Cowboys And Gangsters: Stories Of An Untamed Southwest

Product : Cowboys And Gangsters: Stories Of An Untamed Southwest
Category : Books
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : Even after WWI had ended, the region of Arizona, New Mexico, and West Texas stubbornly refused to be tamed. It was still a place where frontier gunfights still broke out at an alarming rate. Utilizing official records, newspaper accounts, and oral histories, Cowboys and Gangsters tells the story of the untamed "Wild West" of the Prohibition-era of the 1920s and early 1930s and introduces a rogues'' gallery of sixgun-packing western gunfighters and lawmen. Told through the lens of the accounts of a handful of Texas Rangers and Federal Agents, this book covers a unique and action-packed era in American history. It''s a story that connects the horse and saddle days of the Old West, with the high-octane decade of the Roaring Twenties.

Take Up Your Mat and Walk

Product : Take Up Your Mat and Walk
Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : This book uses the metaphor of walking to gain insight into the spiritual life. Walking is the most basic movement of the human body. For many people, walking carries no value on its own except to transit between two points. From the spiritual perspective, we can derive many benefits through the act of walking. As a spiritual discipline, walking not only has health benefits but generates different states of well-being that are good for the human soul and spirit. Walking gives us pleasure, joy, happiness, and serenity. Metaphorically speaking, walking gives us a sense that we are on a journey with God. It also helps us to know the importance of engaging our physical bodies in our spirituality. It keeps us attuned to the present moment, cultivates in us a sense of wonder in the natural world, creates an inner space in our cluttered lives, highlights the need for solitude and silence, and gives us the freedom of simplicity that the soul enjoys. Mark Mah graduated from Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia. He teaches Church History and Spiritual Formation at Malaysia Baptist Theological Seminary and is the author of Being Human: The Desert Way of Spiritual Formation (2012) and Garden of the Soul: Exploring Metaphorical Landscapes of Spirituality (2014).

On the Road of the Winds: An Archaeological History of the Pacific Islands before European Contact

Product : On the Road of the Winds: An Archaeological History of the Pacific Islands before European Contact
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : The Pacific Ocean covers one-third of the earth''s surface and encompasses many thousands of islands, the home to numerous human societies and cultures. Among these indigenous Oceanic cultures are the intrepid Polynesian double-hulled canoe navigators, the atoll dwellers of Micronesia, the statue carvers of remote Easter Island, and the famed traders of Melanesia. Recent archaeological excavations, combined with allied research in historical linguistics, biological anthropology, and comparative ethnography, have begun to reveal much new information about the long-term history of these Pacific Island societies and cultures. On the Road of the Winds synthesizes the grand sweep of human history in the Pacific Islands, beginning with the movement of early people out from Asia more than 40,000 years ago, and tracing the development of myriad indigenous cultures up to the time of European contact in the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries. Questions that scholars have posed and puzzled over for two centuries or more are illuminated here: Where did the Pacific Islanders come from? How did they discover and settle the thousands of islands? Why did they build great monuments like Nan Madol on Pohnpei Island in Micronesia or the famous Easter Island statues? This book provides an up-to-date synthesis of archaeological and historical anthropological knowledge of these fascinating indigenous cultures. In particular, Kirch focuses on human ecology and island adaptations, the complexities of island trading and exchange systems, voyaging technology and skills, and the development of intensive economic systems linked to the growth of large populations. He also draws on his own original field research conducted on many islands, ranging from the Solomons to Hawai''i, as he takes us on an intellectual voyage into the Oceanic past.

Breaking the Heart of the World: Woodrow Wilson and the Fight for the League of Nations

Product : Breaking the Heart of the World: Woodrow Wilson and the Fight for the League of Nations
Category : Books>History
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : The fight over the League of Nations at the end of World War I was one of the great political debates of the American twentieth century. President Woodrow Wilson, himself a key architect of the League, was uncompromising in his belief that the United States would rise to a position of leadership in the peaceful union of states that he had envisaged. A masterful politician and distinguished theorist, Wilson was unprepared for the persuasiveness of his opponents and the potency of their argument. Though he struggled tirelessly in the summer of 1919 to drum popular and political support for the League, he could not keep pace: he suffered a disabling stroke in July. The United States Senate ultimately rejected membership in the League, and the League failed to realize its diplomatic potential. In this engaging narrative, John Cooper relates the story of Wilson''s battle for the League with sympathy, accuracy, and a deep understanding of the times. John Milton Cooper, Jr., is E. Gordon Fox Professor of American Institutions at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He has held Guggenheim and National Endowment for the Humanities fellowships and served as a Fulbright Professor at Moscow University. His previous books inlcude The Warrior and the Priest (Harvard University Press, 1985) and Pivotal Decades (Norton, 1992). Cooper is Chief Historian of the forthcoming biography of Woodrow Wilson on American Experience, which will be broadcast by PBS in 2002.

Description : On the survival and destruction of knowledge, from Alexandria to the Internet. Through the ages, libraries have not only accumulated and preserved but also shaped, inspired, and obliterated knowledge. Matthew Battles, a rare books librarian and a gifted narrator, takes us on a spirited foray from Boston to Baghdad, from classical scriptoria to medieval monasteries, from the Vatican to the British Library, from socialist reading rooms and rural home libraries to the Information Age. He explores how libraries are built and how they are destroyed, from the decay of the great Alexandrian library to scroll burnings in ancient China to the destruction of Aztec books by the Spanish—and in our own time, the burning of libraries in Europe and Bosnia. Encyclopedic in its breadth and novelistic in its telling, this volume will occupy a treasured place on the bookshelf next to Baker''s Double Fold, Basbanes''s A Gentle Madness, Manguel''s A History of Reading, and Winchester''s The Professor and the Madman.

