British-American Relations 1917-1918: The Role of Sir William Wiseman. Supplementary Volume to The Papers of Woodrow Wilson

Product : British-American Relations 1917-1918: The Role of Sir William Wiseman. Supplementary Volume to The Papers of Woodrow Wilson
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : Throughout the First World War Woodrow Wilson considered Britain''s ambitions in the war as objectionable as Germany''s. He repeatedly expressed distrust of the British government''s motives; for their part, the British chafed at Wilson''s idealism and despised his aloofness from the Allies. Sir William Wiseman played an extraordinary part as the behind- the-scenes liaison between the two major powers. Acting as a personal friend and confidant of Wilson''s adviser, Colonel House, Wiseman is credited with keeping animosities in check between America and Great Britain, and for helping to establish coalition diplomacy, which was new to the U.S. in 1917-1918, though within 25 years it became a permanent characteristic of American foreign policy. British-American Relations, 1917-1918 provides fascinating insights not only into Wiseman''s role but into the entire diplomacy of the Wilson period.Originally published in 1969.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. The Language of History in the Renaissance: Rhetoric and Historical Consciousness in Florentine Humanism

Product : The Language of History in the Renaissance: Rhetoric and Historical Consciousness in Florentine Humanism
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : At any time, basic assumptions about language have a direct effect on the writing of history. The structure of language is related to the structure of knowledge and thus to the definition of historical reality, while linguistic competence gives insights into the relation of ideas and action.Within the framework of these ideas, and drawing on recent work in linguistic theory, including that of the French structuralists. Professor Struever studies the major shift in attitudes toward language and history which the Renaissance represents. One of the essential innovations of Renaissance Humanism is the substitution of rhetoric for dialectic as the dominant language discipline; rhetoric gives the Humanists their cohesion as a lay intellectual elite, as well as the force and direction of their thought. The author accepts the current trend in classical studies, the rehabilitation of the Sophists which finds its source in Nietzsche and includes the work of Rostagni, Untersteiner, and Buccellato, to reinstate rhetoric as the historical vehicle of Sophistic insight.Originally published in 1970.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Strategic Intelligence for American World Policy

Product : Strategic Intelligence for American World Policy
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : Intelligence work is in some ways like a newspaper or newsmagazine, in some like a business, in some like the research activity of a university; very little of it involves cloaks and daggers. All of it is important to national survival, and should be understood by the citizens of a democracy. In this remarkable book, an able scholar, experienced in foreign intelligence, analyzes all of these varied aspects of what is known as high-level foreign positive intelligence. Illustrations are drawn from that branch, but the lessons apply to all intelligence, and in fact to all those phases of business, of journalism, and (most importantly) of scholarship, where the problem is to learn what has happened or will happen.Originally published in 1966.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Authority and Democracy: A General Theory of Government and Management

Product : Authority and Democracy: A General Theory of Government and Management
Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : Should the democratic exercise of authority that we take for granted in the realm of government be extended to the managerial sphere? Exploring this question, Christopher McMahon develops a theory of government and management as two components of an integrated system of social authority that is essentially political in nature. He then considers where in this structure democratic decision making is appropriate. McMahon examines the main varieties of authority: the authority of experts, authority grounded in a promise to obey, and authority justified as facilitating mutually beneficial cooperation. He also discusses the phenomenon of managerial authority, the authority that guides nongovernmental organization, and argues that managerial authority is best regarded not as the authority of a principal over an agent, but rather as authority that facilitates mutually beneficial cooperation among employees with different moral aims. Viewed in this way, there is a presumption that managerial authority should be democratically exercised by employees.Originally published in 1997.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Description : How to find, train, and retain talented individuals for the public service is the concern of this symposium. Maimonides & Metabolism: Unique Scientific Breakthroughs in Weight Loss

Product : Maimonides & Metabolism: Unique Scientific Breakthroughs in Weight Loss
Category : Books>Health and Well Being
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : Get the keys to sustainable weight loss—reduce hunger, speed up metabolism, and transform your body into a fat-burning machine, with a science based approach.Today there is a debate raging among nutritional authorities concerning the timing of breakfast. Some argue that in order to avoid sugar lows and uncontrollable hunger one should eat breakfast shortly after awakening. Others promote the extension of the nightly fast by delaying breakfast, and thereby attaining the metabolic advantages and improved insulin sensitivity of intermittent fasting.Maimonides & Metabolism explains in depth the physiological processes that are overlooked by many mainstream nutritional authorities, such as the fact that it’s better to hold off on breakfast until at least three hours after waking. A person habituated to such a late breakfast won’t suffer sugar lows because the hormone cortisol is at its daily peak half an hour after waking up in the morning, and cortisol boosts blood sugar levels. In fact, since cortisol raises blood sugar (the opposite of insulin which lowers it) eating a breakfast that includes carbohydrates too early will spike blood sugar levels too much, as the high levels of cortisol won’t allow the insulin to lower the blood sugar to balanced levels. High blood sugar then leads to hyperinsulinemia (too much insulin). And simultaneous high levels of cortisol and insulin cause the body to increase the number of fat cells. Hyperinsulinemia also directs the body to store fat, and blocks the body from using stored fat for energy.Maimonides & Metabolism delves into the timing of meals and exercise, habituating ourselves to the most effective strategies of daily intermittent fasting that alleviates hunger and puts us into the natural fat burning mode.Several chapters go into great detail on macronutrients to arm dieters and dietitians with the understanding needed for sustainable fat-loss.It includes hundreds of cutting edge studies backing up the recommendations of Maimonides and the Talmud, as well as the best proven short-term and long-term dieting methods for fat-loss and improved health. It also includes 16 charts, 14 graphs/diagrams/pictures, 358 footnote references, a glossary and bibliography.Health professionals are hailing it THE Health Bible, recommending this book to their colleagues and patients for its amazing array of insights and solutions.Click on tab "Add to Cart" and begin your journey to freedom from hunger, faster fat-burning metabolism, and get into great shape.GREAT VALUE!!! Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : By the end of the Civil War, fatalities from that conflict had far exceeded previous American experience, devastating families and communities alike. As John Neff shows, commemorating the 620,000 lives lost proved to be a persistent obstacle to the hard work of reuniting the nation, as every memorial observation compelled painful recollections of the war. Neff contends that the significance of the Civil War dead has been largely overlooked and that the literature on the war has so far failed to note how commemorations of the dead provide a means for both expressing lingering animosities and discouraging reconciliation. Commemoration-from private mourning to the often extravagant public remembrances exemplified in cemeteries, monuments, and Memorial Day observances-provided Americans the quintessential forum for engaging the war''s meaning. Additionally, Neff suggests a special significance for the ways in which the commemoration of the dead shaped Northern memory. In his estimation, Northerners were just as active in myth-making after the war. Crafting a Cause Victorious myth that was every bit as resonant and powerful as the much better-known Lost Cause myth cherished by Southerners, the North asserted through commemorations the existence of a loyal and reunified nation long before it was actually a fact. Neff reveals that as Northerners and Southerners honored their separate dead, they did so in ways that underscore the limits of reconciliation between Union and Confederate veterans, whose mutual animosities lingered for many decades after the end of the war. Ultimately, Neff argues that the process of reunion and reconciliation that has been so much the focus of recent literatureeither neglects or dismisses the persistent reluctance of both Northerners and Southerners to forgive and forget, especially where their war dead were concerned. Despite reunification, the continuing imperative of commemoration reflects a more complex resolution to the war than is even now apparent. His book provides a compelling account of this conflict that marks a major contribution to our understanding of the war and its many meanings.

