Dispersión Modal en Fibras de Salto Índice

En estas fibras, el retardo máximo se produce entre el rayo que accede en la dirección del eje de la fibra y el que entra con un ángulo igual al límite. La diferencia entre los tiempos invertidos en recorrer la unidad de longitud por ambos rayos se deduce del valor lm:

cuando c está dado en km/ns. Un valor típico de la dispersión modal en este tipo de fibras es 20 a 50 ns/km. El ancho de banda debido exclusivamente a la dispersión modal, o ancho de banda intermodal, y que define la frecuencia de corte, es

La dispersión resultante de una longitud l, procedente de la unión de varias secciones, es:

donde g, es el factor de concatenación o acoplamiento , expresa el acople entre modos. Al aumentar este acople o transferencia de energía de unos modos a otros, se provoca cierta ecualización de sus características, lo que disminuye la dispersión.

Dispersión Modal en Fibras de Índice Gradual

Para deducir el retardo relativo de los modos en estas fibras debemos acudir a las ecuaciones de Maxwell. Aquí es donde adquiere todo su significado la elección de un perfil de índice a partir del parámetro g, para hacer mínima la diferencia de tiempos invertidos en su recorrido por diferentes modos.

El valor de la dispersión para goptimo es:

Como el valor de g optimo presenta una acusada dependencia de la longitud de onda, σmIG dependerá de la misma. En resumen, las fibras de índice gradual presentan una dispersión modal mucho menor que las de salto índice, una 50 a 100 veces, como podemos ver

la dispersión modal en una fibra de longitud l es, lo mismo que en el caso anterior:

y los valores del coeficiente g están entre 0.7 y 0.8.

Como se ve hay dos formas de reducir la dispersión modal: reducir el valor de d, muy difícil de conseguir, puesto que depende de los índices de refracción de los medios, o bien reducir el diámetro del núcleo para que la frecuencia normalizada se acerque al valor umbral de 2.405 y se transmitan menos modos. Esta solución implicará una disminución de la energía transportada. Entre los valores típicos de estos parámetros para fibras multimodo, encontramos:

Dispersión del Material

Al analizar cada modo de propagación , observamos que, al no ser nulo el ancho espectral de la fuente óptica, cada modo propaga todas las líneas espectrales correspondientes a las longitudes de onda del emisor. Como a cada longitud de onda le corresponde una velocidad de propagación diferente, tendremos dentro de cada modo una velocidad distinta para cada longitud de onda transmitida, lo que origina una nueva dispersión que, por ser causada por el ancho del espectro, se denomina espectral o del material y también intramodal, por referirse a lo que ocurre dentro de cada modo. Por tanto afecta a fibra monomodo y multimodo.

Si la fuente emite con una longitud de onda λ y un ancho igual a Δλ, la máxima dispersión en cada modo se producirá entre las componentes del espectro correspondientes
a λ–(Δλ/2) y λ+(Δλ/2). Se demuestra que el ensanchamiento Γ del impulso depende de la longitud l considerada y del ancho espectral del emisor y vale:

Este coeficiente resulta ser la derivada del retardo de grupo T respecto de la longitud de onda. La dispersión espectral, es entonces:

Como siempre, la dispersión aumenta con la longitud de la fibra. Se puede minimizar, por otra parte, acudiendo a fuentes de espectro estrecho. Por sobre todo hay que destacar que el coeficiente M(λ) se anula para longitudes de onda próximas a 1300 nm en núcleo de SiO2 y, en consecuencia, también la dispersión. En valor representativo de M(λ) para la primera ventana es de 80 a 100 ps/km.nm, admitiendose hasta 120. en las proximidades de la tercer ventana la dispersión es del orden de la 4 o 5 ps/km.nm.

Dispersión de Guía de Ondas

La dispersión debida a parámetros ópticos y geométricos de la fibra sólo tiene relevancia en las fibras monomodo, ya que en las multimodo la dispersión es pequeña para los modos alejados de la frecuencia de corte porque en ellas el radio es mucho mayor que l, y los modos próximos al corte transportan una fracción pequeña de energía total y se pueden despreciar.

Al referirla a fibras monomodo tendrá carácter intramodal, pero lo mismo que la dispersión espectral era provocada por las diferentes velocidades de las componentes de cada modo, ahora la dispersión nace del hecho de que correspondiendo a cada longitud de onda un índice de refracción diferentes, el ángulo que forma la trayectoria asociada a ellas será distinto, y también los caminos recorridos por esas componentes espectrales.

La dispersión correspondiente a este efecto viene dada por:

medido en ns/km.nm.

El signo (-) pretende indicar que esta dispersión actúa en sentido contrario a la espectral; es decir, que la dispersión temporal total asociada a cada modo será algebraicamente σego. Este coeficiente es del orden de los 0.5 ps/km.nm.

Optimización de las Características de Transmisión

Hemos visto que, por una parte, las atenuaciones mínimas produces, salvo picos provocados por los iones OH-, en longitudes de onda que van de 1200 a 1600 nm. Por otro lado, para longitudes de onda próximas a 1300 nm, la dispersión cromática es mínima y siendo la de efecto guía de ondas de signo contrario, puede resultar fácil cancelar la suma de ambas, con lo que la dispersión total sería mínima.