Lives In The Law

Product : Lives In The Law
Category : Books>Reference and Language
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : The essays look at the consequences that legal practice has on the lives of its practitioners as well as on the individual legal subject and on the shape of shared identities. These essays challenge liberal and communitarian notions of what it means to live the law.In the first of the essays, Pnina Lahav presents a study of the Chicago Seven Trial to paint a picture of the law''s power to serve as a site for the definition of a collective group identity. In contrast, Sarah Gordon focuses on the experience of an individual legal subject, namely, the defendant in the Hester Vaughn trial, a notorious nineteenth-century case of infanticide. Frank Munger looks at how law constructs the identity of women and explores the strategies by which poor women resist the law''s construction of their dependency. In the fourth essay, Vicki Schultz offers a moral vision of equality that straddles the liberal and communitarian positions with her articulation of the concept of a life''s work. Lastly, Annette Wieviorka examines the recent trial of Maurice Papon for complicity in crimes against humanity to reveal how the very identity of a nation--in this case, France--can be defined through juridical and legal acts.Austin Sarat is William Nelson Cromell Professor of Jurisprudence and Political Science and Professor of Law, Jurisprudence and Social Thought, Amherst College. New Directions In English For Specific Purposes Research

Category : Books>Reference and Language
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : Studying language, discourses, and contexts of use—as well as student needs, in the broadest sense—and then applying these findings to the pedagogical practices, is what distinguishes ESP from other branches of applied linguistics and language teaching. The fundamental arguments in this volume are that ESP researchers must use all of the tools available to systematically assess the needs, identities, and issues faced by learners and the language and discourses of their contexts—as well as the “frames” brought to the context by the researchers themselves. In addition, ESP researchers must continue to develop the convergence between research, teaching, and learning as the profession continues to advance. This volume has two parts: Issues in ESP Research, which includes chapters by Ken Hyland, Brian Paltridge and Wei Wang, An Cheng, Diane Belcher and Lauren Lukkarila, and Anna Mauranen, and Methodologies and ESP Research, which includes chapters by John Flowerdew,  Christine Tardy, Sue Starfield, Ann Johns and Leketi Makalela, Lynne Flowerdew, and Magdi Kandil and Diane Belcher. Fittingly, John Swales, the father of ESP and author of Episodes of ESP, has contributed some remarks to close this important volume about the future of ESP.

Jurors' Stories of Death: How America's Death Penalty Invests in Inequality

Product : Jurors' Stories of Death: How America's Death Penalty Invests in Inequality
Category : Books>Reference and Language
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : What is most extraordinary about Ben Fleury-Steiner''s book is that it seeks to shed light on the ''black box'' of capital jury deliberations. Based on a remarkable social science survey of persons who served on capital juries, this volume illuminates the workings of the most closely guarded secret in the criminal justice system.-David Cole, from the ForewordPerhaps the most powerful, routinely enacted civic ritual in American public life is that of capital punishment. This state-sanctioned extirpation of human life in the collective pursuit of justice is a searing act of civic pedagogy, made legitimate only by the deliberative endorsement of a small group of ordinary citizens-the jury. In Jurors'' Stories of Death, Benjamin Fleury-Steiner has taken a cold, hard look at how these ordinary citizens come to terms with their extraordinary role, and how they rationalize their irreversible decisions. The result is a chilling portrait of how we---that is, all of us Americans---constitute ourselves as a political community.-Glenn Loury, Director, Institute on Race and Social DivisionThis illuminating and insightful examination of jury deliberations makes a terrific contribution to the study of capital punishment. Fleury-Steiner''s synthesis of sociological, legal and theoretical concepts with vivid juror narratives and statistical data, thoughtfully animates and details how race and class consciousness continue to shape America''s death penalty.---Bryan Stevenson, Professor of Clinical Law, NYU School of Law, Executive Director, Equal Justice Initiative of AlabamaJurors'' Stories of Death is more than just another book on the death penalty; it is the first systematic survey of how death penalty decisions are made.Benjamin Fleury-Steiner draws on real-life accounts of white and black jurors in capital punishment trials to discuss the effect of race on the sentencing process. He finds that race is invariably a factor in sentencing, with jurors relying on accounts that deny the often marginalized defendants their individuality and complexity, while reinforcing the jurors'' own identities as superior, moral, and law-abiding citizens-a system that punishes in the name of dominance. This biased story of us versus them continues to infuse political rhetoric on crime and punishment in the United States even today.Jurors'' Stories of Death concludes with an original argument for abolition of the death penalty: If America values multiculturalism and cultural diversity, it must do away with institutions such as state-sanctioned capital punishment in order to begin to free itself from the racism and classicism that so insidiously plague social relations today.

Lives of Lawyers Revisited: Transformation and Resilience in the Organizations of Practice

Product : Lives of Lawyers Revisited: Transformation and Resilience in the Organizations of Practice
Category : Books>Reference and Language
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : The past two decades have seen profound changes in the legal profession. Lives of Lawyers Revisited extends Michael Kelly’s work in the original Lives of Lawyers, offering unique insights into the nature of these changes, examined through stories of five extraordinarily varied law practices. By placing the spotlight on organizations as phenomena that generate their own logic and tensions, Lives of Lawyers Revisited speaks to the experience of many lawyers and anticipates important issues on the professional horizon.Michael Kelly has done it again! His Lives of Lawyers Revisited is a very easy read about some very difficult notions like ''litigation blindness'' and law as a business. It presents some fascinating perspectives on our profession.—J. Michael McWilliams, Past President, American Bar AssociationThe best single book about the American realities and possibilities of the American legal profession, combining an empathic and insightful account of law practice with a penetrating analysis of the wider context of professional work.—Marc Galanter, University of WisconsinMichael Kelly believes that professional values and conduct are not realized in codes, but in the experiences of practice, and that practice draws its routines and ideals from organizations. Through his studies of lawyers in various firms, closely observed and sympathetically described, Kelly reveals how differently organizations adapt to the intense pressures of today''s practice environment. His method of linking individual life-experiences to organizational strategies and the external constraints of competition and client demands infuses realism and richness into the concept of professionalism and makes this one of the most interesting and original books on professions and professionalism to appear in years.—Robert W. Gordon, Yale Law SchoolIn his two volumes of Lives of Lawyers, Michael Kelly explores legal ethics in an unusual, and unusually rewarding, way. Rather than focusing on rules or arguments, Kelly looks at the kind of lives lawyers lead. Ethics, Socrates thought, is about how to live one''s life, and Kelly takes the Socratic question to heart. He explores the institutions lawyers work in and the choices they make. He writes with intelligence, great insight, and above all with heart. This is a superb book.—David Luban, Georgetown University Michael J. Kelly is President and Chairman of the Board of the National Senior Citizens Law Center, an advocacy group for older Americans of limited means.