Description : Is It Really Too Much To Ask? is the fifth book in Jeremy Clarkson''s bestselling The World According to Clarkson series. Well, someone''s got to do it: in a world which simply will not see reason, Jeremy sets off on another quest to beat a path of sense through all the silliness and idiocy. It could be: -The merits of Stonehenge as a business model -Why all meetings are a waste of time -The theft of the Queen''s cows -One Norwegian man''s unique approach to showing his gratitude -Fitting a burglar alarm to a tortoise -Or how Lou Reed was completely wrong about what makes a perfect day Pithy and provocative, this is Clarkson at his best, taking issue with whatever nonsense gets in the way of his search for all that''s worth celebrating. Why should we be forced to accept stuff that''s a bit rubbish? Shouldn''t things work? Why doesn''t someone care? I mean, is it really too much to ask? It''s a good thing we''ve still got Jeremy out there, still looking, without fear or favour, for the answers. The Leibniz-Clarke Correspondence: With extracts from Newtons Principia and Optiks

Product : The Leibniz-Clarke Correspondence: With extracts from Newtons Principia and Optiks
Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : In 1715 Leibniz wrote to his friend the Princess of Wales to warn her of the dangers Newton''s philosophy posed for natural religion. Seizing this chance of initiating an exchange between two of the greatest minds in Europe, the princess showed his letter to the eminent Newtonian scientist and natural theologian, Samuel Clarke. From his reply developed an exchange of papers which was published in 1717. The correspondence was immediately seen as a crucial discussion of the significance of the new science, and it became one of the most widely read philosophical works of its time. Kant developed his theory of space and time from the problems at issue, and the post-Newtonian physics of the twentieth century has brought a revival of interest in Leibniz''s objections: some of the problems are still not finally resolved. In this edition an introduction outlines the historical background, and there is a valuable survey of the subsequent discussions of the problem of space and time in the philosophy of science. Significant references to the controversy in Leibniz''s other correspondence have also been collected, and the relevant passages from Newton''s Principia and Opticks are appended.

Imperialism And Popular Culture

Product : Imperialism And Popular Culture
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : Popular culture is invariably a vehicle for the dominant ideas of its age. Never was this more true than in the late-19th and early 20th centuries, when it reflected the nationalist and imperialist ideologies current throughout Europe. This text examines the various media through whichnationalist ideas were conveyed in late-Victorian and Edwardian times - in the theatre, ethnic shows, juvenile literature, education and the iconography of popular art. Several chapters look beyond World War I, when the most popular media, cinema and broadcasting, continued to convey an essentially late-19th-century world view, while government agencies like the Empire Marketing Board sought to convince the public of the economic value of empire. Youthorganizations, which had propagated imperialist and militarist attitudes before the war, struggled to adapt to the new internationalist climate.

Product : Propaganda and Empire: The Manipulation of British Public Opinion, 1880-1960
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : It has been said that the British Empire, on which the sun never set, meant little to the man in the street. Apart from the jingoist eruptions at the death of Gordon or the relief of Mafeking he remained stonily indifferent to the imperial destiny that beckoned his rulers so alluringly. Strange, then that for three-quarters of a century it was scarcely possible to buy a bar of soap or a tin of biscuits without being reminded of the idea of Empire. Packaging, postcards, music hall, cinema, boy''s stories and school books, exhibitions and parades, all conveyed the message that Empire was an adventure and an ennobling responsibility. Army and navy were a sure shield for the mother country and the subject peoples alike. Boys'' brigades and Scouts stiffened the backbone of youth who flocked to join. In this illuminating study John M. Mackenzie explores the manifestations of the imperial idea, from the trappings of royalty through writers like G. A. Henty to the humble cigarette card. He shows that it was so powerful and pervasive that it outlived the passing of Empire itself and, as events such as the Falklands ''adventure'' showed, the embers continue to smoulder.

Railways And Culture In Britain: The Epitome Of Modernity

Product : Railways And Culture In Britain: The Epitome Of Modernity
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : The 19th-century steam railway epitomized modernity's relentlessly onrushing advance. Ian Carter delves into the cultural impact of the train. Why, for example, did Britain possess no great railway novel? He compares fiction and images by canonical British figures (Turner, Dickens, Arnold Bennett) with selected French and Russian competitors: Tolstoy, Zola, Monet, Manet. He argues that while high cultural work on the British steam railway is thin, British popular culture did not ignore it. Detailed discussions of comic fiction, crime fiction, and cartoons reveal a popular fascination with railways tumbling from vast (and hitherto unexplored) stores of critically overlooked genres.

