here, and take our prisoners along in the Tramp. Even so, retorted Bakahenzie; then is water stronger than beer, even as the beer does reveal? Birnier nearly smiled in recognition of the hit. Nay, does not beer make the fool to talk foolishness? Dost thou then cast away the banana? Does not one pg 165 talk foolishness also who is sick and yet discardeth good medicine, because he feareth to poison his belly? Even so, said Bakahenzie obstinately, does the sick man exorcise the good medicine lest an enemy hath made magic thereupon? Then, said Birnier, whose only objection to the ceremony was the delay and the messiness, let the good medicine be purified. Bakahenzie grunted and covertly took stock of the tent and equipment visible. Upon the pile of cases stacked just inside the tent his eyes rested some time, but he would not make any inquiry. Marufa, too, was occupied in the same manner. Bakahenzie was recalling the previous meeting with Birnier in the village of MFunya MPopo -of that day when Birnier had not made any attempt to impress the native mind with magic other than the ordinary miracles in the routine of a white man''s life. When the Son-of-the-Snake, inquired Birnier, who had learned as much of the hagiocracy as Mungongo knew, hath taken up the Burden, wilt thou then drive Eyes-in-the-hands from the country? Bakahenzie slowly withdrew his eyes from the fascinating case as far as Birnier''s booted foot. Hast thou, white man, the magic twig that makes fire? he demanded. Even so. Birnier took a box of matches from his pocket and struck one. Bakahenzie and Marufa watched him solemnly. Then a lean bronze hand was outstretched. Birnier gave him the box. Slowly and gravely Bakahenzie, pg 166 the chief witch-doctor, extracted a match, turned it over and over, smelt it, tasted it,...

Description : Excerpt: ...drove the bees off, they dug their nest out; it was beautifully built in regular cells of gray paper, and there was a little honey in it; about a spoonful for each boy. Frank was glad that he had not let out his disappointment with the kind of Fourth they were having; and just then the horn sounded from the house for dinner, and the boys all got into the wagon, and rattled off to the barn. They put out the horses and fed them, and as soon as they could wash themselves at the rain-barrel behind the house, they went in and sat down with the family at dinner. It was a farmer''s dinner, as it used to be in southern Ohio fifty years ago: a deep dish of fried salt pork swimming in its own fat, plenty of shortened biscuit and warm green-apple sauce, with good Pg 114 butter. The Boy''s Town boys did not like the looks of the fat pork, but they were wolf-hungry, and the biscuit were splendid. In the middle of the table there was a big crock of buttermilk, all cold and dripping from the spring-house where it had been standing in the running water; then there was a hot apple-pie right out of the oven; and they made a pretty fair meal, after all. After dinner they hauled more rails, and when they had hauled all the rails there were, they started for the swimming-hole in the creek. On the way they came to a mulberry-tree in the edge of the woods-pasture, and it was so full of berries and they were so ripe that the grass which the cattle had cropped short was fairly red under the tree. The boys got up into the tree and gorged themselves among the yellow-hammers and woodpeckers; and Frank and Jake kept holloing out to each other how glad they were they had come; but Dave kept quiet, and told them to wait till they came to the swimming-hole. It was while they were in the tree that Pg 115 something happened which happened four times in all that day, if it really happened: nobody could say afterwards whether it had or not. Description : Excerpt: ...their intended victim, who had confessed, still remains unarraigned behind prison bars. Such cumulative perversities of fate bewilder the Laniers. They daily become more perplexed. Paul''s recital of events at Bombay, preceding his departure for Calcutta, alarmed and mystified his father, who could suggest no plausible theory for such ghostly groupings. It is now sure that the Laniers dare not risk further attempt at removal of either William or Mary Dodge. They would be suspected. It will be dangerous longer to remain in Calcutta, with the Dodges liable at any time to make more startling confessions. There is fear that both Laniers still are shadowed and may be arrested for one or more offenses. Strange that no charge was preferred against them for their murderous assaults on William and Mary Dodge. There could be no doubt in this case, and the proofs would be overwhelming. To Pierre Lanier''s crafty, well-informed intelligence this phase is most alarming. While much relieved by failure of the authorities to press this charge, he feels convinced that such official laches were prompted by overpowering motives, boding more serious dangers. Large moneyed interests or the running down of capital 209 offenders, must be the ends justifying such laxity of official zeal. There is a strong impulse toward immediate flight, restrained through fear that their every act is being watched. Each day the mazes of this labyrinth grow more puzzling. While Pierre and Paul feel the tentacles of this octopus contracting around their guilty souls, the persons and agencies which they doubt not are tightening these irresistible coils, foiled, perplexed, and chagrined, have no well-defined ideas upon the subject. Neither Sir Donald Randolph nor the London detective agency ever aided, abetted, or advised this strange proceeding, nor did those employed by Sir Donald to ferret out Lanier crimes know aught concerning any part of such proposed move, except that he had interfered...