Framed Visions: Popular Culture, Americanization, and the Contemporary German and Austrian Imagination

Product : Framed Visions: Popular Culture, Americanization, and the Contemporary German and Austrian Imagination
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : Framed Visions analyzes the pivotal role American mass media and popular culture have played in shaping the political, social, and psychological identity of postwar Germans and Austrians. Through detailed readings of films, novels, plays, and poems of a variety of contemporary artists--including Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Wim Wenders, Elfriede Jelinek, Herbert Achternbusch, Monika Treut, Peter Handke, and Rolf Dieter Brinkmann--Gerd Gemünden reveals the paradoxical stance of this generation toward American politics and Hollywood aesthetics. On the one hand, they are pulled toward a culture that has shaped childhood images, tastes and desires; on the other, they reject American politics and the colonizing effect of its mass culture. In contrast to most scholarship about the reception of U.S. culture abroad, this study underscores the imaginary relation of contemporary German and Austrian artists to America. Topics such as Americanization and cultural imperialism are therefore treated not as a foreign principle imposed from the outside but as ways that German and Austrian artists have tried to come to terms with their own problematic culture and history. Gemünden''s study elucidates how the culture of the United States has been mapped in contradictory ways onto questions of national and cultural identity in Germany and Austria over the last thirty years.Gerd Gemünden is Assistant Professor of German and Comparative Literature, Dartmouth College.

Nation Work: Asian Elites and National Identities

Product : Nation Work: Asian Elites and National Identities
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : As increasing attention is drawn to globalization, questions arise about the fate of the nation, a political and social unit that for centuries has seemed the common-sense way to organize the world. In Nation Work, Timothy Brook and André Schmid draw together eight essays that use historical examples from Asian countries--China, India, Korea, and Japan--to enrich our understandings of the origin and growth of nations.Asia provides fertile ground for this inquiry, the volume argues, because in Asia the history of the modern nation has been inseparable from global influences in the form of Western imperialism. Yet, while the impetus for building a modern national identity may have come from the need to fashion a favorable place in a world system dominated by Western nations, those engaged in nationalist enterprises found their particular voices more often in relation to tensions within Asia than in relation to more generic tensions between Asia and the West. With topics ranging from public health measures in nineteenth-century Japan through textual scholarship of Tamil intellectuals, the willful division of Korea''s history from China''s, the development of China''s cotton industry, and the meaning of postnational-ism for Chinese artists, the essays reveal the fascinating array of sites at which nation work can take place. This will be essential reading for historians and social scientists interested in Asia.Timothy Brook is Professor of History, Stanford University. André Schmid is Assistant Professor of East Asian Studies, University of Toronto.

Product : The Child and the Hero: Coming of Age in Catullus and Vergil
Category : Books>Fiction and Literature
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : Many generations of readers have noticed the prominence given to children and to heroes--usually young men--in the poems of Vergil and his contemporary Catullus. But until now it has not always been clear why Vergil and Catullus employ these characters, or what readers are to make of these sometimes odd figures. In The Child and the Hero: Coming of Age in Catullus and Vergil, Mark Petrini thoughtfully explores this group of characters and helps illuminate their places in the poems. After offering a brief introduction describing the world in which such characters find themselves, the author studies in greater detail the key figures of Pallas, Nisus and Euryalus, and Iulus--in whom the future of Rome lies. Readers learn the links between these figures and literary characters who come before and after, and the author thus helps the reader perceive the many levels on which Vergilian and Catullan poems resonate. This volume will be an important companion for all readers of Vergil both in English and in Latin, as well as for those interested in literary characterization and literary presentation of marginal figures.Mark Petrini is Assistant Professor of Classics, Columbia University.

Congress and the Rent-Seeking Society

Product : Congress and the Rent-Seeking Society
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : Skillfully blending historical data with microeconomic theory, Glenn Parker argues that the incentives for congressional service have declined over the years, and that with that decline has come a change in the kind of person who seeks to enter Congress. The decline in the attractiveness of Congress is a consequence of congressional careerists and of the growth in the rent-seeking society, a term which describes the efforts of special interests to obtain preferential treatment by using the machinery of government--legislation and regulations.Parker provides a fresh and controversial perspective to the debate surrounding the relative merits of career or amateur politicians. He argues that driving career politicians from office can have pernicious effects on the political system: it places the running of Congress in the hands of amateur politicians, who stand to lose little if they are found engaging in illegal or quasi-legal practices. On the other hand, career legislators risk all they have invested in their long careers in public service if they engage in unsavory practices. As Parker develops this controversial argument, he provides a fresh perspective on the debate surrounding the value of career versus amateur politicians.Little attention has been given to the long-term impact of a rent-seeking society on the evolution of political institutions. Parker examines empirically and finds support for hypotheses that reflect potential symptoms of adverse selection in the composition of Congress: (1) rent-seeking politicians are more inclined than others to manipulate institutional arrangements for financial gain; (2) the rent-seeking milieu of legislators are more likely to engage in rent-seeking activity than earlier generations; (3) and the growth of rent-seeking activity has hastened the departure of career legislators.Glenn R. Parker is Distinguished Research Professor, Florida State University.

Political Complexity: Nonlinear Models of Politics

Product : Political Complexity: Nonlinear Models of Politics
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : This collection illustrates how nonlinear methods can provide new insight into existing political questions. Politics is often characterized by unexpected consequences, sensitivity to small changes, non-equilibrium dynamics, the emergence of patterns, and sudden changes in outcomes. These are all attributes of nonlinear processes. Bringing together a variety of recent nonlinear modeling approaches, Political Complexity explores what happens when political actors operate in a dynamic and complex social environment. The contributions to this collection are organized in terms of three branches within non-linear theory: spatial nonlinearity, temporal nonlinearity, and functional nonlinearity. The chapters advance beyond analogy towards developing rigorous nonlinear models capable of empirical verification.Contributions to this volume cover the areas of landscape theory, computational modeling, time series analysis, cross-sectional analysis, dynamic game theory, duration models, neural networks, and hidden Markov models. They address such questions as: Is international cooperation necessary for effective economic sanctions? Is it possible to predict alliance configurations in the international system? Is a bureaucratic agency harder to remove as time goes on? Is it possible to predict which international crises will result in war and which will avoid conflict? Is decentralization in a federal system always beneficial? The contributors are David Bearce, Scott Bennett, Chris Brooks, Daniel Carpenter, Melvin Hinich, Ken Kollman, Susanne Lohmann, Walter Mebane, John Miller, Robert E. Molyneaux, Scott Page, Philip Schrodt, and Langche Zeng. This book will be of interest to a broad group of political scientists, ranging from those who employ nonlinear methods to those curious to see what it is about. Scholars in other social science disciplines will find the new methodologies insightful for their own substantive work.Diana Richards is Associate Professor of Political Science, University of Minnesota.