Market relations and the competitive process

Product : Market relations and the competitive process
Category : Books>Business and Finance
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : There has been increasing interest and debate in recent years on the instituted nature of economic processes in general and the related ideas of the market, in particular the competitive process. This debate lies at the interface between two largely independent disciplines, economics andsociology, and reflects an attempt to bring the two fields of discourse more closely together. This book, newly available in paperback, explores this interface in a number of ways, looking at the competitive process and market relations from a number of different perspectives. It includes a wide range of contributors, most of whom are leading writers and thinkers in the field. The book considers the social role of economic institutions in society and examines the various meanings embedded in the word ''markets'', as well as developing arguments on the nature of competition as an instituted economic process, rather than as competition being something that disturbs norms orinstitutions. It goes on to consider the deeper and more involved connection between markets and cognition, explaining how institutions can ease cognitive difficulties, and the effect of culture on markets and competition is also fully studied. This book will be of vital use to students and academics working in the fields of economics, sociology and business studies. It sketches the agenda for future research about markets and the competitive process.

British railway enthusiasm

Product : British railway enthusiasm
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : This is the first academic book to study railway enthusiasts in Britain. Far from a trivial topic, the postwar train spotting craze swept most boys and some girls into a passion for railways, and for many, ignited a lifetime''s interest. British railway enthusiasm traces this postwar cohort, and those which followed, as they invigorated different sectors in the world of railway enthusiasm - train spotting, railway modelling, collecting railway relics - and then, in response to the demise of main line steam traction, Britain''snow-huge preserved railway industry. Today this industry finds itself riven by tensions between preserving a loved past which ever fewer people can remember and earning money from tourist visitors. The widespread and enduring significance of railway enthusiasm will ensure that this ground-breaking text becomes a key work in transport studies, and will appeal to enthusiasts as much as to students and scholars of transport and cultural history.

Cultural Identities and the Aesthetics of Britishness

Product : Cultural Identities and the Aesthetics of Britishness
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : This book examines British imperial, colonial and postcolonial national identities within their political and social contexts. By considering the export, adoption and creation of such cultural identities, these essays show how nationhood and nationalism are self-consciously defined tools designed to focus and inspire loyalty. The contributors present these ideas with particular reference to English cultural identity and its interaction with the Empire. They examine the national, imperial and colonial aesthetic--how architecture, landscape, painting, sculpture and literature were used, appropriated and re-appropriated in the furtherance of social and political agendas, and how this impacted on the making of Britishness in all its complexities. It is demonstrated that not only did the dominant aesthetic culture reinforce the dominant political and social ideology, it also re-presented and re-constructed the notion of British national identity.

It reappraises the range of effects it is possible to create through the use of graphic devicesand explores why literary criticism has dismissed such features as either unreadable experimental gimmicks or, more recently, as examples of the worst kind of postmodern decadence. Through the examination of problematical texts which utilise the graphic surface in innovative and unusual ways, including Samuel Beckett''s Watt, B. S. Johnson''s Albert Angelo, Christine Brooke-Rose''s Thru and Alasdair Gray''s Lanark, this book demonstrates that an awareness of the graphic surfacecan make significant contributions to interpretation.

Building a neighborly community: Post-cold war China, Japan, and Southeast Asia

Product : Building a neighborly community: Post-cold war China, Japan, and Southeast Asia
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : Building a neighborly community, available for the first time in paperback, explores the political economy of post-cold war East Asian co-operation by examining the history of intra-regional co-operation, against the background of China''s rise and Japan''s relative decline, both real andperceived. The book in particular examines how East Asian states have dealt with the South China Sea as a region-wide security challenge and the imperative for self-help after the 1997 economic crisis. The book builds on the explanatory strength of analytical eclecticism, and ultimately concludes that China, South Korea, Japan, and ASEAN states have aimed for constructing a neighborly community. The fundamental differences between a neighborly community and the kind of community that has emergedin Europe and North America are that qualification for membership is not conditional, the process of routine interactions is itself one of reassurance, the aim of inter-state interactions is to foster acceptance of each other, and changes in a member''s foreign policy behaviour are accepted.

Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : This book covers various aspects of the social history of politics on both sides of the Iron Curtain in the period 1945 to 1956. The contributors come from a range of countries (Austria, Germany, Hungary, Slovakia and the United Kingdom) and comprise a mixture of established historians andyounger scholars engaged in pioneering research. The individual chapters are organised into four sections dealing with workers, ethnic and linguistic minorities, youth, and women. In order to enhance the comparative character of the volume, the four chapters contained in each section consider the position of these social groups in, respectively,West Germany, East Germany, Austria, and either Czechoslovakia or Hungary. Major themes include the absence of popular revolutions in the aftermath of World War Two, the re-imposition of social control by post-war elites, the attempt to restore pre-war gender relations, and the failure of Communistparties to win popular support. The chosen time-frame saw most of the decisive developments which set the pattern for the remaining Cold War period and is therefore of key importance for any student of this topic.

Rethinking Settler Colonialism: History and Memory in Australia, Canada, Aotearoa New Zealand and South Africa

Product : Rethinking Settler Colonialism: History and Memory in Australia, Canada, Aotearoa New Zealand and South Africa
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : Rethinking Settler Colonialism focuses on the long history of contact between indigenous peoples and the white colonial communities who settled in Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand, Canada and South Africa.  In each of these countries these communities were displaced, marginalised and sometimes subjected to attempted genocide through the colonial process. Recently these groups have renewed their claims for greater political representation and autonomy. The essays and artwork in this book insist that an understanding of the political and cultural institutions and practices which shaped settler-colonial societies in the past can provide important insights into how this legacy of unequal rights can be contested in the present. It will be of interest to those studying the effects of colonial powers on indigenous populations, and the legacies of imperial rule in postcolonial societies.

Cinematic countrysides

Product : Cinematic countrysides
Category : Books>Entertainment
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : Recent years have witnessed an explosion of interest in the spatialities of cinema across the social sciences and humanities, yet to date critical inquiry has tended to explore this issue as a question of the city and the urban. For the first time, leading scholars in geography, film andcultural studies have been drawn together to explore the multiple ways in ideas of cinema and countryside are co-produced: how film makes rural and rural makes film. From the expanse of the American great west to the mountainous landscapes of North Korea, Cinematic Countrysides draws on a rangeof popular and alternative film genres to demonstrate how film texts come to prefigure expectations of rural social space, and how these representations come to shape, and be shaped by, the material and embodied circumstances of lived rural experience. At the heart of this volume''s varied apprehensions of the cinematic countryside is a concern to argue that ideas of rurality in film are central to wider questions of modernity and tradition, self and other, nationhood and globalisation, and crucially, ones that are central to anaccount of the cinematic city.