Esto sugiere la posibilidad de optimizar la transmisión uniendo en una misma longitud de onda de mínima atenuación y la mínima dispersión temporal. Ello se intenta , con nuevos diseños de fibra, de dos modos posibles:

a) Desplazando el punto de mínima dispersión hacia el de mínima atenuación (técnica de dispersión desplazada) y cuyos puntos de trabajo se sitúan ya en la tercera ventana (1550 nm). Ello se consigue a base de alterar el perfil de índice del núcleo (perfiles α, W o de doble entalladura) y las condiciones de dopado del mismo, si bien esto aumenta la atenuación sobre el valor mínimo planteado en principio, por lo que ha de buscarse una solución de compromiso. Los mejores resultados se consiguen con perfiles segmentados, ya que con ellos aparecen, no ya uno, sino dos puntos de dispersión nula

b) Diseñando la fibra de modo que su curva de dispersión sea lo más plana posible y casi nula en la región de mínima atenuación, técnica de dispersión aplanada.

Las Fibras Ópticas

Según sus parámetros sean ópticos, geométricos o dinámicos, las fibras ópticas se pueden clasificar como sigue:

· Por la aplicación a la que se destinen, precisando el uso de fibras de alta y media calidad.

· Por el perfil del índice de refracción: constante o variable. Entre estos últimos están los de índice gradual, perfil α, doble entalladura, segmentado, etc., atendiendo en cada caso a las características de transmisión que deseen mejorar.

· Por el número de modos transmitido: multimodo o monomodo.

· Por los materiales del núcleo y el revestimiento y su composición

A la hora de elegir una fibra, habrá que atender a varias de estas características.

Dependiendo del tipo de aplicación a que se destine la fibra, y siempre en función de su frecuente uso (las comunicaciones) se pueden considerar dos grupos:

1. Fibras de alta calidad para enlaces de telecomunicación.
2. Fibras para enlaces de corta y media distancia.

Lo más frecuente en estos casos es que la fibra sea de vidrio, o al menos con el núcleo de vidrio. En resumen, para fibras de alta calidad se utiliza el sílice, mientras que para el resto se emplean fibras de núcleo de vidrio policomponentes.

Dentro de cualquiera de los tipos indicados se distinguen las fibras monomodo y multimodo, éstas últimas de índice gradual. Por su mayor ancho de banda, las fibras monomodo se aplican a enlaces de larga distancia y gran flujo de información.

Fundamentos de diseño

Para realizar un diseño de un sistemas de fibra óptica, se deberá considerar varios factores, incluyendo la atenuación del enlace, la velocidad de trasmisión, tipos de fibra, empalmes, conectores, equipamientos, y otros.

Como primera aproximación , nos centraremos en los cálculos para poder hacer la selección de la fibra óptica adecuada para la instalación.

Régimen máximo del sistema.

La dispersión temporal del sistema provoca un ensanchamiento de los impulsos. A medida que se ensanchan, van ocupando el espacio entre dos impulsos consecutivos y llega un momento en que el receptor no puede distinguir un “uno” de un “cero” ( ISI ).

Esto constituye una limitación en el ancho de banda. Esta interferencia entre símbolos implica una degradación de la tasa de error del receptor. Habiendo definido la sensibilidad del receptor, en términos de potencia, como la mínima necesaria para que la tasa de error sea de 10– 9 ( hasta 10-12 ) , es evidente que tal degradación se puede interpretar como una disminución de la potencia recibida, por lo que la potencia necesaria para restaurar la tasa de error será:

Donde:
S = sensibilidad real ( dbm)
So = sensibilidad en ausencia de dispersión temporal (dbm)
ΔS = penalización en potencia por interferencia entre símbolos.

Se tiende, en los proyectos, a obtener una penalización en potencia no superior a 2 db, y para valores inferiores a 5 db es válida la expresión:

Siendo:

C una constante comprendida entre 0,4 y 1,5
R la velocidad binaria en la línea.
B el ancho de banda del sistema.

El valor de la constante C es de 0,4 para fibras multimodo y llega a 1,5 en fibras monomodo cuando se usan en sistemas de gran capacidad.

Adoptando el criterio de 1db de penalización, resulta:

En resumen, para fibras multimodo y sistemas de pequeña capacidad sobre fibras monomodo, es válida la expresión:

que expresa la limitación de la velocidad de transmisión por efecto de la dispersión en la fibra.

Para sistemas monomodo de gran capacidad, el máximo régimen admisible se reduce sobre el valor anterior, resultando:

Sección de Regeneración.

La máxima distancia entre regeneradores de un equipo de línea puede calcularse con dos criterios:

a) La máxima atenuación que permite el conjunto del sistema o pérdidas admisibles en el mismo.

b) Dispersión temporal máxima que el sistema admite para una tasa de error prefijada.

Criterio de perdidas admisibles.

El balance de pérdidas en el sistema se puede establecer del siguiente modo:

Este criterio da la máxima longitud de la sección de regeneración por limitación del ancho de banda que es posible transmitir a causa de la dispersión .

Para un ancho de banda a transmitir , resulta:

Si no se dispone del ancho de banda, la relación a emplear será:

donde Ko es un valor entre 200 a 300 para fibras multimodo, y debe reducirse hasta un límite de 100 a 150 en las monomodo.

Lo mismo que en el caso de la atenuación, podemos establecer un límite en el caso más desfavorable :