Description : Nineteen-year-old Luisa McKenzie has failed her Scottish Highers and finds herself back at primary school - working as a teaching assistant, a role she never envisaged or wanted. Her old friends have all left town and she spends her days perched in the classroom''s Home Corner, answering questions about God and Death and the colour of the sky. Increasingly disillusioned and reflecting on paths not taken, Luisa begins to ask her own questions about life and the so-called adult world. As her end-of-year review looms, it looks like she may not even be able to hold down this unsatisfactory job much longer and, with the discovery of an uncomfortable secret, her take on reality slowly begins to unravel . . . The Home Corner is a funny, tender novel about feeling adrift when facing the ''real world'' for the first time. It explores the way we create our own identities in the light of other people''s, and queries the distinctions that are made between the absent and the present, the real and the imagined.

Renewing Jewish Faith

Category : Books>Religion and Spirituality
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 7
Description : So much hard work goes into the creation of a quality sermon, and upon its completion, it will be forgotten by some, remembered inaccurately by others, and cherished forever by a few. That is why it is such a blessing that Rabbi Irwin Groner, one of America''s leading Conservative rabbis, has collected his sermons in book form so that we can all have access to them.-Rabbi Harold Kushner, author of When Bad Things Happen to Good PeopleThis wonderful collection of Rabbi Groner''s sermons is inspirational and instructional. His teachings on faith, family, freedom, forgiveness, and the future are universal in their appeal and will touch the hearts and souls of people from every faith community. His sermons give us reasons to hope, questions to ponder, and inspiration to make ourselves and our communities better. Through these discourses, Rabbi Groner opens the doors of the synagogue for all to enter and experience a greater understanding of and appreciation for Judaism.-Jennifer Granholm, Governor, State of MichiganRabbi Groner''s sermons speak ''from the heart to the heart.'' They speak directly of the transcendent human yearnings for understanding and connection, for brotherhood and peace. The rabbi''s words demonstrate his remarkable ability to understand our innermost fears and needs. The reader is then inspired to share in the author''s vision: that our response to injustice and cruelty should not be rebellion, but faith in the power of each of us to help repair our battered world. Rabbi Groner''s compassion and wisdom will help us live more courageous and worthy lives.-Carl Levin, Senator, State of MichiganA good sermon is an art, as much in the way it is put together as delivered. Renewing Jewish Faith is Rabbi Irwin Groner at the top of his form, and this moving, insightful, and lucidly written collection offers observations on Judaism and a lively presentation of the values of the Jewish faith. The focus of Rabbi Groner''s sermons is the central importance of the synagogue in the renewal of Jewish life-it is the institution in which Jewish values achieve permanence. He often argues that human nature cannot be understood exclusively in secular terms and that the religious dimension of human existence must be understood as the basis by which life itself acquires meaning. In this spirit, Rabbi Groner''s sermons give voice to both the optimistic and pessimistic opinions about the future of Jewish life in the free world.Groner addresses basic issues confronting Jewish beliefs and tradition in contemporary life. After the first section, Folk, the book goes on to address faith, family, freedom, forgiveness, and future with sermons such as When Life Is Not Fair, On Attaining Maturity, and The Challenge of Freedom.Whether you are familiar with Rabbi Groner''s writings or not, Renewing Jewish Faith is a timeless contribution to the study of human nature and a must-have collection of some of his best sermons.

As the morning dawned, they wound around the curved mountain road, down into a deep canon, and out upon an open plain; stray cattle grazing here and there told of some habitation near. Meetah leaned far out of the stage, glancing back to see if Elmer Stone and his friends were coming; but no one followed them. You think they will come in time, do you? Mr. Balch asked anxiously. Yes, I am sure Elmer will come. He will be in time. I cannot bear to think I might have to wait at the ranch--I could not. If they are not there when we arrive, I shall go on alone, on foot. I cannot wait to see where Lorin is and what has happened. If they are not there, I shall go on with you, Mr. Balch said decidedly. I presume they could accommodate me at the ranch until to-morrow. I would not have you wait, Meetah interposed. I am not afraid to go alone, but Elmer promised to bring the pony for me. I am sure he will come. They were not to leave until midnight; and if they took the road over the mountain, they ought to come out on this plain somewhere near here, as that path joins this road. They will surely come. She relapsed into silence; but as the wheels revolved, her thoughts kept time: The horses are so slow--so slow--so slow. Drive faster, faster, faster! O God! keep him safe from harm! If the driver would let me urge the horses once, just once. If they would go faster, faster, faster! Suddenly behind them arose a cloud of dust; they could see the ranch in the distance,--a low, rambling, one-storied dwelling made of mud and stones. The ranch was now only a quarter of a ...

The idea of your being my daughter, Edith, and addressing me in such a strain!'' ''Between us, mother,'' returned Edith, mournfully, ''the time for mutual reproaches is past. ''Then why do you revive it?'' whimpered her mother. ''You know that you are lacerating me in the cruellest manner. You know how sensitive I am to unkindness. At such a moment, too, when I have so much to think of, and am naturally anxious to appear to the best advantage! I wonder at you, Edith. To make your mother a fright upon your wedding-day!'' Edith bent the same fixed look upon her, as she sobbed and rubbed her eyes; and said in the same low steady voice, which had neither risen nor fallen since she first addressed her, ''I have said that Florence must go home.'' ''Let her go!'' cried the afflicted and affrighted parent, hastily. ''I am sure I am willing she should go. What is the girl to me?'' ''She is so much to me, that rather than communicate, or suffer to be communicated to her, one grain of the evil that is in my breast, mother, I would renounce you, as I would (if you gave me cause) renounce him in the church to-morrow,'' replied Edith. ''Leave her alone. She shall not, while I can interpose, be tampered with and tainted by the lessons I have learned. This is no hard condition on this bitter night.'' Description : Excerpt: ... all nocturnal noises must be immediately reported and steps taken to stop such noise. This probably referred to the camel drivers who had a habit of singing native chants far into the night and consequently disturbed the rest of those who wished to sleep. However, this opportunity could not be missed. The C.O. drafted a message which was at once signalled to Brigade Headquarters as follows: Listening Post reports nocturnal noises vicinity of Division Headquarters. What action is to be taken? The Brigade reply which arrived a few minutes later was very brief and pointed; it ran, Put the cork in the bottle. All thought now centred on the taking of el Arish, some twenty-five miles further east, and well protected by Turkish trenches cleverly revetted with scrub, and dress rehearsals were held in which the whole force took part, and which meant a good deal of heavy marching. Between Mazar and el Arish lay a big belt of country where water could not be obtained even by well digging, so that not only men but camels and horses had to be watered from supplies brought up by rail and stored in great canvas covered tanks. The provision of a sufficient quantity to supply the force for a number of days was thus the condition of a successful advance. On December 16th we moved forward to el Maadan, Kilo 128 on the railway, a march of twelve miles, which owing to the difficult country Colonel Morrison noted as probably the most fatiguing the Battalion has yet undertaken. Here the outpost line was held by the 42nd Division and we were engaged on digging and road making. The latter operation consisted in cutting scrub and flattening out a track at a reasonable gradient. On this long rows of ordinary rabbit wire netting were pegged down four abreast and the result was a road which very greatly increased the pace and extent of infantry marching. The wire prevented a man from sinking into the sand and was comfortable enough to walk on, if one was careful not...

Description : Excerpt: ...and trembling and so turned loose. A favourite mount is seldom so mistreated; and if the boss is present the rider knows he will take a note of it. One can imagine how delightful and refreshing this roll and shake must be, quite as refreshing as a cold bath (would be) to the tired and perspiring rider. Alas! cold or hot baths are not obtainable by the cattleman for possibly months at a time. The face and hands alone can receive attention. The new and modern idea of bodily self-cleansing is here effectually put in force and apparently with good health results. The rivers when in flood are extremely muddy; when not they are very shallow, and the water is usually alkaline and undrinkable, as well as quite useless for bathing purposes. Pg 168 Cow-ponies generally have sound feet and durable hoofs, but in very sandy countries the hoofs will spread out in a most astonishing way and need constant trimming. In droughty countries like Arizona and New Mexico we were frequently reduced to serious straits to find decent drinking-water. On many occasions I have drunk, and drunk with relief and satisfaction, such filthy, slimy, greenish-looking stuff as would disgust a frog and give the Lancet a fit, though that discriminating journal would probably call it soup. Sometimes even water, and I well remember the places, that was absolutely a struggling mass of small red creatures that yet really tasted not at all badly. Anyway it was better than the green slime. Thirst is a sensation that must be satisfied at any cost. Once when travelling in the South Arizona country, we being all strung out in Indian file, over a dozen of us, the lead man came on a most enticing-looking pool of pure water. Of course he at once jumped off, took a hearty draught, spat it out and probably made a face, but saying nothing rode quietly on. The next man did the same, and so it went on till our predecessors had each and all the satisfaction of knowing that he was not the only man fooled....

Description : Excerpt: ...on when there''s nothing else. It''s a musty old tradition, a sort of a remnant of the old days, that present day newsmongers use as a yardstick for comparisons. If a modern domestic complication breaks out, the current gossip outmatches it by the entanglements in the Barrow family. If it''s murder, robbery, or arson, some of the Barrows did worse and got away with it. Just now, some current chapters are being written. Mister Logan, the receiver of the bank of Adot, has foreclosed a mortgage on the real estate and seeks possession. Mister Finch, the grazing master, always lenient and forebearing, is seeking to recover past due payments. This may be the final chapter. Grim facts are taking the place of hearsay. Well, just where is this land of romantic tragedy and domestic infelicity? questioned Davy. How come that the movie people haven''t taken it over to fit their verbiage: thrilling, stupendous, smashing, wondrous, and so forth? Well, if the movie people have as much trouble getting on the property as the sheriff and Mister Finch are having, they wouldn''t get a very clear picture and the story would be limited to their own misfortunes. Up to now, old Hulls Barrow has stood ''em off with a gun. They don''t want to kill him and they can''t get possession. Now this Bar-O ranch is just over the hogback, south of us. There is no road, just a trail over the ridge. The Barrows use the other road. I don''t know how big it is. The surveys in these hills stay in the valleys; the lines run from point to promontory. The units are miles, not rods. Tranquil Meadows, a fine area of grassland, is just south of the Bar-O. Had the Silver Falls project been a success, the government would have done the same with the Meadows tract. A road blasted through the hills would have connected the two tracts. 104 Old Matt Barrow was one of the early settlers. Grandfather''s feud with him had early beginnings. I don''t think it was personal, for they rarely met. Grandaddy was...

Description : Excerpt: ...as two hours after they had stopped to eat their lunch when without warning the swamp explorers met with a surprise that gave them a new thrill. At the time, Lil Artha happened to have passed a little in the lead, though he would soon be dropping back again, especially when there came a chance to make a mistake in direction, for he wanted Elmer to decide such puzzles. The tall scout must have forgotten his warning from Elmer, for he cried out: Hey! everybody look what we''re up against! A bear, Elmer, that''s what it is! CHAPTER IX THE PERILS OF THE WATER LABYRINTH Silence, everybody! hissed Elmer, who knew it would be just like Toby, and perhaps some of the other fellows, to burst into a shout as soon as they could get command of their voices. It was certainly a bear, a small one to be sure, but genuine enough, and not such as can be seen with wandering foreigners, taught to dance, or wield a pole as a soldier would his musket. Just when the scouts glimpsed the hairy denizen of Sassafras Swamp, he was engaged in sitting on his haunches and gathering in the bushes with his sturdy forelegs. To Lil Artha, it looked as though Bruin might be making a lunch from the luscious, big blueberries that grew in such abundance here and there through the swamp. Up to the moment when Lil Artha thus called attention to the presence of the black native, the bear must have been in ignorance of their being so near at hand. When he did notice them, he simply gave a disgusted grunt, and ambled away through the brush. Lil Artha always declared the bear glanced back at them as he ran, and even put out his tongue, just as if he knew it was the close season, and that a kind game law protected him from all harm. Say, let me tell you this old Sassy swamp isn''t such a bad place for a game preserve after all, said Toby; I think some of us could enjoy having a week up here, after the law on bears and all such was up. But it''s too far from home during the school session,...

Havin'' been abroad so long, and among foreigners, and in strange places, I expect Hartley looked like home to ''em. This lasts about a fortnight, when the process is sometimes repeated, so that in the Eastern States there are often two broods each season. The most vulnerable point in the career of this little animal is when it is entering the fruit. If a fine poison spray covers the surface of the fruit, and especially if it covers the calyx end of the apple inside and out, when the young larvae begin to eat they will surely be killed. It is estimated that birds destroy eighty-five per cent. of the cocoons on the bark of trees. 2. Apple Maggot.