Category : Books>Fiction and Literature
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : This edition of some five hundred recently-discovered poems by Mildmay Fane, second Earl of Westmorland presents the largest collection of ''new'' seventeenth-century poetry since Traherne''s poems were published almost a century ago.Until the rediscovery of these manuscripts, written between 1625 and 1665, Fane was known only as a patron of Robert Herrick, and as the author of a slim volume of poems, Otia Sacra (1648). This important body of manuscript poetry establishes him as a significant early modern poet.Fane’s agonized and changing representation of an England turned upside-down and back again, and of its everyday social as well as political life, is meticulously annotated in this first edition. It uses Fane''s surviving account books and letters, as well as a wealth of other contemporary information, to contextualise his poems in a way rarely possible with other early modern writers. The resulting text provides fascinating and revealing insights for cultural and political historians, as well as for all readers of English poetry.

The Works of Richard Edwards: Politics, Poetry and Performance in Sixteenth Century England

Product : The Works of Richard Edwards: Politics, Poetry and Performance in Sixteenth Century England
Category : Books>Fiction and Literature
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : The heart of this book is its fully annotated, critical editions of the surviving work of Richard Edwards, one of the most influential poets and dramatists writing in England before Shakespeare. Ros King''s extensive introduction, identifying the holes in the documentary evidence that might accommodate this important but now little known writer, rewrites the history of pre-Shakespearean drama, illustrates new approaches to sixteenth-century prosody and to the modernization of dramatic poetry, and re-evaluates the public role of theatre and poetry during a particularly turbulent period in English history. While it will be essential reading for specialist scholars, it will also be of much wider interest. The introduction is highly accessible which makes it an appropriate text-book for students in a field where few textbooks are available. It will appeal to the current appetite among the reading public for biography, while the play, poems and songs are themselves very appealing.

Thomas of Woodstock

Product : Thomas of Woodstock
Category : Books>Fiction and Literature
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : This anonymous manuscript play has long been the subject of scholarly dispute regarding its relationship with Shakespeare’s Richard II. This edition, which thoroughly re-examines the text, situates the play within its historical and political context, relating it to the genre of chronicle drama to which it belongs. The manuscript is of particular interest in that it appears to have been used in the playhouse over a considerable period of time and contains what seems to be evidence of the theatre practice of the time. The play is also of special interest for its skillful and original handling of source material which may well have influenced Shakespeare’s Richard II. The extensive appendices drawn from Holinshed, Grafton and Stow provide the reader with the opportunity to investigate the manner in which the dramatist has shaped the material. The editors argue for the play’s stage-worthiness and dramatic complexity, suggesting that its range both of dramatic tone and social inclusiveness indicate the work of a dramatist of considerable skill and subtlety, equal or superior to the Shakespeare of the Henry VI plays.

Description : The landscape of pre-Conquest England can often be reconstructed in minute detail. Yet this is one of the first attempts at such a project. Here the evidence is examined for the West Midlands -- the counties of Worcestershire, Warwickshire and Gloucestershire, much of which formed the Anglo--Saxon kingdom of the Hwicce.Della Hooke reveals the intimate local landscape through the medium of place names, contemporary documents and archaeological evidence. Her detailed picture brings the Anglo-Saxon countryside very much to life. The patterns which emerge in this period go far to explain the nature of later medieval patterns of settlement and field systems, and provide the key to understanding territorial organisation in the region.

Spectacular Performances: Essays on theatre, imagery, books and selves in early modern England

Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : Why did Queen Elizabeth I compare herself with her disastrous ancestor Richard II? Why would Ben Jonson transform Queen Anne and her ladies into Amazons as entertainment for the pacifist King James? How do the concept of costume as high fashion and as self-fashioning, as disguise and as thevery essence of theatre, relate to one other? How do portraits of poets help make the author readers want, and why should books, the embodiment of the word, be illustrated at all? What conventions connect image to text, and what impulses generated the great art collections of the early seventeenthcentury? In this richly illustrated collection on theatre, books, art and personal style, the eminent literary critic and cultural historian Stephen Orgel addresses himself to such questions in order to reflect generally on early modern representation and, in the largest sense, early modern performance. Aswide-ranging as they are perceptive, the essays deal with Shakespeare, Jonson and Milton, with Renaissance magic and Renaissance costume, with books and book illustration, art collecting and mythography. All are recent, and five are hitherto unpublished.

The meaning of monsters, vampires and ghosts has changed significantly over the last two hundred years, as have the mechanisms (from fiction to fantasmagoria, film and video games) through which they are produced and consumed. Re-examining key concepts such as the uncanny, the sublime, terror, shock and abjection in terms of their bodily and technological implications, this book advances current critical and theoretical debates on Gothic horror to propose a new theory of cultural production based on an extensivediscussion of Freud''s idea of the death drive. Product : Juke Box Britain: Americanisation and youth culture, 1945-60
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : British teenagers witnessed immense cultural change in the period following the second world war. There were fewer than 100 juke boxes in Britain in 1945 and over 15,000 by 1958. Over the same period there was a similar unprecedented expansion of casual youth venues in the form of cafes, snack, milk and coffee bars where young people could hear the sounds of hot American jazz and rock ''n'' roll. It has been a common assumption among academics and cultural historians alike that British youth between 1945 and 1960 underwent a period of massive Americanisation. Juke Box Britain contests this view maintaining that American popular-cultural influences were not examples of cultural dominationbut simply influences that combined with existing styles to create distinctly British style fusions. Juke Box Britain is suitable for students of cultural, social and design histories as well as cultural studies and provides fascinating reading for youth culture and juke box enthusiasts.

