Geographic Differences In The Relative Price Of Healthy Foods

Product : Geographic Differences In The Relative Price Of Healthy Foods
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 8
Description : Although healthy foods can be affordable, if less healthy foods are cheaper, individuals may have an economic incentive to consume a less healthful diet. Using the Quarterly Food-at-Home Price Database, we explore whether a select set of healthy foods (whole grains, dark green vegetables, orange vegetables, whole fruit, skim and 1% milk, fruit juice, and bottled water) are more expensive than less healthy alternatives. We find that not all healthy foods are more expensive than less healthy alternatives; skim and 1% milk are less expensive than whole and 2% milk and bottled water is generally less expensive than carbonated nonalcoholic drinks. We also find considerable geographic variation in the relative price of healthy foods. This price variation may contribute to geographic variation in diet and health outcomes.

The News Content Of Macroeconomic Announcements: What If Central Bank Communication Becomes Stale?

Product : The News Content Of Macroeconomic Announcements: What If Central Bank Communication Becomes Stale?
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 8
Description : How do financial markets incorporate news? This paper argues that one piece of news not only has direct effects on asset prices and market volatility, but it can also alter the relative importance of other news. Studying the reaction of UK short-term interest rates to the Bank of England''s Inflation Report and to macroeconomic announcements, this paper finds support for the notion of interdependent news effects. With time elapsing since the latest release of an Inflation Report, market volatility increases, suggesting that market uncertainty rises until the central bank updates its communication. At the same time, the price response to other macroeconomic announcements becomes more pronounced, and they play a more important role in reducing uncertainty.

The Rise And Fall Of U.s. Inflation Persistence

Product : The Rise And Fall Of U.s. Inflation Persistence
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 8
Description : We estimate the path of inflation persistence in the United States over the last fifty years using an ARMA model of inflation with time-varying autoregressive parameter, motivated by the familiar New Keynesian framework. The estimated path of inflation persistence is consistent with a general reading of Federal Reserve history; inflation persistence is estimated to have declined substantially during Volcker and Greenspan''s tenures from the high persistence of the 1970s. Interpreted in light of the theoretical framework, the results suggest that the Federal Reserve has placed increasing weight on inflation stability in recent decades.

State-of-the-art Reactor Consequence Analyses (soarca) Report: Draft Report For Comment: Nureg-1935

Product : State-of-the-art Reactor Consequence Analyses (soarca) Report: Draft Report For Comment: Nureg-1935
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 8
Description : Accident phenomena and offsite consequences of severe reactor accidents have been the subjects of considerable research over the last several decades by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). As a consequence of this research focus, analyses of severe accidents at nuclear power reactors are more detailed, integrated, and realistic than at any time in the past. A desire to leverage this capability to address conservative aspects of previous reactor accident analyses was a major motivating factor in the genesis of the State-of-the-Art Reactor Consequence Analyses (SOARCA) project. By applying modern analysis tools and techniques, the SOARCA project developed a body of knowledge regarding the realistic outcomes of severe nuclear reactor accidents. To accomplish this objective, the SOARCA project''s integrated modeling of accident progression and offsite consequences used both state-of-the-art computational analysis tools and best modeling practices drawn from the collective wisdom of the severe accident analysis community. This study has focused on providing a realistic evaluation of accident progression, source term, and offsite consequences for select scenarios for the Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station and Surry Power Station. By using the most current emergency preparedness practices and plant capabilities, as well as the best available modeling, these analyses are more realistic than past analyses. These analyses also consider mitigative measures (e.g., emergency operating procedures, severe accident management guidelines, and Title 10 to the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) 50. 54(hh) measures), contributing to a more realistic evaluation.

Confirmatory Thermal-hydraulic Analysis To Support Specific Success Criteria In The Standardized Plant Analysis Risk Models-surry

Product : Confirmatory Thermal-hydraulic Analysis To Support Specific Success Criteria In The Standardized Plant Analysis Risk Models-surry
Category : Books>Social and Cultural Studies
Catalog : Indigo Product Feed - Books Catalog 8
Description : In a limited number of cases, thermal-hydraulic success criteria from the suite of standardized plant analysis risk (SPAR) models have apparent inconsistencies when compared to counterpart licensee probabilistic risk assessments (PRAs), other relevant SPAR models (i.e., models for similar plants), or relevant engineering studies. These inconsistencies are a natural outcome of the SPAR development process, and often reflect the apparent inconsistencies seen across licensee PRAs for similar plants. Even so, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff wants to strengthen the technical basis for the SPAR models by performing targeted additional engineering analysis. The identified success criteria are for both pressurized-water reactors (PWRs) and boiling-water reactors (BWRs). This report describes MELCOR analyses performed to augment the technical basis for supporting or modifying these success criteria. The success criteria contained herein are intended to be confirmatory in nature, and while suitable for their intended use in supporting the SPAR models they are not intended to be used by licensees for risk-informed licensing submittals. This report first provides a basis for using a core damage surrogate of 2,200 degrees Fahrenheit (1,204 degrees Celsius) peak cladding temperature. Following this discussion are descriptions of the major plant characteristics for the two plants used for this analysis (Surry Power Station and Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station) and the MELCOR models used to represent these plants. Finally, the report presents the results of many MELCOR calculations and compares these results to the corresponding sequences and success criteria in the SPAR models for Surry and Peach Bottom. The results provide additional timing information for many sequences, confirm many of the existing SPAR model modeling assumptions, and support a few specific changes. Specific changes that have been made to the SPAR models as a result of these analyses are:
