Fibras Multimodo de Salto de Índice

Estas fibras son aquellas en las que el índice de refracción del núcleo permanece invariable en toda su sección. Este tipo de fibra son las que menos se utilizan en Ingeniería de Telecomunicación, reservándolas para aplicaciones de corta distancia y bajo ancho de banda. El índice de refracción del revestimiento también es constante. El perfil del índice de refracción toma la forma que se ve en la figura.

Este tipo de fibra permita la coexistencia de varios modos de propagación, llegando cada uno de ellos en instantes diferentes al extremo del receptor de la fibra óptica, por lo anteriormente explicado.

Al ser la señal resultante la suma de los diversos modos de propagación que llegan en cada instante al receptor, y dado que llegan desfasados en el tiempo por viajar por caminos diferentes, se produce un ensanchamiento del impulso original. Esto dice a las claras, que la dispersión modal es acumulativa con la distancia. Esto origina una reducción del ancho de banda, ya que éste es inversamente proporcional al ancho del pulso de recepción. Como consecuencia, las fibras ópticas multimodo incrementarán su ancho de banda en la medida que transmitan menor cantidad de modos, a través de su núcleo.

Al ser constante el índice de refracción, también lo será la apertura numérica:

Como ventaja las fibras ópticas multimodo S.I. permiten transmitir por ellas una mayor cantidad de energía comparado con las otras fibras, esto es consecuencia de la transmisión de más modos. Desde el punto de vista de las comunicaciones, este punto no es muy interesante, si lo es para aplicaciones de electromedicina, por ejemplo.

Fibras Multimodo de Índice Gradual ( I.G.)

En este tipo de fibras, el índice de refracción del núcleo es variable a lo largo del radio del mismo, siendo máximo en el centro y disminuyendo hacia la periferia. El índice de refracción del revestimiento permanece constante.

Estas fibras presentan características de transmisión mucho más interesantes. Así pues, la velocidad de propagación en un medio donde el índice de refracción en n es igual a c/n , siendo c la velocidad de la luz en el vacío. De esta forma, se es mayor el índice de refracción en el centro del núcleo, la velocidad de las ondas que se transmiten por el es menor que la de aquellas que viajan por la periferia, con lo que el menor espacio a recorrer por las primeras se compensa con su menor velocidad, permitiendo así que las ondas emitidas en una cara y en un instante determinado, lleguen casi al mismo tiempo al extremo distante. Por lo tanto, el retardo entre modos será menor y, en consecuencia, también será menor el ensanchamiento del pulso original en el receptor. Esto lleva a la posibilidad de un aumento de ancho de banda.

En las fibras con este tipo de perfil de índice las trayectorias de los modos son curvas, en lugar de rectas, como ocurre con las fibras de salto de índice, debido precisamente a la variación del índice. Esta variación ocurre, además, de tal forma que se van produciendo enfoques sucesivos de los rayos en dirección al eje de la fibra.

Las trayectorias de los modos meridionales son del tipo sinusoidal, variando su amplitud según el ángulo de incidencia. Las trayectorias de los modos no meridionales son de tipo helicoidal y dependen de la distancia al eje óptico de la fibra, el ángulo y el punto de incidencia.

Las curvas de la figura representan la ley de va riación del índice de refracción, de modo que los puntos A, B, C, ... tendrán el mismo índice entre sí, así como los puntos A’, B’, C’, ... Por lo tanto, ABC constituye un interfaz de índice constante n1 , A’B’C’ otro índice n2 y así sucesivamente. A índices menores corresponden ángulos α2, α3 sucesivamente mayores, con lo que el rayo que incidió con un ángulo α1 se va curvando paulatinamente hacia el eje.

El retardo y el mantenimiento del ancho del pulso dependen de los factores espaciales que conforman al núcleo de la fibra; es decir, de la ley de variación del índice de refracción y del radio del núcleo. La variación del índice en función del radio está dada por:

g es un parámetro dependiente de las características constitutivas de la fibra

Valores de g

Dependiendo del valor que tome g (siempre >1), se obtendrán diferentes valores de la ecuación anterior. El retardo entre modos se puede minimizar optimizando este valor.

El valor de este parámetro dependerá de la longitud de onda de trabajo y de la composición del núcleo. Una expresión aproximada de su valor es:

Encontrándose habitualmente cercano a 2, por lo que resulta prácticamente un perfil parabólico.

Determinación del Parámetro A

Para su cálculo impondremos la condición de contorno

Los valores típicos de d son del orden de 0.01 para fibra multimodo.