Chronicles of the Investiture Contest: Frutolf of Michelsberg and His Continuators

Product : Chronicles of the Investiture Contest: Frutolf of Michelsberg and His Continuators
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : At the very end of the eleventh century, the German monk Frutolf of Michelsberg completed a chronicle that would become one of the most significant historical works of the middle ages. Frutolf''s Chronicle offered not only a learned history of the world beginning with the Creation, but animportant eyewitness account of the conflict between the German emperors and the papacy known today as the Investiture Contest. Such was his chronicle''s significance that it was continued, adapted and copied many times during the twelfth century and beyond. This book offers the first English translation of large portions of Frutolf''s Chronicle and its most important adaptations: an anonymous continuation written in 1106, an imperial chronicle dedicated to Emperor Henry V of Germany in 1114, a version by Abbot Ekkehard of Aura and an anonymouscontinuation that extends to 1125. The translated texts span the century-and-a-quarter from 1000 to 1125, offering penetrating commentary on the reigns of the four Salian kings of Germany, the development of papal reform, the conflict between empire and papacy, and the early crusading movement.Significantly, these texts present startlingly different perspectives on the history of the period - from Frutolf''s pro-imperial account, which emphasizes the divisive influence of Pope Gregory VII on the unity of church and empire, to Ekkehard of Aura''s uncompromisingly pro-Gregorian interpretationthat casts Emperor Henry IV of Germany in the role of consummate villain. Frutolf of Michelsberg and his continuators offer to specialists, non-specialists and undergraduates alike a rich and fascinating example of how medieval authors wrote and re-wrote history. Alongside other contemporary texts translated in this series, the book provides a window on the conflict thatfundamentally altered the relationship of church and state in Western society.

Description : Nation and literature are always inherently unstable categories but, in the case of South Africa, this instability is particularly marked. This study considers the effects local and global networks had on the publication, promotion and reception of a series of key writers and their worksbetween 1883 and 2005, asking: who published what, where, why, and how; how and why work was construed as South African, what this meant, and how it affected reading. Exploring new approaches to studying colonial and postcolonial print cultures, it seeks to redress inadequately historicised ortransnationally situated studies of South African writing in English. The book is absolutely essential reading for anyone with an interest in the fields of South African, African, and general colonial and postcolonial literatures and history, as well as those with an interest print and media cultures, and the History of the Book.

Karel Reisz

Category : Books>Entertainment
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : Czech-born refugee Karel Reisz (1926-2002) is widely regarded as one of the seminal figures in post-war British cinema. Along with Lindsay Anderson and Tony Richardson, Reisz was a founder member of the independent Free Cinema movement which attacked the parochial middle-class values ofhome-grown studio product with a vigorous commitment to everyday working-class subject matter and a poetically charged film style. This was immediately recognisable in the aesthetic of the international success of Reisz''s first feature, Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (1960). As the import of Free Cinema rapidly dissipated during the Swinging London era, Reisz confronted the changing cultural mores of the 1960s and 1970s with a series of ambivalent films that critique the anarchic free spirit of the times, including Morgan (1966), Isadora (1968), The Gambler (1974) andDog Soldiers (1978). Drawing on Reisz''s early film criticism for Sequence and Sight and Sound, as well as interdisciplinary methodologies, this first career-length study explores Reisz''s personal brand of character-based realism, offering the spectator a privileged insight into an artist''s developing response tosubjective and historical dislocation. The book should thus prove invaluable to film scholars, cultural historians and the Reisz aficionado.

Robert Southwell: Snow in Arcadia: redrawing the English lyric landscape, 1586-95

Product : Robert Southwell: Snow in Arcadia: redrawing the English lyric landscape, 1586-95
Category : Books>Fiction and Literature
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : It has traditionally been held that Robert Southwell?s poetry offers a curious view of Elizabethan England, one that is from the restricted perspective of a priest-hole. This book dismantles that idea by examining the poetry, word by word, discovering layers of new meanings, hidden emblems, and sharp critiques of Elizabeth?s courtiers, and even of the ageing queen herself.Using both the most recent edition of Southwell?s poetry and manuscript materials, it addresses both poetry and private writings including letters and diary material to give dramatic context to the radicalisation of a generation of Southwell?s countrymen and women, showing how the young Jesuit harnessed both drama and literature to give new poetic poignancy to their experience. Bringing a rigorously forensic approach to Southwell?s ?lighter? pieces, Sweeney can now show to what extent Southwell engaged exclusively through them in direct artistic debate with Spenser, Sidney, and Shakespeare, placing the poetry firmly in the English landscape familiar to Southwell?s generation. Those interested in early modern and Elizabethan culture will find much of interest, including new insights into the function of the arts in the private Catholic milieu touched by Southwell in so many ways and places.

Living in sin: Cohabiting as husband and wife in nineteenth-century England

Product : Living in sin: Cohabiting as husband and wife in nineteenth-century England
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : *Living in sin* is the first book-length study of cohabitation in nineteenth-century England, based on research into the lives of hundreds of couples. ''Common-law'' marriages did not have any legal basis, so the Victorian courts had to wrestle with unions that resembled marriage in every way, yet did not meet its most basic requirements. The majority of those who lived in irregular unions did so because they could not marry legally. Others chose not to marry, from indifference, from class differences, or because they dissented from marriage for philosophical reasons. This book looks at each motivation in turn, highlighting class, gender and generational differences, as well as the reactions of wider kin and community. Frost shows how these couples slowly widened the definition of legal marriage, preparing the way for the more substantial changes of the twentieth century, making this a valuable resource for all those interested in Gender and Social History.

Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : This book is the first overview of Wales in the period from the Second World War to the early years of devolution. Drawing upon in-depth research, it offers an incisive account of an important phase in British history from the perspective of a nation that is too often overlooked. The period since 1939 saw more rapid and significant change than any other time in Welsh history. Wales developed a more assertive identity of its own and some of the apparatus of a nation state. Yet its economy floundered between boom and bust, its traditional communities were transformed and theWelsh language and other aspects of its distinctiveness were undermined by a globalizing world. Wales was also deeply divided by class, language, ethnicity, gender, religion and region. Its people grew wealthier, healthier and more educated but they were not always happier. This ground-breaking bookexamines the story of Wales since 1939, giving voice to ordinary people and the variety of experiences within the nation. This is a history of not just a nation, but of its residents'' hopes and fears, their struggles and pleasures and their views of where they lived and the wider world. A significant contribution to ideas on national identity and to public debates on Welshness and Britishness in a devolved UK, Wales since 1939 embraces topics ranging from the Aberfan disaster, the miners'' strikes and the flooding of Tryweryn to the impacts of consumerism, rugby and popular music. It will appeal to anyone interested in the recent history of both Wales and Britain, and in British social and political history more generally.