May I have another drink? Malone gave her a grin. Another? he said. Have two. Have a dozen. And what, she said, would I do with a dozen drinks? Don''t answer. I think I can guess. But let''s just take them one at a time, okay? She signaled to the bartender. Wally, I''ll have a martini. And Mr. Malone will have whatever it is he has, I imagine. Bourbon and soda, Malone said, and gave the bartender a grin too, just to make sure he didn''t feel left out. The sun was shining (although it was evening outside), and the birds were singing (although, Malone reflected, catching a bird on 42nd Street and Broadway might take a bit of doing), and all was well with the world. There was only a tiny, nagging, disturbing thought in his mind. It had to do with Mike Fueyo and the Silent Spooks, and a lot of red Cadillacs. But he pushed it resolutely away. It had nothing to do with the evening he was about to spend. Nothing at all. After all, this was supposed to be a vacation, wasn''t it? Well, Mr. Malone, Dorothy said, when the drinks had arrived. Very well indeed, Malone said, raising his. And just call me Ken. Didn''t I tell you that once before? You did, she said. And I asked you to call me Dorothy. Not Dotty. Try and remember that. I will remember it, Malone said, just as long as ever I live. You don''t look the least bit dotty, anyhow. Which is probably more than anybody could say for me. He started to look at himself in the bar mirror again, and decided not to. By the way, he added, as a sudden thought struck him. Dotty what? Now, she said. There you go doing it. Doing what? Calling me that name. Oh, Malone said. Make it Dorothy. Dorothy what? He blinked. I mean, I know you''ve got a last name. Dorothy Something. Only it probably isn''t Something....

In the subsequent proceedings 162 delegates, including all of New York''s 72, 45 of New England''s 77, 18 of New Jersey''s 20, and 19 of Wisconsin''s 24 took no part whatever. Before Bryan spoke, a majority of the silver delegates probably favored Hon. Richard P. Bland, of Missouri, father of the Bland Act, as the presidential candidate, but the first balloting showed a change. Upon the fifth ballot Bryan received 500 votes, a number which changes before the result was announced increased to the required two-thirds. Arthur Sewall, of Maine, was the nominee for Vice-President. Mr. Bryan, then barely thirty-six, was the youngest man ever nominated for the presidency. He was born in Salem, Ill., March 19, 1860. His father was a man of note, having served eight years in the Illinois Senate, and afterwards upon the circuit bench. Young Bryan passed his youth on his father''s farm, near Salem, and at Illinois College, Jacksonville, where he graduated in 1881 with oratorical honors. Having read law in Chicago, and in 1887 been admitted to the bar, he removed to Lincoln, Neb., and began practising law. Mr. Bryan was inclined to politics, and his singular power on the platform drew attention to him as an available candidate. In 1890 he was elected to Congress as a Democrat. He served two terms, declining a third nomination. In 1894 he became editor of the Omaha World-Herald, but later resumed the practice of law. In Nebraska, as in some other Western States, Republicans so outnumbered Democrats that Populist aid was indispensable in any State or congressional contest. In 1892 it had been eagerly courted on Cleveland''s behalf. Bryan had helped in consummating fusion between Populism and Democracy in Nebraska. This occasioned the unjust charge that he was no Democrat. The allegation gained credence when the Populist national convention at St. Louis placed him...

