For Sale -american Paradise: How Our Nation Was Sold An Impossible Dream In Florida

Product : For Sale -american Paradise: How Our Nation Was Sold An Impossible Dream In Florida
Category : Books
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : The story of how Florida became entwined with Americans'' twentieth-century hopes, dreams, and expectations is also a tale of mass delusion, real estate collapses, and catastrophic hurricanes. For Sale--American Paradise hones in on the experiences of American icon William Jennings Bryan, journalist Edwin Menninger, and others who shaped the image of Florida that we know today and who sold that image as America''s paradise. The cast also includes the Marx Brothers, Thomas Edison, Al Capone, a pack of backwoods bandits known as the Ashley Gang, and the visionaries and businessmen who poured their dreams and their cash into Florida in the roaring, raucous 1920s. A tale of a colorful and tragicomic era during which the allure and illusion of the American Dream was on full display-a Jazz Age period when Americans started chasing what F. Scott Fitzgerald called "the orgiastic future"-the book reveals how the 2008 collapse of Florida real estate was eerily similar to events that happened there in the 1920s What sets the mid-1920s'' Florida land boom apart from more recent booms-and-busts, however, is that this was the first time that emerging new technologies, mass communications, and modern advertising techniques were used to sell the nation on the notion that prosperity and happiness are entitlements that are simply there for the taking. Florida''s image as a place where the rules of everyday life don''t apply and winners go to play was formed during this dawn of the age of consumerism when Americans wanted to have fun and make lots of money, and millions of them thought Florida was the perfect place to do that.

Bayerlein: From Afrikakorps To Panzer Lehr: The Life Of Rommel's Chief-of-staff Generalleutnant Fritz Bayerlein

Product : Bayerlein: From Afrikakorps To Panzer Lehr: The Life Of Rommel's Chief-of-staff Generalleutnant Fritz Bayerlein
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : This book is the first and only comprehensive biography of the life of General-leutnant Fritz Bayerlein (1899-1970), Erwin Rommel''s former Chief-of-Staff and commander of the elite Panzer Lehr Division during World War II. Bayerlein is often quoted - and equally criticized - for his military failures and successes. His experiences with General Heinz Guderian in the invasion of Poland, France and Russia, along with North Africa, Hungary, Normandy and the Ruhr cover six years of intense war. During the Russian winter of 1943-1944, Bayerlein commanded the famous Berlin-Brandenburg 3rd Panzer Division. Officers and soldiers describe his battle experiences and provide valuable insight into the character and personality of this highly unusual panzer general. In addition, Spayd has edited many of the military manuscripts, articles and correspondence Bayerlein wrote which serve as the backbone of many of the chapters. In the process Bayerlein tells his own story and shows his feelings and frustrations on fighting a war of useless bloodshed. Using Bayerlein''s experiences, blended with personal accounts, the biography is a discovery of the range of his temperament - from raging anger over decisions made by superiors, to the gentleness of giving chocolate to children. The author researched Bayerlein''s life for over five years, discovering documents and photographs in military archives, visiting his friends, comrades and neighbors, learning about his early years, and family life. The author also had the cooperation and help of Bayerlein''s nephew who shared intimate detals of his uncle''s life - including many family and behind the scenes war photos. Bayerlein''s personal friend, Manfred Rommel, provides remarkable insight into the man''s nature. Over 340 photographs (many never before published and from his personal family collection), and twenty war maps drawn by Bayerlein, make this book a valuable addition to a military or biographical collection.

In Whose Interests: An Essay on Multinational Corporations

Product : In Whose Interests: An Essay on Multinational Corporations
Category : Books>Business and Finance
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : In In Whose Interests, Patricia Marchak adopts a critical perspective, arguing that multinational corporations do not operate in the interests of society at large or in the interests of a national society such as Canada. Creating and sustaining a set of interests particular to their own well-being and growth, they are efficient organizations for which human labour and management of technical resources are primarily of monetary value. Such resources, along with natural materials, are managed by and for corporations so that technology, labour, and knowledge are harnessed to corporate growth rather than social welfare. Divided into two parts, the first concerned with the political economy of a corporate capitalism with particular reference to the Canadian situation, the second concerned with the internal organization of corporations, and with the contributions of sociology to an understanding of these, In Whose Interest provides a comprehensive entry into the literature of political economy.

Category : Books>Science and Nature
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : Life in 2030 is a ground-breaking, practical, and, aboveall, positive vision of life in twenty-first-century Canada. As we moveinto the next century, the development of sustainable andenvironmentally benign patterns of resource utilization andsocioeconomic development is an essential priority. In this book, JohnRobinson and his co-authors investigate the possibility and impacts ofa sustainable future for Canada.Based on research initiated by the Sustainable Society Project in1988, Life in 2030 is unique in that it uses backcastinginstead of forecasting to trace the path of Canada forty years into thefuture to the year 2030. Instead of predicting the most likely futurebased on current trends, the authors set out a desirable future anddiscuss the changes that would need to occur between 1990 and 2030 toarrive at this future vision. This vision, derived from ethical, political, and ecological principles, is not viewed as definitive, forthe authors hope to inspire others to conceive of, and work towards, their own visions of a sustainable future.Life in 2030 makes a significant contribution tointerdisciplinary studies on the environment and sustainability becauseit develops a scenario that allows for an evaluation of the changesrequired to achieve a sustainable society. This book is requiredreading for anyone interested in a sustainable future environment. Italso provides an original and provocative look at life in Canada in thetwenty-first century.