Description : In the aftermath of 9/11 there has been much talk of a need to engage on a meaningful level with Islam, but where do we begin and what is the right approach? This book, available in paperback for the first time, looks at case studies from around the world in order to explore how Christiangroups, sometimes as minorities and sometimes as the majority, engage with their Muslim neighbours in the search for a peaceful society. Some of the initiatives are politically motivated, others run by Church authorities and a number are community based, but all offer different approaches to avariety of situations that are encountered in Christian-Islamic dialogue. This is the first time that global strategies for dialogue have been published in one book by a series of leading academics. Whilst previous publications have concentrated on a particular geographical area, usually the Middle East or Europe, this book casts a wider net and considers issues such asthe rise of radical Islam in post-Soviet states, Indonesian immigration in Australia and the spread of Islam amongst the Black South Africans after the fall of apartheid. Scholars and all those interested in politics, current affairs, religion or peace studies will find this book essential reading as a guidebook to the state of contemporary Christian-Islamic relations.

Description : Since the end of the Cold War there have been many competing ideas about how to explain contemporary conflicts, and about how the West should respond to them. This study, newly available in paperback, examines how the media interpret conflicts and international interventions, testing thesometimes contradictory claims that have been made about recent coverage of war. Framing post-Cold War conflicts takes a comparative approach, examining UK press coverage across six different crises. Through detailed analysis of news content, it seeks to identify the dominant themes in explaining the post-Cold War international order, and to discover how far the patternsestablished prior to 11 September 2001 have subsequently changed. Based on extensive original research, the book includes case studies of two humanitarian military interventions (in Somalia and Kosovo), two instances where Western governments were condemned for not intervening enough (Bosnia andRwanda), and the post-9/11 interventions in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Defectors and the Liberal Party 1910 to 2010: A Study of Inter-Party Relationships

Product : Defectors and the Liberal Party 1910 to 2010: A Study of Inter-Party Relationships
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : In May 2010, much to the surprise of most commentators, voters and even the parties themselves, a coalition agreement was reached between the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats. The general assumption beforehand had been that the natural coalition allies for the Liberal Democrats wouldhave been the Labour Party. However, this book reveals that over the whole century leading up to the 2010 election, there had been an enduring cultural compatibility between the Conservatives and the Liberals/Liberal Democrats, which had not been the case with the relationship between theLiberals/Liberal Democrats and Labour. This book is the first analysis of political defections over a long time span. It investigates all the Liberal/Liberal Democrat MPs and former MPs who defected from the party between the elections of December 1910 and May 2010 - around one sixth of all those elected - as well as the smaller numberof inward defectors. Each of the 122 defections was an expert judgment on the state of the party at a specific date. The research investigates the timing and reasons for all the defections and reveals long-term trends and underlying causes and apportions responsibility between leaders for them. Theauthor finds some significant differences which distinguished defectors from loyalists and draws wider conclusions about the underlying factors which lead MPs to defect. This book will be of interest to students and lecturers of British politics and anyone interested in the relationship between British political parties in the last century.

Product : Networks of sound, style and subversion: The punk and post-punk worlds of Manchester, London, Liverpool and Sheffield, 1975-80
Category : Books>Entertainment
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : In this important book Nick Crossley examines the birth of punk in the UK and its transformation, within a short period of time, into post-punk. Dominant explanations of these developments have tended to focus upon strains and frustrations, both social and aesthetic, which are said to haveprovoked a generation of young people into rebellious action. Crossley identifies a number of problems with such explanations, stressing in particular their failure to explore punk''s micro-mobilisation. UK punk emerged within the interactions of a small, circumscribed and geographicallyconcentrated network of music enthusiasts, he argues, and sociological analysis of it must start there; with this network and the events and mechanisms which allowed it grow to a national scale, diffusing punk culture. Similarly, to fully understand post-punk we must investigate the variouscity-based networks, generated in some part through excitement about punk, which incubated both frustration at what it soon became and creative attempts to transcend its limitations. Deploying innovative concepts of critical mass, social networks and music worlds, and using sophisticated techniques of social network analysis, Crossley engages with the detail of punk''s emergence, diffusion and subsequent transformation into post-punk, offering a highly original and robustaccount of these fascinating and culturally important processes. Written in an accessible style, this book is essential reading for anybody with an interest in either UK punk and post-punk or the impact of social networks on cultural life and the potential of social network analysis to explore this impact.

Pre-school childcare in England, 1939-2010

Product : Pre-school childcare in England, 1939-2010
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : Pre-school childcare in England, 1939-2010 is an innovative study of the relationship between child development theories, childcare practices and children''s experiences. Looking at childcare outside the home in four different forms: day nurseries, nursery schools and classes, playgroups, andchildminders, the book navigates how both individual families and wider society managed the care of young children in the context of dramatic increases in the employment of mothers. The book demonstrates that three principal arguments shaped the experience of all those involved. The first was thatcare for the under-fives was the responsibility of individual families, not the state. The second was that young children were best off at home with their mothers. Thirdly, it was desired that any care that was offered to the under-fives should be cost effective. Pre-school childcare explores howthese beliefs influenced statutory and voluntary provision. The book''s importance of this monograph also lies in its innovative approach. Through its use of a new body of oral history interviews with childcare workers and users, the book charts how the debates surrounding child development influenced the provision and practice of care and the consequences onthose involved. Childcare remains an issue fraught with controversies and in the public eye. Through its consideration of the relationship between current perspectives and past attitudes, Pre-school childcare will be valuable reading for students, researchers and practitioners working in earlyyears'' services and related disciplines, and for those interested in twentieth century British social history.

Corporate and White-collar Crime in Ireland: A new architecture of regulatory enforcement

Product : Corporate and White-collar Crime in Ireland: A new architecture of regulatory enforcement
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : This monograph is the first definitive examination of the practice of corporate regulation and enforcement from the foundation of the Irish State to the present day. Traditionally, corporate wrongdoing was often criminalised using conventional criminal justice methods and the ordinary policewere often charged with the responsibility of enforcing the law. Since the 1990s, however, the conventional crime monopoly on corporate deviancy has become fragmented because a variety of specialist, interdisciplinary agencies with enhanced powers now address corporate wrongdoing. The exclusivedominance of conventional crime methods has also faded because corporate wrongdoing is now specifically addressed by a pyramidal enforcement architecture, taking compliance orientated and sanctioning approaches, using both civil and criminal enforcement mechanisms, where criminal law is now thesanction of last resort. It is the first monograph to analyse the transition in Ireland from a sanctioning, command and control model of corporate enforcement to the compliance-orientated regulatory model. It is also unique in locating this shift in its broader sociological and jurisprudential context. As such, thedistinctive contribution of this monograph is not in the analysis of corporate or white-collar crimes but rather in its analysis of the emerging legal architecture which attempts to manage rather than punish crime. It provides a definitive account of a State at a critical stage of its economicdevelopment, having moved from an agrarian and protected society to a free-market globalised economy which is trying to cope with the negative aspects of increased corporate activity, having experienced an economic boom and depression in a remarkably condensed period of time.