Description : Excerpt: ...eying me quizzically. What was that noise? What noise? I asked. Sounded as though that precious cuff-link of yours had dropped into the water. He started for me, and as he did so, I bent down quickly and plunged my arm into the water. My fingers closed on the revolver just as he came bounding toward me. With a quick shove I pushed it far into the soft clay of the bank, and, grabbing a rock off the bottom of the creek, withdrew my arm from the water and slipped the rock into my pocket. The red-faced little detective was peering over my shoulder as I turned. Rarely have I seen a man so angry. Give me what you pulled out of that creek! he almost screamed. What for, Inspector? I asked quietly. Never mind what for. You give me what you found in that creek, or I''ll- he grabbed me by the shoulder. All right, I said; all right, Inspector, don''t get so excited over nothing. It''s yours. I pulled the muddy rock from my coat pocket and gravely handed it to him. It was only an ordinary, every-day rock. I didn''t know you were a geologist. He pounced on me and ran his fingers over my person. Red-faced, he surveyed me. I ain''t a geologist, but I am a criminologist, and just one more of your monkey tricks like that and I''ll put you where you''ll have time to study a lot of rocks and do a lot of thinkin'' before bein'' funny again. Now, you get out! Get into that car as quick as you can, if you know what''s good for you! Hoping I could retrieve the revolver later, and realizing that nothing could be gained by staying there longer, I started toward the car. I had hardly taken five steps when I heard a joyful yell and turned to see Robinson struggling to his feet, the muddy revolver in his hand. Here''s your cuff-link, he cried. Before I''m through you''ll find that this ain''t a cuff-link, but a necklace for the neck of that pretty sister of yours. You, with your Socialists and your cuff-buttons, tryin'' to keep me from gettin'' what I go after. Well, it...

Is it time to get supper? Hen''s eggs! This time o'' night an'' dark as pitch. Miranda Griscom, you ken go up to your room an'' not come down tell I call you! It was a dire punishment, or would have been if Miranda had not had her head full of other things, for the neighbor had been asked to tea and there would have been much to hear at the table. Besides, it was apparent that her disgrace was to be made public. However, Miranda did not care. She hastened to her little attic window, which looked down, as good fortune would have it, upon the dining-room windows of the Spafford house. With joy Miranda observed that no pg 183 one had thought to draw down the shades and she might sit and watch the supper served over the way,-the supper she had prepared,-and might think how delectable the doughnuts were, and let her mouth water over the currant jelly and the quince preserves and pretend she was a guest, and forget the supper downstairs she was missing. pg 184 CHAPTER XVI David made what apology he could for his absence on the arrival of his guests, and pondered in his heart who it could have been that they referred to as the maid, until he suddenly remembered Miranda, and inwardly blessed her for her kindliness. It was more than he would have expected from any member of the Heath household. Miranda''s honest face among the currant bushes when she had said, You needn''t be afraid of me, I''ll keep still, came to mind. Miranda had evidently scented out the true state of the case and filled in the breach, taking care not to divulge a word. He blest her kindly heart and resolved to show his gratitude to her in some way. Could poor Miranda, sitting supperless in the dark, have but known his thought, her lonely heart would have fluttered happily. But she did...

It was a massive stone edifice, built in an antique style, and black with age, with a broad esplanade between it and the river, on which, mixed with a few people from the fair, I observed moving about a great many individuals in quaint dresses of blue, with strange three-cornered hats on their heads; most of them were mutilated; this had a wooden leg

Description : Excerpt: ... the meat and drink provided by the hostess were of the best. Thus Mrs Pansey''s entertainments were usually the most successful of the Beorminster season. On this auspicious occasion the clerk of the weather had granted the hostess an especially fine day. Sunshine filled the cloudless arch of the blue sky; the air was warm, but tempered by a softly-blowing breeze; and the guests, to do honour at once to Mrs Pansey and the delightful weather, wore their most becoming and coolest costumes. Pretty girls laughed in the sunshine; matrons gossiped beneath the rustling trees; and the sober black coats of the clerical element subdued the too vivid tints of the feminine frippery. The scene was animated and full of colour and movement, so that even Mrs Pansey''s grim countenance expanded into an unusual smile when Pg 163 greeting fresh arrivals. At intervals a band played lively dance music; there was croquet and lawn-tennis for the young; iced coffee and scandal for the old. Altogether, the company, being mostly youthful and unthinking, was enjoying itself immensely, as the chatter and laughter, and smiling and bowing amply testified. ''Altogether, I may regard it as a distinct success,'' said Mrs Pansey, as, attired in her most Hamlet-like weeds, she received her guests under the shade of a many-coloured Japanese umbrella. ''And the gardens really look nice.'' ''The gardens of Paradise!'' observed the complimentary Cargrim, who was smirking at the elbow of his hostess. ''Don''t distort Holy Writ, if