By that time they have increased so rapidly that there is often one for every boll in the field. This weevil is proving very hard to destroy. At present there seem but few ways to fight it. One is to grow cotton that will mature too early for the weevils to do it much harm. A second is to kill as many weevils as possible by burning the homes that shelter them in winter. Fig. 178. He, however, still continued his operations, and levied an army for the invasion of Hungary, and a fierce and bloody war of races broke out, marked on both sides by the most fearful atrocities. The Hungarian Diet was opened on July 5th, when the Palatine, Archduke Stephen, in the name of the king, solemnly denounced the conduct of the insurgent Croats. A few days after, Kossuth, in a speech in the Diet, set forth the perilous state of affairs, and concluded by asking for authority to raise an army of 200,000 men, and a large amount of money. These proposals were adopted by acclamation, the enthusiasm in the Diet rendering any debate impossible and superfluous. The Imperial forces having been victorious in Italy, and one pressing danger being thus averted from the empire, the Austrian cabinet began openly to display its hostility to the Hungarian movement. Jellachich repaired to Innsprück, and was openly acknowledged by the court, and the decree of deposition was revoked. Early in September Hungary and Austria stood in an attitude of undisguised hostility. On the 5th of that month Kossuth, though enfeebled by illness, was carried to the hall of the Diet, where he delivered a speech, declaring that so formidable were the dangers that surrounded the nation, that the ministers might soon be forced to call upon the Diet to name a dictator, clothed with unlimited powers, to save the country; but before taking this final step they would recommend a last appeal to the Imperial Government. A large deputation was thereupon despatched to the emperor, to lay before him the demands of the Hungarian nation. No satisfactory answer was returned, and the deputation left the imperial presence in silence. On their return they plucked from their caps the plumes of the united colors of Austria and Hungary, and replaced them with red...

You''ve got to get your Mother''s consent for that, you know. And we couldn''t hear of it. Not for a moment! Eh, my love? Of course not! said the Queen. Entirely out of the question! CHAPTER XX That was on the eighth of June. He remembered, because it was a Saturday, Saturdays and Sundays being the landmarks of his existence by which alone he measured the distances and marked the order of events. The habit of so regarding them was contracted in his early days at Woolridge''s, when only in and by those hours snatched from Woolridge''s did he live. All other days of the week were colored and had value according to their nearness to Saturday and Sunday. Monday was black, Tuesday brown, Wednesday a browny gray, Thursday a rather clearer gray (by Thursday you had broken the back of the week), Friday distinctly rosy, and Saturday and Sunday, even when it rained, a golden white. He hadn''t been married a year before all the seven were shady; the colors ran into each other till even Sundays became a kind of grayish drab. And still he continued to date things by Saturdays and Sundays; as he did now in his mind, exultantly, thus: Saturday, the eighth: Jujubes knocked out in the first round. Not that the dates went for very much with Ranny, to whom interesting things so seldom happened. He remembered this one more because of his scoring off Jujubes than because of the scene with Violet...

Description : Excerpt: ... But no narrowed heaven must cloud it, no man-made god obstruct its gaze. Free from superstition and prejudice, it must be ready to follow wherever the voice of reason shall lead it. All inspired men have commenced by freeing themselves from inherited forms of Belief in order that with undiverted attention they might listen to the promptings of the divinity within their souls. One of the greatest of them and one the most free from the charge of prejudice, has said that to this end prayer is the means.151-1 He who believes that the ultimate truth is commensurate with reason, finds no stumbling-block in the doctrine that there may be laws through whose action inspiration is the enlightenment of mind as it exists in man, by mind as it underlies the motions which make up matter. The truth thus reached is not the formulae of the Calculus, nor the verbiage of the Dialectic, still less the events of history, but that which gives what validity they have to all of these, and moreover imparts to the will and the conscience their power to govern conduct. 119-1 The silent worship of the Quakers is defended by the writers of that sect, on the ground that prayer is often very imperfectly performed and sometimes materially interrupted by the use of words. So through the calm air soon arose the sound Of one old voice as now a Wanderer spoke. Description : Excerpt: ...hunger-the Fourth of July arrived, and they celebrated the occasion by a sumptuous dinner. There was soup, sardines, cold tongue, dried-apple sauce, baked potatoes, fresh bread, and preserved pears, and the last of the grapes. At table, Elinor faced the empty chair that held the miniature, for the absent lady''s right to that place was always respected. Pats sat at the end facing the door. They dined at noon. A bottle of claret was opened and they drank to the health of Uncle Sam. Toward the end of the dinner, Pats arose, and with one hand on the table to reinforce his treacherous legs, held aloft his glass. Looking over to the dog, who lay by the open door, his head upon his paws, he said: Solomon, here''s to a certain woman; of all women on earth the most unselfish and forgiving, the most perfect in spirit and far and away 119 the most beautiful-the Ministering Angel of the Pines. God bless her! At these words Solomon, as if in recognition of the sentiment, arose from his position near the door, walked to Elinor''s side and, with his habitual solemnity, looked up into her eyes. Solomon, said Pats, you have the soul of a gentleman. In Elinor''s pale face there was a warmer color as she bent over and caressed the dog. After the dinner all three walked out into the pines, Pats leaning on the lady''s arm. The day was warm. But the gentle, southerly breeze came full of life across the Gulf. And the water itself, this day, was the same deep, vivid blue as the water that lies between Naples and Vesuvius. The convalescent and his nurse stopped once or twice to drink in the air-and the scene. Pats filled his lungs with a long, deep breath. I feel very light. Hold me fast, or I may float away. Both his head and his legs seemed flighty and precarious. Those two glasses of claret were proving a little too much-they had set his brain a-dancing. But this he...