Against the Grain: Foresters and Politics in Nova Scotia

Product : Against the Grain: Foresters and Politics in Nova Scotia
Category : Books>Science and Nature
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : This study of foresters and forestry in Nova Scotia presentsprofiles of seven forestry professionals, whose careers run from the1920s to the present. Including figures from the interwar, postwar, andcontemporary periods, the sample reflects issues and experiences inindustrial, government, and civil-sector forestry. It points to a richtradition of alternative and dissenting practices that is intertwinedwith the professional and political orthodoxies of the day.Too often, the ideas and practices of professional foresters havebeen viewed as monolithic. This book argues that forestry is a morediverse and complex activity than has been generally recognized. Italso underlines the political character of the profession. Differencelies at the root of politics, and Nova Scotia forestry has beenpunctuated by fundamental debates on matters of science, policy, andmanagement. In different ways, the subjects of this volume all have runagainst the grain, raising challenges in pursuit of newforestry practice. Many of their challenges have failed, in the face ofa determined consensus. Nonetheless, the plurality of views andexperiences they reveal are an apt reflection of the inherentlypolitical character of modern forestry and of the need to push beyondappearance to find the foundations of both orthodoxy and dissent.Against the Grain speaks to the concerns of foresters, social scientists and resource managers in a variety of fields.Sandberg and Clancy draw upon archival materials, public records, andpersonal interviews with the subjects to set their seven protagonistsin a wider historical context. The profiles and the conclusions thatfollow from them have relevance well beyond the province of NovaScotia, giving deeper perspective to the public and environmentalchallenges that have engulfed contemporary forestry.

Category : Books>Entertainment
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : British Columbia is celebrated as Canada’s principal centre ofaudiovisual production. Its billion-dollar industry trails behind onlyCalifornia and New York, the most well-established film productionsites on the continent. Prior to the mid-1970s, however, BritishColumbia had little in the way of film production that could properlybe called an industry. This timely book recounts the story of British Columbia's rapidrise from relative obscurity in the film world to its current status asHollywood North. Mike Gasher positions the industry as amodel for commercial film production in the twenty-first century -- onestrongly shaped by a perception of cinema as a medium, not of culture, but of regional industrial development. Addressing the specificeconomic and geographic factors that contribute to the province’ssuccess, such as the low Canadian dollar and BC’s proximity toLos Angeles, Gasher also considers the broader implications of theincreasingly widespread trend towards location service production onnational cinema and cultural production.Hollywood North is an important book that brings into focusthe tension between globalization and localization in the filmindustry. It will have great appeal to those with an interest indebates on Canadian national cinema, the notion of cinema as industry, and the highly nuanced relationship between cinema and place.Selected as a BC Book for Everybody.

Provincial forest policies are thus crucial for encouraging sustainable management of the nation''s forests as well as for promoting success in Canada''s wood-product manufacturing sector. They identify essential policy attributes that could be used to guide tenure reform, consider potential barriers that could prevent meaningful change, and offer practical means of overcoming these obstacles.By providing an up-to-date comparative examination of contemporary provincial forestry policies, this volume addresses a pressing need for information about the strengths and weaknesses of various forest tenure policies. It will be an indispensable tool for shaping future sustainable forest management.

Reasonable Accommodation: Managing Religious Diversity

Product : Reasonable Accommodation: Managing Religious Diversity
Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : Often when a religious minority challenges mainstream Canadian customs, the phrase “reasonable accommodation” and its boundaries are at the centre of the ensuing debate. But what exactly is reasonable accommodation? Does it achieve its goal of integrating the rights of religious minorities with those of mainstream society – or does it emphasize inequality?Reasonable Accommodation features eight interdisciplinary essays addressing how reasonable accommodation is defined within Canada and abroad through law and public discourse. These probing explorations based on empirical studies and legal cases touch on current hot-button topics such as women’s right to wear the niqab in public, religious diversity in prisons, and accommodating sexual diversity. Woven through the chapters are questions and commentary about whether there really is a religious majority in Canada, how the idea of “shared values” obscures debate, and how tolerating religious differences simply isn’t enough to guarantee equality. Reasonable Accommodation provides a much-needed critical assessment of this phrase and theorizes religious diversity and freedom of religion beyond the meaning of “tolerance” as it sometimes implies.Combining perspectives from the fields of law, religious studies, political science, philosophy and sociology, Reasonable Accommodation is a must-read for professors, researchers, students and policy-makers interested in religion and multiculturalism in Canada.

Indigenous in the City: Contemporary Identities and Cultural Innovation

Product : Indigenous in the City: Contemporary Identities and Cultural Innovation
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : Research on Indigenous issues rarely focuses on life in major metropolitan centres. Instead, there is a tendency to frame rural and remote locations as emblematic of authentic or “real” Indigeneity and, as such, central to the survival of Indigenous cultures and societies. While such a perspective may support Indigenous struggles for territory and recognition as distinct peoples, it fails to account for large swaths of contemporary Indigenous realities, not the least of which is the increased presence of Indigenous people and communities in cities. The chapters in this volume explore the implications of urbanization on the production of distinctive Indigenous identities in Canada, the United States, New Zealand, and Australia. The volume editors, both lead researchers in their fields, have called upon key figures to explore the experiences of urban Indigenous modernity, utilizing an interdisciplinary mix of methods, including ethnography, statistical analysis, archival research, and discourse analysis.Throughout the twentieth century, urban locales have been too often regarded as places were Indigenous culture goes to die. This book argues otherwise in its demonstration of the resilience, creativity, and complexity of the urban Indigenous presence, both in Canada and internationally.

Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : In the late 1990s, planning authorities in the Vietnamese capital ofHanoi pushed the imaginary line between city and country severalkilometres westward, engulfing dozens of rural settlements. As statepolicies forced rapid urbanization, villagers whose families had farmedthe land for generations saw rice fields levelled, irrigation canalsfilled, and large avenues flanked by residential towers, big-boxstores, and office buildings spring up. Danielle Labbé considers acentury of change to the settlement of Hoa Muc – a community thatunderwent a rapid transition from rural village to urban neighbourhood.Through extensive research in the community, Labbé studies not only thechanging lives of villagers, but also the state regulations andterritorialization projects that drove these changes on the outskirtsof Hanoi, and the early urban changes in the decades that preceded thereforms and continue to influence the area’s urbanization.Despite the new buildings, the end of farming activities, and thearrival of a large new population, the former villagers still considerHoa Muc their homeland. The compelling story of this single village isboth a portrait of a population that has endured despite drasticupheavals and a new analytical window onto Vietnam’s ongoingurban transition.

Who Is Bob_34?: Investigating Child Cyberpornography

Product : Who Is Bob_34?: Investigating Child Cyberpornography
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : Eye-catching headlines such as “Sixty people charged in child-porn crackdown” explode in the media with alarming frequency, giving the impression that our communities are awash with perverts. But what exactly do we know about these crimes and those who commit them? Who produces child cyberpornography? Who distributes it? Who consumes it? And is there a link between viewing and abuse?Seeking answers to these questions, Francis Fortin and Patrice Corriveau infiltrated child-porn user groups and compared their findings to scholarship on the subject. Who Is Bob_34? breaks down popular perceptions by opening a window on a clandestine world populated by a spectrum of cyberpedophiles, ranging from occasional image collectors to sex abusers who lure and assault children. Contrary to popular perceptions, the typical cyberpedophile is in his mid-thirties and grew up using the Internet. He often believes his actions are justifiable and takes pride in collecting and sharing child porn. This timely book reveals that this contemporary phenomenon is much more complicated than the media and commissioned reports suggest.

Data Dissemination in Wireless Computing Environments

Product : Data Dissemination in Wireless Computing Environments
Category : Books>Computers
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : In our increasingly mobile world the ability to access information on demand at any time and place can satisfy people''s information needs as well as confer on them a competitive advantage. The emergence of battery-operated, low-cost and portable computers such as palmtops and PDAs, coupled with the availability and exploitation of wireless networks, have made possible the potential for ubiquitous computing. Through the wireless networks, portable equipments will become an integrated part of existing distributed computing environments, and mobile users can have access to data stored at information servers located at the static portion of the network even while they are on the move. Traditionally, information is retrieved following a request-response model. However, this model is no longer adequate in a wireless computing environment. First, the wireless channel is unreliable and the bandwidth is low compared to the wired counterpart. Second, the environment is essentially asymmetric with a large number of mobile users accessing a small number of servers. Third, battery-operated portable devices can typically operate only for a short time because of the short battery lifespan. Thus, clients are expected to be disconnected most of the time. To overcome these limitations, there has been a proliferation of research efforts on designing data delivery mechanisms to support wireless computing more effectively. Data Dissemination in Wireless Computing Environments focuses on such mechanisms. The purpose is to provide a thorough and comprehensive review of recent advances on energy-efficient data delivery protocols, efficient wireless channel bandwidth utilization, reliable broadcasting and cache invalidation strategies for clients with long disconnection time. Besides surveying existing methods, this book also compares and evaluates some of the more promising schemes.

Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : Cohen argues that it was in the thirteenth century that a fundamental shift occurred in the Christian perception of both Judaism and Jews in Western Europe, and he attributes this change to the activities of the newly-formed mendicant orders—the Dominicans and Franciscans. In order to make this case as effectively as he does, the author has to approach his problem from two different perspectives—that of the historian of the medieval church, and that of the Jewish historian. Each of these approaches has its own scholarly literature, its own emphases, its own particular blind spots. It is the principal quality of this book that it focuses a steady, clear light on those dark corners, and will make sense to a variety of readers. . . . Cohen''s views will be taken seriously. Indeed, the calm and sensible tone of this book may help stimulate a new scholarly debate.—American Jewish History

Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : Lawrence Norfolk''s In the Shape of a Boar is a juggernaut of a novel, an epic tour de force of love and betrayal, ancient myths and modern horrors. The story begins in the ancient world of mythic Greece, where a dark tale of treachery and destructive love unfolds amid the hunt for the Boar of Kalydon -- a tale that will reverberate in those same hills across the millennia in the final chaotic months of World War II, as a band of Greek partisans pursues an S.S. officer on a mission of vengeance. After the war, a young Jewish Romanian refugee, Solomon Memel, who was among the hunters will create a poem based on the experience, which becomes an international literary sensation. But the truth of what happened in the hills of Kalydon in 1945 is more complicated than it seems, and as the older Sol reunites with his childhood love in 1970s Paris, the dark memories and horrors of those days will emerge anew.

Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : Informed, accessible textbook on law collections in the Pentateuch In this book William Morrow surveys four major law collections in Exodus-Deuteronomy and shows how they each enabled the people of Israel to create and sustain a community of faith. Treating biblical law as dynamic systems of thought facilitating ancient Israel's efforts at self-definition, Morrow describes four different social contexts that gave rise to biblical law: (1) Israel at the holy mountain (the Ten Commandments); (2) Israel in the village assembly (Exodus 20:22-23:19); (3) Israel in the courts of the Lord (priestly and holiness rules in Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers); and (4) Israel in the city (Deuteronomy). Including forthright discussion of such controversial subjects as slavery, revenge, gender inequality, religious intolerance, and contradictions between bodies of biblical law, Morrow's study will help students and other serious readers make sense out of texts in the Pentateuch that are often seen as obscure.

Description : When Agnes Morley Cleaveland was born on a New Mexico cattle ranch in 1874, the term Wild West was a reality, not a cliché. Queen of the Fall: A Memoir of Girls and Goddesses

Product : Queen of the Fall: A Memoir of Girls and Goddesses
Category : Books>Biography and Memoir
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : Whether pulled from the folds of memory, channeled through the icons of Greek mythology and Roman Catholicism, or filtered through the lens of pop culture, Sonja Livingston''s Queen of the Fall considers the lives of women. Exploring the legacies of those she has crossed paths with in life and in the larger culture, Livingston weaves together strands of memory with richly imagined vignettes to explore becoming a woman in late 1980s and early 1990s America.Along the way, the award-winning memoirist brings us face-to-face with herself as an inner-city girl-trying to imagine a horizon beyond poverty, fearful of her fertility and the limiting arc of teenage pregnancy. Livingston looks at the lives of those she''s known: friends who''ve gotten themselves into trouble and disappeared never to be heard from again, girls who tell their school counselor small lies out of necessity and pain, and a mother whose fruitfulness seems, at times, biblical. Livingston interacts with figures such as Susan B. Anthony, the Virgin Mary, and Ally McBeal to mine the terrain of her own femininity, fertility, and longing.Queen of the Fall is a dazzling meditation on loss, possibility, and, ultimately, what it means to be human.Watch a book trailer

Category : Books>History

Description : The first edition of this book, published in 1999, was well-received, but interest in it has surged in recent years. It chronicles an early example of “regime change” that was based on a flawed interpretation of intelligence and proclaimed a success even as its mistakes were becoming clear. Since 1999, a number of documents relating to the CIA’s activities in Guatemala have been declassified, and a truth and reconciliation process has unearthed other reports, speeches, and writings that shed more light on the role of the United States. For this edition, the author has selected and annotated twenty-one documents for a new documentary Appendix, including President Clinton’s apology to the people of Guatemala.

Drugs, Thugs, And Diplomats: U.s. Policymaking In Colombia

Product : Drugs, Thugs, And Diplomats: U.s. Policymaking In Colombia
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : In 2000, the U.S. passed a major aid package that was going to help Colombia do it all: cut drug trafficking, defeat leftist guerrillas, support peace, and build democracy. More than 80% of the assistance, however, was military aid, at a time when the Colombian security forces were linked to abusive, drug-trafficking paramilitary forces. Drugs, Thugs, and Diplomats examines the U.S. policymaking process in the design, implementation, and consequences of Plan Colombia, as the aid package came to be known.Winifred Tate explores the rhetoric and practice of foreign policy by the U.S. State Department, the Pentagon, Congress, and the U.S. military Southern Command. Tate''s ethnography uncovers how policymakers'' utopian visions and emotional entanglements play a profound role in their efforts to orchestrate and impose social transformation abroad. She argues that U.S. officials'' zero tolerance for illegal drugs provided the ideological architecture for the subsequent militarization of domestic drug policy abroad. The U.S. also ignored Colombian state complicity with paramilitary brutality, presenting them as evidence of an absent state and the authentic expression of a frustrated middle class. For rural residents of Colombia living under paramilitary dominion, these denials circulated as a form of state terror. Tate''s analysis examines how oppositional activists and the policy''s targets—civilians and local state officials in southern Colombia—attempted to shape aid design and delivery, revealing the process and effects of human rights policymaking.

Description : Since its original publication by UNC Press in 1980, this book has provided thousands of students with a concise introduction and guide to the history of the classical tradition in rhetoric, the ancient but ever vital art of persuasion. Now, George Kennedy offers a thoroughly revised and updated edition of Classical Rhetoric and Its Christian and Secular Tradition. From its development in ancient Greece and Rome, through its continuation and adaptation in Europe and America through the Middle Ages and Renaissance, to its enduring significance in the twentieth century, he traces the theory and practice of classical rhetoric through history. At each stage of the way, he demonstrates how new societies modified classical rhetoric to fit their needs. For this edition, Kennedy has updated the text and the bibliography to incorporate new scholarship; added sections relating to women orators and rhetoricians throughout history; and enlarged the discussion of rhetoric in America, Germany, and Spain. He has also included more information about historical and intellectual contexts to assist the reader in understanding the tradition of classical rhetoric.