Pg 191 After a while it forgot its name, and went back to the Lord. Lord, what is my name? Ass! After a while it came back again. Excuse me, Lord, what is my name? Ass, ass! The ass turned and went away, but forgot it another time, and came back. Lord, I have forgotten my name. The Lord could not stand it any longer, but seized its ears and pulled them sharply, exclaiming: Ass! Ass! Ass! The ears were pulled so hard that they became long, and that is why the ass has long ears, and why we pull a person''s ears to keep him from forgetting a thing. Another legend relates that when Christ was journeying through the world he happened, dying with thirst, to enter a town. He saw a woman combing her hair, and said: Will you give me a drink of water? for I am dying of thirst. I am busy; it is not the time for water! Christ said at once: Cursed be the braid That is braided Friday. And continued his journey. After a time he saw a woman making dough for bread. Good woman, will you give me a drink of water? As much as you will! and went and drew some water and gave him. Christ said: Blessed be the dough That is kneaded on Friday. Hence it is that certain women are accustomed not to comb their hair on Friday. There is a satirical legend, called The Lord''s Will, which relates that when Christ came to leave the world, he was in doubt as to whom to leave all on the earth. If he left it to the gentlemen, what would the nobility do? if to the nobility, what would become of the gentry, and the workmen, and the peasants? While He was reflecting, the noblemen came and asked the Lord to give them everything, which he did. Then the priests came; and when they were told that everything had been given to the nobility, Oh! the devil! they exclaimed. Then I leave you the devil, said the Lord. To the monks, who,...

Description : Excerpt: ...The uniform rate of wages for Europeans was an ounce of gold per week, the value thereof being about 3 12s. 6d. With my first earnings I bought some double width unbleached calico and a palm and needle. By means of these I made myself a small tent. The cost of the material was about seventeen shillings, and the work was easily finished in the course of four or five evenings. I had not been living in this tent for more than ten days when a man, who was about to start on a prospecting trip, bought it over my head for 1pound 15s. I must have made, and sold at a profit, quite a dozen tents during my stay at Pilgrim's Rest. In fact I soon got to be known as "that chap who always has a tent to sell." When a purchaser came along I would deliver the tent at once, and move my few belongings to the dwelling of some friend or another who happened to have room to spare. I lived very sparingly indeed; two shillings per diem paid for my food and tobacco. I hoarded every penny like a miser. I longed to prospect, to explore; but before attempting this it was necessary to have a few pounds in hand. On Sundays it was my habit to walk to the top of the "Divide," the backbone of the mountain range. On one side of it lay Pilgrim's Rest, on the other "Mac Mac," another mining camp so called on account of most of the diggers there in the first instance having been Scotsmen. From this lofty coign I could occasionally get far and faint glimpses of the mysterious "Low Country," which was just visible (in clear weather) over the intervening precipice-edged plateau which lay beyond the Mac Mac and Waterfall Creeks. Sixty miles away to the north-east, but clearly visible in the rarefied mountain air, towered the mighty gates through which the Olifant River roared down to meet the Letaba. On their left the great ranges rolled away to the infinite north-west. What direction first to explore in? That was a difficult question to decide, seeing that the field for adventure was...

The latter, with his principal wagon, had been removed that morning, when the settler started with his family on their hasty flight northward to the settlement of Barwell; but the timber was dry, and enough hay was stored in the loft to render the building very combustible. It was to this structure that the Sioux had applied the torch, and at the moment the smoke rolled in front of the house the whole building was in flames. Unfortunately, there was a gentle breeze blowing 70 from the barn directly toward the house, and it was because of this favoring fact that the former was fired. The marauders had every reason to believe the flames would soon communicate with the dwelling and burn it to the ground. The barn faced the end with the broad stone chimney, through which Red Feather made his singular entrance. It was therefore out of the field of vision of the inmates, since there was not a single window up or down stairs with an outlook in that direction. Melville started to run down the steps on making the startling discovery, but met Red Feather coming up with one hand grasping that of Dot. My gracious! exclaimed the youth; what can be done now, Red Feather? We shall all be burned alive. Oogh! not yet