Apertura Numérica de las Fibras I.G.

Partiendo de la formula general:

A partir de esta ecuación, deducimos que la apertura numérica de una fibra con índice gradual es variable con r y siempre menor que la de salto índice de iguales materiales de núcleo y revestimiento, situándose cerca de 0.1. En conclusión, transmitirá menos energía que la fibra de S.I. Llegamos a esto observando que cada modo en propagación aporta una cantidad de energía determinada, y que el número de modos guiados por una fibra multimodo es:

Fibras Monomodo

Según se vio, la única opción posible para conseguir la transmisión de un único modo en la fibra es reducir su diámetro. Llevándolo a valores inferiores a 6 o 10 μm, se consigue la condición de V < 2.405, y estaremos ante una fibra monomodo. Los valores típicos de δ y AN, son respectivamente 0.001 y 0.1.

En este tipo de fibras, la solución de la ecuación de onda conduce a un único resultado, llamado modo dominante , y que constituye su única posibilidad de propagación.

Por lo tanto, en este tipo de fibras no se da el fenómeno de la dispersión modal (ensanchamiento del pulso), que es producido por la existencia de varios modos. Como consecuencia se ven características de ancho de banda notablemente superiores a las fibras multimodo, es por ello que son ampliamente utilizadas en comunicaciones; son aplicables para enlaces de largas distancias y gran flujo de datos, y hasta enlaces submarinos.

Aunque en principio se fabricaron sólo de salto de índice, actualmente se hacen también con otros perfiles, para mejorar las características de dispersión en un margen más amplio de longitudes de onda.

Parámetros Geométricos

Cualquiera sea el tipo de fibra a caracterizar, los parámetros geométricos propios de cualquiera de ellas son los siguientes:

· Diámetro del Núcleo
· Diámetro del Revestimiento

Estos diámetros, dependiendo de la tecnología de fabricación, arrastran errores. La magnitud de las tolerancias correspondientes se encuentran en las recomendaciones G.651 (fibras multimodo) y G.652, G.653 y G.655 (fibras monomodo), de la UIT. Además el propio proceso de fabricación introduce defectos en la concentricidad y circularidad del núcleo y revestimiento, lo que obliga a definir algunos parámetros adicionales:

Siendo dNmax y dNmin los diámetros máximo y mínimo del núcleo, dRmax y dRmin los diámetros máximo y mínimo del revestimiento, N y R los centros geométricos del núcleo y revestimiento, se definen:

Diámetro del Revestimiento: Promedio de los valores máximo y mínimo del diámetro del núcleo.

En la siguiente tabla se muestran las tolerancias admitidas por las recomendaciones, advirtiendo que en el caso de las fibras monomodo, la recomendación se refiere a diámetro de campo modal, en vez de diámetro de la fibra.

Parámetros de Transmisión

La Atenuación en la Fibra Óptica

Existen dos fenómenos que contribuyen a degradar la información, de modo que en la recepción las características de la señal no sean idénticas a las transmitidas en el origen.

Se trata de las pérdidas por atenuación en el interior de la fibra y la dispersión en el material, si bien en el caso de ésta no se atiende especialmente a las pérdidas.

Se define la pérdida o atenuación en el interior de una fibra como la relación entre las potencias luminosas de salida y entrada expresada en dB (decibel) y calculada a una determinada longitud de onda.

El coeficiente de atenuación  α(λ) se define como la atenuación por unidad de longitud, generalmente en km, a esa longitud de onda:

Son varios los factores que contribuyen a las pérdidas en la fibras ópticas, siendo algunos de estos intrínsecos, como la composición del vidrio, y otros externos causados por impurezas, defectos de cableado, geometría de la fibra. La atenuación adicional que proporcionan estos últimos es muy variable y pueden minimizarse con el estudio de las técnicas de fabricación; mientras que los primeros vienen obligados por fenómenos físicos que ocurren en el interior de la fibra. En cualquier caso, hay que resaltar como características:

a) La atenuación de la señal en un medio convencional, como el cobre, depende del rango de frecuencias de la señal portadora de la información a transmitir, de modo que aumenta con esta en forma proporcional. Sin embargo, la atenuación en una fibra óptica no depende del ancho de banda de modulación, debido a que la frecuencia portadora es muchas veces superior a la de modulación, cuestión que no ocurre en guías de ondas convencionales.

b) La potencia total transmitida se distribuye entre los diversos modos que se propagan. Cuando la propagación es monomodal, la potencia transmitida se distribuye también aleatoriamente entre las diferentes líneas espectrales del modo transmitido.