Analysis Of Mr. Mill's System Of Logic

Description : Excerpt: ...others are in their own nature permanent. In some cases of the latter class, the original is also the proximate cause (e.g. Exposure to moist air is both the original and the proximate cause of iron rust). But in others of the same class, the permanency of the effect is only the permanency of a series of changes. Thus, e.g. in cases of Motion, the original force is only the remote cause of any link (after the very first) in the series; and the motion immediately preceding it, being itself a compound of the original force and any retarding agent, is its proximate cause. When the original cause is permanent as well as the effect (e.g. Suppose a continuance of the iron''s exposure to moist air), we get a progressive series of effects arising from the cause''s accumulating influence; and the sum of these effects amounts exactly to what a number of successively introduced similar causes would have produced. Such cases fall under the head of Composition of Causes, with this peculiarity, that, as the causes (to regard them as plural) do not come into play all at once, the effect at each instant is the sum of the effects only of the then acting causes, and the result will appear as an ascending series. Each addition in such case takes place according to a fixed law (equal quantities in equal times); and therefore it can be computed deductively. Even when, as is sometimes the case, a cause is at once permanent and progressive (as, e.g. the sun, by its position becoming more vertical, increases the heat in summer) so that the quantities added are unequal, the effect is still progressive, resulting from its cause''s continuance and progressiveness combined. Pg 83 In all cases whatever of progressive effects, the succession not merely between the cause and the effect, but also between the first and latter stages of the effect, is uniform. Hence, from the invariable sequence of two terms (e.g. Spring and Summer) in a series going through any continued and uniform...

They have a faint tanner''s oil like odor, and when chewed impart an acrid astringent impression in the mouth, causing a flow of saliva, and a sensation of heat in the throat and fauces. Nearly all of the species of this genus are said to be medicinal, and possess analogous properties, the most common of which are T. erythrocarpum, T. grandiflorum, T. sessile, T. erectum and T. nivale, which are conquently most frequently collected. The Trillium pendulum seems to be intended as the officinal plant in the A. E. Dispensatory. But whether the root I have examined is the product of this variety or not, I am not prepared to say. We receive a large quantity of the root from the interior of Kentucky, and have not been able to get any information from those that collect or we receive it from, to enable me to form an opinion to which particular member of the family it belongs. From the similarity of the root, I should judge it to be obtained from one and the same plant. The root, as we receive it, is an oblong rhizome, with numerous rootlets attached to it, and of a yellowish brown color. The acridity of the root seems to reside in the rhizome, as the rootlets have little or...

He is the largest songbird found in the kingdom; and likewise one of the first that proclaims the welcome spring, by his shrill harmonious voice, as if he were the harbinger of Nature, to awaken the rest of the feathered tribe to prepare for the approach ing season; and by the sweet modulation of his tuneful accents, endeavours to delight the-hen atid allure her to the office of incubation, even before there are leaves on the trees, and whilst the frosts are in the fields; building their nestthe soonest of any bird; having young ones commonly by the 25th of March, and sometimes by the middle of that month. The cock, when kept in a cage, whistles and sings all the spring and summer time, at least four or five months in the year; is a stout stout hardy bird; and besides his pleafant natural note, may be taught to whistle almost any tune. When wild in the fields, they feed promiscuoufly upon berries and insects: it is a solitary bird, that, for the most part, flies singly. The sexes are not easily known by their colour while young, but the blackest bird generally proves a cock: the bill of an old cock-bird is of a deep yellow; in the hen the tip and upper part is black; the mouth, in both, is yellowwithin: the hen, and young cock-birds are rather brown, or of a dark russet, than black, and their bellies of an ash-colour; but after the cock has changed his chicken feathers, he becomes coal-black. This bird breeds very soon in the year, and has young ones by the end of March, or sooner: they build their nests very artificially: the outside of moss, flender twigs, bents, and fibres of roots, all very strongly cemented and joined together with clay; plaistering the inside also, and lining ...

Excerpt: ... were dried up to their very bottoms; water-mills stood uselessly still--the water being dried up; and the earth gaped with numerous fissures; the corn, too, in a great many places scarcely grew to the height of two feet. Pacification of the French nobles. In the same year, as the summer was drawing to a close, the nobles of France, who had engaged in the disturbance of that kingdom, made some terms of peace, and were received into favour by the king. About this time, too, some bold but rash young nobles in England--we know not by what spirit seduced--conspired together and entered into an execrable alliance to ravage England, like robbers and nightwalkers. Their designs, however, became known; and the chief of the conspiracy, one Peter de Buffer, a door-keeper of the king, was taken prisoner, and by him others were accused. A dreadful machine, commonly called a gibbet, was erected at London to hang them on; and on it two of the chief conspirators were suspended, after having engaged in single combat; and one of them being killed in thestruggle, was hung with his head cleft open; and the other, living, breathed forth his miserable life on the same gibbet, amidst the lamentations of the multitude assembled. A disagreement between the citizens of Orleans and the clergy. In the same year, about Whitsuntide, a lamentable dissension sprung up between the clergy and the citizens at thecity of Orleans, which originated about, and was promotedby, a chattering, brawling woman; and the tumult wa* fanned up and increased to such a pitch, that some scholars, illustrious youths of noble family, were slain in the city by the townsmen. Amongst these were the nephew of the Count de la Marche, the nephew of the count of Champagne, king of Navarre, a relation by blood of the count...

We have put art above everything, and it must remain there in spite of those who wish to replace it by opinions. I put Candide and Rene into my sack. Take away your Voltairian blague and Chateaubrian faith; they have nothing to do with me. The French tradition is so vast, so contradictory, that it lends itself to all tastes. A famous poet once told me that his master was Dorat. Why not? I might have liked Dorat myself if I had known him. How heavy is the burden of this literary tradition, which goes from fimile Deschamps to Verlaine, across Villon, Rabelais, Ronsard, Montaigne, Malherbe, Corneille, Bossuet, Voltaire, Rousseau, Chateaubriand, Hugo, Sainte-Beuve, Flaubert and so many others. It is chaos, a bog in the forest. We can no longer see the sky. Cut them down! Cut them down! They have taken beforehand all my works, all my phrases, all my ideas. Oh, these obligatory ancestors! They bind me. They suffocate me. Far from drawing tighter the bonds of tradition, we should release the brains which it binds. Bend your branches, great tree, Fleete ramos, arbor alta. What we need is less of models and more of the free light of life which you hide from us. Remy de Gourmont-- Authorized translation by Richard Aldington. MR. LINDSAY ON PRIMITIVE SINGING Mr. Yeats asked me recently in Chicago: What are we going to do to restore the primitive singing of poetry? I find what Mr. Yeats means by the primitive singing of poetry, in Prof. Edward Bliss Reed''s new volume on the English lyric. He says in his chapter on the definition of the lyric: With the Greeks ''Song'' was an all-embracing term. It included the crooning of the nurse to the child, . . . the half-sung chant of the mower ...