Historical Dictionary of the American Revolution

Product : Historical Dictionary of the American Revolution
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : The American Revolution pitted 13 loosely united colonies in a military, political, and economic struggle against Great Britain: the mother country and arguably the most powerful state in the world during the late 18th century. The independent spirit that led many individuals to leave homes in Europe and settle in the New World during the 17th and 18th centuries evolved into the drive that persuaded these same settlers and their descendants to challenge the colonial economic and taxation policies of Great Britain, which lead to the armed conflict that resulted in a declaration of independence. This greatly expanded second edition of the Historical Dictionary of the American Revolution covers more battles, skirmishes, and raids of the American Revolution than any other printed source. This is done through a chronology, an introductory essay, maps, photos, a bibliography, and over 1000 cross-referenced dictionary entries.

The King Of Trees

Product : The King Of Trees
Category : Books>Fiction and Literature
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : When the three novellas in The King of Trees were published separately in China in the 1980s, “Ah Cheng fever” spread across the country. Never before had a fiction writer dealt with the Cultural Revolution in such Daoist-Confucian terms, discarding Mao-speak, and mixing both traditional and vernacular elements with an aesthetic that emphasized not the hardships and miseries of those years, but the joys of close, meaningful friendships. In The King of Chess, a student’s obsession with finding worthy chess opponents symbolizes his pursuit of the dao; in The King of Children—made into an award-winning film by Chen Kaige, the director of Farewell My Concubine—an educated youth is sent to teach at an impoverished village school where one boy’s devotion to learning is so great he is ready to spend 500 days copying his teacher’s dictionary; and in the title novella a peasant’s innate connection to a giant primeval tree takes a tragic turn when a group of educated youth arrive to clear the mountain forest. As moving and enduring as the best of Jack London or Knut Hamsun, The King of Trees is as relevant today as it will be tomorrow.

A Prehistory Of The North: Human Settlement Of The Higher Latitudes

Product : A Prehistory Of The North: Human Settlement Of The Higher Latitudes
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : Early humans did not simply drift northward from their African origins as their abilities to cope with cooler climates evolved. The initial settlement of places like Europe and northern Asia, as well as the later movement into the Arctic and the Americas, actually occurred in relatively rapid bursts of expansion. A Prehistory of the North is the first full-length study to tell the complex story, spanning almost two million years, of how humans inhabited some of the coldest places on earth. In an account rich with illustrations, John Hoffecker traces the history of anatomical adaptations, diet modifications, and technological developments, such as clothing and shelter, that allowed humans the continued ability to push the boundaries of their frontier. The book concludes by showing how in the last few thousand years, peoples living in the circumpolar zone--with the exception of western and central Siberia--developed a thriving maritime economy. Written in no technical language, A Prehistory of the North provides compelling new insights and valuable information for professionals and students.

Category : Books>Entertainment
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : The constellation of Hollywood stars burned brightly in the 1950s, even as the industry fell on hard economic times. Major artists of the 1940s--James Stewart, Jerry Lewis, and Gregory Peck--continued to exert a magical appeal but the younger generation of moviegoers was soon enthralled by an emerging cast, led by James Dean and Marlon Brando. They, among others, ushered in a provocative acting style, the Method, bringing hard-edged, realistic performances to the screen. Adult-oriented small-budget dramas were ideal showcases for Method actors, startlingly realized when Brando seized the screen in On the Waterfront. But, with competition from television looming, Hollywood also featured film-making of epic proportion--Ben-Hur and other cinema wonders rode onto the screen with amazing spectacle, making stars of physically impressive performers such as Charlton Heston.Larger Than Life offers a comprehensive view of the star system in 1950s Hollywood and also in-depth discussions of the decade''s major stars, including Montgomery Clift, Judy Holliday, Jerry Lewis, James Mason, Marilyn Monroe, Kim Novak, Bing Crosby, Gene Kelly, Jayne Mansfield, and Audrey Hepburn.

Description : Kristine Rankka has produced a masterpiece--an insightful analysis of modern feminist interpretations of ''radical'' or ''tragic'' suffering. Here is a mature work, comprehensive in its breadth, compelling in its argument, moving in its palpable sensitivity, poetic and graceful in its articulation. By invoking the category of the ''tragic, '' Rankka proposes a mystical-political spirituality to move reflection on suffering from the private, to the communal, interdependent realm. Rankka''s _Women and the Value of Suffering_ is a creative retrieval of a conversation among women, long in progress, about the meaning of life''s suffering. It is eminently readable and thoroughly enriching! George E. Griener, S.J. Academic dean Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley

Category : Books>Entertainment
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : As told by the musicians who made it happen, Desperados: The Roots of Country Rock revisits country rock''s rise to the top of the charts. Music scholar John Einarson delves into the years from 1963, when Buck Owens and his Buckaroos brought an electric edge to their Texas honky-tonk tunes, to 1973, when The Eagles released their album Desperado on David Geffen''s label. Einarson examines how folk, rockabilly, blues, Nashville country, Tejano, bluegrass, and other musical idioms influenced a generation of journeyman musicians. He traces the paths taken by the songsmiths, the bands in which they served their apprenticeships, and the songs they wrote together, as they steadily shaped the country rock sound. The protagonists of this story include talented but troubled Gram Parsons, a virtuoso determined to burn out before he faded away; the versatile and appealing Linda Ronstadt; Mike Nesmith, the Monkee from Texas who returned to his musical roots with a trilogy of country-rock albums; TV heartthrob turned country rocker Rick Nelson; folkie songbird Emmylou Harris before she made it in Nashville; and many others.

Description : In this long-awaited translation, Michel de Certeau anticipates current debates surrounding multiculturalism and social diversity, providing a prescient critique of identity politics.De Certeau considers the idea of culture itself, unveiling the specific political and social conflicts culture is designed to conceal. He looks at culture from several points of view, positioning his ideal of culture in the plural in opposition to an exclusivist notion of culture as the best that has been thought and said.De Certeau stresses that anyone attempting to understand contemporary societies in the West must grasp the already-existing diversity that outflanks elitist conceptions of the national group. Whatever the perceived benefits older ideas of social unity offered, de Certeau argues compellingly that they have no pertinence in the practical situation of societies today. Resonating with today''s culture wars, Culture in the Plural sheds new light on the challenges facing societies in transition.

Description : When it was originally published, Hybrid Cultures was foundational to Latin American cultural studies. This now-classic work features a new introduction in which Nestor Garcia Canclini calls for a cultural politics to contain the damaging effects of globalization and responds to relevant theoretical developments over the past decade.Garcia Canclini questions whether Latin America can compete in a global marketplace without losing its cultural identity. He moves with ease from the ideas of Gramsci and Foucault to economic analysis, from appraisals of the exchanges between Octavio Paz and Jorge Luis Borges to Chicano film and grafitti. Hybrid Cultures at once clarifies the development of democratic institutions in Latin America and reveals that the most destructive ideological trends are still going strong.

Images of Bliss: Ejaculation, Masculinity, Meaning

Product : Images of Bliss: Ejaculation, Masculinity, Meaning
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : Aristotle believed semen to be the purest of all bodily secretions, a vehicle for the spirit or psyche that gives form to substance. For Proust’s narrator in Swann’s Way, waking to find he has experienced a nocturnal emission, it is the product of “some misplacing of my thigh.” The heavy metal band Metallica used it to adorn an album cover. Beyond its biological function, semen has been applied with surprising frequency to metaphorical and narratological purposes. In Images of Bliss, Murat Aydemir undertakes an original and extensive analysis of images of male orgasm and semen. In a series of detailed case studies—Aristotle’s On the Generation of Animals; Andres Serrano’s use of bodily fluids in his art; paintings by Holbein and Leonardo; Proust’s In Search of Lost Time; hard-core pornography (both straight and gay); and key texts from the poststructuralist canon, including Lacan on the phallus, Bataille on expenditure, Barthes on bliss, and Derrida on dissemination—Aydemir traces the complex and often contradictory possibilities for imagination, description, and cognition that both the idea and the reality of semen make available. In particular, he foregrounds the significance of male ejaculation for masculine subjectivity. More often than not, Aydemir argues, the event or object of ejaculation emerges as the instance through which identity, meaning, and gender are not so much affirmed as they are relentlessly and productively questioned, complicated, and displaced. Combining close readings of diverse works with subtle theoretical elaboration and a keen eye for the cultural ideals and anxieties attached to sexuality, Images of Bliss offers a convincing and long overdue critical exploration of ejaculation in Western culture. Murat Aydemir is assistant professor of comparative literature at the University of Amsterdam.

Description : Proximity and Preference was first published in 1982.How does one design experiments for collecting large volumes of data such as those needed for marketing surveys, studies of travel patterns, and public opinion polls? This is a common problem for social and behavioral scientists. The papers in this collection address the problems of working with large data sets primarily from the perspectives of geography and psychology, two fields that share a common quantitative research methodology. After an introductory paper on substantive and methodological aspects of the interface between geography and psychology, the book is divided into three sections, experimental design and measurement problems, preference functions and choice behavior, and special problems of analyzing large data sets with multidimensional methods. Each paper is directed toward some fundamental problem such as those relating to experimental design, data reliability, and the selection of analytical methods which are appropriate for data sets of various sizes, completeness, and reliability.

Description : Animals have always been compelling subjects for artists, but the rise of animal advocacy and posthumanist thought has prompted a reconsideration of the relationship between artist and animal. In this book, Steve Baker examines the work of contemporary artists who directly confront questions of animal life, treating animals not for their aesthetic qualities or as symbols of the human condition but rather as beings who actively share the world with humanity. The concerns of the artists presented in this book—Sue Coe, Eduardo Kac, Lucy Kimbell, Catherine Chalmers, Olly and Suzi, Angela Singer, Catherine Bell, and others—range widely, from the ecological to the philosophical and from those engaging with the modification of animal bodies to those seeking to further the cause of animal rights. Drawing on extensive interviews he conducted with the artists under consideration, Baker explores the vital contribution that contemporary art can make to a broader conception of animal life, emphasizing the importance of creativity and trust in both the making and understanding of these artworks.Throughout, Baker is attentive to issues of practice, form, and medium. He asks, for example, whether the animal itself could be said to be the medium in which these artists are working, and he highlights the tensions between creative practice and certain kinds of ethical demands or expectations. Featuring full-color, vivid examples of their work, Artist Animal situates contemporary artists within the wider project of thinking beyond the human, asserting art’s power to open up new ways of thinking about animals.

Blockade Runners Of The Confederacy

Product : Blockade Runners Of The Confederacy
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : Within four weeks of the fall of Fort Sumter, President Abraham Lincoln had declared a blockade of over four thousand miles of Confederate coastline, from Cape Henry in Virginia to the Mexican border. In response, professional runners, lured by both profits and patriotism, built faster, sleeker, low-profile ships and piloted them through the ever-thickening Northern cordon. The tonnage they imported, including items ranging from straight pins to marine engines, sustained the South throughout the conflict. This exciting chronicle of the men and ships that ran federal naval blockades during the Civil War also provides an overall assessment of the blockades conception, effectiveness, and impact on the Southern populace.

Beyond the Cold War: Superpowers at the Crossroads

Product : Beyond the Cold War: Superpowers at the Crossroads
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies>Current Events
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : Since the rise to power of Mikhail Gorbachev, observers increasingly ask, ''Is the Cold War over? What do these changes mean for foreign policy? How confident can we be about anyone''s ability to foresee the future?'' This volume brings together a representative group of interpreters of the Cold War to address some of the recurrent questions. Responses divide both scholars and politicians. Critics of the Bush administration charge it has shown more nostalgia for the familiar patterns of the Cold War than energy in responding to changes in Soviet-American relations. Serious scholars who often agree on foreign policy assessments differ on key issues concerning the end of the Cold War and what will take its place. Contributors: William D. Anderson, Clay Clemens, Michael Cox, Anton W. Deporte, R. Bates Gill, Norman Graebner, Sterling Kernek, Shao-Chuan Leng, Peter Rutland, Peter Shearman, Steve Smith, Jack Spence, and Kenneth W. Thompson. Co-Published with the Miller Center of Public Affairs.

Description : Winner of the Association of American University Presses (AAUP) Book, Jacket, and Journal Show – Best Scholarly Typography (2002)That government is best which governs not at all; and when men are prepared for it, that will be the kind of government which they will have. This quote from Henry David Thoreau''s Essay on Civil Disobedience is one of thirty quotations from which John Cage created Anarchy, a book-length lecture comprising twenty mesostic poems. Composed with the aid of a computer program to simulate the coin toss of the I Ching, Anarchy draws on the writings of many serious anarchists including Emma Goldman, Peter Kropotkin, and Mario Malatesta, not so much making arguments for anarchism as brushing information against information, giving the very words new combinations that de-familiarize and re-energize them. Now widely available of the first time, Anarchy marks the culmination of Cage''s work as a poet, composer and as a thinker about contemporary society.

The Amistad Revolt: Memory, Slavery, and the Politics of Identity in the United States and Sierra Leone

Category : Books>Fiction and Literature
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : From journalism and lectures to drama, visual art, and the Spielberg film, this study ranges across the varied cultural reactions-in America and Sierra Leone-engendered by the 1839 Amistad slave ship revolt.Iyunolu Folayan Osagie is a native of Sierra Leone, from where the Amistad's cargo of slaves originated. She digs deeply into the Amistad story to show the historical and contemporary relevance of the incident and its subsequent trials. At the same time, she shows how the incident has contributed to the construction of national and cultural identity both in Africa and the African diasporo in America-though in intriguingly different ways. This pioneering work of comparative African and American cultural criticism shows how creative arts have both confirmed and fostered the significance of the Amistad revolt in contemporary racial discourse and in the collective memories of both countries.

Writing the South Through The Self: Explorations in Southern Autobiography

Product : Writing the South Through The Self: Explorations in Southern Autobiography
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : Drawing on two decades of teaching a college-level course on southern history as viewed through autobiography and memoir, John C. Inscoe has crafted a series of essays exploring the southern experience as reflected in the life stories of those who lived it. Constantly attuned to the pedagogical value of these narratives, Inscoe argues that they offer exceptional means of teaching young people because the authors focus so fully on their confrontations-as children, adolescents, and young adults-with aspects of southern life that they found to be troublesome, perplexing, or challenging.Maya Angelou, Rick Bragg, Jimmy Carter, Bessie and Sadie Delany, Willie Morris, Pauli Murray, Lillian Smith, and Thomas Wolfe are among the more prominent of the many writers, both famous and obscure, that Inscoe draws on to construct a composite portrait of the South at its most complex and diverse. The power of place; struggles with racial, ethnic, and class identities; the strength and strains of family; educational opportunities both embraced and thwarted-all of these are themes that infuse the works in this most intimate and humanistic of historical genres.Full of powerful and poignant stories, anecdotes, and testimonials, Writing the South through the Self explores the emotional and psychological dimensions of what it has meant to be southern and offers us new ways of understanding the forces that have shaped southern identity in such multifaceted ways.

Ordinary Lives in the Early Caribbean: Religion, Colonial Competition, and the Politics of Profit

Product : Ordinary Lives in the Early Caribbean: Religion, Colonial Competition, and the Politics of Profit
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : Kristen Block examines the entangled histories of Spain and England in the Caribbean during the long seventeenth century, focusing on colonialism''s two main goals: the search for profit and the call to Christian dominance.Using the stories of ordinary people, Block illustrates how engaging with the powerful rhetoric and rituals of Christianity was central to survival. Isobel Criolla was a runaway slave in Cartagena who successfully lobbied the Spanish governor not to return her to an abusive mistress. Nicolas Burundel was a French Calvinist who served as henchman to the Spanish governor of Jamaica before his arrest by the Inquisition for heresy. Henry Whistler was an English sailor sent to the Caribbean under Oliver Cromwell''s plan for holy war against Catholic Spain. Yaff and Nell were slaves who served a Quaker plantation owner, Lewis Morris, in Barbados. Seen from their on-the-ground perspective, the development of modern capitalism, race, and Christianity emerges as a story of negotiation, contingency, humanity, and the quest for community.Ordinary Lives in the Early Caribbean works in both a comparative and an integrative Atlantic world frame, drawing on archival sources from Spain, England, Barbados, Colombia, and the United States. It pushes the boundaries of how historians read silences in the archive, asking difficult questions about how self-censorship, anxiety, and shame have shaped the historical record. The book also encourages readers to expand their concept of religious history beyond a focus on theology, ideals, and pious exemplars to examine the communal efforts of pirates, smugglers, slaves, and adventurers who together shaped the Caribbean''s emerging moral economy.

Diplomacy in Black and White: John Adams, Toussaint Louverture, and Their Atlantic World Alliance

Product : Diplomacy in Black and White: John Adams, Toussaint Louverture, and Their Atlantic World Alliance
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : From 1798 to 1801, during the Haitian Revolution, President John Adams and Toussaint Louverture forged diplomatic relations that empowered white Americans to embrace freedom and independence for people of color in Saint-Domingue. The United States supported the Dominguan revolutionaries with economic assistance and arms and munitions; the conflict was also the U.S. Navy''s first military action on behalf of a foreign ally. This cross-cultural cooperation was of immense and strategic importance as it helped to bring forth a new nation: Haiti.Diplomacy in Black and White is the first book on the Adams-Louverture alliance. Historian and former diplomat Ronald Angelo Johnson details the aspirations of the Americans and Dominguans-two revolutionary peoples-and how they played significant roles in a hostile Atlantic world. Remarkably, leaders of both governments established multiracial relationships amid environments dominated by slavery and racial hierarchy. And though U.S.-Dominguan diplomacy did not end slavery in the United States, it altered Atlantic world discussions of slavery and race well into the twentieth century.Diplomacy in Black and White reflects the capacity of leaders from disparate backgrounds to negotiate political and societal constraints to make lives better for the groups they represent. Adams and Louverture brought their peoples to the threshold of a lasting transracial relationship. And their shared history reveals the impact of decisions made by powerful people at pivotal moments. But in the end, a permanent alliance failed to emerge, and instead, the two republics born of revolution took divergent paths.

Bethlehem Steel: Builder and Arsenal of America

Product : Bethlehem Steel: Builder and Arsenal of America
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : In the late 19th century, rails from Bethlehem Steel helped build the United States into the world''s foremost economy. During the 1890s, Bethlehem became America''s leading supplier of heavy armaments, and by 1914, it had pioneered new methods of structural steel manufacture that transformed urban skylines. Demand for its war materials during World War I provided the finance for Bethlehem to become the world''s second-largest steel maker. As late as 1974, the company achieved record earnings of $342 million. But in the 1980s and 1990s, through wildly fluctuating times, losses outweighed gains, and Bethlehem struggled to downsize and reinvest in newer technologies. By 2001, in financial collapse, it reluctantly filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Two years later, International Steel Group acquired the company for $1.5 billion. In Bethlehem Steel, Kenneth Warren presents an original and compelling history of a leading American company, examining the numerous factors contributing to the growth of this titan and those that eventually felled it—along with many of its competitors in the U.S. steel industry.Warren considers the investment failures, indecision and slowness to abandon or restructure outdated “integrated” plants plaguing what had become an insular, inward-looking management group. Meanwhile competition increased from more economical “mini mills” at home and from new, technologically superior plants overseas, which drove world prices down, causing huge flows of imported steel into the United States.Bethlehem Steel provides a fascinating case study in the transformation of a major industry from one of American dominance to one where America struggled to survive.

For Love of Lois

Product : For Love of Lois
Category : Books>Health and Well Being
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : It was then, sometime in February 1996, that Lois stopped trying to read and told me: ''I do believe I have Alzheimer''s.'' She said it in the way she might say, ''I think I''ll buy a new dress.'' She didn''t say how she came by her belief, nor did I ask. I just put my arms around her. And for the next five years, Ed Bliss''s arms were always around his beloved Lois. In this rare book of remembrance and love and loneliness, Ed Bliss chronicles Lois''s six-year journey into darkness. Spare, gentle, restrained, Bliss''s account of Lois''s struggle with Alzheimer''s is an unforgettable account of loss-whether of the ability to speak and write or even to eat-and helplessness in the face of a disease that knows no cure. Ed Bliss captures not just the terrible course of the disease, but the small moments that marked each stage of their last years together, from the last time Lois legibly wrote her name or went shopping to an unexpected joy because her Red Sox had won a game. Ed and Lois, in love for 60 years, only deepened their affections as they faced each new challenge. Lois Bliss died in 2001, at home, surrounded by family. Part memoir, part diary, this book conveys what all caregivers face in dealing with Alzheimer''s. But it is more than a tale of pain. In the end, grief turned to gratitude, Ed Bliss writes. What was cruel was no match for love.