Description : Excerpt: ...out to be a frame-up, Burton will be with us, and we can hand him a sample of our regards. Very well, said the motor wizard. Lead the way, Burton. Burton moved down the walk to the first cross street, proceeded halfway along the block, and halted in front of a small bungalow with a deep porch. Here''s where Captain Hogan stays when he''s in Avalon and ashore, remarked Burton, in a guarded tone. Can''t see any light, murmured Hill. Looks like the place was empty. I should say, at a guess, put in Clancy, that the captain is not at home. He may be aboard the Sylvia. We''re not looking for Hogan, but for Wynn and Katz, continued Burton. I''ll not leave this place until I investigate a bit. He began climbing the steps that led to the porch. Clancy was still very distrustful of Burton, and watched warily while following the fellow to the front door of the house. Burton seemed straight enough. With a soft hand he tried the door, and discovered it to be locked. Moving thence to a window that opened upon the porch, he tried to raise the lower sash. It was secured. Maybe I can open the sash lock, he whispered to Clancy. If it''s the ordinary kind, a knife will do the trick. He took a jackknife from his pocket, opened a blade, thrust it upward between the upper and lower sash, and maneuvered for a minute or two. Finally he gave vent to a muttered word of satisfaction, closed the knife, and slipped it into his pocket. Here''s a little luck, said he. We can open the window now. Noiselessly the lower sash was lifted, and the way into the bungalow was open. You can stay here, whispered Burton, or you can go with me. If you''re afraid to trust me, I can look around and report what I find. I''ll go with you, returned Clancy. I don''t want to take your report about what you...

Description : Excerpt: ...were worn out, they were constrained to supply their place with deer-skin jackets and leggins, generally painted and fringed after the fashion of the natives. Thus Lieutenant Tonti, at the council of the chiefs, in general appearance resembled the rest. But the Christian Fathers always wore a long black gown. As we have mentioned, they were called by that name among all the tribes, The Black Gowns. Their teachings, their ministerings at the couches of the sick and dying, their utter renunciation of the character of warriors, and their self-denying devotion to the welfare of the Indians, had caused them to be generally revered. But, among the untutored tribes as in almost every village of our land, there were certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, who hated the clergy. Father Membré, with that calm, peaceful Christian chivalry which cannot be surpassed amidst the tumult and carnage of the field of battle, offered to accompany Lieutenant Tonti on his mission of peace. The two opposing forces were facing each other, with the space of perhaps an eighth of a mile between them. Both parties were concealed, as far as possible, though occasionally the nodding plumes of a warrior were visible, as he moved from one hiding-place to another. Lieutenant Tonti, holding high above his head, as a flag of truce, the gorgeously decorated calumet of peace, accompanied by Father Membré in his long, flowing black robe, boldly moved forward toward the Iroquois encampment. Several of the chiefs met him, and were surprised to find that he was a Frenchman. He addressed them in their own language, in substance as follows: I bring you the calumet of peace. The Illinois, against whom you are waging war, are our brothers. They are the friends and allies of the French. The great father in Canada is the protector both of the Iroquois and of the Illinois. He cannot see one destroy the other. The chiefs were deeply impressed by this...