Product : Material goods, moving hands: Perceiving Production in England, 1700-1830
Category : Books>Art and Architecture
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : This innovative volume explores how individuals understood production processes in new ways during the eighteenth century. It examines a series of different groups - consumers, retailers, designers, manufacturers and workers - to show how their means of perceiving production changed in thisperiod. In doing so, it reorients current discussions of consumption and production to see them as interrelated entities. At the same time, it underscores the importance of materiality to understandings of eighteenth-century consumer culture. As such, it moves beyond taste, desire and novelty toreveal how objects acted as conduits through which people living in Georgian Britain could examine the material world and the processes and knowledge that rendered it. Primarily bought in retail spaces, ceramic objects were more than fashionable commodities, they were also pieces of clay that had been shaped, fired and decorated. How then did contemporaries conceive of such materiality? Combining material culture and visual culture approaches, this volume showshow consumers made use of different representations of production to understand manufacturing and making. By also exploring how retailers, designers, manufacturers and workers conceived of production processes, the contested nature of such understandings begin to emerge. In marking out the sitesupon which these groups disputed ideas about production, this study makes an important contribution to assessing how people in eighteenth-century Britain explored the labour, materials, knowledge and skills that constituted the material world around them.

Description : Swedish crime fiction became an international phenomenon in the first decade of the twenty-first century, starting first with novels but then percolating through Swedish-language television serials and films into English-language BBC productions and Hollywood remakes. This book looks at therich history of Nordic noir, examines the appeal of this particular genre and attempts to reveal why it is distinct from the plethora of other crime fictions. Examining the popularity of Stieg Larsson''s international success with his Millennium trilogy, as well as Henning Mankell''s Wallanderacross the various media, Peacock also tracks some lesser-known novels and television programmes. He illustrates how the bleakness of the country''s noirs reflects particular events and cultural and political changes, with the clash of national characteristics becoming a key feature. It will appeal to students and researchers of crime fiction and of film and television studies, as well as the many fans of the novels and dramatic representations.

Product : Transatlantic defiance: The Militant Irish Republican Movement in America, 1923-45
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : This book examines the militant Irish republican movement in the United States from the final months of the Irish Civil War through to the Second World War. The narrative, crafted to appeal to both an academic and general audience, carefully and creatively intertwines the personalities, eventsand policies that shaped the militant republican movement in the US during this period and shows the evolution of its deep transnational nature. Most importantly, through a bottom-up historical analysis that incorporates an examination of more than eighty archival collections in the US, Ireland andBritain, the work presents for the first time an account of the anti-Treaty IRA veterans who arrived in the US after the Irish Civil War.Upon their settlement in Irish-American communities, these republicans directly influenced and guided the US-based militant republican organisation, Clan na Gael, transformed the overall dynamics of militant Irish republicanism in America and provided leadership and co-ordination for an IRA bombingcampaign. The inclusion of these IRA veterans in the narrative creates a fresh and revised interpretation of the militant Irish republican activism that occurred in the US in the immediate decades after the Irish revolutionary period.

Healthy Living in the Alps: The origins of winter tourism in Switzerland, 1860-1914

Product : Healthy Living in the Alps: The origins of winter tourism in Switzerland, 1860-1914
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : Healthy living in the Alps examines the relationship between the search for relief from respiratory diseases, such as tuberculosis, in high alpine resorts and the development in the same places of winter sports tourism. The first winter visitors to the Swiss Alps began to arrive in the 1860s and were encouraged to take outdoor exercise as part of their cure regime. They also had healthy visitors and companions who sought recreation while the invalids were resting as part of the sanatoria routine. Demonstrating thatthis is not just part of the history of Switzerland but of Britain too, biographical backgrounds of British visitors to the resorts give depth and context to a history of health and winter sports tourism by looking at the kind of people who would spend months of the year in the Alps. A discussion ofthe application of modern technologies creates an overall view of the growth of health and sports tourism in Switzerland.

Contemporary Violence: Postmodern War in Kosovo and Chechnya

Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : Contemporary Violence: Postmodern War in Kosovo and Chechnya draws on several years of field research, as well as interpretive IR theory and analysis of empirical source material so as to shed light on contemporary violence. Drawing on interpretive approaches to International Relations, the book argues that founding events and multiple contexts informed the narratives deployed by different members of each movement, illustrating why elements within the Kosovo Liberation Army and the armed forces of the Chechen republicof Ichkeria favoured regional and local strategies of war in the Balkans and the North Caucasus. The book draws on post-positivist analysis and empirical research so as unravel the relationship between narratives, stories and hermeneutic accounts of International Relations; regional politics andtrans-local identity; globalisation and visual aspects of contemporary security; criminality and emotionality; which together illustrate the dynamics within the armed resistance movements in Kosovo and the North Caucasus and the road to war in 1999. The book is a major addition to a small field of genuinely readable studies of IR theory. The book will be of interest to academics, researchers, students, area studies experts and policy-makers seeking to understand the formation of the armed resistance movements in Kosovo and Chechnya. Amongstother things, the book will be of interest to students and scholars of International Relations, Political Studies, Area Studies, as well as those within Cultural and Historical and Sociological Studies.