It was the fixed purpose of Washington to obey w-^, implicitly the orders of congress with a scrupulous 1776 exactness; and he rejected every idea of interfering with the authority of the state of New York. In obedience to their united wishes, he attempted the defence of New York island. The works for its protection, including the fortifications in Brooklyn, were planned by Lee in concert with a New York committee and a committee from congress. Jay thought it proper to lay Long Island waste, burn New York, and retire to the impregnable Highlands; but as it was the maxim of congress not to give up a foot of territory that could possibly be held, Washington promised his utmost exertions under every disadvantage; the appeal, he said, may not terminate so happily as I could wish, yet any advantage the enemy may gain, I trust will cost them dear. To protect New York city he was compelled to hold Kingsbridge, Govern- Chap. or''s island, Paulus-hook, and the heights of BrookAugust. , lyn. For all these posts, divided by water, and 17''G'' some of them fifteen miles apart, he had in the first week of August but ten thousand five hundred and fourteen men fit for duty. Of these, many were often obliged to sleep without cover, exposed to the dews. There was a want of good physicians, medicines, and hospitals; more than three thousand lay sick; their number was increasing ; they were to be seen seeking shelter in every barn or stable or shed, and sometimes nestling in thickets and beside fences. Of the effective men, less than six thousand had had any experience; and none had seen more than one year''s service. Some were wholly without arms; not one regiment of infantry was properly equipped. The regiment of arti...

Not illustrated. Excerpt: ... PREFACE Xo apology is needed for the publication of this booklet. Slowly, it may be, but surely, the public are beginning to see what not a few earnest thinkers are strongly convinced of, viz., that in Henry George we have a Columbus in social science and political ./ economy. Deeply inspired with this belief, I have performed this small labour of love, in the hope that a sketch of the life and work of Mr. George will help the students of the great economist''s writings to a better knowledge of and greater faith in the man, and lead many who have not studied his writings at all to do so, from the admiration they may be induced to feel for the remarkable personality of their author. As to the literary part of my task I ask the reader to accept this sketch for what it professes to be--a sketch, and a sketch only. The last seven of the ten chapters of which the booklet is composed are written from my own observation, inquiry, and reflection; my task in the first three has been that of compiler and editor, rather than of author. HENRY ROSE. 8. North Grove, Prinress Arrnve, Hull, Juty, 1884. Out upon Nature, in upon himself, back through the mists that shroud the past, forward into the darkness that overhang''s the future, turns the restless desire that arises in man when the animal wants slumber, in satisfaction. Beneath things he seeks the law; he would know how the globe was forged and the stars hung, and trace to their sources the springs of life. And. then, as the man developes his nobler nature, there arises the desire higher yet--the paesion of passions, the hope of hopes--the desire that he, even he, may somehow aid in making life better and brighter, in destroying want and sin, sorrow and shame. He masters and curbs the anima...

Not illustrated. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER IV. ENLISTMENT IN THE WAR AGAINST SLAVERY. 1832-1837. Up to 1832, when he returned from Hartford to his home in Haverhill, Mr. Whittier''s highest ambition, as we have seen, had been to make his mark in politics. To be sure, he had written, in about three years, more than a hundred poems, counting only those that were published. He must have taken some pride in seeing his verses widely copied, and in the reputation as a rising poet that was accorded him by some of the best writers of his time. But poetry was praised and not paid for in those days, and literature offered no alluring prizes to American youth. The academies and colleges were turning out a mob of amateur rhymesters. Theological students were intent upon giving a new twist to the Psalms of David. Young doctors and lawyers were translating the Odes of Horace while waiting for patients and clients. Even Daniel Webster, in his ponderous way, dallied with the Muses, and John Quincy Adams, the busiest man of his day, spent hours in fashioning rhymed lines for albums. Scarcely a professional man of that generation was so utterly prosaic as to escape the infection. The field was certainly not an encouraging one for a poet who should depend upon his verses for a living. Mr. Whittier had tried his wings in the gusty air of politics and found they would bear him, and it was in this direction that he was looking for his life work. While managing his farm, he kept up his contributions to political papers, and took an active part in the politics of his native town, and of Essex County. Caleb Cushing, of Newburyport, had just returned from Europe, and was beginning to feel the stirrings of political ambition. Young Whittier helped him to secure a seat in Congress, and Cushing, who was seven years his senior...

When Kublai-Khan found Buddhism so extensively diffused among the population of his vast empire, he deemed it expedient to adopt it himself, and to grant an especial protection to the Lamas. His zeal, however, for the religion of Buddha did not prevent him from respecting and spreading the faith of Christians, Mahometans, and Jews. On the days of Christian festivals, he had them brought into his presence, and devoutly kissed the book of the Gospels, after having perfumed it with incense. He said that there were four great prophets revered by all nations, Jesus Christ, Mahomet, Moses, and Chakia-Mouni; and that he held them all in equal honour, and equally invoked their celestial assistance. NICOLO AND MATTEO POLO. S33 This amalgamation of all beliefs was an arrangement perfectly agreeable to the customs of Tchinguiz-Khan, and to the habits of the greater part of the Chinese emperors. Description : This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1868 edition. Excerpt: ... VI. ON THE MORPHOLOGICAL CONSTITUTION OF THE SKELETON OF THE VERTEBRATE HEAD. In an abstract which professes to give only the general results of my own investigations, I cannot enter into such critico-historical details as would be necessary were the corresponding or opposite results obtained by other inquirers to be in every instance brought forward. I am therefore obliged at present to state, in a somewhat dogmatic form, the results which I conceive I have obtained, and the views I have been induced to take of a subject in itself extensive and difficult, and one to which so many distinguished anatomists have devoted themselves. Nature of the Subject.--The framework of the vertebrate head is a syssclerotome--that is, a group of sclerotomes variously modified, and more or less connected, so as to form a distinct whole. The points to be determined are the number and modifications of the sclerotomes in the various forms of vertebrate head. There are, however, some preliminary questions which must be briefly examined. The Source and Mode of Origin of the Sclerome in the Vertebrate Embryo.--The knowledge we at present possess of the source and mode of origin of the vertebrate sclerome is the result of the successive researches more particularly of Pander, Von Baer, Rathke, Reichert, and Remak, on the development of the blastoderma. Von Baer, while he adopted the doctrine of Pander regarding the so-called serous and mucous layers, took a somewhat modified view of the vascular layer, and directed attention more particularly to the dorsal and ventral folds of the blastoderma, in connection with the corda dorsalis, as fundamental embryological characteristics of the vertebrate type of organisation. Among the numerous results of...