Of course all the people on the train were getting out at New York, for the simple reason that the train did not go any farther. At any other time the girls would have been tremendously pleased about going to New York. But now, with the even more wonderful prospect of Florida looming up, New York appealed to them simply as a means to an end. It''s that fat man at the end, hissed Bess in Nan''s ear. He''s holding up the whole procession. What''s he talking about, anyway? Sh-h, whispered Nan. He may hear you. For goodness'' sake, Nan Sherwood, I wonder you don''t have a record made of that question and then turn it on every five minutes or so, said Bess, Pg 124 whose temper was beginning to be ruffled by the delay. That''s all I hear from morning to night. ''Are you sure you have everything?'' I think I''ll try it on you and see how you like it. Oh, I''d love it, cried Nan, with such fervor that Bess looked at her in surprise. It''s this bag, explained Nan, looking down at her own handsome suitcase. I''m certain it will be stolen or I''ll lose it or something before we can get to Florida. Well, it is an expensive suitcase, Bess admitted, as the fat man at the front of the car finished his argument with the conductor and the line of passengers moved slowly on toward the door. But you never used to lie awake at night worrying about it. It was Nan''s turn to look her amazement. It isn''t the bag I''m worrying about, and you ought to know that, she said in a low voice. It''s what is in the bag. Oh! said Bess, suddenly remembering, you mean those papers Mrs. Bragley gave you? Well, I wouldn''t worry about them, she added carelessly. But above everything else that is in this work, most marvellous is the gesture that the aforesaid Blessed Michelina is making towards certain usurers, who are disbursing to her the money from the sale of her possessions for giving to the poor, seeing that in her there is shown contempt of money and of the other things of this earth, which appear to disgust her, and, in them, the personification of human avarice and greed. Very beautiful, too, is the figure of one who, while counting the money, appears to be making sign to the notary who is writing, considering that, although he has his eyes on the notary, he is yet keeping his hands on the money, thus revealing his love of it, his avarice, and his distrust. In like manner, the three figures that are upholding the garments of S. Francis in the sky, representing Obedience, Patience, and Poverty, are worthy of infinite praise, above all because there is in the manner of the draperies a natural flow of folds that gives us to know that Giotto was born in order to give light to painting. Besides this, he portrayed Signor Malatesta on a ship in this work, so naturally that he appears absolutely alive; and some mariners and Pg 85 other people, in their promptness, their expressions, and their attitudes

Description : Excerpt: ...whole, too, there are but few people in the world more loyal and more kind-hearted than those in what a great divine used to call, Dear, black, old, smoky Lancashire. But in the dead of the winter, and to a man with the shadow of the gallows resting upon him, there can be no place in the world so little to be desired. The black night of despair was resting upon Paul''s heart. On the morrow the great trial would commence, and although he thought he had arranged everything perfectly, he could not help fearing the results. And then, while his thoughts were at their blackest, he heard a voice which thrilled his being and caused every nerve to quiver with delight. This is the one, he heard a warder say. And a minute later he was alone with Mary Bolitho. CHAPTER XVII THE LOVERS Had anyone told Mary Bolitho, even when her father consented for her to accompany him to Lancashire, that she would have sought admission into Paul''s cell, she would have repudiated the idea. Even while she could not help believing that there was some awful mistake, and that Paul was utterly incapable of such a deed, she felt that there was nothing for her to do. When she arrived in Lancashire, however, and the assizes had commenced, she realised the terrible issues at stake. If Paul were found guilty, he would be hanged. The thought was like a death-knell in her heart, and all its grim horror possessed her. Day by day passed away, and she could not shake it off. She pictured Paul lying in Strangeways Gaol, waiting his trial, and realised something of the loneliness and the terror which must have encompassed his life. One day, while visiting a shop in Market Street, she heard some people talking. He''s said no word, I suppose? said one man. I''ve never heard of anything. A curious business, isn''t it? Ay, very curious. It don''t seem right, somehow, that a man like Paul Stepaside should do such a thing. Of course, the jury will have to go upon evidence, and the evidence is...

If we could dismiss the subject by saying she reports instance after instance where men and Pg 145 women were confined in the almshouses in Massachusetts in such conditions of inhumanity and neglect as no intelligent farmer would tolerate for his swine, we could avoid some unpleasant details; but the statement would be ineffective because it would seem incredible. At the almshouse in Danvers, confined in a remote, low, outbuilding, she found a young woman, once respectable, industrious and worthy, whose mind had been deranged by disappointments and trials. There she stood, says Miss Dix, clinging to or beating upon the bars of her caged apartment, the contracted size of which afforded space only for increasing accumulations of filth,

Description : Excerpt: ... If I were Sebastiano now, it would be different. He stopped suddenly and rubbed his head, as his habit was when he was startled or confused, and his face became rather red. Perhaps this was because he remembered that among all the rest, the magnificent, the illustrious, the beautiful Sebastiano was the one to whom she showed least grace. In fact it was almost mysterious, her manner toward him. They had seen him often