Co-memory and Melancholia: Israelis memorialising the Palestinian Nakba

Product : Co-memory and Melancholia: Israelis memorialising the Palestinian Nakba
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : The 1948 war that led to the creation of the State of Israel also resulted in the destruction of Palestinian society when some 80 per cent of the Palestinians who lived in the major part of Palestine upon which Israel was established became refugees. Israelis call the 1948 war their War ofIndependence and the Palestinians their Nakba, or catastrophe. After many years of Nakba denial, land appropriation, political discrimination against the Palestinians within Israel and the denial of rights to Palestinian refugees, in recent years the Nakba is beginning to penetrate Israeli publicdiscourse. This book explores the construction of collective memory in Israeli society, where the memory of the trauma of the Holocaust and of Israel''s war dead competes with the memory claims of the dispossessed Palestinians. Taking an auto-ethnographic approach, Ronit Lentin makes a contribution to socialmemory studies through a critical evaluation of the co-memoration of the Palestinian Nakba by Israeli Jews. Against a background of the Israeli resistance movement, Lentin''s central argument is that co-memorating the Nakba by Israeli Jews is motivated by an unresolved melancholia about the disappearance of Palestine and the dispossession of the Palestinians, a melancholia that shifts mourning from thelost object to the grieving subject. Lentin theorises Nakba co-memory as a politics of resistance, counterpoising co-memorative practices by internally displaced Israeli Palestinians with Israeli Jewish discourses of the Palestinian right of return, and questions whether return narratives by IsraeliJews, courageous as they may seem, are ultimately about Israeli Jewish self-healing rather than justice for Palestine.

Product : Healing with Water: English spas and the water cure, 1840-1960
Category : Books>Health and Well Being
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : Healing with Water provides a medical and social history of English spas and hydropathic centres from 1840 to 1960. It investigates health practices and healing cultures at specialist inland resorts showing that water was used in varied therapeutic approaches by both orthodox and unorthodox practitioners. It explores ideas about water''s healing potential and the importance placed on a healthy regimen, andexamines how treatment became associated with new institutions and a specialist workforce. Water cures attracted sustained support from patients suffering from a variety of complaints, some of which were associated by contemporaries with the effects of industrialisation and modernisation. Theimportance of broader public and private cultures of health is considered, in particular how health and social reform movements influenced views of patients and practitioners. The relationship between the medical application of water and its use for leisure and hygienic purposes is alsoinvestigated. The study brings new perspectives to the historiography of resort development, which has previously focused on the seaside and leisure, by exploring how health and healing influenced society and economy in specialist watering places - aspects that were actively marketed to the public. A range ofmedical and non-medical actors were influential in shaping facilities and environment at resorts, including local authorities, charities and private businesses. The study assesses why the NHS provided spa treatment in 1948 but funding was later withdrawn, and compares this with trends in France andGermany. This book will appeal to medical, social and cultural historians in Britain, North America and Australasia.

Product : Peace, war and party politics: The Conservatives and Europe, 1846-59
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : Peace, war and party politics examines the mid-Victorian Conservative Party’s significant but overlooked role in British foreign policy and in contemporary debate about Britain’s relations with Europe. The book considers the Conservatives’ response - in opposition and government - to the tumultuous era of Napoleon III, the Crimean war and Italian unification. Within a clear chronological framework, it focuses on ‘high’ politics, and offers a detailed account of the party’s foreign policy in government under its longest-serving but forgotten leader, the fourteenth Earl of Derby. It attaches equal significance to domestic politics, and incorporates a provocative new analysis of Disraeli’s role in internal tussles over policy, illuminating the roots of the power struggle he would later win against Derby’s son in the 1870s. Overall, it helps to provide us with a fuller picture of mid-Victorian Britain’s engagement with the world. This book will be of use to those teaching and studying Victorian politics and foreign policy at all levels in higher education.

Anarchism and utopianism

Product : Anarchism and utopianism
Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : This collection of original essays examines the relationship between anarchism and utopianism, exploring the intersections and overlaps between these two fields of study and providing novel perspectives for the analysis of both. The book opens with an historical and philosophical survey of thesubject matter and goes on to examine antecedents of the anarchist literary utopia; anti-capitalism and the anarchist utopian literary imagination; free love as an expression of anarchist politics and utopian desire; and revolutionary practice. Contributors explore the creative interchange of anarchism and utopianism in both theory and modern political practice; debunk some widely-held myths about the inherent utopianism of anarchy; uncover the anarchistic influences active in the history of utopian thought; and provide fresh perspectiveson contemporary academic and activist debates about ecology, alternatives to capitalism, revolutionary theory and practice, and the politics of art, gender and sexuality. Scholars in both anarchist and utopian studies have for many years acknowledged a relationship between these two areas, but thisis the first time that the historical and philosophical dimensions of the relationship have been investigated as a primary focus for research, and its political significance given full and detailed consideration.

Roots of the Pax Americana: Decolonisation, development, democratisation and trade

Product : Roots of the Pax Americana: Decolonisation, development, democratisation and trade
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : This book examines how and why Americans built an informal trading empire and why the British Empire needed to be removed before a Pax Americana could be built. The Pax Americana is a phenomenon of global significance, and this fascinating book offers a systematic explanation for the rise of this super empire and examines in detail how it is governed. A core feature of the book is a concern with America’s vision of the world and how the USA has attempted (especially since 1945) to export this vision across the globe. The book identifies and examines the underlying discourses and belief systems that gave rise to a Pax Americana. An eclectic range of methodologies and theories are deployed to explain the phenomenon of this informal empire, ranging from to materialist (political economy) explanations of ‘US imperialism’ through to those explanations grounded in the non-materialist realm of values, ideas and world views. The result is an exploration of the curious phenomenon of an ‘anti-imperialist’ empire with both ‘economic’ and ‘moral’ roots.

Description : This is the first comprehensive study of U.S. policy toward China during the presidency of Lyndon Johnson, a critical phase of the Cold War immediately preceding the dramatic Sino-American rapprochement of the early 1970s. Based on a wide array of recently declassified government documents, this study challenges the popular view that Johnson''s approach to China was marked by stagnation and sterility, exploring the administration''s relationship to both the Vietnam War and the Cultural Revolution. By documenting Johnson''s contributions to the decision-making process Lumbers offers a newperspective on both his capacity as a foreign policy leader and his role in the further development of the Cold War. Description : Why do governments pass freedom of information laws? The symbolic power and force surrounding FOI makes it appealing as an electoral promise but hard to disengage from once in power. However, behind closed doors compromises and manoeuvers ensure that bold policies are seriously weakened beforethey reach the statute book. The politics of freedom of information examines how Tony Blair''s government proposed a radical FOI law only to back down in fear of what it would do. But FOI survived, in part due to the government''s reluctance to be seen to reject a law that spoke of freedom, information and rights. Aftercomparing the British experience with the difficult development of FOI in Australia, India and the United States - and the rather different cases of Ireland and New Zealand - the book concludes by looking at how the disruptive, dynamic and democratic effects of FOI laws continue to cause controversyonce in operation.