Description : Excerpt: ... and more than once difficulty had been averted, and Dolly''s heart warmed again toward her lover, when she had been half inclined to rebel and exhibit some slight sharpness of temper. Only a few days after the conversation with which the present chapter opens occurred, one of these modestly powerful missives was forwarded, and that evening Griffith met with an agreeable surprise. Chance had taken him into the vicinity of Miss MacDowlas''s establishment, and as he walked down the deserted road in a somewhat gloomy frame of mind, he became conscious suddenly of the sound of small, light feet, running rapidly down the footpath behind him. Griffith! cried a clear, softly pitched voice, Griffith, wait for me. And, turning, he saw in the dusk of the winter day a little figure almost flying toward him, and in a few seconds more Dolly was standing by him, laughing and panting, and holding to his arm with both hands. I thought I should never catch you, she said. You never walked so fast in your life, I believe, you stupid old fellow. I could n''t call out loud, though it is a quiet place, and so I had to begin to run. Goodness! what would Lady Augusta have said if she had seen me ''flying after you! And then, stopping all at once, she looked up at him with a wicked little air of saucy daring. Don''t you want to kiss me? she said. You may, if you will endeavor to effect it with despatch before somebody comes. She was obliged to resign herself to her fate then. For nearly two minutes she found herself rendered almost invisible, and neither of them spoke. Then half released, she lifted her face to look at him, and there were tears on her eyelashes, and in her voice, too, though she was trying very hard to smile. Poor old fellow, she half whispered. Has it seemed long since you kissed me last? He caught her to his breast again in his old, impetuous fashion. Long! he groaned. It has seemed so long that there have been times when it has almost...

Description : Excerpt: ...fail and last not with man, but glide away like a phantom. 86 But when men have got goods together, with right, or with wrong and poor men''s curses, then suddenly, they go from their goods, or else their goods from them. And Holy Writ says The world passeth away and the lust thereof. A man that is fallen in the water, and through the force of the water is borne forth and torn from the ground; if he may get anything that has good fastening like a root or a stake, he may hinder the water from carrying him away; but by anything that fleets as he does himself, he cannot fasten himself: and soothly, willy nilly, in this life, as if in water, we are ever passing with the goods of this world; and there is naught in this world to fasten by, so that we shall not pass: for the Wise Man saith, We shall all die, and like water slip away into the Earth. And therefore Job speaks, as if he said Riches and friends had I many, but they all could not hinder me 87 from going forth and not coming again. And by what path, man shall go, the prophet shews: All flesh is grass, and all the glory of it as the flower of the field. Man''s flesh is as hay, and all his joy and splendour as the flower of the meadow. Hay is first green grass, and soon after brings forth flowers: and a while after, the flowers dry and fall; after it is mown down with the scythe, and dried and taken to a house to be beasts'' food. Thus it befalls man: in his childhood he springs and grows as the grass does; after, he comes to manhood and flowers in fairness and strength and wit and having of goods; afterwards: he draws to age, and then his flowers fall, that are his virtue, fairness, strength, wit and other power; afterwards, he is stricken down with the scythe of Death, afterwards taken to a house to beasts'' food, that is, dug into the earth to feed worms. Therefore says the holy 88 man; when a man dies, he shall dwell with serpents and beasts. A dead man is so disgusting to the world,...

Description : Excerpt: ...Joe had called himself every unpleasant name he could think of for his carelessness. If he had stayed at the door where he belonged, there would have been one of them left to grapple with Dan Cassey. Probably the two men who had been with Cassey when they had surprised him had not been anywhere around. They belonged to the type of criminal that always thinks of its own safety first. Probably they had not been anywhere near the barn. And if it had been only Dan Cassey and himself, well, he, Joe, could at least have given the scoundrel a black eye

Pg 341 The bodily exercise he took had the same object, and further added to the injurious effect of his obstinate fasts. I have not left my room these four days past, he writes in his memorandum, April, 1814, at a moment when his heart was agitated by a passion; but I have been fencing with Jackson an hour a day by way of exercise, so as to get matter under, and give sway to the ethereal part of my nature. The more I fatigue myself, the better my mind is for the rest of the day; and then my evenings acquire that calm, that prostration and languor, that are such a happiness to me. To-day I fenced for an hour, wrote an ode to Napoleon Bonaparte, copied it out, ate six biscuits, drank four bottles of soda-water, read the rest of the time, and then gave a load of advice to poor H

Description : Excerpt: ... manifestation, that it was like the shadow made by the firelight itself. Just beyond and a little to one side of the second form, a third came to view, dimly revealed by the lesser firelight, but with a stillness of movement as absolute as that of the other. Had it been otherwise, the redskin would have discovered their approach. The third Indian, indistinctly shown in the yellow glow, was recognized by Jack as the Sauk Hay-uta; the second was Deerfoot the Shawanoe. The latter smiled in his shadowy way, and shook one finger as a warning to his friend not to betray the presence of himself and companion. Looking in the face of his foe, as though addressing him, the lad said: It''s all right; the next time I wish you would not be so slow in getting here; if you''ll keep still, I''ll give this rascal a tussle that he don''t expect. The warrior must have thought it strange to be addressed in that fashion, and he must have noticed, too, the smile and flitting glances of his victim, but he could not have suspected the meaning of either, or he would have faced the other way. With a partially suppressed shout, he stooped, as if gathering his muscles, and then, like a lion on the edge of a chasm, he made a terrific bound at the captive. But he didn''t reach him. A quick blow of the upraised arm sent his knife spinning in the darkness, and a dexterous flirt of Deerfoot''s moccasin in front of the foot of the Indian, flung him headlong, after the manner of a beginner taking a header from his bicycle. His discomfiture was more complete than that of Lone Bear while pursuing the Shawanoe, for not only was he thrown forward with great violence, but (as was the case with Hay-uta, when he attacked Deerfoot), the knife was knocked from his grasp, by a blow so cleverly given that it seemed to have fractured his forearm. Using mild language again, it might be said that the warrior was surprised. Whatever the cause of his overthrow, he could not mistake its meaning; it...

Description : Excerpt: ...We must go on. 142 VIII THE OTHER GIRL The girl''s voice stirred the benumbed youth into action again, and he followed her mechanically. His slender stock of physical strength was almost gone, but his will remained unbroken. At every rough place she came back to him to support him, to hearten him, and so he crept on through the darkness, falling often, stumbling against the trees, slipping and sliding, till at last his guide, pitching down a sharp slope, came directly upon a wire fence. Glory be! she called. Here is a fence, and the cabin should be near, although I see no light. Hello! Tony! No voice replied, and, keeping Wayland''s hand, she felt her way along the fence till it revealed a gate; then she turned toward the roaring of the stream, which grew louder as they advanced. The cabin is near the falls, that much I know, she assured him. Then a moment later she joyfully cried out: Here it is! Out of the darkness a blacker, sharper shadow 143 rose. Again she called, but no one answered. The ranger is away, she exclaimed, in a voice of indignant alarm. I do hope he left the door unlocked. Too numb with fatigue, and too dazed by the darkness to offer any aid, Wayland waited

THE ICE MAIDEN. MTTLE RUDY. LET us pay a visit to Switzerland. Let us look around us in that magnificent mountainous country, where the woods creep up the sides of the precipitous walls of rock; let us ascend to the dazzling snow-fields above, and descend again to the green valleys beneath, where the rivers and the brooks foam along as if they weie afraid that they should not fast enough reach the ocean and be lost in its immensity. The sun''s burning rays shine on the deep dales, and they also shine upon the heavy masses of snow above, so that the ice-blocks which have been accumulating for years melt and become rolling avalanches, piled-up glaciers. Two such lie in the broad mountain clefts under Schreckhorn and Wetterhorn, near the little mountain town of Grindelwald. They are wonderful to behold, and therefore in summer-time many strangers come here from every foreign land. They come over the lofty snowcovered hills; they come through the deep valleys, and from thence for hours and hours they must mount; and always, as they ascend, the valleys seem to become deeper and deeper, until they appear as if viewed from a balloon high up in the air. The clouds often hang like thick heavy curtains of smoke around the lofty mountain peaks, while down in the valley, where the many brown wooden houses lie scattered about, a bright ray of the sun may be shining, and bringing into strong relief some brilliant patch of green, making it look as if it were transparent. The waters foam and roar as they rush along below -- they murmur and tinkle above. They look, up there, like silver ribbons streaming down over the rocks. On both sides of the ascending road lie wooden houses. Each house has its little potato garden, and this is a necessity; for within doors yonder are many mouths -- the houses are...
